Foreword It is with great pleasure I welcome the people of Rockhampton Region and visitors to the 2012 See It Live Theatre Season.

Once again I am proud to announce a year of high quality shows, chosen from our best local, state and national performers here at the Pilbeam Theatre.

Rockhampton has long been at the forefront of regional performing arts and I am therefore excited that Rockhampton is to be part of Cultural Places, a national pilot program for developing the arts in regional communities.

Cultural Places is an initiative of the Australia Council, delivered in association with Arts Queensland and Rockhampton Regional Council.

It is a program that will work across artforms and will provide many exciting opportunities not only for artists but for the community as a whole, including festivals, exhibitions, performances and workshops.

The benefits will be felt well beyond the three year life of the program.

You will hear a lot more about Cultural Places as the program progresses.

Finally, it would be remiss of me not to recognise those committed donors and bequests to the Central Queensland Performing Arts Foundation. To those people, I say thank you.

April’s Fool

By David Burton Director: Lewis Jones A true story of love, family, strength and the choices we make.

In April 2009, two weeks short of his nineteenth birthday Toowoomba teenager Kristjan Terauds died due to complications from illicit drug use.

Inspired by ‘April’s Fool’, an account of his son’s death by Kristjan’s father, the Empire Theatre commissioned award-winning playwright, David Burton to bring this story to the stage.

Using the words of Kristjan’s friends and family interviewed over many months the result is a powerful mix of sadness, loss, and ultimately love, laced with humour.

April’s Fool promises to be a thought-provoking and ultimately optimistic reflection on how we all live our lives.

A theatre experience that reflects Kristjan himself – loving, warm, generous, open, honourable, gentle, complex and provocative.

By Scott Rankin A Big hART production, created with the Namatjira Family The rich watercolours of Albert Namatjira’s story are transformed into a momentous theatrical event in Namatjira, a groundbreaking new Australian work by Scott Rankin starring Trevor Jamieson and Derik Lynch.

Utilising Jamieson’s elegant physicality, and the music of internationally renowned Genevieve Lacey, this story captures the intense beauty, depth, opportunism, mateship and injustice that has shaped our country. Namatjira is more than a night at the theatre; this is an experience of art, live on stage.

Before our eyes, the grandchildren of Albert Namatjira – third generation watercolour artists – assist with the re-telling of his life, filling the stage with a huge landscape drawing of their desert country.

Albert Namatjira’s achingly beautiful watercolours introduced the lounge rooms of Australian suburbia to the exquisite beauty of our central desert heartland. In a similar way, this sweeping narrative acts as a window through which we can see ourselves, and our nation, as clearly as the landscapes he gave to us.

An iconic Brisbane building for decades, the Cloudland ballroom was the focus of the city’s social life. Countless romances blossomed under its spinning mirror balls. Romantic, nostalgic, and humorous, Cloudland is based on real-life stories of romance, friendship and war-time relationships. With music performed live on stage by Sean O’Boyle and his fabulous band, the production gives an energetic and dynamic portrayal of life, love and dance in Brisbane from the 1940s to the 1980s.

Choreographed by François Klaus, this wonderfully entertaining ballet was a sell-out hit at the 2004 Brisbane Festival, and has since charmed audiences on a critically acclaimed tour to six cities across Germany and Switzerland.

Shifting Sand Shifting Sand is a new work composed by TaikOz member Graham Hilgendorf. Inspired by the beach and ocean, Shifting Sand is a powerful evocation of the ocean’s many faces.

TaikOz’s ethereal sounds, thunderous taiko drumming, dynamic movement and dance seeks to capture the beauty, majesty and force of the ocean.

From the delicate play of light on the surface of the sea to the raging fury of winter storms.

‘Taiko’ is the Japanese word for ‘drum’ and TaikOz is Australia’s leading taiko drumming group. A TaikOz performance is more than just the beating of drums: it incorporates a complete world of drumming, song and dance that harks back to ancient Buddhist and Shinto rituals. It is a reflection of contemporary musical life, irrespective of nationality.

A TaikOz performance is not just for the ears and eyes, but is felt throughout the entire body. It is a truly visceral experience.

The Mikado Conductor: Brian Castles-Onion Director: Stuart Maunder A world of forbidden love and delightful satire.! A true romantic comedy, Gilbert and Sullivan’s The Mikado is fresh, fun, cheeky … and in English.

Set in a Japan that never actually existed, this hilarious parody unfolds in the mythical town of Titipu, a place where flirting has become a capital crime – punishable by death.

Disguised as a travelling musician, Nanki-Poo, the runaway son of the Mikado (the Emperor of Japan) meets and falls in love with Yum-Yum, the young ward of Ko-Ko, a low-cost tailor in the town of Titipu, to whom she is betrothed. All seems lost for the travelling troubadour, that is, until he hears that Ko-Ko has been condemned to death for the crime of flirting.

Gilbert and Sullivan’s spicy dip into the world of subterfuge and political satire has been thrilling audiences for generations, but seems even more poignant today. In an incurably bizarre world, this colourful production of The Mikado proves that laughter is still the best medicine.

Performed with the Queensland Symphony Orchestra Ensemble and the Opera Queensland Ensemble.

Pay Later Deferred payment is available with a credit card only. This means that you commit to buying a subscription and are guaranteed good seats and discounted prices, but you pay for your tickets ten days before each of the shows you will be attending. To help make your visits to the theatre more enjoyable we have compiled this information: Location and facilities The Pilbeam Theatre is located at the corner of Victoria Parade and Cambridge Street, Rockhampton. A large car park is situated at the rear of the theatre, with access from Bolsover Street. There is a passenger drop off point at the front of the theatre, although for people with mobility impairment, access and parking are available at the Cambridge Street side of the theatre. There is a lift from foyer to Box Office level to further assist people with a disability. The Pilbeam Theatre can accommodate a number of patrons with special seating needs. Please ensure you advise box office staff as soon as possible to avoid disappointment.

Bar and Foyer On arrival at the theatre or at interval you can relax with a drink in our bar or just catch up with friends in the foyer. Pre-ordering your interval drinks will save you time at interval. Ask the bar staff about this service on arrival.

Restaurant For lunch, dinner and high tea, Delizie is the place to be at the Pilbeam Theatre. Phone 4927 8316 for reservations.

For the comfort of other patrons Programs start promptly at the advertised start time and latecomers will not be admitted until a suitable break in the performance.

Smoking is not allowed in any part of the Pilbeam Theatre. If you wish to smoke, please do so in the designated smoking areas which are located in the rear carpark on the other side of Quay Lane and on the kerb on Cambridge Street between Victoria Parade and the Cambridge Street entrance.

The use of cameras and recording devices is distracting to other patrons and may breach copyright. Penalties for infringement are severe.
