Point Douglas Councillor, Mike Pagtakhan, recently announced that after four straight, successful terms in office, he will not be seeking re-election this coming fall.

Taking offense My initial reaction to President Rodrigo Duterte’s first rant against God — or more precisely, against the Christian God — was, “So what?” He was, after all, not an expert on the matter, and he was merely pointing out what are actually common questions and objections to the religion. He ranted against original sin, the concept of hell and purgatory, and a few others. It didn’t bother me because I know a few Catholics and non-Catholics who have the same questions. Even his “stupid God” statement has to be taken in its proper context: he wasn’t calling God stupid, he was saying it would be a stupid God who would seek to destroy his own creation with sin (and its consequence).

But of course the reaction was almost universal derision.

Here I think it is useful to see where Duterte is coming from in his tirades against the Catholic Church (and by extension, all other Christian churches). He himself gave the background in a speech in Davao City on July 7.

“Something terrible happened

when we were young. It’s not really that serious. But fondling while confessing. We were being fondled so when I graduated, hindi na ako Katoliko. Hindi na ako Katoliko (I was no longer a Catholic. I was no longer a Catholic) at that age. I was not even in politics then.”

In interviews before he ran for President, Duterte had identified the priest as a certain Fr. Mark Falvey of the Ateneo de Davao University, who is now deceased.

Falvey, according to a report from ABS-CBN, had also been accused of similar offenses in the US. So that’s the background.

Sexual abuse, even when it isn’t “serious,” is enough to drive someone to the edge. Duterte said when he graduated, he “created” his “own God based on the values I have seen like justice (and) fairness. I have always said in Davao, ‘My God is my service to the people.’”

So that’s where he’s coming from. But of course it’s one thing to criticize a religion, quite another to do it when you are the President of the Republic. I would

like to think that what shook many to their core were the statements’ implications on freedom of religion, including a possible crackdown on churches. But based on the statements of various groups — including the Philippine Council of Evangelical Churches (PCEC) — the main issue was that they were “immensely offended”

by Duterte.

Maybe I’ve been so far removed from traditional church for too long, but when did being offended become a valid response to an attack on our faith? I have always believed that the proper reaction to persecution is to pray for the people doing it and show love to them. Didn’t Jesus himself say in Matthew 5:44, “love your enemies and pray for those who persecute you…”? And didn’t the apostle Paul say in Romans 12:14, “Bless those who persecute you; bless and do not curse”?

I became a Christian in the 80s when it wasn’t particularly popular to be one. We were called many names like “born against,” and we were mocked for our constant use of phrases like “praise the Lord.” But we were never taught by our elders to retaliate or to take offense; it was actually normal for the world to treat believers in such manner.

Instead of being downhearted, we

were taught to take James 1:2-4 to heart: “Consider it all joy, my brethren, when you encounter various trials, knowing that the testing of your faith produces endurance.”

I think over the years the Christian church has become a little too comfortable inside its buildings, singing “praise and worship” songs that make members feel a little pampered.

We no longer know how to react when our faith is challenged; instead of taking the offensive, we take offense.

I’m not justifying Duterte here; he is accountable to God for what he says and does. But we are also accountable for our reaction to him. I wish our church leaders, instead of issuing statements saying how “offended” they were, sought an audience with Duterte to give him the Good News. In the grand scheme of things, the President is also a soul that God is seeking out.

Kids and money Part II

by Tim J. St Vincent Last month we talked about kids and money and this month we will continue that conversation.

We talked about how children learn a lot of their money habits at home – not so much as a result of active instruction from the parents, but rather from passive observation.

I have a friend who learned how to handle money by not doing what his father did. His father had a job that didn’t pay very well, and he didn’t have much of an education on how to handle money. When his dad would get paid he would cash his cheque (this was back in the day when people were paid by actual cheques!) and put all the money in a big green bowl in the kitchen. When a bill would come in he would pay it from the “money bowl.” When the bowl was empty the bills stopped getting paid. Not a great system.

Even at a young age this

caused my friend a lot of stress and tension around money, about how bills get paid, and being able to pay the rent. His family was very stressed about money and it became a topic that was never discussed. That was a hard lesson for him to un-learn, but as he got older he realized the only way to get better at handling his finances was to talk to others about money. He learned to budget by not following his dad’s example.

His father isn’t at fault here; he probably didn’t know any better and was never taught any better.

This brings up an important point. How do you feel about money, what “money message” are you teaching your children, either actively, or by them watching how you handle money? Are you okay with how you feel about money? If you aren’t happy with your relationship with money, and what you may be teaching your children, how can you change it?

Well, let’s answer that question

with a few more.

Have you actually talked to your children about money, how they handle it and how they feel about it? These are all very important topics and conversations for parents to have with their children. By having these conversations with them you will get a better idea of their relationship with money – what you have taught them, and what you have not taught them. This will in turn help you clarify your relationship with money as you see it reflected through the eyes of your children.

One of the most important money lessons to learn is that we all make mistakes with money. I did.

I made a lot of money mistakes.

As a young 20 something I used to use credit to pay credit. I was late making payments or skipped them altogether. Student loans were used to help me go on ski trips during “reading week.” I made all the classic mistakes, but eventually I learned from them.

Don’t be shy about sharing your money mistakes with your kids.

They can learn from them the same as you. The really tough part here is that while you need to share your mistakes with them, to guide them and give them advice, you also need to give them room to make their own money mistakes.

As part of breaking the money taboo, it is important to share your money successes as well as your money mistakes. Let your

kids see the bills. Show them how they are paid. Here comes the scary part – let them see your pay stub. Let them see how much you make, how much is taken off for taxes and other items. Let them see how much is left after deductions and how that amount flows through your budget (you do have a budget, don’t you?), how you create savings and how those savings are used to pay for holidays, cars, education and other items.

Money doesn’t have to be a big scary topic. It should never be a taboo topic. We all live with it, we all need to learn about it.

This has been a fruitful topic, so I will carry it on into one more article. Next month I will talk about how to set up an account for your child and the different types of things you can teach your children about money by their age group. Until then, spend wisely!

What about the children?

Canadians have joined the world in condemning the inhumane treatment of asylum seekers, especially children, by the United States border authorities. There is no justification in separating children, even removing nursing babies from their mother’s arms and transporting them to other locations throughout the United States. The American authorities appear not even to have kept track to match each separated child with their parents.

Attorney General Jeff Sessions misrepresented St. Paul’s Epistle to the Romans to justify this cruel policy and President Trump looked to blame Congress, the Democrats, street gangs and whoever else for the policy of zero tolerance that he himself instituted. The cruel separation policy is owned by Trump but we should reserve judgment until we understand what happens to asylum seekers in Canada – “judge not lest ye be judged.”

example with headings such as, “Canada needs to get out of the immigration detention business” (July 5, 2018), and “Canada aims to avoid detaining immigrant children, but it happens” (June 20, 2018). The writers correctly point out that the Canadian government incarcerates thousands of asylumseekers, migrants and children each year. But unlike the very public coverage of large centers in Texas, the detention system in Canada operates mostly out of the public eye in Canada.

The Canadian Border Service Agency (CBSA) oversees a legal network of immigration holding centres and police cells. The CBSA turn to this alternative as a last resort; in situations where the officers need to complete an examination, have security concerns, and have reasonable grounds to suspect that the individual will not appear for an immigration proceeding.

Canadian border authorities have a responsibility, as do their American counterparts, to ensure that the country is safe.

Arlington Bridge According to Pagtakhan, the next Point Douglas councillor will have to grapple with the thorny issue of the future of the 108 year old Arlington Bridge that is slated for closure in 2020. A $2.5 million study including extensive public consultation concluded that the Arlington Bridge is a necessary lifeline to Winnipeg’s North End with the majority of commuters using the bridge during the homeward rush hour.

Without the Arlington Bridge, main thoroughfares like Notre

refugee adjudication process undertaken by the Harper government back in 2012, the government has expanded the use of immigration detention.

The CBSA has detained, on average, 7,215 individuals per year, from 2012 to 2017, for an average of 19.5 days behind bars. Canada has three “holding centres,” in Toronto, Vancouver and Laval, Quebec, and also uses provincial jails for higherrisk detainees and those detained more than 48 hours. According to the CBSA web site, “the CBSA works closely with its provincial correctional partners to minimize interaction, to the fullest extent possible, between immigration and criminal detainees.”

Parents who the CBSA order into detention decide whether or not their accompanying children should be jailed with them or placed in foster care, which is an agonizing choice for many. In 2015 and 2016, 201 minors were detained or housed with parents or guardians. We have not heard of CBSA authorities pulling babies from the arms of mothers, or not bothering to record matching information so that children and parents can be reunited. We do not practice zero tolerance like the Trump administration, with over 3,000 lost or misplaced children, but our actions have

consequences. A number of reports, both in Canada and the United States, have reported the physical and psychological damage incarceration can cause children.

The Canadian number of asylum seekers is small compared to that in the United States. CBSA statistics show that 439 persons were detained for more than 90 days during the 2016-2017 fiscal year. The majority of asylum seekers in Canada are aware that they must routinely report to CBSA authorities pending a decision on their asylum claim. The threat of arrest and incarceration is present at each visit, causing anxiety and fear.

Why would Canada punish those who have fled from a “fear of persecution for reasons of race, religion, nationality, membership in a particular social group or political opinion”? (See the Immigration Refugee Protection Act s. 96)?

CBC articles decry the system of immigration detention as “unjustly punitive.” The submission of an asylum claim is a fundamental human rights in international, Canadian and U.S. law. President Trump makes no pretence about international law, the rights of children etc. Rather, he has been using zero tolerance as a way to deter asylum-seekers from

entering the United States. How else would you explain a toddler appearing in immigration court in Arizona without a parent present to the horror and embarrassment of the judge himself. The CBC writers warn that we in Canada need a watchdog to review the system at our border crossing to ensure that we do not follow the American example. The critics point out that telephone or Skype calls are not a good alternative to keeping parents and children physically together or in touch.

We must resist the temptation to follow Trump’s immoral actions.

A free, democratic society needs watchdogs, such as a free press, to ensure that governments are held accountable for their actions and consequences. It is not enough to change the subject or wait for the end of a news cycle. One child punished is one child too may.

Despite Pagtakhan’s efforts to champion the re-building of Arlington Bridge in council, other major infrastructure projects, including the Chief Peguis Trail extension have been prioritized.

Pagtakhan fears that “the bridge will never be built,” due to budget deficits and not enough political will around council to invest the $330 million needed to re-build Arlington bridge.

Point Douglas Ward Pagtakhan describes Point Douglas as both a visual and figurative “slice of Winnipeg.”

With its current parameters originating at Waterfront Drive and the Red River, and extending north to the Perimeter and Oak Point Highway, it almost resembles a slice of pizza.

Comprised of neighbourhoods like Centennial, Tyndall Park, Castlebury Meadows, Pagtakhan’s ward has residents from all walks of life. Pagtakhan explains that in Point Douglas, he has represented the city’s most affluent citizens and the poorest

of Winnipeg, including those in the Centennial neighbourhood where he and his family reside.

Compelled to action Pagtakhan first entered politics because he felt compelled to improve the lives and surroundings of those in his neighbourhood. Living in Winnipeg’s inner city, Pagtakhan and his family were confronted with daily realities, like witnessing drug deals in their back lane and stepping on syringes in Lizzie Park playground where his kids frequented. There were boardedup houses and residents setting fires nearby. He spearheaded a neighbourhood watch program that regularly met at his home and they successfully lobbied then-Minister Tim Sale to close the back lane. Other community members encouraged him to run for office. With the tremendous support of his parents, siblings, cousins and friends (the Pagtakhan clan is made up of 11 siblings), Pagtakhan set out door knocking across all of Point Douglas, easily wearing out a new pair of dress shoes and losing 15 pounds in the process.

Pagtakhan eked out a win of 272

votes in 2002 to be Winnipeg’s first Filipino councillor.

Life after politics Pagtakhan reveals he has “no definite future plans” yet, but he counts a possible return to the corporate world at Manitoba Hydro, his former workplace, where he is currently on a political leave of absence. Pagtakhan has a background in supply chain management and prior to entering politics, he worked as a procurement specialist at Manitoba Hydro, supporting staff in bids for contracts.

“Who knows, I might even get into arts and crafts like pottery.

That’s one of my hobbies now, I’ve gotten pretty good – that and competitive arm-wrestling.

I might get into business. No definite plans. But whatever I do next, I plan to continue my community involvement because I love helping people and I love interacting with people.”

Intimacy in retirement Dear Ate Anna: My husband and I both retired last month, and we finally have more time together! It feels like we are starting to know each other again. Do you have any tips on us getting closer?

Signed, A Reader Dear Reader: Congratulations on your retirement! It is very positive that you both want to use this time to get to know each other better.

There are many benefits to aging, and one of these is that your experience of sexual intimacy may improve significantly. The more we use our bodies, the more we know about them. For example, we know what kinds of touching we like, and what kinds of touching we don’t like. If you are with the same partner for a long time, the two of you can really get to know each other and what each other enjoys. Also, the emotional intimacy you build over the years can greatly increase the amount of satisfaction for many couples.

The way we experience sex and sexual intimacy shifts throughout life. As we grow older we may need to adjust to our changing bodies, but this leaves a lot of room to be creative and try new things.

Be patient Be patient with yourself, with your husband, and with your process together. Aging might mean that it may take longer to get sexually aroused than it once did. This is not a bad thing; as long as you are patient, this time spent investing in each other can be very enjoyable! Take the time

to stimulate and enjoy each other in different ways. You may find different ways to be together that feels good for both of you.

Be open Communication can really improve your time together. Take time to talk through what you want, what you are comfortable with and what you are uncomfortable with. Listen to him while he tells you what he is feeling also. The more you talk, the better you will understand each other.

Be playful Growing older may mean that certain positions you used to enjoy might be difficult; this is an opportunity to try new ways of doing things that you might really enjoy! Talk to each other about what you are feeling, and be open to trying new things.

These tips should help you get closer. Also, remember that if you or your husband has had some health challenges, or are on certain medications, this may be contributing to some of your intimacy challenges. If you feel comfortable, talk to your health care provider about this. They may be able to assist you in giving some options of different medications, or different ways of feeling more comfortable through your health problems.

In Duterte’s drug war, children are nothing but collateral damage Since 2016, President Rodrigo Duterte and his administration have been actively and outspokenly advocating for the imprisonment and execution of drug users in the Philippines.

During a rally in 2015, Duterte stated that his campaign against illegal drugs will focus on killing drug personalities: “When I become President, I will order the police to find those people [dealing or using drugs] and kill them.. The funeral parlours will be packed.”

The crusade to get drugs off the streets triggered the rise of vigilantism and police brutality.

Within a year, thousands of Filipinos were killed (FrancePresse). Unfortunately, the lives of the young and the innocent are not immune to violence.

According to a report published by Human Rights Watch, 12,000 people have been killed in President Duterte’s “war on drugs.” Among the casualties were children and young adults, some of them as young as five years old. (“Philippines: Duterte’s ‘Drug War’”) The deaths of 17-year-old Kian delos Santos and 19-year-old Carl Arnaiz raised public outrage after the teenagers died under similar circumstances – in the hands of local policemen.

Kian delos Santos was last seen by witnesses being dragged away from a basketball court by cops wearing civilian clothes. Kian was found the next day lying in fetal position, teo sachets of shabu (crystal meth) and a. 45 calibre gun beside his lifeless corpse. Police said the boy shot them, which led them to retaliate. However, a gunpowder exam proved that Kian did not shoot at the officers.

A witness heard the boy begging for his life moments before

hearing gunshots. Investigators formed the conclusion that the “evidence” found beside Kian’s body was planted. His mother, an Overseas Filipino Worker (OFW) in Riyadh, came home for the first time in three years to see her child in a casket. (Merez) Carl Arnaiz was restrained and shot by police numerous times.

He had been missing for 10 days until the morgue called his family.

The autopsy report showed bruises around the teenager’s eyes, swollen arms from excessive cuffing, and four gunshot wounds to the chest and one on the arm. He was found with a backpack containing three packs of shabu and marijuana leaves inside his pockets. Carl’s family denied that the backpack was his, stating that he only had a sling bag with him before he went missing. An altercation apparently started when a taxi driver asked the police for help after Carl allegedly robbed him. Officers say Carl opened fire at them, causing them to shoot back and kill him. Unlike Kian, the test for gunpowder residue came back positive for Carl. Carl was a valedictorian in high school, a University of the Philippines prospect, and an aspiring businessman. (“Another Kian?”)

Whether or not the two boys were involved with drugs remains unknown. However, this fact alone should not be the basis for ending someone’s life. The police’s primary job is to catch potential suspects and allow them to defend themselves before the presence of a judge. Only then can their sentence be justified.

The police should not use their power to execute individuals who they think should be punished for alleged wrongdoing, especially without proof.

President Duterte has expressed his satisfaction with mass killings, citing that the ever-increasing body count during operations is proof that his campaign against drugs is a success. Auspicious wood element symbols for wealth and life For more wealth, add a fleshy-leaved plant, like the jade plant, to the southeast corner of your home. Flowers, like chrysanthemums and orchids, are also very auspicious here and activate wealth energy. In the east, bamboo, pine trees and fruiting trees represent abundant health, vitality and happy family relationships.

FENG SHUI Q&A Question: I have a tree that is in line with my front door. Ever since we moved into this house we have struggled. But, it’s a rental and we can’t cut it down, and we can’t afford to move.

What can I do instead?

Answer: There are a couple of options. The first is to buy three landscaping spotlights. Put them

in the ground and aim them up at the tree. This energy will help to control some of the tree’s energy.

Sometimes landlords don’t mind if you make improvements, like planting versus cutting down.

Movie review: What sets ‘I Love You, Hater’ apart from other rom-coms by: Fred Hawson For the second film in a row, Julia Barretto and Joshua Garcia star in a film that starts with the words “I Love You”. This new one is a rom-com, too, like To the Stars and Back, and I was curious to see if their performance as a love team here could match that of the first one. I think I had only seen Kris Aquino in her horror films (like Feng Shui, Sukob, and Segunda Mano). I thought it was about time I should see her in something else.

Joko fell in love at first sight with the pretty Zoey, but he had to pretend to be gay in order to stay in contention for the very well-paying job which he badly needed to support his financiallystrapped family. Sasha will make her final choice in three months.

Who will get the job?

The JoshLia love team does it again to successfully stoke romantic thrill and tug at heartstrings. Their chemistry together is no fluke and is a big factor why this film worked. That sentimental sequence of scenes set in Joko’s family residence in Paete that featured the local folk art of making taka (paper mache figurines) were sweet proof of that chemistry, cheesy as they may be for others.

Zoey was so unlikable at the beginning, but my opinion of her steadily changed for the better as the film progressed. This was mainly due to Julia Barretto’s effective delineation of her character’s arc. Joshua Garcia was convincing in pretending to be a fabulous gay guy, yet harbouring a serious crush on his competitor. He can really work those puppy dog eyes of his to make you root for him, even if he was doing something wrong.

Kris Aquino plays the irrepressible Sasha with her own signature panache. It was as if Kris was just playing herself and her present career as an Internet influencer via her magazine

PILIPINO EXPRESS videos. Kris was fun as Sasha, what you see is what you get, and so basically we still see Kris Aquino as we know her. However, Sasha was given a home situation that made Kris flex her skills at drama, and she proves that can still deliver well in that aspect.

From the get-go, I got the vibe of The Devil Wears Prada with the newly-hired assistants competing with each other, both trying to keep at pace with their temperamental and demanding boss. Also, the familiar trope of a straight guy pretending to be gay to get close to the girl has also been used in many films before.

However the dramatic twists in the story about honesty, the charismatic pair of Joshua and Julia, and the magnetic largerthan life presence of Kris Aquino – all set this particular film directed by Giselle Andres apart from other derivative rom-coms.

Fil-Am Rondalla troupe to perform in Winnipeg Iskwelahang Pilipino Rondalla from Boston, Massachusetts, will present their touring show Reveries and Rhythms in Winnipeg this August.

The show is a combination of traditional Philippine folk songs and folk dance music, Philippine contemporary music, original Filipino-American compositions and American contemporary music – all performed on bandurias and octavinas (mandolins), guitars and a double bass, with supplemental percussion to accentuate the

rhythmic theme of the show.

The group’s tour of Winnipeg, Edmonton, Calgary and Toronto is different from past tours because, in addition to the performances, their goal is to connect the Filipino-American youth of Iskwelahang Pilipino with the Filipino-Canadian youth of Magdaragat Philippines Inc. here in Winnipeg. As part of this partnership, the youth from the two organizations will have the opportunity to rehearse and perform folk dances with live music together at Folklorama on

August 13 and August 14 at the Pearl of the Orient Philippine Pavilion, Petrus Hall, 2624 Inkster Blvd.

The Iskwelahang Pilipino (IP) Rondalla was established in 1986 by Cristina Castro under the musical direction of classical guitarist, Michael Dadap, within the Iskwelahang Pilipino cultural school in Boston. Dadap, and his

successor Christi-Anne Castro, shaped the IP Rondalla into a versatile ensemble capable of playing folk, popular, and art music, as well as contemporary compositions. Significantly, the first generation of players quickly found that they could incorporate dance and movement into their repertoire, a first for rondallas in general and a signature of the IP

Rondalla to this day.

Aside from their appearances at the Pearl of the Orient Philippine Pavilion, the IP Rondalla of Boston will perform at Folklorama in the Park, on the Lyric Stage in Assiniboine Park on Sunday, August 12 at 7:00 p.m., and at the Portage Place Mall on Monday, August 13 at 12:00 p.m.
