Gender X now an option on Canadian passports Canadians now have the option to identify their gender on government documents as something other than “F” for female or “M” for male. Immigration minister, Ahmed Hussen, announced on August 24 that the Government of Canada is implementing an “X” gender designation in Canadian passports, as well as other documents issued by Immigration, Refugees and Citizenship Canada (IRCC). An “X” will make it easier for people who do not identify as female or male to acquire passports and other government-issued documents that better reflect their gender identity. “All Canadians should feel safe to be themselves, live according to their gender identity and express their gender as they choose.
