Foreword

It is with great pleasure that I welcome and introduce you to the 2014 See it Live Theatre Season. It’s a year of high quality shows from our best local, state and national performers.

The booklet is a varied selection of exciting shows to suit a wide range of tastes. There is classical music, drama, classical ballet, circus, music theatre, contemporary dance, world music and more.

The See It Live Theatre Season is presented by Rockhampton Regional Council, in cooperation with Playing Australia and other State and Federal funding bodies.

Rockhampton Regional Council is very proud of the role it plays in all facets of building a more livable community, and its performing arts program is the envy of many regional centres.

Of course, it is not all about bringing shows to Rockhampton – our annual musical is a fine example of not only the talent in our local community but in the support the community shows by attending.

Oceania; a nation perpetually at war, where cameras watch every move and Thought Police roam the streets. A place Winston Smith calls home.

By day, Winston is an editor at the Ministry of Truth, rewriting history to align the past with the radical political agenda of the ruling party and its illusive leader, Big Brother. By night, Winston pursues a forbidden love affair with the mysterious Julia in an attempt to rebel against the oppressive regime set down by the party and maintain some control over his otherwise totally controlled life.

When Winston and Julia are discovered, they are violently separated, detained and prepared for conversion. Locked in the Ministry of Love and interrogated by the quietly terrifying O’Brien, Winston is beaten, manipulated and subjected to sickening torture in an attempt to make him reject dreams of liberation and understand that free thought and logic is the only true enemy.

From the team that brought you Animal Farm, this new stage adaptation brings George Orwell’s final novel screaming into the present.

One of the world’s most exciting young pianists, Avan Yu, sprang to international attention when he triumphed at the 2012 Sydney International Piano Competition, winning first prize and nine specialist prizes.

Rockhampton music lovers experienced the young pianist’s first concert tour in 2012.

Since then, he has performed as soloist with orchestras around the world in venues as diverse as the Carnegie Weill Recital Hall, the Concertgebouw in Amsterdam, Salle Cortot in Paris, and the Nacional Auditorio de Musica in Madrid.

He is an avid chamber musician and has collaborated with celebrated musicians such as Yo-Yo Ma, Cuarteto Casals, Armida Quartett, Johannes Moser, and Geoff Nuttall.

His Rockhampton recital will include: works by Beethoven, Debussy and Chopin.

Thought you knew Grimm’s fairy tales? Think again.

Little Red Riding Hood meets Trainspotting in this wicked retelling of classic bedtime stories.

Helpmann Award winner Ursula Yovich (Australia, Jindabyne, The Secret River) plays a cast of sideline female characters who’ve been updated and dropped into the gutters and alleyways of bleak Australian life.

From one of Australia’s most original contemporary playwrights, Vanessa Bates, The Magic Hour is a gutsy one-woman comedy told with dark humour and soulful song.

A night of stories told at twilight with werewolves and a touch of magic.

This acclaimed production is the swansong performance from Fremantle’s Deckchair Theatre.

From the internationally acclaimed Sydney Dance Company comes an exuberant, high-octane fusion of dance, language, sound and light from Artistic Director Rafael Bonachela.

With their multiple award-winning work, 2 One Another, Sydney Dance Company weaves a vivid, exultant and sensual study of human interaction – charting the myriad actions and reactions, gestures and relationships, connections and disconnections that make up a life.

Set against a pulsing, pixelated backdrop, the piece thrums with a driving, baroque-meets-electronica soundtrack, penned by the able hand of composer Nick Wales. Shot through with the exquisite poetry fragments of Samuel Webster, this is dance at its most engaging and multi-dimensional.

Featuring some of the best dancers in the country, 2 One Another is an exuberant celebration of the power of movement from a choreographer and a company at the height of their powers.

The Afro Sound of the Seychelles

Seychelles islander Grace Barbé is the real deal, a genuinely exotic world music star for the 21st century, with the talent, looks and voice to match.

Grace’s soulful music reflects and celebrates the diverse cultural influences of her Indian Ocean heritage (African, Asian and European).

Having already performed at leading Australian and international music festivals, Grace is already well on the way to becoming the next diva of world music in the tradition of Angelique Kidjo and Miriam Makeba.

Grace lights up the stage with a vibrant and engaging presence. Her voice is a remarkably powerful instrument, and as a songwriter she has a rare and natural gift for rhythm and melody. Grace plays guitar and bass and sings in three languages; English, Kreol and French.

A colourful and energetic fusion of tropical island rhythms with African percussion, reggae, pop, rock and latin flavours, Grace’s “Afro-Kreol” sound is original, fresh and funky.

Circus Oz 2014

Circus Oz, Australia’s world famous globe roving circus, is on its way back to Central Queensland with its own special blend of exuberant raw spectacle and danger for the sake of it!

Since we saw them last, Circus oz have blitzed the USA with a five week season on 42nd Street in New York before touring the States to great reviews and standing ovations.

Now they’re heading back to Rockhampton, and they’re risking their necks in even more new stunt-jumping chaos.

There will be, as ever, strong women, dare-devil acrobats, death-defying aerialists and beautiful jugglers, a cranking live multi-skilled band, all with a subversive antipodean vaudeville and cabaret twist.

With bold, flashy skills, electrifying live music, and that trademark irreverent spirit, Circus Oz 2014 will have audiences on their feet, baying for more!

When King Henry V is manipulated by church advisors, taunted by French royalty and betrayed by English nobles, he has all the ammunition he needs to lash out and invade France. Or does he? Having executed conspirators, and vanquished enemy forces in Harfleur, Henry’s army is ‘weak and sickly’ as it staggers towards a showdown at Agincourt.

The night before battle, the king endures a long dark night of the soul, where he hears first-hand about the fears and frailties of his outnumbered soldiers. But Henry holds one last weapon: the power of words. And it may just save his men, his country and himself.

Damien Ryan’s courageous production of Henry V promises to be an unflinching examination of the questions that Shakespeare raises; about political spin, patriotism, religion, class, monarchy, brotherhood and how leaders respond during times of crisis.

But thanks to her Fairy Godmother, her life of hardship is magically transformed. Making a dazzling entrance to the royal ball, she captures the attention of all and the heart of the Prince. Yet this beautiful dream must end at midnight, and in her haste to depart, she leaves one jewelled slipper behind…

Queensland Ballet’s new production of Ben Stevenson’s Cinderella is charming, humorous and blissfully romantic. Kinship

Rekindling the Aboriginal culture of Australia, internationally acclaimed Bangarra Dance Theatre presents an original and breathtaking theatrical experience: Kinship by award-winning choreographer Stephen Page.

Kinship opens with Brolga, a creation story inspired by the totemic systems in Australian Aboriginal culture, where every person is assigned a creature totem related to their clan. Set in North East Arnhem Land, a young girl ventures out before sunset and finds herself on a brolga feeding ground.

As she is challenged by her totemic temptation, she takes us on a journey of exploring relationships between humans and creatures, reflecting on the intrinsic spirituality of the natural world.

The performance continues with ID, investigating what it means to be Aboriginal in the 21st century, asking important questions of identity. In a series of dramatic and humorous observations, Stephen Page contemplates human nature in modern society where skin colour can drive perceptions rather than embracing differences. This bold dance theatre work celebrates the resilience of Australian Aboriginal culture in both its traditional and contemporary forms.

Deferred payment is available with a credit card only. This means that you commit to buying a subscription and are guaranteed good seats and discounted prices, but you pay for your tickets 14 days before each of the shows you will be attending. This means that you don’t have to pay a lump sum at the beginning of the year for all your tickets.

Your credit card will have the price of the tickets debited 14 days before each show and you can pick up the tickets anytime from then on. If you use this method you are committed to buying the tickets and can’t withdraw part way through the season. To help make your visits to the theatre more enjoyable we have compiled this information: Location and facilities The Pilbeam Theatre is located at the corner of Victoria Parade and Cambridge Street, Rockhampton. A large car park is situated at the rear of the theatre, with access from Bolsover Street.

There is a passenger drop off point at the front of the theatre, although for people with mobility impairment, access and parking are available at the Cambridge Street side of the theatre. There is a lift from foyer to Box Office level. The Pilbeam Theatre can accommodate a number of patrons with special seating needs.

Please ensure you advise box office staff as soon as possible to avoid disappointment.

Bar and Foyer On arrival at the theatre or at interval you can relax with a drink in our bar or just catch up with friends in the foyer. Pre-ordering your interval drinks will save you time at interval. Ask the bar staff about this service on arrival.

Restaurant For lunch, dinner and high tea, Delizie is the place to be at the Pilbeam Theatre. Phone 4927 8316 for reservations.

For the comfort of other patrons Programs start promptly at the advertised start time and latecomers will not be admitted until a suitable break in the performance.

Smoking is not allowed in any part of the Pilbeam Theatre. If you wish to smoke, please do so in the designated smoking areas which are located in the rear carpark on the other side of Quay Lane and on the kerb on Cambridge Street between Victoria Parade and the Cambridge Street entrance.

The use of cameras and recording devices is distracting to other patrons and may breach copyright. Penalties for infringement are severe.
