avid Beckham is to use his status and fame in a worldwide appeal to help all children caught up in atrocities across the globe.

The UNICEF Goodwill Ambassador has voiced his concerns in light of the millions

of children who are homeless and without education worldwide.

Syria for example is the housing of more than 1.2 million children seeking refuge due to continuous conflict whilst 2.3 million children are victims of conflict in the Central African Republic.

Recently, the former football player visited the Philippines, where Beckham saw first-hand how as many as 1.7 million children could be displaced as a result of Typhoon Hayian.

In his film documenting what he has seen and what he hopes to achieve, the global super star

states: “Emergencies like war, a food crisis or a natural disaster like the typhoon here in the Philippines destroy children’s lives. It’s easy to be overwhelmed by the scale of an emergency.

New Left sided Clubs popped whilst a supported Campaign for Nuclear Disarmament took full presidency.

Alongside Stuart himself, EP Thompson, Ralph Miliband along with many others played their parts in what would be a tightly woven fabric of social standing and in turn, a birth of recognised socialism within the UK. Stuart would become the first editor of a new and radical text, the New Left Review, which triggered an active approach to tackling world issues, with one clear and succinct message; Get off your backsides and challenge the existing order!

Something the bands of the mid to late seventies incorporated musically as well as challenge ardently through Punk.

A tribute in itself therefore, that over twenty years on, Hall’s message was taking center stage in new social movements whereby the establishment was once again the target for those seeking to voice social unrest.

Yet perhaps a little more subtly placed to the snarling epitaph of Punk, Hall desired for those to also think first, argue and debate after, as to best way forward.

This would remain every part of his legacy as any other teaching.

tuart Hall's message was simple, yet for many looking for inner peace and enlightenment, impossible to follow.

‘Go and get off your backside, seek to understand before challenging and don’t become lost in the changing world around you.’

Jamaican born, Hall was soon to emerge as one of the great radical thinkers as he moved to the British Isles on a journey of discovery and teaching.

Of such teachings he would be remembered by was his dedication to challenging parliament, within the United Kingdom.

“Thatcherism had to be understood before it could be contested” Such was the man’s ability to engage in politics he inspired a generation to understand their nemesis before speaking out, recognising that such conditions as ‘Thatcherism’ would only last if the phenomenon that was allowed to flourish around the phrase, continued in ignorance, not action.

Hall would want to be remem-

bered for his political agitation as much as his teachings, although his teachings further embodied the beliefs he stood by.

‘It is the way our sympathy flows and recoils that really determines our lives,’ Hall wrote in reference and review of D H Lawrence’s Lady Chatterley’s lover, yet so much of it can be assumed in how Hall taught and lived to the point where his very own political aversions lay to rest in the statement.

His journey into the myriad of political debate started in the early to mid-fifties. The world was a changing place and Hall’s youth was very much a part of that.

Crisis erupted between the East and West whilst invasions spanned the European continent.

Anglo-French-Israeli touring engulfed Egyptian territories whilst the Soviet Union, a most prevalent danger to western attitudes saw the red eye cast towards Hungary.

Those days ensured dissidence evolved, with Westerners keen to engage in left wing debate and an open minded attitude to creating revolution before peace.

ventures was to establish a link between theory and popular culture, through Birmingham University’s cultural studies programme, still an active part of the Universities curriculum today.

If it weren’t for Hall’s entry into creating the cultural platform, so many young black Anglo-African writers and film makers would not have been inspired as they have been. Isaac Julien and John Akomfrah are the most prominent examples.

Aside from Hall’s dedication to inspiring young minds, he was also brilliant at predicting what was to come.

As if he possessed a magic ball, he confronted the political debate sometime before Thatcher’s landslide reelection, June 9th 1983, stating that Thatcherism was to become a new authoritarian populism.

Thatcher’s populism proved to be short-lived, whilst Hall’s warnings a reminder of his intelligence and ability to draw on public attitudes further demonstrating his place within a moving society.

An active speaker right up until his death earlier last month, Hall remained critical of the war on Iraq as well as the direction of policy which engulfs Europe, the National Health Service and immigration.

Indeed, at a time of social unrest once more, where a nation has been gripped by the story of four or five characters in Channel 4’s Benefit Street and debated through social media traffic, the voice of Stuart Hall will be greatly missed.

Of the amazing reel of fact files one could deliver on Hall, the fact he never wrote a published book is one of the more profound.

Yet, on assessment to the man who has delivered timeless footage and messages with Yo u Tu b e alone a testimony to his worth, perhaps it is better the man who warned us to fight and acknowledge, not reciprocate through bitterness or ignorance be better known in short snippets, which can be quoted at any time, any day.

Sikh aid at the fore in Somerset flood relief A group of Sikhs from the West Midlands won the hearts of Great Britain by volunteering to deliver essential supplies and help relief efforts in Somerset and south-west England, which was hit by floods of 'biblical' proportions as Britain grappled with severe weather conditions since early January.

Moved by scenes of devastation and vast fields turning into lakes, and trains stopping amid a sea of water, Sikh volunteers from Guru Nanak Gurdwara Sahib in Walsall and Khalsa Aid, based in Slough, in Berkshire, joined the multi-agency relief efforts as the severe weather ripped through rail and road communications, as well as cutting power to thousands of homes.

The aid mission did more than just save the day when they lent a helping hand to families affected by the floods.

The hardy volunteers rescued personal belongings and even a family's pet goldfish from the

torrid floodwater that forced dozens to evacuate their homes.

Randhir Singh Heer, founder of the good cause, said: "On a scale of one to 10, I would say the effect it had down there was a 10," It was really bad. You would walk into someone's living room and look out into their garden and it would be like a lake. It was terrible."

He added: "We were originally going to take food to the people, such as sandwiches, curries and rice but we were told that it was not food that they needed – they needed items that would stop the water from getting into homes."

Within hours, a team of six volunteers had filled up a van with 600 sandbags, hand sanitisers and membrane waterproof sheeting, before hitting the road at

3.30am the next morning.

Their aid work began when they arrived in Somerset just hours later, and soon they came across people who had been badly affected by the wild weather.

One of the most graphic images of the flood damage is the dangling railway track in Dawlish, on the picturesque link between Devon and Cornwall along the coast. It was built in the mid-19th century by the iconic engineer, Isambard Kingdom Brunel, who was also a consultant to the Eastern Bengal Railway Company.

Picking Up Good Vibrations – Funding Secured for AfroVibes 2014

West Midlands Youth Commissioners appointed

F

ourteen Youth Commissioners, who will work directly with the Police and Crime Commissioner (PCC), police officers and key decision makers, have been elected to serve in the West Midlands.

In each local authority area, two Youth Commissioners have been selected through a democratic processes, chosen by their peers. They will be carrying out their duties on a voluntary basis.

The decision to appoint Youth Commissioners was the outcome of a Youth Summit event held in January 2013.

The young people at the event suggested options for ways they wanted to be consulted. In addition to the appointment of Youth Commissioners, these included engagement through social media and the creation of a Youth Commission.

PCC Bob Jones said that he is delighted that the new Youth Commissioners are so keen to start in their new roles: "They will have a significant role in helping to build relationships and break down barriers that exist between the police, young people and the community." Stephen Rimmer, who is the West Midlands' strategic lead on preventing violence against vulnerable people, met with the Youth

A festival of contemporary South African visual and performing arts, Afrovibes Festival will tour venues in Newcastle, Liverpool, Manchester, Nottingham, Lancaster, Herefordshire, Berkshire and east London throughout October and November as part of the Strategic Touring programme, and will visit Birmingham in association with The Drum.

It aims to introduce new audiences to captivating and thought-provoking music, dance, photography, film and theatre celebrating the 20th anniversary of South Africa’s democracy, created in artistic collaborations between South African and British artists and programmed by James Ngcobo, Artistic Director of Johannesburg’s Market Theatre As well as attending performances and exhibitions, audiences will be able to take part in workshops run by artists and dance companies from both the UK and South Africa. These will include Newcastle’s Live Theatre, Birmingham’s mac and Ace Dance, and Durban-based photographer Tyler Dolan.

You are allowed to invest up to £100k each tax year into a young business. The SEIS tax scheme lowers your risk of investing in a new company.

If you invest in an SEIS you must be prepared to lose your money, because the likelihood of a young company failing is quite high, generally speaking.

You should also not invest what you cannot afford to lose!

Having said that, an investment into SEIS does significantly lower risk.

In return the government gives up front income tax relief of 50% of the investment you make. That takes 50% of the risk away.

If the company succeeds and you make a profit on the sale of those shares in, say 3 years time, you are exempt from capital gains tax on that profit.

If the company fails you may be able to offset your loss against your income tax. So here, the government is taking

the ‘sting’ out of an investment that goes wrong, and improving the return on an investment that goes right.

Here is an example: Suppose you invested £10k in a startup company. You get £5k back on your income taxes, reducing your exposure by half.

If later on the company goes bust you can offset the other half against income tax at whatever rate you pay.

Example: If you have taxable income of £50k you could expect to have an income tax liability of £9.8k.

Investing £10k in SEIS attracts £5k tax relief, reducing your income tax liability to £4.8k. There are restrictions on the types of firms that are SEIS eligible.

The NCA in partnership with strategic partners UK Asian Women’s Centre and the Sikh Community Youth Services have launched the Birmingham Community Advice (BCA) Project which offers information, advice and guidance services via existing service providers across Birmingham.

BCA is a city-wide service and will offer a free, impartial and confidential service for people from BME communities to gain advice and advocacy support in the key areas of, Employment and Discrimination Law, Welfare Benefits, Specialist Housing and Debt.

The project team is keen to ensure that service provision is extended to offer a value added service to the local communities and organisations.

By offering volunteers the opportunity to gain priceless training and experience working with experienced case workers to support them and organisations to build resilience in these unsettled times.

With the harsh and relentless cut backs and scarcity of

We have the second highest unemployment rate in the nation in the West Midlands. Despite this, our Quarterly Economic Survey consistently shows that services and manufacturing firms struggle to find suitable applicants for skilled roles. Skills remain a major issue.”

Birmingham especially is a city with a wealth of initiatives which

have been established to provide employers with the skills necessary for business to grow.

Of these include financial incentives driven by Birmingham City Council’s Young Talent for Business programme as well as the Greater Birmingham Chambers own recruitment launch.

Pile continued: “We would urge businesses which are considering expanding their workforce to take up these opportunities and access the available support.”

NCA launch new advice and advocacy project funding opportunities it is paramount that all means to collaborate and build partnerships/ networks are explored.

The launch event, hosted by Sewa Singh Mandla, a Trustee and Non Exec Director of NCA, heard from Councillor Mahmood Hussain, Amrick Singh the Nishkam Centre Director and Mrs Sudarshan Abrol, Hon CEO of the UK Asian Women’s Centre.

Cllr Hussain said; “Nishkam promotes equality and practices a labour of love in extending their hand to all who have needed it, helping to eradicate

inequalities.”

BCA Project Coordinator, Gulbag Singh, said “I am encouraged by the level of commitment to work together and it was great to see several councillors from across the wards come to support the launch event”.

The BCA team are now busy securing outreach locations establishing working partnerships within existing community organisations so that services can be provided and a sustainable working model created.

Birmingham to go green with celebration J ust how patriotic towards the emerald isle does one have to be to celebrate St Patrick’s

Day? It is far less likely that you will see people worldwide carrying leeks in hand and shouting ‘yaki dah’ on St David’s day, therefore why do we celebrate so openly the day of the Irish?

One city that may just hold the key to this longstanding question is Birmingham. A city created of diverse culture, all sewn together through Victorian industry, Birmingham’s inhabitants would brush shoulders with men and women from all

walks of life, from all corners of the earth. For many years now Birmingham’s own little corner of Ireland in Digbeth, has housed numerous events in the lead up to ‘the big day’ which has seen visitors hit the cobbles and pavement of the region in droves. St Patrick’s has evolved, attracting visiting numbers to rival the very best in arts movement and celebration. Established as a non-profit organisation in 1996, the festival has embraced Irish heritage within the city and has provided a platform for all those who wish to turn green with celebration.

So what can we expect this

2014? Well the event managers have been hard at work, looking to brighten the region and outdo previous efforts to celebrate with the shamrock. The celebrations kick off the first week of March, delving right into the heart of the month with the parade being acknowledged as the pinnacle of the movement.

Rachel Giaramita, creative director of the spectacular events had this to state about the history and expectation for this year’s festivities: “Everyone loves a parade – but especially the Irish. Birming-

ham’s St Patrick's Parade goes back to 1952 and was the first in Britain. It was originally started by the community to reinforce their identity and ensure their strong links with the home country. The parade as we know it has taken place in Digbeth since 1996 and has since grown enormously in stature.

2014 promises to be better than

ever. Whilst being unmistakably Irish at the core, the Parade increasingly mirrors the fantastic diversity of our ethnicities as we welcome guest appearances from other communities.”

With continued growth and community support, the parade as well as the events that follow goes some way to answering why the day is celebrated, recent

tweets have even called for the day to become an official Bank Holiday. The British take on the celebration may not match the grandeur of Irish cities such as Dublin or Cork or even the New York annual parade but the spirit of the Irish will nonetheless be in full bloom, this coming spring in Birmingham.

A Word with Bishop Joe Aldred

A

s seen in many great Western’s when the man of action walks into the scene you know who he is and why he’s there. Hoards of bystanders approach the tavern gates and watch in anticipation for the first pistol to be fired.

Our subject of interview, Bishop Joe Aldred may be no typical action man, or even for that matter a Hollywood titan. Despite Bishop Aldred’s more humble approach to his own community, albeit without a pistol and a horse for transportation, his presence is undeniable as was the level of respect received upon entry.

Humble

‘Good to see you Sir’ shouted over one member of staff at our destination, the Drum, Newtown, Birmingham, whilst others upon realising it were indeed Bishop Aldred walked over to send their best wishes for the New Year ahead.

That’s quite a number of people wishing you well, I commented, as if to provoke an exclusive on how the Doctor and Bishop by trade, Father and Husband by nature connected his lifestyle upon the communities.

Reasons

“I have known the people here for some time; it is only natural for us to wish one and all a good day, right?” The humble beginning of the interview set the scene for further reverence to the Doctor’s work, whilst his warm and embracing character suggested there was more to find out than perhaps first anticipated.

Your book “Thinking Outside The Box” I am interested how this came about?

Taking a moment to gather his thoughts, Bishop Aldred laid his head back, mindful of the question posed.

“There are a number of reasons, and like any work that comes to pass for most authors, it comes over a period of time.

This particular piece, thinking outside the box is no different and actually it started as sermons I had constructed over the years, posing the questions we should ask and consider within the wider communities we deal with, the communities we envisage and live within day to day.”

That certainly seemed the case having done my own research into the book, with views and accreditations stretching throughout history and down a myriad of social thought.

One thing that was most striking however, that carried through the chapters as if a wave of intent and deliberation was the idea of understanding of equality and in turn moving forward.

Was this deliberate then Bishop?

“Of course and I feel this is where we as a society are going wrong. Everybody wants to box us in, make you dependant on some aspect or nature of your life, as if our lives did indeed dependant on it.

We must only be reliant on appreciating and understanding ourselves, yet at a time of fear and ignorance of our neighbour, it has been conditioned in our minds for us to find this difficult.”

What lessons can be learned then, or indeed how can we move forward?

“Moving forward is the lifeblood of the church and new generations are needed to keep the spirit alive. This is also true for our communities.

I use Birmingham for example, early on in the chapters dedicated to understanding race and this notion of why racism exists.

Maybe it exists because we let it exist?

Or maybe, just maybe it is because we do not understand the man who uses it, the man who is afraid to leave his door or is angry at what he sees on the street.

Whether we like it or not, we are in a multicultural society, therefore any decision made now on must be accepting of that, not conditioned to disclose information to one sector or another part of the community.”

Is this why it is called Thinking Outside The Box? “Yes, but also no, as if we did think outside the box then perhaps we wouldn’t be in the trouble we are in today, regarding our views, or our apparent lack of understanding.”

‘Multiculturalism is dead – long live multiculturalism, is a chapter dedicated to exactly how society is viewed. In this chapter Bishop Aldred confronts ignorance at the very core and requests we open our minds to the

beauty of understanding.

In his concluding verse he has written: ‘What is needed is a greater appreciation of our culture and that of others.’ Yet, moving forward perhaps we, the media have as much to blame as the misconstrued attitudes of the man or woman on the street, perhaps it some publications which have failed to communally accept our multiculturalism here in the UK.

Community

Here was a man of great respect within his community, this was clear to see. He works as a broadcaster for the BBC and has written and delivered hundreds of Pentecostal sermons which deliver the good news of the Lord.

Undeniably cosmopolitan in his approach and wide eyed when it comes to those who may criticise his relentless belief in a big society, a real big society made up of people all shapes creed and size.

Besides the writing then Bishop, what keeps you going and wanting to work positively within our communities?

“I have been writing a long while, and if I ask myself why I have carried on then this is for two reasons.

The first because of the sparseness or lack of literary material particularly of the theological nature from a black perspective, so when I preach or write it was very difficult to find material from the black church or community, so that’s really how I came to start my writings and to look at everything from a theoretical view but to also add something for the black community, who are very much part of the fabric we have in society today.

Secondly, as I have already stated I am a husband and a Father and as I have no working office in the area, (I work at home), well understandably I think I would drive the family crazy if I was always around.”

The joke shared brought another smile from the theorist and writer, whose insight into society and the barriers we face may very well help to alleviate the stress placed on some, by the ‘big society’ of Britain we find ourselves in today.

I was born in October 3, 1966 in Ghana. I now work as a logistics manager at William Pitt construction in Accra Ghana.

The Soul T he soul is generally perceived to be the animating and vital principle in humans, credited with the faculties of thought, action, and emotion and often conceived as an immaterial entity or the spiritual part of a person that is believed to give life to the body and in many religions is believed to live forever.

It could further be explained as the immaterial aspect or essence of a person, conjoined with the body during life and separable at death.

The concept of a soul is found in nearly all cultures and religions, though the interpretations of its nature vary considerably.

Concept

Many cultures have recognized some incorporeal principle of human life or existence corresponding to the soul, and many have attributed souls to all living things so that the reality of the soul or the substantiality of the soul as something internal to the body, but to a large extent independent of it, and leading a life of its own leaves little for intellectual or religious dispute.

Despite widespread and longstanding belief in the existence of a soul, however, different religions and philosophers have developed a variety of theories as to its nature, its relationship to the body, and its origin and mortality.

Ancient Greek concepts of the soul varied considerably according to the particular era and philosophical school.

The Epicureans considered the soul to be made up of atoms like the rest of the body. For the Platonists, the soul was an immaterial and incorporeal substance, akin to the gods yet part of the world of change and becoming.

Aristotle’s conception of the soul was obscure, though he did state that it was a form inseparable from the body.

Pythagoras held that the soul was of divine origin and existed before and after death.

Plato and Socrates also accepted the immortality of the soul, while Aristotle considered only part of the soul, or intellect, to have that quality. Epicurus

The incorporeal essence which animates the body, in scientific terms may be likened to the anti material particles.

Thus, modern science which may seem to be exempted from such highly philosophical concept of the soul is bent on providing hard evidence through the application of the scientific method.

In Christian theology St. Augustine spoke of the soul as a “rider” on the body, making clear the split between the material and the immaterial, with the soul representing the “true” person. However, although body and soul were separate, it was not possible to conceive of a soul without its body.

The cycle of death and rebirth (samsara) is eternal according to some Hindus, but others say it persists only until the soul has attained karmic perfection, thus merging with the Absolute (brahman).

The Muslim concept, like the Christian, holds that the soul comes into existence at the same time as the body; thereafter, it has a life of its own, its union with the body being a temporary condition.

Existence

The world over, both major and minor philosophical, religious, scientific concepts all concur with irrefutable evidences the existence of the soul, its nature and purpose.

The existence of the soul therefore proves mans affinity with the divine. If the animating principle, or immaterial essence of man is eternal, indestructible, invincible.

Then it means that, man is part and parcel of the divine whole, but has been conditioned in the material body. Even that, the soul has all the trappings of rising from its conditioned state to that of higher spirituality.

In our quest for spirituality, righteousness, liberation from the material bondage, shedding the frivolous and unrewarding needs of the senses and realizing the potential of the soul, we can ascend to a higher spiritual platform and achieve eternal happiness.

Super Church Spotlight - T.D. Jakes

W

here some Parishes bemoan dwindling attendances and a lack of ‘fresh blood’, there is one Parish which is flourishing. One of the so called "Super Churches" of the United States can’t find a car park big enough to seat the growing capacities.

T.D Jakes, the man in the spotlight is the inaugural Pastor of The Potter’s House, in Dallas, Texas, America. So who are they? According to their website: ‘The Potter's House is a nondenominational church, located in the southern sector of Dallas, Texas, founded in 1996. Since 1996, The Potter's House has grown from 50 families to more than 30,000 members who step out in force…’

It has been suggested the church has grown to such a ‘super’ size due to the hard work and ethical prowess of their supreme leadership from Mr Jakes himself and his wife Mrs Serita A Jakes after their push for Christian involvement in the southern states since the mid-nineties.

In perspective, the capacity the Church holds could fill the majority of most major league Soccer Stadiums in the U.S, certainly well over two thirds of football grounds in the United Kingdom.

Officials at the Potter’s House went on to state: “Men comprise 45% of the total congregation, which is unusually high for a mostly minority church. The church brings together the down-andout, the homeless and released offender to sit beside the upand-coming, the celebrity and

the community leader.”

In June last year, ABC the international television reporting body broke the success of the ‘Super Church’ and dedication of the current Church leader, Jakes. The angle of the story suggested ‘Bigger is better’ as Jake was breaking records left right and centre with his vision for the growth of the Christian driven ethos. Oliver Libaw, reported in his opening line: “While Americans have been shying away from religion, and church attendance has been slipping, at least one brand of worship has been bucking the religious trend, getting bigger in every way.

Mega-churches, giant houses of worship that draw congregations of up to 20,000 to weekend services, are thriving, and super-sized houses of worship have become fixtures of America's religious landscape, in spite of criticism from some traditionalists that they are a sort of "religion lite."

or over a century Education Sunday has been part of an ecumenical initiative in which the Catholic Church participates.

It is a day of celebration for all those involved in the world of education and is traditionally held on the ninth Sunday before Easter. This year it took place on the February 16.

The aims are to: Recognise the history of Catholic education; Give thanks to teachers and school staff; Acknowledge the contribution of Catholic schools to the community and Celebrate the academic achievements of Catholic schools.

In support of Education Sunday 2014, the CES produced a collection of downloadable resources with suggested prayer and worship ideas for schools and parishes to use as they wished in their own celebrations of Education Sunday.

With the theme being- Obedience, faith and conscience, and 2014 marking a centenary since the start of the First World War, there was much celebrations of heroism in the face of danger and national soul-searching about the justification for war.

Some young people were given the opportunity to visit First World War battlefields and cemeteries, with other learning about some of the people, perhaps even their ancestors, who played a part in the war.

Airline pledges commitment to connect City with continent

irmingham’s leading regional airline, FLYBE has proposed a wave of new connections that will link the west midlands with the rest of the Europe.

Birmingham International Airport will play host to the expansion that is expected to seat over a million passengers this coming summer.

A fleet of 13 aircraft containing seven brand new 175 jets could propel the airline as well as the airport into colossal status. Both business and leisure flights are to be incorporated, meaning more than two flights a day will run to landmarks including Italy’s fashion capital, Milan.

Paul Simmons Commercial Director for FLYBE spoke ahead of the launch at Birmingham’s Champagne Bar, at an exclusively arranged press conference: “What you can see is that

London’s Westfield shopping district top £2bn in sales

ondon’s leading Westfield shopping emporiums in Shepherd’s Bush and Stratford combined sales equating to more than £2bn for last year.

The entire population of the United Kingdom is believed to have visited the sites, a whopping 66 million people. The Australian built retail giants announced between the two spaces annual records of £1bn were struck despite the fact the Stratford site was growing twice the rate as the older Shepard’s Bush centre, now in a fifth year. new exchange programme between Britain and the Netherlands created a new spirit of activism among young people.

The New Urban Collective Youth Exchange, a programme exploring African history and art as well as those facing discrimination, encouraged discussions on solutions and ways of communicating their ideas to decision and policy-makers.

The brainchild of 24-year-old digital marketing and e-commerce executive, Kojo Bonsu and Mitchell Esajas, Chair and founder of the Holland-based youth, social enterprise; New Urban Collective, the exchange was funded by the European

Commission's Youth In Action project, as well as being supported and managed by Director of the African Caribbean Development Foundation, Bilal Ameen.

With his passion for community work, Bonsu said: “Young people need to rise up and take advantage of the opportunities to change their community. This meeting of minds and cultures should result in long-term tangible changes."

Following his recent exchange to South Africa, Esajas said: “Going on exchange changed my whole perspective on what I can accomplish and what opportunities are out there in this global village. This programme extends the horizons of all its

participants."

Ameen said: “In the Netherlands racism and inequality is just emerging as a major issue, as ethnic minorities begin to demand equality. However, young people are still facing many challenges with discrimination in different ways.”

It's important that the spirit of activism is re-invigorated.”

One of the programme’s facilitators, Brenda King, Chief Executive of African and Caribbean Diversity, which runs a mentoring and enrichment scheme for Black students said: “This programme shows young people that this is a global problem and they are not alone.”

with the outcome. Admission to a grammar school is by selection based wholly on academic ability, measured by a test.

Some grammar schools offer places to those who score highest. Others set a pass mark, leaving places unfilled if sufficient numbers do not attain it and additional criteria for cases when more pupils pass than there are places available.

As places are allocated in accordance with the results of the tests, the scope for successfully appealing against the decision to refuse to admit a pupil is very narrow.

Where places are allocated by reference to a standardised test, elements of discretion to admit pupils are – quite reasonably limited to exceptional cases.

Some admission authorities for grammar schools operate a ‘local review’ process to decide whether children who have, for example, failed the entrance test ought still to be considered as being of grammar school standard and therefore offered a place.

If that internal review is not successful, parents are left with a limited right of appeal to an Appeal Panel.

In order to succeed at an appeal hearing in relation to a grammar school, parents will need to demonstrate to the Appeal Panel that:-

• The child has the academic ability to do well at the grammar school • The child had special extenuating or mitigating circumstances which meant that they were unable to perform to their ability on the day(s) of the exams The panel is therefore trying to predict whether or not the child’s overall academic evidence is sufficiently compelling to indicate the child would have achieved a pass mark under normal circumstances and whether there were mitigating circumstances that explain why the pass or threshold

mark was not reached.

Naturally, the further away from the pass or threshold mark, the stronger this evidence needs to be. For example, if the child did not do well because s/he had the flu, a doctor’s note would be helpful as well as the evidence set out below.

An appeal panel may be asked to consider an appeal where the appellant believes that the child did not perform at their best on the day of the entrance test. In such cases and where a local review process has not been applied, the panel must only uphold the appeal if it is satisfied: 1) that there is evidence to demonstrate that the child is of the required academic standards, for example, school reports giving Year 5/Year 6 SAT results or a letter of support from their current or previous school clearly indicating why the child is considered to be of grammar school ability; and 2) where applicable, that the appellant’s arguments outweigh the admission authority’s case that admission of additional children would cause prejudice to the school.

Where a local review process has been followed, the appeal panel must only consider whether each child’s review was carried out in a fair, consistent

and objective way. If there is no evidence that this has been done, the panel must then follow the process above.

In either case, the panel must not devise its own methods to assess suitability for a grammar school place, unrelated to the evidence provided for the hearing.

The scope for successfully challenging a refusal to admit a pupil to a grammar school is therefore particularly limited because it requires an assessment as to ‘what would the child have achieved if there had been no mitigating circumstances?’

This is an extremely subjective and difficult test to overcome.

Having shown that a child is likely to have achieved the necessary standard, the panel could still refuse an appeal if the admission authority proves that the admission of an additional pupil, would cause prejudice to the school.

Given the risks of failure, it is certainly sensible if parents choose at least one non-grammar school where their child’s prospects of getting in are good, so at least they have a reasonable fall-back position if the child, for whatever reason, is unsuccessful in the grammar school test(s).

Action Winson Green launched pharmacy awarded on HPV for community spirit for boys

A

brand new health group has been formed to safeguard the oral health of young males nationwide.

HPV Action (HPVA) has called health Secretary Jeremy Hunt to account over the growing concerns of oral health, with the HPV virus expected to overtake tobacco use as the main canal route into mouth cancer within the next five years.

Papillomavirus is a vaccination designed to protect young males against a number of oral health attacks. The vaccination has been established to combat an estimated one in five cases of mouth cancer which is diagnosed as HPV. Chief Executive of the British Dental Health Foundation, Dr Nigel Carter OBE, has openly urged the Government to rethink their current position.

Dr Carter said: “The British Dental Health Foundation has for many years been a passionate advocate of male vaccination against HPV. Mouth cancer cases have increased by 50 per cent since the millennium and much if this increase can be attributed to HPV. Twice as many males as females suffer from mouth cancer a condition which has both poor survival rates and huge impact on quality of life for sufferers. Fairness and equity would indicate a strong case for make vaccination and help to reduce the impact if male cancers caused by HPV.”

ommunity feel was the catalyst for a Local Pharmacy award win. Lloyds Pharmacy based at the Summerfield Health Centre saw off over a thousand competitors to the title, with Cameroon-born pharmacist Clement Chapajong, accepting the award.

Judges acknowledged the management and structure of the team were so dedicated to the local community that their efforts have been instrumental in improving the health and wellbeing of the Winson Green residents. One of the deciding factors was the endeavour of the multi-lingual staff working to build trust and recommendation throughout the community.

Of the staff employed, there are 11 different languages spoken and Clement even receives Polish visitors travelling in from surrounding areas as they know he speaks the language. Upon receiving his award, Clement Chapajong stated:

“We work very hard here to ensure that our patients are well looked after. We are motivated and passionate and we make a difference to our patients’ lives.

Our community has a real mix of needs; many are immigrants so we like to think we understand their language and their health issues… We are proud, surprised and overwhelmed all at the same time to win this award. It shows we are doing something right and that means a lot to us,” UK managing director for the large pharmacy chain, Cormac Tobin, reinstated his delight in a branch so dedicated to working with the community and building relations within it, he said: “Trust between a patient and a healthcare professional is vital and Clement and his team have certainly gained this. They epitomise everything that we stand for and it’s great to see them going beyond the call of duty for the residents of Winson Green. The community is in safe hands.”

rinking fruit juice is potentially just as bad for you as drinking sugar-sweetened drinks two medical researchers have warned.

Writing in The Lancet Diabetes and Endocrinology journal, Professor Naveed Sattar and Dr Jason Gill - both of the University of Glasgow’s Institute of Cardiovascular and Medical Sciences - call for better labelling of fruit juice containers to make explicit to consumers that they should drink no more than 150ml a day. They also recommend a change to the UK Government’s current “five-a-day” guidelines, saying these five fruit and vegetable servings should

no longer include a portion of fruit juice.

Professor Sattar, who is Professor of Metabolic Medicine, said: “Fruit juice has a similar energy density and sugar content to other sugary drinks.

Additionally, by contrast with the evidence for solid fruit intake, for which high consumption is generally associated with reduced or neutral risk of diabetes, current evidence suggests high fruit juice intake is associated with increased risk of diabetes.” One glass of fruit juice contains substantially more sugar than one piece of fruit; in addition, much of the goodness in fruit - fibre, for example - is not found in fruit juice, or is there in far smaller amounts, explains

The writer claims, the help is more likely to keep us in a state of depression for even longer... The Draft: The Ill Society, by Olga Levancuka, explores the modern day acceptance of illness verses excuses.

Just because you have the symptoms it doesn't mean you have the illness. With an apathetical plethora of medical information at our fingertips in this modern day digital era, people can easily find a mental illness or affliction that excuses their social behaviours and attitudes, in a society that accepts being ill as a norm. The 'Ill Society' sets out to break the shackles of acceptance and offers freedom to those who are willing to grab it and set free their minds.

“Helping individuals cut not only their excessive fat intake, but also refined sugar intake, could have major health benefits including lessening obesity and heart attacks.” he continued. The debate around fruit juice comes as medical experts are focusing more closely on the link between high sugar consumption and heart disease risks.

Welcome to ‘Camara features’ a new column where I will be spotlighting some of the most amazing charities, organisations and people I have had the privilege of working with. Be a part of my journey and learn and enjoy about being inspired.

he first time I heard about The Spirit of London was when I was contacted by them informing me of my nomination for an award ‘Achievement through Music” in 2010.

As a 13 year old it was a complete shock to me as I couldn’t quite comprehend why.

I remember the youths being murdered in and around the area of London where I live and although it didn’t seem real, it home hard when a family friend was murdered on the same spot I was due to perform on literally the next day!

The pain I saw that it had inflicted on us the friends and family especially his mum and dad plucked at my soul and I wrote a song asking people to stand up against all the evil happening called ‘Stand up My People’.

Before long it was being played by so many people and I was asked to perform it at various events and eventually joined various charities involved with youth and anti gun and knife campaigns.

When I received the award I was so impressed with what SOLA represented and how they were making a positive impact on young people even at that early stage I was more that

happy to become an ambassador for SOLA and take part in the school workshops which are presented in a “chat show” style with celebrities and young positive role models that have come through the SOLA programme telling their stories about how they made the RIGHT choices in life and progressed academically.

It’s a great feeling to hear a teacher say “It was wonderful to see a number of our worst

behaved young learners listening intently to every word being said”.

It’s words like that, that inspire me to inspire others and be touched by their eagerness to want to achieve.

One of my role model’s is Gary Trowsdale, managing director of the Damilola Taylor Trust and SOLA, his energy and faith is relentless, so who better to learn from about the foundation.

In an interview I asked him about how and when SOLA was set up.

Gary starts, by talking about 2008 after there had been a horrific 29 murders of young people on London streets.

There was so much negativity in the media we wanted to address the imbalance in the way our young people coming out of urban areas are portrayed.

Yes, we had problems to contend with but why should the negative actions of a small percentage of the youth population spoil it for so many.

Our young people were being

We had showstoppers like X Factor winner Alexandra Burke and BGT winner Diversity on the support line up while the show itself was hosted by Lemar and the lovely Brooke Kinsella. Brooke had of course been a victim of the scourge of youth violence herself when her brother Ben was killed in 2008 so she resonated strongly with what we were all about. Putting the spotlight of positivity on what we call the "True Face" of London youth.

SOLA will continue through 2014 with the running of school road shows and hopes to develop other outreach programs all over the UK. It needs to be easier to find financial support than it is but no matter the challenge we face we will find a way. The Spirit of London will always prevail!

The planning began to stage a celebration on a big scale - We set out to emulate the BRITS, BAFTAS and MOBOS - The "Community Youth Oscars for young people" The Damilola Taylor Trust was a tiny charity so it was a huge ask.

It was a challenge that we could not resist though and on November 27th 2009 we staged the first Spirit of London Awards

tight funding wise, we took SOLA to the IndigO2 venue.

Once again we pulled together a host of top talent on the support cast including Roll Deep, Flawless, Top loader and the new chart break through act Labrynth.

It was the young people of London who were the main stars of the show though.

In 2011 we moved on to the Royal Albert Hall and absolutely blew the roof off the old venue with the positivity that we brought into the building.

DJ Fresh, Beverley Knight and Tinchy Stryder were among the guest performers and The PM David Cameron and Mayor Boris Johnston provided speeches.

SOLA is important as it totally blows away the myth that the media portray about young people being negative and lazy.

Nothing could be further from the truth. It has been a very hard project to make happen due to lack of funding and every penny has had to be fought for from the private sector.

The big brands are good at targeting young people to take money from them but not quite as good at putting money back!

Our school road show now takes our young ambassadors that have come through the

Featuring circumaural double-enclosure earcups with leather-lined cushions, the 9H is surprisingly light on the weight front, and very comfortable to wear for extended periods.

If you’re not used to overear headphones, the first

thing you will notice is the “extreme passive noise blocking” that the 9H provides. It easily cancels out background noise, giving you full focus on whatever you’re listening to.

The 9H’s come with a number of cables to enable connectivity across a range of devices such as PC, Mac, Tablets and Phones. A single 3.5mm ended cable allows for connections to phones and tablets, and using the enclosed USB sound card, the micro-USB or 3.5mm microphone/headphone jack combo work flawlessly.

You can download SteelSeries Engine 3 from the SteelSeries website, allowing you to get the most out of your new headset.

From here you can tweak your equaliser, microphone noise cancellation and gain as well as turning on Dolby 7.1 emulation.

The microphone sits snugly inside the left earcup when you don’t need it, and with a press and pull, will be ready for use when you do. When communicating, either ingame or on the phone you want a crystal clear audio stream, and that is exactly what you get with the 9H. There were no problems with using Skype, Mumble, Teamspeak, Ventrilo or phone calls even with the microphone retracted, it was still clear, just quieter.

While using the headset for its intended use, gaming, the 9H really shines. With

individual game/application settings, you can adjust your style depending on what game you’re playing.

You’ll notice footsteps of incoming players on games like Battlefield or Call of Duty, and atmospheric sounds in games such as the Tomb Raider reboot are rich and immersive.

Music and films are beautiful to listen to, and you can really get into what you are watching or listening to with no distractions from the outside. A long commute or journey on public transport will never be the same again, as you can block out

screaming children and the general hubbub with this headset.

The build quality of the 9H headset is high, it is a very sturdy headset but has thankfully shed some of the weight that would normally come with a product that seems so resilient.

here are a lot of bluetooth mini speakers making their way onto the market at the moment. We got our hands on the QDOS Q-BOPZ, one of the smaller speakers we’ve come across, and at a mere £30 at that. Does the small size and price tag of the Q-BOPZ belie a beast of greater capabilities?

The first thing you notice about the QBOPZ is the large suction cup on the bottom. A rubberised finish available in a multitude of colours to suit your decor gives the Q-BOPZ a rugged, waterproof finish that feels nice in your hand.

The suction cup allows the speaker to stick to most things with a flat surface, including but not limited to the back of your phone, tablet, table, window or table.

You’ll find a trio of buttons on the Q-BOPZ, volume controls and bluetooth pairing/

call answering with a microphone nearby, and on the other side of the speaker, hidden under a rubber flap you’ll find the micro-USB port and power switch.

Touted at “up to 7 hours worth of high quality music” the battery

for the 9H would be to ensure you use the SteelSeries Engine when using the headset for gaming, as the equaliser really helps to bring the best out of the 9H. Fiddle about with all of the options available to you in the software to find the perfect setup for you, as everyones ears are different.

As for the £135 price tag slapped on the SteelSeries 9H, it is worth every penny.

It starts at a break-neck pace and refuses to slow down, maintaining a ferocious level of infectious energy that makes it almost impossible not to have fun. The bright and vibrant Lego world that these characters inhabit is a visual feast that is difficult to look away from. First of all, the world is enormous and endlessly creative and second of all, the seamless mixture of computer generated animation and stop motion animation is gorgeous. Everything from kitchen appliances to the ocean is made entirely out of Lego pieces, creating truly unique visuals that have never been seen in an animated movie

ging alcoholic, Woody Grant (Bruce Dern), takes a cross-country trip to Nebraska with his estranged son David (Will Forte) in order to collect a million dollars.

Nebraska is a small movie about larger than life people.

Filmed entirely in black and white on a very modest budget, this is essentially a road movie that is more about the journey than the destination. Sure, reaching the final destination means reaching a million dollars, and the prospect of a million dollars is a tantalising one, but Writer Bob Nelson and Director Alexander Payne are far more interested in delving into their characters and exploring their lives. This movie may not be to everyone’s taste; it moves at a very slow pace and whilst this adds to the impeccable sense of realism that shrouds the film, it often feels a little too slow. We spend a lot of time watching characters have conversations that have absolutely nothing to do with

The entire cast bring their Agame. Rising star Chris Pratt, a man who is soon to be a bonafide superstar after starring in the Oscar nominated Her and Marvel’s soon to be released Guardians of the Galaxy, is hysterical as Emmet Brickowski.

He voices the character with a contagious silliness and an untameable zest for life. I genuinely believe that no other actor could have brought the energy that Pratt brought to the role and its further proof that this man is destined for huge things. Morgan Freeman is also fantastic as the mystical, oracle-like Vitruvius; a character who’s nowhere near as intelligent as he’d like to believe.

Whilst it may move at a snail’s pace, Nebraska never reaches the “boring” territory. It is wickedly funny and features some truly brilliant performances. Bruce Dern is wonderful as Woody Grant; he plods through the movie with an almost child-like stubbornness and naivety, refusing to believe those who are desperately trying to tell him that he is simply being scammed by a marketing company and he has not won a million dollars. It’s difficult not to feel sympathy for Woody Grant; he may be a bitter person who’s angry at life and refuses to take responsibility for his actions, but he’s bordering dementia and often forgets where he is or what’s going on. Ultimately, Woody is a lonely, frail old man try-

Business, a super-villain with a diabolical plan to glue the entire universe together. The best thing about the cast is that you can tell how much fun they’re having voicing these characters and it rubs off on you, forcing you to have fun with them.

However, don’t be fooled, there is more to this movie than the simple Lego gimmick – there is a twist towards the end of the movie that completely changes the dynamics of the story and reveals that there is far more to what we have been watching than we initially thought. It’s fantastic.

She is a wrecking-ball of rage who spends the vast majority of the film complaining about her husband and it’s an absolute joy to watch. She is absolutely hysterical and often steals every single scene she’s in. Squibb and Dern have excellent chemistry and watching them together on screen is like watching the ridiculous bickering of a real-life married couple. Personally, I really hope June Squibb wins the Academy Award for Best Actress in a Supporting Role for her performance in Nebraska – she’s that good.

Due to the extremely slow pacing, Nebraska may not win the hearts of the casual movie goer. However, if you can look past the pacing and embrace the characters then you’ll be rewarded with a funny, moving and poignant little movie.

t was a night of celebrations at The Drum as legendary Mary Wilson engaged an audience with a number of the smash hits that made her, and The Supremes, the record-breaking group that they are still to today.

It was a rare chance to not only here her perform, but a unique opportunity to here, firsthand, the story of one of the world's all-time greats.

On this her 'Dare To Dream' tour, part of "Women Of The World," celebrations women, and Black History Month in America, it was an opportunity for the privileged audience to hear her lay bare her life, her relationships and her views, then and now.

Quizzed and cudgelled by the usually inquisitive Shirley Parnell of Aston Performing Arts Academy, Mary was keen to let it all out; her upbringing, with fellow original band members, Florence Ballaed and latterly, Diana Ross, in the Brewster Projects in Detroit, her early years in the industry, as a 13-year-old, there struggle to win over America in the early 1960s, the subsequent worldwide success and her unrelenting life - as a solo singer and humanitarian - ever since. All came out, and much more, eventually: "The Supremes," she said, "was a massive sensation in the States. But here the support was immense. In fact it felt bigger than it was in America."

On the business that is 'show' she did make the point that the industry made us to be not as close as we started out.

The death of Florence, in 1969, still hearts me today, and when Diana left the band, the powers that be made it difficult for us to be together.

That doesn't mean there is friction between us-that's just how the music industry was back then-And not much has changed today. Dian is my Soul Sister and that will never change."

Today she is doing a lot over work for the Humpty Dumpty Institute; a unique non-profit organisation that serves people in the developing world through the implementation of largescale humanitarian projects and through its work with the United Nations. Plus other projects throughout the world.

Not forgetting her first love, though, after the interview and Q+A, Mary couldn't wait to belt out some of the songs that she, and we, love today. "Baby Love," "You Can't Hurry Love," "Stop In The Name Of Love" and "Some Day We'll Be Together" were just some of the alltime classics she belted out. A real treat for the fortunate who attended.

"Stay hunts in the such for the truth," she pleaded. "And don't forsake your soul for a position." Advice that she spread vehemently wherever and whenever.

UB40 Reunion T hree of the original members reggae band, UB40, have announced they are reuniting to record a new album and tour.

Singers Ali Campbell, Astro and keyboard player, Mickey Virtue, made the announcement on their official website which stated that they are in the studio working on a new album.

The Birmingham-based group, formed in 1978, ruled the charts for 30 years

Review & words: Jonathan Maley With what had been spoken about the Five Rivers in mind, it was my upmost pleasure to experience for myself why the rave review restaurant was stealing some of Birmingham’s most ardent trade. Upon entry, I was immediately greeted with a warm smile from the front of house waiter, my jacket was

hung and I was encouraged to take a seat by the bar. ‘How very impressive’ I thought, as I glanced over to a sea of serviced tables, alive with conversation and hungry appetites. The weekend feel was had become very animated despite the reality it was only Thursday, yet Friday morning’s wakeup call could not deter the proceedings to come, or my own enthusiasm to find out more about this striking spectacle.

‘When was the building converted?’ I enquired as the Mill House style interior caught my imagination. ‘No, no Sir, this is all purpose built and new, a lot has been put into the décor so you do not feel as if you are in a chain reaction of food joints.’

The waiter proved more than a good host, he was knowledgeable and passionate, something which any good business inspires their own staff to demonstrate. Before I knew it, my colleague accomplice and I were taken to the melting pot, the hub of the action. Even the Swan napkins replicated an aura of precision and style… we hadn’t even tasted the food yet.

Just as I had reached over to take a second sip from my ‘Old fashioned’ whisky cocktail, the food was upon us. If the entry into the bar was impressive, then the appearance and then taste of the menu was truly spectacular. One by one, the menu’s delicacies made their way over, resonating in a boastful feel of homemade joy and pride. First

came the starters, with an accompanying glass of complimentary wine… some of us had a drive home, so we best be careful not to over indulge, despite the drawing temptations.

Spiced Carrot & Ginger Soup, followed by a tasty trail of Manchurian, a concoction of freshly tightened vegetables, deep fried and simmered to the boil… I couldn’t have ever imagined the opening dish would have my stomach demanding more to come, but it certainly did. The freshness of the veg accompanied by the crisp flavour of the wine drew out the complimentary side in the food critics present, yet for the majority of those seated, they were just happy to have been invited.

For those a little more meat minded, the menu’s starting blocks have also composed Murgh Assiette a wondrous cut of tender chicken breast marinated in three flavoursome spices… it literally melted on the tongue. I believe the expression is, so far, so good! Further starters are available with crab cakes and a lamb dish, spiced potato and garden peas, there is truly something for everyone.

As the Mains dawned, the entertainment and ambience did not waver. The music was befitting of a mid to late end of week feel, upbeat yet not too distracting whilst the hubbub and sheer enjoyment of those around was clear to see.

The insatiable appetites of those present drew requests

for the wine and desert menu minute after minute, whilst the arrival of the in-house management now meant, our main dishes were upon us.

Just as impressive as the delivery of the starter, with each main dish placed strategically for easy access, there also came a story behind each dish. The tales told brought colour and likability behind the menu, suggesting more and more why this restaurant was unique in its parish of Indian cuisine. Whether it was the Tarika Daal, the River’s interpretation of a world famous garlic fashioned dish or the Goan Fish Curry, the effort to uphold the Punjab history with an unending appetite was well and truly captured.

With just enough room to manage a desert, the showcasing of talent was to reach a grande finale and with that, an Indian food crescendo. The signature Samosa Surprise had one rolling their eyes in satisfaction.

The sweetness of the raspberry touched with crust of the outer batter topped off what was a truly memorable evening.

third consecutive year. Last year alone, the attraction welcomed more than 600, 000 visitors with an estimated figure reaching 668,000. The tally outstretched the previous year with 2012’s all-time high of annual visitor numbers.

The news comes just some weeks after the region has boasted future investment into the travel, including rail and air links as well as being named as one of Europe’s top business destinations to watch out for. In 2010, the family of the chocolate industry Cadbury criticised the proposed 11.9 billion pound take over from Kraft, stating the proposal ‘cheap’ and unworthy of the heritage which had been developed.

Less than five years on, visitor figures have soared with 2014 showing little sign of slowing down, having welcomed over 30, 000 visitors since reopening last month.

“The menu’s been led by our executive Head Chef Rashpal Sunner, whose been in the game since the early 80’s so he comes from a big food background. We Started in Walsall, then moved to Birmingham…

After a very successful time on broad street Rashpal then decided to move back to Walsall, and we set up Five Rivers in 2004, starting with private parties such as weddings, engagements parties and then breaking into the corporate sector as well. Through demand, the a’ la carte restaurant was set up…”

“The presentation is very creative and innovative and that’s what set us apart and developed a lot of recognition. You won’t go to another Indian restaurant and see the way food is presented. We’re North Indian, Punjabi and the Five Rivers that flow there and that’s where the inspiration for the food has developed and been nurtured.

Even now we have more ideas, such as the surprise samosa on the desert menu.”

Why did you want to do this here in Walsall?

“It’s good for the region, we’re having a really good time and

people admittedly did have their doubts about setting up the restaurant in Walsall, bit there’s been such an investment that’s been put into it. Hospitality is our mission, from the bar staff to the front of house we have a strong synergy here and again that’s a big part to the success.

Friendly faces, passionate people and knowable people. The Five Rivers are River Indus, Jhelum, Chenab, Ravi and Sutlej so it’s all very much about that homeland being brought here to the region for everyone to experience.”

Library of Birmingham Showcase for Creative Students

T

hree talented art students from Walsall College have seen their masterpieces showcased to thousands of visitors at the newly opened £189m Library of Birmingham, as part of a regional arts project.

The artwork of Katherine Bryony Mills, 21, Taylor Bird, 19, and Angie Roraksa, 19, who are all studying a Level 3 Extended Diploma in Art and Design at Walsall College, has been on display at the flagship Library of Birmingham since a launch night in January.

It is part of an exhibition featuring 50 works of art through the ‘Who Am I?’ project which has explored themes of culture, heritage and identity and is being run by the Leaps & Bounds charity, who work with young people to teach them new skills.

Participants in the project were encouraged to use photography, poetry or fine art to create their A3-size work and throughout the eight week process a number of workshops were held with professional poets and artists to help the students decide on a final design.

The eye-catching artwork created by Walsall College student’s features a watercolourbased picture of a forest track called ‘Within Reflects Without’, a visual brainstorm of emotions entitled ‘Miracles of Matter’ and a Thailand/Birmingham

monument painting called ‘BirmThainey Between Home.’

The exhibition will travel to other venues across Birmingham and the Black Country and has been on display at the new public library in Centenary Square for up to four weeks. The Library of Birmingham opened in September and contains around a million books, making it Europe’s largest public library.

Katherine, who lives near Willenhall, said: “This project has given us the opportunity to express ourselves and create the art we are passionate about. The people who have supported us have been fantastic – the connections we’ve made with professional artists will be invaluable for our future careers.

“The exhibition is a way for the public to see who we think we are and gives young talents the opportunity to flourish, expand and find valuable connections.”

Taylor added: “The comments and feedback we’ve received has been amazing especially as this is our first major exhibition. We’ve done projects at College before

but to have your work on display in the heart of Birmingham is quite surreal – some of the things we’ve learnt about ourselves during the project are still affecting our work now.”

Childcare Chief to prestigious “ receive ” University honour

tudents from Hereward College looking to move into a career in the Media and Journalism industry are to undertake a work placement at The Phoenix newspaper in Birmingham.

It is hoped that their time at the newspaper will encourage the students to become more confident in their skills and enhance their knowledge.

Some of the things the students will be doing include design work for the paper, writing articles for already established features and starting their very own features.

Working in partnership with the newspaper, Phoenix Managing Director Marcia hopes to help the students develop their knowledge and understanding of the world of media.

A student involved in the partnership, Katy Oakes, said, “I am really looking forward to working here and learning new skills. I have already enjoyed the amount of freedom and creativity I have been allowed to have, it’s allowed me to progress quickly!”

Students will be given the chance to work with staff at the magazine to develop their own features which will be featured either in The Phoenix or in our sister publication, Street Cred.

With a diverse range of students, it is hoped that the students will bring a wealth of knowledge and skills to the paper and help further promote it within the local community we serve.

The Phoenix Managing Director commented “I am excited to be working with the students of Hereward College to not only help them develop themselves but also to develop this paper. The skills that these students have already shown to us make me confident that big things will be happening in the near future. Watch this space!”

There's a new PRIDE in Handsworth Wood t's all change at one particular school in Birmingham as it begins a new era in learning.

Grestone Primary School, in Handsworth Wood, is now an Academy with a purpose of creating a new sense of P.R.I.D.E. (perseverance, respect, independence, diversity and excellence) in themselves and their work.

In fact, it's not just a change in status that has taken place. Pupils are now wearing a new coloured uniform – pupils’ scarlet tops are replaced with blue ones and the figure of a lion being the school’s new logo.

The change means stronger links with the nearby Hamstead Hall Academy, which gained academy status itself last June.

Joanne Gray, Head of School at Grestone, said: “These are very exciting times for both schools as it gives students access to such a wide range of educational opportunities.

ith a national shortage of Foster carers across the UK, there are more children than ever who need a caring and loving environment, which every child has the right to experience.

Whether a crisis in the family, illness or relationship difficulties could be some of the reasons

why a child is placed in care.

There are already so many fantastic individuals who foster and adopt children into their families- but we need more ! At the Phoenix, all of our team are committed to raising awareness of fostering and adoption through our campaign not just for the month of May, but for an entire 12 months!

We will be highlighting the inspiring work of current carers, the extensive support and training that is available and the difference that you could be making in a young persons’ life. If you feel that you can offer this, or even if you would like to find out a little bit more – don’t hesitate! It could make the greatest difference to a child’s life.

The 10 Steps 1. Express your interest

Just thinking or definitely considering adoption? Contact your local authority (or your Health and Social Care Trust in Northern Ireland) or a voluntary adoption agency. All agencies have to work to agreed standards and are inspected regularly. It’s fine to talk to several, but you can only register with one. www.baaf.org. uk/agencies is an easy to use agency locator. Don’t be put off if an agency isn’t recruiting or there’s no information event in the near future. There’s a shortage of adopters across the UK so persevere!

2. Preparing to adopt

You may be asked to complete a form and invited to an information event where you can talk to social workers and adopters, or perhaps have an informal 1:1 meeting. You can then decide whether you want to register your interest in going further.

At this stage you are selecting an agency you trust to take you through the assessment process.

In England there’s a two stage process. Stage One covers the

basics. You will be asked to supply references and will agree for medical and other checks to take place. You don’t need to be perfect though. Next you will be invited to attend a preparation group along with other prospective adopters to give you an insight into what adoption means today, learning more about the needs of the children waiting to be adopted. It will help you explore what you are able to offer and whether you wish to commit to the next stage.

At the end of Stage One the agency will confirm that you’ve passed the checks and invite you to start Stage Two. Stage One should take no more than two months, but you may want to set the pace and take more time to think things through, which is fine.

In Scotland and Wales this might be expressed a bit differently but there are timescales and standards to ensure you have all the information you need from the outset, you have the opportunity to attend a preparation group and you know how to complete an application. The same goes

for Northern Ireland except timescales aren’t prescribed.

3. You are assessed

The formal assessment process is required by law and carried out by a social worker. It is sometimes referred to as a home study. The assessing social worker will visit you at home and you will talk through why you want to adopt, the kind of child you would best be able to care for and your overall suitability. You will also be invited to attend more detailed training to prepare you for adoption. In England this is known as Stage Two and you can expect it to take around four months.

Again the process in Scotland, Wales and in Northern Ireland may differ a little in timescales and terminology but following preparation groups, they will carry out a similar home study.

4. Going to panel

Your social worker writes up a report for presentation to an adoption panel. You will be invited to attend. Remember that most people who go to panel are

approved! The panel makes the recommendation, but it will be the agency that approves you.

5. Being linked with a child

As so many children are waiting, agencies are encouraged to explore linking you to a child or children before final approval. If there doesn’t seem to be a good match locally, the net is spread wider through Exchange Days , Adoption Activity Days and national family-finding services such as BAAF’s Be My Parent, or Adoption UK’s Children Who Wait.

If you have been approved but not been matched after three months you should be referred to the Adoption Register of children waiting across England and Wales, Scotland’s Adoption Register or the Adoption Regional Information System in Northern Ireland depending on where you live. Ask your social worker about this.

6. A match is made

Once the link is made, you will be given more information about the child or children, including

their family background, a history of their early years, why the child came into care, the child’s characteristics and any particular needs the child may have. When you have agreed the match, you will attend a matching panel, which will look at whether or not to recommend the match.

In Northern Ireland prospective adopters don’t attend the matching panel otherwise it’s the same.

Once again, the final approval will be given by your agency.

7. Meeting the child

You may have seen a video of your child, or even played together at an Adoption Activity Day. Formal introductions must wait till the match has been approved. They are well planned by the social worker, yourself and the foster carer (assuming the child is in foster care). You can expect to visit the foster carer’s house and plan outings, and the child will visit you at home, including overnight stays.

Gradually, you will be getting to know each other and the child will move in as soon as you’re all ready.

8. Moving in

An exciting and daunting time for all concerned! It doesn’t take much to imagine the mix of emotions this can evoke. Most importantly, it marks the beginning of your life together as a family. You are entitled to statutory adoption leave and pay, and will continue to be supported by your social worker.

9. Making the adoption legal

After a minimum of ten weeks you can apply to the courts for an adoption order. This is the final legal step. It means the child will be legally yours and can take your surname.

10. Your life together

Parenting is one of the most rewarding and most challenging jobs in life. There are bound to be ups and downs! Adoption support is widely available to see you through, so please ask your agency when you need help.

lobal fashion giant H&M have become the latest body to support improving conditions for poverty stricken communities throughout the globe.

A new foundation which will team up with UNCIEF as well as WaterAid has proposed to pour over 180 million in donation fees, spread over a three year continuum. Professor Jeffrey D. Sachs – Director of Earth Institute, said: “I congratulate the H&M Conscious Foundation for choosing to support programs in three areas that are critical to sustainable development. The donations can contribute to big breakthroughs in each area.”

ir India and Birmingham Airport are celebrating after carrying 50,000 passengers on board over 200 Dreamliner flights between Birmingham and India, since launching in August last year.

To celebrate its success in the first six months, leaders of the local Sikh community presented Birmingham Airport with a commemorative plaque to thank the team for launching the flights last year and reconnecting Birmingham with Delhi and Amritsar; an important spiritual centre for the Sikh faith.

Speaking at a ceremony held at Birmingham Airport last week, the Airport’s Aviation Development Director, William Pearson, who received the plaque on behalf of the airport, said: “The Midlands has the second largest Asian

community in the UK, so it’s no surprise that the airline has carried its first 50,000 passengers and experienced over 80% load factors on the route since launching last August.

“The four times a week service to Delhi and Amritsar, using the brand new B787-800 Dreamliner aircraft, with two configurations of business and economy class isn’t just ideal for those visiting friends and relatives, but also offers corporate travellers connections across India, Asia, Europe and North America from Delhi.

Air India will soon be part of Star Alliance which gives passengers a choice of world-wide connections.”

The National Catholic Reporter said Vatican residents are more likely to be old, male,

Shazia Saleem joked in a recent interview that she started her food company ‘simply because I was hungry,’ but the 29 year old from Luton is out to bridge a cultural gap in the market, which celebrates being both British and being a Muslim.

The launched ready-meals business ‘Ieat Foods’ (as in "I eat"), blends a range of traditional British based and Italian produce with a thinner coating of halal.

Ms Saleem who attended Warwick University some eight years ago, decided she was fed up of having to buy her own vegetarian food in order to compensate for her own dietary requirements.

Speaking at a recent television interview, Ms Saleem stated: "Most of my friends at university were non-Muslims, and when we did a weekly food shop together their trolleys were full of really tasty-looking ready meals, and all I could buy were things like cheese and onion pasties," she says.

"It was really frustrating, and I used to whinge a lot that I was missing out. I thought, why wasn't anyone making halal ready meals, other than the odd curry” Ms Saleem left the company offered by Peter Jones two years ago to pursue her own business.

Having conducted market research into her target food based audience, the young entrepreneur has high hopes for business model to succeed.
