Pi Kappa Phi alumni help lead alumni at UT The PI Kappa Phi mission statement is—We will lead. A pillar of our strength into the future is lifelong brotherhood.

In 2008, Pi Kappa Phi Alumni help lead alumni at the University of Toledo. The picture above depicts Beta Iota Alumni Jim White (236), Mark Urrutia (320), Bob Buchman (724), Dave Mathews (755) and Dave Paprocki (728). Jim White has served as the President of the university alumni board of trustees. Mark Urrutia continues to serve as a trustee on the UT alumni board. Bob Buchman, Dave Mathews and Dave Paprocki help lead the UT alumni chapters in Dayton and Cincinnati, Joe Costello (682) serves our fraternity as director of busi-

ness affairs in Charlotte.

Brother Costello has recently volunteered to help lead the UT alumni chapter in the Carolinas.

UT. Pi Kapp Alumni initiate, Hernan Vasquez (842) has served on the board for eight years.

The final alumni group is the UT Foundation. This group is charged with raising funds for the university and recently achieved is $100 million capital campaign.

Beta Iota alumni Gene Collins (186), Lance Talmage (121), and outgoing member, Jim White (236) has helped lead this group.

The Pi Kappa Phi Toledo Alumni Corporation serves as the area alumni association as well as Beta Iota’s housing corporation.

The focus for the housing corp. traditionally has been to provide furnishings for the campus house and manage the lease with the university.

Our goal is to help refurnish the house and provide scholarship opportunities for students.

The housing corp. has been strategizing on the best way to help the student chapter.

The housing corp. has set up a tax-deductible account through the UT Foundation. This will allow alumni, and others, to contribute to Pi Kappa Phi

through a tax-deductable account. It will also count as a university contribution.

Alumni Updates (left) Army Col. Chris Barton (318) has been serving our country @ Camp Phoenix, near Kabul, Afghanistan .

Neil Chryst (459) and his wife, Rochelle, added twin girls to their family on November 2, 2007.

Gene Collins (168) has retired from Citigroup and is teaching at UT as an Executive in Residence in UT’s College of Business.

Rob Thomas (499) and his wife, Julie, added twin boys to their family August 2, 2007.

Legacies Kurt Kramp (336) joined the chapter eternal July 24 peacefully in Hospice surrounded by his family.

Mike Meabon (480) and his wife, Melissa, enjoy their family and live in Fisher Indiana.

Dave Reed (474) is an Auditor for Clifton Gunderson and married to Jennifer since 2003 and has a daughter, Adeline, 3 years old.

The Beta Iota chapter is completing the Fall 2009 semester with 42 active members. The brothers have participated in over 75 hours of community service for PUSH America. The chapter achieved 2nd place in the homecoming float building competition this past fall.

We received the Recruitment Success Award at Pi Kapp College this past summer in Charleston, South

Carolina. The chapter earned this award by initiating 30 new members over the past academic year.

We will be initiating 14 new members on December 4th, 2009. In Spring 2009 the brothers won 1st place in Songfest which is UT's longest tradition. In Spring 2010, the chapter plans to fundraise through selling t-shirts to sororities and having a "Pizza with the Pi Kapps" dinner.

Lifelong Brotherhood - Do you hear your calling?

Rush, date nights, float building, intramural sports. Do you remember all of these great times?

some important alumni projects and don't worry, you won’t be in it all by yourself.

None of these things just happened by themselves. It took a committee or at least a few interested Pi Kapps to make it happen.

Founders’ Day Committee - This will be made up of student and alumni to plan our annual Founders’ Day.

Website Committee - We are reestablishing an alumni website. We need help so all you “techies” can put your skills to good use.

Alumni “Spotlite” - Dr. Lance Talmage

Besides being a physician, Brother Talmage is a retired Brigadier General in the Army

Beta Iota Alumnus Dr. Lance Talmage (121) was presented with the prestigious “Gold T” Awards from the UT Alumni Association at homecoming this year.

This award is presented to a UT alum in recognition of outstanding achievement in his/her field of endeavor while providing leadership and noteworthy service to the community. Brother Lance A. Talmage MD of Toledo is a 1960 graduate of UT’s Engineering College and is the director of ambulatory gynecology at The Toledo Hospital’s Center for Health Services, while serving as a clinical professor at The University of Toledo College of Medicine. He earned his medical degree from the University of Michigan in 1964.

can Board of OB/GYN, Dr. Talmage was in private practice from 1973 to 1999 before assuming his current position at Toledo Hospital. A delegate to the American Medical Association, he served as president of the Ohio State Medical Association from 1998 to 1999, as president of the ToledoLucas County Academy of Medicine in 1994 and as president of the medical staff at Toledo Hospital from 1989 to 1991. He was appointed to the State Medical Board of Ohio in 1999 and reappointed in 2004 and again in 2009. Dr. Talmage has served as secretary of the State Medical Board for seven years and was recently elected to the National Board of Directors of the Federation

of State Medical Boards. A retired Brigadier General in the U.S. Army, Dr. Talmage has been decorated with the Legion of Merit and the Order of Military Medical Merit. Along with his wife, Dee, Dr. Talmage is a member of UT’s Heritage Society, Lannon Society and President’s Club. He served as president of The University of Toledo Alumni Association during the 2000-01 school years and in 2002 was presented the Blue T Award. He is a member of the UT Foundation Board of Trustees.

Pi Kapps ride across the county for people with disabilities Later that afternoon, the team interacted with residents of the Sunshine Children’s Home day camp.

State Senator, Mark Wagoner, presented a state commendation during a “Kids on the Block” show to youngsters at UT’s Apple Tree Nursery. The puppet show, presented by the cyclists, illustrates the abilities of other kids with disabilities.

Pi Kappa Phi Push American 2008 “Journey of Hope” Toledo Breakfast Every August, Pi Kapp cyclists participating in the Journey of Hope, arrived in Toledo as part of a nine-week, 4,000mile cycling event across the country to raise funds and awareness for people with disabilities.

greeted by UT Provost, Dr. Rosemary Haggett, Mayor Carty Finkbeiner, Pi Kappa Phi Regional Governor & UT Alumni Trustee, Mark Urrutia, as well as other local dignitaries. After their arrival, the team shared a Chipotle lunch in the Student Union with faculty, staff, and city and student leaders.

That evening the riders were treated to a multi-course dinner at Outback steakhouse and were hosted by the University of Toledo for the night at the Crossings residence hall. Breakfast was provided and prepared for the team at 6:30 a.m. by students, alumni and friends of Pi Kappa Phi at their fraternity house in UT’s McComas Village.

Dear Pi Kapp Alumni, Paul Webb and I, Nick Jones, are writing to you today because we wanted to notify you that next summer (summer 2010) we will be on the journey of a lifetime. For over sixty days of next summer, Paul and I will be biking across America on the Journey of Hope. We have both signed up with the North route as our preferred route because we would like to stop by the University of Toledo to make a difference in the area around our school as well as our hometowns that are both near the route.

As men of Beta Iota, you know how big of an event the Journey of Hope is for Pi Kappa Phi. Many of you have also seen the good work that our philanthropy, PUSH America, has done for so many people through Give-A-Push weekends and other national events. This is why we are asking for your help. The required donation that a cyclist must make for JOH is $5,000. Believing in PUSH America as well as the men of Pi Kappa Phi, Paul and I have both raised our goals well above the requirement (Paul's to $7,000 and mine to $6,500). As any former cyclist of JOH can tell you, this money that we have raised is not money that will be put toward the cost of the trip but money that we will personally be able to hand out in the form of grants to facilities that cater to people with disabilities.

If you would like to help us out, with even a small donation, it would be greatly appreciated. All donations of $25 or more are tax deductible.
