Who’s sexist?

There is currently an online petition going around urging the Miss Universe Organization to scrap the holding of the 2017 pageant in the Philippines because of the “objectionable, scandalous, and demeaning sexist attitude demonstrated by the newly elected leaders of our country, by no less than President Rodrigo Duterte, and his cohorts towards womankind.” In a Facebook post, a certain Annie Serrano said she had sent a letter to the Miss Universe Organizing Committee in which she said: “In recent months, chauvinism, brutal shaming, rape jokes and a sweeping disregard for women as persons deserving not merely of a token, but true, respect has been exhibited by the President of the Philippines with his salacious and sexist comments and treatment of female reporters and opposition figures, which has carried over to his allies in the Philippine Congress.

“To hold the Miss Universe Pageant in the Philippines at this time would serve as a reward of

this intolerable behaviour and excuse such behaviour. It would reinforce a troubling trend in our society. It would make your organization a partner to these backward and dangerous steps which are serious violations of the International Convention on the Elimination of All Forms of Discrimination Against Women (CEDAW).”

Now I have no problem with the Miss Universe pageant not being held here in the Philippines; in fact I wish it weren’t held anywhere at all. Despite what people say about it being about brains and beauty, in my opinion it is nothing but a blatant showcase of the exploitation, objectification, and commodification of women.

What else do you call the parading of women wearing various styles of clothing — and at times almost nothing at all — before an audience that includes men who are free to ogle them?

So far Miss Serrano’s online petition has been signed by only 152 people, including former Department of Social Welfare and

Development (DSWD) Secretary Corazon “Dinky” Soliman and former Presidential Adviser on the Peace Process Teresita “Ging” Quintos-Deles — both of whom worked under former President Benigno Aquino III. What I find strange in the petition is that those who launched it apparently don’t see the irony in what they’re doing.

Consider this paragraph in the petition: “Do not hold Miss Universe in the Philippines. Be a partner for the liberation and not the subjugation of women. Take your pageant elsewhere and do not reward a regime that is trying to turn back the clock as far as women’s causes are concerned.”

I didn’t know beauty pageants were a bastion for the liberation of women; from what I hear and know, these contests can be brutal on women. They work long hours, virtually starve themselves to remain thin, and often resort to cosmetic surgery to become the “best version” of themselves.

Beauty pageants also give an unrealistic view to young girls who can be led to think that they are beautiful only if they are tall, have perfect skin, have features of a goddess, and have a bust/waist/ hip measurement of 36-24-36. The fact that such “vital statistics” are even measured gives us a clue as

to where beauty pageants think beauty lies.

And of course, let’s not forget that the Miss Universe brand was owned by Donald Trump from 1996 to 2015. In light of the Republican presidential candidate’s recent comments about women, I think it’s safe to say where the heart of the pageant really lies.

So it’s ironic that the petitioners — most of whom are women — are asking the Miss Universe owners not to hold it here on the premise that Duterte is sexist when the concept of a beauty pageant itself is sexist. If anything, they should be praising Duterte who, despite his bad language and self-confessed womanizing, had actually taken steps to make sure beauty contests in Davao don’t demean women. In this city, for example, no contests are allowed to have bikini portions. How many mayors have done that for their women constituents?

Demographic reality and immigration in Canada The never-ending American presidential election cycle has focused on immigration and arguments raised against the country opening borders to refugees and other immigrants.

Rather than discuss the merits of the protectionist popular appeal of Donald Trump with his “America First” slogans we, in Canada, need to be more aware of how important immigration is in terms of our population growth and worldwide competition. We should first compare Canada as an immigration destination with the Philippines as one of the principal providers of newcomers to the country.

As of September 29, 2016, Canada’s population is 36,370,686 compared to 102,642,935 in the Philippines. Canada is now ranked 38th in world population compared to 12th for the Philippines. The rankings have changed for both countries since 1965 when Canada ranked 30th and the Philippines 23rd. Canada has fallen five places and the Philippines increased by 11. In 1965 the median age for Canadians was 27 and this has increased to 40.8 in 2016. In comparison the Philippines had a median age of 17 in 1965 and 24.4 in 2016.

The population of both countries is getting older but we need to be alarmed when the median age in Canada was set at 40 in 2010,

41 in 2015 and down slightly to 40.8 in 2016. We are not only falling in terms of our proportion of the world’s population but also becoming older as we speak.

Like in most first world countries, Canadians do not replace themselves. The fertility rates have dropped in Canada over roughly a similar reporting period. 1971 was the last time the replacement level of fertility of 2.1 children per woman was reached.

Since that time, couples have not been replacing themselves.

The current replacement level of fertility in Canada of 1.61 is roughly the same as that of 2011 and is up slightly from the low of 1.51 a decade earlier. It helps explain the rise in the median age to over 40 years of age, if we also consider that the average age for women giving birth is now over 30 years of age. We have not replaced ourselves for well over 40 years and have maintained a healthy population growth and place in the world economy through bringing in newcomers, both family members and skilled worker applicants.

It is important to note that over 300,000 newcomers arrived in Canada over the last year, the highest number since modern record keeping began.

The 320,932 total number represented a rise of 33.3 per cent over the previous year. The

arrival of Syrian refugees, which began in November 2015, partly explains the increase. More newcomers came through family reunification, skilled worker immigration and provincial nominations representing the largest components. Immigration Minister John McCallum has stated many times that the country wants to boost immigration as a way to alleviate the demographic challenges of an aging population and one that does not replace itself through birth rates. Statistics Canada reported, “The country had not received such a large number of immigrants in a single annual period since the early 1910s, during the settlement of Western Canada.”

These numbers represent a marked shift in Canadian demographics, with record numbers of arrivals contrasted with an aging population. There were 6.5 million Canadians over the age of 65 in July of this year compared with 5.8 million children. By comparison in 1986 there were twice as many children as people who were 65 years and older. Manitoba’s population increased by 22,147 people in the past year – its best growth since 1971. Many newcomers are prairie bound with 27.9 per cent of arrivals settling in the region.

The share of immigrants who settled in Quebec and Ontario meanwhile was at the lowest

levels in a long time, at 54.4 per cent. There are changes in the destinations and some of these can be attributed to the success of the provincial nominee programs in Manitoba, Saskatchewan, Nova Scotia, New Brunswick, Newfoundland and Labrador. All these provinces enjoyed record years for population growth. And Alberta ranked number two as a destination for new Canadians for the first time.

The numbers speak for themselves and undermine the protectionist attitude of Donald Trump built on the attitudes of keeping newcomers out.

Canada needs newcomers to fuel our growing economy and to provide the tax base to keep our institutions healthy. Rather than looking for ways to build more walls to keep foreign nationals out we should be building bridges to bring in more. Thank you Pope Francis for these sentiments and also the Liberal government in Ottawa who are leading the way.

Immigration is something Canada cannot do without.

Keep your relationship on track Dear Ate Anna, My husband and I have been married for eight years. I used to think that I had a happy marriage.

Lately I have been feeling that my husband and I are like roommates rather than husband and wife – if you know what I mean. What has happened?

Elizabeth Dear Elizabeth, Every couple in a long term relationship, whether married or not, will have times when they wonder, “Is this all there is?” If you can figure out what may be causing that feeling, you have a better chance of making the changes that will get your relationship back on track.

Elizabeth, part of the problem may be the expectations you have of your relationship. In the past, a wife had certain roles or jobs that she was expected to do as a good wife. A husband had his own set of responsibilities. Today, these roles are not as clear, which creates their own stress. In addition, people have higher expectations of marriage or a long-term relationship and how it will meet their emotional needs.

If we feel that our expectations are not being met, we may wonder if there is something wrong with either our relationship or our partner. Firstly, we should look at our hopes and dreams. Are they realistic? From where do expectations about a satisfying relationship come? Magazines?

Reality TV? Unfortunately, these are not always reliable sources of information about meaningful relationships.

Many couples find that even if they have discussed important issues beforehand, marriage

or living together long term is different than they thought it would be. Couples gain success in their relationship by “hanging in there” and learning how to tackle problems and manoeuvre through the complex issues of everyday life. It may seem easier to just blame the other person and end the relationship. However, success in a relationship requires some commitment to continuing that relationship, as long as it does not involve an endless cycle of arguing about the same problems or abusive behaviour.

Effective communication helps people problem-solve the common relationship conflicts about money, sex, household chores, in-laws, and lack of time.

Today, couples have the added challenges of technology. You can’t communicate effectively while you or your partner is checking their iPhone, watching TV, or reading the latest gossip online.

Busy schedules can also be a real roadblock to dealing with important relationship issues. It might be necessary to make an actual appointment with each other. Put the cell phones on silent and let voicemail pick up your calls. It might be helpful to get away from home to have this conversation – perhaps just going to a coffee shop so that children and chores etc. are not a distraction.

Even partners who love each other very much sometimes experience difficulties in their sexual relationship. This is also an area where unrealistic expectations can cause frustration. Adding to this situation is the fact that both men and women are badly lacking

in sex education and sexual selfawareness. This is unfortunate because sex is an important part of a relationship and it brings a couple closer together. Sex is not just about making babies. Sex releases hormones that help our bodies both physically and mentally, and sustains the chemistry between partners in a satisfying way.

It is a fantasy that good sex “just happens” – especially over the lifespan of a longterm marriage or relationship.

Differences in sexual desire and what is or is not sexy and enjoyable are good topics for conversation.

Most people have grown up with the message that talking about sex is taboo so it can be difficult to talk about ourselves in this way. But it can also help to build intimacy in a relationship – emotional intimacy as well as physical intimacy.

In fact, the emotional intimacy that comes from working together on resolving a relationship issue can lead to a better connection

between partners. Elizabeth, relationship issues are complex.

But a satisfying relationship is worth the time and effort it takes to keep it strong.

History with a bit of humour The study and writing of history can at times be interesting, exciting, and sometimes tedious.

For those who spend hours upon hours in archives, sifting through hundreds and thousands of pages of documents, it can be a lonesome task, as well. Yet, there are lighthearted moments that make the task a happy one, and the odd time we have to stop and laugh at what our sources are telling us.

When I teach Asian history at the University of Manitoba, I love telling the story of Tsunayoshi, the Japanese shogun of the Tokugawa period who loved his dogs so much, he spent more time tending to them than to his country.

Of course, these funny anecdotes actually tell us a lot about the time. In the case of Tsunayoshi, it is a reminder of the life of luxury that comes with being a king, emperor, or shogun.

With many others there to do the work of ruling a country for you, a leader like Tsunayoshi – with a lot of money to spend and no one to answer to – can obsess over frivolities that most others could never dream of. That’s is why the “boat that sank the Chinese navy” is both a funny event in history, but also a sobering one that warns against the luxuries of state life.

The story of this infamous ship has to do with the decline of the Qing Dynasty in China and the corruption that had filled the court. Under the direction of the Empress Dowager Cixi, the Summer Palace in Beijing was ordered rebuilt following the shameful destruction by the British Lord Elgin - who burned it down as part of the British attempt to subjugate China in the nineteenth century. Unfortunately, the money used to rebuild the Summer Palace had actually been set aside to rebuild the Chinese navy, which was needed to fight against the growing aggression of the British. As the story goes, most of the money went to the creation of a single stone ship that was in reality a palace for Cixi and her court in the Summer Palace. While a beautiful piece

of architecture, the palace also represents the wastefulness of corruption and the silliness of history. A navy sunk because of a stone ship? Good grief.

I have come across a good chuckle or two in my own research, which have also had larger meanings. The documents I have are often between Canadian officials in Manila and the federal government in Ottawa, and they give their frank opinion of Filipino officials and diplomats.

On more than one occasion, the ambassador of Canada or another government official has remarked on the friendliness of Filipinos.

One wrote that a meeting with the Philippine agricultural minister was “characterized by infectious Filipino amiability.” There are regular stories in these reports on the major political figures in the Philippines, such as Imelda Marcos, General Carlos P. Romulo, the Minister of Foreign Affairs under Ferdinand Marcos, and Ramon V. Del Rosario, who was the Philippine ambassador to Canada for many years.

The 1970s and 1980s saw the strengthening of PhilippineCanadian relations. With the growth of ASEAN and the role that the Philippines was taking in global affairs, Canada wanted to enhance the already-friendly relations between the two countries, both to bolster trade and to improve Canada’s position in the Asia-Pacific region. Because of their good relations, the Philippines was Canada’s point contact for the rest of ASEAN. The Department of Foreign Affairs recognized that improving relations with the Philippines was going to be a deeply personal affair, and that strong personal relationships had to be forged. A letter from April 1980 stated that setting up in-person meetings with Filipino officials was important because Filipino government officials valued personal contact.

Furthermore, Romulo presented a challenge in this regard because he was no exception to this and was concerned to maintain his

Around the same time of this assessment, government officials were scrambling to find a university in Canada that would award Romulo with an honorary degree. The Department of Foreign Affairs had been inviting Romulo for years to visit Canada in an attempt to improve relations, but he always had to back out.

After a few occasions, government officials heard rumours that this was because Romulo wanted to receive an honorary degree from a Canadian university before any visit would take place. At this time, he had nearly seventy honorary degrees, but had not received one from Canada.

As a major player in Philippine foreign affairs, and with someone who had much clout in the circle of Marcos’ Martial Law government, Canadian officials were concerned with appeasing Romulo. Thus, what seemed as a trivial thing – adding one more degree to seventy – was taken very seriously as a matter of national interest. When the University of Windsor rescinded its offer of an honorary degree in late 1980 – due to protests from members of the university towards Romulo’s affiliation with Martial Law – there were real fears that Romulo would be so personally offended

that it would have far reaching implications for PhilippineCanadian relations, and that it might even sabotage Canada’s ASEAN position.

The Philippine ambassador, Del Rosario, was the point person in these negotiations, and at one point government officials mused that he was “praying for help from any [quarter] on this [subject].” Indeed, when he found out that Windsor had withdrawn its offer, Del Rosario apparently had a “temper tantrum” that was so embarrassing he asked for it to be “stricken from the record” after being calmed by news that the government was working on a solution. When the Royal Military College of Canada offered Romulo an honorary Doctor of Laws degree, Romulo decided that he would finally visit Canada in the fall of 1981. Romulo was apparently so pleased at this that in June 1981, he sought out the Canadian ambassador “across [a] crowded room[,] almost bowling over a waiter in process.”

In this time, and over these amusing events, relations between Canada and the Philippines greatly improved. The two countries had active trade relations – with almost equal amounts of goods and services flowing both ways – and were political allies on the

global stage. Moreover, officials on both sides often referred to the large population of Filipinos living in Canada as a common ground.

Both Romulo and Del Rosario were also very fond of Canada and reportedly appreciated the many attempts that upper ranking officials made to personally interact with Philippine officials.

These records reflect the growing relations between Canada and the Philippines. Indeed, these were long standing relations as Canada had been one of the first nations to recognize and celebrate Philippine independence in 1946.

With greater flows of Filipino immigrants to Canada, growing trade, and Canada’s desire to become a Pacific power, it was in the interests of both nations to improve relations. Indirectly, this has facilitated the flow of immigrants to Canada, and a great show of friendship was made in 1979 when Manila and Winnipeg became sister cities. These stories, having a bit of humour to them, show one of the ways that this friendship has been made by personal interactions between officials who, in reality, were friends outside of political office.

Communicating our health My last article discussed the importance of having the right environment for your child. This month, my focus is on wellness and health.

Our school has built a culture that encourages sending kids to school with healthy snacks.

Proper nutrition is key to a child being ready to learn – and health

goes beyond just what they eat.

We practice mindfulness at school and we also are working on self-regulation and being awareness of how we’re feeling (and why we’re feeling that way).

I recently told my students that I was feeling sick (hello, flu season!) and that I needed to take care of myself. I asked them what

I could do to help prevent myself from getting worse. Without my prompting, they were busy talking to each other to give me advice: get plenty of rest, drink plenty of fluids (preferably tea), eat my vegetables and fruits, and make sure I washed my hands. A student approached me privately and told me that I also need to fully rest and that means to not worry about them with a guest teacher.

That was so thoughtful and also a deeper idea. These are sixth graders who are aware of

physical health needs, and on a deeper level, understand what else could hinder my recovery from a cold or flu.

Parent Tip: healthy practices Be aware of our own health (physical, mental, emotional) and be vocal about that experience.

My being honest with my students has led to them being honest about me. They can tell me when they’re antsy and they, themselves, can figure out what they need to regain focus.

Something our school is doing is called “Zones of

Regulation” and it has been working out really well so far in my classroom. It is helping my students (and myself!) be more aware of how we’re feeling throughout the day and how that can affect our learning and others’ learning, and what we can do about it. A quick Google or Pinterest search should give you some ideas of how these zones work. Give it a try!

Right here, right now When was the last time you felt completely satisfied with where you currently were in life? Maybe it was not so long ago, or possibly it was a while ago, or maybe you are already feeling satisfied right now. Nonetheless, I’ve witnessed through my personal experiences and through the experiences of those around me that we humans tend to be constantly “hungry for more.” Let me tell you a quick story of an experience of mine as an example. In fact, this story is the inspiration behind this article.

I am currently a full time music student and have made the conscious decision not to take on a part time job during the first few months of studies in order to enjoy being fully immersed into

music. This was a goal of mine for a while to finally work on my music with focus and an abundant balance of time. Finally I can say I’ve made it to that place in my life, thanks be to God. I was fifteen when I had my first job. It didn’t take long until I’d look for multiple jobs.

I remember being a full time University student and having three jobs at a time. Sometimes it still boggles my mind how I was able to do that, but it did happen and I really did enjoy the work load. When I had my first “big girl job” (i.e. first full time job out of university/college) I recall thinking to myself, “I look forward to the day when I can take a break from working and just

be fully immersed into music.”

So I made it a goal for myself to work hard and save up a lot so that someday, I can afford to be immersed into music without the distractions of working, even if it were just for a few months.

Fast forward to today: I am a full-time music student and unemployed and as much as I was looking forward to this, for some reason I sometimes still feel anxious about it, thinking to myself “I should probably get a job soon.” However, this was a dream of mine to be fully immersed into music and now that I am, why am I still looking to do more? Then it was revealed to me that there are challenges in no matter stage of life we’re in and it is so easy to fall into the temptation of seeing the challenges outweigh our blessings. I am learning more and more each day to celebrate the blessings during the right here, right now stage of my life and to really live in it. So with that said, I’m going to make sure that I remind myself that it is a blessing for me to be in this stage of my life right here, right now. I won’t rush it, and instead I’ll enjoy it because eventually things will never be like this again.

So why share this story with you? Simple. I hope that as many of us realize that we are so blessed right here, right now. As mentioned earlier, there will be challenges in every stage of our

The interview option Going through any interview, whether it is for a job, a feature or for any other purpose, is always terrifying for some, if not most people. I personally dread going through an interview, not only because I don’t like the feeling of being put on the spot and at the receiving end of what may be a subjective judgment, but also, because I know that if I get too nervous, it could end catastrophically. I oftentimes have regrets after an interview, thinking that I could have done better.

But there is no undo button in an interview; once it’s done, it’s done.

When the interview option was offered to confirm my engineering academic qualification with Engineers Geoscientists Manitoba (EGM), I knew right away that it would be my last option. I can cite a plethora of reasons why, which may be echoed by others who have been offered this option, but opted to take another route instead: (1) no idea what the interview process entailed; (2) no resources, mentors or references; (3) lack of self-confidence to be able to fully express myself in the English language; (4) limited information.

I thought back then that this was a one-time shot; if you fail the interview then you have to wait and re-submit another assessment qualification.

In later years, I would find out that the interview option results vary: from having all confirmatory exams waived, which will get you an invitation to apply to become a member of the EGM; or some confirmatory exams waived, where, as an example, if two out of five are waived, you will still need to complete the three remaining confirmatory exams; or none at all, which simply means, you failed to demonstrate your engineering/ geoscience experience through interview.

It is no surprise that out of all the available options for engineering academic qualification with the EGM, the interview option is the least popular choice in the Filipino Members Chapter (FMC). In fact, there are only a handful of chapter members who went through the interview option, and most had the same result – not all assigned confirmatory exams were waived.

The association website indicates that the interview option may be offered to academic assessment applicants who appear to have over 10 years of engineering and geoscience work experience.

I know for sure that it is a panel interview. So if typical one-on-one interviews appear to be daunting, just imagine a panel interview.

One brave soul may just change that unenthusiastic perception about going through the interview option.

Jun Tapia Jun Tapia immigrated to Winnipeg with his family two years ago. One of his priorities

was to get his engineering degree accredited by the EGM. Back then, he was so determined to be recognized as an engineer in the province of Manitoba that it didn’t really matter what route he would take to get it, whether writing the assigned confirmatory exams, taking equivalent courses, going through the interview, participating in the IEEQ program, or other available options.

Jun is a Civil Engineer with over 20 years of experience in infrastructure and transportation projects, specializing in highway and railway design and construction. His involvement from conceptual planning to project implementation and closeout, equipped him with the necessary skills to deliver complex and challenging projects with quality and efficiency. This paved the way for him to travel to various countries in Asia and the Middle East.

He came prepared by bringing all the required documents and submitted them to the EGM for academic assessment soon after arriving in Canada. In a couple of months, he received the assessment result, which required him to write five confirmatory exams and five options to satisfy the requirements, one of which is the interview.

At first, his decision was to take equivalent courses. “I already made necessary preparations, reached out to government services for financial assistance for my study, and met with the association representative at the University of Manitoba (UofM) to get an overview and a better understanding of the equivalent courses route,” said Jun. But just after all those preparations, he got an offer to work for a government agency with a full-time position directly related to his field of experience.

He knew from previous discussions with the association representative at UofM that there would be no evening or weekend classes available for the courses that he needed to take.

He continued, “I knew that it would be very challenging if not totally impossible to have a regular 8 to 5 job and study at the same time. At that point, I needed to step back and reassess my plans for accreditation, and that was the time that I finally decided to go for the interview option.”

His preparation included assessment of his strengths and what topics he was most comfortable discussing with the panel.

“So I looked at the Canadian Engineering Qualifications Board (CEQB) syllabus and carefully chose the courses and informed the association of my decision to take the interview option with the list of my preferred courses,” he said.

Upon confirming the interview

schedule, he then gathered all information from his previous projects for his presentation.

At the end of each day, after work, he would go straight to the library to read and review the courses. He even would take time off from work just to spend more time reading and rehearsing for his presentation. He would rehearse not only for delivery and content, but also to make sure his presentations was within the allotted 30 minutes.

Come interview day, Jun said, “Probably just like some of us, I also feel uncomfortable and nervous when I hear the word ‘interview.’ Because you don’t only need to provide answers to questions, you need to provide answers right away, and the worst part is that you need to say it in English.”

But his confidence stayed afloat, because he chose the courses he’s most comfortable with. It also helped that the members of the panel asked their questions in a gracious and polite way. “They made me feel at ease as they listen intently with interest, appreciating all the answers I gave them,” said Jun. The interview went for over an hour, but with respect and professionalism shown by the panel, Jun’s stress and anxiety at the interview was eased and at the end of the interview, he breathed a sigh of relief, convinced that the interview went well.

A week went by before he got the news that, based on the interview, all the assigned confirmatory exams were waived!

He became a member of the association as Engineer-InTraining (EIT) in December 2015, finally achieving his most desired goal. With EIT at the end of his name, Jun can now validate himself as an engineer in Canada.

“I kept my focus on that goal, and with support from my family, friends, and colleagues, and with hard work, a bit of luck, and lots of prayers, I achieved my goal and succeeded in getting my accreditation. I just want to say that nothing is impossible as long as you set your goal, keep your focus, and work hard to achieve it,” said Jun. He is now working as a Roads and Highways designer for Dillon Consulting, where he does preliminary and detailed design of roads for the city and other parts of the province. He added, “My current role gives me the opportunity to work on very exciting and challenging projects.

I had the chance to be involved in some projects for the City of Winnipeg, like the Southwest

Rapid Transit project, and the Fermor Avenue Bridge project.”

After his personal experience, Jun believes that if you have the knowledge and experience on the courses that you are pursuing, then, by all means, go for the interview. He cautioned, however, that if you are not convinced that you have adequate knowledge and experience, then you might want to choose other routes.

Quartz crystal is often made into faceted crystals, smooth crystal balls, jewellery and even chandeliers. When light is applied to the crystal, it enhances the faceted crystal by throwing prisms of coloured light. This rainbow light is thought to be especially auspicious and beneficial and can help an unloved person feel loved when they bathe in this light.

3. Citrine Beautiful and lemony-yellow, citrine is the colour of business. It

represents the earth element with its yellow colour. Because of its golden-hue, citrine is thought to attract wealth and prosperity.

Someone in sales or in business - or just wanting to climb the ladder of success would benefit from having a citrine crystal on the desk.

4. Amethyst With its deep purple colour, amethyst is a royally coloured stone associated with great wealth. Amethyst can be worn as jewellery or displayed in the home.

Amethyst geodes are believed to possess great wealth energy and often used in gem trees. Because of their association with the earth mother, it is believed to be able to keep a wandering husband at home. They are also believed to be able to provide healing energy, reducing anger and depression.

5. Rose quartz This is known as the love stone. The pink stone represents the sweet and tender feelings of love in a committed relationship.

The mineral cinnabar occurs around new volcanic activity or alkaline hot springs and is associated with mercury, pyrite, marcasite, opal, quartz, chalcedony, and dolomite. It is rarely, if ever, used in feng shui. What’s most commonly thought of as cinnabar is actually a resin product. This cinnabar that is used in feng shui is an ancient resin that’s been used for medicine, varnish, incense, dye, and decoration and often called dragon’s blood.

FENG SHUI Q&A Question: I live in an old house that is falling down us (literally). The bathroom is in the southeast wealth corner. The floor is shot and sinking. Moving is not an option. Every room needs major work, what can I do to improve my house and life?

Answer: I’ve lived in homes that had holes in the floors, walls or ceilings. But we bought them that way with the intent to repair them in the days before it was called flipping. However, it takes time to renovate, and you usually only do it as your budget allows.

A broken down house means being “broke” financially, but I know you already know that. Do whatever you can to make repairs

to the house.

You might want to do an enhancement to help you earn more, but the disrepair will drag your life down faster than a turtle or a frog will bring it up.

Keep working on repairs, activate the front door with a fresh coat of paint, and make the bedroom and living room as nice as you can. Keep the house as neat as possible, and again, keep at those repairs. Add a nice vase of flowers or a pretty plant to add some growth energy. Make sure the landscaping outside is kept up to keep plants neat and trim.

The last thing I would say is do what you can to improve yourself as much as you can. Take a class, get a certification, do something that helps you improve yourself so you can move up in your career or have more options at work, and do this while working on your house. This one-two punch will help move your luck further along!

A faithful friend remembered Antonio Polvorosa, whom we fondly called Tony, succumbed to cancer on October 5, 2016 and was laid to rest at the Holy Family cemetery on October 12th, following a funeral mass at the St. Anthony de Padua Catholic Church.

He left a legacy of beautiful memories that together constitute a tribute to our collective Filipino traits. Knowing that his earthly life was imminently coming to an end, family and friends gathered at the St. Boniface General Hospital Palliative Care Unit on September 30 to celebrate his 67th birthday. Then, an overflowing throng gathered at the Cropo Funeral Home on the evening of October 12 for the wake, lamay, to pay our respects and to comfort his family. We heard stories of his service to our Filipino community and of his friendship and faithfulness to so many; of his heroism, saving the lives of strangers from drowning; of his helpfulness, hospitality, generosity, humility and positive attitude; of his sense of humour and heartfelt camaraderie; and yes, of his love of fishing.

I must add Tony was a true fisherman. Know him and you

know a lot of people. He and I first met in 1988 when I needed his help as I prepared to embrace the nobility of politics. Our friendship has since grown to involve our families. Yours truly was, therefore, deeply honoured and humbled when his family asked me to do the eulogy at the church filled with mourners. While it is a privilege to be asked to speak at any anniversary celebration when the honouree hears you from the podium, it is a far greater privilege to be asked to share from a lectern your memories of someone who is quietly resting in eternal peace. It was, indeed, my singular privilege to say a few words of remembrance about a fellow community servant.

Like many of us, Tony faced his own challenges. Raising three children, while both he and his wife Vita were working, was no easy task as it is with most newly landed immigrants.

Children, particularly during their adolescence, do have their own priorities and would like to assert them. Not infrequently there would be tensions within the family. A child lost to an accident could magnify any family stress.

Tony and Vita coped well. Vita

with daughter Tia and son Dan (and his own family: wife Lenore and children Landen, Liam and Deziree) remember him as always passionately loving, even as they remember him being a disciplinarian. Tia and Dan are stories of career success – a source of pride for any family.

Imagine as parents, siblings, and in-laws having a member of your family circle voted as one of the top 30 young business entrepreneurs – the only Asian – and featured on the Filipino Channel (TFC) televised in over 25 countries. I am sure you would be filled with pride. Tony and Vita shed their tears of joy and pride, witnessed by millions of the TV audience when they shared the TFC’s interview of Tia on her accomplishments.

All these are a tribute to Tony (and Vita) as parents.

A devoted parishioner, always a pair of helping hands in the parish, and a member of the Knights of Columbus, Tony embodied that same faithfulness beyond his family to the greater community – an attribute his parish priest Rev. Fr. Dominic Yuen equally remembers and so dutifully reminded all at mass.

Faithful and principled and with a

deep sense of others, Tony was a truly fine individual – a gift to our community.

Runners raise funds to free the world from cancer WINNIPEG – Over 4,000 people – runners, walkers, volunteers and cheering spectators arrived at Shaw Park in the early morning of October 2, 2016 to take part in the annual nation-wide CIBC Run for the Cure.

“Participating annually at the CIBC Breast Cancer Run for the Cure has been and continues to be a very meaningful and rewarding experience for me and my daughter, Megan,” said Zorina Chang.

This is the seventh year that the mother and daughter team has participated in the fundraiser.

“Breast cancer is a cause that deeply motivates me and I am excited to be contributing to Canadian Breast Cancer Foundation’s vision of creating a future without breast cancer,” said Zorina.

The money raised during the CIBC Run for the Cure helps to fund critical and ground-breaking research, education, and advocacy initiatives across the country.

According to the Canadian Breast Cancer Foundation, “Breast cancer impacts almost every Canadian at some point in their lives and this year alone an estimated 25,000 Canadian women and more than 200 men

will be diagnosed.”

Melisa Bueno Galura was amazed and grateful because of the support from her family and friends as they joined her early Sunday morning for the run. They call their team, “Melisa’s Pink Angels.”

“This is my second year participating with the CIBC Run for the Cure… this was something personal for me since my life was touched by the Big C. I never thought that at the young age of 31, my life would be shaken. With the help of my husband, son, family and friends, who have supported me through this process, I found the strength to fight. This was the reason I named my team Melisa’s Pink Angels. They’re the same people who have supported me through my battle and now, they’re running with me and helping to raise funds so that we may see a world without cancer…” said Melisa.

The money raised from the run allows Canadian Breast Cancer Foundation to continue to invest in research and help fund different initiatives such as improving early imaging and screening techniques to detect tumours and enhance treatments like surgery and radiation so

The Maceda brothers, Roman (vocals/guitar), Rico (bass/ vocals), and Roque (drums) can be found performing at almost every large gathering, concert and community event. Their success has inspired them to release an album, including original music, which they are launching next month. Pilipino Express had an opportunity to talk to the trio about their music.

Pilipino Express (PE): You have been all over the city for performances lately. What gives you the energy to perform each time?

The 12/21: [What gives us energy is our] love for music, passion to share our talent and [to] entertain people.

PE: How would you describe the kind of music on this album?

Who would really enjoy your album?

The 12/21: The sound of the album is more Alternative Pop Punk with groovy drumbeats, heavy guitar riffs and catchy

melodies. Any age group can listen to our album.

PE: What has been your inspiration when creating original

music?

The 12/21: Everyday life experiences, embracing spontaneity and listening to different genres of music [have inspired us for this album].

PE: In creating your album, what have been your greatest challenges?

The 12/21: Choosing what songs to put on the album. We had 20 original songs ready during the recording process. We chose the songs that are appealing to us and to our listeners.

PE: What advice would you give to other young people who want to pursue music?

The 12/21: Practice as much as you can, listen to different genres not just one [so you’ll have] a broad perspective of what you want to achieve in your music.
