We live in a society that encourages people to be themselves. But when people are themselves, others quickly resort to judgement when it doesn’t match with their idealistic ideas. People try to tear others down for being “peculiar” and “odd” rather than trying to understand and befriend them.

Throughout this month, I have learned that being peculiar makes people special. I think having different opinions is apart of life. We couldn’t all have the same ideas, viewpoints or personalities or life would be repetitive and dull. We need those people: peculiar, odd and unique.

After being at South for four years, you learn that their is a place for everyone. Everyone has their own thing and talent. This weekend South’s Drama Department is putting on a performance of a lifetime (pg. 5) and Black Student Union is celebrating a month of Black History (pg. 8). People are celebrating what makes them, them and that is something amazing.

That should be done more. People should celebrate their differences rather than bring others down. Ponder this while you’re reading this month’s issue and enjoy.

LET FREEDOM RING A look inside Black History Month and what it means to the students of PHS

T

he month of February is filled with love and romance, but that’s only one day. The whole month has a much larger purpose, much larger than a cheesy holiday: Black History Month.

Black History Month is a time in February to recognize the AfricanAmericans who went through hell and back in order to be free and fought for others who have been treated badly by other people. Not only does this month recognize the importance of the past African-Americans, but shows the present generation of African-Americans that anything is possible when you put your mind to it, whether that is something as simple as doing well on a test or something more complex like fighting for your rights or freedom.

“It is part of countries history, and I respect that it gets a whole month rather than just a day and I think it should be recognized more .” said Some Stuhlsatz, Black Student Union sponsor.

Black History Month may be more important to some than others, but it is a time to think; think of how you are able to attend a public school, able to go to the same bathroom as others, or being able to share the same bus.

Ruby Bridges, a six year old at the time, was the first African-American girl to go to an all white school. She had to be escorted by her mother and different policemen in order to make it safely to the school doors. She was only trying to get her education.

At South, there is club call Black Student Union (BSU) that focuses on the importance of Black history and the different ways to embrace the AfricanAmerican heritage and appreciate

where they come from as well as putting a voice out into the halls of South for African-American culture.

“Because we are a minority, it is crucial that we have this group to not only educate black student about their history, but also they have a group to be themselves and not feel judged,” said Adrian Washington, junior.

With this month comes important figures that are recognized for their heroic acts. Important figures include; Rosa Parks, Martin Luther King Jr., Harriet Tubman and many more. These human beings were driven to go and fight for what is right. Rosa Parks took a stand by not standing when asked to leave her seat on the bus, Martin Luther King Jr. marched a peaceful protest with millions of people following him behind, Harriet Tubman created the underground railroad to help free slaves that were trying to escape, and many more important figures that did more for the country than just marching for freedom.

Black History Month means something different to everyone, the members of BSU have their own opinions on what Black History Month means to them .

“I wish Black History Month was a bigger deal. I don’t really see any change from the other months, and it shouldn’t be like that,” said Isaiah McGilchrist, senior. “We should talk about it more in our classes at school.”

By: garrett osborn What if I told you that in 2010, a man bought two pizzas for 11,333 Bitcoin. Can you guess what those two pizzas, and bitcoin are worth now? $170 million.

But how? Crypto Currencies.

You’ve probably heard about Bitcoin by now, and the unimaginable returns and money that’s being made. How do people get it? How does it have value? How did it go from under a dollar to valued over $15,000 per coin?

Bitcoin is a form of cryptocurrency. A cryptocurrency is a form of digital asset, that uses cryptography to secure it’s transactions. The primary difference seen in all cryptocurrencies is the fact that transactions involve no middle man--no banks--which has the government, and clearly the financial industry in a tailspin, figuring out how to regulate all of it.

Bitcoin has been around for almost a decade, but only recently gained momentum, roaring to thousands of dollars per coin in 2017. Before Bitcoin became as common, and renowned as it is, the primary use for it was on the deep web where people could make illegal purchases anonymously. Now, large companies like Amazon and Tesla are accepting it as form of payment for their products.

So how rich are people getting from these crypto currencies? Well you heard the story above about how someone bought two pizzas that now would be worth $170 million. Or how about the

Ripple? It is another cryptocurrency that, had you put $100 into, It would now be worth $35,000.

And if you had gotten in way back in 2009 when Bitcoin was below a penny, $100 could now be worth nearly $300 million. A month ago, that number was over half a billion dollars, but due to recent pullbacks, the updated figure is $300 million.

Under the surface, yes, a lot of people are getting very very rich; however, if you dig even deeper, fortunes are being made and lost literally within a matter of days and weeks. The fear and psychology of average people seeing overnight fortunes being made creates the fear of missing out. This makes people buy, and invest impulsively leading to massive losses that they couldn’t afford.

Within the last month, Bitcoin went from $20,000 per coin down to $8,867 per coin at press time. So yes, a lot of people have lost a lot of money within the last month, and some have made a lot on the way down.

Some advice if you consider getting into this stuff: learn about every angle before you even think about putting in real money.

Don’t pull the trigger based on the fear of missing out, that is what kills people in the markets. The fear of missing out is stronger than the excitement of potential gain, and that fear that can lead to the demise of your money.

Imagine two sweet old ladies murdering 12 innocent people and burying them in their basement. You don’t have to imagine that if you come see South’s production of “Arsenic and Old Lace.”

The place: Brooklyn. The year: 1942. Mortimer Brewster (played

by Winston Penrod, junior) is living the perfect life; he works a steady job for a New York newspaper and has just been engaged to Elaine (played by Caroline Bennett, sophomore). But everything changes when he finds a dead body in the window seat of his aunt’s home.

Further investigation leads him to realize that his aunts, Abby and Martha Brewster, (played by Anna Lettera, senior, and Meghan Pate, junior), not only killed the man in the window seat, but also 11 other people.

Follow Mortimer Brewster in his hilarious struggle to keep his aunt’s secret stowed in the basement, away from the police, and see South’s performance of “Arsenic and Old Lace” on Feb. 8, 9and 10.

When Jeff Sessions announced that he was pulling the barrier which gave states with legal marijuana safety from federal government prosecution, he took the marijuana world by storm.

As more and more states begin to legalize marijuana, progress is being pushed back because of the scare Jeff Sessions caused. Without protection from the state government, which is now disbanded, marijuana dispensaries are having second thoughts.

While this news seems to be an obvious setback for the legalization of marijuana at a state level, many think that it could help with the legalization of marijuana at a federal level.

“I think that since there is so much backlash from his decision that there will be a big push for a resolve. This means we could see the legalization of marijuana federally to eliminate the disagreement between state and federal government,” said Jakob Lebar, junior.

The dreams of pot enthusiasts are torn apart by the government’s continuing vendetta against marijuana.

“I hate that there is still a war on drugs after all the progress we thought we’ve made,” said Ava Kinsland, senior.

While there might still very well be a war on drugs, an idea is being passed around that Jeff Sessions has made this recent decision to penalize and scare California. The justification behind this is that, one, California just legalized the sale of recreational marijuana, and two, California has been disobeying federal laws; for example, their sanctuary state law.

“I think marijuana should be legal everywhere in the United States.

I think it’s well known nowadays that it is far from harmful especially when you compare it to some drugs that are legal like alcohol,” said CJ Canzoneri, junior.

Whether or not there is actually prosecution of marijuana dispensaries in California, Jeff Sessions certainly is making anyone looking to get into the business of weed think twice.

This is something that has gained Downtown Parkville positive attention.

“I go down there almost every day after school and it is just an amazing place to hang out with people. It also brings a lot of good business to smaller businesses which is always a plus,” said Zack Cockrill, senior.

Mike Nelson has coached his final games with the freshman boys basketball team

T

hose who don’t personally know Nelson you have probably heard his voice screeching through the halls from the small gym after school or heard stories about him jumping on the desks or accidentally lighting kids on fire in his all but normal classes.

“I remember freshman year my favorite class was Mr. Nelson’s World History class because he always gave me something to tell my friends in the hallway, whether that was getting into battle formations or shooting a catapult on the football field.” said Gavin Redman, senior.

Mike Nelson, or as many refer to him, Coach Nelson, is saying his final goodbyes this year after an amazing career at South. Since starting his career at South in 1998 he has won over 400 freshman basketball games, which is very rare and is the current record for games won at South.

Along his unbelievable journey he has influenced and

impacted countless amounts of students, whether that’s on or off the court.

“I had Mr. Nelson’s philosophy class as a freshman and that is basically a senior class but with his help, he made sure no one was left behind. He taught the material in a way that the entirety of the class could understand and made it really interesting and relatable to our lives,”

said Kate Eischens, senior.

Nelson is the perfect coach for freshman because he teaches valuable lessons such as being accountable, pushing yourself to reach new heights, how to be a team player and to believe that you are tougher than you ever thought possible, according to his players.

It has been a real rite of passage to play for Nelson ever since the school started. He develops young men to help make the tricky switch from middle school to high school.

Nelson cares for and fights for his players, and in return, his players are passionate about how they feel for him.

“Mr. Nelson is very encouraging towards me, I started on the B team earlier this year but with his support I finally earned a spot on the A team,” said Matt Riekhof, freshman.

South celebrated the retirement of Coach Nelson at the freshman home game versus Staley on Jan. 5. The Rage Cage, pep band and over 70 former players and alumni made it to the game. Nelson has to truly be a special person to make that big of an impact on so many people’s lives.

“My freshman basketball team made it our number one priority to make it to Coach Nelson’s special night,” said Mitch Henderson, a 2016 PHS grad. “To hear his voice ring out in the gym one last time with all of us together from so many different years was awesome.”

Next year, Nelson will leave behind his fellow freshman coach, Russ McDaniels.

“I’ve been coaching with Mike for a long time. I have seen his kids grow up and now he is seeing my kids grow up,” said McDaniels. “It will be tough with him not by my side next year.”

Our generation spends more time connected to the internet, watching video content, and consuming media than any past generation. We are the generation that fuels media monsters and machines like Netflix, Hulu, Disney, Fox and Marvel.

The Marvel franchise started with the first X-Men movies from Fox. Next came “Spiderman” movies (Tobey Maguire adaption) from Sony. Then came the Avengers Universe which started with “Ironman”.

The unfortunate part of Marvel Comics being turned into movies is the split ownership of characters: Sony owns Spiderman, Fox owns X-Men, as well as Fantastic Four, and Disney owns the rest of Marvel studios.

For $52.4 billion there is a possibility of all Marvel characters being owned under one roof again with Disney announcing its intent to acquire Fox. The deal could be up to $66.1 billion, with Disney picking up $13.7 billion of debt from Fox. What exactly does the merge mean for the Marvel movies, though?

According to Vox.com, there are a lot of new possibilities opening up.

“I hope Joss Whedon makes the Avengers fight the X-Men,” says Timothy Kruse, junior.

While Fox has great story lines and formulas, their timelines have been known to be messy. Many hope that the merge will create clearer timelines throughout Marvel, and that the risks taken by Fox on storylines will continue.

Because Marvel has never cinematically united under one entity, only half of the story has been told. “Avengers: Infinity War” is expected to be a great movie but without the X-Men, the storylines are missing a lot of original comic book characters that are essential to this story.

Besides team ups with these characters, there may also be new romances from a few of the characters after the companies merge. This could mean

reboots for Fantastic Four, X-Men, possible crossover movies between teams, versus movies between character or teams, or even new teams being born into the Marvel cinematic universe.

Another major part of the merge is Disney’s attempt to build a streaming service like Netflix, Hulu, and Amazon Prime instant video. After 2019, all Disney and Fox films and TV shows will be available on their own single streaming service. Hulu is said to have the possibility of becoming Disney’s own streaming service because it and Fox are already part owners.

According to Recode.net, this can go one of three ways. Either Comcast will make a case to the Justice Department keeping Disney from making any major changes to Hulu because one third of viewership is technically owned by Comcast, which will probably lead to Disney selling the rest of Hulu to comcast causing Disney to start from scratch.

Another possibility is asking the Justice Department to take another look at the acquisition between Fox and Disney forcing a sale of Hulu which would be Comcast selling its 30 percent stock to Disney.

The final option, which most people seem to resist the most is Disney letting Hulu run its course until all contracts are up and shutting Hulu down for good.

“I would rather have Comcast take over because otherwise I don’t know how I would be able to watch my favorite NBC shows like ‘This is Us.:” It would be best of both worlds because disney would be separate and people could watch both,” said Claire Hoy, sophomore.

No matter what happens because of this merge, be assured that the media machines of the 21st century will never look the same. But, if the acquisition doesn’t go through, we will be hoping the two major media monopolies continue to create great films that we all love.

The sex education system and how HPV is the leading sexually transmitted disease in America

Control (CDC) find in their latest census that 79 million Americans are infected, and about 14 million people become newly diagnosed every year. But this isn’t just some old people disease, most of those 79 million are your age, and many more have no idea that they have contracted or carry the virus.

HPV is not AIDS. This virus has no relation to the HIV virus in any way, and yet most people don’t know the difference between them. HPV is a virus that you can have for your entire life, and it may show no symptoms. You may never know you even had it, and in most cases, it goes away on its own.

So why do you need to know about a virus that usually shows no symptoms and resolves on its own? Because in the cases that this virus doesn’t go away, it can kill you. Because if you are sexually active, you can spread it to any partner.

HPV in women and girls can lead to oropharyngeal cancer, which is cancer of the throat and tonsils, among others. In the cases of women, cervical cancer can develop and in those cases, one fourth of patients die, even with screening and treatment of the cancer. In men, HPV can cause cancer of your entire genital area, and oropharyngeal cancer is a risk for men as well.

Luckily, there’s an incredibly simple fix to this entire virus. Vaccination. Most vaccines are recommended for the ages of 11 and 12, with follow-up vaccines

in your 20s. Vaccinating is not a hoax, or some government trick to waste your parents money. Vaccination against HPV is the best way to protect yourself against the virus.

Danielle Beaubien, senior, learned about this virus when she was young due to medical professionals in her family, but has found that a lot of teenagers don’t even know what it is.

“I had to press to get vaccinated because my parents weren’t entirely convinced. I learned about the virus from my older sister a long time ago, but a lot of other people have no idea what it is,” said Beaubien.

In a survey of three classrooms at South, 14 out of 78 students knew what Human Papillomavirus was. While this is not representative of South’s entire student body, it is just one sign that this virus is not properly represented and many people are not informed of the virus.

If you insist on not getting vaccinated, or your parents aren’t sure about it, you need to be aware of the virus. Condoms do not cover all of the affected areas. Monogamy does not fully protect you. If you don’t take action against this infection, when it is something that you have the complete ability to do, you are negligent to the situation, and you are neglecting the safety of any partner that you involve yourself with.

Students at South talk about being bombarded by the media may not be a Intercourse. That word that you hear

every day, or even every week. But innuendos of sex are so overused in media that society almost sees it as normal, or not something to be taken so seriously.

“I just think it’s [sex is] so talked about and portrayed in nonchalant ways, that it’s become mainstream,” said Wyatt Miller, senior.

According to research from the University of Georgia, the percent of ads using sex to sell products rose from 15 percent in 1983 to 27 percent by 2003.

Even though sex may have become a normal part of the culture, some people view intercourse as sacred, and choose to refrain from sex until a certain time comes.

Anna Hermelink, a senior at South, has chosen this path and plans to stay abstinent until marriage.

When asked why, Hermelink said, “Honestly, it’s kinda just my moral compass. I don’t really have any business doing it yet. I don’t have a boyfriend, but even if I did it’s just not a priority.

Because to me, [sex is] kind of a big deal.”

Despite abstinence being a personal choice, waiting for sex in a modern world can have some backlash.

“I think that the judgement off of it is really intense... I think that when you say you’re a 17-year-old high schooler or an 18-year-old high schooler and you haven’t ever done anything of that nature, people can get very, ‘well why haven’t you? What’s stopping you?

You’re so old school.’ And all that kind of stuff comes at you. It’s not necessarily that everyone does that, but the way that people choose to look at you is a little different because they view you as a prude,” said Sophie Granger, senior.

So why is there such a prejudice against abstinence?

“It’s against what everyone thinks is the norm,” said Jackson Minor, junior.

Minor’s assumption may be correct.

According to the study, Trends in Premarital Sex in the United States, 1954-2003 by Lawrence B. Finer, young people in the United States, on

average, have sex for the first time around age 17, but do not marry until their mid-20s.

Due to the modern day safe sex advertisements that started in the ‘80s, the previous statistic may not seem shocking.

But surprisingly enough, that can fact apply to decades as early as the ‘40s.

According to the same study by Finer, nearly nine in 10 women had sex before marriage in the 1940s, despite the fact that there was such a strong stigma against premarital sex in the early 1900s. Some working class women were even jailed for the offense of casual sex, according to Delinquent Daughters: Protecting and Policing Adolescent Female Sexuality in the United States, 1885–1920, by Mary E. Odem.

One of the biggest reasons why society’s views on sex have changed is because we see it all around us: in magazines, on television, in the news, online, even in music. The American consumer is daily barraged with sensual and arousing advertisements of sex.

“I think there is a lot of visual stimulus that take a toll on how you view it and perceive it [sex].

In movies it’s all very sensual.

So it’s all very romantic and it’s great and wonderful in that way and then you also have other aspects of it that are not as such. They’re very graphic and... in my opinion, it’s just all very animalistic. So when you see both of those kinds of things, it’s really hard to make a solid opinion on what it is and how modern day takes it and twists it into entertainment rather than the act of love,” said Granger.

You may view sex as animalistic or romantic, casual or special, but whether you know it or not your outlook on sex is shaped by the media you see and hear every day. In a world where media casually uses sex, it is important to make your own opinions without their influence.

“It’s probably something 85 percent of you guys are thinking about, or are being faced with, and let’s just talk about it,” said Angie Sharp, counseling.

According to a Twitter poll conducted by The View, 44 percent of students at South (approximately 792 students) right now are getting most of their sexual education from online sources, since they either don’t feel comfortable talking to their parents, or their family isn’t open to that topic. Even those who took a health class are scared to ask questions.

“I hate asking questions, like feeling dumb that kind of thing, so I kinda just went along with whatever was happening,” said Kate Hunter, junior.

Talking about sex has always been awkward for most people, and going to parents or teachers to ask questions seems out of the question for some; but how else will you learn reliable information?

“Students will laugh about it and be immature about it, and teachers, they also don’t want to get into that conversation with their students, they don’t want to have that relationship with students. But I think it’s needed, because, like me, not everybody’s parents talk to them about that kind of stuff; I wish I was more educated than I was,” said Hunter.

In 2014, only 20 states, including Missouri, required that sex and/or HIV education must be medically, factually or technically accurate. That same year, 88 percent of schools nationwide allowed parents to exempt their kids from the sex ed course, according to the Guttmacher Institute.

“I think that’s a scary thing because you know how are they going to be safe and how are they gonna know what’s the right thing to do..sex isn’t just whatever...when you talk about it with your friends, you kind of make it seem that way,” said Meg Fausz, junior. “And so when you don’t have a class about it to learn how serious it actually is, then that’s kinda your mindset going into it...they don’t know how to protect themselves, they don’t know how serious it is and... that’s kinda what leads to things like teen pregnancy, STDs and everything.”

Educating high school students about contraceptives and sexual instruction has gone down since 2006 while the method of saying no to sex and avoidance of birth control practice, also known as abstinence-only education, has gone up in recent years, according to Guttmacher institute. Yet, 86 percent of South, according to a Twitter poll, doesn’t think that abstinence-only education is beneficial.

“I think it’s effective for some. I think it’s different avenues for each person, and you know it’s up to that person to talk to their parents and to talk to their doctors/school counselors just to figure out what’s best for them. I do think abstinence is ideally the way to go, but I understand it’s not for everybody,” said Dan Parra, health.

“I think it’s just absolutely stupid because teens are going to have sex no matter what you teach and they’re not gonna practice abstinence only. It’s just the way life is and you know kids are curious... and teaching abstinence only, there’s been studies and stuff that have shown it just increases teen pregnancy in places that teach abstinence only and it’s just not a smart thing,” said Fausz.

Since most teens talk to each other about sex instead of parents or teachers and tend to take the subject lightly, what can be an effect of the lack of seriousness and education?

“They always said yeah wear a condom, like it’s safe, STDs, all that kind of stuff, but me and my boyfriend were each other’s first, and... because neither of us had STDs... and it’s like there’s still dangers, you don’t even realize, people kinda just blow stuff off,” said Hunter.

On average, most students at South take health class around their sophomore and junior year, so what happens if you are faced with sex before you take the class, or still have holes in your knowledge?

“I think at this level, being in high school, juniors and seniors are really the ones that take health and sex ed.

I think the birds and the bees, we kind of expect them to know before they get to us and then we just tell them ways to prevent some STIs and ways to prevent being pregnant and just ways to live a healthier lifestyle and to make the right choices instead of the wrong choices,” said Parra.

South students have ideas for what they think should be improved in sex ed.

“I think that it should be reiterated in health classes, sex isn’t the only aspect of a relationship between two people and if you make it that way, it becomes unhealthy,” said Hunter.

Parra said he would make the sex ed portion of health two and a half to three weeks long in order to teach all of sex ed. He would also like to bring in guest speakers from clinics to talk about all the possible outcomes, dangers and consequences that comes along with sex.

That open dialogue translates to families at home, as well.

“I just don’t feel like I need to hide as much. Having parents who are willing to talk about things is definitely a lot easier than having parents that just kinda assume everything is alright,” said Eli Guzman, senior.

According to a Twitter poll, 70 percent of South students don’t feel like they can open up to their parents.

If a question would arise, students can always go to the nurses, and or the counselors, since they can provide reliable information.

by: Christian holferty At the end of last year, for the first time ever, rap and R&B was the most listened to genre in music. The musical tides are changing, and kids are facing the most animosity towards their music since rock and roll first emerged in the ‘50s.

In early 2017, Forbes published an article written by Danny Ross that said rock had died with Chuck Berry earlier that year and has been taken over by rap.

Anyone and their mother could tell you that rap is the most popular genre in music today, but only an idiot (Danny Ross) would say that rock is dead.

Rock, like everything else, has just changed and if you look deep enough you can even find a rock influence in rap today.

Take Post Malone, for example. He was one of the most popular musicians of 2017. Stoney was considered a rap album, but Post Malone does not consider himself a rapper. When XXL, a rap magazine, asked to feature him in their freshman class (a list of up and coming rappers) he declined, stating he, “wasn’t paying attention to hip-hop so much, he was going in more of a rock/pop/country direction.”

This is evident in most of his music. In “Hollywood Dreams Come Down” he samples “Dreams” by Fleetwood Mac. “Feeling Whitney” is a slow, acoustic ballad that is reminiscent of Bob Dylan, who is one of his biggest inspirations. Not to mention that at a lot of his concerts, he often covers Nirvana or some sort of rock song at least once.

This isn’t the only time that someone known for rapping dabbles in rock or some other genre. Just a few months ago, Young Thug made an album with a couple country songs, predominantly “Family Don’t

Matter/.” Lil Wayne’s album, “Rebirth,” was labelled a ROCK album. Kid Cudi has been dabbling in rock ever since Man on the Moon Two. Now, I’m not saying that Young Thug, Kid Cudi, or Lil Wayne aren’t rappers; they obviously are. I’m just saying that they have released popular music that fell under more genres than just rap.

I’d actually argue that rock is the opposite of dying. I’d go so far to say that rock is making a resurgence. Nathaniel Rateliff and the Night Sweats have been around since 2013. So far they haven’t made a very big splash on the radio waves but they have a classic ‘70s sound.

Greta Van Fleet, a band with guys not much older than us, are releasing music that sound like unreleased Led Zeppelin tracks. The Marcus King band has a southern rock/jazzy improv sound reminiscent of the Allman Brothers. Close your eyes while you listen to Leon Bridges, and you could swear his music is from the ‘50s. Spoiler alert: he’s 26.

There are also musicians with this nostalgic sound that have hit the mainstream. Chris Stapleton is the best southern rocker I’ve heard in a looooong time. Alabama Shakes is the best female led rock band since Blondie. I’d even say Harry Styles is a rocker now. Have you heard his solo album? It was good. Like, surprisingly good.

In short, rock is not dead. It is just changing, like everything else in life. In some ways it’s going back; in some ways it’s blending with other genres and moving forward. It’s cemented itself in western culture. And unless nuclear war breaks out and a wave of communism engulfs our country, then it will live on forever.

Are you ever scrolling through your Snapchat stories and see five people posting a victory royale on their story? Well it’s because Fortnite is more than just a game. For some it’s a lifestyle.

Many students have recently gotten addicted to this game and can’t seem to put it down or stop posting their wins on social media.

If you’ve never played before, it is best to download on a game system such as a PS4 or Xbox. When you first start the game, you are on a bus with 100 players and you drop somewhere on the map to get guns and materials.

As the game progresses the map starts to shrink and the rest of the map is consumed in the storm. If you don’t make it out of the storm in time, the storm takes damage from your health. It is exactly like “Hunger Games” and the last one alive is the winner.

Garrett Lee, sophomore, has been a fan of this game ever since it came out and has devoted a lot of hours into the game.

“I like the strategy of the game. I like that it is different and that you can build in the game,” said Lee. When asked his strategy when playing he said, “I always dropped at Anarchy Acres, gets wood in case I need to build and then heads to the circle.”

Lee plays about three times a week and really likes how it separates itself from other games.

Max Rosario, sophomore, has also devoted a lot of his free time into Fortnite. He said he enjoys the suspense factor of the game and also enjoys to play with his friends rather than himself because he can talk to people and doesn’t get as stressed.

He had tips for new players.

Rosario said, “Learn how to build and get in a lot of gunfights because building is very important and getting in gunfights will make you better a lot faster.”

However, there are also people that don’t enjoy the game.

Cami Grant, sophomore, recently posted on her story for everyone to stop posting their victory royales.

She said, “It isn’t relevant to me and I just see it multiple times a day.”

Grant has never actually played the game but has watched people play and was not impressed. She believes people should stop wasting their time playing video games and spend it doing school work or the sports or activities that they are involved in.

There is a huge new update that has changed a lot of things in the game. The biggest thing that has happened is that there are several new places on the map that you can land now, so expect more stories of victory royales.

High School is full of relationships: the athletes, the inseparables, the ones who know nothing but PDA, the couples who are always on-and-off again and then the sweethearts, the ones who last. Meet some of South’s most diverse couples.

f you’re in a relationship or not, it is easy to agree it would be nice to get pampered on Valentine’s Day. However, no two relationships are the same, making Valentine’s Day mean something completely different to everyone.

Haylee Cleveland, senior, and her boyfriend from Germany, Josef Magin, are not exactly what you’d call a typical high school couple.

They have been together for seven months so they have not yet spent Valentine’s Day together and might not even get to. In fact, they tend to only see each other every few months. Because Magin lives in Germany, they have to battle the time difference, too.

Cleveland said, “When he’s getting ready for school, I’m going to bed.”

Most couples would find this very difficult but Cleveland and Magin have learned to make do and even found a way to Skype on the weekends.

Trezdon Davis, junior, and Eli Bussey, sophomore, are the opposite of any distance. They spend close to every day with each other and even “act like best friends.”

Davis said, “You should date someone who you can easily consider your best friend as well.”

Sophomores Taylor Brown and Cameron Gillespie have been showing the sophomore class what a real relationship looks like for over two years now. They sound like a perfect couple but, like any others, they struggle to hangout during the week with busy schedules and resort to weekends. What is the secret to keeping a long, healthy relationship like theirs?

Gillespie said, “Knowing when to make it official is a special feeling and then you just know.”

Danny Nitzel, senior, and Nadya McCullough, sophomore, just recently made things official. Not only are they a new couple but also two years apart. They don’t have any future plans besides growing their relationship and enjoying eachothers company every day.

When it comes to making things official, Nitzel said, “It’s about the connection you share.”

No matter what the age, distance, or interests between the different couples at South, it is clear to see that there is a great diversity of relationships at South, proving love exists in many forms.

With music streaming on the rise, students have a lot of choices when it comes to which service they use

ap, pop, hip hop, country - we all have a favorite. About 38 percent of students polled said that they listen to music for at least four hours a day. With such a significant portion of the day being taken up by music, people are picky when it comes to the service they use.

There is a plethora of platforms to choose from, and each with their own advantages and drawbacks. 62.5 percent of students polled responded that their favorite music platform is Spotify. Officially launched in 2008, the popular music service has 140 million users and boasts a library of about 30 million songs.

Seth Dunfield, senior, said, “I like Spotify because if I can listen to a specific artist, make playlists, and on the free computer version, you can choose songs to listen to.”

Spotify has not avoided controversy, however, with notable artists such as Taylor Swift withdrawing their entire discography from the platform. This is from what has been described as unsustainable compensation due to the availability of music on the free version.

Put simply, some artists feel that they aren’t being fairly paid for the music they put out because of the fixed price model Spotify utilizes.

Another popular music service is YouTube Music. Established in just 2015, the site has an abundance of songs to listen to.

Having a library as broad as the entire collection of YouTube, one can see the benefits of this platform.

“I listen to a lot of artists that only post to YouTube. A lot of stuff isn’t on Spotify, but everything is on Youtube,” said Alivia Haltom, senior.

Following Spotify with 25 percent of the votes, students said their favorite streaming service was Apple Music. Shooting to 10 million paying subscribers in just six months, Apple music has a strong following.

However, some drawbacks of the platform would be it’s exclusiveness. It is mainly utilized on Apple products and also features some Apple Music exclusive music, such as Frank Ocean’s “Blonde.”

Dallas Sissel, senior, also known as Necromancer, has experience with being a SoundCloud musician.

“The best platform to listen to music is a tie between SoundCloud and YouTube. YouTube is good for finding beats and underground artists, and SoundCloud is good for finding more songs by a specific artist,” Sissel said.

With so many music platforms, the culture surrounding music is broadening.

Music touches everyone’s life, and listening to it has become a crucial part of the average teenager’s routine. Most teens have constant access and they definitely take advantage of it.

alentine’s Day: every single person’s worst nightmare. It’s just another reason to shove your face senseless with chicken nuggets and avoid Instagram when couples post about their endless love for one another. Right?

That’s what I thought, that is until I decided that being alone was okay. Now this wasn’t a 10 minute conversion process; it took time. It took MONTHS! I didn’t start my pursuit for happiness until I let it sink in that I was truly lonely. It’s that moment when you’re listening to too many Drake songs and you have time to comprehend how you’re actually feeling in your own solitude.

I found myself in an obscurely low time in my life, googling for answers.

Understand you’re good enough all by yourself This one’s a toughy (at least for me). However, this one is also the most important. Remind yourself you are precious in your own way and you don’t--I repeat, don’t--need the approval of others to make it certain. Being alone is truly a choice. It will take many experiences to understand what being “good enough” means, but once you do, you’ll realize how awesome you truly are.

Value others’ opinion but value your own more

Try not to ask for advice from others, unless you honestly need it. Instead, try to problem solve and ask yourself what to do. You’ll find that problems get solved a lot faster and you learn the lesson of trusting yourself.

Close your eyes in a dark room and appreciate the silence I would try to start small and increase the time with the comfort of your insanity. The world is a busy, loud place and it’s easy to forget how nice it is to just sit and enjoy your own company. If sitting in the dark sounds uncomfortable, light a candle, turn off the lights, put on music and let your thoughts roam. Let the feelings you hold yourself back from in school out and free. You’ll discover things you never knew about yourself.

“How do I handle being alone?”

It sounds dorky, but it’s the truth and I won’t hide any details, even if they seem unimportant.

Google led me to multiple sites with possible solutions to my loneliness dilemma. It was one article in particular that sparked my interest: “13 Rules for Being Alone and Being Happy About It.” I decided to make an experiment out of it. For the past four months, I have been doing all 13 suggestions to figure out which ones were a go and which ones were a no. Out of the 13 rules, I believe six of them are the key to finding happiness while being alone.

CHerish every interaction I suggest choosing an individual you’ve always wanted to get to know, contacting them over DMs or text and setting a date to grab coffee. Each week since November I have been asking a new person a week to coffee and the results have been fantastic. I ask them questions about their life. By focusing on others, you learn to appreciate those around you who you might not have gotten the chance to otherwise.

Go on dates with yourself Treat yo’ self. Go out alone. Society likes to say that many things are made for two, but I’m here to say one can be just as good! (Go to the movies, a restaurant, a park, or etc.) It might feel a little uncomfortable at first, but once you realize that what others think doesn’t matter; you are unstoppable.

My first date by myself was to Chick-Fil-A. I sat in the corner of the restaurant and people watched. It felt uncomfortable at first, but I realized after a while that no one was really paying attention to me. There was no reason to worry.

PUrsue an impractical project

What have you always wanted to change? About yourself? School? Community? Make a project out of that.

When you’re alone, you have the ability to pursue any project you want. The probability of you finishing might be low, but that’s the point of it being impractical. Take advantage of the time you have.

As you can see, being alone doesn’t suck as bad as the world makes it out to be. Since my time of being alone, I have grown and my personality has changed for the better! I have become more accepting, respectful of myself and confident. I am good

Webster’s Dictionary defines it as: 1. Courteous behavior, especially that of a man toward a woman.

2. Being a gallant or distinguished gentleman.

I happen to know that there are plenty of chivalrous men in the world today. Why? I’ve witnessed it firsthand. I’ve seen my dad open doors for women , children and the elderly.

I’ve seen my grandfather drop my grandmother off at the front door and then park the car so she didn’t have to walk in the cold.

While at my house, my friends have moved furniture when my mom and dad needed help. They weren’t asked, they simply offered to help because it was the right thing to do.

It’s sort of the moral code of ethics. Do what’s right and right will be done back to you.

But what happens when you do the honorable thing and the person you’re doing it for gets upset about it? I’ve seen a man open a door for a woman just to be told, “I can open the door by myself, I don’t need you to do it for me.” So much for good manners and being courteous.

You hear women preaching the gospel of Beyoncé, singing, “I don’t need a man to pull my chair out for me.” That leaves me questioning if women want a man’s respect anymore. Once someone bites your hand when you’ve reached out to help, the next time it’s a little harder to be so honorable.

Women who are secure in themselves are the ones who are rewarded with chivalry. With the rise of social media and apps like Snapchat, it has made it almost impossible to portray chivalry. How do you expect a man to treat a girl perfectly when he knows that she is Snapchatting eight other guys?

A girl can be in a relationship with a guy, but it doesn’t mean much when he knows that she’s in other relationships over Snapchat. They might not be physical ones, but they still affect the relationship in a negative way.

For chivalry to continue, females must respect themselves. I they don’t respect themselves, how are men supposed to respect them?

Maybe the reason we even question whether or not chivalry is still alive and well is that so many people take an act of random kindness as an insult to their own abilities. We’ve become so insecure in our own skin that we’re afraid to let anyone help us for fear that we’ll be showcased as weaker or less capable than others.

Chivalry used to be about honor and goodness. Now it seems that we’ve flipped the script and think independence means we can’t let others help us or be nice to us. There are plenty of good, honorable, chivalrous men (and women) out there. It’s time we just make kindness shine through instead of being threatened by it.

Jobs that were once reserved exclusively for men are now available and even occupied by the baddest women in the world. The concept of chivalry wasn’t concocted during the era of poodle skirts and oppression.

In the middle ages, chivalry was a conduct of code used for knights who were expected to be loyal, honest and courteous to their god, king and lady. Chivalry may not be dead, but it has undergone extreme change as has society.

Writing this article, I realized that I didn’t have a complete grasp of how chivalry fits into the modern world. Webster Dictionary defines it as an honorable and polite way of behaving, especially toward women.

I also turned to Urban Dictionary who put it in elegant, more fitting terms; “being courteous and polite without whining or asking for anything in return.”

This leads me to my first point of why chivalry has changed and become irrelevant. Any given day, at least a dozen guys bring up

something kind they did for a girl, despite the fact that no one asked to hear about it. Not too long after their brag session, complaints start rolling in because, “bruh I paid for her food and opened the door and she didn’t even wanna yanno do stuff after.”

In my eyes, and most other women’s, doing something nice like paying for dinner or walking someone to the door after a date is just simply the thing to do and is not something to be rewarded. The problem with today’s society is that everyone expects something in return for basic human decency.

Giving me your coat because it’s cold outside doesn’t entitle you to “get some” after.

The argument is not which sex is superior. Men and women are equal in society, the workplace and at home. If you feel that you should hold the door for me because you’re just a wholesome guy, go for it.

If you expect me to repay you in some way, however, feel free to just stay home.

by: BRET VANICE AND MAX GHASEMI What is better than having 10 of some of the best athletes in the world putting on a show? The NBA All-Star Game consists of the top 12 players in each conference battling it out on the court.

The argument in the past against the All-Star Game is that it’s an offensive show, it’s not competitive and there is no defensive played at all. With hopes of turning up the competitiveness and adding to the entertainment, the NBA has decided to mix up the format of the game.

This year, Steph Curry and LeBron James have chosen their teams, much like teams are picked in gym class. The players were picked from a pool of 8 starters and 14 reserve players.

Max and I decided to try out the new system and compare teams. After a rock-paper-scissors match, Max is playing the part of LeBron which also came with the first pick, instantly giving him the best two players in the world.

The Chiefs first offensive play of the season was very similar to their last but the circumstances couldn’t have been any different. The situation was totally different. It could have sent the Chiefs to New England to play the Patriots in the NFL Divisional Round.

The Chiefs always seem to let their fans down, especially in the playoffs.

In the 2013 AFC Wild Card game the Chiefs blew a 21 point halftime lead to the Colts losing 45-44. That season, the Chiefs started 9-0 and then proceeded to go on a lose five of their last seven.

They have two of the four biggest blown leads in NFL playoff history, one of them being the Titans game on Jan. 6, 2018.

The game undeniably had a lot to do with the officiating. Mike Pereira, a former referee and former Vice President of Officiating for the NFL commented on Twitter about the crew’s performance saying, “Horrible way to start the playoffs. I hate to say this but this was not a good performance by the crew. Teams and fans deserve better.”

With that being said, the Chiefs really do need to change some things in the organization to win playoff games and have more consistent seasons.

The past few years, they have had really good starts to the regular season but always fall off in the middle and start to struggle. Some think the Chiefs head coach, Andy Reid, needs to be fired.

Others like Alex Rodriguez, junior, thinks that Bob Sutton, the Chiefs defensive coordinator, needs to be let go.

“He’s getting old and slowly the defense is going down,” said Rodriguez.

However, the Chiefs came out and said they were keeping Bob Sutton as of Jan. 24. Fans were furious at the decision to keep him.

When teams fail, everyone points fingers so it’s always interesting to see who people blame. People say Andy Reid, Bob Sutton, or for a lot of fans they blame it on starting quarterback, Alex Smith.

Smith was actually a very good quarterback, with 4,000 yards passing,

28 touchdowns and only five interceptions. Not to mention that he lead the league in quarterback rating with a rating of 104.7.

Despite the season stats, Smith had people continue to blame him like Carli Burdiss, junior.

“I think they (Chiefs) failed mostly in playing too conservatively on offensive.

We could have won a lot more games if they played more aggressively on defense too. I’m not a big Alex Smith fan, so I blame most of the season on him, too. However, the whole team has things they need to work on,” said Burdiss.

The Chiefs have actually traded Alex Smith to the Washington Redskins. In return, the Chiefs got a 2018 third round draft pick and cornerback Kendall Fuller. Fuller (22) was selected in the third round of the 2016 NFL draft by Washington.

Fuller has shown a ton of potential for them being ranked the number one slot cornerback in the NFL by Pro Football Focus for the 2017 season.

The Redskins are also taking all $17 million of Smith’s contract that the Chiefs would have owed him. They could use the $17 million in free agency to fill some holes in the team.

The Chiefs are in a good spot with Patrick Mahomes stepping into Smith’s shoes, showing great potential in his week 17 win against the Broncos and during his performances in the preseason.

Dawson Owen said the Chiefs should, “Either draft a corner or middle linebacker to replace Derrick Johnson when he retires, which I believe is pretty soon. Or draft a corner and trade for a middle linebacker.”

Since Andy Reid took over, the Chiefs have only missed the playoffs one time. They are a really young team and will continue to grow. Yes, some changes need to be made but nothing that should dramatically change things because they have a winning formula that they should continue to use.

On December 5, 2017, the International Olympic Committee (IOC) announced that Russia is banned from the 2018 Winter Olympics for engaging in systemic manipulation of anti-doping rules. Only those athletes who pass strict scrutiny and are in compliance with the World Anti-Doping Agency, the world’s doping police, will be allowed to compete in Pyeongchang starting this week.

Even then, Russia’s flag will not be displayed at the opening ceremony and the Olympic Anthem will be played instead of Russia’s national anthem, if they win a gold medal. Any athletes from Russia who receive special dispensation to compete will be wearing a neutral uniform, and the official record books will forever show that Russia won zero medals at the 2018 Pyeongchang Winter Olympics according to the IOC website.

“That makes sense they got kicked out since they disobeyed the rules,” said senior Katie McWilliams. “However, they’ve been one of our top competitors for years. That will seem a little strange that they’re not in it this year.”

The 2018 Winter Olympics won’t be the same without Russia; however, South students are still looking forward to the Winter Olympics.

“Figure skating, especially the pair skating, is my favorite sport to watch. It’s really interesting to watch two people skating at the same time,” said sophomore Madison Saverino, a competitive ice skater.

Saverino and Synchronized Skating Community have tried to get synchronized skating into the Olympics for years

now; however, it’s not going very well.

“We need bigger crowd to make it happen. Not only do we need a big crowd, but another big problem is that boys and girls can be on the same team. So if there’s not an even number of guys on one team than the other team, it could be considered unfair,” she said.

The IOC added five new sports to the 2020 Summer Olympics (baseball/softball, karate, skateboarding, sports climbing and surfing).

So even though the last sport added into the Winter Olympics was snowboarding in 1998, it seems like there is a high possibility that synchronized skating could get added onto the list soon.

“I mean, there has to be more new sports that appeal to the new generation, right?” said sophomore Marika Harmon.

New events are getting added into the Olympics, while some “unpopular” Olympic sports are getting removed- like roque in 1904 or tug of war in 1920. Some says ‘it’s just how it works’, however, sophomore Gage Baska thinks differently.

“Some Olympic sports may be popular than the others, however, they are all still interesting to watch.” he said. “Every sport is interesting to watch in its own unique way, and that’s why I love watching the Olympics.”

If you are looking for something new to do this weekend, turn on your TV to your local NBC channel, and enjoy one of the 15 events planned throughout the month. You’ll find yourself sitting on the edge of your seat, if you’re a sports fan or not.

South takes pride in its athletic programs. They provide a wide range of activities that students can take part in. Few students, however, realize how much it takes to run all these activities.

Planning events, getting supplies ready for a game, many students can a credit this all to the coach, but they pass over one important aspect: the managers. Much like the stage crew of theater they work behind the scenes to make everything run smoothly.

If you are involved in athletics at South you may see these students helping at practice, and assisting players at games, but even this does not show what they do. Even the players on the teams are not fully aware of the job they do.

At the beginning of the year, Bethany Conley, sophomore, the football and girls basketball manager, will help with checking in all the equipment players need, and keeping track of it to help get it all turned in by the end of the year. Lindsey Conley, sophomore, Bethany’s sister, joined as a a basketball manager with her sister.

Q: “What does Managing mean to you?

Lindsey: “It’s not just about stats and video, but bonding with the players.”

Q: How did you start Managing?

Q: What is your relationship with the players?: Bethany: “I always call the football players my big brothers. I always say I have 60 big brothers, and they always take care of me.”

When practice or a game is not running, they are working on helping plan for practices and games. During games, they will make sure players stay hydrated, and will assist players when needed on the field. This can be much-needed in football due to the size of the game.

Lindsey also works on filming and taking stats during games.

Lindsey sees her relationship with the basketball team “like a sisterly bond” which allows her to be closer to the players that she works with.

So, midway through basketball season they still work hard to help out the South athletic program. Hopefully they will continue to contribute to the program in the years to come.
