New Fascinating Research Studies with Perlite on the Foreground

The start of the new year coincided with the publication of some fascinating, worth mentioning research on various uses for perlite. The studies deal with radically different applications, from the recovery of useful substance from perlite filter aid and its reuse, the potential function of perlite as a radiation shield and the combination of expanded perlite with carbon nanotubes to coat bricks achieving high sound absorption. Each study is of particular interest because it enlightens the behavior of the material under unusual conditions, broadening the know-how of its unlimited capabilities. The target of this article is to present the most important findings from these investigations.

Recovery of Perlite Filter Aid from Carrageenan Residue (Li et al., 2024)

The first study was published in the Journal of Cleaner Production in January 2024 with the title “Characteristics and mechanisms of sustainable recovery of perlite from carrageenan residue by green technology and its application in carrageenan extraction.” Carrageenan is a substance extracted from red seaweed (algae) and is used as a thickening and stabilizing agent in a variety of food products.

It has been used for centuries in traditional cooking, particularly in Ireland, where a type of seaweed called Irish moss is a common source of carrageenan.

Carrageenan is valued for its ability to create a gel-like texture and improve the texture and mouthfeel of many food products. It is commonly used in the food industry to thicken, stabilise, and improve the texture of products such as dairy products (like ice cream and yogurt), plant-based milk alternatives, processed meats, and some desserts.

As noted by the authors, perlite filter aid is utilized in the carrageenan processing fields because of its large specific surface area and distinctive pore structure. However, during the carrageenan processing, a significant amount of carrageenan residue containing perlite is created. 20% to 30% of organic matter and polysaccharides are absorbed during the carrageenan synthesis process, blocking the pore size of perlite, with the majority of this organic matter turning into piled solid wastes. When carrageenan residue containing organic matter is stacked carelessly, it produces a variety of pollutants, including sulfide, greenhouse gases, and methane, which can seriously harm the environment and waste resources.

Liu et al. studied a new process to recover perlite from carrageenan residue by combining extraction with low concentrations of food-grade hydrogen peroxide (H2O2) and hydrochloric acid (HCl) in order to realize resource utilization of carrageenan residue. Optimum conditions are as follows: 2% H2O2 and 0.2 mol/L HCl for 2 h at 90 °C. Recycled perlite was utilized repeatedly to obtain refined carrageenan. recovered perlite affected the properties of carrageenan was examined, and the viability and timing of its reuse were deliberated. It was found out that it is possible to recover perlite while preserving resources and lowering pollution levels in the environment by breaking down the organic materials in carrageenan residue.

Radiation Shielding Ability of Perlite

A very interesting study was published at the beginning of the year in the international journal Radiation Physics and Chemistry, entitled “Experimental investigation of gamma radiation shielding ability of some building materials in Bitlis (Turkey).” The building materials considered were Ahlat stones, perlite and pumice, all mined from the Bitlis region in eastern Turkey, as well bims block samples obtained by mixing them. The author determined whether these materials, which are preferred as building materials, protect people who spend a lot of time in buildings from radiation by calculating linear attenuation coefficients (μ) experimentally for gamma energies at 88.04 ±0.01 keV, 356.50 keV, 661.60 keV, 834.80 ± 0.04 keV and 1173.20–1332.50 keV (for 109Cd, 133Ba, 137Cs, 54Mn and 60Co radioactive point sources) using gamma spectrometry with a NaI scintillation detector. Also, critical values of photon absorption percentages, half value layer (HVL), tenth value layer (TVL), and mean free path (MFP) values of the samples were calculated. The linear attenuation coefficient indicates the radiation absorbency. In addition, the smaller the HVL and TVL values, the better the shielding property of the material used.

All materials, but especially the bim blocks, have high linear attenuation coefficient, denoting good shielding behavior.

By comparing the overall behavior of the tested materials, the author concluded that increasing the perlite additive in these building materials positively affects gamma ray absorption. The radiation absorption ability of these bims block used as building materials can be further increased by changing the amount of perlite and pumice in their content.

Sound Absorption of Bricks Using Perlite/Carbon Nanotubes Mixture (Pan et al., 2023)

The study focuses on the preparation of perlite-carbon nanotubes (CNTs) mixtures and their application in the building sector, with a focus on sound absorption properties and how it is affected by the material properties. frequency bands only. Thus, their efforts have been made to investigate the effects of CNTs on the sound absorption property for sound absorption perlite brick coated with CNTs/perlite slurry. CNTs coated on the expanded perlite as the sound absorption composite materials by onestep method and two-step method were compared with expanded perlite mixed with CNTs granular to investigate the best way of enhancing the acoustic performance. Effects of the design parameters (grain size, grain combination and thickness) on the acoustic performance of sound absorption perlite brick were also studied. It should be noted that the production process was first developed by Pilatos et al. back in 2016 (Pilatos et al., 2016).

As shown in Figure 5, the average sound absorption coefficient increases by decreasing the particle size. Also, the sound absorption bricks with grain combination perlite showed the best acoustic performance in a full frequency, attributing to larger diameter particles formed skeleton, and the pore between skeletons was filled with small diameter particles. The experiment results showed that the sound absorption bricks with different slurry achieved better acoustic performance comparing to pure sound absorption brick. Moreover, The CNTs grown on the expanded perlite helped to improve the acoustic performance of CNTs/ perlite slurry remarkably.

Technical Q&As Inquiring Minds Want to Know More About Perlite!

The number of inquiries in the first 11 months of 2023 was 81% of the quantity of last year for this same time frame [124 for 2023 vs 154 for 2022]. Inquiries dropped off in the last 3 months compared to previous years.

Construction: • A user wanted information on lightweight concrete and possible local suppliers of aggregate, which were provided.

Insulation: • A user wanted information and sources of expanded perlite for cryogenic material in the midwest United States. We provided contact information for production facilities near them.

The majority of the inquiries continue to be in the construction, environmental, filtration, and insulation areas.

• An inquirer wanted to know the compressive strength expected with subfloor perlite insulation as well as possible sources. We sent a Perlite Institute bulletin on subflooring as well as nearby production facilities.

• Cryo application wanted to know how much settling one could expect in a large ship and how long the perlite would last. Static wall testing years ago indicated up to 2% settling based on static wall tests over several year period. The perlite does NOT change insulating properties over time unless it becomes wet.

• A user wanted information and sources of silicone-coated expanded perlite for wall fill. Provided them with possible local sources. Many perlite producers do not provide treated material due to the additional costs not being supported by the market.

Treated perlite does not insulate any different than untreated.

• 25,000-gallon underground storage tanks partially buried showed carbon monoxide concentration after 20 days of pumping. Expect a problem with leaking from the tank – it is not from the expanded perlite.

• The inquirer wanted to know the estimated R-value for various brick sizes. Sent Perlite Institute bulletins on loose fill in different sizes and density blocks.

• We replied to Adisak Pakdhi inquiry on the performance of perlite in cryogenic applications.

Horticulture: • A person wanted guidance on growing capsicum in hydroponic use with only perlite. She was putting blocks on top of the perlite instead of burying them in the perlite.

Blocks were drying out and not germinating properly. Sent her several Perlite Institute bulletins on horticultural applications.

• Had an extended Zoom call with a Perlite Institute member on horticultural background and suggestions on information that could help users. Recommended videos from Ausperl on absorption difference of grades and tree growth impact in Israel.

• A member wanted assistance on why a new silicone treatment was not as effective as others and required slowing down production. Each silicone has a temperature range for its curing.

Outside that range, coating is only partially effective. The producer found a lower temperature at an additional point when the production rate was reduced. Need to add more cooling air when using the different silicone.

Industrial:

• A user thought cryo perlite would lose its characteristics over time. It will not. If there is a leak, then wetted perlite would need to be removed. After the leak is repaired, then additional perlite would need to be added.

• A user wanted to know the angle of repose for powder. It varies depending on the gradation of the powder. Recommend quick test on specific material to determine what it is. For very fine powder, one often aerates the bottom of the silo.

• Subfloor insulation – concern that perlite would change over time. It will not.

• A group in Calicuta wanted information on perlite fillers for autobody application.

Recommended doing research with very fine expanded filler perlite and fine microspheres.

Environmental:

Filtration: • The inquirer wanted recommendations on a precoat tank availability. Informed them that the Perlite Institute does NOT sell anything. Did recommend that they do NOT use a high-shear mixer in the tank because it will destroy PFAs. Told them that PFAs were much lighter in wet cake density and would require less quantity than diatomite filter aids.

• A member wanted historical research work on perlite for use in chicken houses.

• A Perlite Institute member wanted PowerPoint presentations on carbon footprint, which were provided.

• Member wanted past PowerPoint presentation on filtration and beer filtration, which was provided.

• DE user wanted guidance in changing to PFA. Recommended providing DE sample for PFA direct performance comparison.

Also, the need for mild dispersion is NOT high shear. Provided local sources' contact information for those near the user.

Persuasive Leadership: Relationships

We talk about “building relationships” so often that it has become trite. It’s a catchy phrase that’s overused and misunderstood. Having said that, it’s still extremely valuable as you lead through persuasive communication in one-on-one interactions.

This is probably a good place to confess that I have viewed people around me as tools to my goals. It has taken time and failure for me to adjust what I value. It takes a brave leader to pause while reading this and take an honest, hard look inwards.

Yet, I know you can and will. You wouldn’t be reading this if you didn’t aspire to be the best leader you can be.

Consider President Johnson, once again. In shepherding landmark legislation through Congress, he relied on his personal relationships with members of both the House and Senate. He knew their wives, and their kids, and what was important to them in their respective districts. By knowing the people he needed to work with intimately, Johnson leveraged these relationships to achieve his goals with remarkable speed.

You likely need to have successful people around you for you to succeed. I’m willing to be that they are cheering for you and want to be part of your success. So how do you get there? Here are three ways:

We often think of relationships as a means to an end. It is not the goal. Here’s a hard question for you to ponder: Do you really value those you lead?

This question requires a bit of soul searching. So often, we are focused on our goal and the things we need to accomplish, that people around us are seen as a means to an end. But here’s the thing: If that’s your thinking, those around you know it. They will feel expendable, and it won’t work.

How do you view the people around you? Do you acknowledge they are a person, not just a position?

Do you seek their success and value it?

1: Understand Your Audience Anyone who has read my work or listened to me on stage knows that I believe everything is about your audience. Always. This is not about you — it’s about them. This same principle applies as you lead through communication and specifically persuade in one-on-one meetings. The sooner you shift that mindset, the sooner you will find success.

Try this exercise. Think of one person critical in your orbit. Say his or her name out loud. Recall memories. Now, answer these questions: • What’s the biggest struggle in this person’s life right now?

What is keeping them awake at night?

• What do they value in life above everything else?

• What is their love language?

• What’s this person’s greatest dream for his or her professional career?

2: Give Them Your Most Valuable Asset: Your Time We are all busy. I get it. And I’m starting to believe that it’s more of an excuse than a reason. I’m also starting to wonder “why” we’re so busy. Perhaps it makes us feel important?

How often have you asked someone how they’re doing to hear them reply: “Busy!”?

Wouldn’t it be nice to jump off the hamster wheel of busyness and instead lead a meaningful and mindful life?

Giving these key people in your lifetime will change everything in your relationship with them and their willingness to be a part of your vision and dreams.

Again, let’s reflect on that same person that you brought to mind in question number one. With that specific person in mind, ask the following: Do you have a regular, established time to meet 1:1?

• When was the last time you had a spontaneous time together just to catch up with what’s happening in his or her life? Or just to offer praise and appreciation with no other agenda?

• When was the last time you planned a special time away with just this person? Perhaps that looks like leaving the office early one afternoon and hitting a craft brewery with no objective other than to be together.

• When was the last time you made a positive response to something they posted online?

3: Open Communication That’s Easy, Comfortable, Free Flowing Can you recall a time that you met with someone with high hopes of a productive conversation only to find that the encounter was stiff and lacked a meaningful connection?

As the person leading the organization, it’s your responsibility to create the atmosphere and conditions for conversations that bring value.

Again, let’s recall the person you named in question number one.

Perhaps say his or her name again just to make this person fresh in your thoughts. And then ask yourself the following questions: • When was the last time you asked for feedback AND then implemented the ideas you feel fit well into your organization?

And did you give this person the credit?

• When was the last time that you talked and demonstrated that you were listening by taking notes?

• Have you ever become defensive in talking with this person?

• When addressing a situation that didn’t go well, did you blame this person or accept responsibility yourself?

As you work to accomplish your goals and dreams, I hope you realize those close you are one of your strongest assets. They are not a tool for your success. They are a treasure. And if you concretely believe that and your actions demonstrate it, they will believe you. That makes accomplishing your dreams just got that much easier.
