Welcome to Pilchuck Glass School’s Auction, Gala and Celebration of Glass
Pilchuck Glass School fosters and educates a diverse worldwide community that explores the creative use of glass in art and design. The school is located 50 miles north of Seattle, Washington, in the forested foothills of the Cascade Range overlooking Puget Sound. Each summer and fall, Pilchuck offers a broad spectrum of courses in the use of glass as an expressive material, along with annual residencies for emerging and established artists. Pilchuck’s programs, residencies and events emphasize experimentation, investigation, teamwork and personal growth. Students and instructors from all over the world and across the United States come to Pilchuck. Since its founding in 1971 by Dale Chihuly, Anne Gould Hauberg (1917–2016), and John H. Hauberg (1916–2002), Pilchuck has been a creative retreat where artists teach artists in a supportive environment. Pilchuck is open to applications from novice, aspiring and professional artists with the desire and commitment to learn in any of the one- to three-week courses offered from May to September. The school also invites renowned artists who typically work in media other than glass to expand their art through collaboration and individual research by working with accomplished glassmakers. Fall and spring residencies provide emerging and established artists working in glass the time and space to develop new processes or create fresh bodies of work through individual and collaborative projects. Pilchuck’s outreach and special events connect our extended community of artists and supporters. Events take place on campus, in Seattle and throughout the United States and abroad, showcasing the breadth and depth of contemporary art created with glass.

On behalf of the Pilchuck staff, Trustees and community of artists, welcome to our 47th Annual Auction Pilchuck: Bubbles, Bling & Breaking Things.

Pilchuck Glass School was co-founded in 1971 when Dale Chihuly, John H. Hauberg, and Anne Gould Hauberg gave life to Dale’s vision for a school in Dale’s home of the Pacific Northwest, where artists would teach other artists, share ideas and expand the knowledge and abilities of working in the magical material of glass. Just as our now 54-year-old organization grew from a focused vision, so do many forms of glass begin: with a bubble. Thus came the inspiration and theme for this year’s auction. Now entering our 55th year, on a 55-acre campus where artists from all over the world come to learn from one another, we are continually inspired and motivated by the transformative experiences that occur at Pilchuck; similar to the transformative abilities the medium of glass offers artists. One of the core principles at Pilchuck is experimentation – to learn about the limitless possibilities of glass, and to strive for innovation. With experimentation often comes failure. At Pilchuck, failure means success. It means an artist has embraced the spirit of Pilchuck, where we strive to push the material as far as possible because when we fail, we learn.

How the auction works
AUCTION RULES — All bids are final and non-retractable. The highest bids (either acknowledged by the auctioneer during the live event, written on a paper bid sheet or submitted via the online auction web page) are legal contracts to purchase the item. All purchases made are FINAL and there will be no exchanges or refunds on items unless otherwise noted. — Credit cards on file will be automatically charged within 72 hours after the close of the auction unless other arrangements are made. If payment is unsuccessful within 72 hours, any items won may go to the next highest bidder at the discretion of the organization. — To arrange for payment through a different method, please contact us at ldooley@pilchuck.org in advance of the auction or during in-person checkout. If no other arrangement is made in advance of the auction, the credit card on file will be automatically charged. — The organization reserves the right to add or withdraw items from the auction without notice before final bids are made. — Pilchuck Glass School neither warrants nor represents, and in no way shall be responsible for, the correctness of descriptions or conditions of items or arrangements. — All goods and services must be claimed and used within the dates and guidelines as noted in item description. — Auction items are awarded to one purchaser only. — By bidding in the live or silent auction, each bidder agrees to these auction rules. Patrons attending in person may pick up purchased items at the check-out table after the live auction concludes. Virtual Bidders If you are bidding on the silent auction virtually, you will have the option to pick up your purchases from Pilchuck Glass School’s Seattle office during one of our designated art pickup days. A member of the Pilchuck staff will reach out to you following the event to make arrangements for pickup. If you are participating virtually and would like your item to be shipped, a UPS representative will reach out to you directly via email to coordinate shipping arrangements and take your payment information.* If you have not made pick up or shipping arrangements by November 18, 2025, Pilchuck will ship the item(s) to the purchaser at their expense or reserves the right to reclaim the item as property of the school. *PLEASE NOTE: Shipping fees are not included in the price of the artwork and will be calculated after the auction. Marked items may incur higher shipping costs due to high insurance: values, weight, or oversize packaging requirements. Shipped items will be insured for the amount of their fair market value. Silent auction bidding will occur in two formats: — ONLINE for Spotlight & Award Winners and — IN-PERSON for Silent 1: Form & Function and Silent 2: Bubbles & Bling.
Bidding for the live auction will take place IN-PERSON or BY PROXY. Please follow the directions below, based on whether you are participating in person or by proxy:

In-Person Participation:
ONLINE - SPOTLIGHT AND AWARD WINNERS
All in-person bidding on live auction items will take place using physical bid cards in the Fremont Studios dining room. To bid in the live auction, hold your bid card up high with the number facing toward the auctioneer. Either the auctioneer or a bid spotter can accept your bid. The auctioneer reserves the right to reject any bid that is merely a fractional advance over the previous bid. The highest bid acknowledged by the auctioneer is deemed a legal contract with that bidder to purchase the item. You may preview live auction items in the entrance area and on the stage of Fremont Studios prior to the live auction. The preview period ends once the live auction begins.
Bidding for the online-only silent auction sections will open online on Monday, October 13 at 9:00 AM PDT. If you are bidding on silent auction items prior to the inperson event, you can bid from your personal computer, tablet, or phone. The night of the event, all in-person guests will bid on online silent auction items from their mobiles devices. If you need assistance, please visit the help desk at Registration, where Pilchuck’s team can help you or place bids on silent auction items on your behalf.
Absentee Bidding: Please contact our team in advance of the live auction to confirm the items you wish to bid on and your bid amount(s) at cthomas@pilchuck.org. Our team will use your bid card number to bid upon items on your behalf. Phone Bidding: You may schedule your participation in the live auction by phone by contacting our team in advance at cthomas@pilchuck.org. Our team will call you at the number you provide us. We cannot guarantee that we will succeed in reaching you by phone or accurately placing your bids. When registering to bid by phone on an item, you may be able to submit a back-up bid, which our team can execute on your behalf if we cannot reach

PAPER BIDDING - SILENT 1 AND 2 Silent 1 and Silent 2 bidding will be done this year via paper bid sheets in Fremont Studios on Saturday, October 18. In-person bidding will begin when the auction opens at 4:30 PM at Fremont Studios and close at staggered times. Bidding will end at 6:30pm. In the event of a dispute over a silent auction bid, oral bids may be taken at the discretion of the auctioneer—but only from those who have already placed bids. The auctioneer will determine the winning bid and the decision will be final.

Online Bidding BIDDING REGISTRATION — Participants must register first in order to be able to place a bid. Register for free at auctria.events/pilchuck. If the Register button is not displaying, you may already be registered. Once registered and logged in, you can participate in the online silent auction. HOW TO BID — When signed in, you can click on an item in the catalog. If bidding is open, you’ll see a form like the screenshot below to place your bid:
— The Item Details page will display that you have the “current high bid” and its amount. If you have bid a maximum bid amount you will also see that amount noted as well as what the next bid should be based on the item’s bid increments. — Once bidding has closed on the item, an Item Won Notification will be sent to the bidder with the current high bid. MAX BID — The Max Bid feature allows bidders to set a maximum amount they are willing to bid on an item. When a max bid is entered, your actual bid is kept as low as possible, and the system will raise the bid up to the maximum entered only as another bidder bids against them. Your bid will never go over the amount you entered. BUY-IT-NOW — To purchase an item outright, you can click Buy-It-Now. A bid with Buy-It-Now is guaranteed, allowing you to win the item. MY ACCOUNT — When signed-in, the My Account page provides you with an overview of your account including such information as your Account Summary, Bidder Details, Active Bids, and Payments. — Please note that not all items are available for online bidding. Live, Silent 1 and Silent 2 items will be preview only, as those items can only be bid on in-person at the event.
— To place a bid, select the space under “How much do you want to bid immediately” and select the next highest bid increment. Then, click the Bid button. Once you have finished, a confirmation window will pop up asking if the bid is correct.

Think Big 24 x 11 x 11 inches 2025, Signed Blown and hot sculpted glass Jason Christian has worked with a variety of well-known artists in the Seattle community, including Martin Blank, Preston Singletary, James Mongrain and Nancy Callan. For a decade, he has been an integral member of Dale Chihuly’s boathouse team, collaborating and working with international artists, including Pino Singnoretti. His individual work explores the art of reticello, classical Venetian techniques and modern simplicity. Recently he has been developing art inspired by the works of Faberge, combining the delicate complexity of reticello with the intricate detailing Faberge’s eggs are known for.

Drawn to nature, Hiroshi uses fish as his personal symbol to describe his journeys from Japan to America, traversing the oceans. He is co-founder of Ezra Glass Studio in Japan and chairman of the glass department and head of the craft department at Osaka Art University. Yamano’s work is exhibited widely in the U.S. and abroad and is included in many museums and public collections.

Cherry Red Droplet 18.5 x 16.5 x 16.5 inches 2018, Signed Blown and etched glass Nancy Callan grew up near Boston and attended Massachusetts College of Art and Design (MassArt). In 1996, she relocated to Seattle to begin a 19-year apprenticeship with maestro Lino Tagliapietra. She brings a contemporary sensibility to the Venetian traditions of fine glassworking, using cane techniques in innovative ways. Callan’s work is held in private and museum collections around the world, including the Microsoft Collection, Chrysler Museum of Art (Va.), The Mint Museum (N.C.) and Peabody-Essex Museum (Mass.). A 20-year survey of her work in glass, “Nancy Callan: Forces At Play,” was shown at the Museum of Glass in Tacoma in 2025.

Arctic 7 x 15 x 10 inches 2023, Signed Free hand sculpted glass Raven Skyriver was born and raised in rural western Washington on the small island of Lopez. His work is a celebration of biodiversity. Practicing close observation of form, proportion and detail are key elements of Raven’s work, all while touching on themes of conservation, food sovereignty and interconnectedness. Raven resides on Lopez Island still, where he makes his work in the home studio he and his wife, Kelly O’Dell built together.

Red Vase 36 x 7 x 7 inches 2025, Signed Blown glass Dante Marioni comes from a family of artists and has been blowing glass since he was 15. Through the process of making his vessels, he has joined the centuries-long conversation about classical design, proportion and aesthetics. Marioni has participated at Pilchuck Glass School every summer since 1983 and currently serves on the Board of Trustees. He has received the Louis Comfort Tiffany Foundation Award and the 2016 Libensky Brychtova Award. Marioni’s work is held in the National Museum of Modern Art in Tokyo, the Los Angeles County Museum of Art and the Victoria and Albert Museum.

Blue Solitude (Mediterranean Treasures Series) 25 x 20.5 x 0.5 inches 2025, Signed Painting with glass Narcissus Quagliata is a painter, glass artist, teacher and poet. His paintings can be seen in museums and private collections worldwide. He defined new pathways for glass art and is considered one of the most significant artists in the medium. “The Dome of Light: Wind, Fire, and Time” is the largest illuminated glass art dome in the world. It is situated in the Central Station of the Kaohsiung Rapid Transit metro system and is a landmark that has now become a tourist destination in Taiwan. His glass dome for the entry rotunda of the Basilica of Santa Maria degli Angeli e dei Martiri, built by Michelangelo on the ruins of the Baths of Diocletian in Rome, is well known for the use of light within the space to manifest the movement and alignment of celestial bodies. One of his major life achievements has been the development of techniques to create fused glass imagery, a process akin to painting. JOEY KIRKPATRICK AND FLORA MACE

Zanfirico Pear 18.5 x 12 x 12 inches 1997, Signed Hand blown glass with zanfirico cane pickups Joey Kirkpatrick and Flora C. Mace have worked collaboratively for the past 45 years after meeting at Pilchuck Glass School in 1979. They have created a diverse body of work that includes both blown glass vessels and applied imagery, and sculpture fabricated with wood, glass and other mixed media. The artists, respected for their innovative work, have concluded the series for which they are most known: large scale blown glass fruit and vegetable forms. They continue to work on life-size figurative wood and glass sculptures, as well as outdoor bronze installations.

RICHARD MARQUIS

Marquiscarpa #02-7 10.25 x 7 x 7 inches 2002, Signed Glass, blown and fused murrine, slumped, wheel ground Richard Marquis, born 1945, is one of the pioneers in glass and one of the first glassmakers to receive a Fulbright Fellowship to work at Venini on Murano in 1968 where he learned to create intricate murrine. Lino Tagliapietra calls him “The King of Murrine.” This piece was made on Whidbey Island where his studio was operating until around 2019 when he retired from glassmaking. Richard said that the Marquiscarpas were his favorite pieces despite how difficult they were to make and how many murrines they needed; they are thus rare.

Dick Weiss received his BA from Yale University. He has received two National Endowment for the Arts craftsman grants, two John H. Hauberg Fellowships and has been an Artist in Residence at Pilchuck Glass School. His work is in the collections of the Corning Museum of Glass and the Victoria and Albert Museum in London. Cappy and Dick have loved the collaborative spirit behind Pilchuck since the early 1980s, and say that they are happy and proud to support such a great place with a collaborative piece of their own. He was introduced to glass at the California College of Arts and Crafts while studying under Marvin Lipofsky. In 1974, he became Dale Chihuly’s first assistant. From 1974 to 1987, he was Pilchuck Glass School’s Creative and Educational Director. In 1980, he brought Lino Tagliapietra to Pilchuck. Moore pursued his MFA at Rhode Island School of Design. He was a key player in establishing Seattle as a center for contemporary glass. He was a designer at Venini Studio in Murano, Italy, faculty at Massachusetts College of Art and Design in Boston, and faculty and member of the Board of Trustees at Pilchuck Glass School.

At a young age, Salvadore began following his grandfather, Antonio Mantoan, into the furnaces of Murano. In 1987, he opened his own studio, Campagnol & Salvadore, where he further developed his glassblowing expertise and talent. In 1998, Salvadore made a conscious decision to turn away from traditional functional glass work and began demonstrating his unique murrine technique at Corning Museum of Glass, Pilchuck Glass School and more. Gondola 6.5 x 86.5 x 7 inches 2014, Signed Blown glass and copper Lino Tagliapietra was born in 1934 in Murano, Italy, and became an apprentice glassblower at age 11. Even at a young age, Lino exhibited an immense dexterity for glass and was appointed the title of “Maestro” when he was just 21 years old. In 1980, Lino visited Seattle for the first time and introduced students at Pilchuck Glass School to the traditions of Venetian glassblowing. This cross-cultural collaboration helped shape the identity of American glassblowing and offered Lino an opportunity to expand his horizons internationally. Now in his 80s, with more than 70 years of experience, the Maestro splits his time between Murano and Seattle.

Instead, he works from a philosophy of acceptance and constructs his art in vulnerable, deeply human terms. Mitchell earned a BA (1980) in painting from the University of Dallas. He moved to Japan to teach English and stayed for three years, apprenticing with a traditional production potter and studying calligraphy. In 1988, he earned a Masters of Fine Arts degree in printmaking at the Tyler School of Art and Architecture in Philadelphia. In 2012, the Henry Art Gallery in Seattle organized a retrospective exhibition “Like a Valentine: The Art of Jeffry Mitchell.”

This work is the first of several art pieces involving two parts: a glass treasure chest hidden on Pilchuck’s campus, and a print in the form of a map designed to locate it. He currently lives and works out of his studio in Killaloe, Canada, creating pieces that bring the past of glass together with themes of the present using traditional techniques with a modern twist. He marries and reconstructs form, function and design with an aim to create discussion. Grodet also lectures and teaches glassblowing, flameworking and enameling techniques. His work is in private collections across Europe and North America and can be seen at the Corning Museum and the Art Institute of Chicago.

Kelly earned her BFA in Glass from the University of Hawaii. They’ve had 18 solo museum exhibitions, completed eight major public art projects and have participated in four biennales. Bolitas y Veronese 12 x 6 x 6 inches 2024 Blown glass Iván Carmona, born in 1973, is an American artist raised in Puerto Rico where he developed a strong, visual vocabulary of images that have come to influence his work today, including representations of Spanish colonial architecture, dense colorful vegetation, and complex textures and patterns. Through the use of tropical landscapes and traditional cultural idiosyncrasy, one can see how deeply Carmona identifies with the structure and beauty of his home. Exactly Right 11.5 x 8 x 2 inches 2024, Signed Enameled, kiln-formed and cold worked glass Paul Messink has been creating painted, multi-layered panels since 2011. His focus changed in 2024 from moody landscapes to more colorful geometric patterns and abstract images. A portion of each image is painted by hand on multiple layers, often using 15 to 20 layers in each artwork. After the layers are complete, they are fired in a kiln at a low temperature to burn on the enamel, then the layers are stacked and fired again to nearly 1500°F to fuse the layers into a single, thick panel that can be more than two inches thick. Messink has won numerous Best in Show and first place awards.

Glossary of Terms BITS Pieces of molten glass snipped off a blowpipe or punty and applied hot to a glass form. BOROSILICATE A type of glass containing boron oxide that is highly resistant to thermal shocks. Commonly used in flameworking. CANE Thin rods of glass, usually with a twisted pattern in multiple colors used to add pattern to blown glass. DICHROIC Manufactured glass that is one color when seen by reflected light and another color when light shines through it. The effect can be achieved by applying a dichroic coating to glass that otherwise would not have this property. ELECTROPLATE The process of adhering metal to glass by dipping the glass into an electrically charged solution. ETCH To create a design by cutting away the surface of finished glass with a tool or by treating it with acid. FLAMEWORKING OR LAMPWORKING The process of using a gas-fueled torch or lamp to heat glass rods for sculpting, blowing and beadmaking. FUSE To melt together two or more pieces of glass in a kiln. GRAAL A glassblowing technique wherein a thick “blank” or core form is blown, usually with two or more layers of color. The blank is then engraved, bringing out the underlying color, much as is done with a cameo. The engraved blank is subsequently reheated and blown to its full shape. HOT CAST To ladle hot glass from a furnace into a mold made of sand, steel, or plaster. INCALMO A glassblowing process that joins two or more bubbles of hot glass together, resulting in defined bands of color in a vessel or object.
INSCISO A technique for patterning the surface of glass by creating deep incisions, usually with handengraving tools.
SANDBLAST To blow or blast sand onto a piece, etching away layers of glass. Masking is used to create patterns.
KILN A high-temperature electric oven used for casting, fusing and slumping glass.
SANDCAST To ladle hot glass into a formed mold made of specialized sand.
KILN-CAST The use of a mold, usually plaster, filled with crushed glass, which is melted in a kiln to produce a solid glass form.
SCAVO Corrosive chemical material applied to the surface of hot glass that gives the final piece a matte finish.
LAMINATE To use heat or glue to join pieces of glass.
SCRAFFITTO The technique of adding color to the surface of glass and then scratching it away, causing a reverse image to appear.
LAMPWORKING See flameworking. LOST WAX A method of casting whereby a wax or wax-coated model is embedded in clay and then baked so that the wax melts and is “lost,” leaving a mold into which hot glass is poured. The mold must be broken in order to retrieve the cast object. MOLDBLOWN Glass formed into a shape by being blown into a mold, typically made of wood, metal or plaster. MURRINE Patterned glass cane cut into sections in order to form small disks that are used in decorating glass or constructing glass forms. OVERLAY A thin layer of clear or colored glass on the outside of a piece.
SHARD A small fragment of glass. Colored shards may be melted into a piece for decoration. SLUMP To heat a sheet of glass in a kiln until it is soft enough to assume the shape of a mold without becoming molten. SMALTI A soft, intensely colored Venetian glass that is chipped into squares for use in creating traditional mosaics. THREADS Thin strands of glass, usually colored, that may be added to the glass in a variety of ways for different effects. VITREOGRAPHY The process of creating a print from a glass plate.
OFF-HAND Formed freehand on the end of a punty or blowpipe. No mold is used.
WRAP A strand of glass, typically but not always of a contrasting color, applied hot to a vessel.
PÂTE DE VERRE From French, meaning “glass paste.” The paste is made from crushed glass and enamel paint. It is applied to the surface of a mold and fired in a kiln at high temperature.
ZANFIRICO A multi-colored cane made by gathering a bundle of rods of different colors, and heating it until it is soft. The bundle is attached to two pontils and elongated by drawing. At the same time, the bundle is twisted to produce a spiral pattern. Zanfirico is a synonym for vetro a retorti.
ROLL-UP In this process, multiple pieces of flat glass are fused into a tile. The tile is reheated, rolled up onto a gather, and then blown into a three-dimensional object.
