Gender X now an option on Canadian passports Canadians now have the option to identify their gender on government documents as something other than “F” for female or “M” for male.

Immigration minister, Ahmed Hussen, announced on August 24 that the Government of Canada is implementing an “X” gender designation in Canadian passports, as well as other documents issued

by Immigration, Refugees and Citizenship Canada (IRCC). An “X” will make it easier for people who do not identify as female or male to acquire passports and other government-issued documents that better reflect their gender identity.

Mystic Siquijor 1045 Erin Street Winnipeg, Manitoba Canada R3G 2X1 Phone: 204-956-7845 I remember watching a TV show when I was a teenager — most probably Student Canteen hosted by Eddie Ilarde, Bobby Ledesma, Helen Vela, and Coney Reyes at the time — in which popular singer Jose Mari Chan was explaining why most of the songs he wrote were about love. He said he couldn’t help it because he lived in a country that made it easy to be in love. “The Philippines is a beautiful country,” he said, and I remember cringing at that. How could he even say that? Couldn’t he see how dirty and polluted the country was?

Hasn’t he been outside? This guy needed a reality check, I thought to myself.

It wasn’t until much later that I realized that Jose Mari Chan was right. My first trip outside of Luzon was by ship, and boarding it at the pier in Manila reinforced my negative view of the country.

The water was black and smelled of rotten eggs, and garbage was floating all around. I remember sailing off with the expectation that we would be met with similar circumstances when we arrived at our first stop, Zamboanga City.

Imagine my surprise when we arrived there. Instead of dirty waters, I saw the bluest ones I had ever seen. And when I took a deep breath I was shocked by how fresh the air was, with none of the toxic smell we had left in Manila. I looked around and the port was clean and tidy, and we could walk around without being assaulted by hawkers. The image of Jose Mari Chan popped into my mind and I remember saying to myself he may have been right.

Now that I have been living outside of Metro Manila for more than half of my life I can say that I was definitely wrong about how I saw the Philippines. Over the past 27 years I have been to many places in the country and I have found beauty everywhere I went — even in the most unlikely of places.

Siquijor would be one of them. My family and I had gone on a trip to Dumaguete in late August and decided to take a side trip to the nearby island province.

Dumaguete itself is a wonderful city, filled with old world charm made more beautiful by the warm glow that envelops it in the afternoon. But we were told that Siquijor was more “untouched,” surrounded by white-sand beaches and filled with forests, mangroves, springs, and other natural attractions. We were also curious about its reputation as the “supernatural” capital of the country — with longstanding tales of mangkukulam ang mambabarang — so we decided to take the morning ferry on our second day.

To be honest I had a very different notion of what we would find in Siquijor. I wasn’t afraid of the supernatural stuff because I

don’t believe in such things, but I was concerned that there would be nothing to see or enjoy. No offense to Siquijornons, but I had imagined it to be more like a “barrio” with nipa huts, dirt roads, and old ladies sweeping the yards outside their homes. When we got there, however, a Paradise-like coast that rivalled that of Boracay immediately greeted us.

We also realized that the tourism industry in Siquijor was more developed than in many other places we had gone to. There was a tourism office extension right at the pier, and there a young and courteous police officer showed us a map of the spots we should visit. He also directed us to a tricycle driver and told us exactly how much we should pay him — nothing more, nothing less. We really appreciated this because it meant our driver/tourist guide would not overcharge us.

We drove around the entire island in one day, visiting spots like the spring-fed swimming pool in San Juan, the centuryold balete tree in Lazi where you could dip your feet in the fish spa, the Lazi church built in 1857, the Cambugahay waterfalls, and the government-run but very wellkept Salagdoong Beach Resort.

We actually asked our driver El (yep, that’s his full name) where we could find a mangkukulam or mambabarang, and he flatly said there were none in Siquijor.

Well, there was one barangay, he said, but that was it. The island, as it turned out, is not what many people make it out to be.

Of course many islanders have also decided to own the label and sell voodoo dolls, love potions, amulets, and other items, but this is all just marketing.

Siquijor is mystical — but not in the way you imagine.

From page 1 “X” gender designation in our government-issued documents, we are taking an important step towards advancing equality for all Canadians regardless of gender identity or expression,” said Minister Hussen.

IRCC was the first government department to introduce interim measures on August 31, which include allowing individuals to add an observation to their passport stating their sex should be identified as “X,” indicating that it is unspecified. Interim measures will be available until IRCC is able to print documents with an “X.” Adrian Reyes of Winnipeg told Pilipino Express that she only became an “F” in her official documents when she attained Canadian citizenship earlier this year.

“Although I’m now an “F” on all my documents, the X gender will have a good effect on people who don’t know, or are not sure, of their sexual orientation,” said Reyes. “I have friends who are not sure if they consider themselves female or male. I know it will be easier for them to explain their gender preference with this new X gender identity. They will feel more comfortable to show their ID, like when I got my female gender in my identification documents.

“As part of the LGBT community I’m happy to see things like this because I know that we are moving forward and I know we will be there when we are all going to be equal,” said Reyes.

Anti-immigration rally announced by WCAI Canada is very much part of a wider international community with responsibilities that go far beyond the narrow confines of our cities, provinces and country. We are signatories of international agreements that have to do with support and resettlement of refugees. Prime Minister Trudeau has championed Canada’s international responsibilities by bringing in over 25,000 Syrians displaced by the war in their country. At the same time Quebec, and to a lesser degree Manitoba and other provinces, have seen an increase in the number of refugee claimants streaming north across our border to escape from Trump’s America.

We must be aware of the human tragedy that forces people to take flight to save themselves and their families and also of the reaction of national groups to refugees in particular and immigration in general.

In Manitoba we are particularly sensitive to antiimmigrant and racist activities in both the present and our history. A Brandon man with alleged neo-Nazi sympathies and ties to an organization that’s been denounced as a hate group says he is trying to organize an “anti-immigration” rally in

Winnipeg on September 9. The spokesman, Jesse Wielenga, is the group’s main organizer and vice-president of the Worldwide Coalition Against Islam (WCAI) Canada. This is the same group who gathered in Vancouver in August to preach their hate against immigrants and Islam but were drowned out by 4,000 counter protesters who flocked to Vancouver City Hall. Mr. Wielenga was not deterred by the reaction and in a phone interview with the Winnipeg Free Press was unsure how many supporters would show up for his planned protest.

A local professor with a specialization in neo-fascism warns us all that we must be on guard against WCAI and other hate groups and the potential for public violence. “If these plans go ahead we’ll see some strong counter-organizing by antifascists. We don’t need to see a march by neo-Nazis and white supremacists on the streets of Winnipeg.”

The threat is real and everyone should heed the warnings – we have only to look at the violent confrontation between the American nationalist groups, comprised of Nazis, the KKK and other white supremacist groups

in Charlottesville. Virginia.

The public parade by the white nationalists with Nazi signs, and loud statements that “Jews will not replace us,” ended with the death of one anti-fascist protester and injury to several others when a white nationalist drove his car into their midst.

The scene of Nazis marching and spouting hate for people of different faith and national background is horrific enough without President Trump adding to the hate and division in America. Donald Trump’s defense of the white nationalists, citing a false equivalency between them and the anti-fascist groups, was widely condemned by both Democrat and Republican politicians amongst others. But racist American national leaders including former Grand Master of the KKK David Duke praised his comments. Thanks to Trump, the Nazis are now returning to the main stage in not just America, but in Germany, in Canada and even here in Winnipeg.

All Canadians, whether here in Winnipeg or in Toronto where the Canadian Nationalist Party is also planning a public rally, must be attentive. We, like our American neighbours to the south, have a responsibility to all our citizens.

Hate speech is something that should not be confused with

free expression. Freedom comes with responsibility. We have to ensure that speech is not intended to arouse violence nor hatred of others. This is why we have antidefamation laws.

The Canadian Criminal Code prohibits “Public incitement of hatred s. 319 (1) Every one who, by communicating statements in any public place, incites hatred against any identifiable group where such incitement is likely to lead to a breach of the peace is guilty of (a) an indictable offence and is liable to imprisonment for a term not exceeding two years; or (b) an offence punishable on summary conviction. (2) Every one who, by communicating statements, other than in private conversation, wilfully promotes hatred against any identifiable group is guilty of (a) an indictable offence and is liable to imprisonment for a term not exceeding two years; or (b) an offence punishable on summary conviction.”

If we do not pay attention to the lessons of history, we forget that the Winnipeg General Strike of 1919 was an example of blaming Eastern European immigrants, including Jews, for the trouble. This group has now been replaced in some ways by persons of colour or the Islamic faith. The sentiments were wrong

in 1919, and again in the 1930s when national groups sprung up around the world and again today. There are lessons to learn from history and one is that unfortunately things often repeat themselves.

The current wave of nationalism promoted by Trump and others will hopefully fade away but not before causing untold damage and even a loss of lives. When someone draws distinctions between “us” and “them” we should think twice.

It is important to understand that the majority of Canadians, and even Americans for that matter, are not racist or even support the goals of the white supremacists.

The last planned rally by the nationalists in Boston drew over 20,000 protesters and the planned event did not take place. No Mr. Present, the evil is not on “many sides” but only on one side, the side of hate mongers.

A Taste of Manitoba Excuse me while I blow my nose and wipe the tears away.

Another summer has come and gone. Oh, how I enjoyed endless days of sunlight and fun with the family. Soon enough, it will be winter once again!

Depressing, isn’t it? I promised Ate Emmie that will try to stop crying long enough to write this month’s article.

This is now my third summer living on Vancouver Island, with the rest being spent in Manitoba.

I will never forget the hot humid days walking at The Forks, swimming at Winnipeg Beach or taking a dip at the Kildonan Park outdoor pool. As good as those activities were, it will always be the time with family at BBQs or sitting on the deck that I will cherish. So many great memories were made in Manitoba and sadly, I didn’t have the opportunity to make it back this year. On the bright side, this summer was a bit different. This year, Manitoba came to me. And, oh boy, was it tiring!

Living on the west coast is something special. You

are surrounded by ocean and mountains. It is these very things that attract people from all over the world. In my case, the Burgos Hotel was open for business once again.

My hotel is a pretty special place. It offers three meals a day, majestic views of the mountains and quaint sitting areas amongst lush green gardens. It is also quite affordable! But before you start asking for the web site address or the toll free number, I should let you know that it’s only open to family.

In early July we hosted my sister in-law and her fiancé.

They enjoyed a two-week stay that involved trips to all the local boutique shops, and a day in Coombs where they saw the “goats on the roof.” (Google it, it’s a pretty cool place.) The highlight of their stay would be when we took them for a tour of Vancouver. First stop after a quick ferry ride was the Vancouver Aquarium. We all had a blast! We saw jellyfish, a billion species of other fish, octopus (or octopi?), seals and well, you get the idea.

If you get a chance to visit, try the fish and chips for lunch, it’s really fresh (wink, wink).

We also had the chance to check something off on my wife’s bucket list – we got to watch a CFL game between the BC Lions and Winnipeg Blue Bombers at BC Place. You see, she was born

in BC but moved to Manitoba at a young age. She and her father would enjoy the rivalry every summer, but they never did get a chance to attend a game on BC’s home turf. It was pretty special and we got to witness a fantastic game – sorry Bomber fans, but the Lions won that game.

The Manitoba theme continued into August when we hosted the “Burgos Cousin Reunion.” First to arrive was my mom (who never seems to age by the way), along with my sister Bernadette and nieces Kiana and Tyra (who seem to be growing See DALE p7

Easing into the backto-school routine The cooler weather and earlier sunsets in September are a cue that we will soon be transitioning into the back-to-school routine.

It can be a tough transition for some kids as the summer is likely a time of more play, time with family and friends, and later bed times.

To make it easier for yourself and your kids to get back into the routine, here are some tips to keep in mind one or two weeks before school starts: • Ease into the sleep routine Don’t wait until the night before the first big day to go to sleep at an early hour. This will probably not go well the next morning! For children, starting a minimum of one week before will get them into the habit of going to bed and waking up early. The new Canadian 24-Hour Movement Guidelines for Children and Youth recommend uninterrupted nine to

11 hours of sleep per night for those aged five to 13 years of age and eight to 10 hours of sleep per night for those aged 14 to 17 years of age. For adults, the Canadian Sleep Society recommends seven to eight hours per night.

The benefits of good sleep are that it boosts learning, increases attention span, and contributes to growth. There’s also evidence that an adequate amount of rest can help maintain healthy weight, defend against germs and illness, and reduce the risk of injury.

• Celebrate the end of summer and beginning of fall Often, celebrations can be a memorable way to transition from one thing to the next. Family and friends can get together for a special dinner, potluck, or picnic to mark the beginning of fall. It is a great opportunity to review the events of the summer, which can include looking at pictures and

On this side, the forecast called for clear skies, but was soon disappointed as we entered into thick fog at Long Beach. It’s here where you find surfers and swimmers alike. Once again, I felt like I needed to apologize to my prairie guests because the views were overshadowed by Mother Nature. They didn’t seem to mind as they still frolicked in the waves of the cold Pacific Ocean. I jumped in for a bit, but wow, was it chilly!

The Burgos Hotel has now closed for the season. We’ve managed to get a few hundred more photos that will need to be put into an album. We had a lot of fun and a ton of laughs – which is good because I’ve just reminded the kids that school will be starting very soon! The laughs have now turned to tears, mostly coming from me. I am not looking forward to another year of waking up cranky kids, a bunch of parentteacher interviews and figuring out what to make for lunches.

Day three was something I hope they will never forget. They got to climb trees! Not far outside Nanaimo is Wildplay Park. It’s a treetop adventure that includes zip lines and other obstacles. Muscles were tested, but the laughs numbed the pain. – another one to try if you ever get the chance.

Sadly the majestic mountains never appeared during the reunion as the smokey haze from all the BC fires filled the normally blue skies. No one seemed to mind though.

After the cousins left, my mom, sister and nieces stayed behind for a couple days. I needed to show these Manitobans a bit more of what the Island had to offer. We took a short road trip to the west coast, where we made a stop in Ucluelet and Tofino.

The first week of school can be overwhelming and tiring for kids, especially when they are very young. Some things to keep in mind are: • Change is hard for everyone As adults, we have learned over the years that we can get through change. But for kids, most experiences are still new. Be patient and talk with them openly about how they are feeling. If they are nervous, scared or sad, don’t tell them that they shouldn’t feel this way. Let them know that these feelings are normal, but they will get through it. For

example, you might say, “I know how you feel, I’ve been there.

But I’ve learned that I can always figure it out, and so will you.”

• A few days before, get organized Make sure to organize backpacks, school supplies and gym clothes ahead of time. It also helps to go through their dressers and closets and put away summer clothes (i.e. shorts, swimsuits) and get out the fall clothing.

Having their back to school outfit ready to go will leave them feeling prepared.

• On the first day of school, be early This allows kids to get used to their environment at a slower pace. If things are frantic and rushed, they will wind up feeling nervous or overwhelmed.

• Be loving and firm with goodbyes It is not helpful to sneak away when they aren’t looking because this suggests that they cannot trust you. Lots of hugs and kisses are fine, but make sure you say a firm goodbye and leave. This communicates that they are in a safe place.

• After school, be sure to talk about how things went Gently emphasize that the same routine will happen again for all school days. A great way to encourage communication as a family is to talk at the dinner table, without TV, electronics, or toys.

Every school year parents and students dutifully trudge through the malls in search of the perfect sneaker or the cool new outfit for the coming school year. However, it’s unlikely that the new shoe or shirt will benefit them as much as a new design in the bedroom.

That’s because a bedroom makeover will create new interest and energy – what feng shui calls “chi” – in the bedroom that will benefit a child.

According to feng shui, the Chinese technique for design and arrangement, rooms that have good energy, or “chi”, create happier, well-adjusted children.

Feng shui theories suggest that for a child’s room to have good “chi,” the room must follow certain guidelines such as that they must be restful, promote good relationships with others and generate good selfesteem. Perhaps most important, harmonious children’s bedrooms encourage good study habits and promote greater success in school.

What does it take to promote greater success in school?

According to feng shui, the following tips are key to creating rooms that inspire kids to study.

1. The room must have a desk.

It sounds obvious, but many kids’ only workspace is a bed, the bedroom floor, or the family dining table. Every child needs a suitable study area in the bedroom that includes a desk, chair, and a lamp. Children with study areas are more likely to study. Better still; having a study area keeps

all the schoolbooks and papers confined to the child’s room.

Feng shui also believes it’s best for children to study facing the northeast, the direction of wisdom and learning.

2. Ground your kids.

Buy your kids a globe to promote interest in geography and to help “ground” them and encourage them to study. Add a globe in the Northeast corner of the bedroom, if possible.

3. Create an achievement corner.

Every child needs to have recognition for a job well done.

A perfect way to gain this is to create an achievement corner on the South wall of the bedroom.

According to feng shui, this is the recognition area and is a good place to pin up awards, papers with good grades, letters of recommendation, ribbons or trophies.

4. Hang a crystal in the Northeast corner of the room.

Crystals are used to make computer chips faster. Hang a crystal in the study location to create more “study” chi and to help sharpen the child’s ability to “process” or think!

5. Put your child in the command position.

Avoid having children face a wall when studying because this represents an obstacle. They should be able to see the door when someone enters.

6. Display maps and other educational artwork.

Maps are another way to ground educational pursuits. They

Back to school feng shui – Encourage good study habits and promote greater success in school encourage “worldly” interest and curiosity and they make suitable images for a child’s room. Avoid scary creatures, pictures depicting violence, or sad or dark subjects.

7. Eliminate TV from the bedroom.

Sadly many of today’s children have TVs in their bedrooms. This is a feng shui no-no because it can make children much less likely to study and rest fully. If your child doesn’t study as much as you would like and has a TV in the bedroom, ask yourself what is more important: television or adequate rest and education?

8. Shells and fish are symbols of education.

Conch shells and koi or goldfish are excellent symbols of educational success. Place the conch shell in the Northeast corner of the bedroom. Or, hang a picture of koi or goldfish in the Northeast corner. It is not recommended to keep live fish in the bedroom, as water in the bedroom is associated with loss.

9. Make a space for books and school materials.

When kids come home from school they should have a place to put their backpacks and books.

There should also be a place for them to hang coats and hats and take off shoes. If your kids put their books on the stairs this is especially important because anyone using the stairs will be stepping over the books. This

symbolically puts education “under your feet.” Make sure books are not put on the stairs but have a regular “home” when the kids come in the door.

10. Activate the wisdom direction.

The Northeast sector should be activated appropriately with a globe, a lamp, and/or a quartz crystal or geode. Other objects would include anything made of porcelain or earth, such as a vase. A rock collection is another excellent way to energize this sector.

11. Careful about what you place under the stairs.

If you have stairs in your home, you will want to make sure there is nothing there that can be harmful to your family.

In particular, water located under stairs poses a threat to children in the home — and to their education. If the space under your stairs is open, try to close it up.

If you can’t, then place a heavy object such as a statue here. If

there is a closet located here, make sure it is filled with family possessions, such as holiday decorations, suitcases, or other household items. Avoid placing books in here, however, as this can cause studies to falter.

FENG SHUI Q&A Question: I live in an old house that is falling down us (literally). The bathroom is in the southeast wealth corner. The floor is shot and sinking. Moving is not an option. Every room needs major work, what can I do to improve my house and life?

Answer: I’ve lived in homes that had holes in the floors, walls or ceilings. But we bought them that way with the intent to repair them in the days before it was called flipping. However, it takes time to renovate, and you usually only do it as your budget allows.

Karla Atanacio was awarded the ANAK Liwayway Scholarship for Leadership Excellence last June based on her high school GPA, a group interview, and an essay based on an oral history interview she conducted.

The following essay was her submission.

Immigrating to Canada is a challenging process that many Filipinos get to experience every year (StatsCanada). With the hard work and persistence of my parents, I am lucky enough to call myself a Filipino-Canadian today.

Like with many immigrants, the promise of a better life in Canada appealed very much to them. “I thought if we moved to Canada, we could have anything we want: a house, a car, a good education for you guys,” my mom said.

I remember my mom reviewing her notes from her IELTS class at three in the morning. Four hours later, she would go to her full-time job until nine in the evening. I also remember the disappointment in her voice when she called my dad to break the news that our application to move to Canada was rejected for the third time.

I remember asking why she and my dad would go through all that trouble. Her only response would always be: “Because I want you to have a better life” (Atanacio).

As a kid, I never quite understood what that statement meant.

However, as I grew older, I slowly came to realize the significance of their actions.

“I want you to have what me and your dad didn’t have when

What pushed and pulled my family here we were growing up,” my mom explained to me. Neither of my parents pursued a post-secondary education. My mom started working at sixteen. “‘Di na namin napag-aral ang mommy mo kasi mahirap lang kami noon,” says my lola (De Guzman). She said that my mom excelled in high school but never attended college because of their financial situation. My dad had a few jobs he was younger but worked as a welder in Japan and Dubai for eight years. I didn’t get to see them often. On the bright side , they sent us to private schools.

Their efforts also put us where we are today – Canada.

Our transition to Winnipeg did not go as smoothly as we thought it would. We had to start from scratch. My dad had

to work two jobs to support our family. My mom struggled to find a job during our first few months. In the end, things worked out for the best. Today, my mom is an accomplished manager at a winter clothing company. My dad is working as a welder at a steel company. We purchased our first car in December 2015 and bought a house the summer after that. As for me, I will be the first in my family to attend university. It is an exciting and humbling feeling.

As I look back on my family’s journey to Canada, I can’t help but express gratitude to my parents.

They traveled halfway across the globe to seek a better future in a foreign place, and they succeeded.

Because of them, I have access to world-class education, a job where I can thrive, and a place

that I can call my second home.

My mom wished to see snow, but she got so much more.

“We should seriously consider making this an annual event,” said Vaibhav Banthia, India Chapter chair.

Indeed, this was a day of Saturday, August 19th was bursting with multicultural vibes and colour as the four ethnicbased chapters of Engineers Geoscientists Manitoba hosted a free event for its members, their families and friends at St. Vital Park, coined the “IPAC Summer Picnic”. IPAC is formed from the first letter of these chapters – India, Philippines (Filipino), Arab Nations and Chinese.

The chapter chairs, Vaibhav Banthia of India, Mohamed Matar of the Arab, Wing-Keat Wong of the Chinese and yours truly for the Filipino chapter, collaborated and organized the event through a couple of meetings, phone calls and numerous e-mails. Over 100 participants attended and were entertained by food, networking

cultural learning, appreciation and respect for everyone at the event who calls Manitoba home.

Back-to-school guide 2017 Hello, everyone! I am happy and thankful to be back to writing for my column for its fourth year.

This year, I have chosen to go half time (to pursue more community endeavours) and at a younger grade (Grade 4). These new experiences will surely shape the direction of the column as well, as this will be the lens that I’m writing through.

September is here, and with it comes the return to school. One thing that I want to emphasize is the importance of practicing patience. As kids come back to school, think of it as the transition of coming back to a full workday after a vacation. It takes some time to transition, and even more so for kids!

Allow your child to have that time to settle into routines both at school and at home. The transition between two months of (generally) not having a set routine or schedule and then to suddenly having expectations and routines is not an easy feat. Believe me, this also applies to teachers! Have the patience to also celebrate their successes in transition back to good habits, not just reprimanding only the negative.

Instead of, “Why aren’t you

doing your homework yet?” say instead, “I’m glad you’re adjusting well with _____.”

This could be about getting to bed a little earlier, or befriending new classmates, or signing up for clubs at school. Back-to-school is a positive experience if we make it out to be.

Parent Tip: #Goals Anyone on social media uses the hashtag “goals” towards ideas, concepts, or images of a lifestyle that they wish to achieve. Let’s get

back to the real meaning of goal setting. One way for students to feel success is to be able to achieve small goals in succession. Set long term goals with your child(ren), but also set “doable” and “right now” goals.

Long term: “I want to get an average of _____ for the first term.”

Short term: “I want to get to school on time every day.”

Solenn Heussaff and Betong Sumaya host GMA’s All-Star Videoke GMA Network brings back to All-Star Videoke this September.

The musical game show is hosted by the two of the Network’s versatile artists: actress and TV host Solenn Heussaff and comedian Betong Sumaya.

Solenn revealed that because of her love for music and singing, she is very excited about this new assignment.

“Ito talaga yung first hosting gig ko sa GMA Entertainment so iba yung feeling kasi sobrang bongga yung preparations sa lahat. Nandun yung pressure but the excitement is there for me kasi I really like music and singing so dito magagawa ko talaga yun,” the Kapuso actress said.

On the other hand, Betong shared how grateful he is to finally be part of the program that has become one of the Filipino viewers’ favourite TV programs.

“Natutuwa ako kasi kami ni Solenn yung pinagkatiwalaan ng GMA dito sa napakalaking project na ito. As we all know, inaabangan talaga ito ng viewers noon, di ba?

Hindi maintindihan ng mga tagahanga nina James Reid at Nadine Lustre ang desisyon ng Viva Entertainment na itambal muna sila sa iba. May ginagawa nang proyekto ngayon si James na hindi si Nadine ang kaniyang katambal.

Ang dalaga naman ay malapit na ring magsimulang gawin ang isang pelikula na hindi rin si James ang kaniyang kasama, pero maganda raw ang proyekto,

hahangaan daw ang young actress sa kuwento ng pelikula.

Kung sino ang nagplanong paghiwalayin muna ang loveteam ay gustong malaman ng mga JaDine fans. Maling-mali raw ang desisyon, gusto na raw sigurong buwagin talaga ang loveteam, samantalang napakabenta nila sa publiko.

Pero mas may alam ang nagdesisyon, malaki ang ipinuhunan ng kanilang management agency para marating nila ang popularidad na hawak nila ngayon. Alam ng mga ito ang kanilang ginagawa at kung ano ang magiging resulta ng paghihiwalay muna kina James at Nadine.

Nakarating naman sa amin ang impormasyon na matagal na palang nagli-live-in sina James at Nadine. Iyon ang dahilan kung bakit pinupog sa social media ang dalagang aktres, sinabi niya kasi na walang masama sa paglilive-in, lalo na ngayong panahon na ng milenyal.

Maraming nanghihinayang sa kanilang tambalan dahil mukhang napag-iiwanan na sila ngayon ng kanilang mga kasabayang LizQuen at KathNiel.

Komento ng mga sumusubaybay sa kanilang career ay maaga silang nagpadala sa kanilang emosyon. Sa halip na career daw ang bigyan nila ng tutok at panahon ay inuna muna nila ang kanilang relasyon.

Pero ganoon talaga ang mga taong nagmamahalan, walang pinakikinggang payo, dahil mas malakas ang dikta ng kanilang

Sana’y palawakin ng ibang tao ang kanilang isip sa nararamdamang kaligayahan ngayon ni Lotlot dahil nakilala na niya ang babaeng nagdala nang siyam na buwan sa kaniya sa sinapupunan.

Filipino Fiesta in Downtown Winnipeg The Manitoba Filipino Street Festival 2017

by Judianne Jayme On August 26th, 2017, downtown Winnipeg became the site once again for the annual Manitoba Filipino Street Festival.

This year’s theme was Filipino Fiestas. The festivities began at 9:00 a.m. with the official parade down Memorial Boulevard, Donald Street, and Broadway Avenue and featured 56 different organizations! Parade participants brought their banners, theme attire, and high spirits as they made their way back to the Legislative Building grounds.

The morning’s master of ceremonies, Roldan Sevillano Jr., announced each organization making their way at the end of the parade and facilitated the morning’s festivities and programming.

A panel of six judges were on hand to select winners for the different categories.

The main stage was filled with incredible talents straight from our community, and even more dancing and demonstrations were happening in Memorial Park.

CKJS 810AM Pinoy Saturday Night hosts Maui Zamora and Ayen Dandan-Zamora hosted the evening portion. The night ended with the TFC Hour featuring TFC talent, actress and singer, Arci Munoz. She sang some powerful songs to get the crowd fired up and had a fun audience participation game with some lucky gentlemen!

APOMBAA celebrates Canada 150 APOMBAA families celebrated Canada’s 150th birthday with a picnic at Rushing River and camping in Blue Lake at Kenora, Ontario during the Canada Day long weekend.

“The trails, scenery, and walks by the shore in a bright moon in Blue Lake were an exciting and relaxing getaway. The roar of the rushing river and its stoic rock formation and majestic lake at Rushing river campsite was an exhilarating sight to feel and experience,” said APOMBAA’s Derrick Vergara.

“APOMBAA children and teens had a blast swimming at Blue Lakes’ invitingly cold lake water. Food was in abundance.

Usapang basura Inihambalos na ba ang iyong garbage cart?

May mga usap-usapan na marami daw ang nagrereklamo sa mga ginagawa ngayon ng ilang mga garbage collectors sa ating mga garbage carts. May napanood pa akong actual video na kung saan ipinaghampasan ng garbage collector ang garbage cart matapos itapon ang basura sa truck. Hindi isa o dalawa ang narinig kong nagrereklamo tungkol dito. At napatunayan ko ‘yan nang kami na ang naging biktima ng kalokohan ng mga taong ito. Akala namin ay nawala na ang aming cart dahil halos lumipad ito mula sa aming backlane patungo sa bakanteng lote na halos 50 metro ang layo sa amin. Hindi naman bumabagyo nang ganoong kalakas dito sa Winnipeg kaya imposible na tinangay ito ng malakas na hangin.

Totoo nga ba ang mga balibalita na matatapos na raw kasi ang kontrata ng kasalukuyang garbage collection company ng Winnipeg kaya’t medyo wala na sa ayos ang kanilang sistema? Sana naman ay hindi totoo na sinasadya nilang ipagbalibagan ang ating mga garbage carts dahil lamang sa matatapos na ang kanilang serbisyo sa atin. Kung totoo man ito, dapat ay managot ang

kasalukuyang garbage collection company sa anumang posibleng sira sa ating mga garbage carts.

Ayon sa City of Winnipeg, ang may-ari ng cart (tayo) ang mga may responsabilidad sa anumang damage ng ating cart maliban na lamang kung ang damage ay dahilan ng koleksyon or ng third party. Ang tanong ko, paano mo patutunayan na hindi ikaw ang nakasira sa cart mo? Narito po ang excerpt ng policy tungkol sa damaged garbage carts: What happens if my garbage cart is damaged?

Kinuhanan ko ng picture ang basura na chicken joy bucket sa damuhan ng Garbage Hill sa St James. Ang Garbage Hill po ay hindi tambakan ng basura.

Ito ay isang park. Dito tayo nagsasaranggola, dito nagtatagpo ang mga magkakaibigan at pamilya para sumagap ng sariwang hangin at magsamasama. Maganda ang view mula sa hill. Sana naman ay huwag itong babuyin.

Taun-taon ay may kasiyahan at fireworks sa Tyndall Park sa pagdiriwang ng Canada Day. At dahil ang bahay ko ay halos dalawang bloke lamang dito ay saksi ako ang mga naiiwang basura tuwing July 2nd. Matapos ang Zumba, kainan, sayawan at kasiyahan ay naiiwan ang sandamakmak na basura sa open field na park, sa harap at likod ng Tyndall Park School at sa palibot ng community centre.

Paalala ko lang po sa kagalang-galang na mga organizers at participants ng Canada Day sa Tyndall, sana po ay maging responsable naman po kayo sa mga basurang iiwan ninyo! Ang napeperwisyo kasi ay ang mga tao na nakatira malapit dito at ang mismong park, community centre at paaralan.

Sa September 2nd and 3rd ay may event na naman sa Tyndall.

Walang masama sa mga activities ng ating mga kababayan, pero sana ay siguraduhin ng mga aattend at ng mga organizers na ayusin at linisin ang paligid bago nila iwanan. Kaunting respeto naman po sa kalikasan. Pulutin ang basura at itapon sa tamang tapunan.

Alpha Phi Omega Manitoba’s annual Father’s Day Fishing Derby APOMBAA hosted its annual Father’s Day Fishing derby last June 17, 2017 in Selkirk Park. Now in its fourth year, organizers noted a significant growth in the number of participants and an increase in private and corporate sponsorship. A total of $1,200 in cash and prizes was awarded to winners.

The competition’s target was to catch Silver Bass, document its length, and release it.

Cash prizes and gift certificates were handed for the lengthiest (longest), smallest, fastest catch, most number of catches, and the last catch.

The fastest catch was caught in five minutes. The lengthiest catch caught was 24.5 cm.

For Ian’s silver beauty, he was awarded $400.

The shortest silver bass was measured at 12.5 cm. Julius Yusi caught it early during the competition. His catch gave him $150 reasons to smile.

The 15 “hawkeyed” derby Marshalls were on their toes up to the last few minutes of the competition to determine the winner of the “last catch.”

APOMBAA and derby organizers would like to thank all the sponsors.

Fishing derby chairman Allanis Javier and APOMBAA president Melody Ronquillo would also like to thank all the participants, volunteers, and corporate sponsors; the APOMBAA members, friends and families; APO Saskatchewan for making this year’s derby a memorable Father’s day weekend celebration.
