Four for Manitoba High-profile Filipino-Canadians vie for Legislature seats

MANITOBA – By day’s end on Tuesday, April 19, we shall find out if the voters elect at least three of the Filipino-Canadians seeking seats in the provincial legislature.

While there have been quite a number of Filipino-Canadians in the past provincial elections who have got their names on the ballot, this may be the first time in the Filipino community’s history where the Pinoy candidates are all relatively popular among their target constituents. Their celebrity may be attributed to their various high-profile community projects that were publicised not only by traditional media but also by the strength of the respective candidates’ penchant to maximize the use of social media.

Four high-profile Pinoy candidates represent the three major parties.

WINNIPEG – It was a full house at the Philippine Canadian Centre of Manitoba (PCCM) as local spectators watched on a big screen how Filipino boxing great Manny Pacquiao punched his way to clear a unanimous decision win over Tim Bradley Jr. at the MGM Grand Garden Arena in Las Vegas on April 9, 2016.

Unlike Pacquiao’s previous fights, this last fight versus Bradley was not as celebrated by fans around the world. According to reports from ESPN, the ticket sales and pay-per-view were relatively low. The pre-fight fanfare was not as noisy. Even Pacman’s long-time Hollywood fans, i.e. Jimmy Kimmel, Mark Wahlberg, Sylvester Stallone, Keanu Reeves and other luminaries) were not among the arena crowd of 14,665 who cheered as the two fighters completed their trilogy of fights. “Who am I going to shoot?”

In his recent campaign sorties, presidential candidate Rodrigo Duterte has been emphasizing the importance of resolving the conflict in Mindanao. Most people do not know that the Davao City mayor has Moro roots: his mother, the late Soledad Duterte, was a Maranao, and his son, current vice mayor Paolo Duterte, is married to a Muslim.

He personally has much at stake in achieving peace for Mindanao, but unfortunately the Aquino administration has botched its one chance to win it when it failed to pass the Bangsamoro Basic Law (BBL), which had promised to give greater autonomy to the Moro people (as represented by the Moro Islamic Liberation Front). As it turns out, Duterte says, the government has been playing Mindanao all along: it merely began the process but intended to pass it on to the next administration to complete.

“Parang basketbol lang, dinribol ang bola pero ipapasa lang pala sa iba. (It was like a game of basketball; they just dribbled the ball but are now passing it on to others),” he says.

“Iniwan nila kami ng malaking problema. (They left us with a big problem),” Duterte says. The Moro Islamic Liberation

Front is becoming agitated, and if the Moro people continue to be ignored, war will again explode in Mindanao. He cites President Benigno Aquino who has said that if Congress fails to pass the BBL, “you might as well get the body bags ready.” Given that grim scenario, he says he had had to meet with the leadership “to calm down first.” When I become President, he says, we will talk.

Duterte has always put forward federalism as the answer to the country’s ills, saying it is the best alternative to the BBL and has the advantage of addressing not just the Moro people’s grievances but everybody else’s.

Under the current system, a local government unit’s taxes first go to the national government (LGU), which makes the decisions as to where the money would be used.

It also sets aside an amount that would be sent back to the LGU, but it is usually so small that there is not enough to develop the area. In the case of Davao City, Duterte says it gives an average of one billion pesos a week to the national coffers. In return the city receives an average of 20 billion pesos. “How am I supposed to develop our city with that?” he complains.

This, Duterte says, is one of

the biggest causes of the problems in Mindanao. There is no money to develop the area, and this drives the poverty-stricken people to rebellion. And since he himself is of “mixed blood” (his own term), he does not know what would happen if war breaks out.

“Who am I going to shoot? The Moros? The Christians?” *** One of the hallmarks of Duterte’s campaign is his promise to solve the drug problem in six months. Most people cheer, but some have questioned his ability to do it. But in some of his sorties he has indicated how he intends to keep his promise: go directly to the source: the New Bilibid Prison (NBP) in Muntinlupa. In a campaign rally in Angeles City, Pampanga last month, Duterte said a large percentage of the drugs circulating in the country are actually controlled by drug lords who are detained in the NBP. “The police arrest these drug lords but if they are convicted and imprisoned, what do they do? They cook shabu (methamphetamine hydrochloride) inside (the NBP),” he said. The detained drug lords still manage to control the illegal drug industry in the country because they have smuggled mobile phones and other communication tools inside the NBP.

Duterte said government has been unable to control the activities of drug lords, who have virtually taken control of the NBP. He pointed out that recent raids in the NBP have yielded drugs, high-powered firearms, expensive wristwatches, and even jacuzzis.

He said drug lords are using these in cahoots with prison guards who are paid to look the other way.

Duterte joked that if he becomes President, he would order fire trucks to douse the NBP not with water but with gasoline and then burn the entire facility.

Turning serious, the mayor scored the Aquino administration for failing to address the problem at the NBP, saying former Justice Secretary Leila de Lima herself barely scratched the surface when she conducted a raid on the NBP in 2014.

He also recalled that de Lima herself had admitted that the inmates at the NBP control the narcotics industry in the country.

Duterte vowed that if he becomes President, he would clean up the NBP and in so doing solve the drug problem in the entire country. “I cannot promise to totally get rid of drugs, but I will suppress it,” he said.

The eTA is now in force In the fall of 2015 I wrote an article about the implementation of the Electronic Travel Authorization (see Pilipino Express, October 15, 2015). The eTA has now come into force and travelers to Canada should be aware of whether or not they require it. Who requires an eTA and how do you apply for one?

As of March 15, 2016, visa-exempt foreign nationals are expected to possess an Electronic Travel Authorization (eTA) to fly to or transit through Canada. The exemption is for US citizens, and travelers with a valid Canadian visa, along with other classes of travelers such as designated foreign diplomats, French citizens of St. Pierre and Miquelon, commercial aircrews etc. Travelers from visa-required

countries, such as the Philippines, must have a valid Temporary Resident Visa (TRV) in order to enter Canada. In other words, foreign nationals from visa exempt countries, such as Korea, Germany, the UK, and Israel all must apply in advance for the eTA. Canadians citizens and permanent residents, for those who wonder, do not require an eTA, but would use a valid Canadian passport or permanent resident card for admission to the country.

In terms of the eTA application process, you apply online. Applicants must have a valid passport, a credit card (Visa, MasterCard, American Express, or a pre-paid Visa, MasterCard or American Express), and an e-mail address. It costs $7.00 CAD to obtain the eTA and only takes a

few minutes to complete. The approved eTA is valid up to five years.

CBSA border officials will exercise some flexibility for the current operating year. The federal web site notes that from March 15, 2016 until fall 2016 (date not specified), travelers who do not have an eTA can board their flight to or through Canada as long as they possess the appropriate travel documents, such as a valid passport. CBSA authorities can let travelers into the country without the eTA as long as they meet the other requirements to enter Canada.

If you, your family members, friends, or business associates are planning on traveling to Canada this year, then be aware of the eTA. It is something quite new and is a requirement for foreign nationals to come from visa

exempt countries. These visitors comprised roughly 74 per cent of those who arrive by air, even without including US visitors.

The new rule of thumb is that foreign visitors, excluding US citizens and a few other excluded persons, will now require an eTA. At least this is not another requirement for Philippines citizens. It is intended to make admission a more seamless, quick process for visa exempt travelers.

Let’s wait and see if it works in practice.

Shopping for condoms?

Dear Ate Anna, My partner and I want to use condoms for protection but I am really embarrassed when I actually have to buy the condoms. The other day, I just quickly grabbed a box without looking at it properly and I got the wrong kind. The condoms feel like they are too big. Ate Anna, aren’t condoms “one-size-fits-all?”

Rick Dear Rick, Condoms come in different sizes and shapes but most condoms fit men whose erect penis is of the average size. Some condoms have a slightly smaller width to give a tighter fit, while others are slightly larger. Labels such as “snugger fitted,” “form-fitted” or “large” are displayed on the condom package.

A well-fitted condom should feel snug but comfortable. Condoms that are too large or too loose can slip off during sex.

Different brands also list different descriptive terms such as “ultra sensitive,” “ultra thin,” “extra strength,” “enhanced pleasure,” “ribbed,” “studded,” etc. Some people prefer thinner condoms or condoms with texture that may provide more sensation.

Others prefer thicker condoms to feel more secure. Condoms also come in a variety of colours.

Rick, you might want to try different brands and types to see which ones you and your partner like the most. No matter what your personal preference, use only “lubricated” latex or polyurethane condoms. Polyurethane condoms are the best choice for people who are allergic to latex. Both types of condoms will give you protection against unplanned pregnancy as well as many sexually transmitted infections, including HIV. Remember, a condom is effective only if you use it every time you have sex and use it correctly.

Carefully read the instructions that come in the package. Also remember that condoms cannot be reused. A good idea for first time users is to practise using a condom before they actually need it.

It’s important to put the condom on before you have sexual contact with your partner. The condom should unroll smoothly and easily.

If you have to struggle or it takes more than a few seconds, you could be trying to put the condom on inside out. Take it off and start again with a new condom. (Don’t try to roll it back up and re-use it.)

When you purchase condoms, take note of the expiry date on the package. If the package is close to its expiry date, do not buy it because latex gets old and this increases the risk of the condom breaking. As well, open the condom

wrapper with care; do not use teeth or scissors as they can accidentally tear the condom. If a condom looks dry, stiff, sticky, or smells funny, throw it in the garbage.

To increase sensation for you, put a small amount of waterbased lubricant such as KY Jelly or Astroglide on the inside of the condom before unrolling it. To increase comfort for your partner and also reduce the chance of the condom breaking, add some waterbased lubricant on the outside of the condom, as well. Never use oilbased lubricants like Vaseline, body lotion, or baby oil with a condom as these substances break down the latex and increase the risk of condom breakage. Also, condoms should be stored in a cool, dry place. Do not put condoms in your back pocket or in the car’s glove compartment as heat or freezing can damage condoms.

You may notice that some condoms are labeled as having “spermicide” or “spermicidal lubricant.” The lubricant on these condoms contains a chemical called Nonoxynol 9, which can reduce sperm mobility and prevent pregnancy. Research shows that Nonoxynol 9 may kill HIV. However, if a person has an

allergic reaction to this chemical, it can cause irritation or small sores.

Infectious disease experts say frequent use of contraceptives that contain this chemical may increase the likelihood of viruses (like HIV) getting inside the body.

Flavoured condoms (eg. grape, mint, chocolate etc.) are designed for oral sex but are not recommended for vaginal sex or anal sex as they are coated with sugar and corn syrup. They can change the pH balance of the vagina, creating an environment that encourages vaginal infections.

Some people prefer to use plain, non-lubricated condoms for oral sex. Condoms that glow in the dark or “lollipop” condoms are called novelty condoms. They are meant to be used for fun only unless the caption on the wrapper states, “if used properly latex condoms will help to reduce the risk of transmission of HIV infection and many sexually transmitted diseases.”

Tomas Pinpin:

Tips for the 17th century Pinoy Most people know Tomas Pinpin only for the honorary titles that school textbook writers have invented for him, like the “Prince of Filipino Printers” or “Patriarch of Filipino Printing.” The pictures of Pinpin in schoolbooks usually portray him as an ordinary Filipino wearing a barong Tagalog, trousers and sporting a mid-20th century hairstyle, but these images are based entirely on the whims of the artists who created them. Pinpin actually lived about 250 years before the barong Tagalog shirt or modern slacks came into fashion.

In fact, it is unlikely that a true portrait of Tomas Pinpin exists that was made during his lifetime.

Careless or misleading depictions like these do little to help us understand the people in history books. Often, a better way to get to know them is to read their own words. Tomas Pinpin is known today only as the first Filipino printer but he didn’t just print other people’s books; he wrote one of his own and several smaller works, too. His image as a mere statue in the pantheon of Filipino heroes doesn’t hint at his surprisingly informal and downto-earth writing style, which is what caught my attention.

True, even with just one fulllength book to his credit, Pinpin could claim many firsts, such as: being the first Filipino author in print; the first published Filipino language expert (Tagalog & Spanish); translation expert (for translating religious lessons); lexicographer (for his bilingual glossary) and; poet. He could also be called the first Filipino journalist and publisher of the first newspaper in the Philippines for reporting on Spanish military victories in the 14-page Sucesos Felices (Glad Tidings) that appeared only once, in 1637.

However, Pinpin’s firsts are almost irrelevant in comparison to the substance of what he wrote. In the early 1600s he gave his fellow Filipinos insights into the minds of their Spanish rulers, while today he gives us insights into the minds of Filipinos 400 years ago.

Tomas Pinpin’s book, published in Abucay, Bataan in 1610, was entitled Librong Pagaaralan nang manga Tagalog nang Uicang Castila (The Book for Tagalogs to study the Castilian

Language). It was unique because, during the colonial era in the Philippines, it was the Spanish priests who wrote the language books, which were intended to teach themselves the local languages. Spanish authorities were never too keen on teaching ordinary Filipinos to speak Spanish. After more than 350 years in the islands, only about 10 per cent of the population could speak Spanish, according to the census of 1903. So, even though the Spanish authorities allowed Pinpin to publish his book, his intention could almost be considered subversive – to teach his fellow Filipinos the language of their rulers and thus gain access to power.

The secrets of success In the opening of his book, Pinpin tells his readers in his own cheeky manner why they should learn Spanish: Di baquin ang ibang manga caasalan at caanyoan nang manga Castila ay inyong quinalologdan at guinagagad din ninyo sa pagdaramitman at sa nananandataman at paglacadman at madlaman ang nagogol ay uala rin hinahinayang cayo dapouat mamocha-mocha cayo sa Castila. Ay aba itopang isang asal macatotohan an sapangongosap nang canila ding uica ang di sucat ibiguing camtan? … Bancay na nga cayo, con anong dating mag visting Castila ang tauo, con ualan asal asal na tantong icamuchang Castila niya? Caya nga ang ibay, baquit, na cacasti-castila nang pagdaramit na ualang di cacastila ang asal soloual: bago con saca sila dologui’t, paquiosapan nang uicang, castila ay totongag tongag na sa hahangal… Bagcos nanga ito ang naguiguing puno, nang ibang marami, at paran laman ito, at ang iba’y, cabalat cayohan lamang.

[Certainly some of the Spaniards’ ways and appearances please you and you imitate the way they dress, the way they wear their weapons and even the way they walk, and you would even spend everything without regret to look like a Spaniard. So, what about this other authentic trait, which is in the speaking of their language; is it not worth having? … No matter what Spanish clothes a person wears, without having this Spanish trait, aren’t you just

a corpse? So why are these others who dress like Spaniards, not also Spanish in their “underwear” habits: if someone approached them and spoke to them in the Spanish language, they would just gape like fools … Above all, this [language] is the source of many other things and it is like the flesh and everything else is just a masquerade.]

Pinpin’s Tagalog may be difficult for us to understand today but to put it in perspective, this is the Tagalog language as it was spoken in the Philippines when Shakespeare was still alive and writing plays in England. Pinpin delivers most of his lessons in this conversational tone, often teasing the readers gently as he shares with them the secrets of his success.

Many had already learned the alphabet and numerals with much enthusiasm, to the surprise of several Spanish commentators, which is why Pinpin was able to publish his Tagalog book with Spanish letters and spelling.

Looking back, this was just the beginning of the end for the native baybayin writing system.

Although the original purpose of the book is now obsolete, it remains as a valuable record that tells us a lot about the Tagalog language 400 years ago without the effects of foreign biases and misunderstandings. Along with old words and figures of speech, Pinpin’s book reveals old Tagalog pronunciations while teaching the importance of correctly pronouncing the then-new sounds and letters of the Spanish language.

Before there was Spanish, Tagalog had only three vowel letters in the baybayin script but they could be pronounced in different ways, just as English has only five vowel letters but many more vowel sounds. The sounds of I and E were interchangeable (lalaki / lalake for man) as were U and O (tao / tau for person).

Pinpin stressed the importance of correctly pronouncing Spanish letters to avoid confusing the meanings of words. This included making clear and consistent distinctions between the vowel sounds. Among his many firsts, Pinpin was probably one of the first writers to comment on the age-old problem that some Filipinos have when they confuse their Ps and Fs. Along with linguistic and cultural insights, Pinpin also preserved for us the old Tagalog counting system, though his intention at the time was to teach Filipinos the Spanish numbers.

We still use most of the Tagalog words for the numbers today but the system of counting in Pinpin’s

day was very different. The number 21, for example, was not said dalawampu’t isa or “two tens and one,” as we’d expect. It was said, maykatlong isa or, as some grammarians have explained this to mean, “having one for the third set of ten.”

Pinpin’s life Not much is known for certain about Tomas Pinpin’s personal life. Some modern sources say he was Chinese but the cover of his book states that he is a native of Bataan, and Pinpin himself says in the introduction that he is a Tagalog. He was born in the barrio Mabatang, Abucay in Bataan, sometime between 1580 and 1585.

The parish records of Abucay were lost when Dutch raiders attacked the town in 1646.

Pinpin learned his craft in about 1608 or 1609 from Christian Chinese printers such as Juan and Pedro de Vera, and Luis Beltran

who had already printed several books for Spanish missionaries. In 1610, Pinpin was working on the printing press of Father Blancas de San Jose in Abucay, Bataan. He is also known to have worked on printing projects in Pila, Laguna (1613) and Binondo, Manila (1623-27). Pinpin’s own book, Librong Pagaaralan, was printed

by Diego Talaghay, thought to be his assistant as he might have been managing Father Blancas’ shop by that time.

Pinpin printed at least 14 books in his career – 15 if we count his own Libro. Other books included the first ever Tagalog grammar by Fr. Blancas de San Jose in 1610 and the first Tagalog dictionary by Fr. Pedro de San Buenaventura in 1613. His son, Simon Pinpin took over the business in about 1640, possibly after Tomas passed away, because there are no records of him after that date.

Diseases and history I remember a Jesuit who wished for a bullet or a single, but equally lethal, cancer cell to end Martial Law. The late Ferdinand Marcos always escaped plots against his life, and this was attributed to an anting-anting given him by Gregorio Aglipay.

Alas, the amulet did not protect him against the disease that altered the course of our history and eventually took his life. When I sit down one day to write about the Marcos years, my framework will be simple. I will divide the Marcos era into two distinct periods – before and after the president developed lupus.

Historians often overlook the influence of disease on history unless it is a scourge caused by cholera, bubonic plague, syphilis or other ailments that kill as many people as a war would. The effect of a tiny germ or a genetic defect is often neglected when it comes to men and women who made history. If we take Nick Joaquin’s word for it, the French Revolution can be blamed on a foreskin. He wrote: Louis XVI had so tight a prepuce he found the sex act painful and couldn’t perform in bed during the first decade of his marriage. His wife Marie Antoinette felt so frustrated she turned wild. When circumcision finally remedied her husband’s incapacity it was too late: her follies had brought France to the brink.

Bundles of documents in the National Archives classified under Festejos y celebraciones detail ceremonies for the birthdays, deaths, marriages, or illnesses of the Spanish royal family in the nineteenth century. Manila rejoiced at princely births and mourned royal deaths in Spain. I

wish we had documents on Philip II, for whom the archipelago was named, because the illness of his son, Carlos, changed Spanish and, consequently, Philippine history.

On the night of April 20, 1562, Carlos slipped down a dark staircase screaming until his head crashed against the closed door at the bottom. His physicians did not think the injury serious, so they bled him twice and put him to bed.

When his condition worsened, Philip was summoned from Madrid to be at his son’s bedside at Alcala. Many physician’s were in attendance and over fifty consultations were held, fourteen of which in the presence of the king who sat on a throne with the grandees of Castile behind him.

Doctors who sat across him were called one by one to express their opinion. When not in attendance, Philip was on his knees praying or sending out letters to the famous shrines in Spain so that the clergy would pray for the recovery of Carlos who was down with a high fever.

On May 9, 1562, Carlos appeared to be near death; but three incidents occurred that have had historians quarrelling for years. First, doctors began, but did not complete, an operation that

would puncture the prince’s skull to release pressure on the brain.

Second, a Moorish quack doctor from Valencia, El Pinterete, arrived with two exotic ointments for wounds – the application of which made Carlos worse. Third, a group of Franciscan monks arrived in the afternoon carrying a century-old corpse of a certain Fray Diego wrapped in a brown robe. The incorrupt body of the monk was placed on the bed beside the unconscious prince.

That night, Carlos showed signs of improvement and regained consciousness after a few days.

Depending on the book you are reading, the cure of the prince is attributed to the court physicians, or the quack doctor, or the Franciscan corpse. However, Philip and Carlos credited Fray Diego for the miracle and petitioned the pope for canonization, which came three popes later in 1588 when Sixtus V declared Fray Diego a saint. San Diego, California is named after him.

Carlos did survive, but he later exhibited such weird behaviour that he was called Carlos the Bewitched. So erratic did the heir to the Spanish empire become that he was later killed under mysterious circumstances. (Probably on orders of his own father.) While historians argue about the illness and death of Carlos, it would be intriguing to speculate on how

our history would have developed if Carlos had become king. What turns would history have taken if Quezon did not have TB? What if Roxas had a stronger heart? What if Marcos did not have lupus?

Without the element of sickness, our history would be different indeed.

The kitchen is the busiest room in the house, the most used and the one room that everyone interacts with every day. It’s also the room that is often the most cluttered.

Because there’s usually more horizontal space, lots of things find their way onto the counters until the surface almost disappears. If that describes your kitchen, you’ll be glad to know you can make a counter attack that will de-clutter your kitchen and make it seem larger.

1. Clear the windowsill or sink counter. If you have a kitchen window or a counter above the sink, you know that this spot attracts all manner of flotsam and jetsam from jewellery to hand lotion, twist ties and rubber bands, medicine bottles and small knick-knacks. Clean this off for a clear view.

2. Put away can openers.

Unless you open multiple cans a day, this appliance doesn’t need to be on the counter and can be placed in a cabinet. Or, you can ditch this appliance altogether and get a good quality handturned can opener.

3. Store the mixer and food processor. These appliances are mostly used on an occasional basis, so clearing them off the counter will give you lots of space and a clean, uncluttered look.

4. Consider storing toaster and coffee maker if unused regularly.

There are some hard-core counter clutter enthusiasts who say all counters should be completely clear, but if you make coffee or toast frequently during the week, taking these appliances in and out of cabinets is cumbersome. Leave

on the counter if you use four or more times a week.

5. Designate a spot for mail.

Counters collect homework, bills, pizza flyers and the like. Create a mail spot in your home to handle all the mail. This can be at the front door, or try hanging wall pockets on a door or inside the pantry to get the visual clutter confined to a home and off the counters.

6. Round up the electric cords.

The kitchen counter has also become the central location for charging cell phones and tablets.

It’s important to get these items up and off the counters, because liquids could inadvertently get the electronics wet. The undercabinet lighting system is an electric track system that has multiple plugs and cradles to hold cellphones and tablets while they charge.

7. Organize the pantry and drawers. One reason counters collect things is because there isn’t enough organization elsewhere. That means that some items are missing a “home.” For example, prescription pill bottles and other types of medicine often pile up on counters. Use small, shallow baskets to hold them and store in a drawer or a designated cabinet/pantry shelf.

Model citizen – teaching boldness and courage While I was a student teacher, I received advice during a class that I apply in my practice as an educator. My professor told us that, as a teacher, don’t ask your students to do something that you wouldn’t do yourself.

It’s important to note that it’s something you wouldn’t do, not something you can’t do.

When I assign activities, I keep this in mind. I do my best to cater to multiple intelligences by trying different options each time they share their learning. Sometimes

we present our learning formally as a group or individually, others we are using music, art and theatre to express ourselves creatively.

My students weren’t always comfortable with both. Some were comfortable with one option, and others still were terrified of sharing their ideas. We had a discussion about the importance of sharing our knowledge, asking questions and receiving feedback from others. They gathered that feedback helps us improve our learning and celebrates our

journey as learners. When we give feedback, we do so in a positive way. We are specific about what we enjoyed about their work, and specific about encouraging what they can improve. We also spoke of the importance of being bold and having courage.

I model honesty when I admit that, even as an adult, I get nervous about speaking about my ideas but I trust in my colleagues’ feedback. I model boldness when I decisively put my foot down and advocate for what I know to be respectful and true. I model courage when I begin a conversation that isn’t an

easy topic, but a conversation that matters. Most important, I openly celebrate each of them and their growth. We have a Celebration Board for our main bulletin board where students choose what work they want to showcase each week. I now have a classroom community that feels safe to share, that welcomes feedback.

Parent tip: Celebrate courage!

As I wrapped up my Student Led Conferences last month, a comment I heard often (and also in previous years) is the newfound confidence parents are noticing in their children. Their child seems more self-aware, courageous to try new things, and confident in themselves. This is music to my ears! Usually, during the middle years, the opposite of this happens – children become so anxious of what others think they it hinders

them from being themselves.

By changing our mindset away from just pointing out errors to celebrating what is going well, we create risk-takers who value their work and their educational journey. We honour them as learners, foster their creativity, and build confidence in their abilities.

They become more willing to try new things and work on areas they don’t perform as strongly in.

White Rabbit turns 10!

On Thursday, April 28, WRP will be hosting its gala event, Swingin’ in Spring, at the Fort

Garry Hotel where it will transport guests back into the golden age of jazz and swing dance. The event, a black-tie affair, is a Big Band Dance Fundraiser with a live jazz performance by the seven-piece Conga Jim band and Winnipeg Jazz singer Jodie Borle, and the event will also have a silent auction and dessert by Jenna Rae Cakes.

This event will support grassroots theatre in Winnipeg, as well as the fight against cancer.

WRP is a volunteer-based not-for-profit arts organization in Winnipeg that creates innovative music theatre productions, as well as unique entertainment for corporate and charitable events. It also offers professional

In a much-awaited announcement on 24 Oras on April 4, the highly coveted roles of the four sisters, who are called Sang’gres or guardians of the elemental gems, went to GMA Artist Center stars Kylie Padilla, Gabbi Garcia, Sanya Lopez and Glaiza de Castro.

A tribute to Hon. Con. Gen. Orli Marcelino WINNIPEG – “Surprise Parangal [tribute]” was a bittersweet surprise party organized to honour and thank outgoing Honorary Consul General Orli Marcelino for his selfless service provided to the Filipino community in Manitoba since his appointment was handed to him by the Philippine Department of Foreign Affairs in 2013.

Organizers Rodge Lopez, Joanne Viviezca, Rey Sangalang and their team, the Friends of Filipino Immigrants in Manitoba (FFIM), kept the preparation quietly and cautioned all invitees to keep Hon. Consul Marcelino from learning about the party.

The event was held on April 2, 2016 at the PCCM. Over a

hundred guests gathered in the MPR of the PCCM early and patiently awaited the arrival of the honouree. Upon opening the MPR door, Marcelino, carrying his grandson Sandigan, was visibly pleasantly surprised. Many of those whom he had helped in the past three years were there to acknowledge him and recognize the service he and his team of volunteers provided.

Election sa Manitoba – may wish list ka na ba?

Hindi ko pa alam kung sino ang iboboto ko ngayong Provincial Election. Kayo rin ba? Masyado kasi akong abala sa trabaho, sa pamilya at sa marami pang ibang ginagawa kaya’t hindi ko pa masyadong nabibigyan ng pansin ang paparating na election.

Pero kung tatanungin ako, mayroon sigurado akong wish list para sa maayos na Manitoba.

Ganito marahil ang tipikal na botante sa Manitoba na may tipikal na pangangailangan. In other words, mga middle class na mamamayan. Habang abala sa patatalumpati ang mga kandidato at pag-katok sa ating mga pintuan para magbigay ng polyeto at magpa-pogi o ganda points ay abala din naman tayo sa pagkayod at pagbabanat ng buto para maitaguyod ang ating pamilya.

Wala na tayo halos panahon para bulatlatin at basahin ang mga pambobola, este, ang mga plataporma ng mga kandidato.

Sa totoo lang, wala pa akong binabasang polyeto na isiniksik sa aming mailbox. Pero may gusto akong mangyari sa Manitoba.

Hindi kasi makatarungan na i-represent ako at ang aking mga kapitbahay ng MLA na magpapainit lang ng puwit at magpapanis ng laway sa Legislative Assembly. Hindi rin makatarungan na puro photo-ops at Facebook posting ang mapapala ko sa aking magiging MLA. At lalong hindi makatarungan na hindi matutugunan ng aking MLA

ang mga isyu sa aking lugar. Lalo na kung hindi naman talaga siya naninirahan sa aming lugar.

Sa totoo lang, gusto kong mag-lobby sa Legislative Assembly at Elections Manitoba na isabatas na kailangang maging residente ng kanilang respective ridings ang mga MLA candidates.

Simple lang ang dahilan ko ditto; paano mo ire-represent ang isang lugar kung hindi ka naman naninirahan ditto? Mas madarama mo ang pangangailangan ng mga mamamayan na ni-rerepresent mo kung lagi mo silang nakakasalamuha anumang oras at anumang panahon. At siyempre, mas proud ako kung ang aking MLA ay mismong kapit-bahay ko. Madaling puntahan, madaling kausapin at madaling magkaroon ng komunikasyon. Hindi na kailangan ang bus bench ads para ko siya makilala.

Pasensya na po sa mga natamaan ko. Nagsasabi lang po ako ng aking opinyon at kuro-kuro at wala akong pakay na patamaan kayo. Hindi ninyo po kasalanan ito kundi ito ay pagkukulang marahil ng sistema ng eleksyon dito sa Canada na puwede naman nating baguhin.

Isa pang pamantayan ng aking pagboto ay ang pag-aaral ng isyu at hindi pagtingin sa kandidato bilang isang celebrity. Hindi dahil sa magaling kayong kumanta, sumayaw, maganda, pogi, sikat o kamag-anak kayo ng aking kamag-anak, o doktor kayo ng

aking pinsan ay iboboto ko na kayo.

Lahat ng partido ay may mga pangako sa probinsya ng Manitoba. Nagkakaiba lamang sila sa kung ano ang kanilang priyoridad.

Para sa akin at marahil sa marami pang mga middle class na pamilya, ang importante sa Manitoba sa kasalukuyan ay ang mga sumusunod: 1. Isaayos at pag-ibayuhin ang medical services. Sana, mayroon tayong maraming choices na pumili ng maayos-ayos na family doctors. At sana, hindi tayo nagaantay nang mahabang oras sa emergency sa mga ospital.

2. Sa edukasyon, magkaroon sana ng marami pang eskwelahan at kolehiyo na magfo-focus sa kung ano ang pangangailangan ng mismong probinsya. Ibig sabihin, ang mga kurso or programs na dapat bigyan ng suporta ng gobyerno at yung mga may siguradong hanap-buhay within the province. Nakakapanghinayang kasi na pagkatapos mag-aral ng mga estudyante ay wala silang mahanap na trabaho sa Manitoba.

3. Maging transparent sana ang provincial government sa mga plano nito. Lahat tayo ay nasorpresa sa PST hike na dapat sana ay dumaan sa isang plebisito.

Sana rin, kapag magbebenta ang provincial government ng mga government departments sa mga pribadong sector ay huwag nila itong gawing sekreto para sa mga government workers. Walang masama sa privatization pero huwag n’yo namang bulagain

o saksakin sa likod ang inyong mga manggagawa. Para sa inyong kaalaman, dati akong provincial government employee, pero ibinenta ang aming departamento sa pribadong sector na wala kaming ka-alam-alam. Luto na ang deal bago namin nalaman.

4. Hindi priyoridad ang tindahan ng alak para sa akin.

Hindi ako impressed sa lider ng partido na ginagawa itong priyoridad.

5. Makipagtulungan sana ang provincial government sa federal at municipal governments para sa mga proyektong makakatulong sa tao regardless kung magkakaiba ang kanilang mga political affiliations.

6. Wellness ng mamamayan.

Bagama’t ito ay bahagi rin ng municipal responsibilities ay matutuwa ang taumbayan kung mas maraming wellness centres sa buong Manitoba na abot-kaya ang halaga. Ang North Centennial Recreational Centre sa North End ay isang magandang halimbawa ng magandang proyekto. Sana marami pa nito ang maipatayo sa iba’t ibang lugar.

7. Sana rin, yung mananalong MLA sa lugar ko ay magsulong ng batas na pagbawalan ang mga MLA na mag-advertise ng kanilang mga pagmumukha sa mga bus benches. Maraming paraan para makipag-ugnayan sa inyong mga constituents at hindi magandang paraan ang bus benches ads. Aminin natin, ang paggamit ng bus bench ads ay isang paraan ng retention sa utak ng publiko na kailangan ng

New volleyball league launched in Winnipeg The new V League Winnipeg held its opening ceremony at the RB Russell High School gymnasium on April 9, 2016.

League organizers say they are passionate about the game of volleyball and that they intend to adhere to the principles of camaraderie and sportsmanship. They envision volleyball to become one of the most highly competitive sports in Winnipeg’s Filipino community.

There are nine teams for women and seven teams for men. The women’s teams are: V Warriors – Belina Remax; C21 Archangels; Coast to Coast; Lady Sparks – Daylight Electrical; Forever Flames – Munoz Silk Screen Printing; Javita; Touchwood Homes; Spartans Mitsubishi; and the Winnipeg Tigers. The seven men’s teams are: Align Chiropractic; Barakos; Gloval Travel Packers; Let’s it Pancit; Richmond; Saladmaster; and the Winnipeg Tigers.
