Alpha Upsilon receives charter, celebrates 75 years

On the night of November 22, 2008, the Alpha Upsilon Chapter of Pi Kappa Phi was officially reinstated by the national fraternity. A group of 40 undergraduates and four alumni (see page 6) were initiated as Founding Fathers of the new Alpha Upsilon Chapter. In addition, the banquet celebrated the 75th Anniversary of the chapter here at Drexel University. The ceremony was held in the Great Court, in the Main Building at Drexel. Illuminated with soft lights, and decorated with a huge Pi Kappa Phi flag, the setting was appropriate for such an important night. The building was transformed into a banquet hall, and the event was attended by more than 300 undergraduates, alumni, parents, and friends as well as university and national fraternity representatives. Brother Mike Imms was responsible for directing the night that included speeches from several members of the Drexel community.
Mark Timmes, CEO of Pi Kappa Phi, was a distinguished guest and spoke about the strength that Alpha Upsilon chapter possesses. The evening of addresses was culminated with comments from Alumni Board President Tony Noce and his son Michael Noce, the chapter’s Archon. There was a feeling of excitement and relief in the air throughout the night, for it was the result of years of work by the alumni, and over a year of dedication from the current brothers. Both parties felt a weight lifted from their shoulders as the original charter from May 20th, 1933 was raised in celebration of the achievement. It is an exciting time for the new chapter, and they have high expectations for the future. With the help of alumni and the University, the chapter will regain the prosperity that it enjoyed back in the good ol’ days!

First and foremost I would like to thank all of those who donated or provided services for the chapter in the past year. ALPHA UPSILON OFFICERS Without your help we could never be where we are now. I ARCHON would also like to thank everyone who attended the ReMICHAEL NOCE Chartering and 75th Anniversary. It was a wonderful event VICE ARCHON and I can speak for the chapter when I say I hope you all THOMAS BOSC enjoyed it as much as we did. TREASURER It is safe to say that the easy part of re-starting a chapter is MICHAEL GIAMPAPA over. We have established a strong base for the future of Pi SECRETARY Kappa Phi at Drexel University. Now is our time to perform and prove that we can function as our brothers have in the past. MICHAEL COSTER Over the next year we will be holding many Rush events, Push WARDERN ADAM KOZAKOV America fundraisers, and community service events to get our name noticed. The main focus of the upcoming term will be HISTORIAN TAYLOR MYER on Rush, sports, and preparing for the upcoming Greek Week. Vice Archon Tom Bosc is preparing a winter Rush that CHAPLAIN should substantially increase our man power, which currently MATTHEW NOVATNACK is at 40. Our ultimate goal is to recruit as many men as PUSH AMERICA CHAIR possible while understanding that quality is much more NOAH CONDON important than quantity. This has been our approach toward recruitment all along. While having a large chapter looks great in a composite, it means nothing unless you prove to others on campus that you can work together effectively. This is why we are going to be putting a lot of time and energy into sports and Greek Week. There is no doubt that we are tough contenders in any competition, and we are hoping to take home some championships and bring back Pi Kapp’s winning attitude. Alumni will be working a great deal with the chapter to aide us in making the best decisions possible. The undergrads look forward to this interaction and appreciate all the help you offer us. Having stood in the corner of the chapter room most Sunday evenings for the past year now, I have watched this chapter arise from the ashes to be recognized as a fully chartered chapter of Pi Kappa Phi. Successful recruitment and Push America events, studying the White Diamond and Alpha Upsilon’s long and rich tradition, and yet recognizing how quickly it can be taken away when vigilance is not attended: these are things I will always remember. The dedication of the entire chapter over these past months made last November an unforgettable moment in my life. When I was honored to speak at the Rechartering/75th Anniversary banquet, I watched with pride as men of honor such as Mark Timmes, Jack Caspar, Keith Sheppard, and Tony Noce spoke of the rich history of the chapter, and of the hopes and dreams as the chapter begins anew. I feel fortunate to be part of a group of young men whose desire allowed their dream of being rechartered come to reality. It’s not often that one gets to celebrate a “diamond” anniversary—traditionally a 60th or 75th anniversary. It is no accident that this rare gem takes so long to develop: perhaps it is fitting that there was doubt and worry that Alpha Upsilon might not recharter; it is only through time that a diamond is forged into the most beautiful and awe-inspiring of precious gems. And yet I have seen so-called “diamonds in the rough”: those brothers/founding fathers who will lead Alpha Upsilon to new heights, not only within Pi Kappa Phi nationally, but right here on Drexel’s campus. I watched with incredible pride 40 young men dedicate themselves to the true meaning

PRESIDENT’S REPORT: MISSION ACCOMPLISHED Brothers, I am happy to be able to say that for the first time since December of 2003, the Alpha Upsilon Chapter is an active chapter of Pi Kappa Phi. As over 300 people witnessed during the chartering weekend events in November, not only has our chapter been restored, but it is embodied by a great group of men whom we can all proudly call brothers. Over the past two years, I witnessed this group of young men grow into a fraternity in the truest sense of the word. The road to chartering is long and winding and requires a commitment from the men of the chapter that goes well beyond the pledging process that we all experienced. Over a period of 18 months, these men established a constitution and by-laws; learned the history of the fraternity; endured countless hours of meetings, rituals and member education activities; and managed to maintain a chapter grade point average in excess of 3.0—all while forming the bonds of brotherhood among themselves. The goals set forth by the Alumni Corporation in 2006 have all been achieved in 2008. The undergraduate chapter has been reestablished, the chapter house has been renovated thanks to a very successful capital campaign, and participation at alumni events has been steadily increasing.

Looking forward to 2009 and beyond, it is our desire to encourage more alumni from the late 80s and 90s to take a more active role in the Alumni Corp. to insure the longevity of our chapter into the future. This year, we are planning three alumni events where we hope to see an increased level of participation from our younger alumni. One event has already taken place: the Greeks Pack the DAC basketball game on January 24, which follows our Winter Alumni meeting. This event is one of many events on campus during Drexel’s newly resurrected Homecoming weekend. The next alumni event will be the Towanda Open Golf Outing on May 1 at Turtle Creek Golf Club in Limerick, Pa. Finally, this year the undergraduate chapter will be hosting a Parents-Alumni Day in the fall. For details and updates on these events please visit www.pikappau.org. alpha upsilon receives housing corporation of the year The Alumni Corporation of the Alpha Upsilon Chapter of Pi Kappa Phi Fraternity was awarded the Housing Corporation of Year award for 2008 at the 51st Supreme Chapter held in Denver, Colo. Mr. Anthony Noce, president of the Alumni Corp., and Mr. Michael Noce, archon, were in attendance to receive the award from the national fraternity. Working collaboratively with Drexel University, the Alumni Corporation raised more than $315,000 from alumni and received nearly $225,000 in in‑kind donations. To organize this effort, certain board members
worked on the renovation team while others, namely a steering committee of four, recruited 40 class captains who were in charge of raising money among their chapter peer group. The campaign and renovations are ongoing, but the effort has already been a success. The student chapter was recently re-chartered and members are as committed to this project as their alumni. The number of members living in the house has already grown from seven to 21 people currently living in the house, with more incoming next term.

A special Alumni Appreciation Award was presented to Steve Markley for his unprecedented support and dedication to the chapter for more than 30 years. He has acted as chapter advisor, and most recently was an integral part of getting the rechartering underway and completed. Beyond that, he is a great man and a great brother. Receiving additional awards from the undergraduate members were Halsey White and Tony Noce. Brother White was recognized for his dedication to the chapter house, attending many work weekends and often bearing new crafts for the house. Brother Noce was honored as the Alumni of the Year for his dedication to Alpha Upsilon’s undergraduate chapter and alumni corporation.
In Alpha Upsilon’s prestigious history, there have been many men who have exemplified the true meaning of being a brother of Pi Kappa Phi. Through their leadership and commitment, they have gone on to do great things. Two men from Alpha Upsilon have been recognized with the Mr. Pi Kappa Phi award, the highest honor to be bestowed upon a member of the fraternity. One of those recipients has his own leadership society within the fraternity, and the other is a two-star General. To honor these men and more men to come, the Alpha Upsilon Hall of Fame was established. Six men were inducted into the Hall of Fame’s inaugural class in November.

of Pi Kappa Phi, and now is the time to show Drexel University what it means to be Men of Class, to be Leaders by Choice, and what an ideal chapter looks, sounds, and feels like. With the first-elected Executive Board of the newly chartered chapter in place, and these officers attending their first Mid Year Leadership Conference, I am so very proud to be your chapter advisor. As the winter and spring terms are upon us, I am excited to see what men will make that first commitment to Pi Kappa Phi, who will realize their leadership potential, who will be men for others through their work for Push America, and who will be proud to wear the letters we all hold so close to our hearts. Now the heavy lifting begins. We cannot afford to be complacent, or rest on our laurels. We must continually work (and yes, have fun along the way!) for our future, so that in 25 years, we can celebrate a century of success. God bless Alpha Upsilon, and God bless Pi Kappa Phi!

Jack Casper (AU 605) came to Drexel in 1963 after receiving a scholarship to play baseball, and the attraction of the co-op program. He decided to major in accounting because he felt that—no matter what—he would have to understand accounting to succeed professionally. Almost immediately, he was drawn by the leadership shown by the men of Pi Kappa Phi on campus and decided to rush.

alumni initiates Harold J. Coster Jr. Harry is the father of the chapter’s founding Historian Michael Coster. He expressed much gratitude for the opportunity to join Pi Kappa Phi as an alumni brother. As the first of seven children, and one of many first cousins, he understands the importance of family and the tight bond that brings brothers together. He looks forward to becoming an active alumni member. He works in the insurance software development field and has held jobs at MetLife, Kemper, and The Mercer Insurance Group, among others. Harry grew up in the New York City area and has been a lifelong Yankees and Giants fan. Currently, he lives Flemington, NJ with his wife and an incredibly happy dog. In addition to his son Michael, he also has a daughter who is in her first year of college.
“At the University and in the fraternity I learned leadership skills that have served me all my life. My goal is to help pass that along.” Once he became a brother, Jack held the position of treasurer, becoming the archon shortly thereafter. Outside the fraternity, Jack was heavily involved on campus in sports and clubs—he was even on the varsity baseball team. He was on the Drexel Business Team, played IFC football and bowled. Jack graduated in 1968 and went on to earn his M.B.A. at Oklahoma State University. While working toward is master’s, he helped start the Gamma Upsilon chapter of Pi Kappa Phi at Oklahoma State. He finished his degree in 1970, the same year he married his wife, Suzy. Jack and Suzy have two kids, Dana and John. Dana is now a pharmacist and John works at JPMorgan Chase & Co. In addition to his two children, he also has a granddaughter. From 1970 until 1976, Jack worked at Deere & Company. He began as an internal auditor but was soon promoted to finance director and then assistant controller. Working with Deere & Company, Jack and his family were able to travel the world, including stints in Australia and Thailand. In 1976, Jack left

Deere & Company to become vice president of Garney Companies, a privately held construction, farming and ranching company. He worked there for five years before accepting a job with Gang-Nail Systems, Inc., which is a world leader in metal connector plates and roof and wall engineering software. He was the vice president and chief financial officer for four years before being promoted to the senior vice president. His next position was for Petrolite Corporation as the VP and CFO. He left three years later to become president and CEO for Casper Capital Management, his management and consulting firm. Jack currently has his own business, Jack Casper & Associates, which does consulting work for several private equity firms. Despite having to travel around the world
for work, Jack always stayed close with his brothers in Pi Kappa Phi. In 2002 he and his wife established the John M. Casper Endowed Scholarship Fund for students at the LeBow College of Business, with preference for brothers of Pi Kappa Phi. Jack also teamed up with a fellow Pi Kappa Phi from another chapter to set up an international scholars program—a program to help undergraduate members of Pi Kappa Phi to study abroad. The first of four of these scholarships was given to a brother at the University of Penn last year. Brother Casper exemplifies the meaning of being a lifelong brother. This was acknowledged as he was inducted into the Alpha Upsilon Hall of Fame. Alpha Upsilon’s undergraduate and alumni chapters at Drexel University would like to thank Jack for this unerring support over the past 40 years.
Mike Olsen Olsen recently became the Northeast research and development Software Engineering Manager for Lockheed Martin, Information Systems & Global Services, Defense Systems. He is based out of Valley Forge, Pa.
Stan Schuck Schuck just finished his first year as president of the Main Line Chamber of Commerce, a 1,400-member chamber that covers parts of Delaware, Chester and Montgomery counties of suburban Philadelphia. In August 2007, Schuck retired from Verizon after 27 years.
alumni updates Jack Campbell Cambell is retired and getting ready for his 47th anniversary with Gloria. One of Campbell’s two sons, Brant A Campbell, was a member of Alpha Upsilon chapter while at Drexel and now lives in Florida.

John Richard McCrohan III John is a skilled electrician in the I.B.E.W. Local 654 and has worked in this field for many years. John is a father to two sons, one daughter, and is happily married to his wife Susan McCrohan. John was born and raised in Pennsylvania where he currently resides in Glen Mills. Ever a strong and hardworking role model for his children, he has not only spent a large amount of time working to support his son’s college careers but has even joined a brotherhood in which his youngest has become a member. John leads by choice, so now it is our honor and pleasure to recognize him as a part of the Alpha Upsilon chapter and the brotherhood of Pi Kappa Phi. Rod Monkman Rod came into this fraternity through his son Ryan Monkman. His dedication to helping Ryan succeed in the chapter and school got the attention of the members of the chapter. The most notable support came when Ryan participated in Push America’s Journey of Hope. He helped with fundraising and kept Ryan motivated throughout the three month trip across America. Rod represents the ideals of Pi Kappa Phi through his consistent support of all of the members of the Alpha Upsilon chapter and for that he was brought into the brotherhood. Richard Francis Condon Richard is a father of four and currently resides in Hopkinton, Ma. Though he lives in Massachusetts his professional career has taken him all over the world. In recent years he has worked everywhere from New Hampshire and Rhode Island to Florida and even as far as Texas. Each new territory come new experiences, which have included video conferencing, telecommunications, artificial intelligence, and e-learning. He currently works as the CEO and Chairman of the Board for Fortress Technologies, but still manages to dedicate his life to his children. Many may consider him a man of few words, but there is great wisdom behind his expressions. To sum it up, Richard Condon is a great businessman, father, friend, and mentor.
AU undergrads establish business committee The Alpha Upsilon undergraduate chapter is creating a Business Committee in order to help student members with their professional goals. We are asking alumni to help us by: - Providing the chapter industry tips in your field - Informing the chapter of current/future job openings, Opportunities, and internships - Presenting to the chapter about professional advise, lessons, etc. - Providing any other help and/or advice The mission of the Business Committee is “To give brothers the skills and opportunities to find the best suitable job.” The committee has identified five objectives: (1)To train brothers in ways which will enhance their professional careers; (2)To identify current hiring trends; (3) To recruit better caliber men to Pi Kappa Phi; (4) To promote the name of Pi Kappa Phi in the business world; and (5) To provide an easier way for Pi Kappa Phi alumni to help undergraduate brothers. the co-op experience The reason most Drexel students will give pertaining to why they chose to come to this university will almost always be the Co-op program. As you all have experienced, Co-op gives undergraduate’s unbelievable experience and opportunities in the business world. The reason this program is successful is because of each student’s impact on the company they work for. While the student gains experience in the area of their study, a company gets a valuable young asset with a great work ethic. In most cases jobs are found through the Co-op program’s job pool, which is a very successful program. While this is consistent and usually very easy, there is nothing personal in it. The undergraduates are working on getting a job database of their own, consisting of our fraternity’s remarkable alumni. The goal of this is to give our brothers the chance to gain working experience by working alongside an alumnus. One undergraduate has already gotten that chance, and it has turned out to be a very successful opportunity. Steve Markley, Director of Estimating at Hunter Roberts Construction Group, hired Ryan Monkman this fall to intern as an estimator. Ryan will be the first to say that it has been a great experience. The chapter hopes his opportunity will be the first of many successful Co-op appointments.
