The Manitoba election race has officially started with Premier Brian Pallister’s visit to the Lieutenant Governor on Monday, August 12. The election is set for September 10, 2019 – more than a full year ahead of the not-so-fixed election date of October 6, 2020. While the election opens another chapter in Manitoba’s history, it also marks the happy end of an era for Flor Marcelino, the first Filipina MLA in Canada and the first female MLA in Manitoba from a visible minority. “I was with [my] son Diwa and his two boys when I learned the writ was dropped Monday afternoon. Immediately I jumped for joy and shouted, ‘I am retired!’” Marcelino announced on Facebook. “The two grandsons ran to me and hugged me.” Marcelino announced that she would not seek re-election on the last day of the spring sitting of the legislature on June 3.
