Rodrigo Duterte 16th president of the Philippines

The presumptive president of the Republic of the Philippines, Rodrigo “Rody” Duterte, will take his oath as the 16th president of the Philippines on June 30, 2016.

Duterte ran a campaign pledging to Filipinos – a population already fraught with both manmade and natural misfortunes in the recent past – that he would get rid of the criminals in the country and clean up the corrupt government. While his campaign promises seemed short on policy declarations, Filipinos overwhelmingly voted for him in the May 9 election.

Even among overseas Filipino voters, Duterte was the popular choice. The national and overseas Filipino voter turnout was significantly higher than any previous Philippine presidential election.

On May 11, 2016, the Special Board of Canvassers (SBOC) in Ottawa reported that there was a total of 22,738 out of 79,421 registered voters who cast their votes in 81 precincts or a voter turnout of 28.62 per cent. According to SBOC, See DU30 p10

Duterte and his social media army The 2016 national election will go down in history as the first political exercise in the Philippines in which social media became an important factor — a game changer, even.

Sure Facebook and Twitter were already around in the 2010 and 2013 elections, but their effect was not really felt because relatively few Filipinos were subscribed back then. Most people who were connected to the Internet did so through desktop or laptop computers, which were (and still are) expensive and out of reach of the masses. Smartphones were also still costly, and wireless Internet technology was still slow and prohibitively expensive.

That’s why the social media star then, Gilbert “Gibo” Teodoro Jr., didn’t win. President Benigno Aquino won largely through traditional campaign methods like tri-media advertising and good old town-to-town campaign rallies.

It has only been in the past two or three years that large numbers of Filipinos have been able to access the Internet because the cost of smartphones went down significantly, so much so that one can buy a 4G-enabled phone for as little as 2,000 pesos or 55 Canadian dollars. With such an inexpensive device one can connect to all the social media sites — and Filipinos have done

so with almost reckless abandon.

This year, an estimated 47 million Filipinos are subscribed to Facebook, which means almost half of the 100 million citizens have an account.

Facebook itself has said Filipinos are the “most engaged” voters in Asia-Pacific, with 22 million users actively engaging in conversations about the 2016 election with friends and family members. In an interview with the online news site Rappler, Facebook’s APAC Public Policy head Elizabeth Hernandez said the May 9 polls have been “the number one most engaged elections in Asia-Pacific.” She also said social media plays a critical role and the recently held polls are “the most conversational of all elections in the Philippines.”

The biggest star of social media is undoubtedly Rodrigo Duterte, whose rise from mayor of Davao City to presumptive President of the Philippines in nothing short of phenomenal.

One can probably trace the beginning of his long path to the presidency to super typhoon Yolanda (international name Haiyan), which hit the country in November 8, 2013. Three days later, when it was possible to travel to Tacloban City, which bore the brunt of the storm, Duterte was already on site along with emergency personnel and

equipment from Davao City’s 911 emergency response centre.

He would later describe the utter destruction he saw, and how chaotic the national government’s response was.

Duterte’s quick and effective response to the calamity caught the attention of the people, so much so that a few months later his name began to be floated as a possible presidential candidate.

He would, of course, laugh it off, and it seemed that as the call grew louder, the more he resisted the idea. “I am old,” he would say. “I don’t have money. I do not have the ambition to be President.”

Of course he would also say the presidency is a matter of destiny: If God wants him in Malacañang, He would find a way to place him there.

Instead of launching a campaign for the presidency, Duterte embarked on a “listening tour” on federalism, which he said was a better alternative to the Bangsamoro Basic Law (BBL), which served only the needs of the Moro people. Federalism, he said, would address the entire nation’s desire to move forward because it would give autonomy to all of the regions, not just one.

The tour, however, was seen as a platform on which Duterte would make a run for the presidency; in fact, even his closest adviser, Maribojoc, Bohol Mayor Leoncio Evasco Jr., said at the beginning that the tour would also be an opportunity for Duterte to gauge

the feelings of the people.

It was around this time that Duterte began to dominate social media. Dozens of pages sprouted calling on him to run for President, and more and more Filipinos joined the call mainly through Facebook. Memes, posts, videos, notes, surveys — you name it, his supporters did it just to get the mayor to run. On the eve of the last day of the filing of certificates of candidacy, a group of popular singers — among them Jimmy Bondoc, Paolo Santos, Pido, and Luke Mejares — released a video of the song Takbo [Run] on Facebook, and it was viewed and shared thousands of times in a matter of minutes.

Duterte, of course, would choose to disappoint his followers, but that only served to strengthen his online support. By the time he did announce his presidential bid on November 21, 2015, a critical mass of solid supporters had already been created, and this would eventually carry him to the presidency. Duterte’s use of social media was consistent with the fact that he did not have the money to mount a presidential campaign. The army that rose up more than made up for his lack of funds, and in the end it proved to be more potent than the billions of pesos the other candidates had.

Left behind?

In the literature on migration and diaspora, the term “left behind” refers to those who remain in the home country, while their family members (or friends) leave to live and work abroad, either permanently or temporarily.

In studies of immigration, this group is often forgotten and their perspectives left out. Indeed, many Canadian immigration histories only consider the experience of immigrants once they enter their new country, leaving out their life before migration. Ignoring an immigrant’s life in the homeland, and forgetting those left behind, we only get part of the picture.

Studies on immigration have often taken an economic perspective. That is, the need for well-paid work as a motivating factor in migration. More recently, however, studies have looked at the experiential side of immigration – that is, the perspective of the migrant and their personal experiences. This offers a better perspective than

merely treating migration as an economic decision. While “better pastures” might be a motivation, there are a lot of other considerations, such as reuniting with family abroad or even a desire to have new experiences.

This is not to discredit economic considerations. In the course of my work, it has not been uncommon to hear that an immigrant would prefer to remain in the Philippines, were it not for poor economic and employment conditions. More recent literature looks for the experiential aspect in such economic decisions, too. The decision to immigrate is often tied to one’s sense of responsibility to one’s family, whether it is children, siblings, or parents. To some, it can seem ironic that a parent would leave their family to work for years abroad, but while it means leaving family, it might also mean that children can attend better schools, or that a family’s ancestral home can be repaired or rebuilt. This tension

is so understandable that it is a common theme in Filipino media, such as the movie A Mother’s Story and a number of Maalaala Mo Kaya specials. There is a lot that goes in to the decision to migrate, but often at the root is family.

Studies of Filipinos in Canada have looked at the experiential side of immigration. In particular, Dr. Philip Kelly – who recently worked with ANAK on a nationwide study of Filipino youth – has contributed much to this field. His work looks at both experiences in Canada and the Philippines, and provides a model for others to write about. In particular, he has looked at how one’s history and life in the Philippines affects their life and experience in Canada.

In my own work, I’m guided by the principle that an immigrant’s story does not begin once they arrive in Canada. There are a number of factors that have affected the Winnipeg Filipino community.

My on-going research with the Foreign Affairs Department shows that in the 1950s and 1960s, the Philippine and Canadian governments were trying to negotiate a fair agreement whereby nationals of

each country could enter the other more easily. As these agreements developed, there was also a worsening economic situation in the Philippines, which caused many Filipinos to look abroad for better opportunities. This pattern of looking for a better life abroad has continued for decades. In my interviews with community members, it has often been stated that seeking a better life brought them to Canada.

And so, what of those left behind?

The experiences of Filipinos living in Canada (and abroad) are still tied to the Philippines very often. Immigration does not mean severing ties with family, and with the level of technology available today, communication has never been so instant, cheap, and easy. Thus, immigrant families are able to stay in intimate contact with family and friends, either in the Philippines or elsewhere in the world. There is a lot of literature that studies this from the perspective of the migrant, but more needs to be said about families who remain in the Philippines. A difficult conversation Dear Ate Anna, You often write about the importance of communication.

I agree with you, but every time I try to have a conversation with my partner about our sexual relationship, we end up being frustrated or angry and somebody’s feelings get hurt. We don’t have any big problems, but we do need to work at agreeing on a few small things. What am I doing wrong?

Sylvie Dear Sylvie, Ate Anna is glad to hear that you are trying to communicate about your sexual relationship.

Many of us have difficulty talking openly and honestly with our partner about sex. We also have to remember that being on the receiving end of a conversation about sex can also cause anxiety.

The result may be that both people aren’t clear about explaining how they feel or aren’t listening to each other.

So, it may not be that you are doing anything “wrong.”

However, what you want to say may be different than what you actually say in words. And what you actually say may be different than what your partner hears. Both of you hear what the other person says through your own complex filter of your personality, beliefs, life experiences and fears or insecurities.

You may just need to re-think how well you are saying what you want to say and how to get your message across in a way that minimizes anxiety for your partner. For example, what you want to say is something like, “I wish we had sex more often.” or “I would like to be more sexual in our relationship.”

But because you don’t want to hurt your partner’s feelings, you may say something less direct like “Why don’t we have more sex?”

If you are feeling insecure in your relationship you might even say something like “I wish you weren’t so turned off by having sex with me.”

Your partner may interpret what you are saying as: “There’s something wrong with you because you don’t want to have sex as often as I do.” If they are feeling anxious about the conversation, they might hear: “I want to have sex with other people.” This can end up being a very confusing and frustrating situation for both people!

To improve your chances of getting your message across, spend some time thinking about exactly what you want to communicate.

What is the issue that you want to discuss? Is complete agreement the only satisfactory solution? Are you willing to compromise? If this is an important issue for you, think about what is not negotiable.

Set the stage, by telling your partner that this is important to you and you want to talk about it in a way that is respectful and safe for both of you. Remember to use “I messages.”

Next, discuss if you are both willing to try a reflecting process.

This helps ensure that what you say comes out clearly and that what your partner hears matches closely. This is also true when the other person is talking and you are listening. Reflecting works for any conversation and the process is as follows: 1. You both agree to let each person talk without being interrupted.

2. Once one person has finished talking, the other person repeats what they heard. This isn’t as easy as it sounds and can feel silly and awkward when you first do it. It can also take some discussion to get to the point where you both agree that what was heard is the same as what was said.

3. Once you can agree, you switch roles and the listener now gets to say what they are thinking and feeling.

You can either set aside some time to try this – almost like an exercise, or stop and try it the next time you are having what feels like an important conversation.

It might seem like an awkwardly slow process at first, but it gets easier with practice. Slowing down is actually a good thing when two people are having an important conversation about their sexual relationship. Anger often stems from frustration about not being heard or is a quick reaction to strong feelings.

Sylvie, I hope you and your partner will give this a try. It is worth trying something new and being a bit uncomfortable for the sake of a good relationship.

The breaking news in the immigration world is the release of the Auditor General’s report on citizenship programs tabled in the House of Commons on May 3, 2016. Fraud is one of the major concerns raised by the audit. “We have concluded that Immigration, Refugees and Citizenship Canada’s (IRCC) efforts to detect and prevent citizenship fraud were not adequate,” said Auditor General Michael Ferguson in a prepared statement. “These gaps made it difficult for Immigration, Refugee and Citizenship Canada to assess the impacts of its efforts to combat citizenship fraud.”

Fraud is highly significant and can lead to the revocation of citizenship. Some of the most common reasons for revocation include residency, identity fraud, and undeclared criminal proceedings. The department was criticized for failing to identify

and prevent fraud when dealing with suspicious documents, such as altered passports. One region for example reports that since 2010 that none of the citizenship officers seized any suspicious documents for in-depth analysis.

Further, the department failed to implement a protocol for dealing with “problem addresses” when making decisions about the grant of citizenship. Problem addresses are those known or associated with fraud and used by applicants to meet residency requirements. “For example, one address was not identified as a problem even though it had been used by 50 different applicants, seven of whom were granted citizenship,” said Mr. Ferguson.

The problems within the department are further complicated by poor sharing of information with the RCMP, who have the responsibility to provide information about

Auditor General raises concerns about citizenship programs criminal behaviour among the pool of permanent resident applicants, and the Canada Border Security Services Agency (CBSA), which leads investigations of immigration fraud.

The department of Immigration, Refugee and Citizenship did not keep track of the exact number of fraud risks but reported 700 pending revocation cases as of January 2016. Revocation of citizenship is both “time consuming and costly” but something mandated under the Citizenship Act. Minister McCallum issued a press release on the findings.

“Immigration, Refugee and Citizenship Canada accepts the Auditor General’s specific recommendations, and will work quickly to implement them. My department has already made a

number of improvements to better identify cases where there is the potential for citizenship fraud.”

He also mentioned some of the specific steps IRCC has such as flagging high-risk addresses, better investigative procedures between CBSA and the RCMP, and the implementation of new Program Integrity Framework to “manage fraud risks.” He moved to respond to opposition criticism by restating that his department takes the Auditor General’s findings to heart, and are “continuously looking for ways to improve fraud detection and prevention processes in all of our programs.”

Immigration, for the uninitiated, is not just about the processing of applications but also applying due diligence to ensure that the integrity of all programs, including citizenship,

are not compromised. And yes it is possible for persons who have received a grant of citizenship to be challenged about fraudulent claims and it is also possible that a revocation process can be initiated. If someone breaks the law in Canada they can and will be pursued by the authorities.

This is not just because the Auditor General says it is happening but also because we expect our government officials to enforce the law of the land, as in Sections 10(1)(2) of the Act. Patriotism distorts history Since history is distorted by patriotism, the victims are often the major players in the story of our nation.

Heroes are presented as perfect, sometimes even super human beings, while the contravidas are beyond redemption. Any attempt at truth, like making heroes human again or seeing the past reflected in the present, disturbs people who have been raised on a sanitized version of history.

In 1989, after delivering the inaugural lecture at what has since become the Annual Andres Bonifacio Memorial Lectures, I found myself unconsciously committing the same mistake, letting my patriotism cloud my judgment.

Although it sounds and looks good, the title “The Great Plebeian” brings out a negative image of the bodegero from Tondo.

When I was a child I thought Bonifacio was semi-literate.

To counter this bias, I made reference to the books in Bonifacio’s mini-library, adding that Bonifacio not

only read Spanish but also understood enough to render Rizal’s Ultimo Adios into Tagalog. Someone stood up and stated that according to his research, the first Tagalog translation of the Ultimo Adios was actually made by a Katipunero from Cavite.

Not content with this, he stuck a dagger in Bonifacio’s reputation by saying that Bonifacio stole the Caviteño’s translation by signing his name to it.

Unfazed, I skirted the issue of Bonifacio’s alleged plagiarism by calmly telling the heckler that I agreed wholeheartedly because the translation attributed to Bonifacio happens to be the worst Tagalog translation of the Ultimo Adios ever.

Another person with a poor opinion of Bonifacio’s literary skills happened to be the late great Teodoro Agoncillo who stated in his Revolt of the Masses: The Story of Andres Bonifacio and the Katipunan (1956) that Bonifacio’s literary works “showed poor

handling and lack of confidence in his ability as a translator and as a creative artist.” Agoncillo’s verdict is trustworthy because he was a poet and a short story writer whose interest in Tagalog literature ran parallel to his historical research. He comments on Bonifacio’s literary merits or the lack of them, thus: Some historical writers, more enthusiastic and nationalistic than discerning, call Bonifacio’s poem Pag-ibig sa Tinubuang Bayan referred to as a “poetical masterpiece” and his essay Ang Dapat Mabatid as “great.” I am sure, however, that if such works were placed in the name of another person of no reputation, the same writers would immediately consign those “literary” pieces to the garbage can.

Literary criticism that is based on hero worship is vicious and unreliable.

Bonifacio was a great hero, it is admitted, but he was a mediocre writer – in the artistic sense.

When one of my students asked me why I viewed the past so negatively, I was stunned. All I could blurt out was that the truth hurts.

It was not very convincing, but I guess it illustrated why patriotism distorts history.

I console myself with the idea that Bonifacio, had he applied today, would be very welcome at the U.P. Creative Writing Center’s summer workshops. Readers of this column do not realize how heavy a burden history can be. And while the subject is Bonifacio, why don’t we look back to the Tejeros Convention?

We are very familiar with the story: Katipuneros meet at Tejeros to form a government and elect its officials. Bonifacio, as Supremo of the Katipunan, presides and is subsequently

humiliated when Emilio Aguinaldo is voted president by an assembly with small but noisy elements hostile to Bonifacio. As a consuelo de bobo, Bonifacio is elected to the rather insignificant post of Director of the Interior.

Then, Daniel Tirona questioned young Bonifacio’s academic and professional qualifications for the post. Worse, he suggests an alternative man in such a provocative manner that the hot-headed Bonifacio pulls out his gun to shoot Tirona but is held back. Bonifacio declares the proceedings null and void before storming out of the room with his supporters. This, according to our textbooks, was the beginning of Bonifacio’s end.

A closer look at the sources reveals that Tirona had been spreading black propaganda against Bonifacio outside the hall before and probably during the election.

Another source hints at cheating in the elections, another at prepared ballots. Of course, cheating and violence during elections is not new, but the thought that our founding See AMBETH p7

Becoming a master juggler

We play many different roles in our lives. We are employees, spouses, caregivers and volunteers of our community. In addition, we also have to take care of our own well-being both physical and psychological. For most moms, the work/life balancing act is even more challenging and viewed to be almost impossible.

According to Ann Douglas, author of The Unofficial Guide to Having A Baby and Family Finance: The Essential Guide for Parents, studies have shown that the majority of mothers who work outside the home experience a chronic time crunch. In other words, there simply aren’t enough hours in the day to accomplish everything that needs to be done.

Ann Douglas, who also happens to be a Canadian psychotherapist had the opportunity to interview more than 150 women who were attempting “the ultimate of juggling acts,” balancing life and family, in other words. These women shared dozens of practical strategies for juggling work and family such as little things like

forcing oneself to take some downtime when you’ve been frantically multi-tasking all day.

Some of the “sanity savers” she learned from these tips for staying sane are as follows: Set reasonable working hours and stick to them She indicated that it is important not to let anyone make you feel guilty for turning off your corporate phone or walking away from our computer. We have the right to a personal life.

Learn to cut corners on things that don’t matter Ann Douglas advises to give yourself permission to delegate tasks to someone else.

For most moms like myself, my husband and I do not have the luxury of delegating chores to someone else. We pretty much do everything that we need to do at home, whether it’s yard work, laundry, vacuuming, etc. And because we are the only ones in charge at home, we have to take turns on these matters as required.

Others hire professional cleaners.

Another thing that could be done is to do just enough chores to

keep you from going crazy. Even if you do not have time to clean, do it anyway but do not overdo it.

Another thing is to keep in mind that it is not mandatory to make meals from scratch every single time!

Take care of you This means taking care of our own needs instead of relying on others to take care of us. Ann Douglas says, “this is one job you simply can’t delegate”. According to her study, the ultimate weapon against the craziness around us is to keep our sense of humour.

“How do you do it?” is one question I get asked when folks recognize the challenge I have as a working mom. It really is simple and similar to any other moms out there, I wake and go to work every single day. It does not, however, end there. As soon as I get home, I prepare our supper, feed the kids, get the kids ready for bed, read bedtime stories and say our prayers. When there is a small of window of time, my husband alternates with me on some days to allow me to have some me time in the gym. On the weekends, I spend my time contributing my talents to the community and my church.

Again, it does not end there either. Apart from the demands of family life, I am also required to travel on business from time

that, as a researcher, I need to be careful about what terms I use. “Left behind” has too many negative meanings: that they are abandoned, forgotten by family and friends; that they do not engage or benefit with the migration of another; that they were not an active participant in the decision for the family member (or close friend) to move.

My goal is to best represent the experiences of immigrants to Winnipeg, and Canada, and this

work will include that which plays such a major role in many migrants’ lives: family back home, and life in the Philippines.

From page 4 family members? Did they take part in the decision? Do they feel they are benefitting from it? There are so many questions one might ask.

During my most recent trip to the Philippines this last February and March, I had the opportunity to talk to someone whose sibling recently moved to Winnipeg.

For context, this individual had worked abroad in Dubai, where another sibling currently works.

At present, this individual lives at home in the Philippines and helps run the family store. One lesson I learned from this discussion is that the term left behind is quite often not appropriate, and simply wrong. For one, the suggestion that family members are left behind – which can also be just another way of saying abandoned – creates victims, rather than family members who share in the decision to move. This is not to say that some who remain in the Philippines might not have had a part in the decision making, but it is clear that the decision for an individual to move is not just that individual’s decision. It is one often made after long thought and discussion with family members, and friends. In this interview, it became clear that the migration of the sibling to Winnipeg was not only a family decision, but was part of a larger family strategy.

I love my work. I love how much I learn from my participants.

If you’re trying to conceive and it’s not working, this can be not only stressful and heartbreaking, but also expensive. In vitro fertility treatments, for example, can cost thousands of dollars, with no guarantee of success. But some inexpensive re-decorating might just do the trick.

Using the principles of feng shui, the ancient Chinese body of knowledge revealing how to balance the energies of any given space to assure health and good fortune, creating the right environment can support a couple’s efforts to become pregnant.

3. Pay attention to your front door The front door plays a vital role in feng shui. Even if you’re not trying to get pregnant, it’s important that nothing block your front door. This can prevent energy from entering the house.

Blocking objects in feng shui would include a tree or telephone pole opposite the front door. If there’s something blocking your front door that can’t be removed, hanging a wind chime next to the door helps lift the energy and allows more energy to enter the house, something vital for all homes, but especially those where the occupants are trying to conceive.

Mirrors can also create problems at the front door and impede conception. Following feng shui principles, walking into a house and seeing a mirror directly opposite the door will push energy out of the house, making it difficult to become pregnant. Any mirror that reflects the front door can also become an obstacle to financial success.

Hang a piece of artwork there instead.

4. Fine tune If you’re looking to become pregnant, you’ll also be thinking about a nursery. Storing items in

Eleanor Guerrero-Campbell’s “Stumbling Through Paradise” – A book about the Filipino Canadian immigrant experience Eleanor Guerrero-Campbell’s book, Stumbling Through Paradise, is an intergenerational novel about the Filipino Canadian experience. It is a story about an immigrant’s determination and hope.

“I hope that anyone reading this book might step into the shoes of a newcomer - an immigrant, a refugee and empathize with their struggles, feel compassion for them, and care about them, rather than discriminating against them or resenting them. I hope reading the book will help them understand Filipinos better, too.”

Vancouver-based author Guerrero-Campbell conveyed to Pilipino Express via phone interview.

The novel, “Stumbling Through Paradise: A Feast of Mercy for Manuel del Mundo,” follows the immigrant journey of the Del Mundos (a fictional Filipino family), as they try to build a new life in Canada. The setting is Metro Vancouver rampant with race related tensions such as the ‘English only’ signs in Richmond, ‘monster houses’ in Surrey, and the racial killing of a Filipino youth in Vancouver. It is a three-part novel built around the three generations of the Del Mundos; it ends with a second generation Del Mundo aspiring for political office, challenging the multicultural mosaic of Canada as being inadequate and proposing a new way. Guerrero-Campbell weaves into the novel’s narrative, the problems, issues and solutions to the underemployment of skilled immigrants through the lives of three generations of Del Mundos.

“It’s a novel focused on Filipino immigrants in a positive and balanced manner,” said Aprodicio and Eleanor Laquian, authors of “Seeking a Better Life Abroad: A Study of Filipinos in Canada.”

Guerrero-Campbell worked with skilled newcomers as founding Executive Director of an immigrant service organization in Vancouver.

That’s where she met highly accomplished professionals from the Philippines, China and India who were distraught over the loss of status, income, confidence, and respect. Many were frustrated about failing to secure jobs in their field, when they had been admitted to Canada precisely for their skills.

“My wish is that newcomer immigrants would read my book and realize that they can plan to practise their professions here. They don’t have to despair or give up and settle for just anything and waste their hard earned experience and skills. They don’t have to give up on their paradise...” said Guerrero-Campbell.

Guerrero-Campbell saw the positive impact of programs like mentoring and educating newcomers about credential recognition and the job search process in Canada. She also saw the other side – the concerns of professional regulatory bodies and employers.

“I hope that employers, policymakers, immigrant service providers and professional regulatory bodies would read this book and realize how deep is the impact of severe underemployment on a skilled immigrant, affecting his personal life and family life for a long time to come, as is shown in my book. And perhaps these enablers could try to improve policies, programs and employment for skilled immigrants.”

The book will be launched on May 21, 2016 at the Creekside Community Centre, Olympic Village, in Vancouver. Duterte, nicknamed “Digong,” is a lawyer. He was the mayor of Davao City, on the island of Mindanao, when he ran in the presidential race to succeed outgoing President Benigno Aquino III. Duterte has also served as vice-mayor and congressman representing Davao City during his more than 25 years as a politician.

During his term as mayor of Davao City, he vowed to go after the criminals thus earning him the monikers “The Punisher” and “Duterte Harry.” Publicly condemning the crooks and vowing to get rid of them, he was

Deconstructing

concepts is important to the technical aspects of any business or career. This type of mental processing creates convergent (linear) thinking.

A wise man once said that, “It is not the strongest of the species that survives, nor the most intelligent that survives. It is the one that is most adaptable to change.” A business, or career is much like an economic ecosystem. In order for you to survive you must know “how to learn.” When you take the “l” out of “learn,” you “earn” more! You truly learn something

when your behaviour changes.

You can never get the physical equivalent of anything you want in your life until you’ve taken it from your mind and “hold it” in your hands.

Convergent thinking often doesn’t make room for effective response-ability and how you react to change. Most people want change but are unwilling to change.

Moreover, they’re unwilling to lead the change. “Analysis paralysis” can stop your ability to adapt and is not practical application; it is speculation. The end activity of analysis should be action. Action segues into the master skill that

most human beings rarely excel in.

This master skill says that a “performer” can learn to be flexible, creative and move in different directions and get the same desired outcome. This is referred to as divergent thinking.

This skill set makes 100 per cent of your efforts fool’s gold and pales in comparison to “one percent of the efforts of a hundred people.”

This mega-partnering master skill harnesses limitless potential.

You see, someone who uses 100 per cent of their own outputs is most likely an analyser. They can become bounded by their own rationale and victimized by blind

spots that can only be revealed to them through the process of moving closer to getting goals accomplished.

This is the master skill known as synthesis. It is the ability to locate and leverage seemingly unrelated people, places and things and unite them together towards a common objective. This is the opposite of analysis. Analysis is inward fixated intelligence and synthesis is outward focused intelligence.

Hannah Sagaral concert fundraiser Hannah Sagaral, one of Canada’s competitors at last year’s World Championship of Performing Arts (WCOPA), performed for fans and friends at Pampanga Restaurant on May 8.

The concert was a fundraiser for the singer’s upcoming trip to New York where she will participate in a four-week musical theatre programme at the New York Film Academy. Hannah gained admission to the programme on the recommendation of WCOPA judge Joey Zangardi.

“I am excited,” said Hannah.

“I’m venturing into a new chapter of my life as an aspiring educator in the fields of science, theatre, dance, and music, and I know that this trip is definitely a huge stepping-stone to reach my goals and dreams.”

Ernest Habacon and Teri Agpoon emceed the show that included performances by fellow WCOPA finalist Bea Jaime and other talented entertainers Jesse Cabrera, Teri Agpoon, Arnold Tongol and members of Exhale Dance Studio. The show was

produced with the assistance of event designer Just in Couture and the sound system of RSM Entertainment. Mhigz Tolentino and Adrian Reyes took care of Hannah’s hair and makeup.

“I want to thank God for everyone who helped me,” said Hannah. “I cannot explain how grateful I am to have been surrounded by people who believe in my dreams, especially my parents for their never-ending support, love, and prayers.”

Pinagpala ng Diyos si Isaac at patuloy na lumago ang kaniyang kabuhayan at siya ay yumaman. halip na gumanti o pumatol sa kanila, gayahin natin si Isaac.

Ipagpasakamay natin ang mga taong ito sa Diyos at patuloy tayong mabuhay nang tahimik.
