Educational Institutions to Learners

“It’s important that our youth gets an opportunity to personally engage with representatives from various tertiary institutions, other learning facilities and prospective employers. This will help them make the right choices for their future”. These were the words of Alderman Ray van Rooy, Executive Mayor of Bergrivier Municipality, who stressed the importance of showcasing the different study opportunities, bursary options and requirements needed for learners to successfully enroll for their desired degree, diploma, or higher certificate. About 300 learners from various towns within the Bergrivier Municipal Area attended an annual open day, LoTYDE, in Piketberg on 29 July 2022, to get more information regarding their desired career path. LoTYDE is an acronym for ‘Leaders of Tomorrow Youth Development Expo’. It refers to the low tide of the ocean (quiet time) which is present before the high tide sets in. It’s symbolic in a sense that school is the training ground which prepares learners to make a success of their lives when they enter the “real world”. LoTYDE was established in 2015 by the Office of the Executive Mayor with the support of the Department of Education and funded by the Bergrivier Municipality. This event, which caters for high school learners between Grade 11 and 12, was hosted at the Steynville Primary School Hall in Piketberg.

The Premier of the Western Cape made a special guest appearance to encourage the youth to take charge of their lives and grab the opportunities pro-

vided. Learners from the following high schools were in attendance: Piketberg High School, Porterville High School, Steynville High School and Velddrif High School. There were several stalls which comprised of various higher institutions of learning which included Cape Peninsula University of Technology, University of Western Cape, University of South Africa, IEC, Gene Louw Traffic College, CTU Training College and West Coast College. Van Rooy mentioned that this event was designed to assist learners with one of the most fundamental decisions that they need to make in support of their careers. “The reality is that there aren’t any tertiary facilities within the Bergrivier Municipal Area, and many of these higher learning institutions are quite far away which makes it very difficult for most learners to further their studies,” he explained. This year, the sensational group called

Aidam-John and Lil Willy Music, entertained the learners by singing some of their most popular songs, and lit up the stage with their dance

moves and high energy. Ashley Pienaar, master of ceremonies, rocked the stage with his unique comedic performances and kept the crowd on their feet and glued to the stage. There were also several lucky draw prizes (electronic devices) won by learners. Each learner received a branded LoTYDE goodie bag which contained a water bottle, bottled water, snacks, and a cleaning device/stand for a cellphone.
