care services in the city. The changes, which were announced in April 2017, closely follow the recommendations of a report commissioned in 2015 by the

by Susie Strachan On any given Tuesday or Thursday at 8:30 a.m., you’ll find the Active Living Seven Oaks (ALSO) class moving to the music in the basement of St. Francis Anglican Church on Burrin Avenue.

Led by Cory Juan, the group of older adults work their way through a warm-up, proceed into 25 minutes of cardiovascular exercises followed by weight and balance training, do some exercises to promote flexibility, and then head into a cool-down period at the end of the hour.

On hazing The closest I got to an initiation was in high school when the officers of our citizens’ military training made us go through a series of activities aimed at testing our obedience and trust. It was done late at night in our school, and we were blindfolded the whole time. We were made to stay alone in a room for what felt like hours where the officers played mind tricks on us like playing haunting organ music from a distance, and run in an open field blindfolded – again, scary because of the fear of tripping or hitting something. At one point they dropped “acid” on our backs to “brand” us, although it turned out to be just melted candle wax.

For the finale we were brought up to the rooftop where we were told to jump from a ledge. Our officers asked us if we were willing to obey until death, but as I sat on that ledge I knew they wouldn’t actually kill us. However, I was scared of how high I would have to fall before a net or cushion or something, anything, caught me.

As it turned out, the fall was just a few inches and I landed on my feet on the concrete. We all had a good laugh after that – we the

newcomers and our officers.

Of course that was nothing but child’s play, but it did bring our batch a little closer to each other. Experiencing something like that together creates a bond, and that is one of the points of initiation. Fraternities make recruits go through an initiation ritual to make them part of the brotherhood, emphasizing to them that even their elders went through the same thing, which, to me, raises the question: who initiated the founders?

Unfortunately, these days the words “initiation” and “hazing” are interchangeable.

While initiation is “a rite of passage marking entrance or acceptance into a group or society,” hazing is “the practice of rituals, challenges, and other activities involving harassment, abuse, or humiliation used as a way of initiating a person into a group.”

In the Philippines, Republic Act 8049 or the Anti-Hazing Law has been in force since 1995, but this has been largely ignored as evidenced by the deaths and injuries that still occur. Perhaps this is because, according to ndvlaw.com, hazing per se is “not

prohibited, but merely regulated.”

What is absolutely prohibited, it continues, is “the employment of physical violence in hazing.”

“This is in view of the fact that hazing is broadly defined

by RA 8049 as ‘an initiation rite or practice as a prerequisite for admission into membership in a fraternity, sorority or organization by placing the recruit, neophyte or applicant in some embarrassing or humiliating situations such as forcing him to do menial, silly, foolish and other similar tasks or activities or otherwise subjecting him to physical or psychological suffering or injury.’” In other words, initiation and hazing are one and the same under Philippine law.

Under RA 8049, hazing/ initiation is valid if the following conditions are complied with: 1. Prior written notice to the school authorities or head of organization seven days before the conduct of such initiation 2. The written notice shall indicate the period of the initiation activities which shall not exceed three days, shall include the names of those to be subjected to such activities.

3. The written notice shall contain an undertaking that no physical violence be employed by anybody during such initiation rites.

4. At least two representatives of the school or organization should be present during the initiation. It is the duty of such representative to see to it that no physical harm of any kind shall be inflicted upon a recruit, neophyte or applicant.

There is nothing inherently wrong with initiation. As I said, it creates a bond among the newcomers, both with each other and with their elders, and these bonds often last a lifetime. That can be both good and bad, as we are seeing in the most recent case of the death of 22-year-old University of Sto. Tomas law student Horacio Tomas Castillo III in which older members are apparently still debating on who to help – the victim or his killers.

How does one solve the matter? Stronger enforcement of the law is required, but in the end we ourselves have to break this perverted notion that hurting other people is going to make them loyal to us and to our organizations.

Education counters misinformation Misinformation in the 21st century is one of the major challenges facing first world countries. We are becoming more aware of the way in which Russia impacted the 2016 United States presidential election, the Brexit vote in the United Kingdom, and the failed steps to influence the French elections. Misinformation – not the “fake news” that Donald Trump complains about – must be addressed.

Misinformation about the Canadian asylum system is not different. There is a great deal of information about the Canadian refugee determination process that is based on misconceptions and falsehoods. The best way to counteract the spread of false stories is through education and, yes, Mr. Trump, through an engaged, informed press, that provides the public with accurate news, even if you don’t want them to know the truth.

Since the rise to power of Donald Trump, Canada has seen record numbers of asylum seekers streaming north into Canada from the United States. The government has taken positive steps to counteract this movement of people through education and not

the building of a wall. The federal immigration web site announced only last week that Ahmed Hussen, Minister of Immigration, Refugee and Citizenship Canada, has been holding round table meetings with key stakeholder groups that work with immigrant communities in New York City.

They discussed the situation regarding asylum seekers at the Canada-United States border.

Some of the immigrant serving agencies the minister met with included the Immigration Protection Unit of the New York Legal Assistance Group, as well as the Catholic Charities New York. The roundtable meetings are a way to counter misinformation with facts and promote a better understanding of the refugee claim system in Canada and the risks associated with irregular border crossings.

Minister Hussen stressed that, while Canada is a welcoming society, entry into Canada must be done through existing ports of entry. The government of Canada discourages people from entering the country illegally.

These entries are not only illegal but also dangerous. We have only to remember the refugee

claimants who entered last winter, became disoriented by the cold, and ended up losing fingers to frost bite. The Minister correctly pointed out that claiming refugee status as a Convention Refugee or Protected Person inside Canada does not guarantee success. There are no guarantees that all asylum seekers will be allowed to remain in Canada.

“Today, I was able to meet with several key members of organizations serving the immigrant community in New York,” Minister Hussen said.

“These meetings are a part of our outreach efforts in the United States. We are working closely with our embassy and consulate in the U.S. and other stakeholders to ensure that all people thinking about making an asylum claim in Canada, regardless of their current status in the United States, understand Canada’s laws and the risks of entering Canada outside of ports of entry.”

A quick summary of facts for readers and potential claimants: • There is no special program to grant refugee status to individuals in the United States currently under Protected Person status or otherwise;

• Claiming asylum is not a “free ticket into Canada”; holding a temporary protection status in the United States does not entitle people to the same status in Canada; and • If you do not enter Canada through a port of entry, you will be breaking the law.

Canada continues to accept claimants and to honour our international humanitarian commitments, but we are also a country of laws. The government does understand that education and working partnerships with stakeholders in both our country and the United States is a positive way to address the issues.

No, Mr. Trump, Canada is not intent on building walls. We have been successful as a nation in building bridges.

The report identified excessive wait times, high numbers of patient transfers between hospitals and limited physician and diagnostic resources spread across too many sites. It called for improved patient care through regional consolidation of health services to better leverage clinical expertise, diagnostic resources and staffing.

“Winnipeggers have been forced to endure some of the longest emergency wait times in Canada…The current system has long been in need of changes to make it more effective and efficient,” said Kelvin Goertzen, Minister of Health, Seniors and Active Living.

However, many Manitobans, especially healthcare workers, are concerned about how the changes will be accomplished in light of the government’s current underfunding of health care. Healthcare funding was not increased in 2017, despite the forecasted rise of $105 million in health expenditures this year.

As a result, the WRHA has been reducing and shutting down various programs and laying off workers to make up for a $78 million budget shortfall.

PILIPINO EXPRESS For example a program to help women avoid expensive hysterectomies was downsized and outpatient physical therapy for joint-replacement patients was eliminated.

Adding to the general apprehension about the changes, the government has not yet made public recent audits of the healthcare system, conducted by the accounting firm KPMG, despite a pledge by Premier Brian Pallister to do so, and the premier has recently raised the idea of imposing a health tax.

Dr. David Peachey, the government’s health consultant, dismissed opposition to the changes saying in a recent interview, “It was expected.”

The overall plan creates separate roles for each of the region’s six hospitals. Winnipeg will have three acute-care emergency departments – Health Sciences Centre, St. Boniface Hospital and Grace Hospital – while two urgent care centres – Victoria Hospital and Seven Oaks Hospital – will provide 24/7 care for non-life threatening health concerns requiring sameday treatment.

Specific changes in Phase I, slated to begin October 3, include: • the conversion of Victoria Hospital’s emergency department to an urgent care centre; • the closure of urgent care at Misericordia Health Centre; • changes to accommodate higher volumes of patients at St. Boniface, Grace and Health

Sciences Centre emergency departments, including eight new treatment spaces at St. Boniface; • opening of clinical assessment units at St. Boniface and Grace hospitals and the expansion of the existing clinical assessment unit at HSC; • redeployment of lab and diagnostic services – grouping patients according to the care they require; • opening of 65 new transitional care beds for stable patients who require time to make long-term arrangements for their care; • creation of 28 transitional care beds at Victoria Hospital for clients requiring enhanced supports; • intensive home care for up to 90 days to reduce the length of hospital stays; • updated ambulance protocols to ensure paramedics are fully informed of the appropriate destination hospital, depending on the care required; • ongoing conversations with union leadership regarding plans that match patient populations with the correct staffing mix and the specialized diagnostic resources needed to treat them.

In addition to the changes slated to begin October 3, other changes over the next six weeks, include: • the shift of mature women’s services from Victoria Hospital to Health Sciences Centre; • the addition of critical care beds at Grace Hospital; • the movement of geriatric-

rehab patients from St. Boniface Hospital to Victoria Hospital and; • the opening of a special needs behavioural unit at Deer Lodge Centre.

Phase II changes to healthcare in Manitoba will begin in spring 2018.

Giving back and paying it forward We have been taught to be always grateful for all the things that life throws our way.

Everything happens for a reason, right? We have to be thankful not just for the abundant blessings but also for the different challenges that shape our lives.

One of the things that I am really thankful for is good health.

If you are healthy, there are so many things you can do and enjoy. So we should not be taking the health of our body and mind for granted. Health is wealth, so they say. If you are healthy, then good for you! Other people are not so lucky, like the thousands of children being helped by the Children’s Hospital Foundation of Manitoba.

Established in 1971, the Children’s Hospital Foundation works to support the special healthcare needs of children through reliable and consistent funding for pediatric medical research, as well as equipment and programs at the Children’s Hospital of Winnipeg.

So it was a no-brainer that ZIN™ Rhiz Aco, Rey-ar Reyes and I, chose them as the beneficiary for our very first Zumba®Yanihan event held on September 9, 2017. With the support of our loving families, friends and sponsors, we were able to donate $2,000 to the CHFM. “Thank you for your wonderful and hard work!” said Courtney Leiman, the Annual/ Mid-Level Giving Officer for the CHFM. “I’m so pleased we are able to buy the needed bedside table for the children in the hospital.”

Lovers in a dangerous time Most days, I look at the world through rose coloured glasses, which means I am usually an optimistic and cheerful person.

I’ve been given the nickname of Smiley, which goes back to my teen years. This isn’t a shock for those who know me. Apparently, I am always smiling (but not when I’m sleeping – that would just be creepy).

My writing style is upbeat with a mix of sarcasm. For the most part, it’s harmless and I never like to take sides. But man! It’s hard to be sitting on the sidelines watching what is going on around the world right now.

Why can’t we all just get along?

We’ve got world leaders calling each other names in one of the biggest stages in the world – a stage that symbolizes hope, prosperity and peace. It is a stage I so badly wanted to work on since I started in the communications industry. Heck, one of their logos uses a white dove; an animal that represents peace and love.

I’m referring to a certain president’s manner of speech while speaking to the United Nations assembly. He essentially called out a schoolyard bully in front the world. And what sort of response did Mr. President think would follow? Was he hoping for a “sorry” or “my bad?” Sadly, it seemed to have only angered Mr.

UN more – and no, his last name isn’t short for United Nations. I am scared to think what is coming next!

Elsewhere, there are still wars raging on with many perishing every single day. Or what about these rallies popping up all over the States with some here in Canada? What has the world come to? (I’ve purposely left out names of political leaders and the meaning behind these rallies, as I do not want to give it any more attention.)

Just when I think there is no hope left in this world, I am uplifted by the generosity of my fellow human beings – hurricane Harvey being a perfect example. Houston was hit hard.

An estimated 270,000 homes were flooded in the region. One of America’s biggest cities was brought to its knees; yet, the people of Houston stood up and said, “Uh-uh Mother Nature, you aren’t dampening our spirit!”

I watched videos of people lining up on highways with their boats in tow driving toward the flood. These very people used their boats to save people stranded in their flooded homes. I read an article about one woman who was down on her luck and was in desperate need of a generator. A gentleman, unknown to her, gave her his generator. Stories like this

These images will stay with me forever.

So here I am, living in one of most beautiful countries on the planet. I’ve got a fabulous wife I love with all my heart (aw gush), who puts up with my childlike charisma, and great kids who don’t seem to mind the never ending dad jokes. What’s a dad

joke you ask? This is my best one that never fails to crack me up: Me: “Kids, what do they call Chinese food in China?”

Kids: Said in very deep sighs, “I don’t know dad, what?”

Me: “Food!”

ROTFLOL. Gets me every time.

Right now, the sun is shining.

I think I’m going to slip on my

rose coloured glasses and figure out what to make for dinner. Or maybe I’ll take the family out!

If you see me, I’ll be the one with the big smile on my face, especially if we’re eating Chinese food.

STEPPIN’...

From page 1 aimed at getting older adults to be physically active in order to maintain physical strength, flexibility, balance and to encourage social interaction.

As the group winds down at the end of the hour, one of the women makes a joke about how, sooner or later, everyone in Juan’s condo will become a member of Active Living Seven Oaks.

Juan laughs at that. She’s a natural leader, very much interested in keeping people active and moving. She’s a member of the Wellness Institute, and loves spreading the word about physical activity and mental health.

“Belonging to the Wellness Institute is great for me, but I found that some people can’t travel there on a regular basis, and there’s the matter of the cost of the membership for some,” says Juan.

When she heard about the Steppin’ Up program, which is run by peer leaders in the community and is offered for free, she knew she wanted to run a group.

“I used to power walk at Garden City Mall, and one day, I found myself on the second floor, talking to promotions manager Erica Bracic about whether I could borrow a space to hold the classes in,” she says. “She said yes, and we ran the group there until June, when they had renovations, and we moved here (to the church).”

ALSO member Amy Eisner says she used to go to aquasize classes a long time ago, but felt an immediate connection to the group. “Since I’ve retired, and am travelling more, I come to the group when I’m here. I’ve also learned a lot of exercises I can do at home and while travelling.”

Joyce Young echoed that sentiment. “I first saw the group at the mall, when I was mall walking, and wondered what they were doing,” she says. “Cory talked to me and encouraged me to join, and I’ve been exercising with ALSO ever since.”

PILIPINO EXPRESS Steppin’ Up With Confidence is run by the Active Living Coalition for Older Adults in Manitoba (ALCOA-MB). About 120 people have taken the program training and are leading exercise groups in Winnipeg, according to Jim Evanchuk, the Executive Director of ALCOAMB. “This type of programming is very successful in getting older adults to incorporate physical activity into their routines, which results in better health both physically and mentally,” he says.

Every leader takes a two-day workshop at the Wellness Institute at Seven Oaks Hospital or another location. The training covers how to lead safe, age-friendly and enjoyable exercise classes in the community.

“It incorporates a warmup, cardio exercises, strength and balance training, flexibility and then a cool-down,” says Evanchuk. “The program is designed to be offered for free, and to use minimal, low-cost items like small hand weights and dyna-bands for resistance.”

Once the leaders are trained, they are paired with a mentor; someone who has been leading the exercise program for a while.

The mentors offer support and answer questions, and give ideas on how to run a class. The program also helps leaders recruit class participants and secure a location to hold their classes in.

“Classes are held in seniors’ residences and 55-Plus Active Living centres, in local community clubs, in church basements, in shopping malls,” says Evanchuk, adding that along with the over 100 active leaders in Winnipeg, there are 50 in rural Manitoba.

The exercises can be modified to suit each person’s ability. Each exercise is described in a manual, which includes how to keep the exercises age-appropriate and how to safely adapt them if a participant wants to step things up.

Sylvia Bonds is another

Steppin’ Up peer leader. She leads a class at 10:30 a.m. on Tuesdays, also at St. Francis Anglican Church. After participating in Steppin’ Up classes at St. Francis off and on for several years, Bonds took the leadership course.

Following a period of mentorship, she started to lead the class in September 2015.

“This keeps me moving,” she says, adding she has personal motivation to keep the class going. “I couldn’t get myself to

exercise like this at home. By teaching the class, I definitely get the exercise. My body loves that.”

Bonds runs a similar program to the one led by Juan, with a group of people who prefer a mid-morning time. She mentions that there’s another Steppin’ Up program at the nearby Gwen Sector Creative Living Centre on Fridays.

“There are plenty of options available in Winnipeg for someone looking for a free exercise

program in their neighbourhood,” she says. “The goal of the program is to get older adults moving and exercising. That has all sorts of health benefits. And people get to meet new people, talk to them and enjoy the company while they’re getting exercise.”

The continuing struggle with work-life balance Have you ever wondered what it’s like to finish a full day of work and then rush to school or the daycare to pick up your children or come home to make dinner for your family? Or to have to use a personal day or annual leave just to take your children to appointments? Working full-time and being a parent can be a very challenging especially for those who have demanding careers. As a parent of two young children, I myself go through this challenge day in and day out.

Back in 2009, when I wrote an article about work-life balance, statistics showed that Canadians worked 1,750 hours per year, 300 hours more per year than the average French or German worker. Well guess what, currently Canada is number 4 in the worst 10 countries for parents’ worklife balance according to a study conducted by Expert Market.

The methodology used by Expert Market was to find out the best countries for parents’ worklife balance by using four data points in 37 countries to make a comparison with regards to the

average annual hours worked by parents; the standard number of annual leave entitlement in each country; total paid leave available to mothers and; total paid leave for fathers.

The study revealed that Finland and Estonia are the top two countries for parents’ work-life balance. While Finland secured the first place for the highest paid annual leave allowances, Estonia came in second with the best paid leave available to mothers which is 85 weeks at full-rate pay.

The country that scored the worst was United States for its failure to provide any statutory paid leave to parents. Under its Fair Labour Standards Act, it does not require employers to pay for any annual leave. As for Canada, the study indicated that it scored poorly for being the fourth worst place to have kids for the small amount of annual leave that Canadians are granted a year, which on average is typically no more than 10 business days.

According to the study, shorter annual leave and longer working hours eat into quality family

time. In another study, however

by SHRM, working long hours was reported more common among executives and middle management, non-management employees who tend to work late for career advancement and competition with co-workers, or pressures from higher-ups. For women especially mothers, this challenge is doubled because their role does not stop in the workplace.

Their role continues at home as a caregiver and a homemaker.

There are many ways to find a balanced work and personal life but only if you allot some time for it.

Despite of the continuing challenges of finding balance between work and family, Vancouver-based Parenting Coach Julie Romanowski says that there are ways to manage it. In an interview with Global News, she stated that a way to cope is by discussing with your partner what you want and need, then prioritize as soon as you have determined what those needs and wants are.

One way of coping is by

increasing the quality of activities as we can get a lot more out of them. Many activities seem to limit our ability to enjoy ourselves. For example, a lot of people get stuck with unproductive activities like watching television. They become couch potatoes because either they don’t want to exert any effort or invest in an activity, or they just don’t have any better leisure activities that they truly enjoy.

Another way is discovering leisure interests. Things that you could consider are booking some holidays and using that time to invest in doing something meaningful. Spend time with the family, meet new people or get involved in the community.

Someone who spends a lot of time at his or her desk may have a need for a physically demanding activity like working out at the gym. For someone who spends less time with their family, perhaps a family-friendly activity would be nice, such as going out to the movies or playing sports with the kids.

No matter how difficult it is to find family quality time outside of work, we still need to remind ourselves that our lives need balance. A recent survey

indicates that Canadians don’t live to work, but work to live.

Work is a valuable aspect of our lives, but one of the most valuable aspects of leisure is that it can help satisfy personal needs that can’t be satisfied through work.

Keeping ourselves surrounded by new energy helps keep our energy level high and looking forward in an expectantly positive outlook – and that draws more love, money, and happiness to us.

Figure out what makes you happy: If a bouncy new kitten makes you break out in a smile, why not go to your local shelter and adopt a new cat? It’s important that we make choices that make us happy. Sometimes the hard part is figuring out what that is that makes us happy. Make a list of ten things that make you happy – whether that’s hot chocolate in the morning or a cute figurine on your desk. If you see something you really love, and I mean really love, buy it. There is no better feng shui than being surrounded by things you really, truly love and enjoy.

Symbolize happiness: Once you know what happiness looks like to you, find a symbol for it.

Maybe that symbol is a word, a figurine (I just love lucky cats!), or something you have already. One

Another symbol of happiness is the lucky cat. The darling cats bring happiness energy to the cash registers of many Asian businesses – and money. I have a small collection of them myself.

Annual animals are also another harbinger of happiness. Each year, small figures of the animal of the year are made and sold in Asian gifts shops. Many of them are happy and smiling. Last year I bought a smiling rat and this year I have a happy ox! Find one that appeals to you and makes you happy.

FENG SHUI Q&A Question: My question is about aroma diffusers in the bedroom. Obviously, nice aromas are good feng shui, but do aroma diffusers represent the water element since it basically shoots out water vapour? I love my diffuser and it helps me breathe easier, but I don’t want bad feng shui while I sleep.

Answer: At first this seemed like a simple question but it is really a bit more complicated. In feng shui we’re always looking at balance. Some say “no water in the bedroom” but then some feng shui experts will question your glass of water by the bedside as being water. Technically it is… but it’s a small amount. Again, we’re back to the balance part.

A glass of water compared to a water fountain or listening to the pool outside your window run all night are very different.

The glass of water is so small; it is insignificant. The pool? Not so much. It’s “big water” so it represents a bigger problem.

Which brings us back to your diffuser. My answer is that it depends. Is it a small object or large? If it’s small like a glass of water, then, that doesn’t concern me as much, though having it steam away all night doesn’t seem like a good idea to me. Do you hear water bubbling in it? If not, then it’s not a problem. If yes, then, yes, that’s a concern. Do you see where I’m heading with this? My other question would be about turning it off while you sleep. Can you do that?

I know some of you reading this will wonder about vaporizers.

If you listen to these gurgling away all night every night, it’s not a good idea. If it’s just a shortterm use while you have a chest cold, that’s OK. But listening to water in any way while you sleep over the long term is never a good idea – no matter whether it’s a diffuser, vaporizer, dripping faucet, or swimming pool.

First, they were student members In 2014, the Filipino Members Chapter (FMC) of Engineers Geoscientists Manitoba established a bursary fund to support the chapter’s student members pursuing their qualification requirements to become engineering/geoscience interns, and eventually, professional engineers/ geoscientists. Since then, $4,500 has been disbursed to nine recipients. The positive ripple effect of the bursary award is evident through the success.

Five recipients who successfully completed their academic qualifications share words of advice to current student members and words of appreciation.

James Aquino, BS Mechanical Engineering, 2004 2016 bursary recipient – passed the Fundamentals of Engineering (FE) Exam and registered as an Engineering Intern in 2017, currently employed as Maintenance Manager at Astroid Management We all want success in our career and in life. The difficult part is to start. The first step is not easy, but it’s not difficult either; it starts with your heart’s desire.

Set your goal, motivate yourself, and be systematic. For me, it’s all about thinking of my family’s future. They are my inspiration and strength. From there, balance your time for family, work and study habits. It is overwhelming at first, frustrating, feeling lost and stressed out. Don’t worry its normal!

And of course, it’s not cheap.

You have to buy review materials and look for other resources.

Good thing FMC is there to help.

I received a bursary at the last Christmas party. My registration fees and some review materials were paid off.

Veteran Philippine broadcaster Joe Taruc passes away MANILA – Veteran radio broadcaster Joe Taruc has passed away.

“Our father, Jose M. Malgapo, Jr. or, Joe Taruc to many of us, has gone to join his Creator, early morning of September 30, 2017,” Taruc’s son, GMA broadcaster and television host Jay Taruc, said in a statement. He was 70.

Joe Taruc was the older brother of Winnipeg CKJS Radio’s News Director, Lito Taruc.

Considered a pillar of the broadcast industry for more than four decades, Taruc was among iconic journalists who were on the air from the Marcos dictatorship until his death.

Born on September 17, 1947, Jose Malgapo Taruc graduated from Divina Pastora Academy High School in 1964 and finished his Bachelor of Science in Accounting degree at Jose Rizal College.

He deviated from an accountancy job and instead pursued a career in journalism.

He was the senior vice president of DZRH radio station, where he hosted its morning news program, RH Pangunahing Balita,” and the

Joe Taruc show Damdaming Bayan.

In a statement from the Presidential Communications Operations Office and the Office of the Presidential Spokesperson, they referred to “Manong Joe” as “an institution in the radio broadcast industry” and “he will be missed.”

In a statement, Senator Grace Poe called Taruc “the voice of the truth.”

“Ang kaniyang matalim na komentaryo at malinaw na paguulat ang sandigan ng paniniwala ng ating mga kababayan. Ang

kaniyang pagpanaw ay mag-iiwan ng malaking kahungkagan sa pamamahayag sa himpapawid,” she said.

Winnipeg teams bring home gold and silver from FBA-NA championships FBA Winnipeg deployed a massive delegation of athletes, coaches, committee members, directors, families and friends to represent our city at the annual Intercity Filipino Basketball Association of North America (FBA-NA) tournament in Detroit, Michigan over the Labour Day weekend. The FBA Winnipeg contingent filled two team buses, while others flew in or drove 24 hours south of the border to attend the event.

Winnipeg fielded 12 divisions ranging from the Mosquitoes (coed 2008/09) to the Masters (1974 and up) among nearly 100 teams from across the US and Canada to compete for basketball glory, bragging rights and gold. The Winnipeg teams got their fair share of that, bringing home two gold medals and five silver.

The weekend started off on a good note at the opening ceremonies when Winnipeg’s

own Patricia Mae Ocampo was crowned Miss FBA-NA 2017. This is the second year in a row that a Winnipeg beauty has been won the honour. And after the first day of competition, most of Winnipeg’s teams were also doing well with 2-0 records.

The results Our 6-foot & Under Open Division, coached by Leo Sadiua, was the dominant team. They went through the tournament undefeated and won their first ever championship gold.

Congratulations to the team and to MVP winner, Chris Demeulon Bartolay.

The Tykes Division (2006/07) under coaches Arsenio dela Cruz and Jomar Guaring was also an impressive team, winning games by over 30 points. They faced the tough team of Chicago for Winnipeg’s first of two championships.

Congratulations to John Mallari who won the MVP award.

Our Men’s Open Division, with coach Rob Adelantar, went four and one, losing to Toronto by only two points in a buzzer-beater, taking home the silver.

Mosquito Divison (co-ed 2008/09), coached by Mike Ragasa and John Medina, made it to the finals for the second time.

They lost to a much bigger team from Durham but took home silver.

The Peewee Division (2004/05) under Coach Jomar Guaring and Coach Randy Caparas was also a very strong team, amazing the crowd with their skills. The Bolingbrook team won the gold, however, and our PeeWees took the silver.

The Bantam Girls (2002 and younger) with Coach Ron Balingit couldn’t get passed a very strong Missassauga Team in the finals.

Winnipeg took the silver and they promise to be back stronger next year.

The Junior Boys (2000/01)

team, coached by Ruel Maranan, Romel Dimaunahan, and Ric Guerra, was also in the finals.

Shawn Maranan suffered a cramp early in the second half and could not recover. The other boys soldiered on but came up a little short. They took home the silver for their efforts.

After starting out with 3-0 record, our Ladies Open Division with Coach Arsenio dela Cruz lost to Missassauga in the semi-final, but the girls played really well this year.

Our Seniors Team under Coach Alvin Mansilungan also had a good start with a 3-0 record but they came up short against Austin San Antonio Team in the semifinal.

Coach Iggy Grenivsky battled hard only to lose in the semi-final against Austin San Antonio Team.

Our Masters Div struggled in the first game and lost by over 10 points to Detroit, who went on to become the champions of the tournament.

Loralee wins back-to-back FSL championships Loralee won their first Filipino Softball League (FSL) championship in 2016 and they did it again this year at the Northwood Community Centre Park on September 10.

The team finished fourth in the regular season standings and faced tough opposition in the semifinals, but they managed to pull off a surprising upset win over the top-ranked Sarte team.

This put Loralee up against the young and talented team of La Familia in an intense double-overtime championship game that could have gone either way. In the end, Loralee won the day with a final score of 16 to 13.

Congratulations to the whole Loralee team – especially manager Loreto Opinga; Finals MVP, John Aaron; and Regular Season MVP, Edwin Dipasupil.
