Conversation on immigration

The federal government wants to know what Canadians think about immigration.

From July 5 until August 5, 2016, Immigration Refugees and Citizenship Canada (IRCC) is asking Canadians to help them “write the next chapter” of Canada’s story by sharing their ideas and opinions about immigration.

The feedback gathered from Canadians through on-line, written submissions will be used to help guide decisions on how many immigrants Canada will welcome in the coming years and help to determine the future of immigration in Canada.

A discussion guide presenting the issues and background information is posted on the IRCC web site at www.cic.gc.ca/ english/department/consultations/ nationaldiscussion.asp The government will also consult with Canadians through cross-country round-table discussions led by Immigration

John McCallum, Minister of Immigration, Refugees and Citizenship Minister John McCallum and Parliamentary Secretary Arif Virani, and other public opinion research.

Her eyes twinkle when talking about her younger years as a selfconfessed “trouble-maker” in the Philippines. Now at 84 years old, Erlinda Magnaye Ramos, still clearly remembers the friends she hung out with in school, her unforgettable adventures, and the love of her life.

Solid evidence One of the most common questions asked of me during the campaign period — during which I was part of the media team of then-candidate Rodrigo Duterte — was how I justified the Davao City mayor’s “program” of violating human rights and killing off criminals. This private message was typical of the questions: “Are you voting for Duterte?

Not wanting any debates and I respect other’s opinions. I can actually see why he’d be a good president except for that one thing… the extra judicial killings he sanctions. What is your take on that, if I may ask? I mean I know each candidate has strengths and weaknesses but this is an endorsement by someone who may be president that goes against human rights and bypasses the law. ’Yan ang hindi ko mareconcile. [That’s what I can’t reconcile].”

Honestly, I wasn’t able to reply to this message — not because I was too busy but because I didn’t think any answer would be satisfactory. After all, it was true that Duterte had been promising to “kill” criminals if he won, even saying that his presidency would be a “bloody” one. These were among the most applauded parts of his campaign speeches, and if

Duterte had spoken those words with tongue firmly planted in his cheek, the people certainly took him seriously.

And having lived in Davao City for 26 years now, I know that killings have happened here for the past two decades. In my own reckoning they started in 1996, right after Duterte said drugs were beginning to flood the city and that something had to be done.

When the victims began falling like flies and human rights groups were criticizing him, Duterte asked: “Where are the bleeding hearts?” He pointed out that no one — not even the families of the victims themselves, all of whom were accessible to the media — was filing a case against him.

And perhaps that’s the bottom line. Duterte has been subjected to investigations over the years but no charges have ever been filed against him. Even Senator Leila de Lima, when she was chair of the Commission on Human Rights (CHR), conducted two investigations right in Davao City but came up empty handed. If it is true that Duterte was behind the killings in Davao, why has he not been brought to court? Not even his harshest critics have ever dug up solid evidence linking the killings directly to him.

*** Now that the Permanent Court of Arbitration has handed down its ruling on the Philippines’ arbitration case with China, the people are asking: What now?

Fortunately we don’t have to second-guess as far as the President is concerned. He gave a glimpse of his plans when he spoke to the graduating class of the Lyceum of the Philippines University in Manila on April 25, 2016 First of all, he will not sacrifice the lives of Filipino soldiers in a war with China, saying it would be a “pure massacre” if they are sent to battle with the superpower.

“We cannot afford to war with China. It would be pure massacre.

We only have two modern jet fighters. We wasted our money on them, hindi natin kailangan ’yan, kasi [we don’t need them because] whom shall we fight with two jets? Arrayed against us in front of the Spratly (Islands) is China with 3,000 MIG fighters. It will be a massacre,” he said.

Duterte also said no matter what the outcome of the arbitration would be, he would be open to talking with China and ask the Chinese to stop talking about ownership and instead talk about trade and commerce. “I will sit down with (China) and talk. We can have a joint exploration. If there is a matter of gas or oil, I will tell them that we can have a joint explanation. If I cannot come up with the hardware because we

cannot afford it, we can provide China with the warm bodies.

But let us agree on a sharing (arrangement),” he added.

Duterte also said if that is not feasible, then he will just ask China to build railways in the Philippines. “I have yet to see third world country rise to progress and development na walang [without a] railway. So I will ask for a railway all around Mindanao, a railway from Manila to Bicol, a railway, a good one, from Manila to Batangas,” he said.

Of course Duterte couldn’t resist being his usual hyperbolic self, so the next day, during the last Presidential debate in Pangasinan, he repeated his stand not to send Philippine troops to war with China, saying he would rather sacrifice himself. “I will ask the Navy to bring me to the nearest boundary, there in the Spratlys, in Scarborough Shoal. I will go down, take a jet ski and bring a Philippine flag to the airport the Chinese built there and then I will plant it. I will say, ‘This is ours and do what you want with me’,” he said.

Decisions, decisions Dear Ate Anna, My girlfriend wants to have a closer relationship with me and I feel pressured to have sex with her. She says, “Everybody’s doing it.” Ate Anna, I am not sure about this relationship and I really don’t know what to do.

Robert Dear Robert, It doesn’t matter how old someone is, most people find that having sex is an important step in a relationship. It’s a question that may come up repeatedly over the course of our lives.

Although popular culture seems to encourage moving quickly, it’s a good idea to slow down a bit and think about what sex means for you and the relationship you have with your partner. There is no rule about how long people should be together before getting sexually involved. As well, just because a person has been sexually active in the past doesn’t mean they have to be sexual at this time or with this person. So, the big question for you is: “How do I know if I’m ready to move to the next level in this relationship?”

People have sex for different reasons, so take some time to know what’s going on for you.

You need to ask yourself why you would want to have sex with this person. Talk to your partner about why they want to have sex. Your bodies might be saying that sex is the next step, but what do your hearts and heads say?

Think carefully about what you believe. Which decision fits best with your personal moral, religious or cultural values?

How would you feel about your decision the next day? If you find that your values conflict with your decision to have sex, then it’s probably not a good idea right now.

You mentioned that you are not sure about this relationship.

Do you like this person? Do you feel safe and comfortable with

them? Can you trust them? It might be tempting to think that “sex is no big deal,” and that might be true for some people, but if it is a big deal for you, consider that in your decision making. Do you and your partner want the same things from sex? Do either of you believe that sex should bring two people closer together – emotionally and physically?

Another thing to consider is protection against sexually transmitted infections and unplanned pregnancy. Can you and your partner talk about birth control and safer sex? What responsibilities will you take on? What if your partner doesn’t want to use condoms? Can you ask your partner to get tested for STI’s? Are you prepared to get tested? Are you ready to deal with an unplanned pregnancy if birth control fails? (It does happen.)

You say you feel pressured to have sex. Ate Anna has said many times in this column that vaginal intercourse is not the only real sex. So, you might be comfortable with certain sexual activities and not with others. How does your

partner feel? No one should pressure another person into doing something sexually that they don’t want to do. When it comes to relationships, everyone has the right to set boundaries and have those boundaries respected.

Robert, you are the only one who can make the right decision for you. Having sex when you are feeling uncomfortable or unsure about it is never the right time – regardless of how long you’ve been with someone. It’s important to feel that you are making choices that enhance your life and your relationships.

Share your opinion on immigration The election last fall is long over but the Liberal government continues to engage Canadians on the question of immigration.

It is rewarding to know that the government no longer relies upon the right wing think tanks for policy positions, but instead, wants to know what we think.

The Liberals promised to bring in 25,000 Syrian refugees and they have met that target. You may not understand Canada’s international responsibility to take in peoples uprooted by war and in danger for their lives, but you cannot fault the Trudeau government for going back on its word, or its election campaign promises. Now, they want to know what we Canadians think about immigration.

From July 5 to August 5, 2016, all Canadians, not only special interest groups or lobby groups, are invited to give feedback to Immigration Refugees and Citizenship Canada (IRCC).

In high school, and later at the Philippine Women’s University in Manila, Linda became friends with daughters of some of the more well-to-do families as well as with popular actors such as Pancho Magalona and Alicia Vergel. Linda recalls she would almost always be the instigator of their escapades.

When she was 17, she suddenly decided to visit an uncle in faraway Zamboanga. There, she met 19-year-old Geronimo “Gerry” Ramos, who would later follow her to Manila. They fell in love. But her parents, especially her mother, were against their relationship because they had someone else in mind for her.

“It was very hard, I had to leave home to be with Gerry,” Linda said. “It took a long time before my mother forgave me and accepted me again. Although she did not fully accepted my husband.”

she married a good man, they decided to immigrate to Canada, with the help of her brother Dr. Arturo Magnaye, an eye doctor.

New life, new challenges It was summer of 1970 when Linda and two of her nine children arrived in Canada. Her husband Gerry had come to the country two months prior. For someone who grew up with helpers for practically everything, Linda felt lost with the challenges they had to face.

“We rented a small room with our two children, a fiveyear old and a two-year old. We didn’t have our own kitchen or bathroom, so we had to share with other residents of the rooming house. We had to adjust to the food, to the weather, to the way things are done in this country.”

Linda remembers working at Safeway and in the garment industry for a month until she got a job at the Canadian National Institute For the Blind (CNIB).

There, she worked as a utility person at first, helping out wherever needed. Linda’s helping nature and care for others got her promoted after 43 days on the job.

the gaps in our demographics and economy; • what Canadian values and traditions are important to share with newcomers to help them integrate into Canadian society?”

These questions are important to both newcomer communities and potential applicants and are reflected in the objectives of our existing Immigration Refugee Protection Act and regulations.

Since the early 1990s Canadian immigration has shifted away from family class to skilled worker immigration. This is your chance to provide some feedback about the shift in emphasis and make recommendations on numbers and classes of immigration.

The second part of the questionnaire has to do with the streamlining or, Modernizing our immigration system. The IRCC wants to be cost effective and maintain a high level or service for users. Respondents will be asked to answer the following: • “currently, immigration levels are planned yearly. Do you agree with the thinking that planning should be multi-year; • what modernization techniques should Canada invest

in for processing of applications; • what should Canada do to ensure its immigration system is modern and efficient; • is there any rationale for providing options to those willing to pay higher fees for an expedited process.”

Do these questions sound familiar? Are you reminded of Express Entry where the lucky few can have permanent residency within six months? Or what about the Super Visa for parents and grandparents whose children or supporters have high incomes? Backlogs for federal skilled workers and parent and grandparent applicants all in the name of new efficient and timely service; should it be one or the other or, in fairness, both? This is your chance to provide balance in the system.

In this world where skepticism and mistrust have taken the place of trust in our elected officials it is time to stand back and trust the government for asking for our opinion. To this point Prime Minister Trudeau has delivered on his promises. We should be wary of the “insurgent populism” of the Brexit vote or Donald Trump’s

hollow promise to “make America great again.” No, we don’t have to break down our immigration programs to make them better, but there are things that can be changed or improved. There is no cost to giving your opinion but there is a greater cost to leave the decision making to those who want to stop immigration altogether.

The opponents, especially of family immigration, have had their say for too long. It is time for the Liberal government to hear from a wider constituency; all Canadians. It is not enough, for persons concerned with immigration issues, to complain over their morning coffee. From page 6 suddenly handed me a different uniform and told me to wear it from now on. It had a name tag showing ‘assistant matron.’ I was really surprised! It was an easier job and it paid more.”

Through hard work, perseverance and by living within their means, they were able to buy their very first house within six months of arriving in Winnipeg – a five-bedroom house on Ruby St. They rented out the upper rooms while the family lived in the basement. After two years, they owned three houses.

“I wanted to show my mother that my husband was my intended partner in life and that he was hard-working and good to his family. I really wanted the silent feud to end.”

After ten children and some few years later, Linda’s mother finally visited, but she still did not speak much to Gerry. Although she did accept the food he prepared for her.

“That really meant a lot,” Linda said.

The creation of Gelyn’s Wedding Lounge Drawing from her high school Home Economics class, Linda happened to bake a cake for some guests that her husband had brought home. They liked the cake, especially one young lady who was soon to be married.

“She asked me if I could bake a wedding cake for her. And I readily said yes!”

From that wedding, and through word of mouth, Linda’s

PILIPINO EXPRESS clientele slowly grew. From simple folks to affluent clients, their parties were not complete without a cake from Gelyn’s Wedding Lounge – the name derived from a combination of “Gerry” and “Linda.”

She got her certificate and license to operate their business with the help of former City Councilor Grant Nordman.

“He helped us purchase the building, with the license, even with the equipment. He told us we have good potential,” said Linda. “He would often visit and chat with us. He became our good friend.”

More than 40 years later, Gelyn’s beautifully made and affordable cakes remain a party favourite. Clients rave about the delicious taste and well-crafted designs.

Although Gelyn’s specializes in wedding cakes, they also offer cakes for all occasions, balloons, invitations, accessories and yes, marriage licenses.

Linda is the only member of the International Cake Exploration Societé (ICES) in Winnipeg. According to their website, members gather to “preserve, advance and encourage exploration of the sugar arts.”

“I attend the yearly convention in Las Vegas for a week, to learn about fresh ideas and new techniques about cake-making.”

Giving back to the community Aside from her love of family, Linda also loves her community. She and Gerry were among the very first members of the Coalition for Stronger Families and for more than 30 See LINDA p10

The worst feng shui bedroom decorating mistakes Next to the front door, the bedroom is the single most important room in the house. The bedroom is where you re-energize your energy each day. Because you spend so much time in the bedroom, the amount of influence it exerts in your life is huge.

That makes it so important that you spend time creating the kind of bedroom that supports your good health, proper rest and your relationship.

Besides being a place of rest, the bedroom is the room that symbolizes your love relationship.

The bedroom should reflect that two people share the room and that they are equals. When a bedroom is poorly arranged or decorated or one partner’s taste is predominant, the couple will be out of balance and that can affect the quality of rest – and romance – that occurs in the bedroom!

Take these tips to heart to help you create a feng shui bedroom that promotes your good health and happy relationships.

The worst feng shui bedroom decorating mistakes: 1. Arranging the bed poorly This is critical for good rest.

When a bed is pushed into a corner of the room, placed under a window or on the same wall as the door, the occupants of the room will be beset with all manner of problems. Think about it: Have you ever been to a hotel where the bed is placed like this? Of course, not. Even hotels know that good bed placement looks good and it sleeps well too!

The bed should always be on a wall where the door can be easily seen. The wall should be solid and there should be two nightstands and two lamps on either side of the bed – just like they have in hotel

rooms, so use that as a guide. Look at your bedroom and make sure it would pass the “hotel room” test.

2. Having a crummy bed An old, broken down mattress, a water bed, or a bed that has no headboard all make for the kind of beds that will keep you broke, tired, frustrated and feeling like you can get a good footing in your life. It’s vital that you have a proper mattress, a good, solid headboard and pleasing bed sheets and linens. These will make you feel comfortable and supported while you sleep, and that will make you feel confident and prepared during the day!

3. Having a crowded bedroom Make sure that your bedroom reflects both partners. It isn’t the place where the pets sleep and it’s also not a place to create the photo gallery of your kids. When a couple’s bedroom becomes the gathering place for photos, kids and pets, the relationship gets pushed to the back of the line, and all those images symbolically “watch you” in your bedroom.

Who wants the kids or grandma looking in on your love life?

Keep the pictures of friends, family and kids in the living area.

If you’re single, make sure that the bedroom reflects two people, if you’re interested in having a long-term relationship. If not, then decorate it however you choose.

Just make sure that your bedroom is only for you two.

4. Using lots of mirrors.

The energy around your bed is important for ensuring proper rest and good energy, but when mirrors reflect your bed, you double the people in the room.

Think about that: if you’re single, that means there’s two

people in the room already, which is not good if you’re looking for someone to love. It’s also not a good idea when you are in a relationship, because it can encourage outsiders in your relationship. But mostly, removing mirrors from your bedroom is a good idea because they are over stimulating and can cause insomnia.

Even if your mirrors are on your closet doors, replace them with regular doors or cover over them with fabric or wallpaper so that you can rest properly at night.

5. Filling it with work objects.

Ensure that your bedroom is a place to retire and be romantic by taking out all the objects that look like work. This means exercise equipment and office items like computers, tablets and desks go elsewhere in the house. Most of us probably have come across unreasonable and difficult people in our lifetime.

There may be difficult family members that some of you live with at home or perhaps you work with an emotionally exhausting co-worker who complains about everything.

In the March 1, 2016 issue, I wrote an article about how not to take things personally.

Essentially, what other people think and do are beyond our control. What we can control, however, is the way we think.

When we take things personally, we give others power over us by influencing our thoughts and allowing us to negatively respond to certain situations.

The workplace is full of different personalities. While you may find most of them are easy to get along with, there will always be one or two people who you may find deliberately annoying.

In my experience of dealing with workplace conflict, the three most common personalities that always come up are, “the complainer,” “the gossip,” and “the bully.”

There are ways to deal with such personalities, but keep in mind that these are general rules of thumb, and may not necessarily apply to a particular situation.

The Complainer These are the Negative Nellies and Debbie Downers in the workplace. Being optimistic

is always an issue for them.

As a result, they bring people down with their expressions of displeasure with the workplace.

Negativity is where they draw their energy. The best way to tackle this personality is to run away from it. Negative thinking is contagious and it spreads like wildfire if you associate long enough with this type of philosophy. Once it consumes you, it will be very difficult not to agree with it. Remember, nothing is more encouraging to a complainer than agreement from another person.

The Gossip These are the attentionseekers in the workplace. They want to have the spotlight on them at all times. In fact, how people get sucked into this is the fact that they may not personally like co-workers who gossip, but they may enjoy listening to some of the stories they have to tell. The problem is that gossips aim to make themselves look interesting through the sharing of personal information of other people. One way to shut a gossip down would be simply not to listen to their stories. You can politely say something like, “I’m not interested in listening to this,” and leave the conversation.

Another way would be to defend people who are not present in the conversation. If you happen to catch them talking about another

The Bully These are the personalities that always have the need to be right. Adult bullies act out for the same reasons that kid bullies do. They are masking their own shortcomings and feelings of insecurity through attacking others. Psychotherapist Jenise Harmon at PsychCentral.com suggests, bullying is not about you. Roger S. Gil, a clinically trained marriage and family therapist, further explains that, “Every bully I’ve counselled has had serious insecurity issues.

Many times it’s because they themselves were mistreated or made to feel inadequate in some way and the easiest way to feel empowered is to pick on someone that they perceive as weaker.”

The most effective way of dealing with a bully, as difficult as it is, would be to stand up to them and respectfully tell them that if the behaviour does not stop, you will see other avenues to resolve the situation (i.e. speaking with a manager or supervisor).

writing my very first song, that’s when I fell in love with singing and developed a passion for it.

Being able to express yourself through your own words and creating music with your guitar was very special for me.

PE: What has been the most memorable part of this competition for you?

RA: The first week I tried out, I didn’t make it through, so I figured I’ll come back the next week and I’ll try again. I didn’t end up making it again. I was pretty down on myself, but Elsaida Alerta contacted me because she saw how much I’ve improved and she made me a wild card. The next memorable moment was being part of the Top Six to represent Manitoba at the Nationals in Calgary. I’ve met a lot of people throughout this competition and I’m very grateful for the Top Six, especially to my friend Deidra Borus who is the host of Limelight Karaoke, and will also represent Manitoba. [Borus and Alerta] helped me throughout the competition and they became my instant best friends.

PE: What are some of the challenges you face in this competition?

RA: Finding time to go down to Limelight and practice my songs in time for the next round of competition. Another challenge was picking the right song that showcased my voice.

By Judianne Jayme Winnipeg singer Robbie Ambrosio is stepping on to the national stage in Calgary as one of the Top Six Manitoba finalists for the Karaoke World Championships (KWC). Last year, former Pilipino Express Pinoy Pop Star champion, Elsaida Alerta, earned the title of World Champion after placing first out of singers from over 30 countries.

The 2015 KWC was held in Singapore, and Alerta performed at the end of June for Winnipeg Symphony Orchestra’s Made in Manitoba series.

This year, Ambrosio is one of six from Winnipeg making their way to compete at the national level, to represent Canada at the Worlds. The other Winnipeggers on the team are Sam Loewen, Deidra Borus, Christine Vetus, Kristopher Traquair, Ashley Romanow, and Tunyia Diane.

Ambrosio recently joined us for an interview.

Pilipino Express: When did you know you had a passion for singing?

Robbie Ambrosio: Growing up in a family with a musical background, it was kind of required (he laughs). I remember when I was younger, I would always sing along to the song Wind Beneath My Wings. Then when I was a bit older I discovered YouTube and would upload covers of songs by my favourite artists, but after

having stage presence. I was told that I needed to connect with my audience a little more. Like I said, if it weren’t for my two “besties” and their coaching and help, I wouldn’t be where I am.

PE: If you could do an entire CD covering only one artist, who would it be and why?

RA: Oh man! This is my favourite question! It would be Mr. Stevie Wonder. I grew up listening to his music; he has so much soul and I can really get into his upbeat songs. I actually sang Signed, Sealed, Delivered for the first semi-finals night. It was a really fun song to sing and it can get an audience going. Stevie Wonder is forever going to be my favourite artist of all time. He’s a very talented man and is such a big influence in the way I sing.

PE: What advice would you have for anyone who might be interested in joining the competition next year?

RA: My advice would be to follow the KWC web site and see where the venue will be for next year. Then, start practicing your songs and make sure you engage your audience. Although it’s a karaoke competition, it really helps to know your song by heart. That way, you can fully perform. Trust me, these are major points with the judges. Always remember to never give up, keep working hard on your craft, and it will help you be consistent! ***

In Hay, Bahay!, Kristine portrays the role of Batch, the loving wife of Yoyo, played by her real-life husband Oyo Boy Sotto.

Ano na ang nangyari sa career ng dalaga? Bakit mukhang binabalagoong na siya sa Dos? Bakit malagihay na ang presensiya niya ngayon sa telebisyon at pelikula?

Kultura Filipino-Canadian – celebrating diversity with our youth

By Judianne Jayme Last month, on the evening of June 13th, 2016, the Manitoba Association of Filipino Teachers, Inc. (MAFTI) hosted the first annual Kultural FilipinoCanadian (KulFilCan), a showcase of melodies, dances, arts and strings in celebration of peace, freedom and health (kapayapaan, kalayaan at kalusugan). The event was held at the Maples Collegiate Students’ Commons and featured local artists while sharing the talents of multicultural students who attended MAFTI’s Filipino Heritage Class after school programs throughout the Winnipeg School Division. This event was also the final event for the always-growing Philippine Heritage Week, organized by the Philippine Heritage Council of Manitoba.

In true educator fashion, the event was hosted primarily by Mr. Nestor Ching and featured his co-hosts Lexy Sapnu (Grade 6, Dufferin School) and AJ Salazar (Grade 7, Hugh John Macdonald School).

Well attended by families, the evening featured a variety of arts, including original theatre,

and multicultural children singing Tagalog songs, poetry recitations and performing traditional Filipino pieces in barongs and other Filipinoinspired outfits. MAFTI President Ernesto Ofiaza Jr. organized performances from the MAFTI Rondalla and the Filipino Heritage Class groups from the following schools: Shaughnessy Park School, Sister McNamara School, Dufferin School (which had the largest multicultural membership of students, Tyndall Park Community School, Sargent Park School, and Lord Nelson School.

There were also performances

by Teatro Filipino Canadian, a dramatic arts and theatre program housed at Maples Collegiate and Daniel McIntyre Collegiate Institute. At the end of the youth program, there was a group performance of the patriotic song Bayan Ko, before the program of guest performers in the community.

The event had run over time and, unfortunately, I could not stay as I had to teach in the morning. But this goes to show that when we truly want to capture a variety of arts that

go beyond the more popular options of singing and dance, it’s challenging to showcase it all into one single event. Perhaps KulFilCan will be a multiple-day celebration in the following years to really highlight and encompass all the arts, including the playing of instruments, original

compositions, poetry recitation (both original and traditional), martial arts, and theatre.

I can’t wait for what the future has in store for this event. It was endearing to see how our culture is being shared and celebrated by a new generation, and by a wider audience. One takeaway

as I reflect on this a month later is the enjoyment on the students’ faces as they put their own styles, twists and personalities into their interpretations of Filipino traditions. As their event hashtag celebrates: #TraditionLivesOn. Congratulations, MAFTI. Photos by Henry Balanial

Hindi naging maganda ang pagtanggap ng mga kababayan natin sa lumabas na video nila ng kaniyang misis na si Joey Mead na ipinakikita silang napakasarap na naghahalikan.

Balak kong tumakbo sa Point Douglas Noong nagpasya akong tumakbo na nagkataong panahon ng eleksiyon sa Manitoba at Pilipinas ay marami ang nagtanong kung tatakbo daw ako sa politika.

May mga kaibigan din akong nasa Taguig ang nagtanong kung uuwi daw ba ako sa Pilipinas para tumakbo sa Taguig. Sinadya kong maging creative ang opisyal kong pagpapahayag ng aking plano para tumakbo sa pamamagitan ng Batang North End at ng aking mga posts sa Facebook. At siyempre, tulad ng aking inaasahan, marami ang nagtanong, marami ang nagtaas ang kilay at marami din siguro ang nag-abang kung totoo nga ang aking pagtakbo. At tulad ng aking sinabi at sinulat, tinotoo ko ang aking pagtakbo sa Tyndall Park.

Sa Tyndall Park area ginanap ang Freedom Run ng St. Peter’s Church. Ito ang kauna-unahan kong 10k run sa buong buhay ko. Sa simbahan ko unang inialay ang aking unang takbo.

Ito ay isang fund raising para sa pagpapatayo ng bagong simbahan para sa lumalaking parishioners ng St. Peter’s Church. Masarap ang feeling na tumakbo para sa komunidad ng simbahan. Sa susunod na mga taon ay asahan ninyo ang aking pagtakbong muli sa Tyndall Park area. Malay ninyo, hindi lang 10k run ang takbuhin ko para sa aking mahal na komunidad sa Tyndall. Abangan ninyo ang opisyal kong pahayag at filing ko ng registration para sa aking pagtakbo sa Tyndall area na sakop ng Point Douglas.

Ang pangalawa kong takbo ay noong Mayo para naman ito sa kampanya para sa awareness at paglunas sa diabetes. Sa Assiniboine Park ito ginanap at kasama ko dito ang mga pamangkin at running buddies ko na sina Gideon Gatpayat, Mariecarl Nues, at Janos Saluta. Kung kailan ako tumanda ay ngayon pa ako na-hooked sa pagtakbo kaya’t kapag kasama ko ang mga binata’t dalagang ito ay nagmimistulan akong Ama nilang tatlo dahil sa puti ng buhok ko. Pero ayos lang, masayang tumakbo nang may kabuluhan. Sa aking pangalawang takbong ito na tinawag na Lace Up for Diabetes ay natanggap ko ang aking kauna-unahang finisher medal. Wow! Iba ang feeling. Para akong valedictorian kahit hindi naman.

Ang pangatlo kong takbo ay nitong Hunyo para naman sa Huntington’s disease, isang uri ng sakit sa isip. Dito ko nakasamang tumakbo ang mga pamilya, supporters at mismong mga pasyente na may ganitong uri ng karamdaman. Nakaka-touch na makitakbo kasama sila. Dito ko lalung na-realize ang kahalagahan ng kalusugan ng katawan at pagiisip. Dito ko naisip na marami talaga tayong dapat ipagpasalamat

at ipagdiwang sa araw-araw ng ating buhay. Kaya’t ituloy lang natin ang pagtakbo. Samahan ninyo ako. Sabay tayong tumakbo.

Noong Father’s Day ay isang pinaka-the-best na regalo ang aking natanggap mula sa aking panganay na anak na si Freedom.

Sabay kaming tumakbo ng 10k para sa 38th Manitoba Marathon.

Bagama’t alam kong hindi niya hilig ang pagtakbo ay sinamahan niya ako at sabay naming tinapos ang takbo. Dama ko ang kaniyang hirap sa pagtakbo pero hindi siya sumuko. Ipinakita niya sa akin na kaya niya. Isang saludo para sa aking panganay at thank you sa iyong pagiging mabuting anak at pagiging mabuting tao at pagiging alagad ng sining. Si Freedom ay isang songwriter. Para kay Freedom, kay Franco, Francis at sa aking asawa na si Manang Gee ang aking tinakbo noong Father’s Day. Hindi pa po tapos dahil patuloy ang aking pagtakbo. Sa July 31 ay tatakbo ako ng 16k mula Winnipeg Beach papuntang Gimli. Ito ay isang araw bago ang pagdiriwang ng Terry Fox Day. Alam naman nating lahat ang kabayanihan ni Terry para sa cancer research sa pamamagitan ng pagtakbo niya sa kabila ng pagiging putol ang isang paa at binti. Para sa ipinaglaban at itinaguyod ni Terry ang takbo kong ito sa July 31.

Marami pa akong naka-lineup na takbo ngayong taong ito.

Hahaba nang husto ang aking article kapag inisa-isa ko pa.

Ang pagtakbo ko ay para sa kalusugan. Ang pagtakbo ko ay simbolo ng aking pakikiisa sa ating komunidad. Ang pagtakbo ko ay bahagi ng aking patuloy na pag-aaral at pagyakap sa iba’t ibang kultura at kalinangan. Ang pagtakbo ko ay para isulong ang masaya, mapayapa at nagmamahalang komunidad. Ang
