“Maticity” Mati City in Davao Oriental is one of my family’s favourite places in the world. We first went there in 2000, about 10 years before it officially became a city, and in the past 19 years we have seen it grow from an almost isolated town to a serious tourist destination.

Getting to Mati was something of a challenge for us back then.

Before we owned a car we would squeeze into an overloaded passenger van for the threehour trip. The roads were pretty good, save for some pockets of repair work that never seem to get done, and for several years much of the highway had only two lanes (one for each direction).

Overtaking another vehicle was, in local parlance, buwis-buhay (you pay with your life), but the drivers always managed to pull us through.

These days, however, the trip has been made much easier and more pleasant because of the construction of additional lanes in almost the entire stretch. Because of this, the trip has been cut to about two hours, and so going to Mati on a whim is an easy decision to make. That’s what we did this weekend; my wife had a buyer in Mati for one of her paintings, and instead of sending it by courier we decided to just drive there for a short overnight stay.

The central business area of Mati itself has changed little over the years. It has been the typical provincial poblacion with streets lined with various small businesses that offer anything from clothes to grains to fuel tanks to food. The only difference is the number of establishments that have been put up. Some years ago a Jollibee store rose in the downtown area, and just recently a ground breaking ceremony was held for a MacDonald’s.

The best parts of Mati are its beaches. Its unique geography gives visitors two very different kinds of water: one side faces the open Pacific and so it is pummelled by large waves that are ideal for surfing and skim boarding; the other side is a bay that has the most serene waters you will ever see. Both are magnets for tourists who have different ideas of what a weekend in the water should be.

In our first years visiting Mati we gravitated towards Pujada Bay and enjoyed swimming and boating in the clear peaceful water.

A few kilometres off is Waniban, a 4-hectare island surrounded by white sand that is basically untouched by any development.

Because of that it is a perfect spot to enjoy a peaceful day, with no distractions from the modern world.

These past years, however, we have found ourselves staying more and more in Dahican, which has a stretch of white-sand beach that faces the open Pacific. It used to be very difficult to get there because the road was unpaved, and driving to the few resorts that were there could take up to an hour. But a few years ago the city government under then-Mayor Carlo Rabat concreted the entire stretch, and now it takes only minutes to drive from downtown Mati to the now numerous resorts that line the beach.

The road development has made it possible for one of the resorts to open a coffee shop – a real one, with an espresso/cappuccino maker and a beauty queen barista to boot (although she has taken a leave after winning a recent pageant). Balud Coffee House, owned by Charisse Sardinia and Carlos Mangcupang, has been making waves (balud is Bisaya for “wave”) since opening last year because it serves seriously good coffee. Located inside the popular Dahican Surf Resort, Balud is the perfect spot for coffee lovers like my wife and me.

Even with the rapid development, the city government and the community have managed to keep Dahican clean and postcard – er, Instagram-perfect.

It is still so pristine that the beach and surrounding water are home to numerous creatures like dolphins, dugong, whale sharks, and sea turtles. In fact there is a sea turtle sanctuary being cared for by a community of surfers called Amihan Boys, and they frequently release hatchlings into the sea.

The resort owners are also mindful that they need to care for the beach because they don’t want the place to end up like Boracay, which had to be closed down for six months last year because it had become “a cesspool,” according to President Duterte. Before that can even happen, they make sure to follow the directives of the Department of Environment and Natural Resources (DENR). It can be difficult and expensive,

says Jing Rabat, owner of Pacific Breeze where we frequently stay, but in the end it benefits the entire city.

We love Mati so much we’ve coined a word to describe the cool “island” vibe that is made possible by the balance of progress and environment protection the city has succeeded in maintaining:

maticity.

Syphilis Ate Anna: The newspaper talked about something called syphilis. What is it, and what do I need to know?

Syphilis is a type of bacteria that, if someone has it in their body, might be passed to another person through sexual touching.

Syphilis is considered a sexually transmitted infection (STI), and the infection rate for it is unusually high in Manitoba right now. Other STIs you may have heard of are HIV/AIDS, herpes, gonorrhea, chlamydia, among others.

Every STI is different. Some STIs are spread when infected body fluids such as blood, semen, vaginal or anal fluids get passed to another person during vaginal, oral or anal sex. Other STIs, including syphilis, are spread by touching an infected area of skin, or by sharing personal body items such as needles.

There are many kinds of sexually transmitted infections.

Some STIs can be cured with antibiotics or special lotions.

Syphilis is curable with a prescription from a health care practitioner.

Many people who have

syphilis do not know that they have it. Sometimes there are symptoms including sores or rashes, but in many cases there are no symptoms at all. This is why it is important for people who are sexually active to get tested regularly.

Syphilis and general STI testing is free with your Manitoba Health Card, and can be done with regular health care provider, at any community health centre, or at many walk-in clinics. Klinic and Nine Circles Community Health Centre have special STI clinics.

An STI test includes providing a urine (pee) sample, a blood sample, and sometimes a swab of the genital area or a visual inspection. If you have questions about these you can ask the person giving you the test to answer them for you.

Most tests take a few days to get the results. If syphilis or another STI is found, your health care provider will contact you to discuss this. You can tell them how best to contact you.

They take privacy very seriously and will only contact you in the ways you have asked. If an STI is found, they will talk to you about treatment and management

options.

For some STIs, including syphilis, the health care provider will need information from you about your past sexual partners; this is so they can be contacted and advised to go for testing themselves. In these cases, your name will never be used when they contact your past sexual partners.

You can reduce your chances of getting syphilis and other STIs by using safer sex supplies, including condoms, sex dams or gloves. Information on how to use these correctly can be found on our website at www.serc.mb.ca.

The findings of Immigration, Refugee and Citizenship Canada (IRCC) 2018 yearly report on Express Entry, as reported in CIC News, was released on July 2. The results are interesting and, in terms of the local Filipino expatriate community, challenging. The numbers admitted to Canada through Express Entry in 2018 are significant with more skilled worker immigrants and families coming to Canada. What about representation from the Philippines?

The recent report provides a comparison of rates over the past four years. The federal program, which operates by itself or in concert with provincial nominee programs, has several immigration streams for skilled workers. Express Entry is divided into the Federal Skilled Worker Program (FSWP), the Federal Skilled Trades Program (FSTP) and the Canada Experience Class (CEC). In 2015 arrivals were under 10,000, and increased to over 30,000 in 2016, up again to over 60,000 in 2017 and over 90,000 in 2018. The admission numbers are related to the number of submissions the previous year.

It takes many applicants one year from the entry point – with the online Expression of Interest (EOI) profile to invitation to apply, to submission of an application for permanent residence – to

approval and arrival in Canada.

Express Entry manages a pool of potential applicants who started the process with an online EOI profile submission. The selection phase is based upon a rating system, which quantifies age, education, work experience, English or French language proficiency, and other factors, usually restricted to highly skilled occupations (O, A or B).

The highest ranked candidates, measured by a Comparative Rating System (CRS) ranking, are invited to apply (ITA). The yearend report reveals that nearly 290,000 Express Entry profiles were submitted in 2018. The Federal Skilled Worker Class comprised 53 per cent of the application submissions or 47,523 of 89,900 ITAs. The Canadian Express Class (CEC) received the second greatest number of invitations in 2018 with 30,571 while another 904 ITAs went to applicants who applied through the Federal Skilled Trades Class.

Of those who received invitations in 2018, 71 per cent did not claim any type of additional points and only 5 per cent of those who did, had a job offer in Canada.

The partnership with provincial nominations is the strongest determinants in the selection of applicants under the Express Entry system. Nomination is worth 600 CRS points can

Where are the Express Entry applicants from the Philippines? almost guarantee an invitation to apply. A total of 10,902 Express Entry candidates with provincial nomination received ITAs in 2018, up from the 8,733 issued an ITA in 2017. This represented 12 per cent of all ITAs in 2018.

Ontario, Nova Scotia, New Brunswick and British Columbia led all provinces in selections.

Ontario, in particular, saw a year over year increase of 3,082. The province continues to be a choice destination for applicants, who received ITAs. Of the 122,247 applications received in 2018, 78,838 had Ontario as their listed destination. British Columbia was second with 22,153 applications, followed by Alberta (8,868), Saskatchewan (3,708) and Nova Scotia (3,532).

Who’s getting invited? The top 10 occupations in 2018 were: Software Engineers (NOC 2173) with seven per cent; Information Systems Analysts and Consultants six per cent; Computer Programmers and Interactive Media Developers (NOC 2174) with four per cent; Financial Auditors and Accounts (NOC 1111) with three per cent; Administrative Assistants (NOC 1241) with three per cent; Professional Occupations in Advertising, Marketing and Public Relations (NOC 1123) two

per cent; University Professors and Lecturers (NOC 4011) two per cent; Financial Investment Advisors (NOC 1112) two per cent; Professional Occupations in Business Management (NOC 1122) two percent; and Advertising Marketing and Public Relations Manager (NOC 0124) two per cent.

The overall activity is increasing but what about participation rates for citizens of the Philippines? The invitations issued by country of citizenship is revealing. Citizens of India dominated the Express Entry invitations for 2018 with 46 per cent of all ITAs issued (41,675).

Citizens of China placed second in terms of participation with 6,248 ITAs with citizens of Nigeria placing third with 6,025 invitations.

Other countries identified among the top five include Pakistan and the United Kingdom with the Philippines not even listed. Express Entry does not seem to be used by many potential applicants from back home. This does not mean that the MPNP is not a viable option, but it is not the only game in town. Potential applicants must become more aware of the opportunities presented by Express Entry. On the one hand, the Philippines is one of the major

source countries for immigration to Canada and yet it is grossly underrepresented in terms of skilled worker applications. The issue may be one of education or just one of becoming accustomed to applying through the MPNP. If you or your family and friends are considering immigrating to Canada, don’t forget to use the Express Entry.

It is time for many back home to become more daring in terms of application submissions and seriously consider Express Entry. If you have questions, do your online research, check with government sources or community services such as the Immigrant Centre. If you need counselling advice, you can also check with a licensed consultant or immigration lawyer for guidance and representation. The MPNP is good but it is not the only application option for many.

Millennials, debt & retirement

by Tim St Vincent Millennials have a lot on their mind: friends, family, social justice, side hustles and more.

But debt management? Not so much. Maybe they should spend a bit more time thinking on this issue.

Forty per cent of Canadians don’t pay off their credit card bill in full when it arrives simply because they can’t afford to.

Forty-four percent of Canadians say that if their pay was delayed just one week, they would have problems covering their expenses.

Fifty per cent of Canadians have no budget. Considering this, it really isn’t that surprising that a full 50 per cent of us admit to living from cheque to cheque.

Debt can’t be ignored. You can be certain it won’t ignore you. This is especially true if you are a recent graduate. A good education doesn’t guarantee you a good job the way it may have

for a millennial’s parents or grandparents. What it does likely mean, though, is a fair bit of debt.

A good way to summarize our nation’s near love affair with debt is one very sobering statistic; for every after tax dollar we earn, the average Canadian owes $1.78.

Try not to think too much on that, it will keep you awake at night.

According to an Angus Reid poll, even with all of that debt floating around out there, millennials around 25 years of age – those who have recently graduated or who are fairly recent in the workforce – have the best outlook of all ages when it comes to retirement. Thirty-four per cent of them feel that they will have enough money saved to do everything that they want with only eight per cent worried about having enough money to keep up with the bills in retirement. Oh, for the optimism of youth!

We need to plan on managing both debt and retirement at

all ages, phases and stages of life. The millennials have one advantage on their side, time.

Approximately 32 per cent of Canadians have put off putting aside money for retirement because of the need to keep up with debt payments, yet 68 per cent of millennials say that their retirement saving will be sufficient to finance their retirement. With housing prices ever increasing and fewer good employer sponsored pension plans out there, millennials need to tap into that advantage they have and start planning now on how to manage their debt and retirement and not wait until they find a bailiff at their door.

Maybe one of the reasons

millennials are so optimistic about the future is because 67 per cent of their parents admit to helping them out financially.

Ironically enough, only 47 per cent of millennials admit to receiving aid from their parents!

But it doesn’t all have to be doom and gloom. Debt can be good, if used correctly and constructively for things like an education or a home purchase.

Couple good debt decisions with solid budgeting and a realistic payment schedule and debt can be very manageable without the need to tap into your future inheritance by knocking on the door of the bank of mom and dad.

If you are a millennial and reading this, take heart; time is

your friend. Use it well and it will reward you. Forget about it and the benefits it will bring you, and one day many years down the road, it will greet you with a nasty surprise. Plan well and don’t be surprised!

Bullying or managing?

In 2013, the Government of Manitoba legislated an antibullying law designed for schools in order to protect students from harassment. The law not only protects students but also requires teachers to report incidents to the school principal. As a consequence, students who are in violation of the law can be disciplined up to expulsion from their school.

Everyone has the right to a respectful and safe environment, including employees. Workplace bullying is a very serious issue.

It’s no different from bullying and cyber bullying in schools.

Typically, bullying complaints come from employees against their supervisor or manager. As we know, it can be very difficult to differentiate between bullying and reasonable supervisory or managerial obligation. Some employees may feel bullied when they are being performance managed or when they are subject to progressive discipline.

Sometimes, employees describe certain behaviours as “bullying” when they are not. As an example employees may call their boss discriminatory or “racist” because

they are being told to get back to work.

So how can we tell whether a team leader’s behaviour may be bullying or legitimately exercising their right as a leader?

First we need to understand definitions. Bullying is a form of harassment. Under The Workplace Safety and Health Act in Manitoba, harassment is defined “any vexatious behaviour in the form of hostile, inappropriate and unwanted conduct, verbal comments, actions or gestures that affects a worker’s dignity or psychological or physical integrity and that results in a harmful workplace for the worker, or the improper use of the power or authority inherent in a person’s position to endanger a worker’s job, undermine the worker’s job performance, threaten the economic livelihood of the worker or negatively interfere in any other way with the worker’s career.”

Simply put, harassment is any unwelcome repetitious behaviour meant to cause harm or impact on a person.

A case of a social worker came up years ago in Ontario alleging

harassment against a director who repeatedly told her to document discussions with nursing home residents’ family members.

According to the case, the director raised some concerns about the social worker’s performance particularly because they had to require her to work more hours as a result of her inability to keep up with the completion of resident assessments. As a result, she received a written warning from management.

The social worker was eventually dismissed from her employment, which subsequently prompted her to file a complaint pursuant to the Occupational Health and Safety Act. She alleged that her dismissal was retaliation following the harassment complaint. However, the Ontario Labour Relations Board rejected the complaint stating, “The workplace harassment provisions do not normally apply to the conduct of a manager that falls within his or her normal work function, even if in the course of carrying out that function a worker suffers unpleasant consequences.”

The Board found that while some of the comments that the employer made towards the social worker were direct and unfavourable, the repeated reminders were part of the employer’s role in managing their employees who were unsuccessful

in meeting work expectations. The Board’s decision clearly indicates that employers are entitled to manage their workforce.

When we go back to the definition of harassment and bullying, it relates more to red flag behaviours such as aggression, teasing, belittling, unreasonable work expectations, and setting up a person for failure, among many others. Bullying does not include bona fide team leader responsibilities such as giving repeated reminders of work expectations. Just because a manager or a supervisor keeps reminding an employee to get back to work because they have been caught chatting with a peer does not mean that the employee is being harassed or bullied. For lack of a better word, managers and supervisors are paid to remind their employees to be productive, and in turn, workers are paid to do their job instead of chat on the work floor.

While some employees may feel discouraged because their boss is always managing them, there is no law that dictates employers to be “nice.” Managers do the job that they do because they are required to do so. Every manager has a different style of communication. There are those who are passive and there are those who are very expressive.

There are introverts and there

are extroverts. Just because a manager is using a no-nonsense style of management does not mean they are bullies; they simply want to ensure that business goals and needs are met. This does not mean to say that rude behaviour is OK. It is not OK. If the behaviour appears to be unreasonable and not aligned with performance-related matters and business deliverables, that’s when we really need to pay attention.

The role of the sun and moon in feng shui When we think of feng shui, the usual things that come to mind are frogs, wind chimes, and lucky coins. But, the role of the sun and moon has a strong pull in feng shui, just as they do our lives. Those who say that the planets have no role in our lives are mistaken.

The sun regulates even our simplest acts, such as getting up in the morning and sleeping at night.

Electronics are often problematic when the sun is flaring. The moon also pulls on us, regulating women’s cycles by the moon’s increasing and diminishing rhythms, lifting our tides, and helping plants to grow.

In Asia, much of what we know about feng shui is also regulated by the sun and moon, and in particular, the moon. The lunar calendar, the calendar by which Asia follows, is moonbased, making this celestial body at the center of special dates, like the beginning of the New Year.

SUN Golden presence, heavenly recognition: The bright heavenly sunlight is symbolized by the east, where the sun arises. It’s a symbol of power and authority. The sun represents standing in a golden light of recognition. Employing a sun symbol or figure in your personal wealth and success direction will help beam positive news your way and bring you “into the light” of recognition for your efforts and successes. These beautiful symbols also help you attract good fortune to your home and life.

Ultimate male energy: In the feng shui symbology, the sun represents the male or yang energy, while the moon is the female or yin energy. When you see the sun and moon together, this is another way of seeing the tai chi, or yin and yang, circle. Whenever, energy is lacking or you have a feeling of being stuck, the sun is able to bring energy to you by brightening a corner, and lifting the chi of your home or in your life.

Purify with the sun: Whenever, an item is brought into the home or feels stale, setting it in the sun is a wonderful way to

rid the item of any negativity and to remove any lingering energies.

Setting water in sunlight will energize the water and make a beautiful sun-water for reviving plants, cleaning with, or for adding to water fountains or aquariums. If someone in your home has been ill, bring in a symbol of the sun, such as sunray style mirror, to help counteract the illness energy.

Energize with the sun: Whenever there is a lack of sun, a home is lacking beneficial energy.

That’s why it’s wise to energize your house by throwing open the curtains and blinds to allow sun into all parts of the house every day if possible. This helps to lift your home’s energy and purify it. Give your whole house a good dose of sunshine each month to keep your home feeling alive and energized.

Sun lifts spirits and beckons love: Adding a figure of a sun to your home will help to bring love to your life, especially when placed in the southwest sector of romance. Place faceted crystals in your sunniest windows to spray rainbows across your home and lift energy. This is especially helpful if you have been down or had a case of the blues. The bright light and colourful streams of rainbow light will lift your spirits and create a positive outlook.

Bright gold colours and jewellery also help lift your personal energy.

Add something gold-coloured to your home to signify the sun and its beautiful auspicious energy.

Breast cancer thrivers!

by Regina Ramos-Urbano “ChemoSavvy,” a breast cancer dragonboat team based in Winnipeg is racing in the Canadian National Championships this July 18 to 21 in Regina, Saskatchewan.

All team members are breast cancer survivors and will be competing against some of Canada’s very best in the Women’s, Seniors and Breast Cancer divisions.

The team has been training very hard on dry land at Balmoral Hall since the first week of February, and on the water, twice a week since May, to be ready for the 200m, 1000m and 2000m races.

Chemo Savvy is considered a bit of an underdog in these races since they will be competing with teams that do not have to wait so long for their waterways to thaw. Even so, these athletes are an extremely

fit, active and well-trained group.

Chemo Savvy team members are courageous spirits, committed and determined to thrive, each having fought and won their lives against cancers.

Many women, when they are first diagnosed with breast cancer fear their lives are over. Chemo Savvy’s vision is to embody survivorship and hope. They try to stay active, eat healthier and vow to never give up until the race is won.

Abby Parto Boehm, a new addition to the team agrees, “Chemo Savvy is a supportive sisterhood that promotes a healthy, physical lifestyle. They’re all amazing women who I admire and strive to be like.”

Formed in 1997, Chemo Savvy currently has approximately 75 members (70 active paddlers), and

53 alumni. Members come from all areas of Winnipeg and surrounding rural communities including Rosser, St. Pierre, Gimli and Niverville. Over the years the team has raced and won many festivals in Canada and the United States.

The team has also competed in the World Breast Cancer Paddling Commission Regattas in Israel, Australia, New Zealand, and Florence, Italy in 2018.

In addition to the Canadian National Championships, Chemo Savvy will be also be racing this year in Calgary, August 11 to 13, and in Winnipeg September 8 and 9 at the Forks. Come and cheer on the team!

To keep in touch with his constituents and to sustain his call for transparency, Moreno also plans to do a weekly Facebook live stream to give the citizens a recap of his workweek. He had his first FB live stream episode on July 5.

“Finally, a Filipino politician is trying to do the right thing…” seems to be a common sentiment expressed by Filipinos who are impressed by the mayor’s daily activities to clean-up and overhaul the sorry state of the city. The 44year old mayor has been getting favourable coverage since he took office for radically reforming Manila’s overcrowded and dirty streets, clearing illegal stalls, trash piles and other road obstructions that have become a common problem in Manila.

Moreno declared that he wanted order in the streets of Manila to make citizens feel safe.

He vows to fight crime, corruption, illegal gambling, and illegal drugs.

He is also actively working to restore tourism in Manila.

One of his first projects was to clean-up the popular commercial areas: Divisoria, Recto, Juan Luna, Soler, Carriedo and Quiapo – parts of Manila usually littered with garbage and swamped with illegal sidewalk vendors who block the roads, endangering the tourists and local shoppers, and making them easy prey to common criminals and pick-pockets.

He also promised to reopen the once-beloved Manila Zoo, which was temporarily shut down by the Department of Environment and Natural Resources (DENR) because it did not have a facility to process its sewage, which added to

He declared that he plans to transform it into a Manila Botanical and Zoological park by adding more greenery. “Rebranding Manila Zoo – that’s the goal… we will make it more vibrant. We are going to have an environmentfriendly zoo,” he said.

Growing up in poverty, Moreno remembers going to school hungry.

He plans to implement a Nutribun program to feed young grade school students starting in 2020.

Among the many campaign promises he is implementing to tackle the problems of Manila is a planned 10-year infrastructure program that includes tourism, health care, traffic, and jobs.

In a recent meeting with the newly installed US Ambassador to the Philippines Sung Kim, he referred to Moreno as a “total rock star” for the perceived “dynamism and energies” he brings to his position as city mayor.

While many are impressed, he is not without his detractors who are speculating that this outburst of activities may just be “ningas kugon” or a flash in the pan. Will this former actor and now a “rock star” politician, be able to maintain his enthusiasm to serve the public in the years to come? Is he the real deal?

Who is Mayor Isko Moreno?

Isko Moreno is a former Vice Mayor of the City of Manila, the capital city of the Philippines. He was also a three-term councillor of the city’s first congressional district. Before entering the world of politics, he was an actor during the 1990s.

Moreno has been open about coming from a poor family. He is an only child. His father was

a stevedore on Manila’s North Harbor. At the age of 10 he helped his parents by collecting old newspaper and used bottles in the neighbourhood and reselling them at a local junk dealer. He also rummaged through restaurant garbage bins for leftover food (called pagpag), which his mother would recook for dinner.

In spite of coming from a poor background, he had good looks, which caught the attention of a talent scout (Wowie Roxas) who introduced him to show business.

Adopting the screen name Isko Moreno in 1993, he became one of the aspiring young actors featured on Kuya Germs’ That’s Entertainment. This eventually led to acting roles in movies: May Minamahal, Siya’y Nagdadalaga, Exploitation, Mga Babae sa Isla Azul and Misteryosa. He also became a leading man with Claudine Barretto in Muntik na Kitang Minahal in 1994. As a politician in 2005, he continued to appear in several TV drama series: Mga Anghel na Walang Langit, Bakekang, and Ligaw na Bulaklak.

Upon becoming an elected politician, he took a crash course in Local Legislation and Local Finance at the University of the Philippines. He also studied public administration in Pamantasan ng Lungsod ng Maynila (University of the City of Manila) while fulfilling his alderman duties in 2005.

He is married to Diana Lynn Ditan. They have five children, Vincent Patrick, Frances Diane, Joaquín André, Franco Dylan, and Drake Marcus.

Pero ewan kung bakit kapag ang trailer na ng Hello, Love, Goodbye ang ipinalalabas ay humihinto kami sa pagtatrabaho, sinisimulan at tinatapos namin ang patikim na mga eksena nina Alden Richards at Kathryn Bernardo, interesado kami sa kanilang pelikula.

Alam namin ang dahilan kung bakit. Pangalawa na lang ang ikot ng kuwento para sa amin, ang mas una ay ang pagpapahalaga namin kina Alden at Kathryn, dalawa sa mga personalidad na hinahangaan namin ang ugali.

The audience learned of​ Dandansoy​ , ​ an Ilonggo folk song and folk tale, played along with a scroll of animations the backlit through the window of a “crankie” box. The pair operating the crankie – P ​rincess Elli​ and ​Robert John Aco​– had a personal story, rekindling a love for traditional folk music and stories.

During the crankie presentation, there was a multigenerational fashion show featuring well loved designs by​ Clarita Nazario​. Mhei Alcos, the fashion show director and makeup artist prepared the models.​ Many have worn ​ Nazario’s Christine Mazur ALIW Band Filipiniana gowns, kimonas and barongs at community events and special occasions. The models displayed the connection of the family unit while sharing traditional textiles and styles.

Singer-songwriter ​ Levy Abad​performed his classic D ​ ito sa Winnipeg​ , a timeless song about the immigrant experience.​ Manny Araullo​’s performance sparked impromptu audience sing-alongs, accompanied by a violinist who got the crowd riled up with his “Quiapo, Quiapo!” during the song Manila. The Canada Philippine Parliamentary Intern Program

by Jaemari Colado The Canada Philippine Parliamentary Intern Program (CPIP) began just in time to celebrate the first Philippine Heritage Month in June 2019.

The five-week program, which started on May 14, consisted of twelve young Filipino Canadians. Our first week was spent in constituency offices, while the rest was on the Parliament Hill.

This program has opened doors for us to work alongside like-minded individuals, as well as our respective Members of Parliament – MP Kevin Lamoureux for Winnipeg North in my case, whose hard work I got to witness firsthand. We were given various tasks inside our offices while, at the same time, still being able to participate in activities like committee meetings and question period, wherein MPs discussed and debated current societal issues in Canada. My fellow interns and I had the privilege to watch the Prime Minister answering questions from the opposition parties in the House of Commons.

While on Parliament Hill, I was most grateful for being able to know more about the issues in our country that do not make it to the headlines. Everyday was a learning experience; from meeting various Members of Parliament and hearing them discuss their experiences, to meeting young individuals who were equally passionate in creating positive change in the community.

Aside from meeting likeminded youths, I got the chance to meet the endearing Filipino community in Ottawa who welcomed my fellow CPIP interns and me with so much warmth and hospitality. Our weekends were spent with fellow Filipinos in Ottawa, wherein we attended mass, danced tinikling, attended festivities, which the Philippine Independence Community of the Ottawa Valley hosted.

and flag raising on the Parliament Hill, in honour of the first Philippine Heritage month that is recognized all over Canada.

These events and festivities were made even better with all the great food. After all, we Filipinos never fail to come together especially when it includes our unique dishes.

The CPIP would not have been as great an experience without the 11 siblings I gained through the program. I was lucky enough to live with three other members who dragged me out of bed on mornings where I’d rather sleep in due to being out late the previous night, screaming to our hearts’ content, cheering for the Raptors. As for the rest, I could not have asked for a better group whom I could go on an impulse trip to Montreal with, or chasing buses, and going out for Karaoke nights.

But I will mostly remember the small joys of having ates and kuyas who looked out for one another in a city where not even one of us lived.

To be able to work alongside individuals who are as passionate in making a difference as I am, in a place where the policies shaping the lives of Canadians are made, is a privilege that the CPIP has given me and the rest of those in the program. With all the learning that we gained in the country’s capital, we only hope to give back to Canada, and to strengthen the representation of the Filipino people.

Seven Oaks ER closes July 22 The emergency department at Seven Oaks General Hospital will become an Urgent Care Centre on Monday, July 22.

The Winnipeg Regional Health Authority (WRHA) made the announcement on July 9. The change was originally planned for September 2019, but the WRHA confirmed in late June that the conversion would happen this summer.

The closure of the emergency department is the latest part of the Progressive Conservative government’s plan for Manitoba’s health care system, which includes the consolidation of Winnipeg’s six ERs into just three. Seven Oaks is the last of the three to be converted. The ER at Victoria General Hospital became an urgent care centre in the fall of 2017 and the ER at Concordia Hospital followed this past June.

The revamping of the health care system began in 2017 based on initial recommendations from consultant David Peachey.

However, following a review of the transition so far, Peachey suggested the government complete a risk assessment and slow the second phase of the health system overhaul.

Manitoba Nurses Union president Darlene Jackson said in a statement that her members are concerned the accelerated conversion will lead to a sudden rise in emergency patient volumes at the three remaining Winnipeg ERs, which might not have enough staff to meet demand.

“By rushing through these changes and ignoring the advice of nurses, they have created serious human resource challenges,” said Jackson.

“Patient safety could be jeopardized due to a shortage of nurses and other front-line staff.

This is a mess of the government’s creation and is another indication they are having trouble recruiting and retaining nurses.”

Jackson also questioned whether the transition aligns with

the more recent recommendations from Peachey’s review of the province’s health-care changes.

“This is unreal,” said Manitoba NDP Leader Wab Kinew. “We know the Pallister government is not ready to close this emergency room and yet they’re rushing ahead with this plan anyway, simply because they’re short-staffed.” Kinew spoke to the media at a protest outside Seven Oaks Hospital
