Everyone struggles and that’s OK, nothing is wrong with asking for help. Someone is always willing to talk about what’s happening.

On the flip side, it is important to be nice to everyone because it’s hard to tell what is going on behind closed doors. Take a step back and think about what is said before it’s too late. The “jokes” that everyone knows, could be the deciding factor to end a life.

Depression has grown with the increase of social media use. According to Psycom.com, those who spend more time on social media have 2.2 times the risk of reporting eating and body image concerns, compared with their peers who spend less time on social media. Social media causes teens to face demands for time and energy that leaves them feeling drained. So much more to life exists than what we see on social media.

We all have our own roller coaster of life. Someone’s success could be the middle of your journey up hill so don’t stress if you haven’t hit the top yet.

As a society, we build a world where we only ask how people are physically, rather than mentally.

It’s a cool morning in Olathe as 1,200 people come together to stand up for mental health awareness and 800 of them line up to start the annual Speak-Up Walk. The mission of the walk is to reduce the stigma around mental health and decrease the rate of suicide and depression.

Struggling with mental health is nothing to be afraid of, we all have it.

It’s how we feel and think on a daily basis. Not only does it affect our feelings, it affects how we handle everyday situations. The smallest thing can start the slightest doubt in our heads either we aren’t good enough or we can’t do anything right.

Mental wellness is not a secret, it’s real. It needs to be talked about because it isn’t going away any time soon.

ACt or bust new kansas law recommends all students to take ACT

ACT will be recommended Skyler hughes forThe all juniors at the beginning of reporter February.

Students will take the exam during school on February 20; the assessment will be free for first time takers, any retakes will be full price.

According to The Wichita Eagle, Kansas will be the 19th state to cover the ACT exam for all juniors nationwide.

Along with the ACT exam, itself, juniors will also be able to take the ACT WorkKeys assessment, which measures workplace skills and comprehending work-related materials.

The Wichita Eagle also stated, “Every Kansas junior will have the chance to take those assessments and potentially earn the WorkKeys National Career Readiness Certificate on Feb. 21.”

Jenna Collier, junior, does not want to take it, but is being forced to.

“I don’t think kids should have to take the ACT,” Collier said. “I think it should be an option based on their career or college choices.”

Collier wants to go into cosmetology at Johnson County Community College, which does not require an ACT score for acceptance.

Mason Roseberry, junior, took the ACT to get it out of the way and have extra time to improve his score.

“It is good for people to take the test but it might not

be required for all students,” Roseberry said.

Even if he does not believe the ACT should be required, Roseberry said he believes all juniors should take the test as it cannot hurt you, it can only help.

Roseberry took it last year without much studying just to see how he would do, so he knows where he can improve his score based on his results, he said.

With the recommended ACT and all juniors taking it, some students may not get the score they want, but can always take the Accuplacer exam as a replacement test in order to take a college or concurrent class, Justin Elliott, counselor, said.

The Accuplacer is shorter and students can take individual subject tests to help improve their score in a specific area.

To take College Algebra for college credit, a student needs an ACT score of 21 or higher in the math portion.

Most community colleges do not require an ACT score, but some do require the Accuplacer test if the ACT was not taken.

But, most four year colleges require the ACT to be accepted into the school.

Elliott recommends studying for the test with ACT prep., practice tests, or study books.

“A good way to help you do better on the test is to get a good night’s sleep, eat a good breakfast, come to school early, be prepared, and don’t be frazzled,” Elliott said.

Q&A with Dani Loya, senior

Did you prep or study for the ACT? I didn’t really study, but I took ACT Prep. Because I took ACT Prep., I already understood the format and the types of questions that would be on the exam.

You’ve been accepted into KU; how do you think your ACT score applied to your acceptance?

It probably helped that I had such a high ACT score and that has led to KU sending me things about the honor program and scholarship opportunities.

Did your ACT score help you earn scholarships?

I haven’t applied for any scholarships yet, but I have looked into the ones KU offers. Right now with my GPA and ACT score , I qualify for the Chancellor scholarship of $5,000 per year.

How long does it usually take to grade the tests of one class?

Depends, one class can take around two hours.

What do you specifically look for when grading homework?

If they understood the concept. They can miss one or two of the questions, but if they miss multiple then we have to rework it. {Photo Illustration by Abby Winterschied}

The bell rings and Reporter teachers close their doors to start a new lesson.

Some students will stay involved with the class discussion and some will tune out their surroundings. Most students focus on their grades until they stress out, or are not aware of them.

Grace Upton, freshman, says her mother hates when she has a C in a class.

“She also freaks out when I have a B, so I always have to strive for A’s,” Upton said. “I study for hours when I have a test. If I have a 79% in a class,

my phone is taken away.”

Upton said a C means you’re failing, because it isn’t an average grade.

“For my biology test, I studied for six hours, and for English I studied for four hours before my test,” Upton said.

While Upton is studying for hours on end, Zach Donahue, freshman, says he studies for an hour or two, at most.

“My parents help me set my goals, but I am more of a non-studier. I try to do well on papers rather than studying a lot,” Donahue said. He works towards getting A’s on most things, but it depends on the assignment.

It is a controversial topic when asked if a C is a good grade or not, as most students have different opinions.

Karl Schmidt, Biology teacher, said he believes a C is the average grade. When learning, you need master the skill and go beyond average.

Schmidt said colleges look for students who have problem solving, creative thinking, and leadership skills.

“We have enough followers in the world, we need people that can problem solve,” Schmidt said.

Don’t worry about the grade, just try to be the best person, friend, and student everyday.

What is the most frustrating thing about grading tests?

Seeing “idk” on some questions.

What do you suggest students do to better their tests?

Obviously don’t leave a problem blank. Give something a try because I can’t give any type of correction or guidance if I don’t see where you’re at to begin with.

Any student entering the building during school hours has noticed the changes in how one can enter the school. It’s a simple process: hit the buzzer, look into the camera, wait to be let in, open the first door, walk through the ‘man trap’ and then walk through the second door.

The new entrance system, includes the “doorbell” buzzer which became effective in May. Most students, 80 percent, said the addition of the new system makes them safer, according to a Reporter survey of 146 students. Senior James Wilson said he uses the buzzer system every day because he attends a Heating, Ventilation, and Air Conditioning program every morning, and has to be buzzed in when he arrives to school after the 8 a.m. bell.

“I kind of like it,” Wilson said. “In some respects it is kind of annoying just because if there’s nobody at the front desk you have to stand out there for a couple seconds.”

Wilson said he thinks the buzzer system is a good idea for protecting the school.

there has been a tremendous push for school safety nationwide and from many concerned district parents, especially after recent school shootings.

Hines, as part of the administrative team, was charged along with the school board to find out what to do.

Junior Iranzu Garrido, a foreign-exchange student from Madrid, said she rarely sees guns in her country.

“We have [guns] but they’re for hunting.” Garrido said. “You only see guns if you’re watching a movie or if you see a policeman.”

Garrido said she had second thoughts about coming to America when she heard about the school shootings.

“People told me to go with a bulletproof vest,” Garrido said.

When she heard about the buzzer system, she said she thought it was a good idea.

For the staff in the office, the addition of the monitoring system hasn’t been too drastic.

“I don’t really have to watch it, but if it buzzes, I look up,” Athletic Secretary Missy Thompson said. Thompson said the changes in security are positive.

“I feel things are more secure,” Thompson said.

In 2016, Thompson, along with the entire school staff, had to go through ALICE training for active shooter response. Thompson said if someone appears suspicious, they deny access and contact the correct authorities, but most of the time, they recognize everyone.

Hines said safety has been a big issue in the past few years.

“There is not one singular thing a government or a school can do to protect everybody, so that leaves us all scrambling to find something to do,” Hines said.

When the office was on the south side of the building they would find parents wandering the building because they didn’t know the location of the office he said “We knew we had a security issue,” he said.

Since then, the administrative office was built on the west side with the man trap and the buzzer system.

“There is no perfect solution, but you can’t argue that it’s not safer than it was before,” Hines said.

Turn a Kind Eye being kind is important

Our world is suffering from an epidemic of insensitivity. Too many kids feel that school is not a safe place because of the things people say to them.

-Sophomore Abby richmond Kindness and compassion aren’t hard things to incorporate into your daily life. It just takes a second of your time to think, “If I say this, how will it make that person feel?”

It’s not about what you’re trying to say or what you really mean; it’s about how they’re going to take it. If that doesn’t work, try thinking about the last time someone made you feel bad about yourself and apply that to the situation, and think, “Will they feel the way I did when I say this?”

Compassion is putting others’ feelings before yours. You have to think before you speak. I’ve met too many people who say something right as they think it and they frequently drive people away. It upsets me when people do these things because it’s so easy to control. You have to care about how people feel.

Being nice is so easy. It frustrates me because everyone deserves kindness and has the ability to spread it. You just have to put in a little effort. Kindness and compassion go a long way.

Teens feel as if there is no way out of a these kind of situations, so it often results in suicide. It is possible to deter kids away from suicide, you just have to care.

Care for people, care for the way you make them feel, and care for yourself and the persona you express.

Being kind starts with yourself. In order to successfully live in this world, you have to be comfortable in your own skin.

To be kind to others, you have to be kind to yourself and your body first. High school is hard. It is hard to be happy with your body because of social media, the cliques and stereotypes. Having a positive mindset and believing that you deserve what you have is hard.

Thinking about your future is terrifying and sometimes the stress makes you want to curl up in your bed and hibernate for the rest of your life, but there’s a world out there and a life you need live in the best way possible.

The art of Listening “We are mastered in speech, but are we just as skilled in listening?”

Whether it is a subject you like or if it is a debate about something you have no insight on, open your ears.

One simple step could broaden your horizon, open your eyes, and maybe even change your life for the better. We are mastered in speech, but are we just as skilled in listening?

Our teachers have told us from the first day of our schooling journey to pay attention and listen.

My question is, do we practice this? From day to day we get lost in our lives and the crazy hustle and we forget the people around us.

Everywhere. Living their life, going through struggles just like you, trying to find their place.

Life can be difficult and seem unfair. Knowing someone is there to have your back and guide you through the dark is needed at times. Everyone needs someone to listen to them, at least once in their lifetime. You have the ability to do something amazing with a simple effort. Let them know that you are present. Let them know that you are attending their conversation.

By simply listening, you can do so much for someone without even moving a finger, and that is the definition of powerful.

So, I challenge you to close your mouth and just open your ears.

Integrating our monetary system

“Throughout history, we as a nation have seen some monumental female figures. Yet, I wonder why none of them have been on the face of our money.”

-Senior Emma Cox In the year 2020, a woman will finally appear on our money.

Abolitionist Harriet Tubman will replace President Andrew Jackson on the $20 bill.

In our 242 years of being a nation, the United States has only officially featured two women on our currency, and these appearances were short lived.

Throughout history, we as a nation have seen some monumental female figures. Yet, I wonder why none of them have been on the face of our money.

Taking a look at other countries’ monetary systems, many have women on their paper bills, such as Argentina, New Zealand, Italy, Great Britain, and modern Central and Western Africa. Even ancient civilizations and empresses have been on coins from Egypt and England.

A country as young as the United States of America should have featured and kept a woman on our currency system.

It is 2018 and we still have a portrait of Andrew Jackson, who was quite frankly an awful president and man on our $20 bill. Jackson was indeed the great man who enacted the Indian Removal Act of 1830.

Some may argue that countries such as Great Britain and Argentina feature women, but only political figures, same as the United States; and we cannot help that a woman has

not been elected president.

However, some countries feature women on their money that were strong, independent figures in society. Italian Maria Montessori was a physician and educator, New Zealander Kate Sheppard was a suffragist. Not all women on money hold or have held political power. A woman, such as Elizabeth Cady Stanton, Susan B. Anthony, Clara Barton, or Rosa Parks, can still have as much influence as the Presidents of the United States or the Kings of England.

Overall, the United States has been stuck in a rut for a majority of its life. In many ways we have been an innovative nation open to change, and in some we are behind the times.

We have sprinted toward change with many aspects, however a few things have remained stagnant. Such as our display of a woman on our monetary system, an African American as president, or a female presidential candidate. The actions of such events have called for change, a social change in our general viewpoint about what it means to be truly equal; for both men and women, black, white, and everyone in between.

As nation that lives up to its nickname ‘the melting pot’, our political figures and public actions need to reflect our welcoming and inclusive nature.

As high school students, all of us are in the process of trying to find out who we are.

Some turn into football jocks, drama nerds or the people who are 8 to 3’ers and just here for their diploma.

This does not define who you are. Once we graduate, we won’t be known as the cheerleader or the art geek. We will be defined by our actions, the way we treat people, and who we become.

Some people may be fine being known as the student who only care about themselves. The student that rolled their eyes and goofed off in class or the student that kept to themself.

That is not how I want to be remembered. I want to be remembered as the girl who was kind and compassionate to others and who smiled

on even the worst days.

We experience moments when we will look in the mirror and see we are not the person we want to be. People make mistakes and get lost in the madness of life. They get caught up in things that don’t matter until their world revolves around it.

It’s OK to lose yourself for a little bit. It is not the end of the world, but you have to be able to have a baseline of who you are so you don’t lose your values and morals.

No matter who you decide to be, it is your choice.

Don’t let other people make that decision for you.

Whether you want to be loud and make your mark, or stay quiet. You are in control. You are the captain of the ship called life, so sail where you want to.

Gulley lived in China for one year, Thailand and Kenya for four weeks Copy Editor

From China, to Thailand, and ending in Kenya, Senior Asher Gulley, traveled the world for a year and four weeks.

Gulley visited Kenya for two weeks during his senior year summer.

“We went to Kenya to help an organization give native children an education, and we took water filters to the children’s families,” Gulley said.

“We went to the school in Kimilili and there was a big party as I played with the children. A preacher blessed the new building and we passed out the water filters; that was my favorite day.”

Gulley visited Thailand for two weeks during winter 2016.

“My family and I visited my brother’s foreign-exchange family in Thailand and ate some coconut ice cream from a market shop his exchange grandmother owns,” Gulley said.

Gulley left for China at the beginning of his sophomore year and re-

turned this summer.

Gulley traveled with his parents who teach college courses; his mom works with an exchange teaching program and was sent to China, while his brother was a foreign exchange student in Thailand.

While in China, the Gulley’s lived in an apartment on a college campus while his parents taught.

Even though Gulley said he knew some Chinese, he could not attend the school close to his home because he was not considered a citizen; he had to leave the country every 60 days.

“The school in China was very closed off; even with permission from the headmaster, I wasn’t allowed to attend,” Gulley said. “We tried the international school, but it was too expensive.”

The Chinese culture is not entirely different from America’s; most of the time they are walking around paying attention to their phones, he said.

“Sometimes, they’re very self-oriented, like when I would walk around I would see some cliques,” Gulley

said. “But everywhere I went, everyone was generally nice and always welcoming.”

When Gulley was a guest, he said the Chinese loved to be good hosts.

Occasionally, they would force him to have a good time.

Adjusting to China’s way of life was difficult for Gulley, especially with the language barrier.

“In restaurants, it would be hard to communicate to the staff since we didn’t speak the same language,” Gulley said. “The natives love drinking hot water instead of cold. I thought it was weird, but now drinking hot water seems better.”

Because Gulley lived on an international college campus he knew people from all over the world.

“We knew people from Bangladesh, where they speak Bengali, some from Pakistan, speaking Urdu, and there were some people from different East African countries,” Gulley said.

Wherever Gulley traveled, everyone was generally nice, regardless of background, he said.

When you look back two or three years later and it

One day, you’re going to look back and think about how quickly it all went by.

There is so much more life left to live after high school.

The queens of the court have been dominating the community’s surrounding teams. Freshman volleyball, currently 10-1, have been working harder to keep their record up by winning the games. Jayda Logan, freshman, enjoys the attitudes of the team and looks forward to the rest of the season.

“We are working together to keep each other up and staying positive is very important,” Logan said.

Logan said the main focuses of practice are skill work and looking towards the future. The players push each other to get to the next level. To keep the team motivated, they enjoy playing the top teams and winning the game. Every game consists of talking and building positive energy. They motivate each other to go for the ball and work their hardest.

Kirby Kenny, freshman volleyball coach, said she feels good about the freshman team.

“They are working together really well and they are learning a lot. They are really just developing their skill and their volleyball IQ,” Kenny said. “I am looking forward to our Panther volleyball program in the future, Kenny said.

Logan said the coaches are the reason they have done so well.

“Kenny has been amazing. She has brought us to another level of volleyball and has strengthened our chemistry on the court,” Logan said.

Brooklyn Harmon, freshman, said she has been impressed with her first year with Panther volleyball.

“I really like the amount of skill work and how much we focus on the basics, also positivity has been pushed a lot this year, “ said Harmon Harmon said all the player strive to better themselves and never want to disappoint their coaches.

Baylee Teagarden, JV coach, is excited for the future for Panther volleyball.

Seeing the girls improve and compete against the harder team has been exciting she said.

“Our goal for the JV team is to always do our job. Our job consists of three main functions,” Teagarden said. “To improve our skills so our players are ready to step up to the varsity court when called upon, to challenge the freshman team in practice so our program continues to improve and be competitive in the JV league.

Ana Velazquez, senior

Why have you been watching all the games?

I have a brother who plays soccer so I go to support him and plus I’m a huge fan of soccer.

How do you feel when watching the games?

I feel excited since it’s a passion of mine.

Were you going to try out for the team?

I didn’t because they don’t have a girl’s team, if they did I would definitely play.

Varsity soccer is currently 5-3. The team is optimistic to finish the season well.

Gabriel Velazquez, sophomore, is a winger on the varsity team. As a winger on the soccer team he scores and plays defense.

“I enjoy being on the team. My teammates are great and they know what they’re doing,” Velazquez said.

“We started off bad in the first few matches, but after that we started bouncing back. We are doing good as of right now.”

The team is working hard to improve as the season goes on.

“Practice is typically working with the basics, like passing, possession, and shooting,” Velazquez said.

Ryan Wokutch, junior, plans to continue with soccer. Wokutch would like to play soccer in college.

“I want to go as far as I can with it. Maybe go to college soccer and beyond that if I can,” he said.

Wokutch and others on the team said they enjoy the family feel the soccer team gives.

“I feel like the team is a family, and we like to joke around and stuff.” he said.

Shutout city team keeps opponents to zero points

The Friday night lights shine on the fifth winningest football team in the state of Kansas.

Gavin Stark, senior, has high hopes for the season.

“I hope to go undefeated and to win State. I know it’s a big goal, but I want that State Championship,” Stark said.

To some players, such as Stark, football has a special thing going on this year.

“Dump has never had a team that has three shutouts since he’s been coaching, let alone in the first four games,” Stark said.

Sports in Kansas, an interactive sports information platform, agrees.

“Panthers, a traditional 4A power, could be a team to watch,” says Sports in Kansas.

Varsity football has four shutouts so far, making them undefeated.

“We are our worst enemy this season,” Coach Mike Dumpert, said.

Paola football has a reputation for being successful, but there’s always teams that stick out more than the rest.

He said getting a shutout is a team effort.

“Every team is different and has a different personality,” Dumpert said.

“I really don’t think of it in terms of wins and losses, I was concerned about our physicality and how well we were going to hold onto the ball but we did both pretty well.”

Cross country added many new members. Ali McCullough, business teacher, is the new cross country coach. McCullough was the head track coach for seven years in DeSoto.

She also coached at Saint Mary’s College in Pittsburg.

“With cross country, it’s more of a family,” McCullough said.

“Because it’s a small, closer group instead of being more individualized.”

The goal for the season is to qualify for state. McCullough said she is running practices similar to previous years, but adding agility and abs to the workouts to get the runners ready for the upcoming races.
