Throught the line City Custom area Chiasso/Ponte Chiasso

Diploma 2020 - Atelier Petzet // The aim of my project is to create an urban, social and economical continuity in two areas which are already interdependent but not cooperating, dealing with the actual problematics that affect the entire two cities of Chiasso and Ponte Chiasso, and where the border line is not just theoretical but appears as a physical fence. The strategy is to create a common trans-frontalier urban center: re-vitalizing the existing underused historic buildings, as cities’ identity, working on urban decay and re-thinking the area not only as a mere control space through a new building. One of the main features of my project is the big and needed public space for social exchange, which crosses the border creating one square in Italy and one in Switzerland, both facing the main street where the Swiss custom pavilion would be demolished. Playing with different pavings, I underline the hierarchy between main spaces and secondary urban passages but also the continuity of this new district over the border. In the background, behind the new green spaces, I propose a new building laying on both states. It is connected to the background and the main street thanks to the car ramps and a small pavilion, as entrances to the underground interchange parking. The facade is continuous, a recurring visual element on both sides of the border, and made of glass, to bring an idea of lightness in a heavy rendered context as a confrontation but also not to be a dividing element. The program comprehends a common administration and a business incubator working with financial technology, seeking political cooperation and providing an economic engine related to the strong financial institutes presence and to Chiasso’s declared interest in innovation. The ground floor is mostly free to connect all the public spaces around and with an ironic paving. Upper floors of the building are organized as free workspaces where enclosed ones are reduced to minimum necessities, but thanks to a light and flexible secondary structure it could be constantly changing. Only exceptions are the reception and the workers facilities, whose shape comes from the present custom, which has become emblematic of the act of crossing the border, but now as a connecting point.

Caserma Pepe reuse L i d o V e n i c e

Mas 2 - Atelier Boesch // Caserma Pepe is an abandoned military house in an isolated area of Lido island in Venice, and it’s strictly connected to the monastery complex of San Nicolò (now hosting a small university). The aim of the project is to densify the area, creating apartments for students and residents together with public functions. The method for densification was the one-floor addition, as it happend in Venice’s tradition. This way the new caserma hosts public services at the ground floor and a student housing at the upper ones, in which 3 different typologies of apartments were implemented according to the pre-existent structure. All of the typologies follow some basic rules in order to receive as much light as possible and to get back to venetian palaces tradition: the apartmets’ common space, which receives light from both the court and the external facade. It hosts kitchen, living room, dining room and inside distribution, having services and private rooms on both sides. Demolitions inside were limited to a few small dividing walls, to have a less invasive intervention. The most intensive demolition are the ones which aim to open all the arches facing the court, to transform the old, hot and dark distribution corridor into a cold, enlighted, distribution gallery as new liveable common space. The added floor’s contruction uses the same language and materials of the existing ones in order to keep a continuity of proportions with the existing one, but using contemporary techniques.

Archeological museum M e z z o v i c o , T i c i n o

Mas 1 - Atelier Arnaboldi // The key point of this project are its implementation and context. It’s situated in the middle of a valley full of medieval and roman castles which are in an abandoned condition, but the closer context is an industrial and well connected area. The intention is therefore to create, at the centre of the path that extends over the whole valley, a cultural pole closely linked to the study of archaeological finds. In addition to providing adequate support for historical studies at cantonal level, this centre aims to become a new public space in the city providing services not only for study but also for teaching and exhibitions. Then, the proximity of the Mezzovico train station helps to make it a building in dialogue with the whole valley and the region. The concept of the castle and its paradox are the guidelines of the project. It’s almost completely closed, with a heavy structure, to the surrounding industrial area while inside the structure is light and the atmosphere changes. At the same time it pretends to be part and center of a trail running all around the valley through its archeological finds.

Mixed use building Selnaustrasse Z u r i c h

Mas 1 - Atelier Eckert E2A // The project was developed from the concept of the table holding an object, this is reflected in the two typologies of the basement and the tower fusing together in a single volume. Implementing it into the site, the building is shaped according to the main directions the site is suggesting: the Hallenbad pool, the river and the main street that once was a door of the city. As well the tower follows this street and the canal backwards, offering new deep perspectives and reenacting the role of the gate but now between two neighborhoods. Studying the pre-existencies, the site suggested the need in the area of a sport center and apartements. It represents for the city of Zurich a sport pole together with the Hallenbad and the running pathwayalong the river. The building hosts a large area for the main events at the ground floor and other sport activities at the first floors of the tower. Then, an open floor that hosts a bar puts an end to the public part of the building. At last, the upper part of the tower hosts two typologies of apartments. A light structure made of a big frame with few supports, that grows up in a grid structure getting denser where the program changes. So the program and the structure fit together into a mixed use building, creating a fusion between the two typoligies and making them dependent one from the other.

Research center for traditional music S i b y , M a l i

Bac 3 - Atelier Keré // The aim of the project is to create a space where traditional music is studied, recorded and handed down. All the activities are concentrated under a big bamboo and straw roof, which outlines a very open and shaded space. The first building has 2 centers surrounded by facilities for the population and the school. The second one is made for the accomodation of guests and professors. The roof gives not only shade, but also ventilation and water collection systems since it’s studied the natural conditions of the site. Its shape comes from the rythm, the music and the movements of traditional music and dance. Underneath, the small volumes (containing kitchen, toilets, classrooms...) are totally indipendent from the roof and create a sequence alternated with free spaces. The bearing structure is entirely made of bamboo. The pillars are made of 4 bamboo sticks, metal spacers and supports and threaded bars. The bamboo beams, linked together, create a polygonal structure, which bears the secondary structure and the straw coverage. To semplify and regularize the construction there are 4 standard beam-tobeam joins. The underneath volumes are made of bricks and their roof is made as well of bamboo: sticks tied together in big “prefabricated” panels.

Light theaters S a c r o M o n t e , V a r e s e

Bac 3 - Atelier Blumer // “Light Theaters” exhibition at Villa Panza, Varese, from February to March 2018. Ten machines investigating the relation between light and the chapels of Sacro Monte of Varese. An exercise about the dialogue between light and architecture played on the contrast between light and shadow and the virtuosity of light reflections typical of the seventeenth-century Baroque. Light becomes matter and chapels an opportunity to reflect once again on its dynamics and materialization. The mind has a difficult relationship with the shadow. The brain continually uses shadows to learn how objects are made and where they are located in the environment. The architecture of the chapels of the Sacro Monte is well-suited to the play of shadows, as they guide us silently through the reading of their designs. In this proposal is presented a study on the shadows of the first chapel of an entire day. It’s a demonstration, also through their movement, of how accurate is the perception of the space and the details of the building when the materiality is deleted and only the shadows are under our eyes. https://vimeo.com/257474745#embed

https://tulsi-italy.com/ Tulsi is an italian company, based in Rimini (Italy) that produces handmade accessories. Their work is based on traditional and artisanal techniques and on the use of few materials such as high quality leather, metal and wood. Our collaboration started in 2017 with the design of an exhibition stand, modular and easily transportable. During the last years I developed for them different closures, product exhibitors and collections of accessories (such as Luce, Noi, Aqua..). We’re now developing a furnishing department of the company, with some ongoing projects.

2. Cesena Sport City

Il tratto ricorrente nella proposta progettuale delle aree sportive è un elemento lineare definito “Loop”. Il Loop racchiude, definisce e collega ogni area di progetto; una semplice pavimentazione definita da materiali riciclati, utilizzabile come connessione tra le varie attività ma anche come percorso di allenamento o circuito. Nel caso della piscina il Loop assume una colorazione assimilabile all’ambiente natatorio, creato utilizzando materiali riciclati legati al mondo acquatico. La forma ellittica definisce uno spazio asimmetrico, collegando le varie funzioni in modo lineare: dal parcheggio a nord, alla piscina a sud, passando per le vasche interne.

L’area di Villa Chiaviche, con la sua forte densità di attività sportive, trova nel Loop un ulteriore elemento sportivo ma anche una direttrice che mette in collegamento le parti periferiche del lotto con l’edificio polifunzionale posto al centro. L’area di Fiorenzuola propone una funzione mista del Loop, esternamente un semplice circuito pedonale o ciclabile, internamente un parco linear di parkour con strutture puntuali e setti murari per le acrobazie, alternati da strutture per il calisthenics. L’area di Case Gentili propone il Loop forse più lungo, pensato per essere sviluppato nel tempo e dedicato alla categoria di sport estremi come mountain bike, BMX e motocross.
