WHAT WE ALREADY KNOW CONSUMERS PREFER INSURANCE AGENTS OVER TECHNOLOGY Those of us working in the business already know this but it’s nice to see a survey bear out this truth. Technology and a lot of online buying options have NOT changed the minds of consumers. They want to work with, and buy insurance from, an independent insurance agent.

In our case, it is an independent agent of the PIA. One form of proof of this premise — other than the survey information we’re about to share — is what some of the direct-to-consumer model insurance companies. They’re moving their business model from strictly online contact to using agents.

And this isn’t just for the benefit of older consumers.

A survey done by Agent Hero says from Generation Z on up, consumers want to work

with a person and not with a computer, or a phone. They find value in working with that agent. Here are some numbers: • 65% of all consumers will use an agent in the future • 81% of Baby Boomers will • 79% of Generation X consumers will • 84% of Millennials like agents and will keep using them • 69% of Generation Z consumers who have worked with an agent will do so again Here’s a link to the Agent Hero survey. RISING GAS PRICES INFLATION HITTING THE GAS PUMPS Omicron hit the U.S. in December and when it hit, gas prices started falling. At the time the new variation of the virus hit, the price of a barrel of oil fell from $84 to $64. It didn’t take very long for a barrel to go back up to $84.

That’s not good news, and Patrick De Haan of GasBuddy. com says right now we’re seeing the calm before the storm.

Prices will soon hit $100 a barrel and by March we are going to see prices climbing to as high as $4 a gallon at the pump. The reason — De Haan says — is as omicron cases decline people are going to get out more and start traveling again. Gasoline producers will have trouble keeping up with increased travel, and especially the increased travel associated with Spring vacations.

He expects prices to go up a quarter or more and stay up through May. The long-haul, however, looks good. The U.S. Energy Information Institute (EIA) is the

federal government’s eye on energy, and it tracks energy prices and consumption. The most recent Short Term Energy Outlook was published last week. It said oil and gas prices ought to be dropping over the next two years.

Look for gas price averages to be $3.06 a gallon for most of 2022 and $2.81 a gallon next year in 2023.

CONSUMER WORRIES Rising Auto Costs that Include Insurance

The 2022 State of the American Driver Report is done each year by an insuretech auto ownership called, Jerry. It takes a good look at the ins and outs of driving in the U.S. The survey of 1,250 people aged 16 to 75, covers a lot of areas ranging from electric vehicles to self-driving vehicles to the high cost of owning an auto and insuring one. It also looks at how we all feel about driving, what interests us about it and our worries about that age old American tradition of driving.

The survey results start with electric vehicles: • 33% don’t think they’ll ever drive an allelectric car • 50% expect to drive one within the next decade Those wanting to drive electric cars are mostly millennials and Generation Z. Both generations think they’ll be able to drive an autonomous vehicle in the next five-years. They are most interested in those vehicles because they’re inexpensive to drive.

A big problem we all have with driving today — says Jerry’s data scientist, Lakshmi Iyengar — is how badly COVID has impacted the buying and selling of autos and how much it costs to drive one.

“Americans experienced sticker shock when shopping for new and used cars in 2021, and no relief is in sight this year,” Iyengar said.

“This raises the total cost of car ownership and creates the need to cut costs elsewhere. Despite significant EV interest due to expected cost savings, consumers likely won’t find immediate cost reductions when buying an EV. That may come over the next 10 years as technology and charging infrastructure mature.”

“Insurance carriers may not find this surprising given that the most expensive states are likely more densely populated and have more drivers on the road, which could be associated with risk of accidents,” Iyengar says. “Last year, insurance carriers offered short-term discounts to account for changing driving habits during the pandemic. At the end of 2021, we saw those discounts falling off, which will likely increase average cost for car insurance in 2022 for drivers. But not all workers are hitting the roads again.”

How much we’ll all be driving in the near future.

• 22% say they’ll drive a lot less in 2022 than they did in 2019 • 69% say they’re going to return to their pre-pandemic driving

“Insurers should expect to continue seeing customer interest in work from home or low annual mileage discounts in 2022, as driving habits remain impacted by COVID-19,” Iyengar says. “Additionally, we as an industry, cannot forget that shoppers for any product or service expect no more than a few clicks to complete a transaction. Customers are comfortable conducting the complete auto insurance transaction online and with no phone calls. Speed and simplicity are not optional.”

Here are some other facts found in the Jerry survey: • More of us will sell our cars in 2022 on digital platforms like Autotrader & Facebook’s marketplace • 50% drove instead of flying in 2021 • This year 44% intend to start flying again As for driving to work? We might continue to see a large number of people working from home.

A NEW SPORT

In TV Circles Insurance Tops Beer

Sports programming used to be dominated by beer commercials. Not anymore. Anyone watching the recently concluded National Football League playoff and the Superbowl know that to be true.

Insurance now rules sports programming.

The New York Post recently took a look at just how much energy and money insurance is putting into sports. In 2021 TV sports programming saw close to 15,560 beer commercials on the four largest TV networks: ESPN CNN MSNBC Fox News In terms of total minutes, cut that in half since most TV commercials are 30-seconds. That’s a lot of time. Not close — it appears — to what insurance did in 2021. Media advertising analyst iSport said on those same networks there was 109,297 minutes of insurance advertising. That’s a 52.3% increase from what was aired in 2016’s paltry 71,000 minutes.

Beer commercials — says iSpot — remained at about 7,000 minutes.

TOP STORIES PIA National Executive Vice President and CEO Mike Becker said the Allianz Risk Barometer now has cyber risk now tops COVID as the top business risk. In the recent PIA National / National Underwriter annual independent agent survey, 64% of agents say they’re concerned about serving clients online and noted data security and compliance are the reasons.

“In many respects, cyberattacks are the pandemic of technology. A cyberattack is lethal, destructive and can infect systems that are not protected. They can have devastating longterm effects, especially for small businesses.

Ransomware, phishing, and data breaches can cost insurance agencies hundreds of thousands of dollars,” Becker said. “It is critical that all business owners realize the magnitude of the threat and take action. That’s why PIA and The PIA Partnership created Winning@ Cybersecurity Defense, a comprehensive program to help independent insurance agents protect themselves and fight back.”

The program is a four-step resource to educate agents and their small and medium sized business clients about the most common dangers they face. It teaches best practices and coverages that can be obtained to reduce that risk.

RUSSIA’S INVASION Cyber Concerns & Insurance Woes

The Russian invasion of Ukraine has the insurance industry worried.

At the beginning of Russia’s invasion of Ukraine, Russian President Vladimir Putin warned the West about interfering with his plans. Putin said meddling will lead to “consequences you have never experienced.”

Though he has also issued veiled threats about using the nuclear option, experts in the West — and in the U.S. especially — translate Putin’s comments to mean cyber threats. Major businesses in the U.S. ranging from finance to utilities and other parts of the nation’s infrastructure are taking the cyber thoughts very seriously.

Jen Easterly is the director of the Cybersecurity and Infrastructure Security Agency. She says though there have not been specific threats, her agency has been urging U.S. businesses and other organizations to be very careful.

“Russia may consider taking retaliatory action in response to sanctions that may impact our critical infrastructure,” she tweeted.

Most vulnerable is energy. That’s why Energy Secretary Jennifer Granholm reached out to energy executives and warned them to be prepared for “the highest possible level for potential Russia-linked cyber and disinformation activity or cybercriminal activity from actors seeking to exploit the ongoing geopolitical situation.”

Serious cyber attacks mean serious losses for cyber insurers. A.M. Best predicts that cyber rates could skyrocket because of worries about an attack.

The economic sanctions — says Best’s Anna Sheremeteva — are also a big concern for insurers. “Further sanctions may impact the ability of international insurers and reinsurers to underwrite Russian risks or make it more difficult for them to service claims on existing policies,” she said. “Most affected would be those writing large energy and infrastructure risks, such as London Market insurers, and international reinsurers.”

NATURAL DISASTERS HIT 10% OF US IN 2021 CoreLogic’s Climate Change Catastrophe Report said natural disasters hit one if 10 of us in 2021. That totals up to 14.5 million single and multi-family homes. Property damage to those homes was $56.92 million.

Company spokesman, Tom Larson said the report came to that total by looking at 13 major and severe weather events and 120 million residential structures. Once those facts were entered, CoreLogic totaled the cost of reconstruction, or the cost of repair, in terms of materials, equipment and labor.

“By leveraging granular data for the increasing frequency and severity of catastrophes, we are able to see that more than 14.5 million homes were impacted to some degree by natural hazards in 2021,” he said. “That’s about one in every 10 homes in the United States.

Insurers and lenders can leverage the latest technologies and work cross-functionally to better understand this risk, protect homeowners and enable faster recovery times.”

He said the risk factors of natural hazard events have pushed costs for insurers and homeowners in many areas of the country.

Larson gave California as an example. He said between 2017 and 2020, the cost of fire and homeowners insurance rose from $8.7 billion to $11.1 billion.

THAT’S AN INCREASE OF 27%.

Larson then broke the report down into four categories: wildfire, hurricanes, severe weather and winter storms.

Wildfires caused $1.46 billion in property damage. Over 4,000 homes were hit and the reconstruction costs hit $0.73 billion.

Hurricanes did $33 billion in damages.

Reconstruction costs to 1,233,860 homes was $395 billion.

Severe weather reconstruction cost value was $124 billion. The 563,637 homes saw $7.46 billion in property damage.

Winter storms did $15 billion in property damage. Reconstruction value for the 12,764,941 homes was $2.27 trillion.

“Nearly every property in the U.S. has exposure to hazard risk, and the effects of a catastrophic event can result in an unstable economy with high levels of unemployment and mortgage delinquency,” the report concluded.

From 2020 to 2021, FTF frequency jumped 21% for companies with less than $25 million in annual revenue.

For those with income of $25 million to $100 million, revenue jumped almost three times that to 68%.

Coalition’s report says the tactics used to get into company books to do the fraudulent transfers is via phishing and business emails designed to look official. Once the criminals get access to the business accounts from those sources, they can easily manipulate contracts or payment schedules without arousing suspicion.

The company offered some advice you might want to share with your small business clients — and maybe follow yourself.

These same criminals also use false payment instructions from customers or vendors.

In the first half of 2021 losses were averaging $388,000. The second half saw a bit of a drop to $347,000. That’s not good news since it’s
