Silent night Joy to the world the Lord is gone Berting, berting, berting!

The first time I heard this in Davao City I had a good laugh. It was sung by a group of children out on a night of carolling and I had to strain to make out the rest of the words. It sounded like, “In eber eber hart In eber eber room In eber watusi In eber watusi In eber, in eber in watusi!”

It brought me back to the time when I was a kid and my older brother and I would go carolling with some neighbourhood kids.

One particular night stands out in my mind: We had just sung a song and the homeowner had generously given us some coins.

The usual response was, “Thank you, thank you, ang babait ninyo (you are so nice), thank you!” but for some reason I sang “ang babarat ninyo (you are so stingy).” I had a good scolding from my brother after that.

But it was the same brother who taught me the “lyrics” to Rudolph the Red-Nosed Reindeer: Rudolph the red-nosed raindrop Had a very shiny shoe And if you ever sausage You will even say itlog…

If you think only Filipinos mishear Christmas songs, think again. Apparently even Englishspeaking folks make mistakes like these: Olive, the other reindeer, used to laugh and call him names…

He’s makin’ a list of chicken and rice…

Get dressed, ye married gentlemen… *** Christmas was always a silent holiday for me when I was growing up. In Manila, the weeks leading up to December 25 were always quiet… well, save for the carollers (especially those who brought an entire marching band with them). But all in all, the holidays were always a pleasant time. The firecrackers normally started on the day after Christmas, and would last into New Year’s Eve (and sometimes beyond).

So it came as a surprise to me when I moved to Davao City that here, the tradition was to explode firecrackers on Christmas Eve. I remember the feeling of disconcertment and dissonance because there the locals were, singing Silent Night but lighting up rebentadors, rockets, Judas belts, and all sorts of pyrotechnics. It felt like their preferred version of the song was Simon and Garfunkel’s Silent Night/7 O’clock News, minus the explosions, but chilling nonetheless. For someone like me who hated the sound of firecrackers, it made for a rather unpleasant holiday.

But then 911 terror attacks happened in New York, and in its aftermath then-Mayor Rodrigo Duterte banned the use of pyrotechnics in the city. He reasoned that it was easy for terrorists to mount an attack because the holiday noise would mask their guns and explosives, and they could quickly overrun the city. The announcement was initially met with opposition, but being mostly good citizens the

Dabawenyos obeyed the order and we celebrated our first silent Christmas on December 25, 2001.

For me it was a welcome respite. After nine years, we finally had a Christmas that I was used to. I think Dabawenyos didn’t know what to do on that first silent night; for my family’s part, we went out of our gate to greet the neighbours. But more than just a quiet holiday, the firecracker ban earned for the city a casualty count of zero, down from the usual one hundred or so each year. It became so successful that the City Council decided to make the firecracker ban a law.

Now the situation is reversed.

I understand that in the years since I left, Metro Manilans have turned Christmas Eve into a firecracker fest — complete with the annual casualty parade in hospital emergency rooms. It’s been such a long time since I spent Christmas there, but I think if I did, I would be sorely disappointed at what had become of my favourite holiday.

Unfortunately President Duterte has deferred an initial decision to ban firecrackers in the entire country, but hopefully this will still push through in the coming year.

For now I relish the fact that at least here in Davao City, we will be having a Silent Night on December 25.

Helping people to understand Dear Ate Anna, I just found out that my cousin who still lives in the Philippines is HIV+. I am saddened by the comments I hear from some of my family members. I know that I will talk to many of these people over the Christmas season. What can I say when they make negative comments?

Malina Dear Malina, What you are describing is HIV related stigma – a process of taking away a person’s value because they are HIV+. This type of stigma shows up in people’s attitudes, beliefs or comments directly to or about someone who is HIV+.

Sadly, HIV stigma can result in people being shunned by their family or community. For example, being asked not to come to a family wedding (or a Christmas gathering) because other people might not attend.

People also internalize stigma.

For example, a mother who is HIV+ chooses to breastfeed her newborn (although this could transmit the virus to her baby) even when free formula is available to her. Why? Because she worries people will find out about her HIV status and is

afraid she will be kicked out of the family and rejected by her community.

In the bigger picture, HIV stigma and discrimination can contribute to poor care and services in healthcare and education settings. It also causes psychological damage that can affect a person’s ability or willingness to follow their treatment plan.

The roots of HIV stigma are deep and confronting it means talking about things that may make others uncomfortable.

Many people do not really know where their attitudes come from. We do know that many people are needlessly afraid of becoming infected because they don’t have correct information about how HIV is transmitted.

They worry that they can become infected through social contact – touching, hugging, shaking hands, using the same dishes as the person who is infected etc.

HIV is a fragile virus and is not transmitted in these ways.

Taboos about sex, religious beliefs, or moral judgments about a person’s sexual behaviour contribute to stigma, as well.

And yet, what do we really know about any one person’s story?

Women who are HIV+ face a

greater degree of stigma and shame. They are judged by the stereotype that a woman who has a sexually transmitted infection is cheating on her husband or a prostitute. Yet what power do most women have in their relationships to say “No – no sex unless we use a condom,” even if they suspect their husband is having sex outside the marriage.

The main causes of stigma relate to incomplete knowledge, fears of death and disease, sexual norms and people not recognizing their actions as stigma. Malina,

educate yourself about HIV transmission so that you can give correct information to people who stigmatize out of ignorance.

This may not be enough to change someone’s attitude, but it is a place to start.

By engaging in conversations with your family members, you will be able to identify what their information needs are. Asking about their fears can guide you in having these conversations.

There is a common attitude that the person who is HIV+ did something to deserve it and

their behaviour is immoral.

Family members who want to support your cousin will need to re-evaluate their beliefs and be prepared to disagree with other family members who are not willing to change their attitude.

In the past HIV prevention campaigns often featured pictures of a person on their deathbed and these images may be what people remember. Remind people that treatment is available in many countries. While there is no cure, HIV is a chronic condition See ANNA p9

IRCC warning about basic residency Immigration, Refugees and Citizenship Canada (IRCC) is starting to take notice of the large numbers of permanent residents who fail to meet the basic residency requirements of 730 days during the five-year life of their permanent resident cards (PRC). The department has embarked on a public awareness program to let card holders know about this issue. There are permanent residents abroad with expired PRC cards who know or don’t know that they face admission problems when they return to Canada. There are others inside Canada who are applying to have their PRC extended but fail to meet the basic residency because of time they spent outside the country. Residency is a serious matter and, yes, you must ensure that you have resided inside Canada for at least two years in this period or that you have the potential, upon re-entry, to meet the basic residency within the five-year validity period of your card. The requirement is

set forth in the Immigration and Refugee Protection Act (IRPA), “a permanent resident complies with the residency obligation with respect to a five-year period if, on each of a total of at least 730 days in that five-year period,” – IRPA s. 28 (2)(a). If you do not meet this requirement you may have become inadmissible to Canada.

Many permanent residents are now receiving notifications reminding them, “You must present your valid Permanent Resident Card (PR Card) or permanent resident travel document (PRTD) when boarding a flight to Canada.” Persons who do not have a valid PR card or PRTD can be denied admission to Canada at a port of entry. The federal government is giving permanent resident cardholders additional warning to ensure that they comply with requirements.

The warning is especially urgent for those inside Canada with expired PR cards who want to renew their PR cards or for those abroad with an expired PR card

Wear white with gold for an extra dose of attention-getting power for money and prestige.

New beginnings What is it that you would like to do – or do over? This is the year you can take a fresh start at something you’ve had your heart

For those inside the country, it is important to understand that even though you may have been outside of Canada for a significant part of the five-year life of your PR card, the IRCC will determine residency by dating back from the date you submit your application for PR renewal. In other words, if you do not meet the basic residency, then wait until you have re-established your 730 days of residency before submitting the application. The reference to the law: “if they have been a permanent resident for five years or more, that they have met the residency obligation in respect of the five-year period immediately before the examination;” IRPA s. 28 (2)(a)(ii). Those who fail to demonstrate that they have met the residency requirement could then become subject to an admissibility hearing.

The situation for permanent residents outside the country is not so readily addressed. First

they must ensure that upon return to Canada they have the potential to meet the 730-day residency requirement. Or, if the PR card has expired, apply for a PRTD before trying to re-enter the country.

The issuance of the PRTD is not straightforward, especially for those who have not been inside Canada for the previous calendar year. If you are denied a PRTD from outside the country because of the failure to meet the basic residency of section 28, you may have to apply to the Immigration Appeal Division (IAD) in order to return to Canada and attend an admissibility hearing.

The warnings being issued

by IRCC should be taken seriously because there are too many permanent residents who confidently travel abroad unaware that their PR card is expiring or that they may have problems getting back into Canada. This does not mean that IRCC or the CBSA authorities do not consider humanitarian and compassionate explanations, but the problem or the challenge itself could have

been avoided if the permanent resident had been more attentive to expiration dates. Ignorance of the law is not an excuse before immigration authorities. The government of Canada is going to additional steps to warn all PR cardholders of their responsibility to ensure that they meet the 730-day residency. Permanent residents can be stripped of their landed status if they do not meet the basic residency requirement.

One man said, “It’s not HIV that kills you. It’s the stigma and discrimination from society, the rejection that makes people go into depression and stop taking their medication – stop taking care of their health. That is when they get sick.”

Ask your family members: “How would you feel if you were stigmatized because of a health condition? If you were not invited to people’s homes because you had diabetes.” This might help people develop empathy for your cousin and other people who have been infected with the virus.

Ate Anna thinks that eliminating stigma is a very important part of the fight against HIV/AIDS. If the person with HIV is strong enough to live with that burden, we should be strong enough to help them carry it.

December 1st was World AIDS Day. But any day of the year is a good time to start a conversation with someone and help to reduce HIV stigma.

From page 8 but it shares a wall with the shower and commode (bad). I also awoke the other night to hear the shower having some sort of backwash issue with intermittent dripping water. I know I need to address that ASAP. But what do I do about the wall? The wall it’s on now really is the most logical place - the only other option is to rotate it so that the headboard is up again a row of tall windows, which would be awkward appearing, and I think my husband would strongly protest.

I tried pulling the bed away from the wall and angling it a bit - and the very next day we did get two small financial improvements. So I want to figure this out and get some bigger improvements going!

Answer: Sometimes the bedroom just works against you, either from too many doors, windows, or simply size. Having the bed against a shared wall with a bathroom is draining for your finances and your health. Hearing the water while you’re in bed is even worse. And actually dangerous for your health

and well being.

The fact that you moved it and saw an improvement tells you that! That was going to be my recommendation. It’s always best to have your bed against a solid wall, but in this case, you can see what it’s doing to your money.

Otherwise, you can try hanging a green or brown curtain behind the bed. This represents wood that “absorbs” the water, or you can hang a beige or yellow curtain to “dam” the water and protect you.

The beige is my favourite, but you may need to choose based on your home’s configuration, which I don’t know about. On the whole, though, I would recommend angling the bed so that you don’t have water behind you.

Tell me about yourself – shaping identity I adore meeting new people – they always come with a new set of lessons, as long as you make the conscious choice to see it this way. The more that I am approached by others for collaboration, workshops, and personal/professional development, the more I become intrigued when I ask this question.

“Tell me about yourself,” I’ll ask anyone I’m meeting for the first time.

On average, about eight out of 10 people will answer me by telling me their occupation.

“Well, I’m a nurse specializing

in…” “I’ve been a teacher for the past number of years…”

“Sure, I’m an engineer working at…” “I’m a retired lawyer who practiced in…” I, myself, was guilty of this response up until a few years ago.

As adults, this is perhaps something we are naturally inclined to do. The reason this intrigues me is how different it is from when I ask students the same question. By students, I’m not only referring to my sixth graders, but I’m also speaking about the various youth that I am working with on different

projects – and I have asked this to plenty of mature high schoollevel youth – interestingly with the same results as I get from my elementary students.

When I ask students, they tell me that they are a brother/ sister, they tell me what they are interested in, or what their favourite foods, colours, or activities are. They tell me what matters to them at their core self, at this point in their lives.

Sure, we can chalk this up to the fact that, as adults, our lives are now built into the routine of responsibilities and work, and with work being at the forefront, we identify most with what we do for a living. But is that

really primarily who we are, or is it simply what we do? More important, isn’t it only what we do to earn money?

I’ve challenged myself and my students to see each other as humans first; humans with a unique set of skills, life experiences and understanding.

This core idea encourages empathy and sincerely getting to know a person. I also encourage them to learn about tolerance; that we don’t all have to agree, but we should be respectful of each other’s differences.

Parent Tip: How do you see yourself?

I challenge parents this week to ask your children this question

and hear what they have to say about themselves. We often ask fleeting circumstantial questions about each other’s days – which is still important, of course – but take time to hear what your children have to say about themselves.

Now practice this for yourself.

Tell me about you! Who are you as a person, beyond your career?

What matters most? Know yourself and live everyday as your true self. See the difference it makes in your life. Have a great month, everyone!

DMCI volleyball teams retain city title

By Ana Daniella Ilagan Three of Daniel McIntyre Collegiate Institute’s (DMCI) volleyball teams won the interdivision championships held recently at Sisler High School, and will go on to compete in the provincial championships. The Junior Varsity (JV) Boys and JV Girls played on November 10, while the Varsity boys’ played on November 17.

This year marks the 11th consecutive win in the city championships for the JV Boys’ volleyball team. The team, comprised of Grade 10 players, –nine out of thirteen of whom are Filipinos – won the final game against Sisler in two sets, qualifying them for this year’s provincial competition. After a hard-fought battle, the team ended up finishing the year tied for 5th place in the province.

Daniel Gilbert, who is a new coach for the team, experienced his first win with the new batch of players for 2016/17. One player mentioned that most of the team members acquired their passion for volleyball at Sargent Park School (SPS), although they did not win any championship games during their time there. They mentioned, however, that the Grade 8 team that beat them in middle school was the same team they beat in the city championships this time around, which was a relief on their part.

Kiel Guico, the team’s setter, mentioned that their team looks up to their seniors, the varsity boys volleyball team. Karl Sagun, the team’s power, added that “they’re good” and that the JV team “always watches [the varsity boys] play.”

Guico also hopes, along with his teammates, that they’re going to snatch the title again in 2017.

He added, “[We’re going to] work hard to win next year.” They also plan to follow Coach Gilbert’s advice to “Swag it out.”

The JV girls, brought back the title to DMCI after more than five years in their final game against Tec Voc. Their league record in the city championships was 12 wins and one loss, while their season record was 34 wins and six losses. In the provincial finals, they finished second in their pool, defeating Dakota and Steinbach.

For the three years that the Varsity Boys’ team has been part of DMCI Maroons volleyball, they have earned two wins in the city championships. Similar to the JV boys and girls, most of the varsity boys had their first try at volleyball at Sargent Park School, which basically influenced them to be physically active. Now that they are at DMCI, things are a little more serious.

Some mention that they lose sleep due to practicing everyday.

Some also mention that they lose time for academics. The demand is quite heavy since the varsity boys are also a part of the graduating class of 2016 - 2017. However, it’s just a matter of sacrifice, as a team member mentioned.

Moreover, the team also names Ms Ruby, a Grade 11 Biology teacher and volleyball coach, as one of their inspirations in playing volleyball. “She’s a big part of the volleyball teams at DMCI,” said Reymel Eusebio.

This year, one of the Varsity Boys’ top players, Marco Aviles, a Filipino, was included in the 2016 graduating all-star team.

It comprises of the 26 best graduating athletes of the 2016 2017 volleyball season.

Aviles comments, “Everything we do is because of the love of the game. All the sacrifices, all the sleep that we lost is because we love the game, and we sacrifice everything to play.”

Hindi siya naparito bilang isang sanggol lamang na mahina at walang kayang gawin sa ating buhay. Hindi siya nanatiling isang sanggol na nakalampin at umiiyak kapag may kailangan.

Sa biblia, mababasa natin ang sinabi ni propetang Isaias ukol sa sanggol na si Hesus, “Sapagkat ipanganganak ang isang sanggol na lalaki at siya ang mamamahala sa atin. Kaya rin niyang magbago ng buhay at magligtas sa ating kaluluwa. Ang sanggol na Hesus rin ang Walang hanggang Ama. Tulad ng isang pastol na nagpapakain, nangangalaga, at nagbibigay ng lahat ng kailangan ng kaniyang mga tupa, gayundin ang Diyos sa tao.

Ang sanggol na si Hesus rin ang Prinsipe ng Kapayapaan na nagbibigay katahimikan sa ating pag-iisip at puso kahit na sa panahon ng krisis o pagsubok dahil hawak niya ang buhay natin.

Kapag summer, nasa bahay bakasyunan niya sa Balmoral si Queen Victoria ng England.

Naglalakad siya sa malawak na damuhan at nagsusuot siya ng mga simpleng damit para hindi siya makilala ng mga tao. Isang araw, nagsimulang umulan kaya’t tumakbo siya sa isang cottage para may masilungan. Tinanong niya ang isang matandang babae roon kung puwede siyang makahiram ng payong para makauwi siya.

The training is five weeks long. It runs Monday to Friday with classes from 9:00 AM – 4:00 PM daily. Community training hours are early morning, afternoon and late evening.

He has performed with the prestigious Philippine Orchestra, the Winnipeg Symphony Orchestra and UM Orchestra. He is also the band leader and arranger for the Winnipeg band, Aftertouch.

Anita Lubosch toured extensively across Canada singing lead vocals and playing guitar and keyboards in professional rock bands. She is now a sound editor and composer for film and television with a professional certification in Composing and Orchestrating for Film and TV with Berklee College of Music in Boston.

Jon Malek played bass in the University of Manitoba jazz band.

He also plays guitar with a variety of bands.

Anne Caprice Claros is a poet who plays multiple woodwind instruments including flute and tenor saxophone. She also plays bagpipes with 402 squadron of the Royal Canadian Air Force.

Ayen Dandan Zamora comes from a musical family. She is cohost of Pinoy Saturday Night on CKJS Radio with her husband Maui Zamora. Together they operate MP Studium Photography & Music Production. She has also played a large part in organizing and hosting contests such as CKJS Tuklas Talino and Pinoy Pop Star.

Michel Majul-Ibarra, the chairperson of the panel of judges, studied voice in the Philippines with May Bayot, the elder sister of acclaimed singer Lani Misalucha. She also took voice lessons in Canada through the Royal Conservatory of Music, completing a series of theoretical exams and singing exams in various styles such as Italian, German, French, Russian and contemporary music. She scored the Conservatory’s highest mark in Manitoba in one of her voice exams. Majul-Ibarra was also the Tuklas Talino Grand Champion in 1997. Aside from performing with the Gilbert and Sullivan Society and for events such as the Pan Am Games, the World Beat Festival, and Folklorama, she has taught voice lessons for many years, and worked as the Voice Program Director with Keyboard Ventures Music School in Winnipeg.

Pilipino Express publishers Emmie Joaquin, Paul Morrow, Rey-ar Reyes, and partners Voltaire Ronatay and Kelly Legaspi of 71 Lab Rats Events and Productions thank the judges for sharing the their time and effort, and for applying their valuable experience and knowledge to determine the winners of Pinoy Pop Star Season 3.

Thanks also to: emcee Lucille Nolasco – for wrangling a lot of information while keeping the show running smoothly; sound engineer Maui Zamora and house manager/lighting director Adrian Enns – for overcoming early technical difficulties to deliver a technically flawless show; and accountant Imelda dela Cruz – for setting up the software and calculating of the overall scores.

Next year, Jollibee is expecting to open a second location in Winnipeg in the Northgate Shopping Centre and two locations in Ontario – in Scarborough and Mississauga.

Additionally, the company is looking to expand further and is hoping to establish locations in Edmonton and Vancouver in 2018.

Dela Cruz emphasized Jollibee’s intention to remain local. “As we expand, we want all of our supplies to come from within.” Currently, the company imports items from the United States but is in the process of finding local suppliers.

Nonetheless, certain items will continuously be imported from the Philippines. These include the “secret” spice they use to flavour their much-loved Jolly Crispy Chicken and their Peach Mango Pie. To this, Dela Cruz comments, “Where else can you get Philippine mangoes?”
