MESSAGE FROM OUR BOARD CHAIR & CEO
Every once in a while, a word comes to mind that perfectly describes how you feel about something. Home, peace and joy are a few of the terms we hear often from our residents and their families when they talk about our hospice. Reflecting on 2024, the word that resonates with us is gratitude. Gratitude for an incredible team. Gratitude for our supporters. Gratitude for our residents, clients and their families. Gratitude for the opportunity to make end of life a better experience for all.
2024 marked the first year of our new five-year strategic plan. This plan outlines four main goals — Financial Sustainability; Advocacy and Impact; People; and Partnerships, Collaboration and Growth. These goals serve as our guideposts, charting a path toward a future where wholefamily end-of-life care is the norm rather than an afterthought.
FINANCIAL SUSTAINABILITY
Our most significant accomplishment in 2024 was securing a three-year operational funding contract with Alberta Health Services (AHS) to provide residential hospice care. This contract provides Pilgrims guaranteed funding of $2.5 million for each year of the contract.
While this funding is substantial and provides a measure of stability, it accounts for only 40% of our budget. The remaining 60% comes from people like you who believe that individuals facing end of life deserve better. Our community of supporters made a significant impact in 2024, helping us to surpass our fundraising goal by 20%. Those funds take our care beyond basic and ensure our programs and services remain free of charge.

ADVOCACY & IMPACT
In addition to funding, our contract with AHS provides Pilgrims with a more direct opportunity to demonstrate and advocate for a better end-of-life experience. We’re also a founding member of the Alberta Independent Residential Hospice Alliance which formed in 2024. The alliance is a group of independent hospices working together to advocate for a strong hospice model in Alberta. By sharing best practices and coordinating advocacy efforts, we’re strengthening the delivery of high-quality, communitybased end-of-life care. With one strong, unified voice, we’re advocating for a distinct model of care, sustainable funding, equitable access and consistent standards in hospice care across the province.
PEOPLE
In 2024, we deepened our commitment to staff development by participating in the McGill International Palliative Care Congress — a vital opportunity to learn from global leaders in the field. We also facilitated several Palliative & Hospice Education Days — the only dedicated palliative and hospice training of its kind in Edmonton. These initiatives not only enhance our team’s knowledge and expertise but also strengthen the delivery of palliative and hospice care throughout the city.
PARTNERSHIPS, COLLABORATION & GROWTH
Our grief support and Home Visiting Hub programs experienced significant growth in 2024. In grief support, we piloted two new programs — a Men's Cooking Group and the Grief Recovery Method — both of which have received positive feedback and will continue in 2025. Our Home Visiting Hub focused on managing demand while building capacity through physician recruitment and enhanced nursing support — a priority we will continue to advance in the year ahead for this vital community service.
Looking back on 2024 reminds us that whole-family end-of-life care is necessary and desired in our community. Pilgrims Hospice Society is proud to be at the forefront of that movement, and we’re grateful for every resident, client, family member, caregiver, employee and supporter who believes in it too. Your trust provides us with the energy and determination to continue advocating for a future that allows everyone to die with dignity, comfort and compassion.

We are so grateful for the wonderful and compassionate care of the staff. We felt our loved one was in the best hands possible. Our loved one’s needs were catered to, whether it was his minimal food requirements, personal care or progressive medication needs. The staff responded in a timely manner to our concerns, walked us through the dying process and provided us much emotional support. The final send-off was very touching.

HOME VISITING HUB
Our Home Visiting Hub program continues to be successful, bridging the gap for those living with a life-threatening progressive illness at home who do not have access to a primary care provider. Clients receive home visits from our physicians and nurses and have 24/7 access to physician support. On average, clients of our Home Visiting Hub spend 19.7 days under our care, make 30% fewer emergency room visits and enjoy a better quality of life.
In 2024, in response to increasing demand, our Home Visiting Hub focused on recruiting new physicians to the program and enhancing the nursing support we provide. Our physicians, each serving a specific geographic area, had 85 patients under their care last year.
Without having the HVH, I am not sure my loved one would have lived as long as he did. His anxiety levels decreased by 100% after we started having regular visits. It enabled me to keep him home until almost the end.

SHAYNE’S STORY
A JOURNEY OF LOVE, STRENGTH AND COMPASSION
and could often be found playing sports or just hanging out with his sons. He lived his life with a quiet strength and a fun-loving spirit. He embraced every moment, and his laidback demeanour and calm presence were a source of comfort and joy for his family and friends. That Shayne was ill was difficult for everyone to comprehend.
Not wanting his final days to be in a hospital, Shayne and Stevie decided to spend their remaining time together at home. But as Shayne’s condition worsened, Stevie knew they needed help. “For the last couple of months before coming to Pilgrims, Shayne couldn’t leave his bed. It was then I knew this was too much for us to do alone.”
“Shayne was at peace here,” explained Stevie. “His best month after being diagnosed was the month he spent at Pilgrims.”
Recommendations from doctors, friends and home care led the family to Pilgrims Hospice Society, a decision that would transform their journey. “We felt instantly at home at Pilgrims,” remembers Stevie. “There wasn’t any beeping; Shayne wasn’t hooked up to an IV. He was getting the care he needed in a very non-intrusive way.”
“The staff at Pilgrims took care of Shayne’s needs; they knew how to make him comfortable and how to manage his pain. I could just be there with him and be his wife.”
Shayne would joke and smile. He even started enjoying visits from family and friends, which he had been reluctant to do at home.
Shayne Zender died on December 2, 2023, but the impact of Pilgrims Hospice Society on the Zender family didn’t end with his death. “I joined the grief support walking group and found comfort in connecting with others. The boys attended grief support too; it’s been helpful for them to know that there are other kids who have lost a parent.”
Stevie is full of gratitude for donors like you.
“It’s amazing that donors make this place possible. Our friends have donated because they visited Shayne here and saw firsthand the care he received. We also requested donations at Shayne’s Celebration of Life so that others can have the same experience as we did.”
Shayne’s story is a testament to the profound difference that Pilgrims Hospice Society makes in the lives of families facing an end-of-life journey. You can make a difference so more families like the Zenders receive comfort and care when they need it most.
The Zender family experienced peace in the final days of Shayne’s life. This was possible because of donors like you. More of our friends, neighbours, colleagues and community need your help.
I can’t thank Pilgrims Hospice enough for the opportunity to participate in the Foundations of Grief Program. The facilitators of the program were incredibly compassionate, knowledgeable and respectful. After each session, I felt more validated, more normal and have a better understanding of where I am in my grief journey. Thank you isn’t enough to express my gratitude. I look forward to attending more programs with Pilgrims Hospice.
In 2024, we continued to refine and expand our Grief Support program to better serve our community and the families of our hospice residents. By maintaining our group-based support model, we increased accessibility and engagement, serving a total of 744 clients throughout the year. While we continue to offer individual grief support to hospice families and those connected to our Home Visiting Hub, we now refer community members seeking one-on-one support to partner agencies in the Edmonton area.

We also hosted our first Annual Service of Remembrance, during which we released butterflies in honour of more than 200 past residents. Music therapy became part of our expanded services, alongside the launch of our first grief workshop for corporate clients, In Lieu of Flowers, and our first Missing Moms workshop.
In 2024, we introduced two new programs — the Grief Recovery Method and a Men’s Cooking Group — providing even more options for healing and connection.
Our grief support programming is available yearround, including information sessions, structured programs, drop-in groups, workshops and memorial services.
Looking ahead, we plan to introduce new initiatives, including Death Matters, a weekly anticipatory grief group and Care for the Caregiver, a monthly support session. We will also extend grief education to institutions like the Cross Cancer Institute, Stollery Children’s Hospital and local schools.
Through these efforts, we remain committed to providing compassionate and meaningful grief support that fosters healing and resilience within our community.
HIGHLIGHTS FROM OUR YEAR
A NEW PARTNERSHIP WITH AHS
In 2022, Pilgrims Hospice Society received a $2.5 million grant from the Alberta government in exchange for sharing information about our unique care model, which contributed to their assessment of hospice care models across the province. In 2023, the grant was extended, providing an additional $2.5 million.
In May 2024, Pilgrims became a contracted service provider for hospice care with Alberta Health Services (AHS). The agreement provides assured funding from AHS for at least the next three years, validating the value of our unique model of end-of-life care.
The money we receive from AHS covers the basics — base levels of staffing and standard supplies. YOU take our care beyond basic, providing staff, equipment and experiences that make end of life a better experience for all.
TECHNOLOGY MEETS COMPASSION
Thanks to a grant from the Edmonton Community Foundation, Pilgrims was able to purchase three OM Interactive (OMI) motion-activated projection systems.
OMI provides a holistic approach to care for individuals with mid to advanced dementia or cognitive decline. Its unique programs support the core principles of wellness — mental stimulation, physical activity, social interaction and emotional well-being — which align seamlessly with Pilgrims' person-centred care model.
The projectors, which cast a wide range of interactive scenes and games onto the floor, table or even a bed, are providing our residents, clients and their families with even more opportunities to engage, connect and communicate.

ADULT DAY PROGRAM
Individuals living at home continue to face challenges such as isolation and caregiver burnout. Our Adult Day Program provides a safe and supportive environment for clients as well as much-needed respite for caregivers. Families also receive valuable resources and guidance to help them navigate the health care system.
Through engaging social and recreational activities, the program helps participants maintain their physical and cognitive well-being. Families report improvements in their loved one’s mood, memory, behaviour and cognition, highlighting the program’s positive impact.
In 2024, our dedicated staff provided over 1,000 hours of programming support to 33 clients, ensuring that caregivers had essential breaks while their loved ones participated in enriching activities. From cultural experiences, like discovering the sights and traditions of Nepal, to hands-on culinary workshops, such as making tiramisu from scratch, our programming brings the world to our clients in meaningful ways. Clients also enjoyed innovative physical activities like drumming and dance movement classes, all designed to enhance their overall well-being.
