Jamaican Consul Marks Five Years in Birmingham O ne of 530 foreign representations in the UK, and one of 20 foreign representations in Birmingham, the Jamaican Consul marked five years of its existence in the city as a beacon for inquiries and questions regarding visa regulations and passport requirements for ex-pats from, and visitors to, the island.

With marked reference to the foundations laid by the now widely acknowledged ‘Windrush Generation’ in the country for further generations of Jamaican nationals settling in the head of of Commonwealth, the celebration for the landmark milestone took place, aptly, at the Pannel Croft retirement village – a place whose retirement-aged residence are that of Jamaican dissent.

Headed by Honorary Consul, Wade Lyn CBE, all was set fair for a night of appreciation for the work carried out – much of which voluntarily – by the Consul staff (which includes Consul Support Monica Coke ad volunteers George Gordon, Julie Cole, plus Colleen and Kenneth Laing).

“There are many who think that the office doesn’t exist,” said Wade, “so, we are getting more out there to let Jamaican people throughout Birmingham and the wider West Midlands know that we are here for them.

As much as this is a celebration of five years, it’s also a ‘statement of intent – by saying ‘we are here for you and your needs.’” “We now look forward to the next 5 years,” Monica (Coke) added.

Birmingham’s Much Loved Sunday Boot now Rebooted

F

ollowing the successful inaugural event in July last year, Birmingham’s Sunday Share will be returning to the city on a permanent basis from Sunday 17th February 7am-11am 2019 providing a welcome addition to the city’s event calendar.

Birmingham’s famous Rea Street South in Digbeth will be the location for this much welcomed event which aims to encourage the diverse communities in the city to come together, meet, chat, share, sell, buy and take part in art, music, and cultural and wellbeing activities.

Birmingham’s Sunday Share will feature a variety of stalls where people meet neighbours, make friends and snag a bargain right in the middle of the Digbeth area of the city currently the focus of major regeneration.

These events are ideal for families who will be entertained with live music from talented local musicians, arts activities and interactive games.

Birmingham’s Sunday Share is independently organised by Friction Arts and The Active

Well Being Society, both based in Birmingham.

As a professional arts organisation Friction Arts works with communities both nationally and internationally.

Through their work they understand how events like this bring communities together and promote wellbeing.

Sandra Hall, Co-Director Friction Arts said “Birmingham’s Sunday Share is a very exciting initiative for us. During our intensive research to create a major archive featuring the now demolished Birmingham Wholesale Markets, it became clear to us that the old Bootsale, which took place there, was sadly missed by so many people.

“We created Birmingham’s Sunday Share as a one-off event last year which was attended by 100’s of people.

“Because of that success we are very pleased that it returns on a more permanent basis and we look forward to welcoming families and friends once again.”

With a background including

that of an electrician, plumber, property management and the afore-mentioned security business, this was always going to be his end-game – to this point, for with it already ahead of its grand launch, Larman already has visions of ‘Ground Central Lounge’ becoming a bi-word for sophisticated entertainment in towns and cities up and down

the land – and beyond; “Why aim for the top of the mountain when you can reach the stars,” he enthused. “You must always know your capabilities – and I definitely know mine.

Having created this all by myself, I know I can do it again and again.

o mark the 500th anniversary of Leonardo da Vinci’s death, Birmingham Museum & Art Gallery (BMAG) will be unveiling a display of 12 drawings by the Renaissance master as part of a nationwide celebration opening on February 1.

This is the first-time visitors can see these 12 works on display in Birmingham and offers a once-in-a-generation opportunity to view them up close in the city.

‘Leonardo da Vinci: A Life in Drawing’ will see 12 simultaneous exhibitions spanning the UK, - through to May 6 where visitors will see some of Leonardo’s greatest drawings from the Royal Collection.

The free exhibition offers an extraordinary insight into Leonardo da Vinci’s mind. He practiced as a painter, sculptor, architect and engineer, amongst many other disciplines, but drawing unified all areas of his work.

The Birmingham exhibition presents works from across Leonardo’s life including scientific studies, a study for St James in the Last Supper, a study of trees and the light falling on leaves, the head of an old bearded man and a storm overwhelming a landscape.

Together they give an insight into the range of interests that he pursued throughout his lifetime.

One of the works in the exhibition - A sheet of miscellaneous studies, c.1940, - appears in a ground-breaking new book, ‘Leonardo da Vinci: A Closer Look,’ published by Royal Collection Trust.

It presents the findings of scientific research, using a range of non-invasive techniques to reveal new details about Leonardo’s working practices and creative process.

Works including ‘A sheet of miscellaneous studies’ are examined in unprecedented detail, uncovering details invisible to the naked eye.

BMAG will bring Leonardo’s techniques alive for visitors through an engaging learning programme which includes guided tours, a talk from Martin Clayton, Head of Prints and Drawings at Royal Collection Trust, and family art activities.

Katie Morton, Exhibitions Curator at Birmingham Museums Trust, said: “This is an exciting opportunity to see drawings by Leonardo da Vinci up close and get a glimpse into the mind of the archetypal ‘Renaissance Man’.

“Leonardo’s genius is truly visible through these drawings and we are thrilled to be part of this nationwide celebration with Royal Collection Trust. We are sure this exhibition will be hugely popular and urge visitors not to miss their chance to be a part of it.”

Shop around to get better deals

T

here is a clear message in the title of this month’s views and we can all benefit from it especially in the economic climate of the times and the uncertainty that surrounds us in Britain.

Money does not grow on trees in any household nor is there a pot of gold at the bottom of the garden are two often used phrases that spring to mind when out shopping or doing so online.

Some of us are familiar with the terms bartering and haggling when shopping and they will always remain an important facet of doing business.

I can recall as a child going with relatives to the market whilst living in Jamaica and they would make sure to ‘beat down’ the price of the ground provisions on display. It was for them a natural thing to do.

I distinctly remember those relatives also going from one market trader to the next with me lagging behind, to check the quality of the goods and more importantly to compare and contrast the prices before probably coming full circle to the first market trader to buy the goods!!!!!

As a child I used to find that rather annoying and frustrating as could not see the logic, rhyme or reason in that approach.

I suppose it is that early Jamaican upbringing which prepared me for doing likewise every year without fail when we get the renewal for car insurance, house and household contents insurance, breakdown cover for our car, landline/internet and mobile phone charges/rental to name but a few.

For many years as a family

we have never put in any insurance claims but on receiving the annual renewal letters the amount being requested always increases by quite a lot for no particular reason.

Interestingly we have never received a letter offering us a reduction for having not put in any claims over the previous year(s.)

It is a standard procedure of mine to contact the various companies and remind them that we have been valuable customers for several years and if they want to continue with our patronage they need to decrease their exorbitant renewal fees/charges instead of increase them.

It works every time and sometimes we end up paying less than the previous year. It begs the question why did the company hike up the price in the first place?

I would really encourage more people to do this as why should one give up their hard earned money to companies that are already making a lot of profit?

Please do not accept the first offer on the table and use this tried and tested method which has saved us money.

Once a company hears the news that you will take your custom elsewhere you will note how quickly they will give you a more realistic renewal offer and that is what business and competition is about since hardly any companies have a monopoly on products or services these days.

The moral of the story is that we as consumers need to shop around and by so doing save. I therefore urge everyone to adopt this approach.

McDonald's launches first ever Veggie Happy Meal

cDonald’s UK has introduced the first ever vegetarian Happy Meal, along with a new Spicy Veggie Wrap on the main menu. The two new additions are in response to the growing customer trend for more meat-free meal choices.

Mum of two, Frankie Bridge, was one of the first customers to try the delicious new vegetarian wrap options, as she joins the 33% of McDonald’s customers who think it’s important that they start including more meat-free meals into their families’ diet.

She said: “Having more meal options that the kids enjoy makes my life all the easier. The Veggie Happy Meal wrap flavour was literally chosen by children, so I know it’s something that my son Parker will love too.

“I think it’s important that our diet is varied and full of choice, and for me, this means introducing more meat free meals… We are so excited that we can now have that at our fave Maccy D’s!”

Working with the Britmums network and Vegetarian Society, McDonald’s invited parents and their children to select the final

flavour.

The discerning tasters selected the delicious Red Pesto Goujon wraps, which have been accredited by the Vegetarian Society. The ingredients are all also dairy free.

The introduction of the first ever Veggie Happy Meal and the new Spicy Veggie Wrap provides greater choice, which is considered to be one of the most important factors to customers and their families, when it comes to thinking about where to eat.

Lynne Elliot, Chief Executive the Vegetarian Society said: “We’re really proud to have worked closely with McDonald’s for over 10 years and it’s great to see their veggie menu developing, especially as McDonalds tell us a third of their customers think it’s important to eat more veggie meals.

It’s time to let busy parents into bus lanes Busy British parents could save hours on the school run every term if a new proposal to allow them into bus lanes is rolled out.

Motoring experts at LeaseCar. uk have launched a campaign to allow mums and dads to skip the morning rush hour and bypass queuing traffic by using bus lanes, alongside taxis and motorcycles.

Families who must promptly arrive at school before work often get held up on congested British roads and need help to avoid lateness.

Allowing parents to make use of quiet bus lanes would save them valuable time and help sleep deprived pupils cope with annually increasing educational pressure.

A quicker journey to school should mean children have more time at home to spend on

homework and extracurricular activities, with the family and resting.

The average distance children aged 11 to 16 live from their school is over three miles and less than 40% can travel on foot, with nearly half of primary school pupils also having to rely on petrol power to get to the front gates every morning (DfT).

Popular schools’ catchment areas continue to expand despite unreliable school buses and public transport, but there are also over 15 million British cars ferrying commuters to work on a daily basis (RAC).

Added to the variety of other personal, public and business traffic on the neglected UK road network, it is no surprise that rush hour tailbacks are caused.

But the suggestion to ease congestion on the school run would be as cheap and easy as

installing a few signs on the side of the road permitting parents to use the red lane.

Taxis, motorcycles and bicycles have an existing invitation to use bus lanes in many locations, so adding families on the school run to the list should be simple.

Gareth Roberts of LeaseCar. uk, who have come up with the suggestion, said: “Busy mums and dads just don’t have time to be sat in traffic on the way to school.

“Picture the scene: your children are arguing, have got breakfast everywhere and forgotten their P.E., so now you’re stuck in traffic and running late.

“The last thing you should then have to do is sit in a jam for half an hour, inching between sets of lights, while an empty taxi or motorcycle sails by.”

A

s Britain’s exit of the European Union gathers apace, one of the seemingly forgotten dynamics, is the instinctive nature of immigrants’ entrepreneurial dynamics across European frontiers.

Much of this is either excluded or ignored in the current Brexit debate. And yet, the issue of immigration, migration and emigration was central to the ‘policy periscope’ of voters’ psyche in June 2016.

For years, European officials have been assessing and evaluating the progress of immigrants in terms of their economic and social contribution to the continent.

They have looked exhaustively, at hundreds of policy measures in various parts of Europe to determine the impact of immigrant labour on local and national economies.

Seldom has British officials been doing this kind of important policy ‘stocktaking’.

This can help to allay fearnegation as well as unwitting scare-mongering, all of which threaten to convulse Brexit altogether.

The contribution of immigrants to the British economy has been captured in ‘Entrepreneurial Diversity in a Unified Europe’, a little-known publication that examines the context of business startingups and the development of entrepreneurship.

Distinctions are made between ‘ethnic minority entrepreneurs’, ‘immigrants’ and those born of immigrant families residing in host countries.

The focus is on key policy measures supporting the evolution, growth and development of migrantled commercial and social enterprises across Europe.

A total of 146 policy measures have been identified, with much of them existing in the UK, Germany, the Netherlands and Belgium.

These measures have been either co-financed by European and/or national funding institutions.

So, why such an important economic policy matter hasn’t been discussed by European and British negotiators?

Will this be part of the final negotiated trade settlement between Britain and the EU? Or will this matter remain one of ideological conjecture?

There are many object lessons to be learnt about immigrant entrepreneurship if Britain is determined to ‘go it alone’ in terms of commerce and realignment with conventional arrangements.

The necessity to research further variables among migrant entrepreneurship, must be increased, utilising the universally-credited ‘ethnic monitoring’ principle including the Standard Industrial Classification (SIC) model.

The scarcity of consistent and reliable data on immigrants according to their ‘true national status’ along with their industry sector and business segment representation, all have adverse effects on the ‘identity quest’ issue.

It corrosively undermines the way in which local policy is being interpreted, more so, implemented.

• Build/rebuild the skill-competencies among immigrants • Boost the cultural, financial and social resources of entrepreneurs.

• Initiate suitable market conditions for the potential growth of firms.

• Enact favourable regulation - local, national and supranational level.

• Strengthen inter-agency and functional technical cooperation arrangements.

• Incentivise enterprise partnerships between public, private and NGOs. • Maximise the policy instrument to promote the unique work of immigrants.

Wolverhampton businesses reach £1 million in sales on eBay programme

nline marketplace eBay has announced that businesses on its Retail Revival programme, a partnership with the City of Wolverhampton to help small retailers online, have reached £1 million in sales in just three months.

The city retailers have reported an average sales increase of 41% in the three-month period – bucking many of the woes faced by retailers across the country in the face of reduced consumer confidence and increased economic uncertainty.

The new figures cap off a huge year for eBay’s scheme, which has seen 182 sellers take part globally,

generating 76,000 sales.

The partnership between eBay and Wolverhampton is running until September 2019 and sees experts from eBay provide exclusive support to small retailers who want to start up or expand their online presence, seeking to grow the local economy and demonstrate that online and high street retail can survive and thrive together.

Participants in the programme benefit from one-on-one support to create a personalised eBay shop, a comprehensive training program that covers eBay selling basics as well as digital skills such as Search Engine Optimisation and promotional support.

One business that has benefitted is Toolsave, which sells products for home and garden improvements. Founder Fred Evans, whose brother David is also enrolled on the programme, said: “Since enrolling on the Retail Revival programme, there has been a noticeable buzz around the city. I’ve known about eBay for years, and the Retail Revival programme came at exactly the right time for my business.”

Returning Resident, Frederica, Building a New Hope in JA A

fter making huge strides in the medical field in the UK, a former Birmingham resident has gone ‘above and beyond’ in her new home, on the Caribbean.

Ex Handsworth Grammar student, Frederica Huggins, is leading a major campaign in her Jamaica homeland as she heads a numerous development projects - which include the creation of the Caenwood Road Community Centre – in Hope Bay, in her native Portland parish.

The former manager at the Royal Hospital for Neuro-disability – which provides specialist care, therapies and innovative technology to meet the complex needs of people disabled by ABI – in London, set up the centre in the rural district located on the outskirts of Hope Bay when she realized that there were no facilities available for social gatherings, health provisions, or skills training.

Now, after 4 years of determination and singlemindedness from the former Southbank University manager, there is a multipurpose building equipped with kindergarten and sporting facilities which offers skills training in areas like barbering, cosmetology, tailoring, mining, and construction.

A proud president, Frederica, said; “Thanks to the Caenwood Road Citizens Association here is a modern-day, fully functional hub which provides educational and social opportunities for the local residents, plus those nearby.

“I like exploring new things and am always very creative whilst meeting people and exchanging ideas,” she continues.

“Having done our own fundraising efforts to start the project this now gives the community a sense of ownership and also provides the residents here with the relevant skill set required for work in the construction industry.”

A strong believer in a healthy active lifestyle, Londoner, and returning resident, Huggins, who, now retired, spearheaded the initiative, now believes that the residents of Caenwood Road and the surrounding communities including Union, Hope Bay and Cooling Spring, After decades of neglect, the centre shows how, by taking matters into their own hands in seeking to develop their community, these residents hope that neighbouring communities will adopt their idea.

the Caenwood Association has completed several successful projects, including the erection of a community sign, beautification activities, and the construction of a bus shelter.

“Now that the centre is built by the community,” Mrs Huggins said, “with our own fundraising efforts to start the project, I hope this will be the template for similar projects throughout the length and breadth of Jamaica.

“The Caenwood Road Citizens Association and the residents of Hope Bay have done themselves proud.”

Frederica would like to thank the Rotary Club in Jamaica for their help, and she is still looking for support for the running andongoing building work for the centre.

he British Heart Foundation is urging residents to pen a message of love to their nearest and deare, by purchasing one of its ‘Love Notes’ just in time for Valentine’s Day. From a Shakespearean-style sonnet to a simple emoji, the public can head into one of the BHF’s 550 clothing shops and pick up a love note for just £1 (small) or £2 (large) before writing a heartfelt note to a loved one. The messages will then be displayed in the store window until February 15.

More than 110,400 people in Birmingham alone are living with heart and circulatory conditions, including those who have survived heart attacks and strokes.

All money raised from the sales of Love Notes will go towards the BHF’s vital research into heart

and circulatory disease and to help beat the heart break of those affected.

Last year the British Heart Foundation’s ‘Love Notes’ campaign broke a world record for the longest chain of paper hearts with a total of 17,938 notes.

The record-holding chain measured almost 1.5 miles long, the equivalent to 25 football pitches.

Noted for creating the awardwinning Wassifa Showcase sound system, whilst growing up in Handsworth, for Brown, now a leading figure at South & City College Birmingham and who also heads Mykal Wassifa Brown C.I.C – a company which educates children and young people through music - receiving his ‘gong’ at Buckingham Palace is the biggest form of recognition he has received to date.

“I am hugely grateful for this recognition,” the 57-year-old quoted. “But, I am just one of many who have been on this long and often ‘bumpy’ journey.

Award-winning infrastructure company secures major £38m Network Rail contract

tory Contracting is set for major expansion and job creation after being selected to deliver additional Network Rail contracts for one of England’s main rail routes.

The infrastructure company has been awarded framework contracts for structures work on the South of the LNW (London North Western) rail route, which covers Crewe to London, and property work from Preston to Crewe.

group of lucky sixth formers spoke of their “inspirational” meetings with two of the world’s most powerful women, Michelle Obama and Cherie Blair as the students, from John Willmott School in Sutton Coldfield, travelled to London for two special events.

The school was given 20 tickets from the 200 which Mrs Obama herself allocated to students from across the UK as invitation to the Southbank Centre for ‘Becoming: An Evening with Michelle Obama’

as a result of the school’s ongoing links with Penguin publishing house.

The wife of former US President, Barak, had seated all students in the front few rows to ensure that they had the best experience with each one leaving the venue with a copy of her book ‘Becoming’ to read on their journey home.

Reflecting on her memoir, Michelle Obama invited the audience into her world, chronicling the experiences that have shaped her – from her childhood in Chicago to her years as an executive, balancing the demands

2 in 3 people would pick a different career if they could choose again As the New Year saw the nation return to work, January still proves a popular time for considering career resolutions, as new research released shows that nearly a third (32%) of people in Birmingham would be looking to achieve something that makes them happier if they were to change their current career.

The survey of over 3,000 people for the national ‘Get Into Teaching’ campaign, highlights the public’s appetite and motivations for changing careers across the board and the drivers in looking for something new.

This appetite for change, and interest in teaching among those at a career crossroads, is also highlighted by registrations of interest in teaching from potential career changers - in January 2018 they were almost double that of students and graduates, 10,952 versus 6,079 respectively, as people searched for a more fulfilling career.

Previous research from the campaign shows 64% of people in England said they were grateful to a teacher or teachers for the impact they had in shaping the person they are today – underlining how teaching could be a rewarding option for those looking to switch.

Academy in search of After-School Choir AC Academy Solihull is on the lookout for new recruits aged 7-16 to join its popular afterschool choir with young singers of any ability welcome - and there are no auditions. What’s more, it’s free!

The choir meets weekly on Thursdays from 4-5pm and has recently moved to a new venue at The Loft, West Mall in Chelmsley Wood.

Led by a qualified trainer from the nationally-acclaimed choir and music education charity Armonico Consort, the children will learn a wide range of music – from charttopping hits, to popular musicals and classical favourites – in a fun and engaging way. he importance of Apprenticeships was discussed during a Prime Minister’s Question Time session, with greater investment set to double in the scheme to nearly 2.5billion by next year.

With bridging the UK skills gap high on the list of government priorities, PM Theresa May was accompanied by Chancellor of the Exchequer, Philip Hammond and Mayor of the West Midlands, Andy Street, to the headquarters of adi Group in Kings Norton, in Birmingham, to highlight the multi-disciplinary engineering firm’s work in inspiring young people to a career in engineering.

During her visit Prime Minister May tweeted her praise for adi’s ‘wonderful apprentices’ and the opportunities delivered by the firm’s ‘quality apprenticeships.’

Establishing in 1990, the Group has seen ongoing growth with massive ambitions for the years ahead with job skills central to plans - with the firm recently welcoming 10 new apprentices, five of whom came from the business’ pioneering preapprenticeship scheme – testimony to that.

There are now 25 apprentices there with it having made a commitment by signing up to the 5% club, which states that it aims to employ 5% of its total workforce as apprentices by 2020.

Explaining the importance of apprenticeships and also welcoming the PM’s visit, CEO Alan Lusty explained; “Giving youngsters the skills they need for the world of work is vital, particularly at a time of such rapid technological change.

“And I’m a walking example of why. Were it not for an apprenticeship, this company and the jobs it has created wouldn’t exist.”

Mayor’s Mentors programme providing ladder of opportunity into construction sector The evolving skyline of the West Midlands is to be transformed further still by the efforts of a number of construction experts who have recently joined The Mayor’s Mentors initiative launched last year by the West Midlands Mayor, Andy Street.

The latest business to join the scheme, which is to helping young people develop life skills and gain the advice they need to flourish is the international consultancy and construction company Mace, which recently signed up a sixth senior member of its Midlands team.

One mentee, 26-year old Mustafa Abdillahi, who is currently being supported by Mace, said: “With my background in mechanical engineering, I was unsure of what route to take next and John has spent time helping me to work that out; by encouraging me to study for a masters in project management.

“As a result, I’m now shadowing

John and his team at Mace, whilst I work towards an MSc at the University of Birmingham.”

Originally from Sweden, Mustafa moved to Birmingham when he was 15-years old. Working part-time as a CCTV operator, he graduated from University in 2017.

Mayor Street, said: “One of the first things I did after becoming Mayor was launch the Mayors Mentors initiative because I passionately believe that one onone-support through mentoring gives young people the best chance for the future.

“By sharing knowledge and experience, Mentors help to give young people the life skills and advice they need to flourish and fulfil their potential.

“Already we have exceeded our target of connecting over 1,000 young people in the West Midlands with mentors and it is great that Mustafa will be the latest person to

apprenticeships like ours.

Businesses have a real role to play in inspiring young people and giving them the skills they need to succeed.”

In the primary school competition, Felix Clune, Som Shah, Adam Franks and Yuvan Raja from St George’s Weybridge were crowned champions, fighting off competition from teams from Boughton Leigh Junior School, Elvetham Heath Primary School, Rothersthorpe C of E Primary School and Nelson Primary School.

And in the secondary school

contest, Ittu Phago, Leo Siby, Pritesh Mistry and Adam Marlow from Lawrence Sheriff School were victorious, beating teams from John Hampden Grammar School, Bluecoat Wollaton Academy, St John’s on the Hill and Altrincham Grammar School.

The children all took part in two dramatic heats to make it to the final where they battled against one another under the watchful eye of maths guru and University legend, Bobby Seagull.

Using teamwork, initiative and mathematical prowess, St George’s Weybridge and Lawrence Sheriff School scored the highest number of points on the day.

Annie Zaidi BEM – Moors’ Woman of Excellence

n appearance, she is as regular a young Pakistani Asian hijab-wearing Muslim as they come, but, behind that facade Annie Zaidi BEM is as unique as they come.

With a UEFA B coaching badge to hand, she already has coaching with the Football Association, Leicester City FC and the Birmingham County FA on her evergrowing C.V. Now, in addition, she recently took up the position of Head Coach of fourth-tier side Solihull Moors Ladies, in addition to her continuing to work as head coach of the club’s Under-16 Boy’s academy.

The Coventry woman, who received a British Empire Medal for services to coaching in the New Year Honours list in 2017, also oversees the Under-13s and Under-9s Boys’ teams - in managerial and technical coaching roles.

Taking on the lead role at the club, alongside former Burton Albion Community Trust Female Football Coordinator Lucy Jelf and Dan Kembery, whose previous coaching includes a spell coaching Birmingham City Women, she’s going above and beyond to avoid being defined by scrupulous labels, as she strives to be noticed for her talent – and

nothing else.

Known widely as ‘Coach Annie,’ Zaidi has been working with Solihull’s boys’ youth teams since 2017. "I'm overwhelmed and honoured to be coaching in the Moors set-up," she said.

"After my first game everything was great. It’s challenging me as a coach and also developing me.

“I’m quite honoured to be asked for such a significant, high-profile role within the club.”

“Clearly emotional about breaking down boundaries to make the move into a leading football management role, he new Moors Ladies manager continued; “From what I’ve seen at training and from what I’ve seen from my first game, the table position doesn’t justify the talent that we’ve got in the team – we just had a bad run and all teams go through that.

“This is a challenge, as all the others in my life have been, but I am pretty confident that we’ll be OK for the season.

“It’s about the environment that I create.

You have to be in the right environment giving players a platform where they can freely express themselves."

Although Annie has been in and out of football, the one constant since she began playing in the garden with her two older brothers being her love of the game. She stopped playing aged 14, feeling there was

no place for her in women’s football.

“You can take my ball and boots away” she says, “but you can’t take away my passion for the game. Even though I wasn’t playing football it was always there, in my heart. I watched it, I read magazines and bought the sticker books.”

She did a Master’s in community development at Durham University with youth work studies creating the chance to be involved in football - she was encouraged into coaching for her placement.

“I always said I wanted a job where I could wear trainers, because I had more trainers than high heels,” Zaidi says.

“One of my placements was in the west end of Newcastle. Bear in mind this was after 9/11 and 7/7 and perceptions of Muslim people were very negative. You can imagine; a 5ft 2in brown girl from Coventry saying: ‘All right lads, let’s play football.’

“The racist and sexist abuse happened, but I kept coming back. After week five, another group on the next pitch started hurling abuse at me. Before myself or my line manager could intervene, the boys did, they had my back. I was like: ‘YES!!!’”

People in the professional game, though, told her to stick to community or female coaching and forget the elite pathway.

But, meeting people who believed in her

- like Wallace Hermitt, co-founder of the Black and Asian Coaches Association, Chris Ramsey and Les Ferdinand took her to Queens Park Rangers while she was working towards her Uefa B licence.

“They put so much time and effort into me,” Zaidi recalls. “They wouldn’t have done it if they hadn’t seen something special in me.”

With help from Hermitt she has set up the ‘Coach AnnieZ Foundation,’ working with young girls and encouraging them to follow their dreams.

Having been given the Helen Rollason Award for inspiration in 2015 and a British Empire Medal in 2017, Zaidi is a just Woman of Excellence.

She received the British Empire Medal, for services to football coaching, in 2017.

aunching with just two performers in 2012, Elegant Entertainment, luxury entertainment specialists, is going from strength to strength.

With residencies in some of the region’s best-loved hotels, bars and restaurants, including Malmaison, Radisson, Clayton Hotel and Marco Pierre White, the Birmingham-based group of musicians is proving it’s more than just a one-hit wonder for the city.

As a pianist and a singer, husband-and-wife duo Benjamin and Chloe-Jean Grey dreamed of

creating a business out of their passions.

Envisaging a musical collective where each member felt part of a family, they wanted to give talented musicians a chance to grow their talents, while earning money in a notoriously hard-tobreak industry.

Not only did they want to showcase these talents to the masses, but they wanted to demonstrate the wealth of talent both from and to Birmingham, where the team currently reside.

From this, Elegant Entertainment was born; since then, it has grown over the last six years to have

performed close to 5000 sets.

What’s more, the group has started to offer services beyond performing, planning parties, weddings and other memorable occasions as part of its repertoire.

Even with its rapid rise to the top, Benjamin Grey, Co-Founder and pianist at Elegant Entertainment, is focussed on ensuring that the community-feel remains front and centre.

He commented: “We are a huge musical family, and, in that respect, we all sing from the same song sheet – excuse the pun! Every member of Elegant Entertainment is integral to maintaining this ethos and we always recruit with this in mind.

Sparrow’s ‘Sa Sa Yea’ gets iDRUM update In an era where the Calypso genre is losing some of its biggest musical icons, a team of musical professionals and enthusiasts hailing from Dominica, St. Vincent, St. Lucia, Trinidad, Barbados and North-America is paying homage to the legendary singer, The Mighty Sparrow, with an updated 2019 version of the Calypsonian’s 1969 hit ‘Sa Sa Yea’ just in time for the 2019 Carnival season.

The aptly titled ‘iDRUM Sa Sa Yea (2019 Version)’ was conceptualised by Dominicanborn, Toronto-based international artist Davidson Elie, known by the industry names dCONCEPT and iDRUM (an art performance concept) - blending the talents of drummers, DJs, instrumentalists, dancers and vocalists and fuses live and recorded original House music with Afro Caribbean and World elements.

This 2019 version connects the elements of pre 1980’s Calypso, modern Soca and original House Music, with live vocals, authentic Creole language components,

Afro-Caribbean percussion, saxophone, steel pan.

For this track, Davidson partnered with famed House DJ/ Producer Gene King of Shines Recordings. Gene was able to create an interesting palate of musical flavours.

Blue/Orange Peels Back The Layers of Mental Health and Race

N

ot long before rehearsals at Birmingham Rep began, actor Ivan Oyik took to Twitter. “You know when you read a script over and over again and always find something new?” he wrote.

“Yeah, that feeling.”

He was thinking about Blue/Orange, which opens at Birmingham Rep this month and he still has the same feeling.

Playing the part of Christopher, a patient due to be released from hospital after an enforced stay in

a psychiatric ward, he continues to be beguiled by the layers of meaning. “As you dissect it and analyse it, there’s always more,” he says. “There are so many themes layered in the play.

It reflects modern times even though it was written almost 20 years ago. It still feels like it could have been written yesterday.”

Written by Joe Penhall, Blue/Orange premiered at the National Theatre in 2000 before transferring to the West End and picking up a raft of awards. It tells the story of Christopher, who is sectioned to a psychiatric unit where professionals wrangle over his diagnosis and treatment.

When Christopher tells the specialists he is the son of the former Ugandan president Idi Amin, he opens a Pandora’s box of racism, misunderstanding, prejudice, professional rivalry and bigotry.

The play is a three-hander with Richard Lintern of Silent Witness fame playing the senior consultant Robert and Thomas Coombes as junior

consultant, Bruce, alongside Ivan Oyik. The new production is directed by Birmingham Rep’s associate director, Daniel Bailey.

Richard Lintern says both the play and his role are thoughtprovoking.

“Whenever I talk to my friends about the play, if you don’t present it in the right way, it sounds like the worst play in the history of the world because it’s about mental health and race,” Richard says.

“But it’s actually hysterically funny and it’s a play that has issues in it which will touch virtually everyone in the audience. They will either have these issues themselves or they will have friends who have issues about confidence, about crises in people’s lives or about mental health in one way or another.”

And Richard believes audience members will also have strong opinions over the decisions surrounding the future for Christopher.

“The two psychiatrists, a younger one and an older one,

have very different views about how the young man should be treated.

“And so it ends up with the audience members becoming almost amateur psychiatrists themselves because they will either agree or disagree with the course of treatment which one or other of the psychiatrists is recommending.”

The specialists are not just influenced by their age and experience – their views are also coloured by the fact that Christopher is black.

“Race massively impacts on those decisions – whether there’s an unconscious bias or a conscious bias,” says Richard.

“I’ll leave the people who come and see the show to decide whether or not, certainly my character, has a hidden agenda.

Exciting Year Ahead Dedicated Seat honour for Royal Town Hall Following a record breaking pantomime season, Sutton Coldfield Town Hall has announced some exciting new shows for 2019 including internet comedy sensations Gary Powndland and Jonathan Pie through to children's TV stars Pip Ahoy!, Rastamouse and Basil Brush.

The addition of the new Sir Doug Ellis Bar and a freshly decorated lounge has received very positive feedback over Christmas and the Town Hall - a charity venue run by Royal Sutton Coldfield Town Hall Trust - has experienced a rise in the level of private bookings for parties and weddings.

As well as focusing on fundraising in 2019 for essential refurbishments and improvements to the building, the team is increasing the variety of shows on sale this year.

Funding from the Royal Sutton Coldfield Town Council's Community Grant Programme has enabled the venue to replace and improve essential technical equipment, resulting in a much improved

experience for performers and audiences.

On the new shows Development Manager Julie Rennison commented; "As well as some great titles for musicals performed by excellent local musical theatre societies, including ‘The Addams Family,’ ‘Joseph and the Amazing Technicolor Dreamcoat,’ ‘Evita’ and ‘Top Hat!,’ we're introducing more family and touring shows to bring in people who have perhaps not visited us before.

“We want to encourage daytime use of the building and would encourage event planners to come and have a look at the improvements which are being made."

Touring music shows include ‘The Upbeat Beatles,’ ‘The Elvis Years,’ direct from the West End show ‘Jailhouse Rock,’ ‘Walk Like a Man’ - the story of Frankie Valli and the Four Seasons and ‘The James Taylor Story,’ with leading Shirley Bassey artist Joanne Copeman appearing in ‘The Girl From Tiger Bay.’

Mark Goucher and firsttime producer Jason Donovan have announced that actor and Strictly Come Dancing winner Joe McFadden will star in their brand-new production of the much-loved glittering hit musical Priscilla, Queen of the Desert which will visit Birmingham Hippodrome for the very first time from April 13-18.

The tour marks Donovan’s first time as a producer, having performed in the cast of the original West End production and two subsequent UK tours – with the producing team completed by Gavin Kalin and Matthew Gale.

He said: “I’m over the moon to be taking on this new and exciting challenge in a musical that I have been a massive fan of for such a

T here are so many award shows on that it is hard keeping up with them.

From Grammy to Bollywood, Golden Globe to BAFTA, BRITs to OSCAR’s, Black Reel, Tony, Online Film & Television Association, EMMY and even the Raspberries too.

There are so many different award shows during this time of the year that it is hard keeping up with all of them.

Some people don't know who the award show honors until it is aired.

Celebrities are honored several times during the year for their contributions in entertainment whether it is making music or acting in films, theater, or television.

Awards shows are like sports: There's competition, bloodsweat-and-tears (if you think those women's feet aren't bleeding from those heels, you're mistaken), and, most importantly to networks, people who actually watch them live.

Sam Fender launches into 2019 with new single and Spring dates

BRITs Critics’ Choice Winner Sam Fender is pleased to announce details of a new single.

It is out now through Polydor Records.

To coincide with its launch, a new headline tour is also announced for May. If 2018 felt like a noteworthy twelve months for North Shields musician Sam Fender, in truth, those first few chapters of his story have barely been written.

With a debut album in the works for later this year, his opening bow in the US currently being rubberstamped, and a handful of sold-out UK shows already long-since in the diary, 2019 is surely when it starts getting serious.

Following a hectic year of touring, signing a record deal, and becoming one of the hottest new names in the industry and beyond, Sam concluded 2018 being

awarded his first BRIT Award, as the Critics’ Choice for the year ahead. the road, and is determined to repay the faith with a supersonic 2019.

Kicking off this month with a new single, Play God is one of the songs that first set him out on his journey.

Play God was recorded in North Shields, and produced by longstanding friend and collaborator Bramwell Bronte.

Following a pair of long since sold-out shows in Manchester and London next month, Sam will now play six more headline dates in May. The dates kick off on the May 2 at the Ritz in Manchester, and conclude at Bristol’s SWX on the May 13.

He plays The Institute, Birmingham on May 10.

Birmingham Set To Welcome The Symphony Orchestra of India

The pride that Zane has in what he and the Orchestra have achieved in such a short space of time is evident as he gushes about their achievements and the upcoming tour.

“This is something that we dreamt of when we started the

Orchestra, that we would have an orchestra that we, Mumbai and the nation could be proud of.

“We’ve reached the point that we can tour internationally after only 13 years, having been created in 2006.

“We’re extremely excited that Birmingham is our first stop, I can’t wait for the rehearsal in that Russel Johnson, Artec hall, let alone the actual performance!”

“People may be surprised, as they may believe that the Orchestra is one that is representative of just Indian player, but that is obviously not

the case in any Orchestra.

“There are at least 30 nations represented in the SOI.” Giving back to the community and bringing home grown talent up and nurturing it is a massive part of what the SOI does.

“We have taken children fromt he age of 7 onwards and trained them to a very high level, to the point that at the age of late teens, some of them will be ready to join the orchestra.”

Zakir Hussain makes a long awaited return to Birmingham to perform his Peshkar, a tabla concerto commissioned in 2015

by India’s National Centre of Performing Arts.

“As a doffing of the cap to the strong traditionalists of Hindustani music, it is almost identical to a traditional Table solo.

“The way it’s written it’s a marvelous escape for 22 minutes exploring the combination of the tabla and the orchestra.”

Royal Wedding Gospel Singers Seek Choirs To Perform With Them At Symphony Hall

Children’s and youth choirs from across Birmingham are being given the opportunity to perform alongside Royal Wedding gospel singers The Kingdom Choir at Symphony Hall in May. The Kingdom Choir became a household name following the stunning performance of Stand By Me at the wedding of HRH Prince Harry and the Duchess Of Sussex

last May. The choir’s rendition of Stand By Me went straight in at Number 1 on the Billboard Gospel Songs Chart after the wedding and received more than 10 million views on YouTube.

And now children’s and youth choirs are being given the opportunity to perform with the gospel stars when they come to

Symphony Hall on Friday, May 10.

Karen Gibson, conductor of The Kingdom Choir, said: “Being part of the Royal Wedding was such an honour and we were delighted to be part of such a prestigious national day of celebration.

“As we tour the UK in 2019, we can’t wait to meet people across the country – especially young singers” Town Hall Symphony Hall have worked with local choirs for over a decade, as the home of Town Hall Gospel Choir and Community Spirit.

by Town Hall Symphony Hall in partnership with THSH Associate Artists, Black Voices which offers local community choirs the opportunity to share repertoire and perform as a collective in a largescale concert in Symphony Hall.

Soaring Success for Innovative Birmingham Burlesque Company A

Birmingham Burlesque dancer has been seeing shows and classes sell out as his dance company shoots to success.

Founder, Danny Phillips set up his Burlesque dance company, House of Allure over a year ago with classes held on Wednesdays and Sundays at Robanna Studios.

The classes welcome over 18-year-olds of any background and ability to learn a variety of styles and techniques including originally choreographed heels, burlesque and Latin routines.

Danny told The Phoenix: “I founded House of Allure as a direct result of the success I had in founding the Birmingham City University Burlesque Society.

“The society was hugely successful putting on performances as a range of Birmingham venues.

We’ve have had many successful shows like at Birmingham Pride Parade, The O2 Institute, The O2 Academy and various others’ “I realised after the success of the society, both commercially and intimately, that this was the direction I wanted my life to go.

I wanted to help and teach others about sexuality, empowerment and give individuals the opportunity to express their art, beauty, selfexpression within Birmingham.

He discovered the impact he was having on people while teaching for the society. Members didn’t judge each other on their mental health, disability, race, gender or beauty standards. Instead everyone started to celebrate their individuality.

“Students would often lack confidence such as throwing up before class and wanting to leave university, but later went on to dance in front of thousands at Birmingham Pride happy, secure

and healthy. To me this change is so important.

“My goal is to set up a strong presence in Birmingham that helps people engage in this art form to celebrate our differences, and inject more energy and positivity into the world.”

House of Allure is Birmingham’s newest empowerment presence, which focuses on promoting sex appeal, confidence and fitness through burlesque classes and performance.

The performance group consists of founder Dominus Von Vexo, Cocoa Kink, Locques La Roux, Lioness, Petite, Mama Mamba and Penny Dreadful.

The array of talent explores different sides of sexuality through dance, striptease, drag, issue based performance, aesthetic and open mic.

Theatre in search for future stars of new West Side Story production Birmingham Hippodrome is looking to unearth hidden young talent in Birmingham for their first ever youth production of ‘West Side Story’ on their main stage in August 2019. Based on ‘Romeo & Juliet,’ West Side Story is a tale of teenage love on the streets of New York.

Open auditions are being held for anyone aged 14-25 with a talent for singing, dancing, acting or performing. Their production is looking for a diverse, eclectic cast with raw talent, so from breakin’

performance and health & wellbeing classes within the first 6 months of promoting them. The success shows no sign of stopping.

Danny added: “We are still within our first year of classes and shows! Next year is going to be a real adventure for everyone

involved, staff, performers, venues, audiences, students… which is truly exciting!

“We aim to continue our dance classes which have recently been rebranded to bring out the optimal empowerment in our students, focusing on technique, musicality, energy and performance.

“House of Allure’s biggest success was our last show An Eve of Burlesque on the 5th October at Eden Bar. A sell out event ending with a standing ovation.

“It was an explosion of fun, glamour and pure fabulousness.

This was close to House of Allure’s heart as this was our first show and to receive the overwhelming response, was more than we could have ever imagined.”

“There is a lack of Burlesque in the Birmingham creative scene in comparison to other areas of the UK such as Manchester and London. So firstly, it was lovely that the art form is supported and wanted here, and was met with such great positivity.

Phillips sold out his debut show ‘A Night of Burlesque’ with other talented performers in September and has already sold over half of their tickets to their ‘Night at the Movies’ show which will take place in March 2019. The VIP tickets were sold out before the first show was over.

When asked about the next show, he added: “We chose movies as our next show, because as part of the House of Allure Presents and An Eve of Burlesque brand, we wanted to explore interesting themes.

“Each of our dancers are incredibly skilled and versatile in the what they can offer, so we like to challenge ourselves and use different themes to explore our art form further.

“The silver screen is notorious for visual brilliance, glamour, action, adventure, politics and we can’t wait to share our love through fascinating acts with our audience. We have a hell of a lot of tricks up our sleeves for this show!

Believe in the power of love as Ghost - The Musical returns

ill Kenwright’s ‘beautiful’ and ‘spectacular’ production of ‘Ghost – The Musical’ returns to the UK this year, following a spectacular international tour in Dubai, Istanbul and Trieste.

The 2019 UK tour, which opened at Wolverhampton Grand Theatre, is the musical celebration of the double Academy Awardwinning movie ‘Ghost’ the hugely successful story, both critically and at the box office, where it was the highest grossing film in the year of its release.

It starred the late Patrick Swayze alongside Demi Moore, Tony Goldwyn and Whoopi Goldberg and was directed by Jerry Zucker.

These monuments, statues and even buildings are constructed in specific locations and have Cosmological, Geometric and symbolic data inter-woven into the fabric of their architecture.

During this brief study we will see that many of the signs and symbols that you encounter day by day really tell a story of the passage of the Earth, the Sun and the Planets through the signs of the Zodiac.

Historic information informs us that Gargoyles were primarily used for water drainage, their hideous appearances developed later.

Triangles reveal 3 phases of the One, spirit, soul and body.

Stain Glass windows reproduce the effects of a Rainbow and the entities that dwell within their colours.

All these Principles of greater understanding were learned at the feet of the Masters in Egypt, let’s not forget that Abraham was their first patriarch to travel there and later on we also find that Jesus went there to study along with Mohammad who fled to the Egyptian/Ethiopian peninsula.

All of the Greek Masters had to study in Egypt, from Plato, Socrates, and Aristotle. Each studied for more than 10 years in Egypt and Pythagoras and Thales more than 20 years, but these facts are hidden to give the impression that the Greeks were the founders of illumination and democracy.

It can only be said that the Black Race were clothed in Glory, Love and knowledge very early on.

The summer and winter solstices have an enormous importance, and once again the church has made literal the movements of the Stars.

At this point we might ask ourselves then why these symbols are prevalent in city centres and sites that mark the equinoxes or solstices, could it be that this is the hidden religion of the establishment.

The Light, which is symbolic for the Sun is a symbol of illumination often portrayed around a figures head.

The Celestial Sphere, Oldbury Road Smethwick, Birmingham

The Celestial Sphere, the fundamental model of the heavens in Greek thought, learned in Egypt, geometrically divided into poles, tropics, equator and ecliptic.

The centre Ball represents the Earth; the thick band represents the Zodiac while the finer bands represent the planets, all in their rotational capacities.

During the process of research I went to Birmingham Central Library, West Bromwich Library and Smethwick Library to try and attain more in depth information about the Celestial Sphere pictured above. Astonishingly there are no records stating who built the monument and when, which is incredible, perhaps it was erected by a group that wants to keep its identity hidden.

The Beacon of Light, West Bromwich, Birmingham

The Public Monument and Sculpture Association gives a description as follows the Beacon of Light; ‘Three vertical uprights painted blue support a large fibreglass cone at the top of the work.

A spiral tube of steel winds its way around the outside of this framework. At two different points along it there are spheres of differing sizes.

The larger one has a LED display appearing as a band around it: This displays the time in red, using a

24hour clock. The smaller one is higher off the ground, highly polished and reflective.

It is further towards the centre of the work, and has several holes bored in its lower surface. The work is illuminated at night and acts as a beacon for motorists, changing colour as it does so.

It also acts as a space age frame work to house a digital clock and a spherical ‘planet’.

It might also be interpreted as a geometrical cone pulling energies from above... I think I’ll leave this one for you to interpret yourselves.

SEAT has secured the prestigious Fleet Manufacturer of the Year award at the inaugural Great British Fleet Event 2019.

Having taken the accolade of Most Improved Fleet Manufacturer just a year previously, SEAT has continued its ascent, this time winning the coveted overall award.

Formerly the Fleet World Honours, the new Great British Fleet Event is bigger and better than ever for 2019.

Under its new title, the ceremony took place in central London where it was announced that SEAT had won the most illustrious award of the night, as well as Best Fleet Supermini for the talented Ibiza hatchback.

The Fleet Manufacturer of the Year award commends excellence in the overall delivery of fleet programmes and strength of vehicle line-up, with SEAT coming out on top.

After achieving record true fleet sales again in 2018, this achievement caps what has been a significant 12-months for the manufacturer.

With a year-on-year growth of 27%, SEAT UK has now been the fastest growing car manufacturer in true fleet for two consecutive years.

The success didn’t stop at the overall award, however. The SEAT Ibiza triumphed over competitors to take home the desirable Best Fleet Supermini award.

Historic 100th WRC Win For Citroën

S

ébastien Ogier and Julien Ingrassia produced a heroic effort in their C3 WRC to win the Rallye MonteCarlo by the narrowest margin in the history of the event.

A winning margin that reflected the intensity of the fight and the stunning performance delivered. This exceptional result saw Citroën Racing claim its hundredth WRC win at the start of the year in which the brand celebrates its centenary.

Tackling the last 13.58 kilometres of this year’s Rallye

Monte-Carlo with a lead of just four tenths of a second certainly calls for an extremely cool head, amplified more so when your concentration has been somewhat disturbed by a throttle issue.

With six world titles to their names, Sébastien Ogier and Julien Ingrassia have long since mastered the art of keeping calm in high pressure situations with adrenalin pumping through their systems and demonstrated this once again with their commanding performance.

Second fastest on the final stage between La Cabanette and the Col de Braus, the Frenchmen sealed their seventh overall win and their sixth in a row in the Principality by just 2.2 seconds, on their first competitive outing in the C3 WRC. The result also means the pair now jointly hold the record for the number of wins at this prestigious rally and confirms how Sébastien and Julien are already at one with their new car.

This outstanding performance is equally Citroën Racing’s

hundredth victory in the World Rally Championship, a historic achievement that reflects the kind of longevity at the highest level that few manufacturers can boast.

This win comes almost twenty years after Citroën Racing’s first win at this level when the Xsara Kit-Car prevailed at the 1999 Rally de Catalunya, driven by the late Philippe Bugalski and JeanPaul Chiaroni, who now works as recce and weather coordinator for the team.

Confused Brits were performing double-takes when they spotted Iron Man busy on his day-off.

The Marvel superhero’s alterego Tony Stark isn’t known for carrying out everyday chores during his downtime.

But he looked at ease in the West Country, where he was photographed driving out of a Hyundai dealership with a brand-new model.

Bemused onlookers watched the comic book legend take a dog for walk, go for a KFC drive-thru and drop off a load of cardboard at a local recycling plant.

But the superhero wasn’t in the UK for the latest adventure - it was a lookalike who had arrived in the city to show off the new Iron Man-inspired Hyundai Kona.

After being unveiled at Comic Con in the USA last year, Hyundai has now confirmed it will bring 300 of the Kona Iron Man SUVs to the UK.

Local Pupils Get Science Inspired At McLaren Birmingham Pupils from a local school were the special VIP guests of retailer McLaren Birmingham in Solihull where they got to find out for themselves how pursuing a science or maths based career helps to create some of the world’s most iconic sportscars and supercars.

Year 7 students from Alderbrook School met engineers and designers from McLaren Automotive to find out about what inspired their own journey to the luxury car company and how they use their skills to help push the boundaries of technology in the automotive sector.

The children also got a rare chance to sit in some of the

marque’s famous models including a McLaren 570S Spider sportscar before having a chance to flex their engineering and coding brains by building and racing their own LEGO cars.

To keep the students on their toes ahead of their LEGO build, McLaren tyre Partner Pirelli also supplied a Batak game to test the students’ reaction times.

The retailer-based event is a further new initiative from the car company to help broaden its extensive STEM and educational outreach to communities across the country.

McLaren Automotive already backs the UK STEM Awards (which has seen previous winners secure permanent roles

at McLaren) and has partnered with the BBC on educational science programming for primary school age groups and above.

to in Somerset. I have been attending Soul Survivor since I was age 15 and i’ve fell in love with it ever since!

Aaliyah brings praise jam to the youth Very true, are there any downfalls of being a young musician and As I have seen you play before, you always seem like your having so much fun. What are you best moments within the industry?

Hi, please tell us about your conference and how did your vision of praise Jam start?

My name is Aaliyah Jay and I am the founder and visionary of Praise Jam UK a youth worship Conference and Emerge Academy a Christian Music School In Birmingham.

Praise Jam was initially birthed out of frustration and desire to see more training for the younger generation who had the passion and desire to nurture their gifting and use it more in a worship setting.

Why do you think it’s important young people pursue their passions/ dreams?

I think it is so important for young people to pursue their dreams because I believe God gives us those dreams, not for ourselves, but to be a blessing to others and help someone else.

We just do not know who is waiting for us to make the first step in order for them to receive their breakthrough and their blessings.

One of the downfalls I found as a young musician is that very few people take you seriously and that is something that I am really trying to change.

If your parents aren’t already in the game then it’s often hard for you to get a look in. On the other hand, being able to express myself in a way that words couldn’t even begin to communicate has to be one of the greatest things about this ministry.

I have had the opportunity to play in various different countries and it’s been amazing to see how music transcends all Language barriers and human emotion.

I’ve played in bands with people who didn’t speak a word of English but through music, we could all understand each other very well.

I visited Soul survivor practically every summer. I first gave my life to Christ at age 15 at Soul Survivor, and I met so many young teenagers every summer.

There are so much things to do, from sports, open mics, competitions.

I love it, and being a strong

lover of music I just love being there. Every morning and evening we meet in a massive tent.

This is where the word is shared and we worship and dance, it’s amazing. I feel like if you’ve never been camping before then it’s a great place to start.

My first camping experience was at Soul survivor and in the night it’s so freezing, but during the day it’s boiling!

It’s the perfect water fight weather, you can attend with anyone, friends, family or your church.

My favourite part has to be, the simply being able to bond with your loved ones. I love meeting new people, so seeing different people, from all around the world is very enjoyable. It definitely makes the experience.

igned by Premier League side Cardiff City during the January transfer window, the Argentinian striker began his professional career with French club Bordeaux, in 2012, before joining fellow Ligue 1 side Nantes in 2015.

He made over 100 appearances and was the club's top goalscorer for three consecutive seasons before signing for the Welsh club, for a club record fee of £15 million.

Flying from Nantes to Cardiff the plane he was in was reported missing over the Channel Islands.

After an extensive search his plane was never found before a private search was launched 4 days later. He was 28.

orn in east London, he grew up in the Ogmore valley, in Wales. Educated at Ogmore Grammar School, he also working as a miner - before National Service with the Army.

Heavily involved in amateur dramatics, he was later cast in a TV series called Probation Officer then Z Cars and Callan.

In 1973, he was cast in It Ain't Half Hot Mum, where he played Battery Sergeant Major Williams a no-nonsense, platoon leader with a love-hate relationship with the theatrical troupe. An off-shoot was him topping the pop charts with sitcom partner Don Estelle in 1975.

He then played antique dealer Oliver Smallbridge in ITV sitcom Never The Twain. Back in Wales he starred in BBC productions and was also the voice of Sergeant Major Zero in 1980s sci-fi series Terrahawks. He was 88.

She then became a presenter for

the Saturday morning children's TV programme ‘The 8:15 from Manchester,’ where she met her husband, Ian Hindle.

Her death, from ovarian cancer, prompted a huge outpouring of tributes and reaction.

He had been admitted to hospital, over Christmas, due to cancer, where he passed away.

Representing South Africa 58 times, he was 49.

ebi Martini a.k.a. E.Z. Wider, a.k.a. Connie Champagne, or Debbi Dip, she was bassist and vocalist of Long Beach, California, all-girl punk band Red Aunts formed in 1991.

The band broke up in 1998 and then re-formed years later - played on and off throughout the past few

years.

Their first two albums - in 1993 and ’94 - were released on the indie label Sympathy for the Record Industry. Their final three albums were all released by Epitaph.

In 2014, a greatest hits compilation; ‘Come Up For a Closer Look’ was released on In the Red. The band reunited in 2016 and played a string of shows last year.

Her death was referring to - on social media – as ‘sudden and unexpected.’

He died after battling cancer, age 54.

British Sikhs to get ethnicity status in 2021 census

T

he UK Statistics Authority has said that Britain’s Sikh community will be listed in the 2021 census as an ethnic race and not just a religion, following a major step that will give the community fairer access to all public services in the country.

It comes after over 100 British MPs, including Indianorigin lawmakers, asked the authority to include ‘Sikh’ as a separate ethnic box for the 2021 census; which will list it as a distinct ethnicity, rather than only as a religion.

In the 2011 census, many Sikhs refused to tick any of

the choices in the question on ethnicity, ¬rejecting options such as ‘¬Indian’ in ¬order to write ‘Sikh’ in the ‘any other ethnic group’ space.

Under the UK’s Race Relations Act 1976 Sikhs are a legally recognised ethnic group and campaigners for the change believe this gives them a right to be able to identify themselves separately from current census options, such as Indian or British Indian.

In preparation for the 2021 census, which is expected to be conducted largely online, the Office for National Statistics ran a test version of the census in 2017 with “Sikh” included as an option under ethnicity in areas with large Sikh

populations.

It found that almost a quarter of those who specified Sikhism as their religion also chose Sikh as their ethnicity.

Labour MP Preet Kaur Gill, Chair of the All Party Parliamentary Group for British Sikhs, said: "MPs, with the support of gurudwaras, Sikh organisations and the community, started a yearlong nationwide campaign to put this right and a Sikh ethnic tick box to be added when the Census Order 2019 is presented in the House of Commons."

The ONS is set to include Sikhism as an ethnicity on the 2021 form.

In the presence of His Excellency Seth George Ramocan, CD, High Commissioner for Jamaica, the Honourable Attorney General of Jamaica, Marlene Malahoo Forte, QC, JP, MP, and Deputy High Commissioner for Jamaica Mrs Angela Rose Howell, guests were treated not only to an evening of delights for the eyes, ears and tastebuds, but to the wonderful story of the creation of the Marshall & Brown brand.

Developed by Dr Carlton Brown, a 1st generation BritishJamaican with a love of Caribbean food and his wife Marvely, the inspiration for this premium range of authentic Jamaican foods and beverages came from his ninety-five year old mother and late mother in law, who were both excellent cooks.

After hearing from Dr Brown, and Laurence Jones, the European Regional Manager for JAMPRO, as well as H.E. George Ramocan and an impromtu message from the Attorney General, the attendees were treated to a range of beautiful savoury and dessert canapes created using Marshall & Brown products, including coconut and chilli prawns, ackee and saltfish on sweet potato cakes, and a selection of their amazing rum cakes and chocolates.

It also helps you to save money, stay healthy and keep your teeth.

The hard truth about soft drinks: * You can save £438 a year if you stopped drinking one bottle of soft drink, per day for a year * Drinking just one 330ml can of fizzy drink a day could add up to more than a stone in weight gain per year * Nearly four out of five (79%) of fizzy drinks contain six or more teaspoons of sugar per 330 ml can * Tooth decay is the leading cause for hospitalisation each year due to tooth decay Going fizz free is a great way for children to reduce their sugar intake by simply cutting out fizzy drinks.

10-mile Rugby Ramble to score vital funding for local hospice Big-hearted rugby fans are being challenged to complete a 10-mile sponsored walk, to help raise vital funds for Birmingham St Mary’s Hospice.

The charity’s ‘Rugby Ramble’ will see hundreds of participants walk 10 miles from the Hospice to Birmingham Moseley Rugby Club, where they will be able to watch the Six Nations England/Wales match with local players.

Rugby enthusiasts, avid walkers and even dogs are

welcome to take on the trek, which is a scenic walk through south Birmingham’s parks and canals.

It takes place on Saturday February 23 and ramblers will be treated to a free refreshing pint and heart-warming pie ‘n’ chips once they arrive at the rugby club.

Last year, 248 walkers took on the sold-out ‘Rugby Ramble,’ raising over £25,000 for the hospice.

All funds raised will go towards Birmingham St Mary’s, which provides care

and support to local people and their loved ones who are living with life-limiting illness.

Laura Nash, Events Manager at Birmingham St Mary’s Hospice, said: “Whether you’re cheering on England, supporting Wales or just coming along for a walk and a pie, ‘Rugby Ramble’ is a popular event that everyone can get involved in.

It’s a really fun way to experience the excitement of this highly-anticipated Six Nations match, whilst raising

It costs £8 million a year to run the crucial services, over 60 per cent of which must come from generous voluntary donations.

Looking Forward

I

n my role as Cabinet Member for Adult Social Care and Health, It has been an interesting start to the year. Brexit continues to focus our Government’s mind – the uncertainty continues continues.

This has led to the discussions and focus on issues that affect us all such as health and social care, education, policing and community safety without the level of focus needed.

However, early in the new year on 7 January the NHS long term plan was published. The plan sets out the priorities for the health service over the next 10 years including a shift towards primary and community care and improving health inequalities and an increase of 3.4% a year over the next 5 years.

In funding times this equates to £20.5 billion a year to ensure the financial sustainability of our NHS services.

Many of the elements were interesting and in particular I welcomed the emphasis on prevention and inequalities with a focus on children and young people and ageing well and a shift towards primary care and community services.

It is important that we shift to a model of social care and health that we all receive timely care, treatment and support close to home as possible with the focus on prevention. It is also with prevention and early intervention that we can reduce the onset of serious illnesses early.

When Public Health moved to Local Authorities the shift was welcomes as it gave local authorities the opportunity to re-commission services driving through much needed improvements.

Unfortunately Public Health funding has been scaled back and the Government has announced further cuts.

Which makes this long term plan further more undermined as services and interventions vital for improving population health are not being implemented, or are being cut back, which risks the future sustainability of the NHS and social care.

There are some renewed focuses which are welcomed including measures to support children’s health and in particular mental health.

Something that those of you who know me will know that I am particular passionate about. However, the role of local government plays in delivering the Governments Healthy Child Programme and influencing children and young people is overlooked.

The focus on workforce seems to focus solely on NHS workers which we all value and recognise but there is no reference to the critical frontline services delivered through public health, social work and enablement staff. We await to see what happens with the spending review.

The plan also seems to suggest that the NHS rather that local authorities will have a stronger role in commissioning sexual health services, health visitors, and school nurses.

It has been well documented that the greatest impacts on health

Local government, while often limited itself in its influence, can certainly impact more on these factors than the NHS. Since the transfer of public health responsibilities back to local government in 2012, many in the public health community have responded positively to the opportunity to influence population health outside the rigid structures of the NHS. Commissioning responsibilities for sexual health services for example have undergone major changes in recent years. These changes bring both opportunities and challenges.

There has been the opportunity to build upon the successes of recent years and take a fresh look at problems where we have made less progress. The same can be said for health visiting: outcomes have held up while funding has reduced.

Redesign in many areas has focused on integration – integration with other services, such as criminal justice, adult services, children and young people; and integration across the wider health economy.

Local authorities have also taken some decisions that the NHS could not or would not make.

There are many areas as a local authority we have focused on other recent years and continues to including: alcohol and substance misuse; obesity and nutrition; health inequalities; health checks; rough sleeping, air pollution, falls prevention and so on – all with year on year cuts.

I am as I have set out in previous articles in support of a more transparent and seamless service with the focus on place and services being provided to as close to home as possible with local people and communities involved in how these are shaped and delivered – we have to look at co-production to ensure our services are delivered which are easier for us to access.

I have responded to the NHS long term plan through the Local Government Association and will urge others to have send through their views the plans can be found here www.longtermplan.nhs.uk. In the coming months I will ensure I keep you informed about what the government is saying relating to the future direction of Social care and some of the exciting work I am involved with relating to children’s nutrition and obesity.

n the years before our children’s rights took centre stage, chastisement was erroneously believed to set right any errant boy’s sail.

Yet for Jimi Shabir, charity host and award-winning entrepreneur, all it took (from a “watch guard” Uncle ) was a disappointed, sideways look, followed by a contemplative gape, all of which, he says, stopped him in his tracks and, later, pressed him towards business success.

“I don’t even remember what I had gotten up to that day,” laughs Jimi, who is charity fundraising for Birmingham's St Mary’s Hospice, “but boys will be boys.

“What I know is that, back then, without that scalding look of disapproval, I wouldn’t be who I am today, probably wouldn’t do the community work I so much

enjoy.”

And he does it all in memory of one man, whom he believes, looked at the pattern of choices gifted an unruly boy being brought up in Balsall Heath and chose to kick against the grain.

“My uncle worked in banking, but his slow move from nothing, to having something, was I think a miracle.

“He had children of his own but luckily, luckily, he saw something in me and maybe he wanted to save himself all over again.”

A year ago, after a year-long battle with pancreatic cancer, Muneer Aziz passed away with the care of Birmingham’s St Mary’s Hospice.

But the closing of that door opened up a new window for Jimi Shabir. “I must admit, I never gave much thought about the work that hospices do...well you don’t, do you?

“It’s like death...you know it’s there, but you don’t think too much about it…and that’s the thing...I found out that it’s not about death, but the celebration of life…of giving the very best of life at the end of life.”

Recently, Shabir’s company, Bootcamp Media, which has already won a Best Web Design and Marketing agency award, hosted an event that raised £4150 for Birmingham’s St Mary’s Hospice.

“For a long time, I never had a deep understanding of why people raised money for charity - aside from the obvious. I know now there is almost always a very personal story behind this, very personal, but it’s also public thing too.” “ I don’t want to come over all stupidly sentimental,” he adds, “but I want to shout out to all parents out there who dream for the kids and put action to their vision. I was there when my uncle died and he gave me a look and smile. I knew what he meant and that’s why I do what I do.”

Scientists win grant to test for aggressive prostate cancer Researchers from the University of Birmingham have received a grant worth over £275,000 from leading men’s health charity, Prostate Cancer UK to help develop a new test to accurately show how aggressive someone’s prostate cancer is, in order to help doctors identify the best treatment for each individual man.

The grants have been awarded as part of the charity’s £3 million Research Innovation Awards scheme following a competitive process and detailed assessment from international experts.

The scheme encourages researchers across the UK to develop forward thinking, ambitious research proposals which challenge the status quo to help fight prostate cancer.

Current tests can’t tell the difference between an aggressive prostate cancer which will spread quickly and needs immediate treatment, and one which may never grow enough to cause any harm.

The study, led by Professor Paula Mendes, will use nanoparticles to test for specific proteins which indicate that the cancer is aggressive.

Professor Mendes said: “Prostate specific antigen, or PSA, is produced naturally by the prostate. A raised level in the blood can indicate a problem, but this doesn’t always mean cancer.

“This research uses coloured nanoparticles which bind to sugars attached to PSA proteins to see if they can help us tell whether there is actually cancer, and if so, how aggressive it’s likely to be.”

Time to get on your bike, Britain Despite the government pouring £1.2 billion into cycling, new research has revealed that it is still only a slim few who are cycling to work, with many citing nervousness about cycling in traffic as the reason.

A survey of more than 7,600 UK adults published by Decathlon in the Decathlon Activity Index 2018, shows that only 7% of the nation is commuting to work with a bike.

he iconic image of Cyrille Regis running towards the crowd, arms aloft has been captured on the side of a West Midlands Metro tram which was named in tribute of the West Bromwich Albion legend and his contribution to the game both on and off the pitch.

Organised by Transport for West Midlands (TfWM), part of the West Midlands Combined Authority (WMCA) and launched from its regional depot, in Wednesbury, in the West Midlands, the newly designed image on the side of the

tram emerged from its shed in the presence of Regis’ widow, Julia, son Robert - with his son Riley, who flew in especially from their home in Los Angeles - daughter Michelle, brother, Dave, other family members. They were joined

by Deputy Mayor of the West Midlands Councilor Bob Sleigh and Councilor Joy Edis, Mayor of Sandwell, plus former Albion teammates, friends and local dignitaries, revealing the design in its full glory in what, for that short period of time, bright sunshine.

Highlighting his forevereffervescent, always low-key

approach to his legendary status in the game, Julia, said: “I believe Cyrille would have been quite surprised to have a tram named after him but equally I think he would have felt humbled and honoured especially as the Cyrille Regis tram will be carrying thousands of fans of his beloved West Bromwich Albion to the Hawthorns for many years to come.

As a family we are saddened that he is not here with us to enjoy this wonderful tribute, but proud to accept it on his behalf.”

Alongside teammates Dr Brendon Batson – he received an honorary degree from the University of Warwick for his services to football - and the late Laurie Cunningham, they were famously dubbed ‘The Three Degrees,’ by the then manager Ron Atkinson, and were considered pioneers for Black footballers, helping to break down barriers in the face of often blatant racism.

Dr Batson added:

“Cyrille, bless him. If he’s looking down he will be quietly pleased at this and you can bet this tram will be the fastest in the fleet over the first 60metres.

The fans getting on this tram will en1joy their journey and he will be remembered fondly not just as a fantastic goal scorer but as a great character off the field too.”

Cllr Sleigh said: “We can see the terrific legacy that Cyrille, Brendon and Laurie have left us in the exceptionally talented Black players that grace the modern game.

Cyrille also holds a special place in the hearts of thousands of football fans right across the West Midlands, not just Baggies fans but

also Coventry, Wolves and Villa fans.

It’s for these reasons we wanted to mark our appreciation in the best way we could – by naming a tram after him.”

Only two other trams in the 21-strong West Midlands Metro fleet have been named by TfWM. Birmingham rock star Ozzy Osbourne had a tram named in his honour in 2016, whilst in 2015 the Queen opened the Birmingham city centre extension by naming a tram after Cllr Angus Adams the late chairman of the region’s transport authority who had been instrumental in getting the project built.

Former First Lady’s memoirs to be on US school curriculum

ormer First Lady Michelle Obama’s book ‘Becoming,’ which sold over 1.4 million copies in its first week of release, has inspired many women all over the world.

Having been inspired by the book herself, Lauren Christine Mims, a former assistant director of the White House Initiative on Educational Excellence for African Americans, chose the book to be a curriculum for girls to enhance their learning and development.

Mims, who will soon earn her Ph.D. of Educational Psychology from the University of Virginia, is just one of the many who have been captivated by Obama’s bestselling memoir.

“Reading Becoming was like sitting on the couch with your best friend and having one of those soulful conversations about life,” Mims said.

“Reading about how Michelle

Obama felt unchallenged in elementary school, teased for the way she spoke, and noticed a difference in how she was perceived during adolescence was affirming.”

Upon reading it, she (Mims) realized the impact the book could be able to give on girls who were striving to find their place in the challenging world.

Along with her doctoral research about young, Black girls in school, she decided to turn book into a curriculum to further all girls’ learning and development.

“I disrupt the traditional practice of talking about girls - especially Black girls - in pejorative ways and centre them and their unique experiences to study how we can support them.

“For example, my research highlights what ‘Black Girl Magic’ means to Black girls; the role teachers play in supporting or stopping the success of Black girls; and more about what they

are learning and how it makes them feel,” she said.

The curriculum would include reading ‘Becoming,’ watching films with Black girls as the lead role, and participating in “important conversations, like about what it means to feel like your presence is a threat or that you do not belong. We will discuss Maddie Whitsett and McKenzie Nicole Adams; two 9-year old Black girls who died by suicide after being subjected to bullying.

Michelle Obama herself said; “Becoming isn’t about arriving somewhere or achieving a certain aim,” yet there is so much pressure in college to define your identity and pick a career path. It can take a toll on you.

“Know that you are brilliant and never underestimate the importance you can have because history has shown us that courage can be contagious and hope can take on a life of its own.”

Ghana to welcome back people of African origin Targeting to attract people of the African origin to visit their continent of origin, Ghana President Nana Akufo-Addo has designated the year 2019 as the “Year of Return” to commemorate the resilience of Africans forced into slavery and to encourage their descendants to come home.

“We know of the extraordinary achievements and contributions Africans in the Diaspora made to the lives of the Americans, and it is important that this symbolic year, 400 years later, we commemorate their existence and their sacrifices,” President Nana said earlier in September last year.

His timing was based on the first recorded landing of a ship carrying Africans in Virginia, US, in August 1619 according to historians.

The Ghanaian president proclaimed 2019 as the “Year of Return” for all Diaspora descendants of Africans who were captured and transported into the Americas as slaves in the 17th and 18th centuries.

Titled, “Year of Return, Ghana 2019”, the proclamation was read in September last year at a ceremony held at the United States National Press Club in Washington DC to formally launch a program of activities marking the 400th anniversary of the arrival of the first enslaved Africans to English North America in 1619.

The Year of Return seeks to make Ghana the focus for millions of African descendants reacting to their marginalization by tracing their ancestry and identity. By this, Ghana becomes the beacon for African people living on the continent and the Diaspora.

The Proclamation recognizes Ghana’s unique position as the location for 75 percent of the slave dungeons built on the west coast of Africa and the current President’s policy making it a national priority to extend a hand of welcome back home to Africans in the Diaspora.

China has enacted a new law designed to protect and conserve the environment surrounding the Mount Qomolangma (Mount Everest) reserve.

Mount Everest, also called Mt. Qomolangma, is the world’s highest mountain.

Mount Everest is the dominant peak of Himalayas, the northern brae in Tingri County of Tibet and the southern in the Nepal.

Founded in 1988, Mount Qomolangma National Nature Reserve in Tibet Autonomous Region covers a 33,800-sqkm area that encompasses the world’s most vulnerable ecosystems.

The reserve is regulated by a new law starting from the latter half of the last year, said Kelsang, deputy director of the reserve administration.

According to the articles of the regulation, it prohibits tree-cutting, herding, hunting, collecting and sabotaging of turfs in the reserve. Violators are subject to criminal punishment.

The legislation also disciplines mountain-climbing, tourism, scientific exploration, engineering projects and ranger patrol.

Turkish Airlines hits 10-Year Birmingham Airport Milestone

ward winning airline, Turkish Airlines celebrates 10 years of flying from Birmingham Airport. To mark the momentous occasion, employees from Turkish Airlines and Birmingham Airport, as well as passengers, gathered on the day of the very first ever flight from the Airport 10 years ago.

Passengers due to board the 11:05 flight to the airline’s hub of Istanbul were invited to join the festivities, celebrating the airlines growth over the past decade.

In 2008, Turkish Airlines joined Birmingham Airport operating five services per week.

In 2012, this grew to a daily

service, shortly followed by flights operating up to 12 times a week. From March this year, the airline will increase its services to twice daily.

Expert on tourism security welcomed in Jamaica

Wizz Air announces direct service from Brum Wizz Air recently relaunched a direct route to Romania’s second largest city, Cluj-Napoca from Birmingham Airport. To mark the occasion, an inaugural ceremony was held at the Airport where passengers and employees gathered to celebrate.

The 166 passengers departing on the 07:40 flight were greeted with a celebration for the new route which operates twice weekly on a Wednesday and Sunday.

The Spice of the Caribbean achieves historic milestone

ure Grenada, the Spice of the Caribbean achieved a historic milestone in 2018 welcoming more than half a million visitors to the destination’s shores.

Spread across key niche markets, the combined cruise, yachting and stay over arrivals for 2018 was 528,077 representing a 12.90% increase over 2017.

A strong performance was recorded in stay over arrivals with an increase of 9.97%, moving from 146,375 to 160,970 visitors with special mention given to the bumper Christmas season in which a growth of 17% was recorded.

Canada recorded the highest growth rate in 2018 with a

19.05% increase (14,58617,364), followed by the USA at 12.38% (67,252-75,577) and the Caribbean at 6.87% (27,127-28,990).

Significant growth was also recorded in non-traditional markets that included Latin America at 13.28% (1,2651,433) and the category representing all other parts of the world at 18.27% (2,934-3, 470).

The USA maintains the top spot in market share for arrivals to the destination at 46.93% followed by the United Kingdom.

The yachting sector recorded double-digit growth of 10.82%, with visitor arrivals moving from 21,911 to 24,281, a direct result of 428 more

yacht calls. As it relates to cruise arrivals, the sector grew by 14.49% (299,449-342,826) due to larger cruise ship calls.

Speaking about Grenada, Carriacou and Petite Martinique’s performance, Grenada Tourism Authority’s (GTA) Chief Executive Officer Patricia Maher said; “We are delighted to surpass the historic 500,000 mark.

“It is a result of our hard work in lobbying airlines for more flights and the engagement of top cruise brand executives for more ship calls. I would like to thank our stakeholders for their support in ensuring our visitors continue to have wonderful experiences in the destination.”

The Tourism Working Group, which was recently established by Minister Bartlett to conduct a comprehensive review of issues in the sector, and is headed by PriceWaterhouseCoopers Senior Partner, Wilfred Baghaloo, was also part of the process.

Getting on the property ladder prioritised above having children B ucket list favourites including buying a house, travelling and getting married are now more of a priority to British couples than starting a family, a new study has found.

In a survey of 1,003 British adults, carried out by etailer Furniture123.co.uk, 67% said that getting onto the property ladder was their number one priority for adult life and that they wanted a place to call their own before planning to start a family.

63% or respondents said they wanted to see more of the world before committing to children.

53% of respondents said that landing their dream job was more of a priority than starting a family, as 1 in 3 believe it would be difficult to juggle career progression with the responsibilities of parenthood.

41% said they wouldn’t plan to settle down to have children until they had tied the knot with their partner.

Owning a pet also made the top five list of priorities - 29% claimed they wanted to buy a pet before having children and 95% of these said that caring for a pet was great practice for looking after a child.

Community projects secure grants from housebuilder Two community projects that will benefit children in Birmingham have received a helping hand from leading housebuilder Persimmon Homes.

Balsall Health Children Action Team Support and The Springfield Project have received grants of £1,000 and £500 respectively, as part of Persimmon’s Community Champions, a national matchfunding scheme that supports groups and charities working to improve the quality of life or environment across the region.

Nazreen Bi from Balsall Heath CATS said: “Our parentled organisation is set up to run play, leisure, sports, arts and recreational activities for

disabled children and their family to promote social inclusion through play, build upon diversity and appreciate different potentials.

Social house building plummets New analysis carried out by Shelter shows that the delivery of social homes in the West Midlands has plummeted since the start of the decade from 3,214 homes in 2009-10 to 1,794 in 2017-18 – a dramatic fall of 44%.

Despite this, the need for social housing in the area is high with almost 100,000 households on the waiting list for social housing.

This comes as Shelter’s social housing commission launches a landmark report calling for an ambitious 3.1 million new homes across the country, extending the offer of social housing to many more people.

After the Grenfell Tower tragedy, the charity brought together 16 independent commissioners with diverse backgrounds from across the political spectrum to examine the housing crisis in England as it exists today.

Among others they include, Ed Miliband MP, Baroness Sayeeda Warsi, Baroness Doreen Lawrence, TV architect George Clarke, Lord Jim O’Neill and Grenfell survivor Ed Daffarn.

Having spent a year listening to the views of hundreds of social tenants, 31,000 members of the public and a range of housing experts, the commissioners put forward a bold vision for social housing, and who should have the opportunity to live in it.

Baroness Warsi said: “Social mobility has been decimated by decades of political failure to address our worsening housing crisis. Half of young people cannot buy, and thousands face the horror of homelessness. Our vision for social housing presents a vital political opportunity to reverse this decay.”

10k run to celebrate 10 years of Dreams Honeymoon Dreams is celebrating its 10th birthday and this year they are showcasing a series of events and celebrations to mark 10 years of creating tailormade honeymoons for newlyweds in the UK. The very first announcement of the year is the company’s participation in the Great Birmingham 10k run on May 26.

In celebration of 10 years, the company is partnering with two local organisations, with Birmingham Airport helping to sponsor the event and money being raised for Birmingham Children’s Hospital Charity.

The company has already signed up 25 runners participating on behalf of Honeymoon Dreams, which is made up of staff as well as friends and also Airport staff.

Leading up to the 10k run, Honeymoon Dreams will be promoting efforts in numerous ways to raise as much money as possible for the charity on the run up to the big day.

Honeymoon Dreams director, Lakh Hayer, who is taking part in the event said: “We want to create a real buzz about our 10 year anniversary and as we are Birmingham-based we want to give something back to the community and involve all the team at Honeymoon Dreams too.”

Birmingham 2022 Commonwealth Games Board Completed With Four Appointments T he latest meeting of the Birmingham 2022 Commonwealth Games Organising Committee board sees four new members were welcomed by Chair of the Board, John Crabtree, including; Non-Executive Directors, Ellie Simmonds OBE, Lyndsey Jackson and Nick Timothy appointed by Jeremy Wright, Secretary of State for Digital, Culture, Media and Sport. Derrick Anderson CBE has been confirmed as the West Midlands Combined Authority’s nominee.

With these four new members joining the existing ten, who were all appointed in 2018, the board for the Birmingham 2022 Commonwealth Games is now complete.

Chair, John Crabtree, who took up his role in July last year, said: “With the board now finalised I am looking forward to truly ramping up our reach

and activity, making the most of the board’s mix of experts from the worlds of sport, culture and business, as well as those who truly know and understand the city and the region.

“What unites us all is that we are passionate about this once-in-alifetime event and we’re focused on working together to deliver the best possible Games.”

Ellie, originally from Walsall in the West Midlands, is a five-time Paralympic and fourteen-time world champion. She said: "It’s a genuine privilege to have been asked to join the board for the 2022 Commonwealth Games in Birmingham.

“Having been fortunate enough to have taken part in three Paralympic Games to date, and numerous other multi and single sport events, I intend to utilise all the experience and knowledge I’ve picked up over the course of the last decade and hopefully contribute to making Birmingham the

best Commonwealth Games to date.

Having been brought up in the West Midlands and having spent much of my life in Birmingham, it truly is an honour to be part of such an esteemed group of people and I fully intend to do everything in my power to make this a special, wholly inclusive and utterly memorable event for everyone not just in Birmingham but the whole of Great Britain."

The Board, whose 14 members will serve until June 2023, represent the key partners for the Games; Birmingham City Council, the West Midlands Combined Authority, the UK Government, Commonwealth Games Federation and Commonwealth Games England.

The Birmingham 2022 Commonwealth Games will be held from July 27 until August 7, 2022 featuring competition in 17 sports over 11 days in venues across Birmingham, the West Midlands and beyond.

Warwickshire County Cricket Club has secured a new commercial partnership with Solihull-based cricket coaching specialists Complete Cricket.

Over three-years that provides branding on the back of Warwickshire’s Specsavers County Championship shirt, the new deal is being used by Complete Cricket to further develop its cricket coaching programmes across the Midlands, which support the development of young cricketers that have ambitions to reach the professional game as well as those that just want to play for fun.
