econd World War veterans were honoured for their bravery in the D-Day landings when they received the Legion D'Honneur from the Honorary Consul for France during a special ceremony in Wolverhampton.

They were recognised for their efforts during and after D-Day, 6 June 1944 – the Allied invasion of mainland Europe and a crucial turning point in Second World War which marked the beginning of the end for Adolf Hitler and Nazi Germany.

taff from Birmingham law firm Clarke Willmott LLP successfully braved a night sleeping rough at Villa Park to raise funds to tackle homelessness in the city.

Solicitor Sundeep Sangha and legal assistant Stacey Collins took part in the sponsored sleep out along with other top local business people, raising over £300 for the cause.

It is hoped the event, organised by the Aston Villa Foundation and Thrive Together Birmingham, will raise over £35,000 in total, which will go towards local community charities tackling issues of inequality and homelessness.

Stacey Collins said: “Last year Clarke Willmott took part in the Christmas Shoe Box Appeal and delivered boxes to the city’s homeless. It was such a rewarding experience and something we wanted to offer more support to this year.

“The Villa Park Sleep Out was great. Although we didn’t get a lot of sleep, it was really good to be able to look around the stands at night and see it in a completely different light. We met with some great local businesses and heard from Thrive and the Urban Church Fund about how the money raised will be spent and the heartwarming stories of how the organ-

Beacon shines light on Her Majesty’s 90th Birthday

Queen’s 90th Celebrated With Nationwide Beacon Lightings irmingham’s Lord Mayor, Councillor Raymond Hassall, lit a beacon in Birmingham in honour of Her Majesty The Queen’s 90th birthday as over 1,000 beacons were lit throughout the United Kingdom, overseas Territories and Commonwealth Countries to celebrate the landmark.

Her Majesty The Queen, together with His Royal Highness The Prince of Wales lit the Principal Beacon at Windsor Castle.

As a small number of people turned out at the Victoria Square occasion, in, for the Conservative Party the second city, Cllr.

Hassall was joined by cross-party politicians including John Clancy, representing the Labour Party and Cllr. Robert Alden who represents the Erdington ward, for the Conservative Party.

His Royal Highness The Prince of Wales wrote a message to all beacon lighters around the country which read:“I am delighted that so many people throughout the United Kingdom who came together to light beacons in celebration of my mother, The Queen’s, ninetieth birthday. It is a wonderful gesture which I know deeply touched Her Majesty.

olverhampton’s new-look city centre market opened for business with new market housing 46 licensed outdoor stalls which are enclosed by 16 colourfully branded cabins.

City of Wolverhampton Council Service Director for City Environment, Ross Cook, said: “The new cabins bring the existing indoor and outdoor markets together to

enhance the customer experience.

It will provide vitality and important footfall to this area of the city and is another example of the regeneration of Wolverhampton.”

Sixteen veterans from Wolverhampton and the surrounding area came to the Civic Centre to receive les insignes de chevalier dans l'ordre de la légion d'honneur from Honorary Consul Robert Mille.

They included William Baron, Leonard Beddow, Christopher Collier, Geoffrey Ensor, Brian Fellows, Albert Gallear, Arthur Jones, Cyril Jones, Albert Mobbs, Ronald Pearce, Wesley Russell, Charles Sharples, Horace Smith, Desmond Spruce, Francis Swann and George Waterford.

Relatives of veterans Joe Davies, Syd Harthill, John Joyce and William Pope, who had sadly recently passed away or who were otherwise unable to attend, were also present to receive the award on their behalf.

Monsieur Mille said: "The

national Order of the Legion D’Honneur is the highest decoration in France. The French President, Francois Hollande, has decided to recognise the bravery of the British veterans who played such an instrumental role in the liberation of France, by awarding them the title of Chevalier de la Legion D’Honneur.

I am here on behalf of the French people to express our undying and heartfelt thanks in respect to the enormous debt of gratitude we owe you.”

The Vice Lord-Lieutenant, Colonel George Marsh TD, said: “It’s a privilege and honour to join the veterans on an important day like today.

They are living witnesses to the history of the liberation of France, and I’d like to thank them for putting their lives on the line for their country, and for their endeavour and bravery, and congratulate them most sin-

cerely on receipt of this award.”

Veteran Wesley Russell said: “I am very surprised to receive this award but I am very pleased – and my son will be pleased too as he collects medals and memorabilia.

It’s very important that young people know what happened because they don’t teach it much in schools these days and we don’t want people to repeat those mistakes which took us to war.

It was all such a long time ago that my recollection of what happened is all very vague now; all I remember was that it was very noisy.”

Fellow veteran Arthur Jones said: “This is a great honour; I feel that I am receiving this medal for the lads who didn’t come home.

I am lucky that I am here for this – and we should remember those boys who aren’t.”

he National Society for the Prevention of Cruelty to Children (NSPCC) held a Networking Evening, in Birmingham, to help raise funds and awareness for the charity which set out to maintain the health and wellbeing of children and young people throughout Britain, at the Pure Bar & Kitchen, in the city’s Colmore Business District.

An opportunity to highlight the importance of the charity, the night was a chance for people

to meet just some of the worthy workers behind the scene and be introduced to the Birmingham Business Board members, business people from all over the Midlands, who willingly offer their spare time, and funds, for the cause.

Amanda Synott, NSPCC Fundraising Manager for Birmingham, said: “We are always looking for funds to keep the organisation going so events like this networking is vitally important to create and maintain awareness for the work we do.

T

he notion of shadows in art will come into focus as part of an exhibition curated by a Birmingham City University academic that opens in Shanghai, China.

Professor Jiang Jiehong, Director of the University’s Centre for Chinese Visual Arts has been working with independent curator Mark Nash to create ‘The Shadow Never Lies’, which features works from 35 different artists from countries around the world, including Australia, Palestine, South Africa, UK and USA. Showcasing a mixture of styles, the artwork is linked by the concept of ‘yingxiang’, a Chinese word that translates literally as ‘shadow image’ in English. Within the context of contemporary art, ‘yingxiang’ refers to visual media including photography, video, film and animation – whether produced through traditional or digital techniques.

‘The Shadow Never Lies’ sets out to to explore the concept of ‘yingxiang’ beyond its simple definition of a visual medium.

To many, what we see in a photograph is ‘true’, and the foremost function of ‘yingxiang’ is to record this reality both visually and durationally.

However, the ‘objectivity’ and the ‘materiality’ of ‘yingxiang’ do not necessarily provide ‘truthfulness’, while the practical production process, if regarded as merely mechanical, can act as a mask for its ‘objective’ appearance. The artwork on display in ‘The Shadow Never Lies’ will showcase to audiences how ‘yingxiang’ fabricates and interprets a different reality than what is initially seen by a viewer.

Jiang Jiehong, Professor of Chinese Art and Director of the Centre for Chinese Visual Arts, Birmingham City University, said: “In art there are different aesthetic traditions and cultural understandings of shadows between East and West.

I deliberately wanted this to be an exhibition that represented artists from around the world. It is designed to show how concepts and their artistic preoccupations cross political and cultural boundaries.”

Shanghai-born Professor Jiang is a leading world figure in research on contemporary Chinese art and visual culture.

In 2007, he set up the Centre for Chinese Visual Arts art Birmingham City University, which constructs a unique academic network with two leading art institutions in China – Central Academy of Fine Arts in Beijing (CAFA) and China

Academy of Arts in Hangzhou (CAA). As a respected curator, he has led on exhibitions at CAFA Art Museum in Beijing, Guangdong Art Museum and the 4th Guangzhou Triennial.

‘The Shadow Never Lies’ opened to the public on Saturday 30 April at the Shanghai 21st Century Minsheng Art Museum (M21). Located in the former French pavilion of the 2010 World Expo, the museum was established with the purpose of promoting contemporary art and culture, as well as to break down the traditional barriers between art and the general public.

In September 2016, Birmingham City University will launch its MA Contemporary Arts China course, the first of its kind in Europe. The course will aim to foster innovative perspectives and new understandings of Chinese contemporary art, design, visual culture and contemporary China, through transdisciplinary practice, research training and professional development.

In China itself, Birmingham City University will open its first overseas transnational educational institute in Wuhan later this year. Birmingham Institute of Fashion and Creative Art, a partnership between Birmingham City University and Wuhan Textile University, will welcome its first 300 students in September.

A survey of graduates from the PGA and University of Birming-

ham’s Applied Golf Management Studies honours degree shows they would rank third in the IFS table which rated degrees in terms of earnings potential.

The AGMS survey highlighted the opportunities in golf by revealing that average earnings for those AGMS graduates with PGA membership, and working in the golf industry, were £34,595 – the next highest was engineering and technology with men earning on average £31,200.

AGMS graduates working in golf but who were not PGA Members earned £10,000 less with an average salary of £23,727. The mean salary across all respondents was nearly £30,000.

The survey of nearly 100 AGMS graduates showed 82 per cent were working in the golf industry with 56 per cent full PGA Members.

Findings also showed 19 AGMS graduates were employed overseas in eight different countries and earned an average of £33,968.

skills development manager and AGMS programme manager, commented: “Our research shows that AGMS is an excellent qualification that allied with PGA Membership leads to earning potential that compares favourably with many other degrees and also leads to worldwide employment opportunities.

With a recent economic impact report from Sheffield University showing that golfers in the UK spend £4.3 billion per year, golf clearly has many career choices for those with the knowledge and expertise in golf and AGMS graduates’ success in this field clearly reflects the strength and standing of the degree.”

Dr Martin Toms, from the University of Birmingham, added: “Our graduates are of the highest calibre and it is testament to them that their salaries reflect that. Also, with golf participation set to be boosted with its inclusion in the Rio Olympics, it is an exciting time to be going into the field with qualifications that are recognised globally.”

During the 1940’s Europe was recovering from the ravages of World War 2. The then Prime Minister Winston Churchill called on the Commonwealth countries for manpower to help rebuild the infrastructure and fill the employment shortages in State-run services.

Our parents responded to the recruitment drive and amongst them were many who had served in the armed forces.

On June 22nd 1948 the ex-troop ship, the Empire Windrush, carrying passengers - the first of a wave of immigrants from the Caribbean - to Tilbury dock in London.

They were full of hope and anticipation. It was an opportunity to travel and, more importantly, a chance to create a future for themselves and relatives who remained back home.

he Arthur Terry School welcomed three prestigious guests when a senior delegation, led by Sri Lanka’s education secretary, visited the outstanding academy.

As part of a visit to the UK, the officials were invited to share their expertise and learn more about the high performing academy and the UK education system W M Bandusena, secretary to the Ministry of Education (MoE), L M D Dharmasena, chief commissioner (teacher education), MoE, and the British Council’s Shane Martenstyn, assistant manager of programme delivery, spent an educational day at Arthur Terry.

The visit was part of a joint fact finding mission to share best practice, strengthen international links and develop a greater understanding of education and teacher training in both countries.

The distinguished trio met with headteacher Neil Warner and other staff, pupils and leaders from the acclaimed Arthur Terry National Teaching School.

The officials were keen to learn more about a number of key areas, including the UK education system, the Arthur Terry Learning Partnership (ATLP), the school curriculum and teaching schools, with a view to developing even stronger links between all

Later they would actively participate in organisations including trades unions and local councils, where they might be able to influence policies that affected them.

One major problem was the racism and prejudices they experienced. This filtered down and affected living spaces, which led many of our parents to crowded and unsuitable dwellings.

More suitable forms of accommodation later presented itself and after a period of time our parents purchased their own properties.

The realities of starting families in the U.K. meant that their children went through the schooling system. Obligations were met, and the need for permanent employment would mean that, the once short term goals in the west, turned out to be lifelong committeemen’s leading to them adopting British Citizenship.

The obvious climatic change also proved to be a challenge, and low paid work

often meant multiple jobs to make ends meet.

During the retirement years, many elders returned to their place of birth, a second home abroad, maintain strong links to their homeland, which eventually led many to repatriation.

In our culture, the cycle of family life for all generations is practiced. The old carry the great secrets of the experience of life, if you are willing to hear!

Ultimately, a race is determined by its treatment of its elders and most vulnerable.

On behalf of all the descendants of the Caribbean family, I would like to simply say ‘THANK YOU’. ‘THANK YOU’ for all you have done for us. It is for us, now, to take the baton and create a future for our children.

The Sankofa, the bird that always looks back, never neglecting its elders, who have paved the way to our present day.

Our elders have overcome many injustices along the way, so that we could have better tomorrows.

Again `THANK YOU`.

Art Students Celebrate Success with Pop-up Exhibition l Walsall College Art and Design student, Jada Campbell-McFarlane,19, with her piece titled ‘The beginning of the end’, which is inspired by black history.

W

alsall College Foundation Art and Design students showcased their creative talents in a pop-up exhibition in Walsall town centre, as they celebrated the success they have achieved on the course.

The class, who have all received offers from top universities, took up temporary residency in an empty unit in the Old Square Shopping Centre in March covering a broad range of

areas including printmaking, fashion and textiles, graphics, photography, 3D design and fine art and was a chance for students coming towards the end of the BTEC Foundation Art and Design course to show off work they’ve created for their final major projects.

Next year, the students will be going to university to study a range of different art related degrees including architecture, graphic design, fashion, animation, interior design and fine

art.

Alan Tyler, Curriculum Manager for Creative Industries at Walsall College said: “Our pre-degree foundation art and design course is a great vehicle for students to explore a range of different mediums and then choose a specialist pathway for their final project. It also encourages independence in their work in preparation for study at a higher level.

There is a strong culture of progression on this programme as the course

is highly recognised by the competitive universities and art schools. This year we have seen a higher number of students on the course who either already have an A-level in art but want more experience before going to university and those who had initially studied non art related courses after school.”

Student, Meera Popat, 18, said: “I did my A-levels in History, Psychology and Literature at school, but regretted my decision not to do Art. When looking at different options, this one year course seemed the ideal way to build up my portfolio and work towards a career in the industry.

I feel like I’ve come a long way since I started and have had offers from a few universities, but I’m just waiting to hear if I’ve been accepted on a place at the London School of Fashion.”

Jada Campbell-McFarlane, 19, also wished she had done Art instead of choosing Health and Social Care.

She said: “I realised I didn’t want to follow a career in health and social care and had always had an interest in fashion so decide to explore this.

I’ve enjoyed every aspect of the course and I can now see a future for myself as a designer.

Next year I will be studying at the exclusive Istituto Marangoni in London, a specialist fashion school.

Alan added: “The pop-up exhibition gave students a chance to celebrate their success and discuss with members of the public and prospective students, the inspiration behind their pieces and the direction they have chosen to go in with their art.”

It was fascinating to learn the steps being taken to revolutionise farming methods, with the emphasis on attracting more young people to this industry.

The concept of agro or agri-entrepreneurship has become part of the modern lexicon, as emerging democracies make attempts to revive this ‘sleeping behemoth’.

So why is the interest in agriculture not very popular (as an enterprise) in developed economies such as the UK? Firstly, the National Federation of Young Farmers’ Clubs or the ‘NFYFC organise activities for young farmers and their communities.

Secondly, there are 630 such clubs across England and Wales, and yet the activities of these organisations seem to remain ‘a trade secret’.

The radio program ‘Farming Today’ and TV biz documentaries seldom publicise the contribution these groups are making to society as a whole.

tonishing with over 60% of adults overweight, costing the NHS £2.3 billion per annum (and rising).

So the necessity for quality food to improve the nation’s nutritional status, is more than an understatement.

Food security is now an important issue on the global economic agenda, and it is therefore opportune for UK authorities to encourage and stimulate young people’s interest in agriculture as a modern enterprise.

Through the cultivation and general use of the land, young people can be orientated in multiple ways: • Learn more about, and from the environment or natural habitat.

• Gain insights into key segments of agriculture such as horticulture, agronomy and livestock sciences.

• Information on animal and crop husbandry practices such as crop rotation, tissue culture and intensive agriculture.

• Be conversant with traditional business principles inter alia accounting, marketing, distribution and supply and quality control etc.

Although food and drinks are important to our daily survival, agriculture makes up less than 5% of the UK’s economic activities.

It is also a subject that is not prioritised in the education cur-

riculum.

For years, there have been an inundation of campaigns and policy initiatives around ‘Every Child Matters’, ‘Go Green’, ‘Fair Trade’, ‘Healthy Eating’ and more.

Yet there appears to be little appetite nationally, to promote agriculture as a science and more so, as a genuine enterprise particularly for the young unemployed in inner-cities and suburbs.

Perhaps one example of initiating action, is to organise a national ‘youth agripreneur’ program to identify young people with an interest in both the environment and self-employment.

The project can revolve around providing a ‘seed fund’ to facilitate the start-up of the project itself.

Young people could be mentored, linking them with seasoned researchers and practitioners in various fields of agriculture.

Along with the national young farmers’ organisation, potential youths could be integral to a cadre of young professional agriculturalists, to add value to farming-related activities, UK-wide.

Migrant-settler communities are familiar with land ownership and agriculture as an extension of such tenure.

The lack of interest amongst the majority of young people from this section of British society in agricultural sciences, is indeed one of consternation.

he weather brought out its best face for the St George’s Day Parade in Sandwell, in the West Midlands, starting with a rendition of God Save The Queen in honour of Her Royal Highness’ 90th birthday.

There was no St. George’s Day parade in Birmingham so this year’s colourful Stone Cross celebrations saw more than 3,000 family members, friends and ex-Servicemen, as well as the Northfield Caledonia Pipes & Drums, join the 1.8-mile morning walk to Dartmouth Park, in West Bromwich, to pay homage to the Patron Saint of England.

England in My Heart campaign director, Eddie Bone,

made an impassioned plea for a national Bank Holiday in recognition of St George and an English national anthem, said; “Today is a day for England, not Scotland, Wales or Ireland.

We are the second lowest country in the world for Bank Holidays and have the fewest number in Europe so a Bank Holiday for St George’s Day would be great for pubs – and

there’s room for a date in the calendar.”

The vast majority of the heaving crowd waved English ‘Red Cross’ flags as they also sang along a rendition of ‘Jerusalem’ – as well as ‘God Save The Queen’ during the parade.

Among those who attended were veterans from the armed forces and the Royal British Legion and a special appearance by West Bromwich Albion’s Baggie Bird who posed for selfies with children along with Georgie The Dragon.

One reveler, Mark Cowles, said; “It was a fantastic day at the Stone Cross St Georges Day Parade & Ride out for all I can say is ‘Thanks to all who attended.’ Yowm all were bostin."

he theme of leadership excellence continues in this column, the focus of this article is on integrity.

A leader without integrity lacks credibility and authenticity.

What is Integrity?

Integrity is often thought of as moral uprightness and steadfastness—making the “good” choices, doing the “right thing.”

Integrity is a home, an anchor, a continuing commitment —a way of being and acting that shapes who you are.

The bottom line in regard to integrity, you will discover that integrity resides in the ability to establish yourself as your word, to be true to your principles, and ultimately, be true to yourself.

I come from a family business background which has helped me with my own companies and being able to work with communities of all cultures and backgrounds to help, support and develop their work enabling them to fulfil their potential.

My educational background is Theatre and dance where I have not only performed on main stages as a dancer and also on TV for known Asian channels as an actor, but developed my career further as a workshop leader and trainer, Script writer, Director, Choreographer and Model.

Through 1Nation I have received awards such as a positive role model for my work with taboo and sensitive subjects for health authorities working with vulnerable young people from diverse communities, where not only have I been challenged but also been able to overcome barriers and make a difference with projects.

I have worked on such topics as Sexual Health, Domestic Violence, Children with Disabilities, Drugs and Alcohol plus more by writing plays based on my research

and also produced Educational DVDs that has helped raise awareness.

Having the understanding of communities I have now developed the direction of my work into PR promotions for the music industry and professional companies, Events management and as a Beauty specialist.

I also do a lot for Charities by participating in various activities like volunteering feeding the homeless and raising money by taking part in the half marathon and short runs every year without fail.

Nation Media would like to introduce Harjit Singh Badachha (pronounced, Badesha and H.B. for short).

Harjit has lived in Derbyshire virtually all of his life and very

much loves it there. He is a fun loving person that values all cultures and very much respects his own Punjabi roots; Hence one of his main passions in life is the Punjabi music in all its genres, as well as music in general.

Like most people he does have many other interests other than music, including watching and playing most sports, his favourite being football.

He loves to socialise and get involved in all sorts but a little less nowadays and just so that he can concentrate more on his singing and music.

In the past Harjit was fortunate enough to be involved in the music circuit where he got to sing at big gigs, like the WOMAD, Reading and Leeds festivals.

“These were some mega fun times, doing these gigs with The Pardesi Boys, travelling to destinations like Denmark, Sweden, Kenya and more to perform in front of fantastic audiences also at all the big Mela’s during the summer seasons as well as doing the big Zee Shows.”

Playing at the Centenary Celebrations in Birmingham as the only Bhangra Band in 1999 is a memory he will always cherish and remember.

In his current venture, he is in the process of launching his new

track’ SelFie’ (with more tracks to come).

With this new offering, his sound, delivery and singing style has been transformed into a more Punjabi Traditional feel and to meet with the ‘Now in Trend’, Hard Hitting Lyrics, music and vocals which he hopes people of all ages will enjoy.

Harjit would just like to thank all the Derby Bhangra Dancers, the Break Dancers, the Models and all the people that contributed making the SelFie Video, Music Director Amandeep Singh and Lyricist Pirti Silo for all their fantastic work.

The History and Ethos of the Young Professional Women’s Group Raising the Ordinary to Extraordinary

T

he Young Professional Women’s Group was established in October 2014 by Sinita Kandola.

Sinita has been part of the Financial Industry for 6 years now and is currently a trainee investment manager going through her exams.

During this time she has overcome and conquered a number of challenges she faced to pursue her career.

A typical ‘stockbroker/investment manager’ is a white middle aged man, however Sinita is a young Indian female who struggled to be taken seriously by peers and contacts.

As she spent her time networking she met many young women who are striving to enhance their careers but are facing challenges in their own industries and are not fortunate to have the same network of support she had.

Therefore she set up the Young Professional Women’s Group so she could inspire these young professionals and help them realise their full potential.

Although named “Young Professional” the group does not have a set age range for members.

Sinita recognises that women could be in their forties and have decided to change their career path but need the support to develop in their new goals.

Their aim is to support professional women from all backgrounds in becoming successful in their chosen careers, equipping them with skills and knowledge that will help them to de-

velop professionally. They do this by way of meetings and workshops that cater for the group’s needs.

Organisation ethos is centred on requirements of the individuals and they provide a confidential forum where the ladies can speak freely about any personal or professional matters they may have.

The group has already helped a number of women build their self-esteem and find their inner strength – many of whom are now in more senior roles and are reaching bigger and better heights.

Helping guide young professionals is an amazing feeling, but for Sinita the icing on the cake is seeing them put all that hard work into practice and reap the benefits.

They have held a number of meetings and workshops covering a range of topics such as confidence building, how to be politically aware in the workplace, resolving conflicts, public speaking and how to market yourself.

Commenting on the success of YPWG, Sinita said, “I love supporting talented young professionals across all industries. The success of YPWG so far illustrates that there are lots of young women in Birmingham’s commercial sector who are hungry for the advice, support and connectivity that this type of group can provide.”

“We’ve had great feedback from our members this year and I am very excited about building our membership.”

Sinita’s future aspirations for the group is to expand our network to support young women in schools and higher education and inspire the next generation of business leaders – helping them understand sky is the limit and no dream is impossible.

She also wants to capitalise on their ever growing reputation and bring on board the biggest and best through leaders who have faced similar barriers to use their experiences and knowledge to help inspire young professionals everywhere.

To celebrate their successful inaugural year, YPWG are hosting an Asian Themed Launch Party on Friday 20th May at The Burlington Hotel, Birmingham.

The event aims to showcase the work of the group, raise money for Ladies Fighting Breast Cancer, the group’s charity of the year, and raise awareness of a new initiative called Cysters.

The founder of Cysters is a member of YPWG and as this is a women’s support and awareness group looking at all gynaecological health issues and the stigma surrounding it especially in the BAME community this fitted in nicely with the theme of the event and Ladies Fighting Breast Cancer.

The Black Tie Ball is aimed at women but we encourage men to attend to understand and gain more knowledge and insight on female health issues.

and tested fable and somehow breathes new life into a story none of us knew needed it.

If you take a look back through Favreau’s previous work, it’s plain to see that he has always been a director who has the ability to amalgamate several genres into one movie with great success, but The Jungle Book is his most confident work to date.

Treading a fine line between drama, comedy, action, adventure and fantasy, this particular version of The Jungle Book may not have worked in the hands of a lesser director.

A live-action movie starring a real child interacting with walking, talking, singing, dancing computer-generated animals seems like a recipe for a cheesefilled disaster, yet Favreau and company manage to defy the odds and deliver a gorgeous movie that’s equal parts fun, nostalgic, heart-warming, thought-provok-

ing and frightening.

The talking animals never seem out of place in the world they inhabit and that’s because Favreau hits the audience with it almost immediately, as if to say “Yes, this is a live-action movie. Yes, there are big scary animals in it and yes, they can all talk. Deal with it!”

By introducing the animals to us so early on, the filmmakers can then build a world around them in which they inhabit, as opposed to building a world first and then trying to shoehorn these characters in to that world.

The visual effects in this movie are absolutely breathtaking and they are combined with live-action footage seamlessly, serving to enhance the real-world footage as opposed to distracting from it.

Ben Kingsley keeps it brilliantly low-key as Bagheera, the frightfully British panther with a stiff upper lip.

Giancarlo Esposito and Lupita Nyong’o are wonderful as Mowgli’s adoptive wolf-parents

Akela and Raksha, who care so deeply for their little man-cub that it is difficult not to get emotionally attached.

Christopher Walken laps it up as ape-come-Mafioso mob boss King Louie, the Don Vito Corleone of the jungle and Scarlett Johansson, while only in it briefly, makes a lasting impression by lending her husky, seductive voice to the hypnotic snake, Kaa. Idris Elba absolutely kills it as Shere Khan; bringing a power and fierceness to the role that has never been captured in any other version of The Jungle Book.

Even in the midst of all of the singing and laughter, his intensity isn’t lost. There is absolutely nothing redeeming about him; he is nothing more than a savage, coldblooded killer and it is fantastic.

Shere Khan may even be the movie villain of year and it will take something truly special to take that crown away from him.

“What about Bill Murray?” I hear you ask. Well, whoever decided to cast Bill Murray as the fast-talking, wise-cracking and downright loveable bear Baloo deserves a promotion or a medal, or at the very least a cuddle because that may very well be the most inspired casting in recent memory.

As soon as his casting was announced, it just made sense. You didn’t even need to be told which character he would be playing, because you just knew and, as expected, he’s perfect.

Now, let’s move on to the star of the show; the young revelation himself - Neel Sethi. It’s difficult to put in to words what this young man has accomplished here.

Not only is this his first feature film, but it is a feature film in which almost everything he is talking, reacting and responding to is entirely computer-generated.

Meaning that most of the time, this inexperienced young actor was merely walking in front of a green screen with and talking to a reference point that, after months of painstaking visual effects work, would eventually become a walking, talking animal.

In a way, little Neel Sethi is alone in this movie, but it never feels that way. He delivers his dialogue with such sincerity, it’s like everything around him is real, which also pulls us deeper into his story.

As the only human being actually in the movie, the whole thing is resting on Neel Sethi’s shoulders and he carries it like it’s nothing.

The Jungle Book is everything you’re hoping for, and more. It brings all of the fun, adventure and yes, even songs from Disney’s animated classic but also brings with it a visceral edge that will make it just as enjoyable for more mature audience members.

One can only hope that the success of this movie leads to further live-action adaptations of Disney Classics. The Lion King, anyone?

fter over 20 years of service to the international, national and local artistic community, audiences and the wider BAME community, premier inter-cultural arts and theatre centre, The Drum Arts/Theatre Centre, in Birmingham will be wind-down, unless a new source of funding can be found.

A combination of challenges including the current financial climate left the board with no viable alternatives. Majority funder, Arts Council England was present where the final resolution for wind-down and liquidation was passed.

Sharon Palmer MBE, Chair of the Board, stated: “After months of undergoing an organisational review, staff restructures, consultations with staff and external stakeholders, alongside constant negotiations with funders, we can assure the community, staff and supporters that this decision was not taken lightly.

Both myself and the board of trustees genuinely feel for everyone affected by this decision, especially for all staff members past and present who have dedicated themselves over the years, and to artists who provided the cultural heart to audiences, young people and parents.”

A community stakeholder, said: "The issues relating to The Drum are very emotive in the community... this is not the platform for recrimination and much can be learnt from this experience as it will enable us, collectively and as individuals to grow stronger and ensure that our cultural facilities are not flitted away as the fall out is not worth thinking about."

Peter Knott, Area Director, Arts Council England, said: “We understand that this is a challenging and distressing time for the organisation and individuals involved.

We remain committed to ensuring that Aston’s communities continue to have access to great arts and culture, and will continue to work with our key partner Birmingham City Council to maintain our investment in the area."

The Drum, organised the annual Simmer Down Festival in Handsworth Park, which had Steel Pulse, Aswad, Maxi Priest, and Apache Indian on stage.

It also boasted the John Simmit-inspired Upfront Comedy Club with performances from the likes actor/ comedian Richard Blackwood, plus hosting international singers including Laura Mvula and Mary Wilson.

The Drum will close next month (June).

Prince the latest in a growing list to depart in 2016 introduced his trademark deep synth funk sound after releasing his debut album, ‘For You,’ in 1978, followed by ‘Prince’ (1979), ‘Dirty Mind’ (1980) and ‘Controversy’ (1981), but came to world prominence with his multi-award winning album ‘Purple Rain,’ which garnered him with Grammy, Oscar, BRIT, Image and World Soundtrack awards in 1985.

‘Sign o' the Times,’ ‘Lovesexy,’ ‘Batman,’ ‘Graffiti Bridge,’ ‘Diamonds and Pearls,’ ‘Love Symbol Album’ and ‘Emancipation’ were just some of the hugely successful albums which cemented his position as the unique best, in

his field, throughout the 1990s.

‘One Nite Alone,’ ‘Xpectation,’ ‘N.E.W.S,’ ‘Musicology,’ ‘The Chocolate Invasion,’ ‘Planet Earth’ and ‘20Ten,’ again, just ‘touched the surface’ by way of the number of albums he did, during this century alone.

Prince has left a mighty chasm in the hearts of millions around the world – and, of equal proportions…in their music box too.

The world of entertainment will never see the likes again.

The same too can be said of David B, Alan, Paul, David G, Ronnie, Victoria and Percy.

t’s proving to be a solemn year with April’s noted passing of Funk/ Rock ‘God,’ Prince, who superseded that – almost within hours - of comedienne Victoria Wood and soul singer Percy Sledge.

The death of ‘The Purple One,’ might have caused greater reverberations throughout the entertainment world, but the loss of the lyrical genius that is Victoria and the soul legend with the smoothest of voices is showing a rise in the number of significant celebrity death being reported for this year – so far.

From David Bowie in the second week of January, to actor Alan Rickman a week later, then magician Paul Daniels, American entertainer, comedian and producer David Guest and ‘pocket-sized’ comedy giant Ronnie Corbett, 2016 has already been a year where, already, too many of the great and the very good, in entertainment, have left this mortal coil leaving memories of their genius and – for many – a deep hole in their hearts.

The departure of Prince Rogers Nelson, one of the most prolific artists in music – EVER! - proved ‘sudden’ at the extreme, releasing 39 studio albums, including four in the last 18 months and enough completed works locked away in a vault to see him release one album a year – for a generation, or two.

A child prodigy self-taught on dozens of instruments, from the piano to the guitar, bass and drums, the diminutive figure, with the giant personality,

he smell of incense, the sound and feel of lowpitched vibrations, a procession of Matriarchs slowly processes around the stage chanting in the clicks and split tones of their native Xhosa.

A gaunt, skeletal, emaciated, figure slowly wanders silently; a bare stage floor suggestive of ancient soil on which the outline of a wooden hut stands, revolves slowly.

The timeless world of ancient Africa in an unnamed country in the late colonial period.

The unseen Doctor Neilsen brings the rudiments of hygiene and health care to the community.

His wife is a missionary, a solitary doctor administers care to the villagers.

This is Les Blancs by the Afro-American writer Lorraine Hansberry, unfinished when she died of cancer in 1965 at the early age of 34.

Her importance was to be the first woman, let alone woman of colour, to be produced on Broadway.

Les Blancs is ambitious in its epic scale and confrontation of

racism, colonialism, racial and gender identity and the conflicts between loyalties to family, country or a cause.

On the same day, an American writer and photographer, Charles Morris, and a long exiled Tshembe Matoseh arrive.

Morris is after a story about the mission, which he hopes will make him a name.

He starts by photographing everything and everyone he sees, insensitive to the idea of asking for permission.

Tshembe has left a European wife and child at what he now calls home to do honour to his recently dead father, a patriarch of the community.

The action revolves around Tshembe’s conflicts about his cultural roots, his European family and where he really belongs.

One of his brothers has become a Catholic priest, another (a halfbrother resulting from the rape of his mother by a European) has issues about both his cultural and gender identity.

The country is in a state of change as the colonial forces become increasingly draconian in their enforcement of martial law and the local population groups together in attempted rebellion. It

7. He also launched Scottish-born talent show winner, Sheila Easton’s world-wide pop career into the stratosphere.

8. When he puts on a show, it’s one you will remember for a lifetime – and beyond.

9. He was such a hard work in the game that he has so much untapped music locked away in his vault to make up generations worth of albums.

10. ‘…His name is Prince, the one and only’

does not end happily.

The play alternates between the ritualistic: the chanting of the matriarchs, the attention paid to preparing a body for burial, the administering of health care; impressive but wordy scenes of dialogue, usually between just two characters in which the problems of individuals and country are debated at length.

Finally the moments of action which intervene in increasing violent and shocking ways demonstrate that talking inevitably gives way to destruction and chaos.

The set revolves hypnotically to remind us of passing time taking us from the mission where the Europeans dominate, to a more intimate local village scene.

At first slow moving with long pauses when words are submerged by the impressive sound world of the matriarchs and almost subliminal, because felt as much as heard, underscoring, the increasingly threatening external action culminates in scenes of what we realise are inevitable violence.

An impressive cast is led by the charismatic Danny Sapani as Tshembe, Elliot Cowan as Morris Clive Francis as Major Rice, the representative of the colonial power, and Sian Phillips as Madame Neilsen.

A seasoned pageant contestant herself, Trishana decided to take all of the best parts of the pageants she has been a part of, and put them all into one pageant that will set the bar for others.

“I’ve learnt from my experiences to improve upon my own pageant,” beams Trishana, “myself and my mum, we do it as a

team.”

With 11 islands to be represented at this years event across both the male and female categories, there has been no short of logistical work for Trishana and her team to organise since the pageants conception in December 2015 as she

The focus being on the geographical area in which Lee Valley Estates have operated for over 27 years.

These factors are summarised in the Foundation’s Mission Statement: “To work with young people from North London and the Lee Valley Corridor to help them achieve above and beyond society’s expectation of them in terms of work, leisure and their community”.

Karen explained that she and Michael had talked about this idea for about 10 years so they went on to plan their aims which included helping young people to find employment and further education.

When Michael retired, LVE Foundation came into being and the fundraising and planning began.

Karen continues to play a major role in canvassing for funding, planning events and managing events as LVE Foundation’s CEO.

The youths are referred to the Foundation via job centres and Waltham Forest Young Carers Association.

The support from LVE Foundation is made available in many forms, for example: work placement, training, mentoring, financial advice etc.

This support is designed to fit each individuals needs. “We believe in being flexible. We believe that our young people are the entrepreneurs, community leaders, innovators, role-models, employers and work force of the future.”

“So far since launching we have held a fundraiser, sponsored a three day Black History event in October, we have sponsored an International Women’s Day event at the Great Hall in the Legacy Business Centre in Leyton, we have given out grants to a music project and helped nine young people set up their own not for profit mentoring project by giving them one2one business advice and a grant to set up, this including money for insurance and DBS checks plus hot-desking space.”

“We are hoping our plan to, in the next six weeks the mentors will start to take on their first tranche of mentees. We are really excited that the Foundation will also be working with businesses in the City to take young people for business awareness weeks and working to get them into real paid and supported work.”

Karen adds that LVE Foundation is working with Waltham Forest, Haringey and Edmonton Councils and Job Centres. “It is so rewarding to be surrounded by such positive people.”

“I am extremely grateful to have known Karen for so long and that she and Michael Polledri have made such a difference in the lives of people within my borough. They continue to work tirelessly with their passion for helping young people, in the hopes of “creating more leaders and ultimately creating a cycle of LVE Foundation mentees becom-

B

irmingham is the most cosmopolitan and vibrant city in Europe and a cornerstone of the city’s success is that of its citizens celebrating their heritage together.

So, with that in mind, the streets of Birmingham were decked with bright colours, music and dancing as thousands of Sikhs converged onto Soho Road for a mass holy street procession – starting from Hockley and Smethwick through to Handsworth Park for the annual Vaisakhi Nagar Keertan festival.

At the head of each procession was the Guru Granth Sahib (The Holy Book of Revelation) led by five Sikhs dressed in ceremonial dress to represent the five original Panj Pyare (The Beloved Ones) who founded the order of the Khalsa.

They came from around the country to take part in what proved to be the ultimate outdoor party as men, women and children were catered for with food, music, entertainment, charity stalls, sports, prayers, Sikh cultural activities and a full-on funfair to make this the best ever.

Amrick Singh Ubhi, Chair of the Council of Sikh Gurdwaras, Birmingham, and Centre Director at the Nishkam Centre on Soho Road said; “The Birmingham Vaisakhi Celebrations, marking one of the most important days in the Sikh calendar, have become a landmark event in the city, the UK and internationally boasting one of the largest festivals in Europe and outside India.

As one of the most cosmopolitan cities in Europe, these celebrations have always been a demonstration of community cohesion in practice. We continue to engage with people of all faiths and background of our great city to ensure peace, harmony and unity for all."

Of all the community-led events which have taken place in the park this a not-for-profit community event proved to be the epitome of a community working together as, with many other organisations, the lack of funding to the level they were once afforded, by their local Birmingham City Council, wasn’t as it once was.

That was never going to be a stumbling block or an excuse – or indeed, a reason to ever cancel

“The whole ethos of the event is about promoting community and family spirit, a sense of unity, sharing, interfaith and cohesiveness; something very much needed at this time around the world," Amrick went on to say.

“To this end, we were proud to share and invite all attendees to experience the event and partake in Guru Ka Langar (free food selflessly prepared and served by volunteers), visit the Gurdwara in the Park, see the trading and information stalls, the children’s funfair and the many more exciting events which took part on the day."

In fact, it gave reason to, byin-large, self-fund it and make it bigger and better than ever before – something that, with shared community cohesion, will always prove the best way, neh, the only way forward.

An estimated 100,000 people were said to have attended this year to mark the Sikh New Year, thanks in no small part to The Council of Sikh Gurdwaras in Birmingham – who is celebrating its 25th Anniversary, businesses, community groups and individu-

als putting their financial backs to make sure this would remain one of the city’s biggest ever outdoor free event.

It also gave all business and industry players a prominent and visible role in the event through tailor-made sponsorship opportunities.

Catering for all who attended – and upholding the whole purpose of Vaisakhi, amongst the fantastic array of fun and frivolities, in the middle of Handsworth Park was an area for worship (Darbar), an important focal point for the day, which was open to all communities to visit and understand the Sikh faith.

Nishkam Centre Director, Amrick, concluded; “The Council of Sikh Gurdwaras Birmingham (CSGB) is proud of the Vaisakhi Celebrations that have taken place here in Birmingham for 25 years. The event was the culmination of many months of work with our partners including the City Council, WM Police, traders, sponsors, supporters and the many volunteers."

But does screening Life of Brian make him ‘A very naughty boy?’

A

vicar sparked outrage among his flock with plans to screen the controversial Monty Python classic The Life of Brian - in church.

The satirical comedy film branded anti-Christian and 'blasphemous' when it was released in 1979 - will be played at All Saints' Parish Church in Royal Leamington Spa, Warwickshire.

There will also be a concert called 'Music You Don't Normally Hear On A Church Organ' in a bid to raise funds for repairs to the religious building.

Father Christopher Wilson said; "Showing The Life of Brian - which tells the story of young Jewish man being mistaken as the Messiah - is an attempt for the church to laugh at ourselves."

On its release, in 1979, the film sparked protests from religious groups and 39 local authorities in the UK either imposed an outright ban, or gave it an 18 certificate - effectively preventing the film from being shown as the distributors said it could not be screened unless it was unedited and carried the original 14 certificate.

The film was so controversial

countries including Ireland and Norway banned its screening making it being a box-office hit and the fourthhighest grossing film in the UK in 1979 and the highest grosser of any British film in the United States that year.

The Life of Brian is set to be shown at the church, with tickets being sold for £10.

All Saints' Parish Church regulars said the screening of the contentious film will upset many people, while others have questioned why a church is an appropriate venue to show an 'offensive' and 'anti-Christian film.'

Why do some churches grow so much more than others?

T

he answer is apart from prayer and fasting and hard work, with robust strategic administration in place.

What is Strategic Administration? Well, think President Obama! When he speaks about his operations he refers to his administration not his department or the White House. His administration helps him to achieve the Vision of his presidency. It should be no different for local churches.

Strategic Administration is how the WHOLE organisation interacts and works together for common good making it more productive and successful.

If for example you have people attending your church, but don't know where they are, how to contact them that MIGHT be looked upon as just Admin Office not doing their job BUT if it carries on, it affects the whole ministry so you're unable to plan for the

future.

What about your structure? Are you a charity, social enterprise, Limited Company or unregistered AND is your legal status right for the activities you are carrying out e.g. Are you carry out charitable works in the community, but not receiving funding?

Strategic Administration is a huge issue and churches that get it right are the ones who are able to win souls and maintain them to discipleship AND plant other churches.

Another example: Do you employ staff or have volunteers? Do they all know what's expected of them? Do they have a person spec? Do you know what that is?

These examples all come under the Strategic Administration banner. There are so many other examples which will be covered on May 14 in the Strategic Administration Workshop for Leaders.

In all ramifications, Daddy Hezekiah is a unique personality and stands out as the only Man of God that is proclaimed

by God and not human beings as Prophet Samuel in the Bible.

He is holy, consecrated, and married to our Lord and Saviour Jesus Christ. He preaches the undiluted word of God and does not believe in segregation but treats all hu-

Daddy Hezekiah was the first foreigner at the prestigious University of Zambia, Lusaka to hold the post of President of the Campus Christian Fellowship and after his graduation, he was invited to the State House by late President Kenneth Kaunda in 1979 to pray for him.

Conventionally, recipients of awards are invited to the place of the awardees like in February 14, 2008, when Daddy Hezekiah was given MFR by the late President Umaru Musa Yar’adua, he travelled to

Abuja to receive it.

Daddy Hezekiah is the first church leader in Nigeria to refurbish a police station and hand it over to the Nigerian Police in 1999.

He is also the first church leader in the memory of history in Nigeria to rebuild a Mosque for the Muslims, which was gutted by fire in 1997 because he believes in the philosophy of live and let live.

He donated 30,000 dollars to the United States Government during the September 11th 2001 attack. He donated 20,000 dollars to the Israeli Government in their fight against terrorism in April, 2002.

He donated 3.5 million Naira to the Information and Communication Technology Centre of the Nnamdi Azikiwe University, Awka Anambra State, Nigeria (UNIZIK) on 14th April, 2005.

In December 2000, he used the sum of Two Hundred Thousand Naira (N200,000.00) to refurbish and furnish the NUJ Library in Imo State Nigeria which is now named after him.

Daddy Hezekiah truly deserves all the good things that the Lord has given him and we rejoice with him.

ith UK-based charity, Mind, finding that local authorities in England spend an average of 1.36 per cent of their public health budget on mental health, the situation in many other countries would appear even worse – to none-existing.

For that, the work of Reconnect Health Development Initiative, ReconnectHDI, is far greater and fully deserved of attention and ongoing support.

And, with that in mind, the NGO (None Government Organisation) is working diligently, both home and abroad, towards creating awareness to help address the issue of stigma as it relates to mental health and inform, advocate and enable access to quality mental health services and be a signpost for people suffering from psychological and drug challenges.

Also in place is APLY Program About People Like You - an educational, awareness and empowerment program that targets educational institutions as well as youth prevalent organizations to allow for discussions on psychological issues that might affect them such as drug abuse and sexual abuse, contributing to the achievement of broader health goals of preventing poor health outcomes and is structured to fit into school curriculums through a club that will be individually established in schools.

DR Asaf Khan said he was aware of NGOs in Pakistan who will want to partner with Reconnect and he will facilitate it. Attendees at the dinner were hugely impressed with the work Vincent and his team are doing, and want to work together, with Reconnect HDI, to make the operative a worldwide initiative for people with drug abuse and mental health issues..

There is a Reconnect mental health National Helpline which provides a care and support line for people in mental distress - a caring compassionate voice at the other end to listen, counsel, advice and direct them with the utmost confidentiality and is a means of referral for people who might need professional services.

Of the night, at JoJolapa, Trustee Marva Clarke commented; “The night was an opportunity for people to explain and highlight Reconnect Health Development Initiative, plus talk, openly, about mental health issue in society today and explain what is happening out there, especially with the issue of drug abuse in Nigeria, throughout the UK and the rest of the world.

We are looking for support as we support those with mental health issues, with no outlet for aid.”

The UK Reconnect Health Development Initiative is the offspring of its African counterpart, after its set-up in Nigerian capital, Abuja, in 2013, to fill the void, as there were no operatives, like a mental health Helpline, or sustainable and evidence based drug-preventative programmes.

Udenze commented; “We are looking to forge partnerships with organisations to provide psychosocial intervention for the displaced people in North East Nigeria following the Boko Haram insurgency. ReconnectHDI is also looking at carrying out Rehabilitation programs for uk citizens abroad in specialised centres

BHF Reveals Top Reasons of Gym-Phobia

T

he fear of being judged is one of the biggest causes of ‘gym-phobia’ in the West Midlands, according to new statistics released as part of the British Heart Foundation’s new MyMarathon challenge.

Most of us can come up with a plethora of excuses not to go to the gym or exercise. But a BHF poll has revealed aside from membership costs the main reason people in the West Midlands avoid going to the gym is feeling intimidated by other fitter, more competitive people.

Second on the list was the fear of what other people would think of them when exercising, followed by not knowing or having the confidence to use different exercise machines.

People showing off at the gym was another turn off for people in the West Midlands, as well as regulars always taking over the gym.

Other gym pet peeves included people wearing lycra and grunting whilst exercising.

The BHF is challenging the nation to take on its brand new MyMarathon challenge to conquer 26.2miles over the month of May and help fund life saving research.

Runners can complete the challenge this May in a way that’s a challenge for them. Whether it’s at the park, during lunch-breaks or around the streets with friends by your side.

By supporting the hospital charity’s Star Appeal customers helped to fund the UK’s first holistic centre for children with rare diseases – providing coordinated care, treatment and support to improve the lives of more than 9,000 patients treated at the hospital for over 500 rare conditions.

A Spokesperson for Chop and Wok said: “We have worked with Birmingham Children’s Hospital before and they do amazing things to help improve the lives of sick children and their families.

We hope that by getting a free meal, our customers were encouraged to donate the money they would have spent on their meal to the charity, or just to donate whatever they can and most importantly, spread awareness of children with rare diseases and the difficulties they can face.”

ealth chiefs want to know what Brummies do to stay active. As NHS England unveiled plans to get people at risk of type-2 diabetes more active, Birmingham City Council's Wellbeing Panel is asking people: • how active they are or aren't • what they do to stay active • what local facilities they use And anyone who completes a 10-minute survey could win Love2shop vouchers worth up to £300.

Head of Wellbeing Service, Karen Creavin, said: "A growing

number of people across the city are physically active but too many people still lead inactive lives and we want to understand why. What are the barriers to people being active? What do we need to do to encourage inactive people to use our Wellbeing Centres, parks, open spaces and cycle lanes more?

There are many benefits to being physically active. Studies show it can reduce your risk of major illnesses, such as heart disease, stroke, type 2 diabetes and cancer, while an active lifestyle is also good for your mental health.

So we want to know what works

t was a celebration of achievement as Dr Peter Lewis retired from his current post as Executive Medical Director at BSMHFT after 15 years of outstanding service to the trust and also the community.

After qualifying as a Medical Officer in 1972 from the University of West Indies, and completing his higher training in Psychiatry at the University of Toronto, Ontario, Canada, he returned to the Caribbean to work as a consultant Psychiatrist at St Anne’s Hospital.

In 2001 Peter came to England and was headhunted by the then Northern Birmingham Mental Health Trust, tasked with developing services for Black and Ethnic Minority patients in the Handsworth and Ladywood areas.

In 2005 after the merger of the trust with the South Birmingham Mental Health Trust he was appointed as Clinical Director for services in the Heart of Birmingham PCT area.

He was instrumental in improving service delivery during his tenure, before in 2009 he was appointed as Executive Medical Director and joined the board of Birmingham and Solihull Mental Health Foundation Trust.

As MD his legacy includes the modernisation of services, including electronic prescribing and the introduction of digital dictation, and remodelling of the clinical services.

Birmingham is bucking the national trend when it comes to physical activity, thanks to award-winning initiatives like Be Active, Active Parks and This Girl Can. According to Sport England’s latest Active People Survey, the number of active people in Birmingham continues to rise, despite a national drop. Since the first Active People Survey was published in 2006, the proportion of Brummies participating in sport and active recreation, at moderate intensity, for at least 30 minutes on at least 12 days a month has increased from 17.2 per cent to 20.4 per cent.

Now the city council's Wellbeing Service is determined to build on that progress.

I’m always struck by the diligence of the team that scour records and drive up and down the country to find anyone living who may have the remotest link to the deceased.

Family means many different things to different people. I’m blessed to be a part of two huge family trees that I began to create in the late 80s and early 90s.

I had started to travel to the Caribbean, America and Canada by myself and in talking to older relatives began to piece together how I was linked to these wonderful people.

I met 3 of my Grandparents for the first time in 1977 on my initial outing to the Caribbean and fell in love with them instantly.

Since then my family has grown on both sides and we re-group for weddings, funerals and adhoc reunions.

There is a picture of me at the most recent Jamaican family wedding in the Dominican Republic below.

I recently met a lady who has never met her Jamaican father.

All she has of him is his passport. I can’t even imagine what that feels like as both my parents are alive and together.

As you progress through life you begin to realise that no-one has a textbook family situation. I had the privilege of introducing this lady to someone who could help.

Salaries soaring among building firms, says FMB

S

alaries for small building firms are soaring as a result of the growing skills shortage, according to the Federation of Master Builders (FMB).

Commenting on the results of the FMB’s State of Trade Survey for Q1 2016, Brian Berry, Chief Executive of the FMB, said: “More than half of small construction firms are predicting that wages and salaries will increase over the coming six months.”

“Given that brickies are already able to command wages of up to £60,000 per year in London and around £45,000 a year in the North

of England, it’s clear that the skills squeeze is starting to push up costs for construction SMEs.” The results for the first three months of this year show consistent growth among small construction firms in almost all parts of the UK. What’s more, despite evidence of the EU referendum causing some uncertainty within the business community, more than twothirds of firms expect their workloads to increase over the coming three months.

These results are heartening but skills shortages, and the knock-on effect on wages and salaries, re-

mains a major cause for concern.”

Berry concluded: “We need tens of thousands of new and returning construction workers to pick up the slack, or this growth among construction SMEs could so easily unravel. The Government must work closely with the construction industry to ensure its new system is as easy to use as possible, or else we could see apprenticeship training by small firms nose dive at exactly the wrong time.”

he Caribbean’s economic viability and sustainability must continue to attract the attention of leaders and policymakers in all walks of life as the region continues to grapple with the challenges of the 21st century.

“As companies and nation states, we must consider that what we have done in the past may not be good enough; what got us this far may not get us to the place where we create the loyalty and profitability we desperately need,” said Ian Blanchard, an action business coach and former chief executive at telecommunications company Cable & Wireless.

Mr. Blanchard will be a presenter at the Caribbean Tourism Organization (CTO)’s 8th Tourism Human Resources Conference in Antigua & Barbuda from 11-13 May. Jamaica and Cuba to sign multi-destination agreement

uba and Jamaica will sign an agreement in the first week of May for multi-destination tourism between the two countries.

Jamaica’s minister of tourism Edmund Bartlett announced at the opening of the Jamaica Product Exchange (JAPEX) that he and his Cuban counterpart will sign the agreement on Friday of that week.

public in June, Minister Bartlett said.

Hosted by Lord Sheik and the Association of African Owned Businesses, the ‘Invest in Abia Forum' established that there is indeed a keen appetite to invest in Abia State.

Speakers sought to woo both foreign investors with a calculated eye on the potential favourable returns and the Nigerian Diaspora in the UK looking to establish a presence back home.

Governor Victor Ikpeazu was represented at the event by Dr.

John Ahukannah, the Abia State Commissioner for Health, who used the occasion to emphasize Abia State’s commitment to providing a structured friendly and unrivalled business environment for investment.

Delegates told him it would be useful for Abia State to publish an easy to digest blueprint of investment cycles reflecting the State strategy over the short, medium and long term.

Dr. Ahukannah was also told how it would be useful for the State to confirm top priorities in various investment cycles.

Big things ahead for Handsworth Cricket Club

A

fter the last-day battle between the two best teams in last season’s league, eventual Warwickshire Premier Division winners, Handsworth Cricket Club, made every effort to be fully prepared and raring to go as life back in the Birmingham District & Premier League got fully under way this term.

Winning the championship was the ultimate achievement for the well-run club as they set out this year to emulate their efforts which were richly earned.

It was the culmination of years of determination, courage an d very hard work that came together from a team who gelled together, from the off.

The Caribbean-led multi-cultural outfit - the only one in the league – playing their home games at Handsworth Park and is continuing their search for local, national, or international businesses who would like to sponsor one of their teams.

The club, with teams ranging from, Under-11s and Women’s teams, through to the highly successful First XI, run Junior outdoor training sessions - for children ages 8 -15 years old - on Wednesdays, from 6pm until 8pm, and continues until end of August, as well as offering unisex cricket catering for both young males and females.

A sponsored walk in aid of the Junior Club took place around the circumference of Handsworth Park – a distance estimated at approximately 3 miles (twice around) – in aid of their fundraising with donations still welcomed to make Handsworth C.C. move forward as they continue nurturing the abundance of local talent who yearn the chance to place top quality cricket in a top quality team.

former county teammate of Ryder Cup hopeful Andy Sullivan has chalked up his own notable victory after taking top honours on his route to being a PGA Professional.

Jamie Carney, based at Robin Hood Golf Club near Solihull, has secured the prestigious Lord Derby Trophy and a cheque for £1,000 at the Titleist PGA Assistant of the Year awards after coming top of the Year Two assistant

professionals on the PGA Foundation Degree.

The 24-year-old, who was in the same Warwickshire amateur team as European Tour star Sullivan, was recognised for his achievements at The PGA’s annual graduation ceremony held at the University of Birmingham on Friday April 22, where former Ryder Cup winning captain Bern-

ard Gallacher was the guest of honour.

Carney collected the trophy from the current Lord Derby and cheque from Matthew Johnson, Titleist brand director.

“I’m really chuffed as I have taken this very seriously and put in significant time and effort,” said Carney.

When I finished school I wanted to play and so I was a full tie amateur until I was 21, getting to plus three. I played for the county in

some events with Andy Sullivan, and I also represented England boys.”

Carney was introduced to the game by a friend’s grandad, who took him down the range. He then joined Shirley Golf Club aged 11 and was indebted to his dad for supporting his passion.

“My dad worked shifts for Cadbury so he would pick me up from school and take me to the club to practise for a couple of hours before he would go to work.

He’d stand with me, go and pick up balls and take me to events.

He didn’t play golf, but my dad’s dedication and support is the reason why I got to where I did in the game and the opportunities I now have. I am very lucky to have a dad like that.”

ormer 6-times World Squash Champion Jonah Barrington celebrated his 75th Birthday by being a Guest of Honour at the Edgbaston Priory private Members' Tennis, Squash and Leisure Club in Birmingham as a squash court was open, in his name, at the home of the Aegon Classic.

Jonah, present with son, Joey, marked his very special personal day with special guests, at the leading racquet sports club posing for pictures and reminiscing about his career in the sport he loved from a very early age in his life and the pleasures he got from being the leading exponent in the fast-paced game.

He recalled; “I was squash’s first full-time player when I took a plunge into the unknown in 1969 and became a lonely prophet of a sport with no circuit, no television, no World Championship, and no obvious pathway forward.”

Barrington brought about the birth of professionalism. He did it as much by force of character as by the force of his squash. Although he was also an extraordinary player, it was as a driven pioneer, a passionate talker, and an inspiring visionary that he argu-

ably achieved more.

“I was a ‘lone ranger’ in the game in this country as it never really got the media attention that it does in other countries throughout the world, saw I was determined to bring it to the fore, at any given opportunity, and make it accessible to all.”

eicester City star, Riyad Mahrez’s vote as this year’s PFA Player of the Year wasn’t just a victory for him it was personal recognition for the outstanding achievement by Foxes manager, Claudio Ranieri, the East Midlands surprise outfit this season and, equally, the African continent as the Algerian-born star has been an instrumental part of Leicester’s title run and thoroughly deserves his award.

The 25-year-old was the favourite ahead of the ceremony, in London, as he saw off competition from two team-mates, N’Golo Kante and Jamie Vardy, as well as West Ham’s Dmitri Payet, Arsenal’s Mesut Ozil and Tottenham Hotspur’s Harry Kane and is the first Leicester City player to win the award and the first player from Africa to be handed the trophy.

It was a clean sweep for the Premier League leaders as Vardy came in second place, while Kane finished third.

Meanwhile, Spurs midfielder Dele Alli picked up the Young Player of the Year award.

The talented England international has enjoyed a stunning breakthrough season in the Premier League.

Both players were named in the PFA Team of the Year.

Birmingham’s Bull Ring if needed to get squash publicity it deserved.

Barrington was a star almost wherever he went and was refreshingly forthright, a magnetic story-teller, a great humorist, and an incisive commentator.

For him to have a squash court in his name is the very least the outspoken, innovating, inspirational man of the people deserves.

Great expectations for Team GB Women’s hockey in Rio 2016

W

hen the Team GB women’s hockey team beat New Zealand to secure bronze at London 2012 – their first medal in 20 years –the players managed to keep their emotions in check amid scenes of unbridled jubilation.

The climax to an unforgettable moment of sporting drama, their over-joyed captain, Kate Richardson-Walsh, said; “If anybody deserves a gold medal for bravery we certainly did then.”

Success has eluded the English men’s team since Great Britain’s fourth place finish at London 2012. They have since finished fourth in both the World Cup and European Championship.

The women’s side has fared better: last summer they won their first European hockey title in 24 years, banishing memories of a poor World Cup and sparking hopes of a strong performance in Rio.

Goalkeeper Maddie Hinch saved three penalties in the EuroHockey final shootout against the Netherlands, and enjoyed a superb World League, to establish herself as one of the finest shot-stoppers in the sport.

21-year-old student Lily Owsley began 2015 in a hospital bed with viral meningitis. She ended it with an award crowning her the greatest young player in Europe.

Since London 2012 the sport is still riding that triumphant wave. There are now 180,000 regular players turning out for the 900 clubs across the country, with 25 per cent more women and 55 per cent more under-16s playing since 2011.

The eighteen athletes which was recently announced is a new media-savvy Great Britain women’s hockey team with great expectations heaped on them to return from Rio with a medal – of some sort – in hand.

Birmingham to stage major international marathon

fter the success of the Half Marathon and 10K Fun Run, a new Birmingham marathon has been announced more than 30 years after the city held its last 26.2 mile run.

Another major sporting coup for the city, the Birmingham International Marathon and half marathon will be held in October 2017.

The race, created by the Great Run Company, who is behind the Great Birmingham 10K and the Great Birmingham Run in partnership with the city council, will be the first full marathon since the People's Marathon, which ran between 1980 and 1985.

Steve Hollingworth, Birmingham City Council's assistant director for sport, events and parks said: "It will encourage more residents to become physically active and have

access to a full complement of running events in the city.

And, furthermore, the knockon effects for the local economy will be huge."

Great Run Company CEO, Mark Hollinshead, said the event could become the UK's second largest running event within two to three years.

"Not only will this be a great event for British elite runners, we will also aim to attract runners of all abilities from the UK and beyond, to run for charity, for the challenge or just for fun," he said.

Former Olympic-medal winner, Liz McColgan, suggest the event could involve 40,000 participants.

That would make the Birmingham marathon larger than London, Tokyo and Berlin - putting it within the top 30 largest running events on the planet.

Organisers hope it will be used for the 2018 Commonwealth Games trials in Queensland, Austrlia. The start line will be at the Alexander Stadium, the home of British Athletics and Birchfield Harriers.

The route will pass landmarks including Villa Park, Selfridges, Cannon Hill Park, Cadbury's and Edgbaston Cricket Ground.

Hailed as the birthplace of the open-to-all marathon, the Birmingham International Marathon will be the inaugural run in a newly formed Great Run British Marathon Series, managed by The Great Run Company, which is set to create two more marathons in the UK.
