Welcome Welcome to Spotlight, the newsletter of Rockhampton Venues and Events. Inside, you’ll find a variety of events at the Pilbeam Theatre, Rockhampton Showgrounds and other venues. Tickets for events listed here are on sale through the Pilbeam Theare Box Office, Dial’n’ Charge on 4927 4111 or on line at www.seeitlive.com.au For showgrounds events contact the organizations listed with the event. Spotlight is also available online.

FRIENDS OF THE THEATRE If you enjoy the theatre, why not become a Friend of the Theatre?

The Pilbeam Theatre is supported by a dedicated group of volunteers, the Friends of the Theatre. Friends volunteer to work in areas such as the bar, candy bar, ushering and program selling. When they work, Friends of the Theatre receive Performance Work Vouchers which can be exchanged for events at the Pilbeam Theatre. Unlimited voucher seats are available to events shown in Spotlight with a blue star.

For other events voucher seats are limited to a total of six seats per performance. Friends of the Theatre also receive discounts on ticket prices to many events at the Theatre. Further details as well as membership forms are available from the Box Office

GENERAL INFORMATION Theatre programs start promptly at the advertised start time and latecomers will not be admitted until a suitable break in the performance. Smoking is not allowed in any part of the Pilbeam Theatre or other Council venues. The use of cameras and recording devices during performances is illegal and penalties for infringement of copyright in this way are severe. Please ensure all mobile phones are switched off before entering the auditorium.

One Act Wonders Lee Harvey Oswald, a philandering husband and the Tooth Fairy all feature in the latest production by Rockhampton Little Theatre with a guest performance by Yeppoon Little Theatre. Combined Schools Concerts Over 1200 instrumental music students from state schools in the Rockhampton, Capricorn Coast and Mt Morgan areas will perform in the 2011 Combined Schools Concert. Concert bands, string orchestras, big bands and small ensembles of different age groups from a combination of schools will perform each night.

Shades of Blue exhibition “Shades of Blue” is the title of Central Queensland Contemporary Artists’ exhibition in whcih the artists explore the many possibilities of producing an artwork within the limitations of one colour.

The group will also hold two art workshops on 29 October and 5 November. Workshops $30 per day.

Punk Rock Documentary Local musicians, songwriters, in fact anyone interested in the local music scene is invited to a social meet up and screening of the documentary A Piss In the Ocean, the story of the punk rock scene in Rockhampton in th 1980s, at the Walter Reid Cultural Centre in November. Mathinna Inspired by a young girl’s journey between two cultures, Mathinna traces the history of a young Aboriginal girl removed from her traditional life, adopted into western colonial society to be ultimately returned to the fragments of her original heritage. Mathinna became the archetype of the ‘stolen child’ and, in this brand new work, Bangarra Dance Theatre recreates her powerful story of vulnerability and searching in an era of confusion and intolerance. Presented by Rockhampton Regional Council. Part of the 2011 See It Live Theatre Season.

Dance Infusion Dance Infusion students are set to hit the stage with their annual dancing concert for 2011. The concert is a spectacular display of many facets of dance including tap, modern jazz, classical ballet, contemporary, acrobatics & hip hop. This year’s theme Around the World is a journey of dance through many places & cultures around the world. It’s a fun & exciting way for all Dance Infusion students to present what they have achieved in dancing and is a true testament of the work teachers, parents and student do all year. Come along and enjoy this wonderful display.

It’s a Celebration Dance Star Studio celebrates its 10th year of dance with its end of year concert ‘It’s A Celebration’. Students will showcase a variety of dances in jazz, contemporary, tap, classical ballet, hip hop, cabaret, novelty and song & dance. There will be a special Christmas segment where all students of the studio are involved. All items are especially choreographed for the concert. There is something for everyone so don’t miss out!

Frenchville Spotlight Concert

Frenchville State School’s much anticipated annual Spotlight Concert returns to the Pilbeam Theatre on Wednesday 23 November to showcase its performing arts program. The Spotlight Concert will feature performances from the Choirs, School Band and Strings Orchestra. Students from Preparatory Year to Year 7 will delight the audience with their enthusiasm and love of the performing arts.

The Beetles and Classic Creedence It’s a triple bill of great rock and roll! Featuring Classic Creedence, hailed as the best Creedence Clearwater Revival tribue in Australia, you’re sure to feel like you’re at a CCR concert with all your favourite hits. The Beetles will bring back the sounds of the sixties – with the show based on the early Beatles and contains all of the hits you know and love from The Fab Four in their heyday. Showcase The very talented students of the Beverley Prange Dance Centre will perform ‘Showcase’ at the Pilbeam Theatre in November. The concert features students aged from 3 to 17 years performing a variety of dance styles including classical, tap, jazz and national.

Debbie’s Dance Studio Debbie’s Dance Studio’s 8th annual concert will showcase 330 dance students and cheerleaders. This year there will be two concerts to show all our talent, a junior and senior concert. The junior concert will have performances from ages 3 to 13 years old and the seniors concert will be 10 years and above. A variety of styles will be on display in both concerts, including, modern dance, cheerleading, hip hop and contemporary. The dance school has always had the motto of ‘putting the fun back into dance’ and this will definitely come through in these high energy concerts.

Celebrating 30 years Narelle Aspinall’s Capricorn School of Dancing will perform its end of year concert Celebrating 30 Years at the Pilbeam Theatre in December. There will be a variety of dance styles on display.

Former Royal Ballet School (London) dancer Karen Donovan has choreographed a special piece for the concert.

Oxford Street Party For the fifth consecutive year, The Oxford Street Party held in Rockhampton will host some of Australia’s most popular acts over the New Year period.
