FRIENDS OF THE THEATRE If you enjoy the theatre, why not become a Friend of the Theatre? Friends of the Theatre is an organisation where members volunteer to work in various aspects of the theatre such as ushering, bar, candy bar and program selling. Friends receive discounts to many of the shows listed in Spotlight, and also receive this newsletter mailed direct to them. Each time a Friend of the Theatre works they receive a Performance Work Voucher, which is exchanged for tickets to events. Unlimited seats are available in exchange for Performance Work Vouchers on events in Spotlight bearing the blue star symbol. For other events, voucher seats are limited to a total of six seats per performance. Further details as well as membership forms are available from the Box Office.

The Wiggles Rock & Roll Preschool The Wiggles are back with their new show, Rock & Roll Preschool, featuring songs from their new Rock n’ Roll Preschool CD and DVD. You’ll shake to That’s the Sound of Rock & Roll, rise and shine with Wake Up!, swing along as you Dance with Emma and be the coolest kid in preschool with I Want a Leather Jacket. The Rock & Roll Preschool tour will get you all shook up, mixing some of these new hits with Wiggles classics such as Hot Potato!, Rock – a –Bye Your Bear and Do the Propeller. Walter Reid Cultural Centre Open Day

If you have ever wanted to learn more about or maybe even have a try at wire wrapping, badge making, brooches, pottery embroidery, painting or many other artforms, then come on down to the Walter Reid Cultural Centre’s Open Day. History tells us that Dan and Ned Kelly never saw eye to eye and there is also a myth that Dan escaped the fire at Glenrowan and disappeared to Queensland. This makes for a brilliantly charged premise, explored beautifully on stage in Queensland Theatre Company’s Kelly. In 80 gripping minutes, the play weaves Kelly fact, theory and myth while exploring masculinity, brotherhood and the dangerous dynamic of mateship. The play centres around Ned Kelly’s final night in prison. He is interrupted by the arrival of his brother, Dan, disguised as a priest. Supposed killed at the siege of Glenrowan, Dan is intent on moving north to Queensland and forgetting his past. To do so, he needs Ned’s blessing and forgiveness.

Solo bikes are back at the Rockhampton Showgrounds! MEM Handlebar Hero’s Speedway Bike Spectacular features riders from Victoria, New South Wales and Queensland competing in a two day 60-race event. Xanadu

Handmade Expo

The Cathedral College rolls back the clock to the 1980s in JulyAugust with their production of the musical Xanadu. Based on the 1980 cult classic movie starring Olivia Newton John and featuring music by the Electric Light Orchestra (ELO), this stage adaptation premiered on Broadway in 2007. It retains hits from the original movie (including Magic, I’m Alive, Suddenly and Xanadu) and includes additional ELO songs Strange Magic and Evil Woman. Olivia Newton John’s hit Have You Ever Been Mellow also features in the production. Local performing identity Katrina Christensen will bring the musical to life with all the fashion, hairdos, leg warmers (and roller skates!) of the era, along with a great cast of singers, dancers, actors and musicians from The Cathedral College.

Morning Melodies Lucky Starr The iconic Australian 60’s recording star famous for I’ve Been Everywhere, Lucky Starr performs in our August Morning Melodies. Lucky started his rock and roll career in the late 1950s as the lead singer of the Hepparays. He was a regular on Bandstand and Six O’Clock Rock, the national televison shows that launched many a career of Australia’s rock and roll musicians. Dark acts result in darker consequences. And there is little that’s darker and more complicated than the act of revenge, in Bell Shakespeare’s Hamlet. A family torn apart by murder, a son burdened with the truth and the task of avenging his father, and a country on the brink of war. Anguish, passion and desperation collide in this tragic telling of Hamlet, the Prince of Denmark who is tormented by the impossibility of his dilemma, and who remains one of theatre’s most fascinating characters. Damien Ryan, returning to Bell Shakespeare following the critically acclaimed Henry V in 2014, has created a new production of Hamlet, infused with the passion, contemplation and emotion that Shakespeare’s compelling poetry cries out for.

The Imperial Russian Ballet Company return to Australia with Swan Lake...the most loved classical ballet of them all. This masterpiece ballet is presented in three acts and follows the original storyline. Subtle revisions and variations have been introduced by Gediminas Taranda, Artistic Director of the Imperial Russian Ballet Company. Swan Lake crosses the world of magic and mystical creatures with that of the real world. It is a story where the virtues of love and forgiveness in the end conquer evil and betrayal.
