What should one do when things haven’t worked out as one might have hoped? In an abstract and often spiritual reflection, CALIFORNIA attempts to make sense of those situations that, in reality, fail to conform to the projection of fantasy.

Throughout history, the state of California has been accorded a special role within the American imagination as a symbol of freedom and promise, i.e. the gold rush, the emergence of San Francisco as a sort of gay Mecca and the dot.com revolution.

These phenomena come with complex, unanticipated problems which provide the fodder for John Jasperse’s most recent work, CALIFORNIA, performed by five dancers with a commissioned score by Jonathan Bepler and set design by Ammar Eloueini.*

John Jasperse has been living and working in New York City since graduating from Sarah Lawrence College in 1985. His numerous recognitions include an award from The Foundation for Contemporary Performance Arts, a Bessie Award, the Doris Duke Award and three prizes in the 1996 Rencontres Internationales Chorégraphiques de Bagnolet.

Her latest work, DEFIXIONES: Will & Testament, a piece written for solo voice, piano and tape, is an angry meditation on the mass genocide of Armenians, Assyrians, Anatolians, Thracians and Pontic Greeks between 1914 and 1923, and the subsequent cooperative political movement, led in large part by Turkey and the U.S., to deny these horrific events. “Defixiones” refers to the warnings engraved in lead that were placed by relatives of the deceased on the graves of the dead in Greece and Asia Minor. These warnings cautioned against moving or desecrating the corpses under the threat of extreme harm. “Will & Testament” refers to the last wishes of the dead who have been taken to their graves under unnatural circumstances.

Concerned with the poet /author living in exile, whether from outside their homeland or within, DEFIXIONES: Will & Testament speaks for individuals forced to live as outlaws, and for those who have to create houses out of rock.

La Serpenta Canta is a song recital recruiting the eclectic sounds of blues, R&B, Motown, southern soul, Country & Western and Galás’ own compositions in her ongoing campaign against forgetting. With songs like James Carr’s deep soul classic Dark End Of The Street, Hank Williams’ I’m So Lonesome I Could Cry and Screaming Jay Hawkins’ I Put A Spell On You bookended with John Lee Hooker’s Burning Hell, La Serpenta Canta is a vocal method of interrogating popular memory. Galás examines each word and note from every angle, reinvesting them with the full weight of meaning and emotion that might have been eroded by familiarity.

Releasing her first recorded work in 1982, Galás’ numerous musical and theatrical works include Plague Mass (1990), Vena Cava (1992), Schrei 27 (1996), and the concerts /recordings of Judgement Day, Concert for the Damned, The Masque of the Red Death (198 -1988), and Malediction and Prayer (1998). Galás is currently working on the composition and commissioning of the opera Nekropolis.

Raised in San Diego, CA, Galás was born to Greek Orthodox parents, who always encouraged her gift for piano. Galás studied a wide range of musical forms, as well as avant-garde theatre, and then moved to Europe where she made her performance debut at the Festival d’Avignon in France in 1979, performing the lead in the opera, Un Jour Comme un Autre, by composer Vinko Globokar.

A dream team of musicians and dancers from India perform in this stunning classical Indian dancetheater production, which revolves around the elephant-faced Hindu deity, Gajamukha (Lord Ganesha). Created by Raman, Gajamukha showcases folk, contemporary and the three classical dance styles from India: Mohini Attam, Kuchipudi and Bharatha Natyam, complete with live instrumental and vocal accompaniment. The live score features original works by India’s leading musicians. Performed in Sanskrit, Tamil and Telugu, with an English explanation provided, this multilingual ballet is a dazzling experience designed for a global audience.

Herbertson and Cobham’s work together encompasses a range of projects and performance events in theatres, outdoor sites, nontheatre venues and festivals. An odyssey through the culture of eBay, get-rich-quick schemes and our brave new part-time /work-from-home economy, Dickson’s newest work is a PowerPoint tutorial designed to unlock the secrets of Internet auction salesmanship as well as investigate how the online economy is changing our socio-political landscape.

Dickson’s alter-ego, AC, empowers rather than defrauds his audience by offering a step-by-step explanation of how to legitimately sell on one’s own. He demystifies the rich history of the auction dating back to the Roman empire, articulates eBay’s corporate success in the face of a general dot.com bust, and documents the paradigm shift from the salary-based economy of yesterday to the self-employed work from home landscape of tomorrow. Audience members are encouraged to bring along an item they’d like to sell.

Choreographer Tahni Holt and painter/ installation artist Marty Schnapf have teamed up with the musicians of Menomena to produce a trilogy that is one part water, one part flour and one part light. Crashing moments of intricate conflicts are buttressed by pure, unmitigated communication in a complex interplay of weight change, and the all-too-prevalent realization that time is running out. In 1957, the relocation of the Brooklyn Dodgers Baseball Club to L.A. meant that one community lost its home team and another lost their homes.

Using a microphone and a newly commissioned musical soundscape, Woodbury explores the continuing reverberations of this upheaval, bringing to life scores of characters, their two cities, and interwoven histories.

Woodbury has forged a unique kind of fiction that combines the immediacy of performance art with the narrative structure of a novel. Her first “living novel,” WHAT EVER: An American Odyssey, started out as an experiment in an East Village bar and later became an eight-part solo performance, featured on PRI’s This American Life and now published as a novel by Faber/Farrar, Straus & Giroux. Brazilian choreographers Rosane Chamecki and Andrea Lerner create scenic landscapes and expose hidden phantoms and vulnerabilities in a stunning exploration of the transformative and empowering nature of fear. ChameckiLerner’s work has been presented throughout the U.S., Brazil, Germany, Finland, Denmark, Venezuela, Colombia, Costa Rica, El Salvador, Portugal, The Netherlands, Austria and Canada. In 2003, they became the curators/ artistic directors of Casa Hoffmann, a center for movement studies in Curitiba, Brazil, where artists, critics, scholars and curators exchange ideas with the local community.

In 1960, Deborah Hay became part of the Judson Dance Theater. Since the mid-nineties she has focused almost exclusively on the choreography of solo dances. Hay was commissioned to choreograph a duet for herself and Mikhail Baryshnikov through his White Oak Dance Project; has received a Guggenheim Fellowship in choreography, numerous NEA Choreography Fellowships and the Rockefeller Foundation Bellagio Fellowship. In 2002, she was inducted into the first Hall of Fame for the Arts in Austin, Texas. Her books include Moving Through the Universe in Bare Feet, Lamb at the Altar: The Story of a Dance, and My Body, the Buddhist.

Khaela Maricich leads a multi-media presentation about the innovative and new mental health care techniques offered by Swiss company Remôsch.

Using personalized prescriptions of identity-based daily karaoke and dance routines, the Remôsch system is highly successful at helping individuals “stay in the game” and avoid the murky areas of mental illness /difficulty. Using video and live web conferences with the employees of the Bay area based company, Maricich illustrates the uses of this new technology, and shows the greater possibilities for living which Remôsch can offer.

Heralded as the “Nijinsky of Butoh,” Kasai transcends temporal distinctions in a journey through cultures, epochs and states of being. Kasai begins the performance in a woman’s kabuki costume, and appears to perform a traditional Japanese dance although it is completely improvised.

Gradually, Kasai is transformed into a street dancer, a solitary actor and a contemporary traveler. Here, on the outer boundaries of “un-self consciousness,” change is the only constant as butoh morphs into hip-hop.

Akira Kasai studied modern dance and classical ballet until meeting Kazuo Ohno in 1963. Kasai then spent the next two decades studying and dancing with Ohno and Tatsumi Hijikata, the founders of butoh. In 1971, he founded Tenshi-Kan, an institute for butoh and esoteric studies in Tokyo. In 1979, Kasai stopped dancing, disbanded his company and school and left for Stuttgart, Germany to study the principles of eurythmy. After graduating from the Eurythmeum in 1983, Kasai returned to Japan in and began to create a highly individual style, which he debuted in 1994 with the work, Seraphita. Since 1999, he has been choreographing Blue Sky Series, an all-female company. His work has toured internationally, including Germany, Korea, Italy, San Francisco and Chicago.

Homer Avila, a world-renowned dancer and choreographer, continued to perform after losing his leg and hip to chondro sarcoma, a rare form of cancer, in 2001. Avila created and commissioned dances specific to his altered physicality, illuminating implicit contradictions in the way bodies are traditionally viewed as abled or disabled, normal or abnormal. He was scheduled to be a part of the 2004 TBA Festival, and was dancing and performing up until two days before his death on April 25, 2004.

Avila was a valued colleague, performer and friend, and his presence will be missed.

ZOE BELOFF Psychic Projections —3D Film Performances

New York based film and media artist Zoe Beloff uses both digital and archaic film trickery to conjure up phantasmagorical worlds where mediums conjure up spirits, calling shadowy beings into reality. Drawing from cinema history, psychoanalytical studies and 19th century accounts of séances and mediums, Beloff’s multi-media works create a dialog between technology, history and the unconscious.

For her first Portland appearance, Beloff will present two different programs of work. The first show features Shadow Land or Light from the Other Side and Lost. Shadow Land is stereoscopic, 16mm film that is drawn from the 1897 autobiography of Elizabeth d’Espérance, a materializing medium who could produce full body apparitions. Lost is a piece for stereo 35mm slides, hand-cranked 16mm projection and phonograph that recreates forgotten spaces from New York’s Lower East Side.

Joanie 4 Jackie is an independent distribution network and archive for women who make movies.

It was started in Portland in 1995 by performing artist and moviemaker Miranda July. In 2004 July handed Joanie 4 Jackie over to the Bard College Film Department where a rotating group of students and faculty are dedicated to keeping it alive and kicking.

Guy Maddin’s signature homages to silent cinema (The Saddest Music in the World, Careful, Dracula, Pages from a Virgin’s Diary) take a twisted, fauxautobiographical turn in this roiling, sexually perverse melodrama about entrapment, obsession, love and revenge. First presented as a 10-part peep show installation at the Rotterdam Film Festival, Maddin has fashioned his lurid vignettes into a delirious, voyueristic mini-feature, in which he, casting himself (played by Darcy Fehr) as a lascivious hockey player, falls under the spell of irrational mother and daughter femmes fatales.

Hoberman in The Village Voice, Lewis Klahr is often placed into the lineage of collage filmmakers such as Harry Smith, Larry Jordan and Stan Vanderbeek. But Klahr’s films are much more closely influenced by his affinity for classic Hollywood, specifically the melodramas of Douglas Sirk and Vincente Minnelli.

MK Guth’s Red Shoe Delivery Service reconfigures the idea of Dorothy’s ruby slippers in order to create an interactive art experience while providing people with practical service. Dubbed “art that moves you,” RSDS is made up of a mini van, a driver, a videographer, a photographer and an arsenal of glittering red shoes. Passengers are asked to don a pair of the shoes, click their heels and state: “there is no place like…” at which point they are transported to their desired destinations. Multimedia documentation of this magic ride results in a work that reflects the collaboration between artist and every participant.

Known as “Portland’s Best Fake Professor,” Amos Latteier blends biology, sociology and technology to design a series of audio tours of Portland wildlife. David Eckard’s Podium transforms the artist into a transient town crier, as he pushes his elaborately designed roving podium to deliver poetic monologues. Navigating public spaces in the city with the goal of maintaining the performance for a “forty hour work week,” Eckard explores physicality and monotonous feats of endurance and futility.

The audience becomes witness to both the proclamation and the labored action of transporting, assembling and disassembling the sculptural podium. Utilizing the traditions of rally proclamation and stump speech, the spoken words will be a collage of personal revelations, facts, poetry and aural non-sequiturs. The monologue will remain the same, but will shift in meaning and impact as it engages and interrupts the city by creating incidental audiences.

Gregg Whelan and Gary Winters of public art collaborative lone twin create a series of sitespecific works which attempt a meeting between the liquidity that constitutes 80% of our body’s physicality and the network of waterways that give shape to Portland’s human geography. This performance attempts to “become the weather” by inserting itself into the hydrological cycle and literally producing clouds. Built from work songs, square dances and old jokes, the piece laughs at cold winds and smiles in the face of driving rain.

Ammar Eloueini (born in Lebanon) is a registered architect who established Digit-all Studio in 1997, based in Chicago and Paris, as an architectural laboratory. Digit-all Studio’s projects challenge traditional design processes and answer new architectural and urban complexities. In 2001, Eloueini was awarded the prestigious Nouveaux Albums des Jeunes Architectes, the French Institute of Architects’ highest recognition for architects under thirty-five. Eloueini designed the exhibition Skin Tight at the Museum of Contemporary Art in Chicago that opened in June 2004. His designs have been featured in solo and group exhibits and published worldwide. In Chicago, Ammar Eloueini chairs the Digital Media Program and teaches design studio at the University of Illinois at Chicago, as well as collaborating with Archeworks design laboratory.

He received, with honors, the degree of Diplômé par le Gouvernement from Paris-Villemin in 1994, and graduated with a Master of Science in Advanced Architectural Design from Columbia University in 1996. Eloueini has participated in several symposia, including “Mixing It Up With Mies” at the Canadian Center for Architecture and the International Symposium in Electronic Art.

British duo lone twin present a performative presentation and lecture drawing on the recurring theme of walking as a central activity in their practice. Montreal choreographer Édouard Lock is famed for his explosive style and has earned an international reputation with his company La La La Human Steps. Faced with the increasing challenges of touring in the U.S., Lock reinvented his masterwork, Amelia, as a film combining choreographic, musical and cinematic strands. The original score, written

by David Lang for violin, cello, piano and voice, brings evocative minimalism to lyrics from five of Lou Reed’s works for the Velvet Underground. The result is formal, street-wise and haunting.

Born in March 1954 in Casablanca, Lock emigrated to Montréal at the age of three. In 1971, he joined Groupe de la Place Royale. At the age of 21, he created his first works for Groupe Nouvelle Aire. He founded Lock-Danseurs in 1980, which later became La La La Human Steps. His works have been presented at the American Theatre Lab, London’s Institute of Contemporary Arts, the Paris Opera, The Kitchen, Dance Theatre Workshop and the Brooklyn Academy of Music. Lock has received the Jean A. Chalmers prize for choreography, The Bessie Award and the DenisePelletier Prize, has choreographed for David Bowie and Louise Lecavalier and has collaborated with video artist Nam June Paik, Frank Zappa and Einstürzende Neubauten.

Offering a rare view of Romanian contemporary dance, Manolescu presents Dance.Ro, a video compilation of excerpts from several choreographers and dance companies. The video presentation is accompanied by a live performance including short works by Adrian Stoian, Marie-Gabrielle Rotie and Cosmin Manolescu. An open discussion with the audience will follow.

Dance.Ro was produced in 2002 by Project DCM Foundation and Cosmin Manolescu and is the first survey of Romanian dance to be presented at festivals in Berlin, Düsseldorf, Philadelphia and Bucharest.

Cosmin Manolescu is a choreographer, performer and dance manager living and working in Bucharest, Romania. Since 1997 he has been involved in the development of contemporary dance in Romania and in the Balkans through workshops, co-productions, residencies, dance platforms and international exchange projects.

Manolescu is the founder and artistic director of “BucharEast.West,” an international dance festival in Bucharest. His artistic work has toured internationally in Italy, Austria, France, Lebanon, Portugal and the United States.

Jay’s creative works have appeared in various museum exhibitions around the world and his book, Soul of the Game received the Gold Medal at the 1997 Leipzig Book Fair and was named one of the “14 Most Beautiful Books in the World” by the Copenhagen Museum. Rhodessa Jones is Co-Artistic Director of the acclaimed San Francisco performance company Cultural Odyssey. She is an actress, teacher, singer and writer. Jones is also the Founder and Director of the award winning “Medea Project: Theater for Incarcerated Women,” which is a performance workshop that is designed to achieve personal and social transformation with incarcerated women.

In the spring of 2004, Jones was honored with an Honorary Doctorate from California College of the Arts. In February 2004, Jones was Visiting Artist in Residence at Stanford University/ Institute for Diversity in the Arts. Also in February 2004, Jones played the role of “Ruby” in August Wilson’s King Hedley II at the Lorraine Hansberry Theater. In November 2003, she was presented with a “GOLDIE Lifetime Achievement Award” presented by the San Francisco Bay Guardian. In May 2003, Ms. Jones was awarded a Non-Profit Arts Excellence Award by the San Francisco Business Arts Council. In June, Jones received an Otto Rene Castillo Award for Political Theater.

Founded by guitarist Greg Tate, Burnt Sugar (The Arkestra Chamber) consists of twenty multi-ethnic master musicians who weave an electric, funky sound and, in the process, evoke a sense of both irresistible chaos and sustained order. How do I purchase Festival Passes?

Passes and tickets to special events during TBA can be purchased through PICA directly by calling 503.242.1419 or using the order form on page 152.

Yes, please refer to the order form on page 151.

Why is there a service charge on individual tickets?

This fee covers the services of Artistix, the local ticketing company which operates out of the Portland Center for Performing Arts (PCPA), and is handling individual ticket sales for TBA.

Can I share my Festival Pass?

Passes are non-transferable. Your name will be written on your pass and you will be required to show ID with your pass upon entering each venue.

Can I become a PICA member when purchasing individual tickets?

Absolutely. Remember, if you are paying by check, make it out to PICA to ensure tax deductibility.

What if I am late to the show?

All shows will start promptly as listed. You must check in no later than 15 minutes before curtain to ensure seating, even if you have a pass or a pre-purchased individual ticket. At 15 minutes prior to curtain, any seats reserved for pass holders will be opened up for individual ticket sales.

Does my Festival Pass allow me entrance to festival parties?

Special events, such as the closing night party, are festival fundraisers and require an additional ticket, except for Patron Pass holders. Nightly Cabaret events are free to Festival Pass holders.
