The Rockhampton Eisteddfod continues in May and June.

Welcome to Spotlight, the newsletter of Rockhampton Venues and Events. Inside, you’ll find a variety of events at the Pilbeam Theatre, Rockhampton Showgrounds and other venues. Tickets for events listed here are on sale through the Pilbeam Theare Box Office, Dial’n’ Charge on 4927 4111 or on line at www.pilbeamtheatre.com.au For showgrounds events contact the organizations listed with the event. FRIENDS OF THE THEATRE If you enjoy the theatre, why not become a Friend of the Theatre?

Friends of the Theatre is an organisation where members volunteer to work in various aspects of the theatre such as ushering, bar, candy bar and program selling. Friends receive discounts to many of the shows listed in Spotlight, and also receive this newsletter mailed direct to them. Each time a Friend of the Theatre works they receive a Performance Work Voucher, which is exchanged for tickets to events. Unlimited seats are available in exchange for Performance Work Vouchers on events in Spotlight bearing the blue star symbol. For other events, voucher seats are limited to a total of six seats per performance. Further details as well as membership forms are available from the Box Office.

GENERAL INFORMATION Theatre programs start promptly at the advertised start time and latecomers will not be admitted until a suitable break in the performance. Smoking is not allowed in any part of the Pilbeam Theatre or other Council venues. The use of cameras and recording devices during performances is illegal and penalties for infringement of copyright in this way are severe. Please ensure all mobile phones are switched off before entering the auditorium.

Twilight Movie: Finding Nemo

Hollywood Classics: The Third Man

May’s Twilight Movie is a fatherson underwater adventure featuring Nemo, a boy clownfish, stolen from his coral reef home. His timid father must then travel to Sydney and search Sydney Harbour to find Nemo. A Rockhampton Regional Council event. Refreshments on sale.

Art Anytime - Beading Blitz with Joy Swindells

Australia’s National Beef Exposition is one of the world’s great beef cattle events. Beef Australia 2012 will attract more than 75,000 local, interstate and international visitors who come to see for themselves how innovation, collaboration, inspiration and celebration collide for one great week from 7 to 12 May. With cattlemen exhibiting their top breeds as well as a huge trade fair and displays, property tours, seminar presentations, social events and dinners, utilising all the Showgrounds’ pavilions and outdoor areas, there is something for everyone. The highlight of Beef 2012 is The Man From Snowy River on 7 to 9 May and the finale concert featuring Kasey Chambers on Friday 11 May.

Melbourne Comedy Festival Roadshow 2012 Stuffing one of the world’s largest comedy festivals into the one show is no easy feat, but the Melbourne International Comedy Festival has done just that with Roadshow 2012. It’s an ‘all killer, no filler’ event.

This event has been running for the last 10 years at the Showgrounds and is well worth a look from all who like a good thriller or fiction novel. Thousands of books to choose but be quick they sell out fast!

The rich watercolours of Albert Namatjira’s story are transformed into a momentous theatrical event in Big hART’s production of Namatjira, a groundbreaking new Australian work by Scott Rankin starring Trevor Jamieson and Derik Lynch. Utilising Jamieson’s elegant physicality, and the music of internationally renowned Genevieve Lacey, this story captures the intense beauty, depth, opportunism, mateship and injustice that has shaped our country. Before our eyes, the grandchildren of Albert Namatjira – third generation watercolour artists – assist with the re-telling of his life, filling the stage with a huge landscape drawing of their desert country. El Caballo Blanco: The Dance of the White Stallions

Cloudland

The magnificent white stallions of Spain are dancing their way through Australia. World-renowned riding master Rene Gasser who, with the experience of seven generations, has recreated an event only previously seen at the famous riding schools in Vienna and Spain. The horses of Spain are some of the most celebrated in history, favoured for centuries

by European royalty, equestrian riders and bullfighters and this performance will celebrate the tradition, athleticism and grace of these revered creatures. Along with the magnificent stallions, Spanish flamenco dancers will feature in authentic costumes accompanied by the mellow notes of a guitar to bring the sights and sounds of Spain a heartbeat away.

Let the spirited dancers of Queensland Ballet whisk you back in time to Cloudland! An iconic Brisbane building for decades, the Cloudland ballroom was the focus of the city’s social life. Romantic, nostalgic, and humorous, Cloudland is based on real-life stories of romance, friendship and wartime relationships. With music performed live on stage by Sean O’Boyle and his fabulous band, the production gives an energetic and dynamic portrayal of life, love and dance in Brisbane from the 1940s to the 1980s. Choreographed by François Klaus, this wonderfully entertaining ballet was a sell-out hit at the 2004 Brisbane Festival, and has since charmed audiences on a critically acclaimed tour to six cities across Germany and Switzerland. Tales of the Underground

Shifting Sand

Three short plays about mining by Angela Betzien, Victoria Carless and Rod Ainsworth. Tales of the Underground explores the social impacts of mining through the experiences of three playwrights-in-residence in the ex-boom towns of Mount Morgan, Mount Perry and Cracow.

Given only three weeks, the playwrights uncovered the stories that shaped the history of these communities – tales of vision, sacrifice, love and madness – and examined what can be learned from these mining towns of the past. Director Leticia Caceres, Dramaturg Peter Matheson.

Shifting Sand is a powerful evocation of the ocean’s many faces performed by Australia’s leading Taiko drumming group, TaikOz. TaikOz’s ethereal sounds, thunderous taiko drumming, dynamic movement and dance seeks to capture the beauty, majesty and force of the ocean. From the delicate play of light on the surface of the sea to the raging fury of winter storms. A TaikOz performance is more than just the beating of drums: it incorporates a complete world of drumming, song and dance that harks back to ancient Buddhist and Shinto rituals. Contains high volume music.
