Did you know that PIA’s company council, The PIA Partnership, has conducted nationwide research about the insurance buying preferences of small business owners? The research is encouraging because it found that small business owners strongly prefer independent insurance agents as they make choices in today’s online world. However, the results also serve as a wake-up call that agents must take steps to continue to demonstrate their value and also be more engaged online. PIA and the companies belonging to The PIA Partnership have created a public website that helps agents understand PIA’s findings. PIA members also have access to a private website containing a series of strategies and tools to help them stay ahead of online competition in commercial lines. To access the newest PIA Partnership project, Small Business Insurance & The Internet — The Voice of the Commercial Lines Customer. If you are not a PIA member and want to access all of the tools available through this program, contact us for a membership application or visit us online at www.pianational.org/header-utility-items/join/Join-PIA.

That includes the world’s largest insurers. Marsh & McLennan said last week that it is going to leave the insurance market in Russia. Aon has also suspended business activities. So has Willis Towers Watson. There are several insurance companies working in Russia. They include AIG, Allianz, Chubb, Zurich and others. Though they aren’t leaving, many are looking at options and are restricting business operations. By the time this story is published, many of those listed may be exiting the country as well. Marsh & McLennan CEO Dan Glaser said it is going to “transfer ownership of our Russian businesses to local management who will operate independently in the Russian market.”

Aon has totally suspended operations and placed its staff on paid leave. Allianz has over 1,200 employees in Russia and says it is “prepared for all operational and financial outcomes, including market reactions, business continuity and adaptability, and readiness to comply with emerging sanctions and regulations. The situation and its implications are changing rapidly, and we continue to monitor them.” Zurich condemned the invasion and — while not stopping operations — said it is “fully complying with applicable sanctions and has stopped renewing contracts or underwriting new business with domestic customers in Russia.” Sources: Business Insurance and Business Insurance

TOP STORIES • 30% pop a treat in the mouth (probably for fish, too)

Is that what we ought to be doing? Dr. Jules Benson — Nationwide’s chief veterinary officer — says maybe not. We could be stressing out our pets and causing them some sort of separation anxiety. Benson says it might be better to just ignore them and walk out of the house.

PETS & PEOPLE

Goodbye is a Pet Stressor Those with pets usually add some sort of routine when they leave the house for work or for fun. It’s added in with the to-dos. Lights off? Check. Electronics turned off? Yep. Door locked? Got it. Then there’s the goodbye to Fido or Sylvester the cat, or both. A study recently done by Nationwide suggests that’s what 87% of us are doing. Of all the age groups, the born between 1997 and 2012, Generation Z — at 94% — are saying goodbye like that the most.

When we say goodbye: • 65% give the pet a pet • 40% will kiss their dog or cat goodbye (no info here on fish) • 42% just say goodbye (probably reality for fish) • 33% play with them before leaving

“If a pet is suffering from separation anxiety, performing a specific, ritual ‘goodbye’ behavior with them can trigger or heighten their fearful behavior,” Benson said. “The best course is to consult your veterinarian about ways you to treat a pet’s separation anxiety, which will likely include behavior modification training focused on when pet parents leave the house.” For a dog that anxiety can end up with whining and pacing or accidents in the house, or it can lead to destructive or aggressive behavior.

That’s where Benson points to the accuracy of why a goodbye ought to be done differently. • 33% of pet owners say their pets suffer from separation anxiety • 12% picked up a web cam to spy on their pets

But is it just the pet that suffers? Maybe not: • 40% of those surveyed say they suffer anxiety when separated from their pets Source: Nationwide

LONG HOURS INCREASING Before COVID working longer hours was on the rise. COVID sent many of us home and our employers allowed us to work from there. Longer work hours rose some more. The Occupational Safety and Health Administration (OSHA) says about 9% of us work at least 55 hours a week. That’s a lot of hours!

OSHA says — what most of us already know — longer hours can lead to fatigue and stress both physically and mentally.

FATIGUE CAN CAUSE: Sleepiness Irritability Poor decision making Concentration issues Memory issues Lack of motivation

April 2022 | Main Street Industry News | www.pianeia.com | 12

TOP STORIES Fatigue — says OSHA — also can lead to physical ailments like heart disease and musculoskeletal disorders. Depression and poor diet habits can follow. If you’re fatigued, you’re also more prone to illness or injury. The World Health Organization (WHO) did a study and found between 2000 and 2016, there was a 29% jump in deaths from stroke and heart disease. WHO tied it to longer working hours. The organization says if you work 55 hours or more, you have a 35% higher possibility of a stroke and a 17% higher chance of dying from heart disease than someone working a normal 8am to 5pm shift and 40-hour week.

OSHA SUGGESTS THAT EMPLOYERS: 1. Allow more frequent breaks 2. Address staffing issues that require longer hours 3. Improve lighting to help employees stay alert 4. Adjust room temperatures 5. Train employees on the hazards found when working too many hours Source: PropertyCasualty360.com

Those working longer hours tend to be 2.3 times more likely to have a car crash, and they’re 5.9 times more likely to have a near miss. Matt Zender is Senior Vice President and Workers’ Compensation Product Manager for AmTrust Financial Services. He has some good suggestions if you’re one of those working 55 hours or more a week.

HELP YOURSELF BY: 1. Try to get 7 to 9 hours of uninterrupted sleep a night 2. Get a daily sleep schedule where you go to sleep and wake up at the same time 3. Have a comfortable, quiet sleep environment, something cool and dark 4. Get more exercise 5. Eat well Zender also says if you’re one of those working longer and longer hours, you need to take some action to protect yourself.

WOMEN & INSURANCE AGENCY OWNERSHIP Just 31% are Owners

The report is titled The State of Women in Independent Insurance Agencies. It was authored by Liberty Mutual and Safeco and checked in with 374 agencies. It found that close to 60% of the people employed in insurance agencies are women.

On the positive side, many who replied to the survey said they’ve seen a lot of changes in the industry in recent years. Of the women who replied to the survey, 70% say their efforts are being better recognized by leadership. Just 30% don’t see it that way.

However, just 31% are owners and principals.

On the negative side, that 70% say they’ve had to work harder for that recognition than their male peers.

The two insurers also noted that women who are agents earn about 67 cents for every dollar a man earns. That gap — the report notes — is even greater for women of color. Some women interviewed by the two companies noted men begin their careers in sales but women have to work up to that position in support roles.

Another positive is 80% of respondents saying insurance provides them with a great amount of flexibility and gives them the life and work balance they seek. That flexibility is one of the reasons many women who were surveyed will recommend insurance as a career. Source: Digital Insurance

INSURANCE RATES: Things are shifting After several years of renewal increases in most lines of insurance, four lines — commercial auto, general liability, commercial property and umbrella — saw declines in renewal rates last month.

Work comp continues to lose ground but the decrease is an increase over the drop in January. The renewal rates for workers’ compensation fell 0.95% in February which is down from the 1.26% drop the month before.

That news comes from Ivans Insurance Services.

A different report shows a different picture at the end of last year. Willis Towers Watson said, on average, commercial insurance prices rose over 7% in the fourth quarter of 2021 when compared to 2020.

The same report notes that two lines — workers’ compensation (surprise there) and business owners’ policy — saw increases. BOP rates jumped 5.41% in February. That’s up 5.28% over January’s rates.

The largest increase was in professional liability. Source: Business Insurance

PIA NATIONAL AND ITS NEW CYBER ASSESSMENT PROGRAM The PIA wants our members to be prepared. That’s why want to introduce you to PIA National’s Cyber Assessment Program. Data compromises by bad guy hackers grew 68% from 2020 to 2021. Sadly, some agencies think they’re too small to be a bother to hackers.

While the entire process typically takes 7-10 days, it takes very little staff time. And the time you do invest includes a consultation after the report is delivered.

If that’s what you’re thinking, then you’re wrong. You are not too small. According to a report by Accenture, 43% of cyberattacks are aimed at small businesses, but only 14% are prepared to defend themselves.

In addition to a detailed analyses of your agency’s unique cyber weaknesses, the assessment has tools to turn recommendations into action. This includes tools to help your existing IT service — if you have one — and resource information on more advanced services and tools to support in-house or outside IT services.

Most of you are small businesses and you need to make sure you are safe, and that your client and financial information is safe. That leads us back to PIA National’s new Cyber Assessment program.

The assessment also offers an analysis of your agency's vendor user agreements, agency and vendor breaches, and detailed mitigation recommendations. All of this is done in an easily understood, non-technical format.

It will give you a very useful, and very important, report on your security systems and practices.

The one-time cost is $549. While that may seem a steep price, it is a significant savings over going it alone and ending up with a very costly cyber breach.

If there are gaps, or problems with your security system, the report will show you ways to make your system secure. That information, and the plan you implement, will help you meet the goals of the Legislatures who want proof that you are prepared for a cyber attack, and that the personal information of your clients is secure. The program was developed by longtime PIA advocate Thomas H. Wetzel & Associates. The detailed assessment is a 4-step process starting with a 15-minute call to answer your basic questions and concerns about cyber security.

You can purchase a cyber assessment policy from us and you can sell the same policy to your clients for a nice commission of 12.5%. Here is a link to give you more information: Cyber Risk Assessment Program Sources: PIA Western Alliance Cyber Risk Assessment Program Winning@Cybersecurity Defense

GOOD & NOT SO SURPRISING NEWS Consumers Prefer Buying Home and Auto Locally Duck Creek Technologies talked with people considering an auto or a homeowners policy purchase. It found — no surprise — that people prefer working locally to pick up that insurance. Close to half looking at homeowners or business insurance want an agent from an agency, and 35% are looking for a broker. Just 35% want to buy directly from an insurer. When it comes to autos and motorcycles, 59% favor working locally with an agent or an agency. Just 28% work through a broker and — sadly — 39% prefer to go direct to an insurer. One complaint heard very loudly by Duck Creek is how often insurers and agents, brokers, etc. do NOT communicate with them. Unless it’s filing a claim, 32% don’t hear from insurers at all. This is especially true of 35% of consumers buying homeowners insurance. Just 11% have communication a couple of times annually and 29% only hear from their insurer at renewal time. The good news is that 69% believe their insurer — though it doesn’t communicate with them — cares about them. Source: PropertyCasualty360.com

WORKING REMOTELY Is it losing its luster? Apartment List — the free service to help people find apartments — has done a study of working remotely. COVID has changed work, and where we work from, and the survey finds that working remotely is now deeply ingrained in business, our economy and our society. The study noted that in April of 2020, a majority of us — 51% — were working from home half the time. In December of 2020 that figure fell to 44%. A year later in April of 2021 the study’s figures show that 56% of the remote workers were working from home exclusively. That compares to 47% in December of the same year. Though the number dropped a bit, it appears — Apartment List says — that remote work has firmly entrenched itself into the U.S. economy. Of those working at home exclusively, Apartment List’s April of 2021 survey found 77% will be able to do so permanently. It’s what their companies want. That number grew a point to 78% in December of last year. The survey also noted that “hybrid” arrangements are also gaining in popularity with employees and employers. The April of 2021 survey found 40% of workers expected their employers to let them work in some sort of hybrid situation.

The number expecting full time remote work fell in December of 2021 to 33% but employees expecting something of a hybrid work system rose to 45%. However, as it stood in December, 40% of the nation’s workforce were still working from home. Apartment List’s December survey also found all generations liking the idea of working remotely. Baby boomers like remote work the best at 62% while 54% of Generation X would like to work from home. Just over half of millennial workers want to work remotely. Generation Z is the only generation that isn’t all that excited about working from home. The survey found just 36% of that generation found remote work extremely desirable. Gene Galligan Insurance Agency Monroe, LA

I AM PIA. GENE GALLIGAN had all of his carriers exit the market after a catastrophic hailstorm. He went to a PIA meeting. His fellow agents heard about his plight and spoke with a carrier rep who appointed Gene’s agency the same day. Twenty-four years later, he’s still in business.
