ROMANCE DE LA LUNA, LUNA Music: Miquel Ortega Poem: F. García Lorca Spanish (orig.) Niño déjame, no pises, mi blancor almidonado.
English. The moon came to the forge with her bustle of tuberoses. The boy watches her, watches. The boy is staring at her. In the moved air the moon waves her arms and shows, lustful and pure, her breasts of hard tin. Run, moon, moon, moon. If the gypsies came, they would make of your heart white necklaces and rings. Child, let me dance. When the gypsies come, they will find you on the anvil with your little eyes closed. Run, moon, moon, moon, for I already feel their horses. Child, let me, don’t tread on my starched whiteness. The rider approached beating the plain’s drum. Inside the forge the boy has his eyes closed. Through the olive grove they came, bronze and dream, the gypsies. Heads held high and eyes half-closed. How the tawny owl sings, oh, how she sings in the tree! Through the sky goes the moon with the child by the hand. Inside the forge they cry, shouting, the gypsies. The air keeps vigil, keeps vigil. The air is watching over her.
