A Legacy is ...
"A legacy is a daughter, sister or granddaughter of a member." Each c h apter must determine if they also want to consider step-daughters, stepsisters and great-granddaughters as legaCies. A legacy brings a rich heritage to our Fraternity through a supportive family and an understanding of Fraternity values. Grand Council believes in the tradition and loyalty legaCies bring to a chapter. They encourage chapters to give special cons ideration to legaCies whose qualities are comparable to those of other rushees. Legacies are given extra credit in the membership selection ranking process. This credit is added to that given for academics. school and community activities , community semce and leadership
However, membership is by mutual selection. As the number of women participating in rush increases on many campuses, so does the number of legacies. From a numbers perspective it is not [or our chapters to pledge each legacy who participates in rush. It is the privilege and responsibility of chapters to select the members who will enhance their chap ter. It is also the privilege of rushees to select the group that is best for them.
Preparing legacies for rush
Alumnae have a respons ibility to educate legacies about the rush experience and about the Greek system. The rushee must feel free to pledge the chapter on her campus where she is most comfortable.

Chapters have the responsibility of following Pi Beta Phi policies on legaCies:
.. The Chapter Membership Chairman shall inform the chapter of all rushees known to be Pi Beta Phi legacies
A legacy shall be invited to at least one invitational round of rush
A legacy who attends a preference party shall be placed on the first bid list.
The chapte r must remember the legacy bri ngs an innate dedication, support and commitment to Pi Phi.
The rushee 's obligation ...
It is the rushee's obligation to enter rush with an open mind, to look at all Greek groups where she may have an affinity a n d to select t h e group that is best for h er.

It would be wonderful if Pi Beta Phi could extend membership to every legacy participating in rush, but that is not realistic Family members and legacies must understand the emotional issues faced during the rush process and not place undue expectations on the rushee or the chapter. The Greek system has many advantages for its members. Those benefits will be best realized when a rushee selects her own group. Knowing a legacy has made the decision that best suits her will bring joy and happiness to all on Bid Day. It is imperative that our chapters know the Pi Phi legaCies going through rush. David Willard
New Director
Following a nationwide search, Arrowmont has named David Willard of the University of Texas at Austin as its new director. David officially began his duties May 1, 2001 replacing Arizona Beta Sandra Blain who returned to full-time teaching at the University of Tennessee , Knoxville . Sandy had served as the school's director for 22 years.
David has more than 25 years experience in visual arts education , university administration, fund raising and comm unity arts leadership. From 1988 to 2001, he was responsible for various administrative functions in the co ll ege of fine arts, at the University of Texas, where he significantly increased philanthropic gifts to the department of art and art history during the university's $1 billion capital campaign.
From 1982-88, prior to m0\1ng to Texas, Da\1d was the curator of education at the Boise Museum of Art in Idaho. At Boise , he conceived, curated, directed and secured ational

Endowment for the Arts funding for a number of exhib itions, including Larry Bell: ewWork(l985); orthwest Furniture Today (1984); and Contemporary Glass: A Decade Apart (1983).
A glass artist who has exhibited his work nationally and internationally , David is represented in the collections of the Coming Museum of Glass in ew York, National Endowment for the Arts in Washington, D.C., the Yamaha Company in Tokyo , the Lobmyer Collection in Vienna and the Dudley Metropolitan Museum in West Midlands, England Educated at Cranbrook Academy of Art in Bloomfield Hills, Michigan and at Tyler School of Art in Philadelphia , David continued his research in ill Lbe late 19705 as a Fulbright Scholar in England FollOwing his year abroad, he was appointed to head the glass program at the University of Wisconsin-Madison.
David has been a community arts advocate throughout his career. In Texas , he served as a peer panelist for the Austin Arts Commission and a juror for the Austin Museum of Art Fine Arts Festival. He was a member of Leadership Austin ' s 1995-96 class and has served on the Austin Chamber of Commerce ' s Business Committee for the Arts and the Downtown Austin Alliance Arts and Entertainment Committee. He currently holds a position on the board of directors of the Texas Association of Schools of Art.
"I'm very pleased to have the opportunity to build on Sandy Blain's considerable accomplishments and lead Arrowmont into the future," David says. "Sa ndy is lea\1ng the school wellpositioned 'A1th a strong curriculum. My immediate focus will be on broad-
ening the existing curriculum, enhancing Arrowmont's national reputation , and increasing the school's visibility internationally. I'm also looking forward to being actively involved in the east Tennessee arts community."
Mary Ann Behlen Hruska , Chairman of the Board of Governors of Arrowmont, said she will be working closely with David to shape th e school's future. "I'm excited about the future of Arrowmont," Mary Ann says. "In many ways , the school is a wellkept secret. David has the background and enthusiasm to help us make our excellent school into the leader in visual arts education."

A True Survivor
When you see June McBrayer, you have to smile. Typically dressed in a work shirt (adorned in pins and a hand decorated name tag) , fun earrings, a colorful hat of some sort and a smile of her own, her presence at Arrowmont is always noticed . Her attitude is consistently one of cheerfulness and delight to be completely immersed in the Arrowmont experience. To many , June has every reason to not smile.
Diagnosed with breast cancer several years ago and still undergoing chemotherapy, June says that
Arrowmont helps give her continued reason to smile . "This place brings me back alive," she says. "People here treat me with courtesy, kindness and interest. "
Typically enrolling in several consecutive weeks of courses during the summer session, June has been exploring various media over the last nine years. Her interests range from wheelthrown clay to polymer clay to papermaking . This yea r was the first opportunity June had to come to Arrowmont in the spring and she was glad she did. Although she was anxious not to get behind with the class work, she was happy to talk about her experiences.

June is quick to point out that as a school teacher for 22 years, she was able to incorporate a lot from Arrowmont in her classrooms. " I snuck in art wherever possible and I wrote grants for the everyday teacher based upon knowledge gained at Arrowmont. "
Not on ly has the schoo l affected her life, but that of her husband 's, as well. Seeing that her husband quietly supported her absence from home so she could participate in classes, June encouraged him to "explore his artistic side." He is now involved in calligraphy classes near their home in Cinci n nat i, Ohio
"Probably my favorite part of Arrowmont is wandering through the [main] gallety taking a different route every time," June says. "You see things from different angles."
Arrowmont's mission statement reads "enriching lives through art. " When asked to cite ready examples of such enrichment, it's easy to point out such programs as ArtReach that ta kes art into the local school, or to the programming targeted to at-risk students. By looking at things from " different angles" June ' s smile is living proof that enrichment manifests itself in many different ways.
Arrowmont proudly hosted an exhibition tided " Resident Artists : The First 10 Years , 1991-2001," a milestone exhibition bringing together the diversity of artists and an fonns instrumental in making Arrowmont 's resident artist program a Significant and positive interface in all educational programming on i ts campus and in our region This exhibition was on display in the Main Gallery from March 1 through May 19 . A closing reception was held on May 19 with a large number of residents in attendance.

200 1-2002 Scholarships & Fellowships Awarded
The Pi Beta Phi Foundation is pleased to announce that 52 women are 2001-02 scholarship and fellowship recipients (does not include Arrowmont scholarships and other local scholarships yet to be awarded) Not only are more awards being granted this year, but some of the awards are larger than they have been in the past This year the Foundation is proud to award the Sign of the Arrow Melissa Scholarship, in the amount of $10,000. This scholarship is the largest Greek scholarship to be awarded based on community service and high academic achievement . Special thanks to the St. Louis Alumnae Club and the Sign of the Arrow shop, for making this outstanding award possible and to the members of the undergraduate scholarship, graduate fellowship and Alumnae Continuing Education (ACE) Scholarship Committees for their participation in the selection process.

Two New Scholarships Endowed
A father and husband endow s c holars hips to honor Pi Phis
The newly-established judy Boucher Chamberlain Art Scho larship will provide an annual scholarship to an undergraduate, art major of the lllinois Theta Chapter of Pi Beta Phi. Virgil Boucher, father ofJudy Boucher Chamberlain , has endowed this scholarship in memory and honor of his daughter. Mr . Boucher' s desire is that his daughter 's love of the arts be permanently honored through the creation of this scholarship.
judy Chamberlain was a member of Illinois Theta at Bradley University where she served the chapter as vice president of moral advancement, vice president of social advancement and as stunt show chairman. In 1961 , judy received the Outstanding Senior ward from the local Pi Beta Phi alumnae club
judy graduated from Bradley University cum laude and was recognized as an honor student each semester. In addition to her Pi Beta Phi activities , judy participated in numerous activities outside the Fraternity and garnered various awards and recognitions as well .
Additionally, the jane Porter Warmack Scholarship will provide an annual scholarship to an undergraduate member of Pi Beta Phi . Ed Warmack has endowed this scholarship to honor his wife , Iowa Gammajane Porter Warmack , on becoming a Golden Arrow
jane Porter Warmack has continually demonstrated her dedication to Pi Beta Phi. As an alumnae member, she has served the Fraternity as a convention delegate, as the Texarkana, Arkansas-Texas Alumnae Club President and as the Sigma Alumnae Province President. Outside the Fratemity, she has served on the Board of Trustees for University of the Ozarks; is a sustaining member of Junior League ; serves as the state Nominating Committee chairman for PEO; is PEO chapter president ; and serves on her local Habitat for Humanity board.
The jane Porter Warmack Scholarship will first be awarded for the 2002-03 academic year. Scholarship criteria will b e available after july 1, 2001 on the Foundation portion of the Pi Beta Phi Web site or by contacting the Foundation office
Sign of the Arrow Melissa Scholarship
This community service based scholarship will provide an annual award of up to $10,000. The scholarship honors Missouri Beta Melissa Gail Aptman who was tragically killed two weeks prior to her graduation from Washington University in St. Louis , Missouri. The first ever recipient of this unique and generous award is lowa Gamma Kelly Ann Koeppel. Kelly is majoring in children and family services and has demonstrated an outstanding commitment to Pi Beta Phi, her school and her community. Kelly has established herself as a leader within her chapter at lowa State University, as well as with the school's Panhellenic Council , for which she will serve as the 2001 collegiate Panhellenic president.
"'To lead is to serve,' are words after which 1 have modeled my life," Kelly says.
Platinum Link added to Trustee Society
The Foundation has introduced a new link , the Platinum Link, into the Trustee Society. The Trustee Society was established to honor donors who demonstrated a steadfast commitment to the Pi Beta Phi Foundation with their high level of financial support. In 2000 , the Board of Trustees expanded the Trustee Society to honor all donors making cumulative unrestricted gifts totaling $250 or more to the Friendship Fund within one fiscal year. Total unrestricted giving in the amount of $250-499 during the fiscal year qualifies a donor for membership in the Bronze Link; gifts totaling of $500-999 qualifies a donor for membership in the Silver Link ; and gifts totaling $1 ,000-2 ,499 qualifies a donor for membership in the Gold Link of the Trustee Society. With the addition of this new link, donors making cumulative unrestricted gifts totaling $2 ,500 or more during a fiscal year will now be honored as members of the Platinum Link of the Trustee SOCiety .

I N D IANA B ETA'S second "Wine and Blues " dance was a huge success The dance is an annual alcohol-free event that collegiate members, alumnae and Indiana University officials attend for a night of blues music , dancing and hors d 'oe uvres.
This past fall at Montana State Un ive rsity, MO NTANA ALPHA me m bers celebrated the chapter's birthday by throwing a birthday party , comp lete with cake, games and party favors They invited the men of Sigma u as party guests.
Recently , O HIO THETAS decked out in seventies gear for a '70s party with the men of Sigma Chi. During the party, the men were able to let members know about their bike ride from Cincinnati to Bowling Green State University for dance marathon .
During the Mizzou football season at the University of Missouri, MISSOURI ALPHAS and the ir homecoming fratern ity partner purchase a block of tickets so that members of both chapters can get to know one another (above) . Members also hold a PMS (popcorn , movies and sisters) night during which they rent a large screen TV and several classic girl mov ies , get lots of snacks and gather for some sisterhood time
V IRGINIA T H ETAS at Washington and Lee University have participated in alcohol-free events rangi ng from a Valentine's Day movie party to a Saturday spent at a refreshing spa.

The school's pan hellenic has also helped in the alcohol-free event planning. One of the biggest hits has been a Bibl e stu d y for pan hellenic members. It was so well received that the group p lans to begin inviting fraternity members, as well
Before pep rallies at the University of Arkansas, ARKANSAS ALPHAS hosted hot dog suppers with their paired fraternity. They also held spirit parties during which members made posters and spirit sticks for games and school events.

TEXAS ETAS at Texas A&M University have enjoyed weekly alcohol-free events such as a chapter Bible study and Greek Life, a student-led Bible study hosted at the Kappa Kappa Gamma house. Through Greek Life, members have participated in bowling, roller skating and putt-putt socials . Another alcohol-free activity chapter members enjoyed was a Progressive Fast Food Dinner, which was a pre-date party event that gave chapter members and their dates a fun and safe way to pre-party (above) .
IlliN OIS IOTAS cosponsored the first ever sisterhood exchange at Illinois State University by hosting a dinner in celebration of sisterhood with the women of Delta Delta Delta. Chapter members also enjoyed a spring break themed chapter meeting. Members dressed up in spring-break attire and were treated to leis and fruit smoothies and shared spring break stories after the meeting.
CAuFORNIA GAMMAS at the University of Southern California have been enjoying alcohol-free Diversity Exchanges. During these exchanges chapter members team up with another fraternity to discuss today's social issues such as race, gender, religion and class discrimination. Indl\lduals In the group recogntze differences and share the pressures collegians face in society today .
This spring, IWNOIS ZETAS at the University of Illin ois teamed with the men of Farmhouse to participate in the Atius-Sachem Moms' Day Sing. Members practiced their singing and danCing rourine for three months to perform in a competition during the all-campus Mothers ' Day Weekend.
Recently at the University of Wyoming, W YOMI NG ALPHAS invited Sigma Phi Epsilon members to an etiquette dinner.
For Halloween at Drake University , the men of Tau Kappa Epsilon came to the I OWA E TA house in costume for hot apple cider and games . The chapter also enjoyed a day of volleyball, !lag football. barbequing and attending a Three Penny Opera \\lth the men o f Sigma Phi Epsilon.
In late October, the ational PanHellenic Council at Iowa State University invited I OWA G AMMAS to come to the NPHC Step Show that was held on campus. After the step show, everyone headed to an alcohol-free party on campus to watch all the PHC chapter members perform their stroll again.
OHIO EPSILO NS at the University of Toledo have partiCipated in many alcohol-free events such as a Christmas party with the Sig Eps, bowling with the Pikes, an all-you-can-eat pancake phest with the Beta Sigs, and an Easter egg painting party with the women of Chi Omega.
TENNESS EE DELTAS at the University of Memphis have partiCipated in many alcohol-free socials with other organizations including a capture-the -!lag swap with the men of Kappa Alpha and a swing dancing swap with the women of Phi Mu and the men of Sigma Alpha Epsilon and Pi Kappa Alpha.
INDIANA DELTAS at Purdue University joined another sorority and two fraternities and rented Pizza King to have dinner and get to know one another. They also enjoyed roller skating at their annual Friendship Dinner (above).
VIRGINIA ETAS held an on-campus social at the University of Richmond with the women of Delta Gamma where they enjoyed refreshments and an hour of music performed by the Octaves, an allmale acapella group Chapter members also held an ice cream study break during exam week with the Kappa Alpha Thetas. Kappa Erin Hancock and Pi Phi Eva Horn enjoyed a joint Kappa Kappa Gamma and Pi Beta Phi dinner (above).
ViRGINIA GAMMAS at the College of William and Mary attended an afterhours ice cream social at a local Baskin Robbins.
W ASHIN GTO N B ErAS at Washington State University hosted an alcohol-free dance at their house with the men of Pi Kappa Alpha. Members cleared all the tables and chairs from the dining room one Friday night, set up a sound system in the kitchen and had a great time
Every Monday , W ISCO NSIN D ElTAS join other Marquette University fraternity and sorority members at the Marquette bowling alley, The Annex Each organization has formed a bowling team for the Monday-night league play.
On Super Bowl weekend, OREGON Au>HAS partiCipated in flag football games with Sigma Chi, Lambda Chi Alpha and Kappa Kappa Gamma at the University of Oregon Each team was comprised of members of each chapter and wore colors of the Super Bowl teams. The next day, the group watched the actual game together. Members also teamed with Delta Gamma and Sigma Kappa members to make valentines for a retirement community.
This spring, OREGON GAMMA and Phi Delta Theta at Willamette University he ld the firs t Black Light Paint Party. Hosted a t the Phi Delt house, more than 300 guests and members congregated for the party. Several who attended agreed it was the best party under the new alcohol-free policy.
Recently, each FLORIDA B ErA member who belongs to the Pi Society, which means she holds a 3.14 GPA or higher, was invited to the Florida Beta house for a scholarship meeting. But , instead of a meeting, the women were treated to a free night at the movies. Everyone piled into cars adorned with Pi Phi letters and dashed off to the theater. Once they arrived the members were given $5 to buy whatever treats they wanted before seeing "The Wedding Planner" in their private theater.
MICm GAN Au> HAS at Hillsdale College held a no-alcohol Super Bowl XXXV party for non-Greeks , as well as other Greek chapters Chapter members have also been enjoying a cheap and alcohol-free movie night every Tuesday when the local movie theater ' s tickets are just $3
ABOVE LEFT: CONNECTICUT ALPHAS at the University of Connecticut have enjoyed a pasta dinner with the men of Beta Theta Pi and Chi Phi and a pizza party with the Kappa Sigmas. The chapter also held several sisterhood events including a beach-themed party and a Tom Cruise movies night as a study break during midterms.
ABOVE MIDDLE: Some of the alcohol-free events that INDIANA EpSILONS have participated in include pizza parties, grab-adates, Parents' Weekend activities with another fraternity and a DePauw University-sponsored Monon Bell party with two other fraternities and three other sororities
ABOVE: COLORADO DELTAS and the men of Sigma Alpha Epsilon split up into two coed teams and had an all-day water fight . Teams attempted to soak each other during passing periods at the Colorado School of Mines, then met for an all-out water fight during lunch. The SAEs also hosted the annual "My Tie" event, in which their members send a box of ties to the Pi Phi house and each woman wears one around her neck. Members then head to the fraternity house to find out to whom the tie belongs , and this date takes her out with a few other couples The men of Sigma Nu entertained chapter members with a surprise Italian dinner. Everyone ordered the dinner's courses in Italian with no clue as to what the words meant. Some members ended up w ith silverware and a soda for one course and the ne xt cou rse had so u p with no eating u t en si ls.

20- Year Anniversary
In May, California Lambda Polly Russell celebrated 20 years as a Central Office employee Polly began working for the Fraternity in 1981 as the magazine agency coordinator and jewelry coordinator. When she accepted the job, Polly remembers, "1 don't even think I knew what the job was, I just knew 1 wanted to work there!" At that time Central Office was housed in a single room and there wasn ' t a computer in sight. All information that needed to be printed was sent to a data company that printed lists and other information. Polly then worked in jewelry and chapter accounting . Each chapter would send in their budgets and the money they spent and Polly made sure everything balanced. So, basically, she was the chapter treasurer for all Pi Phi chapters Next, Polly became the receptionist while still keeping her jewelry position, during which she sold former Council member Carol Inge Warren her Directors' badge. In 1989, she switched from both the jewelry coordinator and the receptionist to accounts receivable, where she still works today.
One of Polly's funniest memories was when Adrienne Hiscox Mitchell, who was then on Grand Council, visited Central Office the same day Polly ' s daughter was also visiting. When Polly turned to introduce Adrienne to her daughter her mind went blank. "I just said , 'I'd like you to meet this very important person ,'" Polly says with a laugh. However, Adrienne didn ' t mind at all and later became Polly's initiation sponsor. At the 1995 Convention , Polly and Systems Administrator Renee Wahle were initiated into Pi Phi. Both the pledging and the initiation ceremonies Polly says are the best experiences she ' s had since she has worked for the Fraternity. "To be initiated with Grand Council and almost all of Central Office there was an incredible experience ," Polly says Polly has been married to les for 48 years and has two daughters , Cindy and Sandy, and two grandchildren She has enjoyed the "good , good " friends s he has made at Central Office throughout the past 20 years and still stays in touch with many of them When she began working for Pi Phi , Polly says she told the past Executive Director Vrrginia Bland Fry , " I intend to retire from here ,» and she says , "1 meant it. But , I'm not read y to go yet!"

CALIFORNIA ZETA ANN MEREDITH arrived in East Africa for a three-month stint as one of the first Lila Wallace-Reader's Digest International A rtist Fellows. "SURVIVOR S!
The Sitting Room" is an exhibitio n selected from this three-month period in Ken ya. T h e exhibit consists of 12, I Ix 14 color pho tographs of the Luo Tribe in Ruma, a remote, high-risk village in N orth W estern Kenya on the edge of Lake Victoria. In Ruma, there is no electricity or running wat er, no medicine, no medical faci li ty, no d octors or nurses, and limited kerosene W hile A nn to o k photos, the tribal leaders spoke with the villagers about H IV/AI DS , personal care and health protection.
WASHINGTON GAMMA GRETCH EN SWAYZE WILB ERT was featured in Tacoma News Tribune 's january 2001 issue. She has served Gig Harbour, a fishing, tourist and commuting town 50 miles southwest of Seattle, Washington, as mayor for 12 years, the longest anyone in the town has ever served in that position. CROISANT has been appointed as Assistant Vice President Marketing of the Individual Medical Division and Starmark, a subsidiary of T rus tmark Insurance Company. Kim began working at T rustmark in 1991 as a Brokerage Account Manager and has served in several positions of increasing responsibility. She earned a bachelor's degree in business administration and marketing from the University of Illinois. and has receIved the profeSSIOnal deSignation Health Insurance Associate.
CALIFORNIA ETA JULIA KATO is "Kira," secretary to Susan Sarandon's character "Coco" in the Paramount Pictures box office hit "Rugrats in Paris: The Movie." Continuing her role as Kira, she also joins the popular Emmy Award winning TV show, "Rugrats," during its IOth Ann iversary season as a regular series. Recently , Julia donated a cast signed item that was auctioned to benefit Rosie O'Donnell's For All Kids Foundation charity. This summer Julia will be celebrating with the Rugrats as the show is honored with a prestigious star on Hollywood's Walk of Fame. julia has worked on two other Emmy Award winning shows , "Steven Spielberg Presents Animaniacs" and "Batman: The Animated Series. " Some of her other credits include "Married With Children ," "The Legend of Calamity jane," "The New Batman/S uperman Adve nture s" and numerous commercials.

WHEELER PATTERSON was recently awarded the Pacesetter Lifetime Achievement Award, which was developed after the 2001 Pacesetter Award nomination committee could not decide how to recognize Virginia's outstanding contributions to the Boulder , Colorado community. Not only did Virginia raise three children and operate a book, card and gift shop with her husband , she has served on the Boulder Rotary Club, the Boulder Valley Board of Education for which she was preSident for two terms , the Boulder Chamber of Commerce and the Boulder Community Hospital board of directors.

ALUMNAE C LU B held its International Night on March 12 at the home of Missouri Beta Sue Hendry Manley. The well-traveled club members, who, combined, have visited all but one continent, shared stories, pictures , scrapbooks and memorabilia from their international trips. They also enjoyed tasting international treats and seeing Sue's large collection of dolls from different countries.
Florida Beta Carolyn Crews-Whitby organized a joint book exchange and ice cream social for O RlANDO-W INTER PARK., FWRIDA ALUMNAE CLUB members and Florida Epsilon members. The group donated 193 children's books to OrlOVlSta Elementary and the other 161 books to the Evans Adult and Community Education Family Service Center.

GAMMA members from the 1950 pledge class gathered for a reunion in Pennsylvania at the Seven Springs Resort. Three days were spent catching up with pictures, talking, laughing and hugging. Most of the members had not seen one another in years, so many stories were shared. "Time may have changed how we all looked in the 1950 photos, but nothing had changed the wonderful feelings we all had for being sisters in the wine and blue," Nancy Huff Allen writes. "How truly blest we all were to have Pi Phi enter our lives 50 years ago."
