“The Holland Marsh is located just 15 minutes away from Pickering College and makes up half of the “Specialty Crop Areas” in Ontario. It is a recognized producer of a very large percentage of the vegetables grown in Ontario. The Seasonal Agricultural Worker program brings roughly 900 workers to the Marsh. But unluckily for them, they are not treated to the standard that they should be treated. Ontario migrant farm workers experience 12-hour days, low pay and cramped living quarters—all with the expectation of earning enough money to help their families back home. These workers are afraid they will be sent home if they speak up. That is why I am taking action by improving their living conditions using shipping containers to create comfortable housing.”

Reflecting on the importance of innovation with Peter Sturrup, Head of School

That Albert Einstein was a pretty smart guy. Not only did he come up with a theory or two that became foundational pillars of the understanding of matter, energy and the structure of the universe, he also had a few insightful quotations attributed to him over the years. One of his most well known is that “the definition of insanity is doing the same thing over and over again and expecting different results.”

I think of that perspective as I write these words and review this issue of The Pillars. The theme of the issue is “Inspiring Innovation” and when you think about it, inspiring innovation is the foundation of an educational approach that makes sure we do not keep doing the same thing over and over again.

Now I know that many people feel that innovation is one the most overused buzzwords of recent times.

Business leaders, politicians, start-ups, media and yes, even schools, are all talking about it so much that people are becoming a little tired of the cliché. However, that does not actually alter the importance that innovation must play in our society. And that is why innovation is so important to our school.

Fundamentally, any school must be about defining, teaching, practicing and inspiring innovation. One of the most important purposes of education is to equip the next generation to grapple with the big issues they will be facing. Einstein had another great thought. He said, “We cannot solve our problems with the same thinking we used in creating them.” Our job as a school then, as our mission statement says, is to instil in each individual the ability and responsibility to make the world greater, better and more beautiful than they discovered it.

In the words of that mission statement are the seeds of the personal importance of inspiring innovation.

For, when we say “responsibility” it means that our student will have the character—the compassion, the integrity, the respect, the understanding—to know that there are people in the world who are disadvantaged or displaced, or that there are issues that are not fair, or just—and that they will have the character to recognize that inequity and say—“that is not right,” or “I cannot stand for that,” or “I need to do something.” That is what responsibility is.

And when we say “ability” it means that they will have the skills to take action. It is not just math or reading skills, it is problem solving, interpersonal skills, outside-the-box thinking, communication and critical-thinking skills. Those are the abilities that will give these young people the power to do something of value, to make change. That is the heart of innovation.

For 176 years our school has been empowering young minds to learn how to make a difference in the world. For 176 years our school has been inspiring young minds to be more innovative. When we can prepare them, encourage them, yes, even inspire them to look around the world, see the challenges and then to ask the question, “What can I do?” I believe we will see that we have also been preparing them to know exactly what to do. If they can do that, our students will live lives of greater meaning, fulfilment and purpose.

That is what makes innovation so important.

Innovation is a thread that runs through all aspects of a Pickering College education.

It is at the heart of the Global Leadership Program and it’s preparing our students for whatever the future brings. And that future even includes space travel.

Pickering College alumnus Nico Macias ’14 just graduated from Northeastern University with a bachelor’s degree in Mechanical Engineering and in July began his job as an actual rocket scientist. The full-time vehicle structures engineer for SpaceX is working on the Falcon rocket platform / heavy rocket platform and will be moving towards Starship which is SpaceX’s interplanetary manned air vehicle.

“As a structures engineer what I do is design and analyze structures and mechanisms inside of a rocket,” he explains. “At SpaceX a lot of people are divided into the design side or the analysis side. Our group is in this middle place where we get to go around and if there’s a really interesting problem that pops up we solve it and come back home—it’s a little bit of everything so it’s quite a lot of fun.”

Macias’ program at Northeastern University included three six-month co-operative education placements which gave him his first taste of working for SpaceX. He actually designed and built some parts on the rockets SpaceX has recently tested which, according to Macias, “you can almost sort of see (because they are really small) on the outside of the rocket … they’re essentially a new hardware retention system for the really big bolts.”

For Macias, hardware-based problem solving has always been his thing. Back when he was a student at Pickering College he was a member of the Munk team which he credits for preparing him for his current path. “I really got to dip my toes in designing and making things,” he says. His group’s project was to design a better way to distribute and engage users of a product called Sprinkles, created to combat anemia. Macias took a hardware approach to the solution and he and his teammates developed a pill bottle with a mechanism that when rotated back and forth dispensed a consistent dose.

“It was also refillable which meant the user had to bring it back to the nurse … and each pill bottle would have its own serial code on the outside so they could track actual usage,” he explains. “My experience with the Munk team really helped me to get into Northeastern and set me on a path of where I can actually do things I think are a good idea.”

For instance, for his Capstone project at Northeastern, Macias and a team of fellow engineers designed a miniature wearable blood sampling device geared to athletes.

“We wanted wearable so that athletes can sample their blood during exercise, which is important because there are blood biomarkers like lactate, cortisol and oxygen that we currently cannot track during a workout and those biomarkers change in levels,” he explains. “So imagine a marathon runner checking their blood at miles 10 and 20 to see how their blood biomarkers are changing to inform their training regimen—there’s definitely a market for it.”

The device is almost painless and uses microneedles to draw a small amount of blood for analysis. Though he and his fellow students won’t be the ones to take the product to market as they already

have jobs elsewhere, they created the prototype and obtained a provisional patent which they’re hoping will spark some interest from a couple of companies.

Macias chose Northeastern because of the experiential learning opportunities that it offered, much like the education he received at Pickering College. Through Kim Bartlett, Director of Teaching and Learning, Macias connected with Grade 7 student Thomas Bianco earlier this year, who appears to be following a similar path.

Bianco has a passion for inventing. His recent prototype of a fully-functional prosthetic hand which he designed for his uncle won first prize in the Intermediate category at the Youth Innovation Fair, hosted by the Town of Aurora. “I told my uncle about the idea first because I had to take measurements of his arm. He’s known that I’ve always been into this kind of stuff,” says Bianco. “It made me really happy because he said to me after it was finished ‘I knew one day you would do something incredible.’”

Bianco credits PC for opening his eyes to new technology that only furthered his aspirations to design and invent.

“If it wasn’t for the school getting a 3D printer, I would have never known about 3D printing—it was a big step for me,” explains Thomas. “The teachers have been great with teaching me the program and I have had the ability to print things here, like my entry to the Youth Innovation Fair last year.” In Grade 6, Thomas took home top honours in the Junior category at the same event with his toothpaste dispensing toothbrush.

Like Macias, Bianco has his sights on attending university for mechanical engineering, and aspires to one day work for Tesla or SpaceX. “He’s way ahead of where I was back when I was in high school with the level of CAD (computer aided design) work that he’s doing and successfully printing off a working mechanism—it’s really impressive,” says Macias. “Finding that something and taking active participation in it will drive innovation but also set you apart and on a path to success.”

As for Macias, he’s excited about what the future holds. “I’m really looking forward to learning a lot as an engineer but also being valuable to society and working on projects of consequence that are really going to further technology and further our ability to explore and solve problems.”

Innovative thinking paves the way for students to be fl xible and adaptable

At Pickering College, building the foundation for innovative thinking begins with our youngest learners. In the classroom, faculty ensure the lessons have the flexibility to reach all students so that they are engaged and excited to learn.

“Education is constantly changing and, as teachers, we are continuously finding new instructional strategies that support student thinking, asking questions and risk taking,” explains Sarah Demarco, Grade 3 teacher. “It is important for our students to learn to be innovative thinkers because the world we live in changes quickly in a short period of time and our students need to be flexible and adaptable.”

I-Think Tools One of the ways the faculty is supporting this approach to learning is by introducing an integrative thinking approach to problem solving. Students in Grades 3 to Grade 5 have begun using a wealth of I-Think tools including using the Ladder of Inference, Causal Modelling and Positive Problem Solving with a Pro-Pro Chart. Demarco says she finds that integrative thinking really helps teachers to facilitate student learning and readies them to take on larger more complicated challenges, such as their participation in Rotman School of Management’s I-Think Challenge 2019.

“The kids know the problem better...”

–Surena Zadhoush, Grade 3 student Students in Grade 3 and Grade 6 are acting as consultants to the Peacebuilders’ Restorative Schools programs. The students have been asked: How might we support a culture of wellbeing at elementary schools? Students need to consider whether to build capacity with adults or students in the school community and whether to build capacity within each school or for Peacebuilders to be available as experts when conflict happens.

“As a result, for this challenge we have been exploring themes of wellbeing, conflict, community and belonging,” Demarco explains.

“It’s really interesting to hear the students’ perspectives as they explain their thinking.”

“The kids know the problem better, because sometimes kids can’t really explain the problem to the adults but they can explain it to their classmates,” says Surena Zadhoush, Grade 3. Using a tool like the Pro-Pro Chart Zadhoush says “you can focus on the one subject and whatever comes to your mind you just write it down.”

Rather than tell our students how to solve a problem, we provide them with the tools they need to work through it.

Innovative thinking also is incorporated into the math curriculum in Junior School, exposing students to real-world problems that require collaboration and flexibility in their thinking.

Students in Grades 1-5 participate in the First LEGO League and First LEGO League Junior programs that focus on building interest in science, technology, engineering and math (STEM) through a real-world challenge.

“Our students need to be researchers, designers, and engineers all while collaborating in teams and using their critical-thinking skills and imagination,” says Demarco.

Exploring Canadian Politics The Grade 5 class were thrilled to meet Her Honour The Honourable Elizabeth Dowdeswell, Lieutenant Governor of Ontario when they visited Queen’s Park in March. The students were curious about her life experiences and her passion for promoting sustainable communities. The class invited Her Honour to attend their My Key Idea presentations in May, which she happily accepted. Pickering College

was deeply honoured to host this special guest. 1 Discovering our Furry Friends Grade 1 students have been busy learning about forest animals and their habitats.

Each child selected a forest animal to research, produced an appropriate habit and then enjoyed writing a non-fiction book about their chosen animal. 2 The Best Part of Me The Grade 3 class discussed seeing themselves in a positive

light, influenced by the poetry they read from the book, “The Best Part of Me.” The literature inspired the students to write an opinion piece that answered the question, “What is the best part of you?” They presented to their peers, who acted as photographers, and each student chose where they wanted their photograph to be taken and selected a pose. 3 Student-led conferencing debuts for Junior School In February, we were delighted to welcome our

Junior Kindergarten to Grade 5 parents for student-led conferences where our students excitedly shared their recent work! 4 Seussical KIDS After months of hard work and preparation by our Kindergarten to Grade 6 students, PC’s production of Seussical KIDS brought all of Dr. Seuss’ beloved characters to life onstage in this fantastical musical extravaganza. Congratulations to the cast, crew and teachers for an amazing production! 5

MEGHAN KEREAKOU Using Her Voice The moment you meet Meghan Kereakou, it’s no surprise that she recently received accolades for her speaking ability, having represented PC at the Conference of Independent Schools (CIS) Public Speaking Competition. The Grade 5 student’s speech focused on something she’s passionate about—her husky, Ky—as she explained the numerous benefits of dog ownership, from learning responsibility to getting exercise through walks. It was from the help of her peers and teachers that Meghan was able to perfect her speech and improve her presentation skills. “I practiced every day in front of teachers and my friends who would give me feedback, such as I need to slow down, use more hand gestures and try to speak more clearly,” Meghan explains.

“The competition itself was a bit scary but because I practiced so much and was very prepared, it was a lot of fun.”

Meghan first aspired to be a PC Puma at age seven, when she learned about the school through a family friend. “I wasn’t being challenged academically in public school, and Pickering College has allowed me to excel, especially at one of my favourite subjects; math,” Meghan says.

She also alludes to the accepting culture here, as Meghan describes her classmates as being friendly and welcoming of differences.

The unique learning opportunities provided at PC are not lost on Meghan, who speaks highly of a visit to Queen’s Park when her class was studying government and the fun outdoor education excursions to the Blue & Silver Farm.

“We also get to do things that I know I would never have the chance elsewhere, like have lunch with Her Honour, The Honourable Elizabeth Dowdeswell, Lieutenant Governor of Ontario. This is what makes it pretty special to be at PC.”

Innovation through

In Middle School the focus is on providing students with opportunities to explore through interactive, hands-on projects.

Through the Global Leadership Program, in conjunction with the curriculum, students can pursue what they’re passionate about while attaining the skills needed to be successful in life.

For instance, during the Middle School’s Pillar Pursuits days, students could choose from a number of workshops including YouTubing, game design, shoe design, archery and survival, movement and mindfulness, drones, arts and crafts, and cooking. What made this experience particularly unique is that students selected the options themselves and were given the opportunity to not only participate but to lead certain topics of personal interest.

Gordon Chiu, the school’s technology integration specialist, was the academic advisor to the session on drones led by Grade 7 students Thomas Bianco and Alex Cooper. On the first Pillar Pursuit

day, Thomas and Alex not only gave the presentation to lead off the workshop, they also created and led the interactive elements including building the drones.

“On the subsequent workshop day, students brought in their own drones so that they could design and 3D-print a clamping mechanism onto their drones so they could attempt to carry items. Of course there was some drone flying as well,” explains Chiu.

In addition to the off-timetable days, the school’s curriculum ensures hands-on learning is integrated whenever possible.

For instance, Grade 8 science teacher Chris Coyne recently taught a section on cells and the different ways things move in and out of a cell. To reinforce the lesson and extend the learning, he took the class outside to replicate this type of system using bubble solution and straws.

“One group dropped the straw in the solution by accident and then noticed

it went right through the bubble wall,” Coyne explains. “When we talked about simple diffusion and that it has to be the same type of material so the lipids go through, you see that instant connection with the students—‘oh it’s the same, it goes right through, but if it’s not the same it will pop the bubble or your cell membrane won’t obviously go through.’”

Christopher Squires. “One of the most interesting things I’ve made was a card using lights and wire, so that when we pushed a button in the corner of the card, the lights would turn on. Since this was around Christmas time, I made all of the corners of a present light up.”

Ambassadors Volunteering in the Community Student Ambassadors proudly represented Pickering College at the annual Sharon Temple Heritage Celebration in June.

As part of the historical evening, PC Ambassadors offered tours of the Sharon Temple site and museum, highlighting interesting details about the nearly 200-year-old structure and adjacent buildings. The local landmark represents the Children of Peace’s vision of a society based on the values of peace, equality and social justice. 2

Designing our Future Grade 7 students Thomas Bianco, Harrison Frank, and Sophia Jeffery participated in the 2019 Future Prize Day hosted by the Future Design School. Participants were challenged to design a solution to solve the question: How might we leverage innovative technology to find a solution for wasted food at Pickering College? They came up with an application called ‘Skip the Waste’ to connect our school with local community organizations.

The app would display the amount of food that has not been consumed, which would be packaged and made available to people who need

it. Our students presented their idea to a panel of expert judges who, along with teachers from other schools, provided the team with excellent feedback. 3 Expression of Self Grade 8 students welcomed guests for their Expression of Self presentations and gallery walk. Students displayed what they’re passionate about including a six-word memoir.

This project allows the Grade 8 students to explore their strengths to help better understand who they are and prepare for Senior School next year. 4

VICTORIA ZALEWSKI Freedom to Explore Whether it’s taking piano lessons after school or exploring her love of debate in her chosen elective, Grade 8 student Victoria Zalewski continues to expand all of her interests and develop as a wellrounded student.

Victoria began attending Pickering College in Grade 7 and has greatly appreciated the opportunity PC provides its students to explore their passions. “This year has been a great year for me, from being able to travel to places like St. Donat and create memories with my friends, to having more freedom to choose electives and explore what I like to do has been very beneficial,” explains Victoria.

Victoria is at the end of completing the Middle School Pillar Years, a program that is rooted in the objective of helping students to figure out who they are and what they are capable of achieving. For her final project, the Expression of Self, Victoria has chosen to convey her passion for writing, which has grown out of a love for reading that her mother instilled in her from a young age.

The sky’s the limit for Victoria who aspires to combine her favourite subjects of writing, history and language to pursue a career in possibly law or journalism. Her love of history and language stems from her heritage; Polish is her first language and she often visits her extended family in Poland during the summer. “Both my parents are Polish immigrants and I just love visiting Poland as it’s fun to see my family and the history in that country runs so deep,” she says.

As she prepares for the next chapter at PC starting Senior School this fall, she will continue to explore her interests through the opportunities the school provides, becoming a global leader who’ll make the world more beautiful than when she found it.

Filtering of farmed produce Students develop and pitch innovative solution at Global Ideas Institute

For nearly 10 years, Pickering College has participated in an annual challenge to tackle a real-world problem without a solution, hosted by the Global Ideas Institute, an initiative of the Munk School of Global Affairs and Public Policy at the University of Toronto.

This year’s team, comprised of Grade 12 students Vanessa Gardner, Emily Golding, Brooke Baker, Rachel Sorbara and Grade 11 student Madeleine Rickman, was tasked with solving the issue of plastics and plastic waste in the world. With the project’s direction entirely left up to each team, our students decided to tackle microplastics in farmed produce and, bucking convention, examined their issue at the local level with an eye to potentially scaling it up globally.

“They started thinking about how plastics enter the water table,” says Kim Bartlett, Director of Teaching and Learning at Pickering College. “Farmers growing food, taking water from that water table and spraying it onto produce. Therefore, the red peppers that you buy in the grocery store have already been coated in microplastics. So the team designed a filter system that could be put onto irrigation systems, using graphene and adaptors, so it’s actually able to filter out the microplastics from the water when it’s being irrigated.”

Armed with a slick presentation that included a video (with help from Justin Kim, Grade 12), a product logo (with help from Lili Strawbridge, Grade 12), and a proper engineering poster, our students blew the panel of judges away.

Panelist Paula Gallo, Project Manager at Evergreen Brick Works in Toronto, says what really struck people about the PC team’s presentation was that it focused on working out the details in a local context with local partners first, before making the leap of applying it globally.

“There was a lot of murmuring about them doing a fantastic job! The girls seemed really confident in how they were presenting their product … like they had really thought it through,” says Gallo.

“They came up with a very practical solution—it was innovative in the sense that I don’t think anyone had thought of it in the room—and they were able to answer questions really well.”

Fellow panelist, Kris Hornberg who is the Manager, Program & Strategic Initiatives with Solid Waste Management Services for the City of Toronto adds, “I think that there is a viability for this type of product in the market. “Our students are outperforming other students and this is a measuring stick,” says Bartlett. “Even though we don’t receive a gold medal (it’s not a gold-medal type of system, it’s all based on feedback) the polish of their pitch, the quality of their slides and the fact they used Roger Martin’s Play to Win business strategy, just the level of production quality and thoughtfulness is incredible. In nine years, I’ve only had three prototyping projects—or potentials —that were given this level of feedback.”

Hornberg adds, “I often meet with corporate executives who have new garbage-to-gold solutions they would like to pitch, and often even very basic questions I have about these technologies are met with blank stares. The presentation from Pickering was rock solid, well-rehearsed and the level of effort given really made it stand out. Add to that a genuinely innovative idea where farmers assist in becoming part of the solution and I do believe that they are onto something.”

Brooke Baker, Grade 12, says after going through this experience she feels well equipped to work on a large-scale project at the university level.

“The originality of our product allowed for our team to stand out, while our detailed business plan showed its feasibility,” says Baker. “Being able to perform extensive research on a problem I cared about gave me a chance to share my views to the wider community. Having to pitch a solution to a panel gave me great practice that I could now implement in future employment opportunities.”

Students Step-Up for Prostate Cancer An inspirational group of Senior School students and staff conquered the Step-Up Challenge for Prostate Cancer Canada in March. Not only did the PC team race up iconic skyscrapers in Toronto but also helped lead the way to a better tomorrow for Canadians affected by prostate cancer. Our PC representatives helped raise money by climbing TD Canada Tower (56 floors), RBC South Tower (40 floors) and Scotia Tower (68 floors). Well done! 1 5

Power and Politics Jacob DiCarlo is back in class after spending a week in Ottawa getting an insider’s view of the Canadian political scene. The Grade 10 student participated in Forum for Young Canadians, a weeklong program that immerses Canadian students in the exciting world of national politics and public affairs through activities and presentations on politics, policy and international trade. 2 When Science Satisfies Your Sugar Cravings!

Mr. Coyne’s Grade 11 chemistry class continues to learn through innovative ways as they studied the chemistry of cooking. When chemistry and cooking collide, the results are, well, delicious!

Students worked with our Dining Services team to create chocolate apricot tortes. 3 Importance of Renewable Energy The Grade 11 Environmental Science class recently participated in some hands-on learning about the importance of renewable energy sources. They simulated global energy use, varying the relative amounts of renewable and non-renewable resources. Students who had limited access to renewable resources were not able to continue the simulation for as long as those who had greater access. A Scientific Escape!

Grades 9 science students recently had their shot at solving the The HertzsprungRussel (HR) Diagram Escape room, which was incorporated into their study of the universe. The students learned about stars and their properties, examining how we see stars from Earth and how we use the HR Diagram to predict a star’s life cycle, size, luminosity and temperature. 5 Enhancing Creativity Through Innovation Seven Senior School students travelled with Ms. Burk to the CIS Visual Arts Festival in January. The varied workshops provided our students with opportunities to experiment with abstract painting, filmmaking, photography, digital art, environmentally-themed explorations and sculpture. Photo courtesy of St. Andrew’s College 6 Students Participate in UN Climate Change Video Conference In December, PC’s Grade 12 World Issues class linked live to the UN Climate Change Conference in Poland, connecting with schools from six different continents who are members of the UNESCO Associated Schools Project Network (ASPnet).

Students discussed climate change and traditional knowledge with leading experts and shared their current schoolbased projects on climate change with their peers from around the world.

ASPnet is a program that was established in 1953 to encourage schools worldwide to educate students on issues related to UNESCO’s “overarching goal of promoting peace and international understanding.” 7

Representing Canada at World Debate Championship Katherine Starr took on the world’s best high school English-language debaters in April at the World Individual Debating and Public Speaking Championship hosted in Toronto. Katherine was one of 18 students representing Team Canada at this event that welcomed over 125 competitors from 10 English speaking countries to compete in Persuasive Speaking, Impromptu Speaking, Interpretive Reading and Canadian Parliamentary Debate.

Katherine reached finals and finished an incredible 6th place in her interpretive reading of Before We Were Yours by Lisa Wingate. After competing in all four categories, including delivering her persuasive speech on “The Incel Rebellion,” she achieved an impressive 25th place finish overall. Congratulations! 1

Taking Action The Grade 12 Capstone project tasks students with developing an innovative solution to an issue of local or global significance, and then implementing an action plan to address the issue.

Every project is unique and students are supported in shaping their solution through university level research workshops, debates, meetings with mentors and industry experts. The program concludes with the Capstone pitch day where students present their solutions to panels of teachers and professionals. Congratulations to 2019 winner Vanessa Gardner (second from left) whose action plan paired student volunteers to run errands for the elderly.

Grade 12 Students Signed to Become U SPORTS Athletes Congratulations to Grade 12 students Lexi Giorgi and Adam Murphy who both have signed to become varsity athletes at their respective universities, this fall.

Adam has committed to become a Dalhousie Tiger for the Varsity Men’s Soccer Team while Lexi will be suiting up for the Queen’s Golden Gaels with the Varsity Women’s Hockey team. The PC community is very proud of their hard work and accomplishments both in and outside the classroom! 3

DUC HUY TRAN Taking Challenges in Stride Over 11,000 kilometres from his home in Vietnam, Huy Tran’s first day of school in Grade 11 was a more intimidating experience than that of the typical PC student. It was his first time in a new country, having to acclimate himself to a different culture while communicating in English, which is not his first language.

Huy took the challenges in stride.

“It was easier than I expected to get immersed being a boarding student for the first time,” Huy explains. “I knew I had some advantages as I had studied English in Vietnam for years, so it made it easier for me to communicate.”

The Grade 12 student recognized very quickly the advantages PC afforded him, particularly to pursue his passion to make a difference in the world.

Huy recently completed his year-long Capstone project, which focused on improving and developing a new method for teaching ESL (English as a second language) programs in school. He was motivated to pursue this endeavor as he can relate to others in a similar situation, particularly boarding students, who face many language barriers that can hinder their ability to excel and grow in an educational environment. “It is very difficult for a person to enjoy their life when they cannot communicate well with others,” Huy explains. “By helping them learn English in a more efficient way so they’re not afraid to talk to other people, they will have more opportunities, it will build their confidence, their quality of life will improve and they can enjoy their time here in Canada.”

This fall, Huy will attend the University of Toronto to study commerce. Although he visits his family in Vietnam as often as he can, Canada has become his second home and he hopes to continue to build his future in this country.

Red House wins it all!

Red House took the coveted top honours as this year’s winning House! It was the first time they have won the House Championship since 2002. Congratulations to all members of Red House for their positive contributions to the PC community and school spirit this year.

Our badminton team had an amazing season! In mixed doubles (Michael Wang and Annie Zheng) and women’s doubles (Ava Khansari and Emma Zhang), Pickering College made it all the way to the quarterfinals of the 2019 Badminton OFSAA Championship in North Bay. In addition, Emma Zhang and Annie Zheng won gold in women’s doubles at the CISAA Badminton Championship.

Athlete of the Year Congratulations to Adam Murphy and Bethany Suen, recipients of Athlete of the Year. This award is for a graduating student who has participated in all three seasons of sport, has exceptional athletic ability and is often the most valuable teammate for their effort, skill, determination and drive to succeed.

A special honour, this award is not given out every year—it is reserved for a graduating student who truly deserves it and whose contribution to athletics exemplifies the motto The Joy of Effort.

Track & Field Pickering College brought home several championship titles this season! Among them are Omar Ozturk (2019 CISAA Junior Boys’ High Jump Champion), Vasiliki Kiriakou (2019 Senior Girls’ 100 Metre Low Hurdles Champion and 2019 Senior Girls 100 Metre Low Hurdles Champion), Bethany Suen (2019 Senior Girls’ 400 Metre Champion), and our relay team of Celine Barratt, Kirsten Yip, Vasiliki Kiriakou and Bethany Suen (2019 4x100 Metre Senior Girls’ Relay Champion).

In addition, Bethany Suen and Omar Ozturk both qualified for OFSAA, competing in the Senior Girls’ 400 Metre Hurdles and the Junior Boys’ High Jump, respectively. Congratulations, to all of our athletes for their dedication and hard work!

Slam Dunk!

Junior Boys’ Basketball Team Dominates the Court!

The Junior Boys’ basketball team dominated on the court this year, completing a near perfect season with a 9-1 record. The squad capped off their successful run by winning the CISAA Division III Championship title, a feat they have not achieved since 2016.

“They really came together and put their differences and egos behind them, which translated to us winning more games.”

Daleman also speaks to the leadership on the team, often found in Grade 10 player, Omar Ozturk. Ozturk, who just recently earned a roster spot on the Adidas Grassroots Elite Canada team, recognized there were three characteristics of this winning team that helped them climb to the top; “Teamwork, dedication and positivity is what led to our success,” states Ozturk. “There would be certain points in the game if we were losing, the morale would be down, but the players who had a leadership role on the team would lift others up to keep playing hard and more often than not, we found a way to win.”

The camaraderie that was built throughout these challenging games would be put to the test in the CISAA Championship Final against Albert College. The high-scoring game was decided on the very last play, where PC came out on top, with the buzzer sounding and the Pumas erupting in celebration, defeating Albert College by one basket with a final score of 78-76.

Head Coach Michael Daleman recognized the dynamic and chemistry among his players, both on and off the court, had a large part to do with the success of his team. “The boys played better as a team than in previous years, and continued to support each other throughout the season,” Daleman explains.

Bringing home the Championship banner that will be hung in Egan House was the highlight of the year for Ozturk and his teammates. Coaching a championship season was rewarding for Daleman, but it was his players that made it worthwhile.

“I really enjoyed coaching this year, the boys made it fun from practice to games, they worked hard so it made my job easy.”

Connecting Cultures Pickering College boasts a diverse student population, with one quarter of our students attending PC from outside of Canada. This offers all our students a range of perspectives and experiences shared inside and outside the classroom.

Within the boarding program itself, daily living and planned activities are opportunities to learn about different cultures and traditions. Day students are invited to join evening and weekend activities with their friends in boarding.

One boarding tradition is the annual Multicultural Dinner. Groups of students plan, budget, and shop for a variety of dishes they cook together in the PC kitchens. At the most recent Multicultural Dinner, dishes represented about 20 countries. Students shared family recipes and enjoyed an evening of food from around the world. This social event is an enjoyable way for students and boarding staff to learn more about the cultures our students represent.

“This is a wonderful opportunity for students to learn to work together and practice necessary life skills,” says Laura Mason, Director of Boarding. “Although the theme is food, the purpose is to highlight the diversity in which we have the privilege of living and provide an opportunity to learn about our students’ families, traditions and what is important to them.”

Simple, yet powerful messages of giving, gratitude, and seizing opportunities in life were shared with Pickering students by David Crook ’67.

Crook visited Pickering in April as a Leader in Residence, a program to bring outstanding and accomplished leaders to share their experience, insights, and advice to our students. Crook has decades of experience as an entrepreneur and business owner. His company was a world leader in highly technical automation manufacturing equipment. In 2015, Crook received the prestigious “50 best managed businesses in Canada” award.

More recently, he has been contributing his innovative mindset and philanthropy to Global Surgery and the Bethune Medical Development Association. He uses his contacts to collect donations of discarded medical equipment that is outdated by Canadian standards, but still safe and usable. The Global Surgery volunteer team has used the equipment to transform shipping containers into community care centres and surgical suites that are then transported to developing countries and moved as needed.

Throughout the day he visited with various classes including the Grade 3 and 4 classes working on LEGO Robotics, the Grade 11 entrepreneurship class, and the Grade 11 students whose Capstone projects are focusing on healthcare innovation. He shared with Pickering students that innovation was not just about ideas, but working with people who are open to new ways of doing things.

“Having a Leader In Residence with such a wealth of experience in both business and philanthropy is so inspirational for our students as they consider the direction their own lives will take,” says Julia Hunt, Director of the Global Leadership Program, “David’s thoughtful and detailed responses to questions about his businesses in the Grade 11 entrepreneurship class gave them a lot to both consider and aspire to. Connecting to an accomplished alumnus gives our current students a glimpse into the exciting potential of their future lives.”

During the radio interview with Crook, Kim confirmed that teacher care and attention to the development of students academically and as individuals continues today, as the two discussed changes to the buildings on campus over the years.

“There have been some physical changes but the ambiance and the feelings you get as you walk through the halls, they stay there,” says Crook.

His message to the senior students focused on the influence Pickering College had on his life, both the guiding values of the Athenian pledge and the lifelong friendships he made here. He told the students he keeps in closer touch with the friends he made during two years at Pickering than in all his years at university, attributing it to the closeness the students felt at Pickering and the strong sense of community. “The values and principles this school was founded on, if you continue to practice them, will serve you well your whole life.”

Queen’s University recently dedicated the landmark gate between Dunning Hall and Richardson Hall to PC Alumnus and Class of 1842 award winner John Meisel ’43. From the Queen’s Gazette: “A pioneer in research into political behaviour, Professor Meisel also wrote widely on Canadian elections, political parties, Quebec politics, science policy, and cultural policy. He was the founding editor of two prestigious academic journals, Canadian Journal of Political Science and International Science Review. From 1980 to 1983 he was chair of the Canadian Radio-television and Telecommunications Commission (CRTC) and later served as president of the Royal Society of Canada. His contributions to Canada were recognized in 1989 when he was made an Officer of the Order of Canada, and again in 1989 when he was promoted to Companion, the highest grade in the Order.”

Division, Ottawa. After retiring in 1977 he joined the RCMP Vets Association, where he served as vice president and membership chairman.

In memoriam, Kenneth Wilson ’48 passed away in 2018. Ken was on the football and basketball team at PC. He was the proud owner of Totem Tools & Equipment Ltd. on Main St., Vancouver, for over 35 years.

1950s

In memoriam, Bill MacMillan ’51 passed away on April 29, 2019, at the age of 88. A resident of Palmyra, Ontario, and formerly of Leamington, Bill was the beloved husband of Hazel and shared 69 happy years together on the family farm. A beloved father of five children and proud grandfather of nine, Bill loved listening to country music and was a fine pianist, guitarist and autoharp player. In this Senior year at Pickering College, Bill participated in a variety of sports and clubs including the Senior Hockey Team, Senior Football Team and the ’30 Club.1

In memoriam, John Maguire ’47 passed away in January 2019. John attended PC for five years. He was a member of the Student Committee and ’30 Club and was a lead in the Glee Club. He was a member of Blue House and played on both the Senior hockey and Senior football teams. John was awarded the Andrew J. Davis Scholarship award for his leadership in school activities.

After graduating from PC, John joined the RCMP.

In memoriam, Al Snider ’51 passed away in the summer of 2018. Al attended PC from 1945 to 1950. He was a Widdrington Award winner and member of Red House. Al had a fine career in education, eventually attaining the position of Director of Education in the West Parry Sound Board where he served for 19 years. Al was a proud member of the PC alumni community. 3

In memoriam, William Maguire ’52 passed away in July, 2018.

After Pickering College, Bill attended and graduated from Queen’s University in 1957.

He had a varied and successful career as a human resources leader.

In memoriam, Jack Eldridge ’57 passed away in 2018. Jack attended PC for one year, he was a member of the football, softball and track and field teams, and a member of the ’30 Club. For 32 years, Jack dedicated his career in the Precious Metals Lab at INCO in Sudbury. Jack was a member of the Pickering College Corporation from 1996 to 1997.

In memoriam, John Butler ’63 passed away in 2018.

John was at PC for three years, a member of the football and basketball teams, and a member of Red House.

Ken Greason ’64 and his wife Linda are Team Leaders with Therapeutic Paws of Canada, a non-profit organization of volunteers providing animal resources through regular visits to hospitals, residences and schools. Their Ganaraskan, Nicky, visits with seniors and children. 2

John Houston ’71 (pictured with sculptor Mattiusi Iyaituk) has two new films coming out this year from his company, Houston Productions Inc.: a documentary of the Inuit and Cree of Nunavki (Arctic, Quebec) and the growth of their co-operatives called Atautsikut/ Leaving None Behind; and a collaboration with Acadia University and Nova Scotia Mi’Kmaq on a classroom project that became a film, called Decolonizing 101. 4

Stephanie Branston ’95 now lives in Cambridge in the UK with her family, having worked for many years in sports marketing in London. She remembers her year at PC with very fond memories—the year that Peter Sturrup became Headmaster—and she would like to pass on her best to the students and teachers who were at PC during that year, all of whom made her year out a truly wonderful experience.

Congratulations to Navraj Grewal ’98 on his promotion to Lieutenant-Colonel and Commanding Officer of the 7th Toronto Regiment, Royal Canadian Artillery.

Nav is a graduate from the University of Toronto (BSc) and Seneca College (Civil Engineering Technology), and is the Technical Manager for a civil engineering firm in Markham. Nav was posted to Kandahar, Afghanistan, working with Task Force Kandahar and multi-national forces. A highlight for him was taking part in D-Day ceremonies in France with a group of military parachutists, completing a commemorative jump near Juno Beach. 1 Many thanks to Isabelle Payne ’98 for volunteering as a judge for the Grade 9 PUMA’s Den pitch projects. With her help, the top three groups were selected, resulting in donations being made to York Region Victim Services, the Newmarket Food Bank and Rose of Sharon.

Brett Lawson ’02 and Brad Lawson ’03, owners of BBL Energy, have brought a new innovative technology to the North American market to help redirect waste materials that currently end up in landfill or oceans into a reusable energy source. Their machines can process “dirty” plastic, which currently cannot be recycled, as well as used tires into high quality fuel oil,

natural gas and carbon ash.

With 30 machines operating around the world, BBL Energy is now ready to tackle the North American market. 3 Congratulations to Lisa Elliott ’03, her husband Matthew and big sister Sydney, as they welcomed Mason to the family on March 23, 2019. 4 Congratulations to Ali Gamble ’03 and her husband who followed their dream and opened a poultry farm, The Gamble Farm, in Muskoka.

Ben McCleave ’08 worked with the Ministry of Natural Resources and Forestry as a

wildlife researcher in northeastern Ontario before returning to Newmarket to work with Lotek Wireless Inc. Lotek provides equipment for fish and wildlife telemetry applications throughout the world. Ben will be travelling to provide support on wildlife research and monitoring projects.

Congratulations to Nicholas Sopuch ’13, who graduated last year from the London School of Economics and Political Science with a MSc in “China in a Comparative Perspective.” Nicholas is also a graduate from the University of Toronto, Trinity College with an BA in Peace, Conflict and Justice. Currently, he is working as the Chief of Staff at SaaStock in London, UK, where he’s expanding Europe’s largest SaaS conference to Sao Paulo, Hong Kong, New York, San Francisco, and Sydney. 8 Many thanks to Nicholas H. LaValle ’14 who volunteered as a “PUMAs DEN” judge this April. Nicholas helped to judge the Grade 9 Senior School students Global Leadership Program projects.

Faculty News

The Joshua Weinzweig Creative Writing Program welcomed back awardwinning author and former faculty member Dean Gessie.

This February, he ran a series of workshops with the Grade 12 English and Writer’s Craft classes.

Dean helped to found the Joshua Weinzweig Creative Writing Program at Pickering College and served as its director for many years.

Since retiring, Gessie published three novellas and has been shortlisted for a number of poems, short stories and flashfiction pieces in literary contests all around the world. Dean recently won first place in an international short story competition in India, called the Half and One Prize.

Dr. Martin Shubik ’43: A man of impactful professional accomplishments

One of Pickering College’s most distinguished alumni, Dr. Martin Shubik ’43, passed away in August 2018. He will be remembered for his significant impact on economic theory, and is considered the “father of the application of game theory to modern economic theory.”

Shubik first arrived in Canada with his mother and sister as evacuees from Britain during the Second World War. His mother sent him to Pickering after finding the local schools unsatisfactory. He was encouraged at Pickering by Headmaster Joe McCulley, and teachers Harry Beer and Barney Jackson.

Shubik is fondly remembered by John Meisel ’43 in his book A Life of Learning and Other Pleasures, “...his outstanding prowess was cerebral, although he was an enthusiastic archer and, in his university days, something of a water polo star. It is impossible to rank people of outstanding intelligence on a finely calibrated scale—

there are so many different kinds and manifestations—but amidst all the superbrains I have encountered, Martin places among the top two or three.”

After graduating from Pickering with the class of 1943, Shubik obtained degrees from the University of Toronto and Princeton University.

Shubik was a specialist in strategic analysis, the economics of corporate competition, and the study of financial institutions. He was a member of the Yale University faculty since 1963, and was a consultant to many major corporations and to the agencies of several governments. He also served as an expert witness in financial and economic litigation and wrote more than 20 books and over 300 academic papers.

Ann Smiley, Executive Director of Development, represented the Pickering College community at a memorial service

held at Yale in March 2019. Many of the memories shared of Shubik noted the warm hospitality at his home, and the long discussions over wine and good food, where economic theories and models would be related to reallife situations. Friends and colleagues remembered his sense of humour and integrity.

One of the most revealing reflections on Shubik was from Dr. Shyam Sunder, a professor at the Yale School of Management, who summed up his approach to his work, “He was always thinking about how to leave a better world behind him. That’s what drove his research and life’s work.”

We are proud to have had a man of such impactful professional accomplishments and remembered so warmly as a “great human being” as part of the PC alumni community. Our condolences to his family, friends, and colleagues.

Saying Goodbye

Pickering College would like to extend our thanks to PCA Chair Donna Fordyce for her many years of service. Donna has been an active volunteer since her family arrived in 2011. Not only has she led the PCA for the past five years, but was also a driving force on the Holiday Home Tour as Co-Chair and will continue that role in 2019. Over the years she has been a committee member for Staff Appreciation, Spring Luncheon and the New Family Mentor Program.

She has represented PC at Interguild and volunteered for numerous school events such as the Fulford Debate, Carnaval, Fun Fair and Ghost Tour.

As PCA Chair, Donna has been an exemplary leader, kind, innovative, inclusive and hard working. We will miss her very much but look forward to staying friends for a long time to come.

Volunteers assisted the Junior School with Carnaval activities, including tubing, hot chocolate, beavertails and horse and buggy rides.

Our boarding students were treated to hand-made dumplings by our Chinese mums at the Lunar Festival dinner, made possible by donations by the day and boarding families alike.

Parents gave our hard-working Junior School faculty a break by covering their lunch tables twice this year, organized by the Staff Appreciation Committee.

The Staff Appreciation Committee set the morning tables as a big thank you to our Aramark food service staff.

CELEBRATING PAST GOLF TOURNAMENT CHAIRS Recognized as “PUMA STARS” were the golf tournament chairs over the last 20 years: Paul Clubbe ’61, Kevin Desforges, Claude Gautier, Steven Gruhl, Grant Lawson, Graeme Montgomery, Margo Starr, and Mitchell Stevenson.

TWENTY YEARS OF FRIENDSHIP AND FUNDRAISING Along with the usual PC camaraderie, we celebrated 20 years of friendship and fundraising. In 2000, past parents Claude Gautier and Grant Lawson led a group of parents and staff through planning for the first Tournament.

Thank you to the 1999-2000 Co-Chairs Claude and Grant, members of the Golf Tournament committee, and Jane Lynes, Director of Alumni & Parent Relations (1996-2007) for their vision and leadership. Over the years this event has raised funds for a new Zamboni, arena renovations, kitchen equipment, and the rejuvenation of Memorial Field and track.

ADAM FLOYD: FOSTER ’46 AWARD RECIPIENT Congratulations to active committee member, donor, sponsor and alumni-parent Adam Floyd, recipient of this year’s Foster ’46 award. Adam has been a driving force for over a decade, inspiring the committee with thoughtful feedback and innovative ideas that have kept the event fresh and engaging.

His enthusiasm and leadership have been key to increasing registration, enlisting sponsorship, securing auction items and raising the profile of the tournament. The award is named in honour of the late Bruce Foster ’46, a golf enthusiast and a passionate supporter of Pickering College.

Jim maintained his strong ties to the school throughout his life, demonstrating an abiding sense of loyalty and gratitude to PC, along with a dedication to educational excellence. His legacy includes generous support for capital projects such as the 40s Student Lounge, as well as establishment of our largest endowment, in support of the Spring Family Scholars.
