WELCOME from the HEAD OF SCHOOL

Dear Pilgrim Community,

I am pleased to present the annual report that captures the voices and narratives of our wonderful school community during the 2022-2023 academic year. It is with great pride and enthusiasm that I share our accomplishments and aspirations over the past year. We have so much to be grateful for and to celebrate. Now with the strategic plan in hand, we have rebranded and started working on some of the initiatives on Sustainability and DEIB, enhancing our Arts, Engineering, and SST programs, and our Long Range Financial Plan to name a few. In October 2022, we said goodbye to our old mascot, the Patriots, and welcomed the Panthers. Panther pride started strong in 2022 with multiple league titles in Flag Football, Soccer, and Boys’ Volleyball. We are creating an identity of competitive athletics through hard work and determination of spirit. Every Monday, we came together as a community providing much-needed bonding moments for our students, faculty, and staff and celebrating many different cultural celebrations and sustainability efforts. Service-learning programs on and off campus continued to engage our entire community to give back and provide valuable learning experiences. Another exemplary year of college placements ensured that our newest Pilgrim alumni are wellpoised to continue their learning journey beyond Pilgrim.

We couldn’t have accomplished any of this without the generosity of our donors, supporters, and partners. We had a record-breaking year with our Pilgrim Fund and a very successful 80’s Prom Gala that raised funds for our tuition assistance program. We also enjoyed many wonderful opportunities to connect with our entire community and much-needed dancing!

We remain committed to providing the best possible education and opportunities to enrich our students’ unique journey and look forward to another amazing school year where we inspire our students to better themselves and the world around them.

Warmest regards,

WELCOME from the CHAIR OF THE GOVERNING BOARD

Dear Friends,

What a great pleasure it has been to be a part of Pilgrim School’s growth during the 2022-2023 school year! From the incredible athletics achievements to many celebrations that promote our diversity and interests, it has been a thoroughly engaging and collaborative year for everyone at our school. The Pilgrim Governing Board is truly grateful to share this journey with our incredible community!

The Governing Board’s focus steadfastly remains on Pilgrim’s future and we are committed to ensuring that our Strategic Plan is given the support that it needs for success. We continue to be inspired by the Pilgrim community’s extraordinary support of our school. Thank you for your partnership that makes everything possible.

Sincerely,

COMMUNITY HIGHLIGHTS

Sustainability Initiatives

The 2022-2023 school year marked the official start of Pilgrim’s Sustainability Coordinator position!

Within this time, Pilgrim has implemented many successful sustainability practices focused on Earth Care, People Care, and Fair Share; ethics derived from most traditional societies adopted by Permaculture. Sustainability in practice is a necessary component to creating a socially and environmentally just and responsible community, and Pilgrim School is well on its way.

Students actively implemented sustainability practices through weekly Community Monday sessions, wherein they joined a Climate Action or Social Justice Action group to implement the UN Sustainable Development Goals (SDGs) into curriculum, community, and infrastructure. https://sdgs.un.org/goals

The Groups represented Sustainable Development Goals:

• Social Justice Action Groups

Gender Equality (5)

Peace and Justice (16)

• Climate Action Groups

Responsible Consumption (12)

Water (6, 14)

• Climate Action (13) and Reduced Inequalities (10).

The Responsible Consumption Group conducted a school-wide waste audit and assisted in the development and implementation of the new “3 Bin System”, which included a bin for trash, recyclables, and compost—a positive step forward in diverting waste from landfill toward resource recovery. The Land Group researched, designed, and built (with the help of our very talented Facilities Team) three new edible garden beds on campus, located in the elementary playspace and Nancy White Way. They are growing pumpkins for our October festivities in the coming school year. The Water Group thoroughly researched Pilgrim’s water usage. The group developed several prototype plans to reduce and reuse water on campus, specifically through rainwater collection and developing a new waterefficient toilet system.

Pilgrim’s Early Education and Elementary divisions thrived in implementing Climate Action and Sustainability into their daily practice with their composting system and edible garden beds, where the ladybugs, worms, and insects that have become vital to their sustainability practices. The STEAM department participates in Climate Week activities each September and Earth Month in April. These activities include the twice-run Outdoor Education days, helping our students fall in love with learning outside using their heads, hearts, and hands to become stewards of the Earth.

Faculty and staff formed a Green Team Committee of eight members with representatives from Early Education, Elementary, Secondary, Administration, and Facilities. The group is responsible for creating a School Environmental Management Plan (SEMP), school-wide sustainability policies, and providing assistance to all members of the Pilgrim community in implementing sustainability into our daily practices and curriculum. One of the significant outcomes of this group was developing our 2022-2023 sustainability goal to move towards zero waste using the 6Rs of Sustainability – Rethink, Refuse, Reduce, Reuse, Repair, Recycle – as our framework to assist the entire community in taking on this critical responsibility. A Green Team Committee highlight was visiting the Athens Recycling facility and learning where our stuff goes and how to organize our waste systems more effectively at Pilgrim.

The senior leadership team met with Pilgrim’s Sustainability Coordinator, Lauren Kaszubski, to create a 5-year sustainability plan which includes focusing on areas of waste/resource recovery, energy efficiency, biodiversity, and water efficiency each year to bring together the core principles of sustainability and climate action. Pilgrim’s dedicated Facilities Team is working closely to realize Pilgrim’s vision for a more sustainable future. Each year will build on the next, creating opportunities for our school community to learn and grow in this space.

Pilgrim Panther Athletics:

A Year in Review

Ayear of unprecedented success signaled the excellent quality and infinite possibilities of Pilgrim Panther Athletics. Pilgrim won two overall league titles and five middle school titles, and our Boys Varsity Volleyball team made a run to the Final 8 of CIF Southern Section.

Fall opened with our middle school flagship program, MS Flag Football, reaching a double final. Winning the Arroyo league in dominant fashion over Sequoyah and losing a heated contest in the tough VCAL league, Coach Concialdi continues to show his vision for excellence.

The Panthers not only excelled but continued its growth by adding to our women’s sports community with MS Girls Soccer, led by Coach Cam. In the meantime, Women’s Varsity Volleyball under Coach Manly doubled their win total and MS Golf competed in three dual matches.

Spring was the culmination of hard work, dedication and the idea that sometimes being good is as simple as making the choice to be better. Boys Varsity Volleyball had been working almost consistently for 18 months and the chemistry was clear on the floor.

Playing a school record high of 32 games, including two Top 3 tournament finishes and five First Team All League players, the season was proof that greatness is all in the work. Senior Robi Cole ‘23 was named First Team All CIF, making him one of the best eight players in a section of 500+ players.

Winter saw Coach Kang capturing the first ever Omega League title in Varsity Soccer. Stars Nika Carrigan ‘23 and Robi Cole ‘23 led the Panthers to a one loss league record and the first playoff appearance in over 10 years.

MS Basketball added another Arroyo league title under star Emiliano Ibarra (8), who led all players in scoring.

Pilgrim AssociationParent

The Pilgrim Parent Association (PPA) is a group of dedicated parents who are committed to building a strong and vibrant community at Pilgrim School. We believe that the health of the school is directly tied to the strength of the parent community and its connection to the student body and the surrounding neighborhood.

The PPA organizes a variety of events throughout the year to bring the parent and student communities together. A glimpse at our brimming calendar includes, Teacher Appreciation Luncheons, Native American, Asian and Hispanic Heritage events, Black History Month celebrations, Parent Art Nights, and parent-led Book Club meetings. In addition to these events, the PPA provides support for other school-sponsored events, such as Back-to-School Night, Admissions Open House, Outdoor Ed Days, School Musical, Cafe Barnum, Science Night, and Arts Fest. We also coordinate individual class representatives who organize in-class social events throughout the year and support our teachers in a multitude of ways.

We are dedicated to strengthening the tie between Pilgrim School and the local community through volunteering and hosting monthly dinners at The Alexandria House, a local transitional house for women and children, organizing annual Holiday Gift Drive supporting local shelters and foster children, and Pilgrim Sunday, a monthly food distribution program for our unhoused neighbors.

We are grateful to be a part of this community and are committed to continuing the work with our fellow parents to build a strong and vibrant culture at Pilgrim School.

Sincerely, Your 2022-2023 Board

Fill the Gap FUND The

The Fill the Gap Fund was founded in September 2022 to help families of color “fill the gap,” covering the extra expenses that may be cost prohibitive throughout the school year. The funds were raised through ticket sales, concessions and donations from our Movie Night events, and all the proceeds were matched, dollar for dollar, by an anonymous donor. Pilgrim is looking forward to continuing this biannual event to continue raising funds for our families of color.

Pilgrim Night Out W

We did not think that we could outdo last year’s Casino Night Gala but boy were we wrong! This year’s Back to ‘80s Prom Gala once again proved how fantastic our community is at having fun together as well as at supporting our school! We could not have asked for a better group of ‘80s prom kings and queens to give us a night to remember and loved seeing our parents, faculty and staff, and friends dancing the night away. A very special shout out to our MC, Paul Scheer, for keeping us entertained!

We raised nearly $140,000 in support of our Tuition Assistance program through generous sponsorships, ticket sales, the best-ever silent auction and text-to-give donations. We are so grateful for everyone for your part in making this event a smashing success in every way. Thank you! We look forward to the next gala in spring 2024!

“Pilgrim School has given me a close social circle.”

Class of 2023 Congratulations

“Pilgrim School has given me a home in a new country.”

“Pilgrim School has given me the chance to grow into my full potential as an international black student.”

Wilfred B. Mongare

Time is precious, as the twenty recent graduates of the Class of 2023 have come to understand well. Having begun the typically thrilling first year of high school remotely, they were eager to make every remaining year and moment of high school count. Fully embracing the “work hard, play hard” mentality, the Class of 2023 leaned aggressively into academics, visual and performing arts and athletics in equal measure while also making time to laugh and be silly with each other! With a voracious appetite for learning, they enrolled in advanced and collegelevel courses like Astronomy, C++, French, and Japanese. They authored books to be published.

“Pilgrim School has given me an undeniable close group of friends that I’ll cherish for a lifetime.”

- Sasha Alexander Krigman-Gubarev

At the annual High School Arts Fest, they presented pieces that were as personal as they were innovative, including Pilgrim’s first interactive sculpture. The Boys Varsity Volleyball team whipped the Pilgrim community into a frenzy in a historic run to the CIF Playoffs. While the Class of 2023 poured hours upon hours of work into achieving diverse feats, they radiated excitement and joy throughout all stages from inception to completion.

Grinding out all of these accomplishments was exhausting, and the Class of 2023 found energy from their loved ones, trusted adults on campus, and perhaps more than anywhere, amongst each other. They found that despite the hours of homework, long practices, meetings to collaborate on projects, they could always make time for a long chat with a beloved teacher about world travel or

LIFERS HIGHLIGHTS

a debrief of a recent film with a friend. Sometimes, too, the conversations were hard but honest. The Class of 2023 was challenged not only by teachers but also by one another. Friends held each other accountable to the high standards of achievement both academically and personally, the way only trusted companions can.

We are dazzled by the Class of 2023 and their lesson to us that while time is precious, there are always ways to find more for joy, play, and relationship.

When they first came to Pilgrim: Preschool

Favorite Memory: Trips Week has always brought some of my favorite memories.

Favorite Pilgrim teacher(s): I’ve been at Pilgrim so long and have had so many wonderful teachers throughout the years that I can’t choose a favorite.

(Robi) Ahmadi Cole

When they first came to Pilgrim: Junior Kindergarten

Favorite Memory: My favorite memory is playing sports for Pilgrim since 3rd grade. Especially now that I am moving into volleyball season. I’m so happy to have played in such a loving and caring community. Favorite Pilgrim teacher(s): Mr. Woods is my favorite teacher because he has always been kind to me. Even before we were close, he gave me the opportunity to do an Independent study with him. Now that I have two classes with him, we have gotten to know each other better. My favorite memory with Mr. Woods was talking about music with him and seeing how similar yet different we are.
