But not just that as they gathered to celebrate the contribution the university lecturer has made in his local, and wider, community at large.

Different but Equal points a new direction for us all

D

ifferent but Equal (DBE) is a new membership organisation with a new approach to supporting people from discriminated groups in the modern workplace.

At a time when trade unions have all but disappeared from the private, voluntary and community sectors, when temporary contracts, part time hours, redundancy are more prevalent among people from discriminated groups and they are similarly the subject to more complaints and disciplinary etc; DBE is the mutually supportive organisation which can hold it together for us all.

Founded upon that strong central notion of equality, believing profoundly that we all are 'different but equal' this is a new community interest community with a big idea to shake our world.

Legislation, some unions and the Employment Tribunal Service are

failing to adequately protect workers from racism and all other forms of discrimination in the workplace.

What will DBE do? Different but Equal quite simply sets out to be there for you whatever you need to make your way in the employment world with business advice, professional indemnity insurance, mentoring, a trade union arm (EQUALITY) to stand up boldly for our rights at work and be a powerful voice to challenge racism and all other forms of discrimination whenever they occur at work.

University celebrates 50th anniversary with Warwick Music Festival

A

s part of its 50th anniversary celebrations, the University of Warwick is hosting The Warwick Music Festival at Warwick Arts Centre from Thursday 21 – Saturday 23 May 2015, featuring some of the world’s best musicians, including the Royal Philharmonic Orchestra, Scottish electro-pop group Django Django and legendary singer songwriter Joan Armatrading.

The Warwick Music Festival represents the cultural centrepiece of the University's 50th anniversary celebrations and will take place over three nights, with a programme reflect-

ing the diversity of the University’s local community, offering classical music, contemporary independent music and stunningly beautiful songwriting.

As an anniversary event, each evening features a programme that celebrates the past whilst also looking to the future.

The Royal Philharmonic Orchestra will play lauded and familiar American classical works from George Gershwin, Aaron Copland and Leonard Bernstein on Thursday 21 May, and will also be joined onstage by the student musicians of the University of Warwick Symphony Orchestra.

The programme will also be

complemented by Warwick music ensembles playing works from the American Songbook and the Warwick Global Songbook.

Django Django’s gig on Friday 22 May is part of their brand new album launch, following the critical success of their self-titled debut, which was nominated for a Mercury Music Prize in 2012.

Whilst Joan Armatrading’s show on Saturday 23 May is part of her last major tour, it is also her first solo outing.

As she celebrates four decades of performing worldwide with classic tracks such as Love and Affection and Me, Myself I, she will be supported by upcoming

performers Lucy Anne Sale and Garfield Mayor.

As well as a chance to experience brilliant headliners on stage, there will also be street food vendors, welcoming bars and foyers full of sights, sounds and surprises, creating a real festival atmosphere in the venue.

olice and Crime Commissioner David Jamieson has launched the West Midlands Victims Commission, the first of its kind in the country and unique to the West Midlands. The Victims Commission aims to improve the way services are provided for victims of crime.

The new inclusive and consultative approach to commissioning is victim-led and aims to place victims at the heart of the process. The new Victim Service will provide support and information to all victims and will make sure specialist help is provided when needed.

These services will help victims to cope and recover from the impacts of crime.

Victim Support will provide the initial first contact, support

and information to victims, including those affected by business crime, anti-social behaviour and serious road traffic collisions, areas where victims are currently not provided support. They will make an assessment and refer victims to specialist providers where needed.

Police and Crime Commissioner David Jamieson said: “After Baroness Newlove’s important report yesterday it is timely that in the West Midlands we are today launching our Victims Commission.

This shows that we are leading the way on victims’ services. No other PCC has setup a commission expressly to do this job like we have in the West Midlands.

I want there to be as few victims of crime as possible, but when crimes do take place

and victims are harmed, making sure that they get the best possible support is the priority.

That is why we have brought together experts from across different areas and sectors to inform and recommend services to myself.

Standing up for victims across an area as large and diverse as the West Midlands is a difficult task. We will be clear about the outcomes we expect for victims and ensure that we get the most from the resources available” Deputy Police and Crime Commissioner Yvonne Mosquito said: “Becoming a victim of crime can have a life changing effect. That is why we need to make sure that victims get the very best support possible.

“A story of friendship, love, betrayal and loss. A look at how the love of one man by two women has taken them in different directions in their lives, leading them both to loss but in very different ways.”

2013 was successful and although there had been a reported decrease in violent crime in 2014, it still has not slowed down the demand of blood.

“Violence and non-intentional injuries continue to put a heavy burden on the health system. According to the Jamaica healthy lifestyle survey, motor vehicle accidents were the most frequently reported cause of injury in the last five years. The shortage of blood in the health sector has a direct impact on medical and surgical care.”

he next United Kingdom general elections is to be held on 7th May 2015 to elect the 56th Parliament of the United Kingdom. In UK General Elections, voting takes place in all parliamentary constituencies of the United Kingdom to elect members of parliament (MPs) to seats in the House of Commons, the low house of the parliament.

UK longest single term prime minister was sir Robert Walpole lasting 20 years and 314 days from 4 April 1721 until 11 February 1742 and the shortest prime minister ever period was on two days, a record held by the Earl of bath from 10 February to 12 February 1746.

This is to be 55 general election in the United kingdom since 1801 in Great Britain and Ireland.

The conservative party initially planned the number of parliamentary seats to be reduced from 650 to 600, through the sixth periodical review of Westminster constituencies under the parliamentary voting system and constituencies Act 201..

There are additional elections scheduled to take place in Scotland, Wales, Northern Ireland from any local by election on the 7th may 2015.

In 2010 the labour party and the liberal democrats pledged to introduce fixed-term elections as part of the Conservative-Liberal Democrats -Coalition Agreement.

David Cameron agreed to support this with the date of the next general election being 7 may 2015.

The media carried the debates about whether the liberal democrats would continue in coalition with conservatives or enter a new liberal pact but some commentator i spoke to suggest there could be well result, however, whereby the liberal democrats cannot from a two-party coalition with a majority with either labour or conservatives and that the liberal democrats may prefer not to be in a coalition anyone.

The most right wing coalition of three parties is seen as being the conservatives, the UK independence party and the democratic unionist party, although a conservative ministers Rob Wilson suggested that a second election would be more likely than a three party coalition. The country is moving to six political party system with the Liberal Democrats, Scottish Natal party (SNP),UK independent party (UKIP),and Greens, political Analysts speculates that Conservatives, labour and liberal democrats appears to be breaking down with the rise of UKIP. The Scottish Green party and Green Party in Northern Ireland, the green party of England and Wales won their first MP at 2010 general election and were seventh overall in votes. They have been rising polls since last 2014 challenging the liberal democrats for fourth.

But conservatives believes there is a role for private and voluntary providers. Many political analysts told me that, conservatives will lose seats of prime minister because government departments have spent £60million on business class flights, £26million on taxis and £13million on first class rail travel. In 2011 George Osborne barred civil servants from using first class rail travel unless there were exceptional circumstances.

David Cameron subsequently said that all ministers and civil servants should take economy class

flights in an attempt to enhance his Green credentials.

However, despite the bans several government departments are still spending tens of millions of pounds on luxury travel.

The Ministry of Defence has spent £34million, the Foreign Office £23million and the Ministry of Justice £20million.The overall bill has fallen from £28million in 2010-11 to £22million in 2013-14, but in some cases has actually increased.

The first class bill for the Department for Business, Innovation and Skills has risen from £1.1million to £1.7million since 2010, while the Ministry of Defence's spending on business class air travel bill has risen from £7.4million to £8million.

The Department for International Development has seen its taxi bill rise from £190,00 to £260,000, while the Department for energy and Climate Chance from £50,000 to £87,000 and the Foreign and Commonwealth Office from £318,689 to £402,856.

The overall bill for business class flights has risen from £14million to £15.2million over the past four years.

A government source said: "Taxis are used in some cases to transport disabled staff, and the spend has come down significantly since 2010. In general short haul flights are normally economy unless there is no availability at the last minute.

"This is an organisation of 440,000 people, it is still a very big organisation. This is, however, something we will keep looking at. We have outlined ambitious plans to save a further £10billion by 2017/18 and £15billion to £20billion over the next Parliament.

This Government's efficiency and reform programme saved taxpayers £14.3 billion last year alone compared to Labour's last year in office. Taxi use is controlled by departments and includes those for disabled staff members pursuing official business. Details of overseas travel by ministers and senior officials are published quarterly.

ell guys what can I say, 2015 has arrived and as of yet there is no sign of the madness settling down, so I’m still going to embrace the opportunities that are coming my way and ride the tide and see where I fall off.

Letter to the Editor Dear Sir / Madam, As a patron of Dogs Trust, I’m writing to say a big thank you to players of People’s Postcode Lottery for the £175,000 award given to help the charity care for more stray, abandoned and unwanted dogs this year.

Dogs Trust looks after over 17,000 dogs of all shapes and sizes every year across its 21 rehoming centres. The average cost of caring for a dog over the course of a year is around £1,275 and this award will go towards providing vital care.

This can include routine neutering and microchipping, vaccinations and other medical bills along with bedding, toys and the mileage costs of transporting dogs for rehoming. As Dogs Trust never puts a healthy dog to sleep, the charity makes additional efforts provide

a comfortable, stimulating environment for the dogs to keep them happy in kennels whilst they await new homes.

As a dog owner myself, I know how much love and companionship they can provide. If you’re missing some love in your life, and think you could have time to offer a home to a dog, please consider a rescue from Dogs Trust. Your local rehoming centre will be happy to help advise on the best dog for you.

The new year started off with the documentary ‘White Dee - Whats All The Fuss About’ and although it was really hard to watch for me personally, I do feel that the public maybe got to see another side of the person that is me, and I also hope it showed that I am just a everyday gal, who is completely 100% family focused and will do whatever has to be done to provide a better future for my kids and for the youngsters of Birmingham.

So for this everyday gal, can you imagine my shock when I was approached by the man who gave Simon Cowell his 1st ever job lol and another who helped discover Lady Gaga herself, to be part of finding a new girl band - called Office Girls.

Being the person that I am, I agreed to do the Birmingham auditions, as I believe we Brummies have so much talent out there that just isn’t being brought out in the public eye and I know its there - I JUST KNOW IT.

I’ve been down to Borehamwood a few times to do BIT ON THE SIDE - and wow - how weird does it feel sitting on a panel with faces that I’ve watched on TV for years, and they actually know me - will I ever really be able to get used to this.

Auditions went well, and then I was called back by the Americans haha to do the London Auditions too - well I had so much fun and can honestly say I think there will be a brummie girl in the final 5.

Well its final night Friday 6th Feb and I’m kind of hoping Calum Best might win it.

Watch space.

So after probably boring you all enough haha I’m gonna call it

a day for now - but don’t worry, I will be back next month and the month after and after that - for as long as you’re all still interested.

cott Bradlee & Postmodern Jukebox have been entertaining audiences around the globe through YouTube, and now, with their second European Tour getting underway this month, they will be spreading the love on Valentines Day at the Institute in Birmingham.

“We played our first tour of Europe this past June, and to say that it was an amazing experience would be an understatement.” stated Scott.

“I liked it so much that I’ve decided to bring the PMJ crew to Europe again this February for a second, expanded tour. We’ll be hitting some countries for the very first time, as well as returning to cities that we visited last

time.”

The work of Scott Bradlee & Postmodern Jukebox has been viewed on the ensemble’s YouTube channel well over a hundred million times. Most of those doing the viewing, however, are not fully aware of the method to Bradlee’s madness.

On the surface, the method is video – clips of fullband performances (that’s Bradlee on piano) shot in the bandleader’s living room with a single stationary camera.

The madness: pop hits of the present performed à la pop hits of the past. Miley Cyrus’ “We Can’t Stop” assayed as a doo-wop number; Macklemore and Ryan Lewis’ “Thrift Shop” tricked out in

flapper jazz; Sam Smith’s “Stay With Me” rendered a 1940s big-band standard.

In fact, Bradlee’s method runs deeper. He’s educating his audience about 20th-century song styles; he’s commenting on the elasticity of the pop form; he’s confounding cultural context; he’s uniting generations; he’s breaking the rules.

He’s manifesting postmodernist ideas in his approach to production and business as well as music. But as far as the fans are concerned, it’s just fun (and sometimes funny).

Bradlee himself will tell you, simply, “I reimagine a song in another style because I want to hear it that way.”

new ultra-flexible arts space is due this year with The Factory Manchester, a unique large scale facility set to open in the summer.

The artistic environment, which can be transformed from a 2,200 seat theatre to standing capacity of up to 5,000 will be producing work, ongoing, from across the arts and popular culture and will be the permanent home to the MIF (Manchester International Fest-

ival).

With the theme being gold and orange, guest brought a ray of bright sunshine as they honoured him the husband, father, lecturer, community icon…the MAN. As he was being flanked by dancers dressed in orange, gold and blue, he made his very regal, serene entrance as guest hollered in delight at being part of what was a special occasion.

Close friend and colleague, Jack Dromey, Labour MP for Birmingham Erdington led a chorus of praise, in his eulogy, for whom he describes as; “The best of Africa, the best of Britain,

the best of Birmingham. That’s what you are,” he said. “And the honour is with me to have you, not only as a colleague, but as a friend.”

Marcia McLaughlin, the Managing Editor of The Phoenix asked Jack what he thought of Olu, to which Jack replied - “Olu is the most honourable loving man, and I love him from my heart, because he is a gem in the African Community, and it is my pleasure to be here to celebrate his birthday.”

n the futuristic city of San Fransokyo, rebellious 14-year-old tech genius Hiro Hamada (Ryan Potter) spends his days participating in illegal, back alley robot fights.

Worried that he is squandering his potential, Hiro’s older brother Tadashi (Daniel Henney) takes him to the robotics laboratory at his university and introduces Hiro to his friends GoGo (Jamie Chung), Wasabi (Damon Wayans Jr.), Honey Lemon (Genesis Rodriguez) and Fred (T.J. Miller).

Hiro also meets Tadashi’s own creation, a personal healthcare robot named Baymax (Scott Adsit), whose sole purpose is to take care of people.

This one night ignites Hiro’s passion and convinces him to change his life for the better, but when a devastating turn of events throws Hiro into the middle of a dangerous scheme, he is forced to transform Baymax and his other friends into a band of high-tech superheroes in an attempt to save the world.

he opening scene will leave your stomach churning and your appetite dry. FORTH-

WITH! Which is what happened to me as I sat, popcorn in lap, and large cup of fizzing cola in hand. Then BOOM!!!

An almighty explosion had drink and popcorn spilling in all directions as my heart was left pounding at an alarming rate.

Selma,’ the film of the struggle for voting rights for Black people in 1960s America, made me realise how much Dr. Martin Luther King gave of himself, his struggle to, and victory in, connecting races, faiths and communities, in the light of the tyranny he faced.

It showed us how all faiths are connected, how together we can move mountains, whatever happens.

A remarkable film where every actor, led by the remarkable David Oyelowo, directors, writers and the rest of the production team deserve credit and salute for a 1st class adaptation of the life and times of the King era.

If you are reading this and you’re thinking to yourself “Big Hero 6? I haven’t even seen the first five!” then fear not, for this is not the sixth instalment in an ongoing franchise, it is a Disney movie that is loosely based on the Marvel comic of the same name.

The world of animation and the world of superheroes collide in Disney’s latest picture and the result is a fantastic one.

Taking the emotional storytelling we are accustom to from Disney and the frantic, kinetic energy that is synonymous with Marvel, we have been gifted with this hugely satisfying amalgamation that, despite its January release date, is sure to remain one of the best animated films of 2015.

There’s a lot to be admired about Big Hero 6; from the colourful, relatable characters to the bright, vibrant and exquisite animation, this film is visually flawless and is a genuine pleasure to watch.

Then, there’s the humour, which you are bombarded with much of the 102 minute runtime and while some jokes may fall just short of landing, the vast majority of it works and will leave you with a huge smile on your face.

Much of the humour comes from the way characters interact with one another, especially Hiro and Baymax, who I truly believe will become the Olaf of 2015 – a painfully innocent

and kind-hearted character who children and adults alike will love tremendously.

It’s hard to believe how much you can connect with a character that is essentially an emotionless robot. Just wait until you watch the movie; you’ll see!

However, with this being a Disney movie, you know that while you are guaranteed to laugh, your heartstrings are never far from

being tugged at, and Big Hero 6 follows suit.

It seems that one of Disney’s favourite themes is grief and as horrible as this may sound, you know that when you sit down to watch a Disney movie, there’s a strong chance that you are going to experience the emotional death of one or more of the characters.

While that may sound morbid, Disney has mastered the art of focusing on the aftermath of death, where all of the characters help one another to come to terms with it and move on.

It’s more about overcoming difficult situations and having hope in the direst of times and, when you think about it, that’s a pretty beautiful lesson for them to teach

our children.

Big Hero 6 is no different, and features some extremely emotional moments, but they are niftily counterbalanced with humour so things never get too serious.

Now, in terms of the negative aspects of this film, there are only a few minor gripes I can point out, but most of which can be forgiven considering that the target audience for this film are children.

These issues are with certain storytelling devices used throughout the film.

For example, in order to provide us with a little back-story on the lead characters, some of the dialogue feels a little stiff due to the fact that it is full of exposition.

“What would mom and dad say?” Asks Tadashi; only for Hiro to point out that “They’re gone!

They died when I was three, remember?”

It is dialogue like this that unintentionally drew laughter from the audience and put a slight blemish on what was meant to be an emotional scene between two brothers.

Fortunately, as previously stated, these issues can be forgiven as they are few and far between and it is a film aimed at children, so it is understandable that they would try and rush certain dialogue scenes in order to prevent their audience from getting bored.

Big Hero 6 is almost pitch-perfect. With enough animated hijinks to keep children happy, enough exhilarating action to keep teenagers interested and enough heart to keep adults involved, Big Hero 6 is truly a film with something for everyone.

It takes everything we adore about Disney and everything we love about Marvel and throws it all together into one enormously entertaining experience. I for one cannot wait for Big Hero 6 2, or whatever the hell they’re going to call the sequel.

When Cherrelle first got the call to say they wanted to featured her, she first thought is it can't be THE ‘HELLO Magazine’, until her agent confirmed it was.

Cherrelle said “I was humbled and thought, why me?” This was obvious to all who know of Cherrelles performance and determination.

Sharon, Cherrelles mom has been her constant source of support, who always said 'follow your dreams, work hard and I'll be there to support you' and her mother has been there every step of the way.

So who else would she take to a cast gathering.

When I asked what advice would give to budding actors, her words were simple. "Study your craft, we are naturally gifted but we need to widen our horizons; giving you a variety of skills; immersing yourself in your art so that you can be prepared for all levels of performance ".

When asked what was her long

term goal Cherrelle was clear; “To enjoy a mix of the arts, theatre, stage, screen, and to be creative, as one day she may want to be a Director.

Cherrelle also has also taken another huge step training for her first half marathon, running 13.1 miles in 2 hours 21 minutes,raising money for the Gaaran foundation.

They plan to build an orphanage in Berbera Somalia in a much needed area where children 6/7 years old are working to feed a family of 6 and have no education or children who are orphans walk the street and regularly go missing.

Sunshine for Jamaican Girls

ince the Jamaica Netball team fondly known as the ‘Sunshine Girls’ returned home from the Commonwealth games with the most talked about medal having beaten England to take the bronze in Glasgow.

Jamaica who are 4th in the World beat England who are 3rd in world, and the scene was set again as the England Netball team travelled to Jamaica for a test series planned not long after the games for the 10th, 11th and the 13th January 2015.

The netball World Championships are to be held in Sydney Australia, in August 2015. Both countries knew the importance of the victory of the Supreme Ventures series held in the National stadium in Kingston.

There was great support from fellow athletes and a host Jamaicas world renowned artists such as Beenie Man and Etana who enter-

tained the home crowd before the matches.

The visitors were given a warm welcome from the home crowd as they encouraged the home team to to live up to their name of Sunshine Girls.

The opening game saw the Sunshine girls victorious with a nine goal win 56-47, however in the second game darkness desended on Jamaica in more ways than one as a powercut with one minute fifteen seconds to go with England in the lead awarded them the victory 5547, leveling the series setting the scene for an exciting final game.

Both teams knew this game was as important as the bronze medal game in Glasgow and the tactical display that saw the score level at 37-37 going into the final 15 minutes the crowd rallied behind their team and the Sunshine Girls were ‘clinical in their finish’ which gave them a 56- 47 victory over the visitors giving the Jamaicans a 2-1

England were gracious in defeat and said Jamaica had deserved their victory. Defender Vangalee Williams was named the player of the series, Captain Nicola A.Aiken Pinnock thanked England for their competitive play that brought out the best from her team and also thank their home support who were pivotal in this victory.

All minds now turn to the World Championship and the teams campaign dubbed ‘GOLD RUSH DOWN UNDER’ this National squad do not have financial support the other teams who sit above them

in the world ranking but it is obvious they have the ability.

Atkinson was clinical in her finish as she won the 100 metre women's breaststroke at the Short Course World Championships in Doha, Qatar last December, record equalling time.

The Jamaican has become a prominent standard-bearer for black swimmers across the globe. Still, in a sport dominated by white swimmers and burdened by stereotypes, there have been the far too frequent challenges of racism.

amaica and the UK are set to rock to reggae rhythms this February as a series of events are planned across the Caribbean island and Great Britain to celebrate what would have been Bob Marley's 70th birthday.

The late, iconic reggae star Bob Marley is set to be remembered in his homeland of Jamaica with a landmark concert to mark what would have been his 70th Birthday.

The artist who is famous for worldwide hits such as 'No Woman No Cry' and 'One Love' will be honoured by the people of Jamaica and fans from across the world with a musical tribute to the man that dedicated his life to music.

Activities to mark the 70th anniversary of Bob Marley's birthday will take place on February 6 at the Bob Marley Museum on Hope Road and Tuff Gong Studio on Marcus Garvey Drive.

The day's activities will include symposiums on Reggae Music and Reggae Jam sessions with Chronixx, Kabaka Pyramid and Nomaddz.

Stars from the world of music will come together on 7 February 2015 at Kingston's Waterfront to continue the celebration in honour of the music legend's contribution to reggae.

Three of Bob Marley's sons Stephen, Damian and Kymani, will headline the free concert with other music legends including the likes of Tarrus Riley, Marcia Griffith and Lauryn Hill

set to perform to the crowds.

Thousands of fans are expected to pay homage and head to Bob's homeland to mark the anniversary.

The concert will feature as part of an annual month-long celebration dubbed Reggae Month It's Kingston for February that will see Jamaica celebrate its roots as the home of reggae with a busy calendar of activities kicking off on 1 February 2015.

Meanwhile here in the UK, Marley's base for many years in the 1970's, the Jamaica Tourist Board (JTB) is launching a social media campaign asking the UK to share details of how they plan to celebrate the star's birthday on 6 February 2015.

Literal Enlightenment

A

s individuals, we are often inspired to perform certain activities by various factors in our daily lives.

Our decisions are more than often influenced by outside factors, whether it is through an interaction with another person or a television programme that manages to persuade us to give up all sugars and ultimately start the diet the next day, or the day after...

A powerful medium that affects our perceptions and can often alter our actions in a certain direction, are books.

Naturally they have been around for centuries, and have enlightened millions across the world and touched generations in many different ways, and with some instances even managed to change our society.

An example of this, can be the ‘Diary of a Young Girl’ by Anne Frank, a title and piece of history that everyone is familiar with, regardless of whether they had read it or merely heard about it through a friend.

Her story was majorly influenced by the situations around her, the environment she’s been placed in - or trapped rather - and the historically significant time setting that allowed her to produce a memento which has

a distinct meaning to each one of us.

My recent eye-opening visit to Amsterdam, almost compelled me to see the Anne Frank museum and house.

Oddly, the inside did not feel like a museum until I reached the gift shop at the end of the tour - which almost resembled a stimulation of the ambushed Jewish family of which I felt a part of for the brief hour.

The silence of all visitors and their ever so cautious steps up the numerous and challengingly steep staircases, reinforced the atmosphere of the sheltered lifestyle

restaurant visit at 3 months old could not tuck into a large steak, her grandmother and her father Mark Dwayne ate one on her behalf as she sucked on her bottle of milk.

This was all done to mark Maxine’s 50th, a remarkable memorable occasion, a gift from her daughter Talisa.

had been born with a heart condition and had open heart surgery as a child.

I thought I was well until I learnt at the age of 33 that I had developed heart failure.

I had been even more tired and breathless than normal but put it down to being a busy working mum.

With medication I carried on leading a near normal life.

Until one night last year I had a cardiac arrest in my sleep.

My husband thought I was dead and told my two teenage daughters 'mums gone.' Thankfully I was resuscitated and given a second chance of life.

After the cardiac arrest I had fantastic support and reassurance from a local British Heart Foundation nurse. She was positive and upbeat, telling me that I could live my life as well as, if not better than before.

I was fitted with an ICD, an internal defibrillator. If my heart ever goes into a dangerous rhythm again it will shock it back into a normal rhythm.

The British Heart Foundation is funding research into new treatments and possibly a cure for heart failure.

The help and support I've received has helped keep me alive, to enable me to spend many more precious years with my family.

Share your fitness efforts and join city’s magic million challenges

R

esidents are being asked to put their best foot forward – and complete one of two city-wide fitness challenges.

Wolverhampton City Council's Public Health team have thrown down the gauntlet to people to collectively either complete a million miles or lose a million pounds in support of the city's fight against obesity.

Residents are being encouraged to record their distances whenever they walk, swim, cycle or run a mile or more on the special Million Miles for Wolverhampton challenge totaliser – with the hope that

collectively Wolverhampton can cover 1,000,000 miles over the next 12 months.

The miles should be in addition to distances that people complete on a regular basis, for instance walking the dog further, cycling to work rather than driving, doing an extra few lengths in the swimming pool or spending more time on the rowing machine at the gym.

Wherever or whenever these miles are completed, people are being asked to add them to the online totaliser available at www.wolverhampton. gov.uk/wecantw8 and help Wolverhampton towards the magic million mark.

Meanwhile, residents who are looking to lose weight this new year can support a separate challenge – by helping Wolverhampton to collectively shed a million pounds.

Each pound they lose can be added to the Million Pounds for Wolverhampton challenge totaliser online as Wol-

verhampton seeks to lose 1,000,000 lbs.

Councillor Sandra Samuels, Wolverhampton City Council's Cabinet Member for Health and Wellbeing, said: “These very public challenges have been launched on the back of the Obesity Summit held in Wolverhampton in November, in which we came together as a city to start to tackle the obesity crisis facing Wolverhampton.

“More than two thirds of adults in our city are either obese or overweight and an increasing number of young people are following suit, so it's imperative that we do something about the problem now before it's too late.

“Similarly, we want to recognise the great efforts that people are making to lose weight in Wolverhampton – and I am sure plenty of residents have embarked on health kicks this new year – by recording the pounds they shed.

“So if anyone is on a diet or bit of a health kick

and the scales are going down, I’d urge them to log on and record their weight loss over the coming weeks and months and help us complete our own million pound drop.

“There are of course many good reasons to maintain fitness levels and a healthy weight, from the immediate benefits of having more energy and feeling better about yourself to longer term rewards like reducing risks of potentially life-threatening conditions like stroke, heart disease, cancer and type 2 diabetes.”

More hi-tech monitors to combat ‘silent killer’

H

ealth bosses are set to increase the number of hi-tech health monitors located across the city after a successful trial in 2014.

Seven state-of-the-art Health Monitors, which measure height, weight, body mass index (BMI) and blood pressure, were installed in locations across Birmingham last August, with an eighth going into Aston’s New Jerusalem Apostolic Church in November.

The free-to-use monitors provide a printout of results and people are encouraged to seek further medical advice if they have concerns.

People are also encouraged to access the many lifestyle services available across the city such as weight

management services, physical activity schemes and smoking cessation.

High blood pressure is sometimes called the silent killer, as it often has no symptoms but can significantly increase your risk of heart disease, stroke and dementia.

The £3,000 machines make it easy for people to regularly check their blood pressure and have already been used over 12,000 times. Now Cabinet Member for Health and Wellbeing, Councillor John Cotton, has given the green-light for more.

He said: “There’s no substitute for seeing a health professional if you’re worried about your health but these machines act as an early warning system for a number of problems, including the ‘silent killer’ high blood

pressure.

The results give people a nudge towards seeing their GP to discuss concerns or making healthy changes to their lifestyle like losing weight, drinking less, doing more physical activity or using less salt.

Nudging people towards a healthier lifestyle can have a major impact on some of the largest causes of mortality and morbidity in Birmingham.”

One of the next wave of monitors has been offered to Birmingham Central Mosque – people from a South Asian background are more likely than people from other communities in the UK to have certain health conditions, including diabetes and heart disease.

Cllr Cotton added: “We’re target-

ing a community who are at high risk of developing heart disease and our aim is to help people make changes to their lifestyles to hopefully lead longer, healthier lives.”

The group, formed by committed Nigerians who share their leader’s vision of transformation anchored on truth, honesty, hard work, discipline, courage, honour, social justice and peaceful co-existence, set out their agenda to show their native country in the best light, whilst highlighting

the Jonathan administration’s achievements and project Nigeria positively worldwide.

At their conference, in London, specially invited guests joined grassroots supporters and party workers as they rallied for that final push, before Election Day. Led by a host of distinguished, learned figures, prominent both in Britain and Nigerian, the Total Support Group For Jonathan set out to cement their leader’s already seemingly ‘given’ to continue in power further on.

Group Director, Coordinator and Chair, Nigeria’s leading Investigative Reporter, Alhaji Dauda Awwal, led a chorus of praise, adulation plus build and re-enforce a solid core of support and goodwill for their under-fire leader.

lar ‘politicking’ rhetoric, he heaped praise on GoodLuck’s economic record and position.

On his country’s much-highlighted woes, he said: “Our objective is to counter the negativity being carried out by the western media,” he said. “We want to correct the ill-perceived notion of African politics often perpetuated.”

Taking a non-political stance, she enlightened members of the greater need for a united front in Nigeria, for the country to be seen in a more positive light internationally - whoever the leader is.

The day also saw the launch of The Executive, a new expansive magazine detailing the achievements of President Goodluck Jonathan and profiling past leaders from 1960-present, and beyond.

merican Singer and Songwriter Miguel has been added to an already stellar cast of international artistes for the Tobago Jazz Experience 2015.

Martinique sees improved direct air service from North America and Puerto Rico

WTM Latin America 2015 opens visitor registration

Students Flying High after Training with Co-Op Travel

ravel and Tourism students have complemented their studies at Walsall College by successfully completing customer service and sales training with Co-operative Travel, the largest independent travel agent in the UK. Over 40 students attended the

two-day training course at the Holiday Inn in Walsall, which covered communicating with customers, body language, building and managing relationships and converting an enquiry into a sale. The course also involved students taking part in role plays based on various customer scenarios.

Level 3 students have now been invited to complete work experience placements at the firm’s branches across the region and put their training into practice.

David Higgins, Curriculum Manager for Hospitality, Travel and Tourism at Walsall College, said: “Whichever career direction students decide to take in the

travel and tourism industry, customer service and sales skills are fundamental requirements in the sector. This training was a fantastic opportunity for students to see how these skills are employed in reality in the industry.”

Colleague Knowledge and Skills Manager at Co-operative Travel, Nichola Hodgkins, commented: “We are delighted that the students were able to join us during the Customer Journey training programme.

It was amazing to see how the students and Midcounties Co-op-

erative Travel colleagues interacted with each other and were able to share this fantastic experience.”

It was also reported that young people living in the home “benefit from exceptional support from staff and external professionals to en-

sure their physical, emotional and psychological needs are met.”

Councillor Barbara Cassidy, Portfolio Holder for Children's Services at Walsall Council, said: "This is extremely positive news for looked after children in Walsall.

Although we would prefer for looked after children to be able to return home safely or live with a foster family, if this is not possible, it is reassuring to know that our children's homes are providing them with a safe, caring and nurturing environment.”

A Tale of Life, Love and Longing

here is a new course for social workers to improve outcomes for looked after children, which was launched by the British Association for Adoption & Fostering and Sheffield Hallam University.

The postgraduate diploma 'Advanced Practice in Family placement and Looked After Children,' which is also aimed at other professionals with specific responsibilities for looked after children, is designed to examine how professionals’ practice and performance impacts upon successful permanence for children and young people. The course, will focus on skills and practice development, commences this coming April.

It will initially be run at Sheffield Hallam University and at an alternative location in Leeds with future courses planned in London and Birmingham. Modules involve face to face learning followed by electronic seminars and tutorials.

Areas covered will include understanding and resolving com-

plex legal and ethical dilemmas for children and birth parents in family placements and developing knowledge and expertise in supporting a wide range of carers for those children who may have very complex needs.

The diploma will be taught by highly experienced trainers from BAAF and members of the Sheffield Hallam University staff

bringing together the complementary expertise of both organisations. On completion of the course, students may register for a master's award through submission of a dissertation.

BAAF and SHU. We look forward to welcoming students from across England, helping them to build on and increase their knowledge and experience in their work with looked after children.”

Dr Anne Hollows, a principal lecturer in social work at Sheffield Hallam University said: “This is the first dedicated post graduate course for this important area of practice with children and young people.

The combination of knowledge and experience between BAAF and Sheffield Hallam University builds on our long established partnership and we intend to offer a significant opportunity to improve and develop advanced practice in this field.”

The diploma meets with continual professional development (CPD) requirements of the College of Social Work’s (TCSW) Performance Capability Framework (PCF) at advanced level and is now open for applications and prospective students can register at http://www.shu.ac.uk/ students/form .

Snap, crackle and pop put into pupils’ school day

hildren in Wolverhampton are preparing to add some extra snap, crackle and pop to their usual morning routine.

Starting shortly, free boxes of Kellogg’s Cornflakes and Rice Krispies will be provided at participating schools and nurseries to enable youngsters to enjoy a healthy breakfast and set them up for a day's learning.

Kellogg's and Wolverhampton-based foodbank The Well have joined forces with Wolverhampton City Council to provide thousands of boxes of cereal to participating schools and Early Years settings.

Councillor Phil Page, Wolverhampton City Council's Cabinet Member for Schools, Skills and

Learning, said: “Breakfast is the most important meal of the day; it gets your metabolism going and puts you in a good mood by helping to regulate blood sugar levels, so helps pupils perform better at school.

“Many of our schools and Early Years settings already provide food and drink through breakfast clubs, and this generous donation by Kellogg’s and The Well will either supplement their breakfast clubs or enable them to set one up.”

Sugar Swaps aims to encourage families to swap sugary items for alternatives, for instance swapping sugary drinks for water or lower fat milk and chocolate biscuits for fresh fruit.

he Secretary of State for Education has hailed the improvements made at a Wolverhampton school over the last two years.

Nicky Morgan MP invited teachers Karen Titley and Laura Watkins-Brown from Woodthorne Primary to a reception at Lancaster House in London to find out more about how the school had achieved its success and to share best practice with teachers from other high-performing schools around the country.

Ofsted rated Woodthorne Primary School in Tettenhall as ‘Good’ following an inspection

last year – after previously declaring that it required improvement in an inspection in 2012.

They found that the school's new leadership team had been effective in driving school improvement since the previous inspection, that better teaching meant that pupils' learning had improved, and attainment had improved significantly.

In her letter to Headteacher Justin Crilly, she praised the “dedication and sheer hard work” of staff which had led to “great improvements over the past few years.”

She said: “This achievement is testament to your leadership, and that of your governing body and

senior management team. We are working to put in place a schoolled system, where great school leaders can support and collaborate with each other to drive up standards for all, and the achievements of individual schools like yours are an essential part of this vision.”

Crilly said: “We are tremendously proud of our school and our pupils’ achievements over the last two years. The behaviour and attitude of our children has been recognised as outstanding by Ofsted and they really are second to none.

We are now in a fantastic position to move the school forward.”

Origami session for crafty kids

C

reative youngsters can enjoy a crafty half-term holiday workshop at the Smestow Valley Nature Reserve shortly.

Wolverhampton City Council’s Countryside Rangers will be holding an animal origami session, with children of all ages invited to come along and create their own paper menagerie.

It takes place on Tuesday February 17, in the former Tettenhall railway station building. No experience is necessary and places are free, though as this is a drop-in session large groups are asked to book in advance.

Head of Adult Learning calls time after 7 “happy and fulfilling” years

ue Knottenbelt retired from her Vice Principal position at City College in 2007, but a three month assignment with the Adult Education Service in 2008 turned into an unexpected second career. Sue became their Head of Curriculum and Quality and has been Head of Adult Learning since 2012.

Speaking at her retirement party, Sue said: “My years at Birmingham Adult Education Service have been amongst the happiest and most fulfilling of my professional life.

I have been on a truly amazing journey with colleagues and I leave with the deepest admiration and respect for the work carried out by colleagues in the service.

Our mission is to make a difference by providing excellent education and all the evidence shows that we do just that.

The 22-year-old goalkeeper from Mohali turned out for the Stabaek Football Club in Norway, making him only the second Indian ever to have played at that

he British Asian Rugby Association (BARA) celebrated its tenth anniversary with a reception at the House of Commons which featured a host of keynote speakers including former Chelsea and Aston Villa footballer and Football Association anti-racism champion Paul Elliott CBE and Mark Pawsey MP, Chair of the Commons and Lords Rugby Club.

BARA, established in 2004 by dual code international Ikram Butt (England Rugby League and Pakistan Rugby Union), has been a force for good in terms of promoting community cohesion across the UK through both codes of the oval ball game.

Former Leeds Rhinos, Featherstone Rovers, Huddersfield Giants, and London Broncos, winger, Butt, said: “BARA has come a very long way in the past decade with many effective

initiatives and projects delivered within communities across the nation that seek to build bridges and cement community relations through sport.

Now, more than ever, we need to promote positive messages about anti-racism, discrimina-

tion and domestic violence and BARA will continue to keep banging the drum for progressive initiatives such as these.”

Paul Elliott said: “It’s important that young people have the opportunity to thrive by getting involved in sport. BARA is an organisation that makes sport fun and free of prejudice and that can only contribute towards bringing everyone together.”

Butt went on to play for Pakistan’s rugby union team and is widely recognised as one of the most influential British Asian role models after picking up a number of awards for his work with BARA. “I look forward to BARA celebrating 20 years of success in 2024,” he said.

But the research shows there are clearly fewer women than men exercising or playing sport regularly.

There are lots of reasons for this but one of the biggest issues is that many women feel they'll be seen as not fit enough, a bit overweight or too old.

'This Girl Can' aims to ease those fears and show that women of all shapes, sizes and levels of ability can and do enjoy sport and physical activity.

We want to celebrate active women on International Women's Day and need the women of Birmingham to play their part."

Grants are available for organisations, groups or individuals to host activity sessions and an online appeal for ideas and suggestions has been launched.

No Strings Badminton is part of Walsall Council's Inspiring Generations programme, one of 36 national projects set up to receive a share of £5.9 million Sport England funding to support grassroots

sports activity.

Its aim is to encourage people to try, play and lead sport in activities covering versions of athletics, badminton, basketball, bowls, boxing, cricket, cycling, football, golf, netball, rugby, squash/racketball, swimming, table tennis, walking, health/fitness and disability sport.

They are adapted so they are easier for people to access and play. The large range of activities is designed to ensure there is

something for all generations to enjoy.

For further information on any Inspiring Generation you can contact your local Council for details.

Sessions take place at Oak Park Leisure Centre, Walsall Wood, on Tuesday evenings from 6.30 to 7.30pm and Thursday daytime from 11.30am to 1.30pm.

Cost is £3 per person or £2 for Move It members. Anyone interested can simply turn up and play on the day.

omen all over Britain will be at the forefront of sporting and physical activities as the ‘This Girl Can' campaign gets under way with the aim of promoting physical activities, helping women of all ages, shapes and sizes, overcome barriers to participation.

Developed by Sport England, it is a celebration of active women everywhere to prove that whatever the size, ability or previous experience, sport can be a fun and enjoyable part of their lives.

And with figures regularly showing that more men play sport than women at every age, the campaign wants to demonstrate that girls and

women of any size, ability or experience can make sport an enjoyable part of their lives.

Based on insight into women’s sporting attitudes and experiences, the Sport England campaign uses humour and a sassy attitude to tackle the fear of judgement that prevents many women taking part in sport and activity.

Using slogans which include: ‘Sweating like a pig, feeling like a fox,’ ‘I’m slow but I'm lapping everyone on the couch’ and ‘I kick balls. Deal with it,’ ‘This Girl Can’ will tackle, head-on, the rising gender gap between the number of men and women playing sport.
