Insurance Myths, Millennials & More They have the least understanding InsuranceQuotes.com did a study of auto and homeowners insurance knowledge. Millennials — those coming to adulthood around the year 2000 — scored the worst though other age groups didn’t do that well either.

While this survey aims at personal lines, it does point out that most people do not have much in the way of insurance knowledge and we — those in the industry — would do well to pay more attention to educating our clients.

Or so says spokeswoman Laura Adams who hits the uninformed and those — agents and companies — who should be doing the informing. “These results indicate that millions of Americans need a refresher on what insurance does and does not cover. It doesn’t hurt just to pick up your phone and talk to your company or agent.”

Like other industry advisors, Adams recommends agents suggest and schedule a once a year insurance policy go-over.

And the survey says...

• 42% think people with red cars pay higher insurance rates than those with vehicles of other colors.

• Of those, 53% are Millennials.

• 44% of the 42% have college – or higher – degrees.

• 36% make $75,000 a year or more.

• Only 56% accurately know that insurance covers repairs for the motorist at fault.

• 20% — oddly enough — think they have to pay out of their own pockets even if the accident is not their fault.

• 34% think car insurance replaces stolen items when it is actually homeowners and renters that takes care of those things.

Millennial Marketing Tricky but worth the effort Millennials are those who came to adulthood around the year 2000. Getting them to understand insurance, and the importance of purchasing insurance from an agent and not a website, is tough.

PropertyCasualty360.com recently consulted with marketing experts from The Hartford, Moore Communications Group, Microsoft and a few others, and 30 millennials.

The results are fascinating.

Reaching them is an easy start. Communicate with the millennials on your staff or the millennials in your family. Ask them to look

over your marketing materials, your website, your Facebook page and its entrees, and other communication packages. Then listen to them and their advice.

Questions you want answered: • How are we doing?

• How would you change what we’re doing?

• How would you change what the insurance industry is doing?

• Are we accessible?

Top Stories Once you’ve kicked things around with staff members and other millennials, then reach out to the millennial generation. They are going to do research on you before buying. Count on that. It’s a fact equal to the sun rising and setting. You need to find out where they are and be there when they get there. This is places like Yelp and other communities.

Make sure your website has some sort of social media presence.

Learn technology. Technology is important to them and they expect it to be important to you. The website needs to be smartphone and other mobile device friendly. And speaking of friendly. Lots of friendly photos and fun stuff needs to be on your website and social media pages. These pics don’t always have to be insurance related. It’s just as important to be perceived as fun.

Pick the type of millennial client you want and cater to them. This is a generation that has been pampered and told how wonderful they are from the time they were born through the end of high school. They expect you to love them, too.

Turn things around. They don’t find insurance or estate planning or anything like that particularly interesting. Make it interesting by finding a way to apply technology to it. Videos, photos, infographics and other engaging content — as noted earlier — must be on your website and Facebook page and wherever else you have a technology presence.

Another reason this is critical is because they have zip for an attention span. The average span is like eight-seconds.

All of your communications channels need to be aimed at them. Most prefer texting to phone calls. An email works for a reminder better

than a phone call. But before deciding how an individual wants communication, ask them.

So now you’ve communicated with them and they love the website, Facebook and all and you actually set up a meeting that they actually attend. Make your pitch but make it short. If it’s normally 30-minutes, find a way to do it in 10.

Then sit back and give them time to research what you told them. Most will do that.

This is where having a duplicate of the information in the pitch online is helpful.

And that brings us to online. The experts hinted around about it, now they’re getting serious.

You ought to have an advertising presence on one of them. It can be Facebook, Twitter, Instagram, Netflix. Any of them. Talk with your millennials and see what they say about where you ought to be.

You will not — REPEAT — will NOT reach them on television or in newspaper. They’re not there.

Make sure any online presence is clean, neat, really cool and — most importantly — modern and refreshed frequently. If you haven’t updated in three-months you’ll be perceived as old.

Never — ever — be perceived as old in the eyes of millennials. Old means old-fashioned and old-fashioned is not to be trusted.

Lastly, millennials will research everything online. But they don’t want to be sold there.

The sale takes place face-to-face, or phone-tophone. Just make sure all of your information — everything you’ve told them — is accessible on your website, or wherever, 24/7.

Oh. Google. Make sure you’re searchable. If you contact them and they can’t find you then you lose credibility. n Source link: PropertyCasualty360.com

It’s that Time of Year State Farm does this every year. October, November and December are the time when you are most likely to collide with a deer, or an elk, or in some states, a moose. The national average number for 2015 is the same as 2014.

It’s 1 out of 169.

Ron Regan of the Association for Fish and Wildlife Agencies said, “Periods of daily highdeer movement around dawn and dusk as well as seasonal behavior patterns, such as during the October-December breeding season, increase the risk for autodeer collisions. Changes in collision rates from year to year are a reflection of changing deer densities or population levels – more deer in a given area increases the potential for collision.”

The average cost per claim is up 6% from 2014. In 2015 the estimate will be $4,135. Last year it was $3,888.

Staying Focused: Battling the Afternoon Drag Most of us are early risers. Some of us are early risers and also hit the sack rather late. All of us — especially as we age — face the midafternoon blahs. Lots is left to be done and the last thing you want to do is get it done.

Here are some ideas to pump up your afternoon and make it more productive.

First, eat a healthy snack. This isn’t something laden with sugar. We don’t need the roller coaster high of sugar. The goal is to keep sugar levels level all day. You can Google a bunch of ideas as to what will make the perfect midafternoon snack.

Second, schedule your meetings for afternoon.

The same with important deadlines. These keep you focused. Do the easier stuff in the morning.

Your body and brain will find it easier to focus and stay focused if what you’re doing in the afternoon is critical to the job.

Third. Go for a walk. Get some fresh air. This gets oxygen flowing and clears the head.

The recommended walk length is five to 10-minutes.

Fourth. Stay hydrated. You actually should be doing this all day long. Also, experts say a touch of coffee won’t hurt your afternoon either.

Five. Do some meditation. It’s like a mini-nap.

Meditation and slow breathing completely switch off the brain and is a battery recharge.

Six. Upbeat music after mediation revs up the engine and gets you going strong.

Seven. Breathing and stretching. While the music roars — or at least is hearable if you’re in a cubicle situation — do some breathing and stretching. Twist your torso and head left and right. Curve your back. Then sit up straight and breathe in and out.

Two Reports

September Rates & 2015 Profits Keeyfe, Bruyette & Woods (KBW) and MarketScout both issue market reports at the end of September. Both said P&C rates dropped by an average of 1% in September.

August was flat.

And with that MarketScout CEO Richard Kerr said insurers are starting to making pricing changes as the market softens. “We expect pricing on most lines to be adjusted downward with a few exceptions such as commercial automobile/transportation risks and accounts with poor loss experience or other underwriting concerns,” he said.

In its statement on rates, KBW said, “We expect rates to remain modestly negative in the coming months as the industry adjusts to significant excess capital.”

Here’s the bottom-line: Jumbo accounts: $1 million and over — fell 4%.

Large accounts: $250,001 to $1 million — are down 1%.

Medium accounts: $25,001 to $250,000 — flat.

Small accounts: Up to $25,000 — flat.

It’s these results, and the more or less flat year for rates that is driving KBW’s negative rating of the industry. “We expect rate changes to remain modestly negative over the next few months. We’re pretty neutral on primary commercial insurers, as sustained underwriting margin improvement is unlikely with rates trailing loss cost trends, especially if reserve development fades further,” KBW’s report concluded.

While rates are dropping, 2015 — says A.M. Best — will see the industry posting a third consecutive underwriting profit. Net premiums, underwriting results and net income all improved in the first half of the year.

The rating firm came to that conclusion in its report Property/Casualty Posts Improved Underwriting Results and Net Income During First Half of 2015. And along with positives the report has some warnings. Increased stockholder dividends and changes in surplus and capital losses have A.M. Best concerned.

Here are some of the reports results: After tax net income was $9.9 billion.

That’s up from $7.3 billion in the first six months of 2014.

Pretax operating income hit $7.0 billion — up 17.1% from the $6.0 billion in 2014.

Underwriting loss mid-year is $745 million compared to $2.3 billion in the same time period in 2014.

Policyholders surplus remains unchanged from a year ago at $683.7 billion.

Personal lines earnings jumped substantially from 2014 to now.

Underwriting expense growth is outpacing premium growth.

Total underwriting expenses are up 4.5% to $71.7 billion in the first two quarters.

The combined ratio is 97.8 — a bit better than 2014’s 99.0 — in quarters one and two.

Commercial lines report a 5.4% jump in direct premiums. It’s at $134.7 billion — up from $127.8 billion.

Work comp, general liability, auto liability and inland marine are doing best.

Cyber Risk Now Officially Consumer Concern Big business has worried about cyber attacks for several years. The federal government worries started a few years after that.

Consumers have been slower to the party. But they’re there now.

The 2015 Travelers Companies consumer risk survey said 57% of us now classify cyber risk as a worry. That’s up from 36% in 2014. It puts it as number-three on the list. The top two are 1) financial concerns and risks and 2) personal privacy and identity theft risk.

Travelers senior VP Patrick Gee said, “Cyber threats are joining the ranks of the conventional issues that individuals have worried about for decades.”

Here are the rest of the survey concerns: • 62% worry about hacked bank and financial accounts.

• 60% worry about virus attacks on their personal computers.

• 59% worry about online or offline ID theft.

• 58% are concerned about their personal information being compromised in a retailer cyber attack.

• 60% are concerned that their personal computers or mobile devices will be infected by a virus.

• 43% worry their medical records will be breached.

The Travelers survey show 25% of us think we’ve experienced a data breach or a cyber attack. Those under 55 worry about that more than those over 55.

The survey also checked in with people who have been victims of cyber attacks. They talked about what they’re doing to prevent more of that in the future: • 86% have chosen stronger passwords.

• 78% of those picking stronger passwords are keeping them private.

• 84% limit personal information they put on the Internet.

• Just 76% overall have such limits in place.

• 75% have their web browser outfitted with the latest security features.

• Overall, just 69% do that.

It’s Already October? Time to Revisit Health Insurance Is it already October? Wow. How time flies. And as we know, in October the annual analysis of our employer sponsored and individual health insurance policies begins. Decisions must also be made soon, but first a look at where we are.

And where we are is at historically low-rising rates and historically rising deductibles. The Obama administration takes part of the credit for the low-rising rates. It announced last week that the first two-years of ObamaCare produced 17.6 million more insured than were insured before the implementation of the Affordable Care Act. Of those 15.3 million are insured via Medicaid and 2.3 million people under age 26 have insurance from the plans of their parents.

Anyway, two research groups the Kaiser Family Foundation and the Health Research & Educational Trust found dropping premiums and up-front, rising deductibles means patients are now more responsible for their share of medical costs than before. Kaiser spokesman and CEO Drew Altman said, “While it’s absolutely true that we’ve been living in a period of an historic slowdown in healthcare costs, it’s almost invisible to consumers. What they pay for health care is going up at a time when their wages are relatively flat.”

Premiums in 2015 rose just 3.8%. The average worker paid $1,071 of the average $6,251 it costs a company to insurer them. Deductibles jumped 9% and the up-front costs now average $1,077 a year per person.

It gets worse. Since 2010 deductibles have gone up 67%. Premiums — on the other hand — jumped about a third of that at 24%. In

all deductibles are now 81% and rising. That compares to 70% in 2010 when ObamaCare passed Congress.

There are two reasons for the increases. First, employers are shifting costs to employees so health insurance costs are not so high for them.

Second, workers having to pay more for health care tend to use it less and that has kept price increases down.

Clare Krusing of Americas Health Insurance Plans said, “When you are trying to provide affordable coverage and low premiums for individuals, often times there are trade-offs, and deductibles are one of those trade-offs.” n Source links: insurancejournal.com and The Hill

Uninsured and Underinsured in America Swiss Re just published a report saying over $221 billion in property goes uninsured every year. The conclusion of Underinsurance in Property Risk: Closing the Gap is not a surprise. What does come as a bit of a surprise is where most of that uninsured property is located.

It’s in the United States and it makes the U.S. the most uninsured country on the planet.

This isn’t to say the rest of the world is doing much better. Prosperous China and Japan also have huge swaths of country with property that is uninsured. Emerging markets like Brazil and the Philippines are also largely uninsured.

Top Stories Swiss Re chief economist Thomas Halzhou says each year there is an estimated $153 billion in losses that are uninsured. “This is even a conservative estimate as it doesn’t consider things like hail, drought, or volcano.

So there’s a chance this [uninsured property] gap could be even higher,” he said.

The report lists the three most uninsured natural disasters. This is a global figure: • Earthquakes: 90% lack insurance

Update Cover Oregon & Oracle Lawsuit Cover Oregon — still — is ObamaCare’s biggest failure. The multi-million dollar exchange failed to register even one person when the Affordable Care Act became law almost two-years ago.

• Flooding: 6% lack insurance • Windstorms: 55% lack insurance In the United States Insurance Information Institute (I.I.I.) statistics show the areas of the lowest insurance penetration and the insured penetration percentage. None of these will be much of a surprise to you: • Earthquake: 10% have insurance • Flood: 14% have insurance • Renters: 40% have insurance • Cyber: 52% have insurance • Terrorism: 62% have insurance The report also lists the root causes of being under and uninsured: • Insurability — where risks like cyber liability or terrorism are hard to insure.

• Buying behavior — lack of consumer awareness or a faulty risk perception.

• Undervaluation — property is undervalued by an average of 26%.

The price tag was for developing Oregon’s exchange was — depending on who you ask — somewhere between $300 million and $350 million.

Now Oregon is suing main contractor the Oracle Corporation and is trying to recoup some or all of that money. Both sides are currently in a procedural battle over who all can be included. Oracle wants five of its executives excluded from the suit.

The state disagrees.

A Marion County judge said they can be included so Oracle went to the Oregon Supreme Court. Oregon says the five — including ex-CEO Safra Catz — conspired to get rich off of Oregon taxpayers and made false claims about the condition of the exchange. Oracle argues that people can’t be sued for actions on behalf of their employer.

Age and Insurance One of the top concerns of the insurance industry is who is going to run things when the current crop of Baby Boomers retire.

Finding talent in the nation’s now largest age group’s the Millennials — those coming to adulthood around the year 2000 — is very difficult. Millennials can be convinced to become an employee of the industry in this capacity or that but it’s not easy.

The Great Recession may have helped a bit.

Allianz Senior Economist Dr. Michaela Grimm said many of those eligible to retire are putting those plans off because retirement savings and investments got hit hard. Grimm says one in three workers worldwide is over the age 50.

“It’s wishful thinking to assume that once the baby boomers retire, we will be able to go back to the formal normal. In the long run, one in three people will be working over the age of 50. Companies will have to adjust — at the moment, they don’t feel it because only about 55% of these workers are on the level market,” Grimm said.

Experts say over the next decade the industry will need to find 60,000 new agents and brokers each year to just break even. As you know, the industry isn’t coming close to that number. Here’s some good news. The Bureau of Labor Statistics and its Current Population Survey disagrees with industry experts and sets the average age of the nation’s insurance agents at 45.6 years. That’s a whopping 12 or so below the 60 just noted.

More good news — kind of. A bunch of other industries — 13 in this story — are older than insurance. That is if you accept the 45.6 age figure. n

Professional Insurance Agents NE IA and The National Alliance held Iowa’s 37th Annual CIC & CRM Conferment Ceremony

Professional Insurance Agents NE IA along with The National Alliance held Iowa’s 37th Annual CIC & CRM Conferment Ceremony on October 15th, 2015. The luncheon took place at the Holiday Inn Hotel & Suites in West Des Moines and recognized those in Iowa who earned their CIC, CRM, CSRM or CISR designation within the past year. There were 34 CICís who earned their designation, making 634 CICs statewide.

There are 77 CRM designees in Iowa with the addition of the seven that were conferred this year. The ceremony began with a welcome and introduction from IA CIC Committee

Chair Person, LeaAnn Carlson, CIC, CRM, CISR, AU. Twelve CICís, two CRM’s and six CISR’s were in attendance at the ceremony and received their pins from Bernie Neff, CIC, CPCU, Education Consultant for the State of Iowa. The Iowa Outstanding Customer Service Rep of the year, Ms. Linsey Eiben, CIC, CISR from TrueNorth Companies in Cedar Rapids, IA, was also in attendance and received her award plaque. PIA NE IA is looking forward to another successful ceremony for Nebraska Conferees in November.
