During this COVID-19 pandemic, I sometimes think of Natalie, a very special friend that I made five years ago. I visited her weekly during the last few years of her life. Unknowingly, she taught me simple and valuable lessons that give me comfort and hope during this global crisis today.

Natalie was a woman in her mid-90s who lived in a nursing home close to where I live. We became friends in the last three years of her life. She had very poor eyesight and was wheelchair bound. Her white hair usually fell softly onto her shoulders and she wore cozy sweaters and blankets whenever I saw her, regardless of what the weather was like outside.

For most of the time that I knew her, she was mentally sharp.

During our visits I often brought along one of my children, and her smile lit up the room when I did.

“Hello little boy!” she called out when we arrived. She let them feed Ginger the cat whenever they asked. We sat together, prayed together and chatted about the weather and our families.

Some days, she was tired or sick.

There were also times when she was sad.

My favourite conversations were about what she had learned as a mother over the years.

“Children always want to know that you are there, even if they

think they don’t, and even when they say they don’t,” she told me one day.

She lived through the Second World War and told me what it was like growing up in Winnipeg during that time. Natalie had never used the Internet or e-mailed anyone in her life, nor did she watch reality TV and she never cared about the latest must-have anything. “I don’t need much!” she told me often, and also, “I try to be grateful for what I have” – this from a woman whose worldly possessions fit into a small closet and cabinet in the room.

Her days were peaceful and simple, but I’m sure they were lonely and agonizing too. I would marvel at how different we were, yet the same in many ways. We had similar spiritual perspectives, worked in healthcare, and were mothers of three boys. Our visits were never silent, were sometimes cheerful and sometimes tearful.

But I looked forward to seeing her.

A force greater than the both of us brought us together.

Natalie was my friend. It’s been a few years since she died but I think of what she told me and how helpful her words can be to everyone during this pandemic.

In a nutshell, her wisdom is: Keep it simple. Cherish family.

Sadness and joy are part of life.

Be thankful.

Finding hope during uncertain times There is a lot going on in our world right now. The pandemic has had an impact on health, employment, the economy, politics, social interactions, schooling, and many other ways.

There are also tensions between people, within and between countries. It is natural to feel helpless and experience strong emotions such as sadness, anxiety and anger.

Some more reflections on my conversations with Nettie: • Keep those who are suffering, grieving, alone, lost, and ill in your thoughts and prayers. Mourn and identify with the situation of another.

Contrary to what some might say, wishing good for another is not passive or pointless. It is a powerful intention that leads to more good deeds, humbles us and leads us to more appreciation of what we have. Sooner or later, each and every single one of us will be in need of compassion and assistance from another.

• Be careful of prejudice, hatred and the spread of irrational fear. Those who discriminate and judge never have truthful facts to support their message.

Fear is used to keep people apart, and prevents us from truly seeing each other. There are a lot of messages of intolerance circulating right now. Every time

we refuse to spread messages of hate and educate others, instead, we contribute to peace. If you look for the good in others, you will find it.

• Connect with others. Now is an opportune time to send a card or e-mail, call, or video chat with a loved one, especially if you haven’t spoken in a while.

• Pay it forward. If you have been the beneficiary of someone’s act of good will, take your turn and be kind. This will renew people’s faith that humans are good and generous. Acts of goodwill can be done easily by donating to the poor and needy, One of the most valuable lessons that I have learned from my friendship with Natalie is that humans are resilient, and this gives me hope during these uncertain times. She showed me that people are more alike than different. Everyone wants to belong. Everyone feels pain.

Everyone falls in love. Everyone experiences delight.

Realizing and remembering this truth will get us through this crisis. It will be difficult at times, but humans have proven time and time again that healing and growth come out of suffering.

Mayo Clinic Q and A: Large family reunion may carry some risks for COVID-19 transmission Dear Mayo Clinic: I was invited to an extended family reunion barbecue this summer and I am torn on whether to attend or not. About 50 people were invited and the event will be held at a state park. Is it safe to attend?

Answer: So, that’s a great question. This summer is going to be unlike any we’ve had before, and I know people are trying to make a lot of really difficult decisions about what kinds of activities they might participate in.

I think as a general rule of thumb there are four dimensions that we would encourage people to think about as they try and determine the risks associated with participating in certain activities: Time, space, people and place.

If you think about time, shorter activities generally will have a lower risk. With a reunion, it’s likely to be a longer event, which would increase the risk. Space refers to how much space you have around you and how much control you have over that space.

A state park with an abundance of space has the potential to lessen risk. We’ve been recommending 6 feet based on the droplet transmission that COVID-19 is spread by, so if the setting of the reunion allows for attendees to maintain space to limit everyone’s exposure, that would lessen the risk. It will undoubtedly

be difficult for people to avoid greetings like hugging or shaking hands with family members they may not have seen in a long time, but those can increase the risk of transmission of infection and should be avoided where possible. With people, consider how busy the area is. If there’s a large crowd, your risk of getting infected is going to be higher than in an area where there are few people. A crowd of 50 people, especially if they have traveled from different parts of the country, could be high risk and gatherings of this size are still prohibited in some states. Whether or not the people around you are wearing masks is another important factor to pay attention to especially in indoor settings or where physical distancing is difficult. Place refers to whether the activity is taking place inside or outside. We know that transmission is much less likely to occur in outdoor settings.

As for the barbecue part of your gathering, we have no scientific evidence to suggest that the virus is spread through food itself, which is good news. So the risk of getting sick really comes from being in close proximity to others or through touching common surfaces like utensils used for serving food. That’s why as people consider expanding their social circles over the summer, one of

the things we’re recommending is to pick one or two friends or families that you consistently will spend time with and that you trust are also doing a good job of their own physical distancing rather than doing something like hanging out with a different friend or family every night of the week.

This reduces the risk for all of you in that group, and if someone were to get sick within that group, it would make the number of people exposed much lower as well.

There is likely to be a wide age range of people attending a family reunion. These precautions are especially important to protect the older adults or people with underlying health issues who may be at higher risk of developing severe illness if infected.

Any gathering of this size bringing together people from different areas of the country for a prolonged period of time will carry some risk of transmission of infection. Safer alternatives, like a virtual reunion, should be carefully considered, especially if there are family members who are high-risk. If proceeding with an in-person event additional precautions like having all attendees wear a mask, providing easy access to hand hygiene supplies, frequently disinfecting high-touch surfaces, and maintaining physical distancing

whenever possible can help to reduce the risks. Invitees should also be advised that if anyone within their household is feeling sick they should not attend.

Citizenship by descent: parent defined It is possible for a child of a Canadian parent to claim Canadian Citizenship by descent under subsection 3(1) of the Citizenship Act. The definition of “parent” has been changed because of a recent court ruling.

The Quebec Supreme Court ruled that non-biological, legal children of Canadians can have the same citizenship rights as biological children.

The change applies to children who were born through assisted human reproduction, such as surrogacy arrangements undertaken by a Canadian citizen.

It means that children of same-sex couples and couples with fertility issues can qualify for citizenship rights. The qualification is that one of the legal parents must be Canadian. The claim for a citizenship certificate does not apply to adopted children who have a different route to Canadian

citizenship.

The change is reflected in the IRCC Bulletin of July 15, 2020, entitled “Program delivery update: Definition of ‘parent’ for determining citizenship by descent” (www.canada.ca/en/ immigration-refugee-citizenship/ coporate/publications-manulas/ operational-bulletins-manulas/ updates/2020-parent-definition).

The bulletin covers “children born abroad in the first generation who have a legal parent-child relationship at birth but no biological link to the Canadian parent.” They are now eligible to apply for citizenship by descent.

Under the former interpretation of subsection 3(1) such submissions faced refusal because there was no biological link (genetic or gestational). The consequences were major, especially for parents who rely on assisted human reproduction to build their

families, particularly LGBTQ2+ Canadians.

The change in understanding is evident in the Application for Canadian Citizenship Certificate for Adults and Minors (CIT 0001), which itself changed in July 2020. The form is informative and provides screening questions to ensure applicants know if they may qualify. Do not use the CIT 0001 if you or your child is a Canadian permanent resident applying to be granted Canadian citizenship by right of descent. The process is intended for parents who want to pass on the right to claim citizenship by descent to their child born outside Canada and who are themselves born in Canada or naturalized Canadians before the birth of the child in question.

It covers applicants who have never possessed a citizenship certificate. Both statements are qualified by the clear warning that the applicant was not adopted

by their Canadian parent because such an applicant must use a different process to apply for Canadian citizenship.

If you yourself or your legal child born outside Canada are considering applying for citizenship by descent, make sure you use the updated CIT 0001 form, which was changed effective “07-2020.” You will know if you are using the correct form by checking for this date on the lower left hand corner of page 1 of 13. The third page, or 3 of 13, identifies the changes in not only the form but the law itself regarding who is an acceptable parent in question #7: “This parent is my biological parent, adoptive parent, or legal parent at birth.” The option “legal parent at birth” is specific to parents now included and question #8 gives the applicant the chance to explain, “How did parent 1 obtain Canadian citizenship?”

The change in the citizenship

certificate application is evidence of the effect of the court decision in Quebec. The application process and understanding of subsection 3(1) of the Citizenship Act have both changed to accommodate the new reality of child applicants of same sex couples and surrogacy. One of the continuing challenges for all bureaucracies is to be current and up to date with societal changes. It would appear that at least the application for Canadian citizenship certificates by descent is meeting that challenge.

Trombe walls A Trombe wall is a passive solar building design feature used as an alternative to conventional fossil-fuel heating.

Also called a solar wall, it is made from thick masonry with high thermal mass to passively store solar energy in a building.

It was popularized by French architect Felix Trombe in 1964, but its application dates back to ancient times when early humans use thick adobe or stone walls to capture the sun’s energy and slowly release the heat at night when it is cold.

A standard Trombe wall is a south-facing masonry structure separated from the exterior environment by glass and an air space. It absorbs heat from the sun during the day and then slowly releases it in the direction of the building’s interior at night. It is typically 25 to 40 cm (10 to 16 inches) thick and is usually made of concrete, stone or adobe coated with a dark, heat-absorbing material on its exterior surface that absorbs solar heat from the southerly winter sun. To minimize heat loss to the outdoors, a single or double layer of glass is installed 20 to 50 mm (¾ to 2 inches) away from the masonry wall.

This air space allows warm air to steadily conduct inward through the masonry structure.

Heat conducts through a masonry wall at a very slow rate of 25 mm (1 inch) per hour.

Hence, the interior wall does not start radiating heat into the interior until late afternoon or early evening, when windows no longer permit direct solar heating. This means that the heat absorbed by the 20 cmthick masonry wall at 12 noon will penetrate the interior living space by around 8:00 p.m. The time delay coupled with the decline of temperature differences, permits the utilization of varying daytime solar energy as a steadier source of heat during the night.

It can reduce heating costs as the house’s fossil fuelled heating system (furnace, boiler, space heaters, etc.) will be operated at reduced times.

During prolonged overcast days however, the Trombe wall can become a source of heat loss, since there is minimal heat conducted from the exterior towards the interior.

Installing an insulation panel on the interior side, between the collector space and the masonry wall, mitigates the heat loss during prolonged overcast days.

A Trombe wall is a passive solar building design system, which means it does not require any maintenance because it has no moving parts. The construction is relatively simple, inexpensive, and can be easily integrated into an existing home or into new house construction.

By decreasing the need to heat

the home from traditional fossilfuelled equipment, you are reducing your home’s carbon footprint and thus making your home more environment friendly.

Travel amidst COVID-19: The new norm It was only a few short months ago that our world began to turn itself upside down. For most of us, it began in March. Schools and public places closed, people in parts of the world were ordered to stay home. There were curfews set and only a select few were allowed to venture outside in the hopes of securing the basics necessities. The world stood still.

As days passed, the World Health Organization continually updated us with growing numbers of novel coronavirus cases in every corner of the world. Parts of Asia and Europe were hard hit. As months rolled along, the United States, Brazil, Mexico and India became the hot zones.

Closer to home, most of Canada had seen moderate increases while provinces like Ontario and Quebec were the most affected by this relatively new and unknown virus. As I write this and between the time it is published, one can only guess what new information may arise. Thankfully, the numbers in Manitoba are quite low, along with B.C., where I call home.

I am flabbergasted by all the videos of confrontations between people who wear masks and people who don’t. I am a mask wearer. I am not risking the life of my loved ones or friends, it’s that simple. Before the global pandemic, I would regularly shake peoples’ hands. I am a close talker, definitely within the two-metre circle. Now, I find it comically awkward how I have become someone who frightens easily when people get too close. I was at a car dealership and someone put out their hand to shake mine. I felt as if I needed to run away as fast as I could!

In the beginning, I felt the urge to watch or read the news as much as possible. I needed to know how our province was doing from day to day.

Lately, I have grown weary and slowed down on my news consumption.

This is not to say I’ve let my guard down. I don’t attend beach parties or social gatherings, like we’ve seen in the news, where there is not one mask to be seen and two-metre physical distancing be damned! We need to get through this. Let’s not forget what the top docs are telling us.

Looking towards the future, I am beginning to realize that our lives will be changed forever. There will copious amounts of hand sanitizer available in each store and we will most likely have to wait in lines before we go into many stores or businesses. As for one of my favourite past times, that will never be the same. Travelling, whether by car, boat or plane, will be affected.

Cruise line companies have been put on pause. There was nothing harder to watch than when cruise lines sailed aimlessly looking for a city to safely port.

Vehicle travel seems to be the safest bet right now. But you can’t go far.

This year, we’ve taken in the sites around Vancouver Island and practiced extreme physical and social distancing by camping in and around this beautiful place. We’re not alone – apparently tents, travel trailers and RVs have been selling like hot cakes.

Perhaps the hardest hit is air travel. I really don’t anticipate flying any time soon. Unless it is an emergency, or when I go visit my soon-to-be first grand child, that will be it. No way are we hopping on a flight to some favourite destinations such as Mexico or cities in Hawaii, Nevada, Arizona or California – or anywhere in the US for that matter.

But that’s me. Not everyone may feel the same. Recently, I conducted a very brief and non-scientific survey amongst some peers. My goal was to determine whether regular travellers’ habits before COVID-19 will decrease in the coming months. Seems to be a no-brainer – travel would decrease, right? Surprisingly, for majority of those that participated in the survey, it appeared there would be no change. Here are some of the results: 71 per cent of respondents will not change travel habits in the next six months 29 per cent of respondents plan to decrease their amount of travel in the next six months Of the 29 per cent planning to travel less: 14 per cent will decrease their travel from 3-5 to 0-2 times Seven per cent will decrease their travel from six or more to 3-5 times Seven per cent will decrease their travel from six or more to 0-2 times What does this all mean? While the majority won’t experience a change in travel habits, those people who traveled more than 100 kilometres away from home and who travel significantly more (six or more times per year) will see a decrease in their travel habits in the next six months.

In feng shui, deferred maintenance on a house means deferred money. In other words, if you’ve put off replacing that cracked window or cutting down a dead tree, you’re likely not receiving all the money you could be if your home were in good repair.

Why is repairing your home so important to feng shui?

In a word: chi.

The chi, or energy, of a home declines when it’s got leaking faucets or roof, when the paint is peeling or when it’s dirty and cluttered.

Simply looking at a home that’s not in good repair gives a depressed or sad feeling. You see a house – and the occupants who live there – that are in decline.

Millionaires live in beautiful, attractive and maintained surroundings. If you’ve deferred maintaining your house, you could be deferring wealth too.

Rarely is the case that when a homeowner is successful, that the house is falling down. In fact, it’s most often the case that as a homeowner becomes more successful, the more a house represents that success with pretty plantings, fresh paint, clean windows and a clean interior.

That’s because a home with successful occupants often have lawn and cleaning services to help them keep the home in good condition.

But even if you’re not a millionaire, you can still live like one in your home, and often, you’ll find that when the house is neat, tidy, uncluttered and in good repair, you feel better and more confident. A millionaire’s home is usually attractive and clean, and by emulating that, you will raise your home’s chi, which in turn, raises your own.

Improving your home can improve your life. Simply improving the maintenance on your house, your home pays you back in improved energy, greater opportunities and more satisfaction and contentment in life – and, yes, even in money.

Use these tips on home maintenance to the critical areas that help you create millionaire financial energy around your home.

1. Start at the front. If your sidewalk is cracked and lifted from tree roots, it’s unlikely that

opportunity will make it to your front door. Give the front of your house some TLC in the form of a landscape makeover, including checks on sidewalks, porches, mailboxes, light fixtures and front door. Work on your curb appeal – it will pay you in increased income and opportunity.

2. Check for leaks. From gutters to the roof, the kitchen sink to garden hoses, when water is leaking, so is money. Water can also be a source of emotional problems – whether that’s an empty swimming pool (missing water = missing money) or a case of black mould (spending on what you don’t want). When water is either completely missing or too abundant, emotions can be more volatile. Make sure that water issues are carefully attended to because of their emotional/ financial implications.

Sparkling windows represent clarity. Can’t focus or make a decision? Maybe it’s because the windows need cleaning. Windows represent the eyes and the way we take information in. Dirty windows hamper our ability to see our financial situations clearly.

4. Beaten up doors and walls.

When the dog scratches doors, walls are dirty from handprints, the feeling is that opportunity is missing and that life in general is in decline and a feeling of hopelessness settles in. Repaint walls and repair doors. Doors are the way chi enters the house – especially the front door.

Make sure the way to the front door is open and attractive and that all doors work properly and smoothly. A sticky front door stymies opportunity and money and door problems are energy problems.

5. Lighten up to lift your financial chi. Never let light fixtures fill up with bugs or allow bulbs to stay burned out. Dirty lamps or fixtures, dim bulbs and burned out bulbs create the inability to see life clearly or develop initiative in your financial life. Never underestimate the power of lighting to lift your financial chi – or bring it down if they’re burned out.

6. Let the landscape go.

This is a sure way to create severe financial hardship.

7. Hang on to everything. A great way to have less is to hang on to everything. Millionaire closets are neat and orderly and usually aren’t stuffed to the gills.

Creating room for more is the singular best way to achieving more. Don’t be afraid to get rid of as much as possible to create more room in your life for what you want. Money is energy and when your house has too much stuff, there’s little room left for prosperity to come in.

8. Give it a good scrub.

Cleanliness they say is next to godliness, and it’s true. Giving your home’s exterior a good wash with a pressure washer, and the interior a good wash, especially the kitchen results in better energy, and better energy means more money. The kitchen, and stove in particular, represent wealth, so keep them sparkling!

FENG SHUI Q&A Question: In my bedroom the only solid wall is the wall on the side of the door so I can’t place my bed in the command position.

The wall where the bed would be in the command position is all windows. Should I leave my bed on the wall with the door that’s to the left of the bed or move it to the wall with the windows?

Answer: That’s always a dilemma – do you keep the bed on the solid wall where it’s next to the door or put it in the command position with a better view of the door? This is one of those instances where I think it would be better to create a faux wall out of the wall of windows and then move the bed to the faux wall.

The faux wall can be created by adding heavy drapes all the way across the windows because it’s the command wall. Next, place your bed in the center of the wall. Then, pull the drapes back on either side of the bed to give it the appearance of having a solid wall in the middle flanked by two windows.

Moving the bed this way will put your bed in a better position where you can see the door and have the bed centered in the room instead of being too close to the door, which can create problems with your relationship, difficulty sleeping/resting, and a feeling of pressure and inability to fully relax.

Missing Folklorama It was set to run this year from August 2 to 15 at various sites around the city. But, like many summer events, Folklorama has been cancelled due to the COVID-19 pandemic.

Stan Hall, president of the board of directors, said last April, “There will be a time and place where we can all celebrate together, but following the Government of Manitoba guidelines, it cannot be this summer. We look forward to welcoming the world August 1st to 14th, 2021.”

Since it first took place in 1970, Folklorama has been held annually without fail. It has been an exciting event that highlighted

Canada’s multicultural mosaic – the culture, cuisine, and tradition of over 40 countries. Over 20,000 hard-working volunteers from the diverse ethno-cultural communities across the city prepared their pavilions to receive and entertain thousands of visitors everyday for two weeks every year.

In 2019, Folklorama celebrated its 50th anniversary and recorded over 455,000 visits from locals and tourists.

While the pavilions are absent this year, Folklorama organizers have customized their offering to the community. They will bring the festival experience directly to people’s homes, workplaces, and

Manitoba front-line workers receive $1,377 payment The province is issuing payments to 78,442 Manitobans as part of the $120-million Risk Recognition Program to acknowledge front-line workers during the COVID-19 pandemic, Premier Brian Pallister announced on July 29, 2020.

“We want to thank frontline workers and acknowledge the sacrifices they made during the COVID-19 pandemic and the increased risks they faced on the job to provide crucial services,” said Pallister. “We also appreciate Manitobans’ patience as we reviewed every application we received in order to determine

final payment amounts.”

The province will divide $120 million equally among all eligible recipients for a payment of $1,530. As the payments are considered taxable income under federal tax rules, the province has remitted a 10 per cent withholding tax to the Canada Revenue Agency to help recipients when they file their 2020 income tax return. Eligible recipients are being notified via email of a $1,377 direct deposit in their bank account.

Eligible positions included health care, social services, justice, security, transportation,

food and beverage, hotels and essential retail. Payment recipients include 37,060 public-facing essential roles in retail services and lodging, 27,085 in health care, 9,325 in social services and 3,440 in transportation. The province based eligibility criteria on recommendations it received during extensive consultations with business and union representatives.

“Many working Manitobans were exposed to on-the-job risks they’d never experienced prior to the pandemic and we can’t thank them enough for the roles

they played in supporting all Manitobans through this difficult time,” said Pallister.

The Manitoba Risk Recognition Program was offered to workers employed on a part-time or full-time basis from March 2, the start of the provincial state of emergency, until May 29. Applicants must have either worked a minimum 200 cumulative hours, or would have worked that amount but were required to self-isolate under public health orders.

An employee’s total pre-tax employment income during the eligibility period must be

less than $12,500, excluding overtime wages, and they could not be enrolled in the federal Canada Emergency Response Benefit.

The Manitoba government has partnered with the federal government on this cost-sharing program, created with the intention of recognizing lowand middle-income workers. The federal government is providing $90 million, while Manitoba is contributing $30 million.

Back to school in September Classroom learning will resume on September 8, 2020 for all students in kindergarten through Grade 12 at schools across Manitoba following last spring’s suspension caused by the COVID-19 pandemic, Education Minister Kelvin Goertzen announced on July 30.

“The province is welcoming students back to classrooms for the new school year, while working closely with school divisions and Public Health,” said Goertzen.

Back: Restoring Safe Schools guidelines were developed in collaboration with school divisions and public health officials.

Manitoba school divisions and schools will follow these provincial guidelines to finalize and post division plans by mid-August.

Learning in classrooms will be full-time for students in kindergarten through Grade 8 and for special-needs students in all grades, with five days of instruction per week. Some remote learning may be required

for students in grades 9 to 12, based on the ability of high schools to implement necessary public health measures including physical distancing and the use of cohorts (designated groups of students) to minimize the risk of COVID-19 transmission, and to support contact tracing.

Three response levels have been developed to ensure that school divisions and schools are prepared to roll back from inclass learning based on public health advice.

“Manitoba Education and Public Health are working with divisions and individual schools to ensure that as many students as possible return to classroom learning full-time,” said Goertzen.

“Divisions have been working diligently this summer on their individual plans for September, and are refining details for communication, screening, hand hygiene, physical distancing, the use of cohorts and outbreak management to be followed at every one of their schools.”

The guidelines were based on feedback provided by parents, caregivers, students and education stakeholders through an EngageMB survey that began in June. The minister noted tens of thousands of Manitobans have completed the survey, and the government will continue to collect and use this information in adapting plans while the public health situation evolves.
