test, it’s pretty hard to remind yourself they are supposed to be your equal.

It’s easy to look at people like this and start imagining how perfect their lives are, but in reality their lives are probably just as messed up as your own.

They still make mistakes and have traits they’d like to change about themselves.

We all have complications in our lives. Sometimes we get so caught up in our own troubles we forget other people are dealing with their own problems that might be even worse.

That’s the issue with judging people. Until you’ve actually talked to them, there’s a good chance you don’t really know them or their situation. It’s impossible to be conscious of a person’s entire history and background just by looking at them.

So next time you find yourself passing judgment on someone, take a step back and truly consider your words and how they may affect that person.

“As long as they don’t do any thing that seems overly weird, then why judge?”

“You don’t know what’s going on in their life; you don’t know the whole story.”

If we think someone else is better than us, then we place them on a pedestal, in hopes that they’ll fall. We look at them, and think we will never measure up; that we will never be good enough.

We automatically assume we know everything about these categories of people. Instead of embracing what makes them different from us, we judge them for it.

They talk about different things, dress differently and are involved in different activities. God forbid we actually talk to them, because if we were to actually get to know them, we just might find they’re not as different from us as we think.

But what truly makes one individual any different or better off than another?

It’s been said a countless number of times in everything from the Bible to the Declaration of Independence that we were all created as equals.

When you come across someone who looks as though they were created in Photoshop with perfect hair, the ability to do any sport and ace every

The majority of us have known each other since preschool. We have watched each other grow and develop through our booger-eating phases all the way to our “adulting” phase.

We know every one’s financial status, home address and family drama dating back to their great-grandparents.

This has made it very easy for us to start putting people into categories.

To judge them based on everything we think we know about them, and once we’ve decided which category they fit into, it almost never changes.

If we think we’re better than they are, then we don’t bother to pay them any attention at all. We see right through them, just because they seem

They get here before the social media editor sun rises and leave long after the sun sets. The remnants of last night’s game have disappeared and the scent of freshly baked bread is in the air.

The custodians and food service workers help students behind the scenes.

Junior Dalton Sparks said the work of the custodians is under-appreciated. Sparks helps custodians by cleaning windows, taking out the trash, mopping the floors and setting up for big events.

“It would make our job a lot easier if kids didn’t drag their feet and make black marks,” Sparks said. “We have to clean all of them up one-by-one.”

dian Dennis Kelly said he works to make the school as clean as possible.

“It’s satisfying and rewarding to know that kids have a safe and clean place to come and learn,” Kelly said.

Kelly works eight hours on week days, and from three to 12 on weekends. He said he has worked at the school for five years and enjoys joking with the students.

“Our students could make our job a lot easier by respecting the school and grounds,” Kelly said.

Librarian Tracy Angermayer said she appreciates all the work custodians and food service workers do at the school.

“Our custodians do so much cleaning. It’s insane,”Angermayer said. “Our school would not be the same without the custo-

dians and food service workers.”

Custodians aren’t the only ones who help behind the scenes.

Head food service worker Elaine Harris said she loves her job.

“There’s never a dull moment and there is a new challenge each and every day,” Harris said.

Harris has worked in food service for 30 years and seven of those have been at the school.

“To just know we served all of the Paola students a balanced and nutritious meal is the best part about my job, not to mention I have the best staff,” Harris said.

Senior Jacob Maichel, junior, said the food service workers make him happy.

“The ladies are always smiling and looking happy,” Maichel said.

Trejo said his ancestors can be traced back to Honduras and Spain. Though Trejo has never been to Honduras or Spain, he plans to visit Honduras during winter break.

Trejo said some of his family’s holiday traditions are different than typical American traditions.

“We like to party in Honduras versus a calmer family gathering,” Trejo said. “We like to get together as a family, listen to artists such as Romeo Santos and Kazzabe and just dance, no matter the occasion.”

Noel and Izbet said they shared a longing for their home back in Mexico. Among other things, both said they missed their family and friends..

Sophomore Chris Trejo has a background of mixed nationalities. Despite being born and raised in the U.S. he has grown up speaking Spanish at home and English at school.

“I don’t find it difficult to go from one language to another, but that is just how I’ve grown up,” Trejo said. “I enjoy speaking a different language at home it is just something different.”

Unlike Trejo, sophomore siblings Noel and Izbet Ortiz moved to Paola from Mexico in August last year. Izbet said she has had a harder time adjusting to the language than Noel who seemed to be catching on a little quicker.

“It is bad for me because it is hard for me to speak English,”

Senior Kennedy McMullin understands the stress of being busy with school and extracurricular activities.

McMullin is the president of KAYS, co-president of FCCLA, member of National Honor’s Society, Developmental Leadership, and she will play softball in the spring.

McMullin must also balance a job.

“I work at Panera and I get home after work around 1010:30,” she said.

She’s also taking several college courses including Human Anatomy, College Prep English and Government.

She said she can easily spend two to two-and-a-half hours doing homework for her classes each night.

“I spend probably 30 minutes to one hour studying for Human Anatomy and I can spend anywhere from an hour to one-hourand-a half working on College Prep English on school nights,” she said.

McMullin said if she were to focus all of her time on school work, she wouldn’t have any time for friends or family.

This year is harder on her because she has a job to balance with all of her school duties, she said.

According to Berney Wilkinson, writer for The Ledger, students spend more than 9 hours a day working on school work, which can put students at risk

for a “burnout” if all of their time is consumed with school and scheduled events.

Junior Bea Pomatto said she knows what it’s like to be busy, too.

Pomatto is in theater, drama board, choir, Madrigals, forensics, track and she is a lifeguard at the Ozone on weekends.

Along with her extra curricular activities, Pomatto balances

“I spend about an hour to an hour-and-a-half doing homework per class day,” Pomatto said.

Pomatto said gets stressed pretty easily.

“Sometimes I’m good at handling it. It helps talking to my friends and my boyfriend about everything. Mostly I try to get my emotions out through the activities I do or something fun,” she said.

English teacher Matthew Arnold worked throughout high school, was a member of several sports teams and organizations.

“I pushed myself to go out and be active in certain groups and sports teams. I would say it helps if you are active in school,” Arnold said.

Arnold said being active in school helps because students get to know teachers and other students better.

Arnold said it is definitely possible for students to stretch themselves too thin.

“There are a lot of students working multiple jobs, on multiple sports teams and members of several different organizations; the possibility is definitely there,” said Arnold.

Arnold said he tries his best to work with students he knows are busy with other activities.

“I try to help students out if I know they’re going to be gone. I’m likely to help or give an extension on something if a student is going through something big with school, a game, or a big club event, I just try to help them out,” said Arnold.

Arnold shared his biggest tip to the students who are busy with a lot of activities, organization.

“That’s what I found out with myself in high school and college, I had to keep myself very well organized so that I could balance between my different sports teams, jobs, and homework,” said Arnold.

Family ties senior brian alberty copes with many difficulties throughout his life

His first play. His eighth-grade graduation. His choir concerts.

These are just a few of the things senior Brian Alberty wished his dad could have seen.

“I just wanted him to be there, really that was it,” he said.

“Whenever there were father-son things at school I was just lost, I didn’t know what to do because he was away and wasn’t there for me.”

When Alberty was 2 years old, his father was sent to prison, was released but then sent back again when Alberty was 4 years old.

As a child, Alberty and his mother, Autumn Bassett, would try to visit his father at least once a week.

During the visits, Alberty said they would sit in a cafeteria and have people monitoring them throughout the stay.

“As I got older, I got busier,” he said. “The conversations were short, because he knew nothing

about me. It was hard to have a conversation with this person who was supposed to be there, but wasn’t. He’d ask me about my grades and theater, but the conversation would always end there.”

During his visits to see his father, Alberty said he was at a loss for why his dad was in prison.

“I was really confused about it as a kid,” Alberty said. “The people in there are in there for murder... so seeing my father in there made me think he was with them. He did something so big that it landed him in there with them and made him lose his freedom. So how could I look up to him if he is in there?”

Eventually, when Alberty was in the eighth grade, Basset told him why his father was incarcerated.

“Around that time is when I started to become quiet,” he said. “I blocked people out because I was trying to figure out how I was even supposed to react to it.”

“It’s a very interesting relationship because she is my mother, but at the same time she is one of my best friends,” he said. “I don’t talk to her like she’s my mother. I talk to her like I’m just talking to my friend. It’s weird, but at the same time, it

Over the years, Bassett said their relationship has grown.

“I know that he is my son, but he is also my backbone,” she said.

Bassett said she never hid the fact that his father was incarcer-

ated from Alberty or his brothers, but she was always worried about the effect it would have on them.

“I think having his father in jail has affected Brian in a good and bad way,” she said. “The good because he knows the consequences of doing wrong and does not want to be away from his family. The bad because he never got to know his father.”

At a young age, Bassett said Alberty was forced to grow up and take on many responsibilities.

Not only does he set a good example for his three younger brothers, but he helps prepare their meals and makes sure they do all their homework, she said.

“They look up to me a lot,” he said. “I mean we argue of course -- we are brothers -- but they respect me when they know that they need to.”

Alberty’s brother, freshman Tre Bassett, said he thinks of Alberty as his role model because of how much he helps him.

“He’s there when I’m down and when I’m up,” he said. “When I found out about my father it was pretty awful, but he helped push all of us through it and honestly, I didn’t care too much because I already had Brian to be there as a father to me.”

Because he has so much responsibility and is actively involved in several clubs and activities, Alberty said he often feels overwhelmed.

“Sometimes it does stress me out because I’m involved in a lot of different things that take up a lot of time,” he said. “We make it work though.”

To help him get through the stressful times, Alberty said he has a strong support system.

One of the many people who help encourage Alberty is junior Julia Capettini.

“I call him my best friend because he’s probably one of the only people who knows everything about me,” Capettini said.

“Without him pushing me to tell him things and being there for me persistently I would’ve never opened up to him or made half of the friends that I have today.”

Capettini said she is in awe of the way Alberty has handled the disadvantages in his life.

“I definitely respect him more knowing that he turned out the way he did with everything he’s been through,” she said. “You never would’ve guessed what he has been through just by looking at him.”

At the end of the day, Alberty said he believed he will be able to accomplish his dreams of pursuing a career in theater.

“A lot of people have helped me get to where I am today and as long as I have support I think I can make it,” he said.

In this upcoming election senior Lora Wikstrom said she plans to vote for Hillary Clinton.

“She would bring a lot of different viewpoints,” Wikstrom said.

Wikstrom said she agrees with Clinton’s foreign policy.

The CBS website stated that Clinton plans to provide support for Arab and Kurdish, stand up to both China and Russia and strengthen its alliances.

“I don’t agree with Trump deporting illegal immigrants,” Wikstrom said. “It takes away what it is to be an American.”

Donald Trump changed the election race when he announced his candidacy in June. Senior Isaac Heid said he plans to vote for Donald Trump.

“I agree with most of his tax plans and with his foreign policy,” he said.

Trump plans to increase the after-tax income for the top one percent of taxpayers.

The middle class would see a 1.3 percent increase according to the CNBC website.

Heid said he disagrees with Hillary Clinton’s stance on abortion and her tax plans.

“This year it could go either way,” Heid said. “I don’t think he will particularly be liked by the people. He is very extreme.”

I tried to keep going but I couldn’t.

The creatures were bumping, pushing and shoving me.

I tried to fight back, when all of a sudden my life flashed before me over all the noise.

Walking through the halls in between classes is much like a walk through the jungle.

Sloths crawl slower than any human could possibly move.

Poison dart frogs seem to ricochet off lockers in a pinball-machine fashion. The direction in which they’ll land is anyone’s guess.

Squirrel monkeys walk in red-rover formation daring anyone to try and pass them.

And lastly, there’s the “king” of the hallway jungle.

This self-appointed royalty sets

the pace in which all other creatures around it will move. It can stop abruptly for no apparent reason, leaving the rest of the jungle animals to fall like dominoes behind him.

Whatever creature you liken yourself to: do the rest of the herd a favor and be aware that the rules of the road apply to the hallways, too.

Watch the abrupt stops.

Stay to the right.

Pass on the left and keep it moving.

A few weeks ago, I was out eating with a few friends at a local restaurant. A teenager, about my age, came in with an older woman, whom I assumed was his grandma.

She walked in first, and he followed her in -- barely paying attention -- his face buried into his phone and his headphones in his ears.

I figured he would take out his headphones and put his phone down to talk to his companion, but throughout the entire meal, he kept his technology with him.

The boy could’ve easily had a conversation with her, but instead she looked disappointed to be practically eating alone.

We are so focused on material items, we often forget to take the time to appreciate the people around us. When did we start putting earthy objects ahead of the people we have in our lives?

People often get so caught up with social media and what everyone else is doing in the world around them, they often forget to look up from their phone screens and appreciate the people around them.

According to a survey done

by Digital Times, the average American spends 4.7 hours a day on their phones, which is nearly one third of the time we are awake.

When someone gets older,

they’re not going to remember the nights they lay in bed on their phone, they’ll remember the ones they went out with friends and made lasting memories.

Life is too short not to stop and appreciate the people in it, because they won’t be here forever.

Look up from your phone or computer and appreciate the world around you. When your mom asks you how your day was, take the time to respond instead of being engrossed in the latest tweet.

Start overusing the term “I love you,” and take the time to appreciate the people in your life. In the end, that’s all that really matters.

Red nose, white face, and fuzzy red hair. Floppy shoes and colorful clothes dancing in circuses. Scares you on Halloween. Bozo the Clown.

Now they are in your backyards to scare you. It’s a real-life scary movie.

According to the Guardian website, the first sighting of these creepy clowns was by a boy. A clown came up to him and whispered something.

The clowns were trying to lure him into a house that sits on five acres of land. The girl that now owns the land said the clowns are trying to scare

us. They hit her house with a chain and then ran into the woods as she came out.

Our school responded to the world wide scare by more police presence Teachers and students were advised to leave the building immediately after school was out. On social media, a threat was posted on Facebook about the clowns being close and wanting to come to our schools.

People are joking about clown sighting and trying to scare other people. Other clowns come out with the same intention.

Recently in Fairhope, Ala. the same thing happened. A Facebook threat from, what he calls himself, Flomo Klown showed a balding clown with red, stringy hair and a rubber nose. His shirt was drenched in blood. His bio simply reads, ‘I kill people for a living.’ He posted a picture that was targeting the town along with gorier clown pictures, with knife and gun emojis.

Four years too many political apathy at its finest “The year is 2016, and America’s citizens are afraid.

Afraid of what their opponent’s candidate will do if they get into office. But the people have forgotten the power rests with them.”

-Senior Ethan Palsmeier The year is 2018. America has been thrown into endless turmoil.

The economy has collapsed. Industry has ground to a halt. The entire nation is jobless and scavenging for what few scraps remain just to get by. Rival gangs fight for useless territory daily. And there is only one person to blame.

The citizens of what was formerly the United States think back to one day nearly two years ago. A day that will live in infamy. On that day, the people chose who was supposed to be their leader for the next four years. Instead, they put into power the single most corrupt, despicable

and evil person on the planet whose only goal was to destroy the very foundation of modern democracy.

At least that is the attitude of most voters .It appears as though there is no right answer to that age-old question of ‘who are you voting for?’.

Answer one way, and you are labeled a corrupt supporter of career politicians and socialism. Answer the other way, and you are accused of being racist, bigoted and homophobic.

The accuracy of these claims vary yet it stands to reason all the candidates are horrid villains competing in what has

to be the worst presidential election in American history. Except it isn’t.

The year is 1824. One of the most scandalous elections in U.S. history had just ended. Democratic-Republican John Quincy Adams had just secured the presidency against his fellow party members Andrew Jackson, William H. Crawford and then-Speaker of the House Henry Clay. Their rivalry split the party four ways, effectively destroying it. Jackson had won the most electoral votes, with Adams right behind, but lacked enough of the popular vote to become president.

Under the Twelfth Amendment, the House of Representatives would decide between the two. Speaker Henry Clay had spent the majority of his campaign slandering Jackson and rallied a coalition within the House to guarantee Adams the presidency. In return, Adams made Clay his Secretary of State. Jackson’s supporters, united into what would become the modern Democratic party, decried this Corrupt Bargain and set in motion the events that would lead to his landslide victory over Adams in the election of 1828.

The year is 2016, and America’s citizens are afraid.

Afraid of what their opponent’s candidate will do if they get into office. But the people have forgotten the power rests with them. They place too much value into the symbolism of their elected officials’ offices and allow themselves to be led by those unfit to be politicians, even though it was the people who voted them in. They allow political parties to divide them and stand at odds with each other, forgetting that America was founded on the principle of compromise.

As the elections of years long gone have shown us, America and its government have survived corruption and hideous elections before, and it will do so again.

The people, when united behind their ideologies of what is best for the country, can create change. Real change.

Ultimately, it is up to the people to decide who will lead them. They must make their decision based not on party loyalty, media coverage, or the negativity of the campaigns. They must examine the facts and choose who will lead with America’s best interests in mind. And if the wrong candidate is chosen, it is up to the people to fix their mistakes during the next election. Because there will always be another election.

doing a lot of it,” Wulfkuhle said. “ [Another goals is] getting some teamwork amongst the students” Wulfkuhle said she was looking for a community service project for FCCLA. She reached out and found out they had openings for Circle Meals and signed up.

“I shared this with them last year before school was out. They wanted to move forward with it,” Wulfkuhle said.

Wulfkuhle said she believes each student will grow as a person by helping with Circle Meals.

“I think it makes them feel better when they are doing the right thing and the [students] realize they have [more than] what people who are less fortunate have,”Wulfkuhle said.

Rosner said she hopes to meet a lot of new people and is already making new friends.

“I already met two upperclassmen who are super nice and funny and they gave me a ride home when my car broke down,” Rosner said.

Senior Ty Ratzlaff said he likes helping people and cooking the meal is not that much work.

“If we do another one I will help cook,” Ratzlaff said. “I enjoy cooking.”

Ratzlaff said they made pancakes and sausages for dinner and it took two hours to prepare.

“Everyone cooperated and worked hard together to get it done,” Ratzlaff said.

Freshmen Taylor Rosner said she feels it is only right to lend a hand.

“I feel I need to give back. I am blessed so much and I feel I have to do my part in society,” Rosner said.

Rosner, as a member of FCCLA, has taken part in the club’s community service project called Circle Meals. Their first meal to prepare for people in need was Sept. 19.

Rosner said her experience has been positive and she hopes to make memories.

“Memories are supposed to be about high school experience,” Rosner said.

Kathy Wulfkuhle, FCCLA adviser, used her own memories of preparing and serving food for the less fortunate in church basement with her mother to get FCCLA involved in the project.

“We provided one [ meal] every week.

We never knew how many people we were going to [eat]” Wulfkuhle said.

Community members arrange Circle Meals, which combine meetings and meals, for families with financial issues.

The culinary arts students and FCCLA students decide the menus for the Circle Meals, Wulfkuhle said.

She said the ultimate goal for the project is to get students aware of people in need in the community and that FCCLA can help them. “[The goal is to] have some of the [students] step up to be leaders, maybe even take charge of the functions instead of me

Junior Skyler Williams loves practicing as a whole team.

“I love having the new people in there and not just us,” Williams said. “Last year it would be only about eight of us playing together all the time so it’s awesome to have the new faces in there.”

One of Coach Joni Reed’s goals for the team has been to create a program of unity from seventh through twelvth grade, Reed said.

Reed has lived in the area and served as an assistant coach with former varsity coach Michelle Abshire. Reed has coached volleyball for 16 years, she said.

Another change for the team happened during team pictures in August. They didn’t wear makeup and wore their hair up.

Senior Chander Karr said she was shocked when she found out. was “We usually get all dolled up, but I understand where she’s coming from,” Karr said.

came to a game to recruit them, they needed to look like their picture in the program when they played.

Karr said that she loves Reed as a coach.

“It’s definitely different,” Karr said. “She has helped us become a better team.”

Another big change to the team is the number of players.

“Last year we would range from seven to eight players, but this year we have about 11,” Williams said.

Sophomore Maggi Morgan said she misses her former coach.

“I liked her a lot and she was a good coach. She was always pushing us to be a team and to do our best and that’s what I like in a coach, just like Reed she pushes us to do our best and be a team,” Morgan said.

Morgan said she has learned non-linear passing, from Reed, which is passing sideways instead of forward.

Freshman Lily Hermes also runs on the varsity team for cross country.

Coach Lesley Wilson said Hermes is a runner with lots of potential and has no issues running with upperclassmen.

“It’s kinda scary, but I try to just think that we are equal and we are all a team, no matter what the age,” Hermes said.

Hermes said the biggest adjustment from middle school sports is that it takes a lot more time and commitment.

“The competition is a lot different,” she said. “There are four times as many people and they are all older.”

Hermes says running with upperclassmen is intimidating, but says they treat her nice and just like any other runner.

“Everyone enjoys being around her, she is a positive addition to the team,” Wilson said. “I look forward to her being a leader.”

His heart skipped a beat when he kicked the ball through the goal. His teammates screamed in excitement and freshman Ryan Wokutch couldn’t hold back a smile as all of the upperclassmen celebrated his kick.

Wokutch starts varsity soccer and said he enjoys playing with new players.

“I worked hard during the summer and during practice,” he said. “My brother Kyle really helped me out by motivating me to work hard and never give up.”

Wokutch said the biggest adjustment he has faced is that everyone is bigger, stronger and faster. He also said the practices are a lot longer with a lot more games.

“I like the challenge of competing with them,” he said.

Bucket List before graduation goals {Karly hoskins} {jacquee hecker} managing editor

With only 50 days before she graduates, senior Alicia Leach said she doesn’t have much time to accomplish all of her goals.

“I want to do something dope before I graduate,” she said. “I just don’t know what.”

Leach said she has drawn inspiration from her close friend senior Jordyn Fritchman, who recently accomplished her bucket list item of jumping off of a cliff into water.

“The first time I tried to do it I got scared, but when I went back I just felt empowered and then I did it so I could conquer my fear,” Fritchman said.

“It was exhilarating, but I just kind of wanted to get it over with.”

she was vacationing in Branson, Mo. While there, she also went zip-lining.

“It was so much fun, and so far outside of my comfort zone,” she said.

Sophomore Trey Young said his goal before graduating is to get good enough grades so he can get a scholarship into the college of his choice.

While he is not yet sure what college he wants to attend, he thinks he might want to go into architecture and knows he’ll try his best .

“If I don’t get the scholarship, I probably won’t be able to go to college because our family doesn’t have enough money, so I’m just trying to make it the best that I can for our family and stick it out,” Young said.
