A Pi Phi Passport for Fun

Destination Atlanta, Georgia. On June 28, more than 1,300 Pi Phis from around the country arrived at the Marriott Marquis in Atlanta, Georgia, for four days of friendship and fun. The agenda for the trip to Pi Beta Phi's 61st Biennial Convention featured new legislation, traditional ceremonies, and information about the latest achievements of collegiate chapters and alumnae clubs.
On the following pages, The ARROW takes you on a visual journey through Convention 1997. If you were unable to attend • this year's convention, here is your passport for some sight-
seeing. And if you did attend, these pages will be a trip down memory lane. Glimpse the smiling faces of collegians and alumnae enjoying the feelings of sisterhood that punctuated convention. Review the schedule of events and workshops from four days of legislation and laughter. Check out award winners, speakers and workshops. Bon Voyage.

The point of time or space at which anything starts-Webster's Dictionary
When does time begin Jor you? Is it New Year's Eve as the clock rolls to midnight? Or the
start oj a new Jiscal year when budgets are yours to meet? For educators and students the year 's beginning is colored with new school supplies and Jail Joliage. For me, as editor, time begins with the inception oj each new issue.
Although it doesn't matter whether Jor you time starts with choruses oj revelers singing "Auld Lang Syne" or with freshly sharpened No.2 pencilS-it is important to note that time is subjective. Everyone has a different beginni ng point that serves to advance those things that are important in life.
For the Fratemity, time begins with convention and the start oj a new biennium At
Pi Beta Phi 's 61st Biennial Convention collegians and alumnae met, exchanged ideas, passed legislation , elected new officers and shared a renewed spirit that will guide the Fratemity to our next convention in Houston, Texas.
As a convention attendee, one realizes that she is a part oj something much bigger than the beginning oj another biennium. This new beginning builds on top oj 130 years oJhistory.
Pi Beta Phi is much more than anyone member's Jour-year college experience. Much like aJamily, there is a history and a genealogy. According to Australian author and Jeminist Germaine Greer, 'There have been women in the past Jar more daring than we would need to be now , who ventured all and gained a little, but survived aJter all. "
This spirit oj daring is still alive. As you will see in this issue , collegians and alumnae are continuing the standard oj excellence started by our Founders It is our proud beginning that makes this Fratemity strong.

Summer A R ROW
Usually when 1 receive my copy of The ARROW, 1 skim through , then set it aside. However, 1 read the Summer 1997 issue straight through and thoroughly enjoyed it. I'm a retired journalist who worked on women's pages , arts and reviews during the rise of the Women's Movement
All those enterprising, creative Pi Phis were great and made me proud to be a Pi Phi. The stories were wellwritten, and 1 enjoyed the pictures. In my tastes, this issue is a real prize-winner. Thanks for all of it.

Eastern Kentucky University's National Alumni Association has just completed Thank-a-thon '97, a telephone campaign that seeks to thank the university's active alumni for their financial support
I'm pleased to report that representatives from the university's chapter of Pi Beta Phi were among the nine student organizations participating in this year's campaign.
Thanks to the efforts of those 150 student vo lunteers, the university 's first alumni thank-a-thon has set a precedent for student volunteerism and alumni donor recognition. These private gifts from our alumni continue to help us enhance our academic programs and to improve access to higher education. Therefore , student efforts in calling and thanking alumni are not only necessary, but also much appreciated.

Consultant Reunion
In June 1991, we all met for the first time in St. Louis We were fresh out of college, a little sad about graduation, eager to start our year of traveling, and completely unaware that the women we were meeting would become lifelong friends
Now, five years, seven bright and diverse careers, several master's degrees, and two husbands later, we met again for a weekend of fun and reminiscing in San Francisco. This time we were fres h out of the office, not quite as excited about the "glamour" of traveling life, but ecstatic about seeing old friends.
1 am hardly the sentimental one of the group Gust ask any of the other consultants), but 1 would like to say that I'm not sure how-or if-Grand Council knew what they were doing back in 1991 when they put us all together. On behalf of the 1991-92 ''T's'' and "R's" Thank You!

Spring Elderhostel Attracts Pi Phis to Arrowmont
Spring, with its blooming Oowers and rebirth of the Great Smoky Mountains , is always a spec ial time at Arrowmont.
April brought two one-week sessio ns of Spring Elderhost e l classes. Specifically designed for students age 55 and older, Elderhostel classes attract stu dents from across th e country.
Pi Phis Connie Clark Akin, Ruth Brooks Muir and Susan Hyams Ivy attended this year's Spring Elderhostel.
Texas Alpha Conn ie Akin first came to Arrowmont two years ago to take a paper-making class with some lri ends. " I am so impressed with Arrowmont ' s fa c ulty ," Co nnie says. "The quality of instruction is superior to c lasses I've taken elsewhere."
Connie enjoyed the s tain e d-glass class taught by Gatlinburg res ident Bill May. " I believe the teacher make s the s ubject come alive. Bill May is such a wonderful teacher. H e trul y instills co nfidence in his students "
Connie felt a specia l sense o f pride when several of the other Elderhostel participants thanked her , sayi ng " You Pi Phi 's really know how to do things right. We love it here at Arrowmont."
Already lookin g fotward to h er next visit, Connie says she would lik e to take a wood-turning class. " I enjoy meeting other students who are all so interesting and enthusiastic," she says. "for me, I most certainly belie\'e that an is therapeutic. I get lost in myan , and it's like a total escape."
Gretchen Church

Florida Alpha Ruth Muir is a newly trained Arrowmont Ambassador for Pi Beta Phi. " I believe many Pi Phis are easily d iscouraged from taking an art class because they th ink the classes are only for profe ss io nals," Ruth says. "The Ambassador program is ex tremely success ful in in c reas ing awareness that Arrowmont is for everyo ne. "
An art major in co llege , Ruth used art therapy in her fam ily counseling ca reer. She found that art has a positive effect on the people s he works with. " I try to get my clients to remember what the y enjoyed as c hildren, " Ruth says. "It can be as simp le as co loring with crayo ns or playing a Oute It really doe s n ' t matter as long as the y are c re a ting something. "
Ruth enrolled in the silk-painting class at Arrowmont this spring. " I am always amazed at th e professional le vel of teaching at Arrowmont , yet in such a relaxed a tm osphere that make s it feel like home ," she says. Ruth plans to return this fall for a watercolor class.
Louisiana Alpha Susan h)' has taken silk-painting at Arrowmont four times. Unable to paint at home because she lacks the necessary equipment,
School's 1996 Elderhostel. Susan designs and teache s canvasneed lepoint. Stitching since she was 6 years old, Susan finds that art is a wonderfu l stress re lease
Since her c h ildhood , Susan has been visiting Arrowmont and has develo p ed a love for the area . " During and afte r co llege, I remained very tun ed in to Arrowm ont , " she says. " It is rejuvenating. There's a wonderful aura here o n ca mpus. Arrowmont has a unique mixture of solitude and c reative energy that you just don ' t find in many places."

New Work "Springs Up" in Arrowmont Sculpture Garden

Ron Koe hle r inspects student Tracy Melton 's stone sculptu re-in-th e -ma ki ng during 1997 spring class "Th e Hidd e n Image : Sculpting in S tone ."
Stone sculptor Ron Koehler has quite a history at Arrowmont. Professor of Art at Delta State Universiry in Cleveland, Mississippi , Ron has taught at Arrowmont five times and was a member of the Arrowmont staff in 1982. In fact, Ron met his wife , Catherine , at Arrowmont, when she and her mother were enrolled in a screen-printing class.
So, it was quite fitting when Arrowmont Director Sandra Blain asked Ron to design and donate a sc ulpture for the Arrowmont Sculpture Garden. Ron 's piece, "Spring Leap," joins two others in the garden, which is located next to Hughes Hall.
"Us ually I dislike creating commissioned pieces , yet 'Spring Leap ' was an enjoyable, easy piece to complete," Ron says. "Spring Leap " is a marbled fish in a complete circle, vertically mounted on an oval limestone base . The fish
mirrors one of Ron ' s trademarks-the circular theme. "I believe that, for me, circles symbolize cycles," he says. "Cycles of change, cycles of life, returning to the beginning and starting over. " Ron says that he enjoys all aspects of Arrowmont. He says that the school's equipment is far superior to other art schools he has visited. He enjoys being with students. "] enjoy seeing a beginner 's pride in completing his or her work ," he says. "I get many ideas from students and much satisfaction from teaching at Arrowmont, more than at the university level because] think the students here really want to learn. "
Ron hopes to return to Arrowmont soon. He wants to take a wood-turning class in the new studio. From instructor, to staff member, to student, it seems that Ron Koehler has come full circle.

Adrienne Mitchell Retires
after 26 Years of Service
After serving Pi Beta Phi for 26 years , Adrienne Hiscox Mitchell , president of the Foundation , retired in July . Adrienne's list of service to Pi Beta Phi is impressive . A two-generation legacy, Adrienne attended the University of Kansas where she served as chapter treasurer After college , she was president of her alumnae club and city Panhellenic , Province Coordinator , Province President, and Director of Academic Standards. She served the Grand Council as Grand Vice President of Collegians and Grand Vice President of Philanthropies During her last year on Grand Council , Adrienne became one of the pioneers for the Foundation Adrienne served on the Foundation Board of Trustees first as Grand Council counterpart , then as secretary and finally as president of the Foundation
Some have said that Adrienne sees Pi Phi through the eyes of the Founders , yet has the ability to translate that viewpoint into the future . It is this ability to be progressive without lOSing sight of purpos e that made Adrienne an effective leader for the Founda tion
The Fraternity owes Adrienne a debt of gratitude for her many years of unselfish service t o Pi Beta Phi.

In this role, he has escalated sponsorship and annual conference revenues His focused and organized efforts have reshaped the program and have added a new , successful dimension to the organization.
Abe began his fraternal journey as chapter president of his Phi Delta Theta ho u se at the University of Ta m pa, where he received his bachelor's degree in urban affairs.
