Dear friends, In 1975, a small group of dedicated community members came together to form the Piedmont Education Foundation, determined to advance education in our public schools. Within a year, they had raised $5,000 to fund the first prize at the Piedmont Music Festival and award a grant to the Piedmont High School Model UN Club.

This golden opportunity was the beginning of an extraordinary community partnership that has since provided tens of millions of dollars to Piedmont schools.

This year, PEF proudly celebrates its 50th anniversary, an occasion to reflect not only on the past twelve months, but also on five decades of generosity, vision, and shared commitment. In these pages, you’ll see snapshots of the past year’s successes alongside historic images (some featuring familiar faces) reminding us of the people and moments that have shaped this remarkable journey.

Last September, we hosted the most successful Harvest Festival carnival in its 26-year history. Together with funds raised from Spring Fling (a tradition dating back to the mid-1990s), these events will help maintain essential counseling services and expand visual and performing arts programs at Beach, Havens, and Wildwood. That same month, we launched our largest annual fundraiser, the Giving Campaign, which brought in an extraordinary $3.6 million. On page 5, you will see the direct impact the Giving Campaign has on every school in the district.

As we look ahead, we do so with deep gratitude for the generations of Piedmonters who have given their time, talent, and treasure to ensure our schools remain exceptional. Thank you for being part of this enduring partnership.

From 1993: Eighth graders Mike Herskowitz and Mandy Gruber research animals on the new CD-ROM station purchased by PEF. “With discs, libraries can store a great deal of information in a limited space.”

Founded in 1975, PEF was created to ensure educational excellence for all students in the Piedmont Unified School District. What began with modest grants for enrichment, such as a Teletype receiver and new landscaping for the Middle School, quickly evolved into a vital community institution in response to dramatic changes in school funding.

When the passage of Proposition 13 in the late 1970s led to severe statewide education budget cuts, PEF mobilized the Piedmont community to fill the gap, granting over $1.5 million across three years to directly support the District’s operating budget. Recognizing that private fundraising alone could not sustain long-term stability, PEF and key community members helped advocate for and secure the District’s first school parcel tax in 1985, cementing our community’s strong commitment to public education.

Over the decades, PEF has continually expanded its role. From launching the all-school Directory in 1987 to establishing the Endowment Fund in 1989, PEF has consistently created tools and strategies to serve both schools and families. In times of crisis, such as the 1991 budget shortfall, PEF stepped in to prevent cuts to core programs and staff. It has also led efforts to modernize our schools—supporting bonds, capital campaigns, technology plans, and districtwide innovation.

In 2009, PEF partnered with the Associated Parent Clubs of Piedmont (APCP) to unify their fundraising efforts under a single Giving Campaign, simplifying the donor experience and strengthening impact. PEF and APCP merged in 2015 to streamline operations and increase efficiency. That same year, PEF hired its first full-time Executive Director, formalized its grant-making practices, and reinforced a transparent partnership with the District.

From 2003: PHS Juniors Kate Coysh and Claire Neumann read The Narrative of the Life of Frederick Douglass and Ralph Ellison’s Invisible Man, purchased with funds from PEF. “These books are invaluable for their artistic equality and for insights into the history of race-relations in the United States.”

Today, PEF remains a professionally run nonprofit with deep community roots. Led by a Board of Directors composed of parents and civic leaders, PEF continues to increase revenue, steward community trust, and deliver meaningful impact to Piedmont’s public schools.

From teacher salaries and student programs to innovation and enrichment, PEF helps fund the people and programs that make a difference in our schools.

ASSETS & OPERATING EXPENSES

The figures above represents PEF’s unaudited operating revenue and expenses through the end of the fiscal year June 30, 2025. These charts show the funds raised and expenses incurred during the 2024-2025 academic year.

The goal of the grant process is to find the intersection between community priorities and the needs of PUSD. The grant distribution was recommended by the PEF Grants Committee, after reviewing the results of a survey to all families. Allocation of funds is based on enrollment at each school. Spring Fling 2025 For over 28 years, Spring Fling has united the Piedmont elementary school community to support our children’s education. This year’s sold-out Palm Royale Gala, chaired by Monika Moscoso Riddle and Heidi Reinfeld, capped off a fantastic season of events, netting $282,453 for Beach, Havens, and Wildwood. Thanks to this incredible generosity, Spring Fling funds will help maintain essential counseling services and continue to enhance our students’ education through rich visual and performing arts programs. Piedmont Spring Swing Each spring, golf and tennis enthusiasts come together at the prestigious Claremont Country Club for a memorable day of friendly competition, community, and support for Piedmont schools.

Community Partners Honoring our Support Groups

Piedmont’s Support Groups play an essential role in our school community by providing program-specific funding, advocacy, and expertise across the district. We deeply appreciate the dedication of these groups and the impact they make on our schools every day. This year, we would like to highlight two for their outstanding contributions.

Piedmont Arts is committed to fostering awareness, appreciation, and support for the arts in our schools. This year, they granted $20,000 to fund music clinicians and instrument maintenance and repair, helping students access a high-quality music education.

The Wellness Center is a vital hub for student mental health care, offering expert support services and a safe space for students to navigate the emotional challenges of adolescence. Thanks to the fundraising efforts of their support committee, the Center received $100,000 to fund graduate-level interns and practicum therapists, support didactic teaching strategies, and provide essential supplies.

By donating to or shopping at DBFL, you’re supporting our schools, as a majority of their profits are donated back to PEF. But, DBFL also helps our greater community with additional donations to organizations such as Soccer without Borders, Love Twice, St Vincent de Paul, ReCare and the Alameda Public Defender’s office.

In addition to their donation center, look for monthly drop-offs at Havens, the DBFL drop-box at Mulberry’s and the end-of-the-month $15 bag sales.

Community Engagement Committee Connections to our schools don’t end when students graduate. PEF’s Community Engagement Committee is dedicated to fostering meaningful opportunities for community members, especially those without current students in the district, to learn, connect, and engage with the vibrant life of our schools.
