You can register with Visa, Mastercard, Discover or eCheck with your username and password.

Walk-in: Monday–Friday, 8:30 am–5:00 pm at the Recreation Department, 358 Hillside Ave. By phone: Monday–Friday, 8:30 am–5:00 pm at 510 420-3070.

When to register Online registration for Piedmont residents begins on August 6 at 6:00 pm.

Online registration for non-Piedmont residents begins on August 13 at 6:00 pm. Registration is required for all programs and activities. You are not considered registered until you have paid all fees and have received a confirmation.

Up-to-the-Minute Activities Activities are sometimes added after this publication goes to print. Please visit our registration website, CommunityPass, for the most up-to-date activities.

Photo Policy PRD occasionally takes photos of department programs that may include enrolled participants. Photos taken during programs, events or activities may be used in future department promotional materials. If you do not want your child’s photo used, please contact the Recreation Department.

PRD welcomes all cis, trans, non-binary, gender non-conforming, gender queer and any male or female-identified participants. Certain programs are listed as being either for girls or boys—PRD recognizes that these terms do not fit every individual.

Facility Preservation Fee (FPF) f For each sports program sign-up with a fee of $50 or higher, a surcharge will be added to the program fee, to be deposited into a dedicated fund for preservation and replacement of athletic facilities or maintenance.

Observance of Religious Holidays PRD understands and respects the diverse religious beliefs of our participants and their families. We recognize there may be occasions when individuals are unable to attend a PRD program or class due to the observance of a religious holiday. To request a credit due to a non-attendance, please email prd@piedmont. ca.gov. Request must be made in writing at least five (5) business days in advance of the first program meeting. Requests received after this deadline may not be considered.

Withdrawals All withdrawal requests must be submitted to PRD via email (prdrefunds@piedmont.ca.gov) or phone (510) 420-3070 during office hours, Monday–Friday, 8:30 am–5:00 pm (excluding City holidays).

A request made: ■ 10 Business Days or More prior to the start of the program will receive a full refund or credit to account.

■ Within 5–10 Business Days prior to the start of the program may receive a refund to the original form of payments, minus the convenience fee (3% for credit cards, 1% for echecks) or credit to account. For an account credit, the amount credited will also be less the convenience fee. However it will not be charged again when the credit is used for a future registration of equal or lesser value.

■ Less than 5 Business Days prior to the start of the program may be considered on a case by case basis and only permissible if the original program is over the minimum enrollment required. Request must be approved by the instructor and PRD Staff. If approved a refund or credit to account minus a 10% Class Withdrawal Fee.

■ Late Withdrawal Requests after the start of a program will not be issued unless there is an exceptional situation and it is approved by the instructor and PRD staff. A 10% Class Withdrawal Fee will be charged, the prorated amount for any classes attended, and any additional fees (if applicable: non-resident fee, Facility Preservation Fee). Instructors will need to approve the return of any material fees.

Credit to account only, no refunds.

Schoolmates and Preschool Programs have separate refund policies.

Cancellations may occur if a class minimum is not reached. We reserve the right to either postpone the beginning of the program, or cancel the program and issue refunds to the original form of payment.

Missed Classes will not receive a refund or credit.

Class Transfers requests 10 business days or more prior to the start of the class are reviewed by PRD Staff and are only permissible if the original program is over the minimum enrollment. Transfer must be to a program of equal or greater cost. Transfer requests after PRD withdrawal window are not allowed unless approved by PRD staff.

Inclement Weather or Poor Air Quality may cause recreation activities to be canceled.

If rescheduling is not an option, a credit will be issued at the end of the program session.

Comm The Schoolmates program is crafted to create an engaging, stimulating and nurturing setting for school-aged children, grades TK–5, throughout the academic school year. Our dedicated team of childcare professionals prioritizes children’s safety while guiding them through a diverse range of enriching activities.

The Minimates program is tailored to provide dedicated support for PUSD transitional kindergarten (TK) students as they adjust to their first year on the BIG campus.

Our program offers a dynamic and engaging play-based learning environment where children can explore, discover, and grow at their own pace. From sensory play, art exploration, outdoor adventures, and dramatic play, each day is filled with themed activities to stimulate imagination and foster social development. Register by the day–rates based on $11.20/hour.

Camp Kaleidoscope offers the best of both worlds—weekly flexibility and a rotation of fun enrichment activities. Hanabi-Fireworks! Hajime (Beginning Judo) ages 5–17 Hajime! (Begin!) establishes a strong base of judo technique, culture, and character. Fun tumbling, jumping and running warm us up before we practice falling techniques: Hajime students learn to fall safely, effortlessly and without discomfort. Judo allows a smaller person to control a bigger opponent. We learn to hold a person down with “kesa-gatame” (scarf hold) and we practice throws—where our opponent can be flipped upside down on Sensei. Peter Ajemian has taught martial arts to thousands of children, teens and adults for more than 20 years. He founded Soja Mind Body martial arts studio in Oakland in 2007.

It is Peter’s ongoing privilege and pleasure to witness his students of all ages transcend their self-limiting beliefs and expand their awareness and sense of possibility through physical movement and mindfulness practices.

Peter has trained in more than seven different martial arts lineages over the past 40 years.

He enjoys all forms of healthy movement and has an easy-going style of teaching that his teen groups and his private adult clients enjoy and thrive in. Peter is a certified counselor of Internal Family Systems psychotherapy, works with adults for 1:1 sessions, and runs monthly men’s support gatherings in Oakland.

Sidekicks: Adaptive Programming Because every superhero needs a sidekick!

The Piedmont Recreation Department (PRD) is committed to meet the needs of the community by creating safe, fun and affordable inclusive programs for school-aged kids with neurodiverse needs. School year classes are thoughtfully designed to address various special needs including but not limited to the facilities chosen and inclusive curricula. Adaptive programs are modified to address the needs of neurodiverse students with a focus on providing enriching experiences.

School Year Classes PRD is offering more recreational opportunities for children with neurodiverse needs! Checkout the variety of afterschool programs, from social groups to art to sports and more. Classes are designed to get kids moving, socializing and having fun with their peers! Our experienced instructors are each assisted by several Teen Sidekicks (ages 15+).

Each participant will be asked to fill out an intake form before starting the program so the Sidekicks staff is able to support them. For more information, please contact Sidekicks@piedmont.ca.gov.

Volunteer Opportunity for Teens this School Year Teen Sidekicks are truly committed and enjoy working closely with special needs students, befriending them, supporting them in activities and helping them successfully integrate into mainstream programs.

If you are interested in creating lasting memories and playing an integral role in supporting the growth and overall experience for a child with neurodiverse needs, contact Sidekicks. This unique experience is unlike any other and incredibly rewarding. Teen Sidekicks attend a training and are fully supported by PRD staff. Must be at least 14 years of age. We will wrap up with a fun yoga session and your child will come home feeling a sense of calm and relaxation and a better understanding of how to regulate their senses.

This is a neurodiverse friendly setting, siblings and friends are welcome to sign up as well. Join us for Shake it Up with Amy, a vibrant adaptive dance cardio experience where the focus is on pure enjoyment and self-expression. In this inclusive class, there are no wrong moves, only invitations to embrace the joy of movement. Led by former ABA Therapist, Shake It Up will celebrate the diversity of dance styles and encourage participants to express themselves freely through music. Our mantra? Foundational tools are provided to improve a student’s ability to engage in research, critical thinking and public speaking that will not only prepare them for future academic endeavors, but success in higher education and in their careers. Students are introduced to the Lincoln Douglas style of debate to prepare them for high school level research. The course consists of lectures, drills and activities, group research, collaborative work and practice “mock” debates. By the end of the class, students are expected to be able to thoroughly research a variety of topics, prepare arguments in favor and in opposition of the topic, write working documents and organize materials, engage in oratorical advocacy and impromptu refutations . After completion of the 6th Grade Debate, students are able to participate in the competitive 7th and 8th Grade PMS Debate team their following year. Join the award-winning PMS Debate Team where students learn debate fundamentals and techniques including research competence, evidence evaluation, public speaking, media literacy, conflict resolution, critical thinking and critical listening. Beginner to advanced debaters are welcome. The classwork will consist of lectures, drills and activities, group research, collaborative work and practice “”mock”” debates.

The course is designed to teach the Lincoln Douglas debate format, starting from introducing the format to teaching more advanced techniques, while also focusing on individual debaters and their needs via group work or hands-on coaching. The Lincoln Douglas debate format will have students individually advocating for their position while retaining team collaboration for research.

The classes will meet after-school with one class generally focused on debate fundamentals and skills and the second class devoted to research and debating tournament topics. Tournament fees are not included. Parents will be contacted about payments and deadlines for students to attend tournaments.

Moreover, parents will be asked to volunteer to judge at tournaments (one parent judge required for every pair of students). For example, if four students participate in a tournament, there must be two parent volunteers.

Sports Piedmont Rec PRD 2024-2025 Recreational Basketball League The Piedmont Recreation Department’s Recreational Basketball League offers a safe and exciting environment where players will learn the value of good sportsmanship, teamwork, and competitive play. This coed program offers a unique opportunity to develop essential running skills that can boost performance in any sport. The season’s highlight is an exciting end-of-season competition, where students from all three schools come together to see who claims the title of the fastest squad!

Every practice is packed with fun and variety. From icebreakers or team-building activities, followed by relay races and dynamic circuits featuring speed ladders and hurdles, to occasional endurance runs of up to 1.5 miles.

Welcome to the 2024-2025 Piedmont Middle School Athletics Program!

We warmly welcome new students and families as well as returning students and families. As we begin this new academic journey, we are filled with excitement and anticipation for the amazing experiences and opportunities that lie ahead. We are committed to creating a supportive, engaging, and enriching environment for all our students and we can’t wait to see the incredible things the athletes will accomplish this year.

One of the highlights of our school experience is the wide range of sports teams that students can join throughout the year. Science becomes fun as the kids create models and see the practical application of mechanics and physics. Children get to build models and tinker with them to understand the science behind it. Katy Bradford Vosburg grew up dancing at a studio in the SF Bay Area where she studied jazz, ballet and tap and competed for many years. In her early 20’s, Katy and her husband moved to Lusaka, Zambia where she became immersed in the dance culture and began teaching Zumba. Within a year, a new type of dance fitness was formed by local friends and dance aficionado’s–Zambia’s Own Caribbean African dance- ZOCA which Katy began teaching in the capital city, Lusaka. Beyond Lusaka, Katy has taught dance fitness in San Mateo and recently in Hamilton, Montana.

She is certified as a dance fitness instructor.

Katy earned her Master’s degree in Public Health at UC Berkeley, is a Type One Diabetic, and a proud mother of three kids who attend Piedmont schools. She cannot wait to dance with you in the Monday Mamas class!

Meditation provides a sense of calm, peace and balance that benefits both emotional well-being and overall health. If stress has you anxious, tense, and worried, consider trying meditation. Spending a few minutes meditating restores calm and inner peace. Anyone can meditate. It’s simple and inexpensive and doesn’t require any special equipment.

Meditation is to your mind what exercise is to your body, building four mental “muscles:” concentration, clarity, friendliness and equanimity. This course introduces five kinds of meditation in a safe and supportive environment, so each participant can become comfortable meditating at home.

This class is designed for both beginner with no experience meditating as well as experienced meditators who want to refresh on the basics of breath, posture, calming and insight techniques. Must register in advance.

Get ready to dance in this total body conditioning dance fitness class designed for moms (*all genders welcome though!). This weekly classes promises a great work out, a supportive and safe space, and a ton of fun to destress and re-energize for your week! Juniors Helping Seniors PRD is looking for teen volunteers (16+) to teach technology to seniors one Wednesday each month. Spend a half an hour working hands-on with the Piedmont Seniors answering questions about their phones, apps, tablets or computers. This rewarding experience aligns with PHS lunch break and is conveniently situated within walking distance of PHS.

Volunteer Opportunity for Teens: Sidekicks Teen Sidekicks are truly committed and enjoy working closely with special needs students, befriending them, supporting them in and activities and helping them successfully integrate into mainstream programs.

If you are interested in creating lasting memories and playing an integral role in supporting the growth and overall experience for a child with neurodiverse needs, contact Sidekicks. This unique experience is unlike any other and incredibly rewarding. Teen Sidekicks attend a training and are fully supported by PRD staff. Must be at least 14 years of age. Flexible scheduling available. Community service hours are available upon request. Teen Sidekicks are eligible to receive a letter of recommendation. No experience necessary.
