Kikiam journalism One of the things I love but cannot seem to find here in Davao City is kikiam, a kind of Chinese sausage that my mother used to buy at a store along Rizal Avenue close to the LRT station near Monumento, Caloocan City. The only kikiam that seems to be sold here is the street version, which is actually just an elongated form of fish balls (although I remember reading somewhere that it’s made of pork, not fish). The authentic kikiam is soft, savoury, sweet, and garlicky, and it goes well with pansit or even plain rice. For me, though, it’s best eaten by itself.

It was the street food version that became a trending topic in the Philippines in the week before the Southeast Asian (SEA) Games opened. As host of the games, the Philippines was tasked to welcome, transport, accommodate, and feed the athletes, but the first few days had some glitches. One foreign team, for example, was brought to the wrong hotel, and when they were taken to the right one they were made to wait for a few hours before they could check in. The Philippine Southeast Asian Games Organizing Committee (PHISGOC) issued an apology

and vowed to do better, but by then the damage had been done.

As it turned out, much of the damage was uncalled for, and this is where kikiam comes in. The coach of the Philippine Women’s National Football Team posted on social media that her athletes were served the street version during breakfast, along with rice and egg and nothing else at the WhiteWoods Hotel in Cavite where they were staying. Mainstream media immediately pounced on the post and reported it as true, and it caught on immediately given the glitches of the previous day.

Kikiam jokes flooded social media even as accusations were made of incompetence, lack of planning, corruption, and all of the above.

For some reason the hotel took a few days to explain, but when it did, it shut down the accusations completely.

WhiteWoods management said what they served was chicken sausage, which was apparently mistaken for kikiam; not only that, the hotel served a buffet for breakfast and not just sausage with rice and egg.

The clincher was when the hotel said the coach had apologized to management and staff and

admitted she was not even present at the hotel during breakfast. She had just seen a photo of the food and concluded that it was kikiam.

Another case was the Philippine Daily Inquirer’s report that the Biñan Football Stadium still had not been completed. In its online report, it showed a photo of a stadium that indeed did not match one’s expectation of a world-class facility. The problem, however, was that the photo was not of the Biñan field but of the University of the Philippines-Diliman football field. The Biñan city government demanded an apology, which the Inquirer quickly issued.

And then there was veteran radio reporter Ricky Velasco who reposted a photo of a Philippine flag being used as a table cover for a buffet, angrily saying the SEA Games organizers were violating the constitution and disrespecting the flag. The problem was that the photo he reposted was taken a few years ago in a different context; the original poster was angered that his photo had been misused.

It’s not just Philippine media that have been making wrong reports. A South China Morning Post (SCMP) story claimed that Singapore’s Muslim athletes were

served pork, and critics used it as further proof of the supposed incompetence of the organizers.

But the Singapore National Olympic Council (SNOC) immediately refuted the report, saying the SCMP’s claim that it had interviewed an official of the SNOC was not true.

These episodes say a lot about how the media, despite their protestations and claims to professionalism, have stooped a little low just to show the current administration in a bad light. To be sure there have been lapses, and Malacañang itself has said it would conduct an investigation immediately after the games to find out what went wrong and who was at fault. But in the cases cited above, all it would have taken was to ask the other side for comment.

That’s basic journalism, but it has apparently been replaced now by kikiam journalism.

How to avoid a blue Christmas Tis the season once again! The holiday season is undoubtedly the most wonderful time of the year for many of us who look forward to it. Sometimes, depending on the situation we’re in, we may anticipate the holidays with dread and anxiety.

In 2014, Virgin Pulse, a market leader in employee health engagement released a study called “Tis the season for stress” featuring participation from 1,000 individuals from the United States and Canada. The study found 70 per cent of employees are significantly more stressed during the holidays. The data indicated that more than 10 per cent of those respondents said they are between 60 and 100 per cent more stressed.

Well, it is now December and in the midst of our preparations, we need to be mindful of the possibility of being at risk for stress. Let’s face it; we wear different hats in our lives. We are workers, spouses, parents, caregivers, and even volunteers in our community. With this in mind, stress can be unavoidable and maintaining control over deadlines and personal

responsibilities may seem nearly impossible. The good news is there are some ways to help relieve the stress.

Work hard but don’t play too hard There is nothing wrong with the usual obligatory family gatherings, however, an overabundance of get together parties may lead to stress for some people. Particularly for those who struggle with finances, finding affordable gifts can be a stressful exercise already, how much more so if you commit to many gift-giving gatherings?

Carrying unmanageable debt may unwittingly bring on unnecessary stress in the New Year. In addition, partying too hard may lead to feelings of guilt and worry as a result of overindulgence.

Also, over-committing to many holiday invitations may lead you to missing out on important family time.

Recharge A company called TSheets conducted a study in 2018 regarding how many days of paid time off employees are earning and how much time off they are not taking. They found

that approximately 573 million vacation days go unused. The study has also found a link between unused vacation and cardiovascular health. Women who allow six or more years to pass between vacations are eight times more likely to develop heart disease, while men who skip their annual vacation have a 32 per cent greater risk of dying of a heart attack. In addition, usage of time off can decrease mental and emotional stress, which in turn can decrease physiological impacts like muscle tension and body aches. While it can understandably be difficult to take time off during the holidays for some people, it is important to make an attempt to do so.

Work will always be there when you return to your desk or your workstation. No one wants to be stressed from an illness; it’s just not worth it.

Squeeze in some exercise Exercise is a well-known natural treatment for stress because it pumps up the endorphins, according to the Mayo Clinic. Endorphins are the hormones responsible for producing the brain’s “feel-good” neurotransmitters. While it may not seem to be a lot, a 30-minute walk at lunch break is actually

considered good exercise, as it not only gets the body moving, it can also help reduce feelings of stress.

While it may be difficult to manage stress during this busy time, taking appropriate measures to alleviate some of the stress may even help avoid carrying over the holiday pressures into the New Year.

Fear and worry – feng shui ways to handle both There is energy of attraction, and it can be positive or negative.

When it melds with positive or negative energy flows of feng shui, it can create combustion of the best kind – news of a promotion, a raise, recognition or a job. When combined with difficult energy, it can contribute to problems such as job loss, relationship, money or health problems.

One way we magnify the shifting feng shui energies is with our internal energy.

We do that in two ways: by fear and by focus. Focused attention helps us reach goals and visualize what we want to occur.

Fear is another story. Whether it’s worry or panic, both are fearbased and their energy is just as magnetic. Worse, it’s magnetic to the things we don’t want to happen. When you find yourself full of worry, it’s easy to stress about it and give into that worry.

We can often visualize worst-case scenarios and fill our minds with unpleasant scenarios and images.

The more we give in to the worry, the stronger the energy we are giving to the thing we don’t want.

Here are some feng shui tips to help you manage worry and fear, and shift your energy toward positive action.

Remove all blocks near the front door – Worry can often be a symbol of a blockage. Look first to your front door area. If this is cluttered or cramped, you’ll want to remove the block.

Look carefully at your front door toward the street. Is your porch full of plants and benches so that the entry is cramped? Inside, is the foyer light, bright and open? What about the walkway to your front door? One woman I know had a walkway lined with old, dead potted plants, chairs that were too

big for the small porch, and even had old hand weights at the front where weeds and grass had grown around them. She was forever worried about money and her husband was always out of work.

Life never got better for her and over time grew worse. Ensure that your front entry is neat and open to lift your energy and the energy that enters your home. Every time you walk into your front door and see something dead, broken, or in disrepair, it weighs on your mind. This compounds your worry and fear energy. Keep the entry clean, clear and inviting helps to give you a better outlook.

Control fear by checking for water leaks – Water is the element of fear. If you have worries, give yourself peace of mind by checking all the plumbing for leaks. If your toilet runs, make sure it is sealed properly and doesn’t run. Dripping water is a type of torture the same way worry is. Tighten your seals against it.

Monitor dark colors – Whether you have dark colours in your home or wear dark colours, these are the colours of fear and worry. Lighten up your wardrobe to help lighten your mind. Open windows and remove heavy drapes and dark colours with lighter versions. Have a big blue sofa? Lighten it up with a linencoloured slipcover. Giving your home more light and colour helps to break up your mind from the dark cobwebs of worry.

Tackle hidden junk – Fear and worry are like spiders that like those dark corners we don’t see easily. If your mind is a spinning wheel of fear and worry, tackle those drawers, cabinets, and closets where you have stuff piled up, hidden from view. Besides, cleaning up and clearing energy

for new things and opportunities to come to you, it also symbolically rids those dark corners of your mind as well.

Unstick cramped energy – If you have furniture that is too big for the room or there is not enough room to move around, that cramped energy works on your mind by filling it with worry. A home that’s cramped can cause pressure in the mind.

Relieve that pressure by giving your home more space for energy to move freely. Removing the oppressiveness in your home helps to relieve the oppressiveness of your mind.

Create a view – Too often we are filled with worry because we can’t see out from the vision in our head. If your home has your views blocked or windows are grown over with plants, the effect is to keep your mind shuttered, too. Try to create a view in your home that lets you see past your four walls.

This is a wonderful way to shift your perspective and “see” new ways to handle problems that you might not have thought of.

FENG SHUI Q&A Question: Today was my birthday. I have always loved my birthday and always feel a need to really celebrate. This birthday

wasn’t much different, but it was disappointing. My husband started fighting with me and it was just not my best day. I was wondering if you have some feng shui tips to make my upcoming year a good one. Thanks so much for your podcasts and sharing your insights with us.

Answer: I love this question – and happy birthday to you! You know, each year your birthday is considered your lucky day. It’s wonderful you feel it’s a special day (it is!) and because celebrating you, is a wonderful thing to do. Honouring yourself on your special day is a great idea, and it’s an energetic “re-set” for yourself.

The number associated with the date of your birthday is also considered your lucky number.

That means you should try to plan something special or important on those days of each of the 12 months, because luck will be with you.

You also have a secondary day of luck, and that is if you have a birthday date that is a number that can be reduced, such as the number 14, that means that 5 is also a lucky number because 1+4=5 – watch those days, too, for good news.

Make a plan for your whole year on your birthday.

Think of it as a time to set up our personal goals and ambitions because you’ll have the extra luck of the day behind you.

Buy yourself a lottery ticket, something special, or indulge in some pampering. Plan out a year of things that you’ll do for yourself that you enjoy, such as attending a favourite concert, visiting a friend, or traveling somewhere new.

And while you’re thinking of somewhere you’ll go this year, think of somewhere you’ll grow this year. Can you do something that stretches you, like play bridge, learn a language, and go to a self-growth retreat? You get the idea!

Pasko sa Pinas - Christmas in the Philippines “Ibang-ibang talaga ang pasko sa Pinas.” –Yeng Constantino What is Christmas? Christmas can mean various things to many people. For one thing, Christmas can mean the presents under the tree, Santa Claus, the Christmas dinner, mistletoe, being with family, and so much more. Christmas has a different meaning for everyone. It is a special occasion and everyone celebrates Christmas differently.

For example, in the Philippines, Christmas is a joyous and much awaited part of the year. It’s the time where the family usually gets together.

For many Filipinos, Christmas is the most anticipated event throughout the whole year.

Although the Philippines sees no snow during this time of the year, the Christmas joy is still spread around the whole country in several other ways. Even without the snow and pine trees, you can still tell that it is Christmas. Countless lights and decorations are placed everywhere you look, left to right, up and down. For example, there is the parol, a star lantern, which is an essential Philippine decoration, filled with colour and lights. It represents the guiding light; the star of Bethlehem.

Christmas in the Philippines is not only about the beautiful decorations, but as well as the traditions. Christmas in the Philippines is a mixture of Western and native Filipino traditions. For example, the typical Santa Claus, the Christmas tree and Christmas cards and singing Christmas carols are all inherited from cultures of the West. However, all of them have been adapted to fit the Filipino nature and personality.

For example, in the Philippines, singing Christmas carols plays a big part of the Christmas occasion.

Most kids actually go door to door during the Christmas season to sing for the people. They bring along with them handmade instruments or tambourines. Sometimes their

audience gives them a reward for their singing.

Another very important tradition in the Philippines is the mass held in the churches right before midnight strikes. This mass is called simbang gabi or Misa de Gallo, which means midnight mass that is held every night of those nine days.

On Christmas Eve, right after simbang gabi, Noche Buena is held. This is the Christmas Eve dinner with family. This usually represents unity amongst the family members and relatives.

It’s not the amount of food that matters; it’s being with the family that counts.

Christmas in the Philippines sounds like a really fun

experience. I personally haven’t experienced it myself. I was born in the Philippines but immigrated here when I was still a baby. I have visited the Philippines here and there, but never during Christmas.

My family always used to say, “Christmas in Canada, is nothing compared to Christmas in the Philippines!” It makes me want to fly to the Philippines to experience it myself! I really hope I’ll be able to experience Christmas in the Philippines, one day.

There has been much debate throughout the years about the mobility rights of landed immigrants. This is a question that is sensitive to landed PNs, stated supporters, and, of course, to provincial nominee programs that have invested a great deal of time and effort to attract nominees for the economic benefit of their provinces. The Manitoba Provincial Nominee Program (MPNP), as a good example, screens applicants on connections to Manitoba to ensure that the province is their final destination or true destination in Canada.

The provinces can and do select applicants on the basis of where they will settle. Manitoba does not nominate applicants to settle

in British Columbia, Ontario or anywhere else other than Manitoba. However, selection and even landing declarations do not ensure that provincial nominees will end up in the province that nominated them. The province can take steps to ensure that their nominees remain in their province up to their landing but can they force them to remain there?

Canada has the Charter of Rights and Freedoms, which does take precedent over immigration laws. Every permanent resident and Canadian citizen has certain inalienable rights under the Charter, including mobility. The language of section 6(2) is clear.

“Every citizen of Canada and every person who has the status of

Are landed provincial nominees free to move outside the province? a permanent resident of Canada has the right (a) to move to and take up residence in any province; and (b) to pursue the gaining of a livelihood in any province.”

This right of mobility is not restricted by time in the province after landing but can impact on those who have supported the nomination of the individual.

The province is within their right of selection and federal provincial agreement to limit nomination to persons they determine will settle in the province. The provincial rights are set down in the Immigration and Refugee Protection Act and Regulations. IRPA sets forth

the basic requirements under economic immigration, which includes provincial nomination, IRPA s. 12(2): “A foreign national may be selected as a member of the economic class on the basis of their ability to become economically established in Canada;” and the Regulations, s. 87(1): “For the purposes of subsection 12(2) of the Act, the provincial nominee class of persons who may become permanent residents on the basis of their ability to become economically established in Canada.”

The intention and ability to settle in the province is gauged by each provincial immigration authority and is an important part of their due diligence and nomination process. Provincial immigration authorities look for evidence of genuine connections to their province, such as the presence of close bona fide, confirmed family supporters, past study in the province, confirmed and unconfirmed job offers, skilled trade evaluations, etc.

Family continues to be one of the most reliable indications of final destination. Family members and close friends often encourage applicants to follow them to Manitoba to support the settlement and integration of newly arrived members in the province. The dramatic growth in the Filipino population in Manitoba is witness not only to supportive family and friends but also the effectiveness of this indicator.

It is important for all applicants and supporters to understand that provincial authorities have the right under federal-provincial agreements and immigration law to make their selections dependent upon destination. Provinces do not nominate applicant based upon a chance they would remain, but by a measured assessment process.

Provincial nominees are defined by the confirmed support that they have from their province of nomination, IRPR s. 87(2) (a)… “they are named in a nomination certificate issued by the government of the province under a provincial nomination agreement between that province and the Minister.” Further, their destination in Canada must

remain that of the province of nomination: “they reside in the province that has nominated them,” IRPR s. 87(2) (b). Their genuine intention is screened throughout the application process up to landing at the port of entry.

The province can withdraw their support or nomination at any time throughout the process if they have good reason to suspect that the destination of their nominee is elsewhere in Canada.

Canada is a country of rights and laws, which are also extended to provincial nominees, both within the process and upon landing. Provincial and federal immigration authorities advise applicants of their concerns, including those of destination, throughout the process. This warning also comes from the Canadian Charter under “natural justice” or procedural fairness (see Section 7). The provincial programs can withdraw their support and question the eligibility of supporters who have a bad record of supporting nominees who left the province following landing.

Yes, you are free to move but your actions can, and probably will, impact negatively upon those who declared their support for your nomination. The best advice is to be honest throughout and if Manitoba is not your true or final destination, then consider the option of Express Entry, which is flexible on the question of destination. The best policy is always honesty and keeping a clean record. Governments cannot limit mobility of permanent residents or citizens under the Charter but they can disqualify persons of risk who have a questionable nomination history.

My advice is to be honest in all disclosures. but also to be aware of the rights and privileges we all enjoy as Canadians.

Seafood City has finally come to town

by Lucille Nolasco Just in time for the holidays, the popular Filipino supermarket chain, Seafood City, opened its doors in Winnipeg on Thursday, November 28.

As evidenced by the long line-up as early as 6:00 a.m. at the Garden City Shopping Centre, many kababayans are excited to see, feel, and try the different offerings of Seafood City.

During an interview on CKJS Radio’s Afternoon Pasada back in May 2019, the chain’s marketing director, Red Smith said, “We have so much to offer our customers. We would like to bring our core values as Filipinos through our store, our products and our service. As our slogan says, Seafood City Supermarket is all about ‘celebrating true Filipino goodness.’”

Prior to the public opening, members of the media, bloggers and social media influencers were invited on Tuesday, November 26th, to get a first taste of the many Filipino food favourites and offerings, as well as a tour of the different aisles of the stores featuring varied Filipino products.

Hanging banners showing different Filipino traits and traditions – like bayanihan, love of family, pamana and others adorn the store filled with a wide

selection of fresh and frozen fish and other seafood.

Seafood City Supermarket is a welcome addition to the growing number of iconic Filipino brands setting up shop in Winnipeg – to the delight of many kababayans missing home.

Canada’s first Jollibee restaurant – hailed as the McDonald’s of the Philippines – opened on Ellice Avenue at Milt Stegall Drive on December 15, 2016. A second Jollibee location opened at the Northgate Mall on November 28, 2017.

More recently, Max’s Restaurant opened its first location in Western Canada at 1255 St. James St. on April 5, 2019.

Seafood City Winnipeg is located at 2311 McPhillips Street, attached to the Garden City Shopping Centre.

Creating space for clarity and healing On Friday November 15, the members of ANAK Inc. welcomed 55 Filipino-Canadian youth to their annual youth forum. The topic this year was; Kalinawan: Exploring FilipinoCanadian Mental Wellness. The word kalinawan means clarity.

The youth, ages 14 to 19, came from all over Winnipeg.

Some of them were born here in Canada, some were born in the Philippines and some were even born overseas in other countries, but the one thing that they all have in common is that they are all members of the Philippine diaspora. The youth in our community form the metaphorical bridge that connects both our motherland and Canada – the land that we now live on as settlers. As the next generation of FilipinoCanadians, it is important for each and every one of them to feel like they are seen and heard by their community. This includes their perspective on some of the most difficult topics, such as the trauma of migration, separation from family, strained relationships with parents, puberty, first loves, anxiety, loneliness, and depression. Teenagers often experience hardships but are rarely given the space to discuss them or are dismissed as being maarte [dramatic]. Without the chance to share their stories, they are denied the opportunity to heal.

The reason for the forum was to give them a chance to explore what it means to take care of their mental wellness, and to challenge the stigmas about mental health that exist within the Filipino community.

Some of the best and brightest in our community came to share their stories and guide our youth on their journey that day. The afternoon was spent with the ANAK team guiding the youth through a series of empowering exercises to build them up and

connect with their peers. The morning was spent getting to know three members of the community during some incredible workshops. We had personal trainer, graphic designer, and creator and owner of FitPak, Steve Ramos with his workshop called, “#Grateful by teamfitpak: How the Act of Gratitude Can Change Your Life;” artist, photographer and LGBT2SQ+ advocate Ally Gonzalo with his workshop titled “#NoFilter: how unfiltering our social media impacts our mental health and wellness;” and Dr. Hygiea Casiano, Associate Medical Director at Adult Forensic Services, Forensic Psychiatrist and Child and Adolescent Psychiatrist at the Manitoba Adolescent Treatment Centre, and Assistant Professor for the Department of Psychiatry at the University of Manitoba who did a workshop called “Positive Psychology for Youth.”

Dr. Casiano also delivered our keynote address.

To be honest, I wish a day like this would have been available to me as a young teenager, and I think many of the adults in the room felt the same. Discussing mental wellness has always been so taboo within the Filipino community but I believe it is our responsibility to break that cycle within our youth. Our history as colonized people has followed us into the spaces that we have settled. It is not a coincidence that many of the issues our youth face have to do with their self-worth.

For example, as young children we are told to stay out of the sun so as not to “get darker” (as if there is something wrong with the way our skin naturally turns to a deep gold in the sun). After moving to Canada, surrounded by people with much fairer skin, how does one feel seen or even feel beautiful when they have been conditioned to feel less because of

their darker skin colour? Or in the case of someone who shoulders the burden of unrealistic expectations from their parents, how does a young person express a need for boundaries, when the parents themselves have not healed? For those who suffer with depression and anxiety, when you have been used to being told not to take up space with your feelings, seeking help can feel like you are being a burden.

Investing the time and money

to ensure the youngest leaders in our community have space to acknowledge and heal from their mental and emotional struggles is an investment in the future of the Filipino community, and therefore, ensures that the piece we contribute as FilipinoCanadians to the global Filipino community is fortified with the resilience of our ancestors and equipped with the tools of modern psychology. In short, when we as a community ensure our children

feel seen, heard, and valued by the community around them, they blossom. When they are taught how to cope with their negative emotions in a healthy way, we create space for not just growth, but for true vulnerability, healing and a very bright future.

Hiwalay sa asawa si Jam, may kambal na anak, sasandali pa lang silang magkakilala ni Karla ay nanligaw na ito agad sa singeractress.

At buo ang tapang ni Jam, hindi nito niligawan si Karla sa kalye at sa bar, nagpunta ito sa bahay ng mag-iina at pormal na humarap sa pamilya ng singeractress.

May kuwentong lumabas na hindi boto sa lalaki ang mga anak ni Karla, partikular na si Daniel, pero hindi pala iyon totoo.

Nasa isang estado naman si Daniel na nakita nito ang mga pakikipagrelasyon ng kaniyang ina. Mas marami ang lungkot kesa sa ligaya. Natural, anak lang ito na nagmamalasakit sa kaniyang nanay kaya hindi pa nito isandaang porsiyentong tanggap si Jam Ignacio.

Pero ang tanong – may nanalo na ba sa giyera ng puso? Hindi ba’t argumento lang naman ng pag-ibig at relihiyon ang walang malinaw na kinauuwiang panalong resulta?

The music and heart of Paul Ong

by Lucille Nolasco Local singer Paul Ong’s fifth annual concert for a cause featured the famed Winnipeg Symphony Orchestra and the kids of Sistema Winnipeg.

Paul serenaded the audience with delightful classics, accompanied by the WSO led by its lively conductor, Naomi Woo. In an interview with CKJS Radio’s Afternoon Pasada a few weeks before the event, Ong said that it’s interesting how all of this evolved. From a simple fundraiser for Team Canada participating in the 2015 World Championships of the Performing Arts (WCOPA) to a thanksgiving concert, the annual benefit concert has grown to help more students and young people.

“This all started because I really wanted to use music to give back to the community. In the process, I realized that more than the giving back part, I also love giving an opportunity to these kids to perform on a bigger stage.”

The event held on November

17 at Tec Voc High School raised a total of $28,000, for the benefit General Wolfe School, which received $3,000, and Sistema Winnipeg with $25,000.

The donation to General Wolfe School will go to the Children’s Heritage Fund of the Winnipeg School Division. Donations to the registered charity help enhance the educational experiences of students who attend schools in the Winnipeg School Division.

Sistema Winnipeg is an afterschool program that provides daily lessons to young people from kinder to grade 12 in partnership with the Winnipeg School Division, Seven Oaks School Division and the Winnipeg Symphony Orchestra.

Ong said he is grateful for everyone’s help and involvement for this year’s concert for a cause, which featured the 60-piece orchestra and a 40-member choir.

“I am so grateful to everyone in the community for allowing us to use the show as a platform to help the community. This is surely a collective effort. Again, thank you very much!”

“Perfect naman ang mga ginawa niya, pati ang pakikipaglaro niya sa mga camera, e, perfect din, pero siya pa ang nagre-request na ulitin ang pagkanta niya,” kuwento ng cameraman.

Kahit ang glam team ng sikat na singer ay wala ring masabi kay Lea Salonga, sobrang propesyonal daw kasi, ni kaunting kaangasan at kayabangan ay walang bitbit ang pinakasikat na bumida sa Miss Saigon.

Five-hour run against cancer raises $3,166 Noel Lapuz celebrated his 50th birthday on November 16, 2019 with his family and friends running from 7:00 a.m. to 12 noon around The Forks area in Winnipeg. The five-hour fund-raising project called Run, Noel! A 5-hour run for cancer raised $3,166 that will go to the CancerCare Manitoba Foundation to continue its fight against cancer.

“I would like to give back to our community by running to fight cancer and to promote love and kindness… I’m really inspired and really happy how the community has supported this very humble fundraising drive,” said Lapuz who hopes to turn this into an annual fundraising event.

This project was to honour the memory of his close friend and mentor, Nancy Anderson, who lost her fight with cancer in December 2017.
