THE 2015 TIME-BASED ART FESTIVAL Portland Institute for Contemporary Art presents the 13th annual Time-Based Art (TBA) Festival, September 10 – 20, 2015, featuring a fresh new wave of art in real time from a lineup of performing and visual artists hailing from all over the world including Italy, Tunisia, Japan, Norway, France, and across the US. TBA:15 hand delivers ten days of live performances, music, workshops, talks, and a month of visual art installations in unexpected spaces—activating the city of Portland with the art of our time. PICA continues its year of 20th Anniversary festivities at TBA:15 with a few limited edition events (hint: pull out your old flannels, Lugz, and mood rings and get ready to party like it’s 1995)!

Since 1995, PICA has championed the practice of contemporary artists from around the world, driving vital conversations about the art and issues of today. PICA presents artists from visual and performing art backgrounds and embraces those individuals who exist at the borders of media and ideas. Through artist residencies and exhibitions, lectures and workshops, and the annual Time–Based Art Festival, PICA constructs a broad platform for contemporary art.

A NOTE FROM ANGELA MATTOX, PICA ARTISTIC DIRECTOR Welcome to the 13th edition of PICA’s Time-Based Art Festival!

TBA is an annual ritual—a community gathering in the name of art and ideas, imagination, and fearless expression. TBA creates a public intervention to disrupt the mundane and complacent. It is designed to provoke response and participation, and to create new possibilities for exchange. From performance art exploring body politics and racial stereotypes, to improvisational sound art from Japanese elders, to experimental storytelling, durational folk dance, and visual installations, TBA:15 features artists exploring a variety of forms of expression rarely seen in the same context.

TBA:15 performances open with a culturally timely ceremony at Trinity Episcopal Cathedral that embodies many of the values of this year’s Festival: perseverance, transmission, and community action. Holcombe Waller’s Requiem Mass: LGBT ⁄ Working Title is a work that brings together a chorus of voices honoring those persecuted in the name of religion.

Another cornerstone project, FOLK–S, Will you still love me tomorrow?, is a poetic transmission created by Italian artist Alessandro Sciarroni, who resurrects a culturally-specific dance and makes a pact with the audience to share time and space until no one remains.

Many of the artists in this year’s Festival are exploring and confronting our socio-political moment. With the recent political and social unrest in Ukraine, DakhaBrakha proudly perseveres through the force of music.

Local performance artist keyon gaskin creates a defiant performance piece that resonates with current issues of identity and inequity.

To many, TBA is synonymous with the unexpected and the unconventional, and this year’s edition will bring extraordinary experiences—whether you venture into the forest at dusk with NIGHT TRIPPER, envelop your senses in the cooking performance ritual of Tunisian /French choreographer Radhouane el Meddeb, or join an urban walking tour as we re-discover our changing Portland landscape through Festival memories. Requiem Mass: LGBT ⁄ Working Title

Holcombe Waller’s Requiem Mass: LGBT / Working Title is a large-scale ceremonial choral work that deeply explores contemporary faith, advocacy through art, and collective catharsis. Performed in historic Trinity Episcopal Cathedral with an all-abilities community choir drawn from all walks of life towards the project’s mission, Requiem Mass is an emotional and personal work invoking remembrance and peace for the dead who have suffered persecution for their sexual orientation or gender expression. Requiem Mass was additionally informed by research into the pivotal gay history from the 1980s through present day and by community engagement that has included working with experts in liturgical music, queer theory, and faith-based equality initiatives as well as over 100 participants in a series of choral workshops with Waller over the past year.

Holcombe Waller is one of America’s most distinct voices in music theater. He is a 2011 United States Artists Berresford Fellow in Music, an award which noted his mournful, folk-inflected style, and his approach to music “as total theater.” He is a Creative Capital artist, a recipient of the MAP Fund Award, and a 2013 Joan Shipley Fellow of the Regional Arts and Culture Council.

Waller has been presented and commissioned by numerous theaters, arts institutions, and festivals.

FOLK–S Will you still love me tomorrow?

Lauded Italian choreographer and theatre director Alessandro Sciarroni is known for his stagings that straddle dance, performance art, and ritual anthropology. In FOLK-S, the Schuhplatter, a Bavarian folk dance, meaning “shoe batter,” is refined to its most essential form invoking a sense of playful experimentation and ritualized trance. Starting from an unceasing repeated sequence, the performance space becomes redefined, shifts, and the company transforms itself like ever-changing organic matter. FOLK-S invites us to take part in an extreme, perception-based experience centering on the multiple variations that a form can take to the point of exhaustion. Through repetition, the folk material finds its clearest revelation by being geographically and culturally decontextualized. The folk and the popular wrestle until they fuse with the contemporary context.

Alessandro Sciarroni is an Italian performing artist with an extensive background in visual art and theater. His works are featured in dance and theatre festivals, museums, art galleries, and in unconventional spaces. His work tries to uncover obsessions, fears, and fragilities through the repetition of a practice to the limits of physical endurance. Sciarroni collaborates with a wide range of artists and his works have been performed in 21 European countries, Canada, Brazil, Uruguay, and the United Arab Emirates including the Biennale de la Danse in Lyon, Kunstenfestivaldesarts in Brussels, Impulstanz Festival in Wien, the Venice Biennale, and the Festival Séquence Danse at 104 in Paris, Juli Dans Festival in Amsterdam, the Centre Pompidou in Paris, and the MAXXI Museum in Rome.

Okwui Okpokwasili is a New York-based writer, performer, and choreographer who has worked with Ralph Lemon, Julie Taymor, Nora Chipaumire, Young Jean Lee, Richard Maxwell, Dean Moss, and others. Bronx Gothic is a collaboration with visual designer, filmmaker, and director Peter Born. Okpokwasili has been a MANCC Choreographic Fellow, a Foundation for Contemporary Arts grantee, an Artist in Residence at Baryshnikov Arts Center and The Park Avenue Armory, and a is currently an inaugural artist in LMCC’s Extended Life Program.

The North American 15-16 Tour of Bronx Gothic is produced by MAPP International Productions. Bronx Gothic was co-commissioned by Performance Space 122, Danspace Project, Lower Manhattan Cultural Council (LMCC), the Jerome Foundation with residency support from Park Avenue Armory’s “Under Construction” Series, New York Live Arts, Baryshnikov Arts Center, and LMCC’s Extended Life Dance Development program. A solo creation at the intersection of theater, dance, and visual art installation, Bronx Gothic gives palpable force to the charged relationship between two girls on the verge of adolescence in the 1980s—where Newports are bought in singles at corner bodega, and sex saturated notes are passed in class. In a performance of psychic and physical collisions that threaten to break the body, we have an unflinching look into the exquisite turbulence of one woman’s memory. Created in collaboration with designer/director Peter Born, Bronx Gothic draws inspiration from Victorian-era novels and West African griot storytelling to reveal an honest, dark, and powerful tale of sexual awakening.

Get a glimpse of the Portland dance scene in this afternoon of two works by local choreographers.

Luke Gutgsell’s The Self Possessed presents two gay men working to integrate their shared identity to invoke quasi-mystical states of transcendence. Slipping in and out of gendered states to the beat of ’80s house and pop diva hymns, they exorcise demons of mainstream media and crumble each others’ defenses with humor and kindness to destabilize dominant mores of normalcy.

In Leading Light (a work-in-progress), choreographer Suniti Dernovsek works with musician Holland Andrews to create a haunting reflection on personal stories and the performer’s role in expressing an ideal versus what is flawed. Intricately detailed choreography and an original sound score blend to create a distinctly stylized and powerful experience.

Luke Gutgsell studied dance at The Ohio State University, Naropa University, and the Merce Cunningham Studio. He has performed at home and abroad with Risa Jaroslow, Tiffany Mills Company, and David Dorfman Dance. His work has been seen in New York City, the Pacific Northwest, and Mexico.

Suniti Dernovsek is a choreographer, performer, and movement educator. For years she collaborated with visual artist David Stein directing the dance company, bobbevy. Together they have created over 25 works. Dernovsek has been presented by Reed College Arts Week, Danceworks, On the Boards, and Danspace among others. Dernovsek has received the Dance New Work Award and several grants from the Regional Arts & Culture Council.

TIMe is a multimedia performance that smartly utilizes Cold War archival documents, 3D laser scans, Henryk Gorecki’s 3rd Symphony, and the revelations of Edward Snowden to trace the constant shifting of memory over time and the archives we keep.

Based on Jan’s father, an enigmatic Cold War operative and privacyobsessed skeptic, TIMe resonates with personal storytelling and timely issues around privacy. Jan packs TIMe with a brilliant set of collaborators that include Pablo N. Molina, Nathan Ruyle, Chris Kuhl, Sonny Valicenti, composer and vocalist Mariana Sadovska, and Obie-winner Andrew Schneider, among others.

Portland-based Lucy Yim brings to TBA:15 a solo work of mourning and melancholia. From here they depart, measuring the distance within body, thought, language, and feeling; as portal / continent / object / subject / memory / tool. Actions of voice, sound, and movement turn the internalized outward. This is not my body performing but where my body has gone suspended in a place where a question repeats.

Lucy Yim creates work from her interests in politics, language, and the mechanics of memory. Yim’s investigation is culled from a combination of experimental art, poetry, and somatic dance practices. Her creative process, founded in writing and improvisation, leads to metaphors and ideas performed as actions. Past collaborators include Enrico D. Wey, Jin Camou, Jesse Mejía, and Physical Education (Takahiro Yamamoto, Allie Hankins, and keyon gaskin). Braxton has been writing and performing music under his own name and collaboratively since the mid-1990s. He is the former front man of experimental rock band the Battles, whose debut album Mirrored was both a critical and commercial success.

Since departing Battles in 2010, Braxton has focused on composing music for HIVE, as well as composing commissioned pieces for ensembles such as The Bang on a Can All Stars, Kronos Quartet, Alarm Will Sound, and Brooklyn Rider. In 2012, he collaborated with Philip Glass during the ATP I’ll Be Your Mirror festival. He has also performed his orchestral work Central Market with the Los Angeles Philharmonic, London Sinfonietta, BBC Symphony Orchestra, and New York’s Wordless Music Orchestra. Tyondai Braxton is known for experimenting with music in a way that feels like a game of coloring outside the lines—tracing patterns that unexpectedly jet sideways. Braxton brings to TBA:15 a solo performance featuring modular synthesizer and samples. Braxton will be performing pieces from HIVE1 his first album in six years and his Nonesuch Records debut.

Sound artist Akio Suzuki has been performing, building instruments, and presenting sound installations for four decades. His music is simple and pure. Suzuki explores how natural atmospheres and sounds can be harnessed and then set free. Suzuki performs on a wide range of self-made instruments and has collaborated with artists such as Toru Takemitsu, Takehisa Kosugi, Derek Bailey, Peter Brötzmann, Steve Lacy, and John Butcher.

Born in Japan and living in New York, Aki Onda is an electronic musician, composer, and visual artist. He is particularly known for his “Cassette Memories” works compiled from a sound diary collected over more than two decades. Onda’s favored instrument for recording and sound manipulation is the cassette Walkman. He often collaborates with filmmakers and visual artists including Ken Jacobs, Michael Snow, Alan Licht, Akio Suzuki, and Raha Raissnia.

At 7, Michelle Ellsworth told her mother “I want to be a dancer”, after watching the Ernest Flat Dancers on the Carol Burnett Show. Ellsworth’s career includes a wide range of eveninglength solos, short works, videos, and performative websites.

Starting from her native medium of dance, she works within video, text, web design, and installation to pursue topics ranging from gender to the human condition. Among her honors are a Doris Duke Impact Award (2015), a NEFA National Dance Project Grant (2014), and multiple NPN Creation Fund Grants. She is an Associate Professor at the University of Colorado Boulder and is working on a 7-inch recording with drummer Sean Meehan.

French-Tunisian Choreographer Radhouane El Meddeb carefully observed his mother and his aunts preparing couscous and the national dishes served at his family’s gatherings from marriages to circumcisions to mourning rituals… In Je danse et vous en donne à bouffer, El Meddeb expresses his love of preparation, and the sensuality of food in a form of sacredness and performative sharing. In this performance, El Meddeb is immersed in his loves of dancing and cooking. Seated before his couscous maker, he performs and prepares couscous with generosity and poetry.

Philippe Quesne received his education in Visual Art. He designs sets for theater, opera, exhibitions, and creates performative interventions. Quesne’s theatre work hunts the marvelous and highlights the relationship between mankind and nature.

He creates brilliant larger than life scenography that is used as an ecosystem where he immerses actors and puts small communities under a microscope. In 2003, he created the Vivarium Studio Company. Jibz Cameron is a performance/video artist and actor living in Los Angeles. Her work as alter ego Dynasty Handbag has been presented at international dives both great and small.

She has been heralded by The New Yorker as “outrageously smart, grotesque, and innovative”. She has produced video works and two albums of original music. She also acts in work by avant-garde theater groups and in comedic web series that remain unpopular. Cameron works as a professor and lecturer of performance and comedy. Her third evening-length performance Soggy Glasses premiered at BAM’s Next Wave Festival in 2014.

She recently moved from New York to LA and is in development on a television series about a performance artist that moves from New York to LA. Presented in partnership with Disjecta.

Ingri Midgard Fiksdal is a Norwegian choreographer and performer.

She has an MA in Choreography from Oslo National Academy of the Arts. Her work tours internationally, including brut-Wien (AUS), Kampnagel (DE), In Between Time (UK), ANTI festival (FI), The Armory Show (US), and Homo Novus Festival (LT). Fiksdal is currently pursuing a PhD. Ingvild Langgård is a composer, musician, and artist who studied sound art at the Academy of Fine Art, Oslo. She works in multimedia, music, and has a music-based project titled Phaedra. Langgård has been awarded several grants, her work is shown nationally/internationally, she works as a curator, and co-founded the gallery Rekord.

Signe Becker is a scenographer and artist. She studied scenography at the Norwegian Theatre Academy in Fredrikstad, and has a Master’s Degree in visual culture from Oslo National Academy of the Arts.

Her work includes theatre, dance, installation, and video work. She is a scenographer at Verk Produksjoner and curates a monthly art event at Black Box Theatre in Oslo.

One day while sitting in the living room of my childhood home, I asked my dad, “What is spirit?” to which he replied, “Spirit is creativity.” He said that we love to anthropomorphize the more slippery concepts (the incorporeal, the imagined, the spiritual, the unproven) by assigning them image or form (fire, dove, voice in the cloud, person…) but those tactics of understanding were like throwing a sheet over a ghost, only necessary if you don’t believe in the ghost. This ghost is the thing inside us that drives us to realize thought. It is society. It is art. It is belief. Pictures of the moon with teeth is an exhibition made up of projects by artists whose work asks “what do we believe in”, or perhaps “what is spirit?” In this way, their work lives at the intersections of belief and disbelief and this is where we will meet them.

In their lack of narrative outlines and prosaic structure, they appear almost more potent than they would be as long-form formal works. “I do not believe that this performance will put people into a transcendental state. We would need much more time together to accomplish this. So, what to do in the meantime?” — MPA Nothing to You is a temporary site-specific installation that will act as a frame for an encounter. MPA will direct an action that tours the perimeters of thoughtful collision between bodies, objects and sound within the space. Here, speakers mature into characters, and bodies regress into objects, calling into question the notion of pre-tense, the state of being before action, during approximately 45 minutes of provocative and attentive collapse.

Fresh off the release of their latest album Wig Out at Jagbags, Stephen Malkmus & the Jicks are veteran Portland-based musicians Joanna Bolme (bass, vocals), Mike Clark (keyboards), Jake Morris (drums), and frontman Stephen Malkmus. Together since 2000, Stephen Malkmus & the Jicks have created six albums. Before the Jicks, Malkmus was the lead force behind the iconic 1990s band Pavement, Bolme came out of influential Portland bands like Quasi and the Minders, Morris played drums for the Joggers, and Mike Clark played for Portland bands like the No-No’s and the Maroons.

Live Riot is a band with roots in Riot Grrrl and the Pacific Northwest that recreates classic Riot Grrrl hits. Dana Bishop-Root, Ginger Brooks Takahashi, Deirdre Logue, and Allyson Mitchell will present live performance and karaoke style videos that include the audience in the riotousness of the show. Live Riot pulls into focus the politics that arise when revisiting these fearless and danceable songs. Following the show, Ginger will DJ the night away as you dance it out. Singing, we must rage!

The artists in Live Riot are connected to Riot Grrrl, the Pacific Northwest, General Sisters, The Feminist Art Gallery, and the Alien She exhibition on view at Pacific Northwest College of Art and the Museum of Contemporary Craft. Alien She, curated by Astria Suparak and Ceci Moss, is the first exhibition to examine the lasting impact of Riot Grrrl on artists and cultural producers working today.

TBA favorite Ten Tiny Dances (TTD) returns! An experiment in confined space, TTD is dedicated to fostering inventive dance / p erformance art and providing an exhilarating performance experience for a diverse audience, all on a 4×4–foot stage. Since 2002, the small stage of TTD has been the crucible for an ever expanding catalogue of creation and performance: Over 300 artists, 24 engaging venues, and 9 cities across the country. What began as a playful and simple idea has become one of the Northwest’s most popular performance series. This 37th edition of TTD features a program of new work by artists including Subashini Ganesan, 11: Dance Co., Keith Hennessy, Michelle Ellsworth, Amy O’Neal, and sub.set dance.

Produced by Portland choreographer Mike Barber, TTD challenges artists to collapse known vocabulary as well as to make new material that responds to the possibilities of the space. Freed from the pressure of infinite possibility though the constraint of the stage, the artists of TTD continue to rise to the challenge and opportunity of 16 square feet.

Jenny Yang is a Los Angeles-based writer and stand up comedian featured in Buzzfeed videos and on Showtime. Yang has been dubbed one of Los Angeles’ “most fascinating people”, 2015 in LA Weekly’s annual “People” issue. D’Lo is an internationally-presented queer transgender Tamil Sri L.A.nkan-American, political theatre artist/writer, director, comedian, and music producer based in Los Angeles, California. He is featured on critically-acclaimed HBO, Amazon Studios, and Netflix series. Bri Pruett is a stand-up comic and improviser from Portland, Oregon named one of the Funniest 5 Comedians in Portland by Willamette Week.

BEACON SOUND brings an experimental night of music featuring performances by Benoit Pioulard, Bardo:Basho, and Apartment Fox. Together these artists, occupy a different yet complimentary place near the nexus of experimental, electronic, and ambient music.

Seattle-based Bardo:Basho creates hypnotic loops using software synths, samples, field recordings, and vocals to create pastoral medieval sounding textures. Apartment Fox began as the drummer of anarcho-art-punk band, The Intima. He has emerged as one of Cascadia’s top techno producers. Collaborator Patricia Hall (Soft Metals) will join him. Benoit Pioulard is fascinated by natural sounds and the textures of decay. He creates singular sonic environments by combining remnants of pop structures with lush field recordings. Beacon Sound is a record store and label based in N. Portland dedicated to connecting the sometimes disparate dots of contemporary music across genres and geographies. It is a gathering place and source for inventive modes of production.

DJ Klyph curates a night of hip hop featuring some of Portland’s finest including veteran MC Vursatyl of the legendary Lifesavas movement, hip hop/soul duo Neka & Kahlo, St. John’s MC Mic Capes of The Resistance, and MC/Producer Theory Hazit.

DJ Klyph has been bringing the very best to the airwaves since ’09.

A fan of conscious hip hop, funk, and soul with a lean towards the golden era east coast sound, Klyph utilizes multimedia platforms to impact community consciousness. Mic Capes is a hip hop artist that represents the North Portland neighborhood of St. Johns.

Capes is known for vivid story telling, raw lyricism, and thought provoking social commentary as key components. Neka & Kahlo met by chance in 2009. Neka, brought up in the Black Church, took to secular music in secret. Daughter of eastern European emigrants, Kahlo took to hip-hop for self-expression. In the duo’s headphones you can find anything from Michael to Miguel, Chaka Khan to Kanye, ’60s acid rock to Chance the Rapper.

Portland’s own Strategy will be performing his acclaimed 2015 album Noise Tape Full which “implants dub’s DNA in a whole new host” according to Pitchfork. FREQUENTLY ASKED QUESTIONS WHERE IS THE BOX OFFICE? The TBA Central Box Office is located at PICA, 415 SW 10th Ave, Suite 300.

IS THERE A SERVICE CHARGE ON TICKETS & PASSES? The per-ticket and per-pass service fees are collected on all credit card orders taken online, by phone, and in-person.

CAN I SHARE MY FESTIVAL PASS? Passes are non-transferable. Your name will be written on your pass and you will be required to show ID with your pass upon entering each venue.

CAN I GET A REFUND OR EXCHANGE MY TICKET? All ticket and pass sales are final.

There are no refunds or exchanges.

WHAT IF I AM LATE TO THE SHOW? As a general rule, there is no late seating. All shows will start promptly as listed. You must check in no later than 15 minutes before curtain to ensure seating, even if you have a pass or pre-purchased individual ticket. At 15 minutes prior to curtain any unclaimed seats will be opened up for individual ticket sales.

WHAT IF I FORGET MY PASS? Check in at the venue’s ticketing table and a representative will assist you.

WHAT IF I LOSE MY PASS? Contact PICA immediately and we will assist you in reissuing your pass.

IF I BUY A TICKET, DOES MY CHILD GET IN FOR FREE? Sure, if they can sit on your lap.

Otherwise you will need to purchase an additional ticket. Additionally, while we welcome children and babies, please note that if there is any disturbance to the live performance, we may have to ask you to please wait in the lobby.

CAN I BRING MY FAMILY? WHAT SHOWS ARE APPROPRIATE FOR CHILDREN? PICA supports artist freedom of speech and audiences’ right to choose what to see and hear. Due to the nature of live performance, we cannot prescreen all works for content. Young people are welcome at all shows that are not 21+ only at their parents’ discretion. If you have specific concerns or questions, our box office staff can offer suggestions on shows.

For 20 years every major PICA project, every TBA Festival, rested on the broad shoulders of an extraordinary man. TC Smith provided technical support, the light and sound, but he also supported PICA with the sweat of his brow and the unwavering generosity of his huge heart. This Festival marks the first without him. He was a big man who was inspired by the big idea, and he was selfless in allowing us to bring the biggest of our ideas to you. He was a philosophy put into practice. His cell phone number was the equivalent of a kind of 911 ART HELP, the number to call when the impossible needed to be made possible. TC held the keys to the city—and nearly every venue and equipment warehouse in town. He will be dearly missed by all his friends, and by hundreds of people he never met who are indebted to his passionate vision.
