laciers are melting at a faster rate, sea levels are rising at a faster rate, the levels of greenhouse gases are at their highest level now than at any time in our history, and this decade was the warmest on record.

In addition to rising sea levels there can also be more extreme weather such as longer and intense droughts and more extreme floods.

These are, according to environmental groups and scientists, due to global warming.

This phenomenon of global warming generally refers to the climatic changes in temperature and a contributing cause of this phenomenon is human activities.

While many accept there is a correlation between human activity and global warming, can this issue ever be adequately dealt with if all the major political powers fail to get on board and take this issue more serious?

Even if there are some who do not accept the idea of global warming, it has been difficult to escape the prevalence of major bush fires and floods in diverse places during 2019.

A few examples help to demonstrate this. From mid-

March to April 2019 floods in Iran seriously affected 26 out of 31 of the country’s provinces.

There were major floods between March and June 2019 across numerous states in the USA. In September the worst storm in over a hundred years hit Spain.

To make matters worse, this decade was the hottest on recorded with 2010 being the hottest single year on record and 2019 the second hottest.

In response to such extreme weather changes pressure groups like Friends of the Earth, formed in the late 1960s, and more recent groups such as Extinction Rebellion, have been championing the cause of environmental change in

societies.

Political parties concerned with environmental issues such as the Green Party in England and Wales, as well as green parties in most of Europe exist and also serve to challenge human activities that contribute to the rising levels of greenhouse gases.

They are, however, often minor political parties with very little influence over the major political parties in their respective countries.

Despite the efforts of the these groups and minor political parties, it is not clear whether environmental issues is being taken serious by some of the major political powers.

It has to be asked whether

countries such as Australia, Brazil, China, and the USA willing to think global rather national with regard to this policy?

Indeed, there is one thing Bolsonaro in Brazil, President Trump in the USA and Australia’s Scott Morrison, have in common.

They have taken the view that it is better to put the protection and safeguarding of local industries and jobs before global considerations about climate change.

These three countries combined, release significant proportions of greenhouse gases that appear to be contributing to the problem.

For example, Australia’s Scott Morrison is reported to have said the recent burning bush fires were unconnected to the climate change. What is important to Prime Minister Morrison with regard to the country’s coal and gas industries is to safeguard the production of coal for key markets such as China and India to build coal-fired power stations.

As for President Trump he has said he does not believe in man made climate change.

Furthermore, with his ‘America first’ agenda, he also has to protect coal mining interest.

Despite the negative criticism

they have received for their hard-lined views on climate change, it has to be taken into consideration that they were elected by their supporters to serve the broad interests of the people.

That includes tens of thousands of employers in the coal industries.

The problem is, these Although most of the world’s nation states have agreed to cut greenhouse gases, it will have to be seen how serious they take this issue and undertake very serious changes in the many aspects of modern lifestyles.

None of the three leaders singled out here have actually outlined a clear cut alternative explanation for the extreme weather patterns we have witnessed across the globe in recent times.

In the mean time claims and counter claims, climate conferences, promises by some governments, and protests by environmental groups will continue. So too, it seems, will the extreme weather patterns.

In times of extreme weather, everyone tries to rally together to offer help. Perhaps if governments were firmer in their policies on these matters, serious changes would occur.

Au revoir, auf wiedersehen, goodbye

T

oday marks my last day as a Member of the European Parliament, after serving the West Midlands for over 15 years in our region and on the continent.

The mood in parliament? On the most part, sombre.

Successive British Governments have enjoyed nearly 50 years of greater economic cooperation, a united presence on the international stage, and a strong leadership role in the future of the European Union. Now all of that is gone.

Privately, colleagues representing other European countries tell me they have mixed emotions. Many of them are glad to see the back of the Brexit party MEPs, but a large majority continue to lament the loss of Britain’s presence & British MEPs. The Socialist & Democratic Group gave a very warm send off to the Labour MEPs and many

old members were present. The singling off Auld Lang Syne in the Chamber will always be with as one of the most memorable moments of my life and it wasn’t just the British MEPs who were tearful.

Still, the EU moves on.

Across parliament many vacancies must now be filled where the British once were – I’ve had to resign as chair of a delegation and as an S&D group coordinator. I think nothing quite sums up our situation better than one of the parliament’s union jacks being dispatched to the EU-funded European House of History.

The question still remains: what next for the UK? Once we have left the European Union, it is up to our colleagues in Westminster to ensure that the UK leaves on trade terms that protects jobs and the regional economy of the West Midlands. For that task, another deadline looms in the not-too-

distant future, December 2020.

For me, serving our region and our party has and will always be an absolute privilege, and doing so with such strong support has always made the job much more enjoyable. I would like to take this opportunity to thank everybody I have had the opportunity to work with, colleagues past and present, for their friendship, cooperation and commitment to Labour values. It’s not really a goodbye - In the months ahead I will be on the campaign trail with Keir Starmer and Angela Rayner, and once we have a new leader and a deputy, it's important we work together to have Labour gains in the May elections that’ll happen across the region.

I’ll still be there alongside party members fighting the good fight on our path back to power.

Thank you too to all my staff over the year in the West Midlands and in Brussels, and those in the regional office

I have had an opportunity to work with over 20 years, from my first election in 1999. This of course does mean my office in Bristol Street, Birmingham will close its doors from this evening but some my Gmail emails will still be operational.

New Chief Creative Officer Encourages Full Community Cohesion For 2022 Games

A

t a meet-and-great, at Birmingham City Council House, the Birmingham Commonwealth Association invited its members and those on its database for a special introduction with Martin Green CBE, the new Birmingham Commonwealth Games Chief Creative Officer - and get the latest update – as 2022 draws ever closer.

With the ultimate responsibility for the official opening and closing ceremonies and the wider cultural programme for the Games, he brings a huge amount of experience of working on global sporting events and major cultural celebrations.

Attendees heard how, as the new Chief Creative Officer, he will be oversee the Queen’s Baton Relay and provide overarching direction for the team welcome ceremonies (performed when each competing nation and territory arrives at the athletes’ village), how the sports are presented and showcased in venues, medal ceremonies and spectator entertainment.

A former Director of Hull UK City of Culture 2017, Martin Green helped to create a groundbreaking 365 day world class arts festival that reinvigorated the city and engaged its residents.

As Head of Ceremonies for the London 2012 Olympic and Paralympic games he recruited and led team of 500 that delivered the ‘Welcome Ceremonies’, ‘Victory Ceremonies’, ‘Torch Relays’ and ‘Opening’ and ‘Closing Ceremonies’ of The Games.

In addition he has vast experience as Executive Producer of world-class high-profile events including the Birmingham Commonwealth Games Handover, opening The O2 in London and the Tour De France Grande Depart in Yorkshire.

“I’m delighted that I’ll be working with organisations from across Birmingham and

the West Midlands once again.

This region is overflowing with talented, creative people and I want to get their input and ideas, to ensure that the ceremonies and culture programme are dynamic, uniquely Birmingham and truly memorable.

“Birmingham”, he said, “is the stage and we, the citizens, are the show”.

On the pathway forward and what will be a 1st for the Commonwealth Games, Green went on to say: “This is the first time where all the elements of a Commonwealth Games will be put together in one place.

“It, also, will be the first time where both the fully able and Paralympic Games will be taking place at the same time.

“We will draw a core team and find a production company to put things in place, with both professionals and amateurs invited to tender.

“Not enough people know how creative Birmingham is.

“With that in mind, it’s important that we have a second Open Door information session, to highlight the Arts programme (for 2022), at the end of February; where we will spell out the way forward.

“We want to talk about the past, present and future of Birmingham.

“The bigger the city – as Birmingham is – the bigger the event.

“We want to use the length and breadth of the city and the wider

West Midlands region to reach, and work with, as many people as possible.

“The business opportunities, for all sectors, is and will be enormous.

“The baton” Green went on to say “will be touring 72 Commonwealth countries and with that, we want the tour programme to involve as many of the diverse communities as possible”.

On connecting the wider West Midlands community, Martin went on: “This is not just a Birmingham project; this is a West Midlands operation. And with Coventry due to take up the mantle of ‘City of Culture’ next year (2021), the opportunities cultural activities will be immense.

“And, as Birmingham has yearround festivals; where better for the Commonwealth Games 2022?

“The Birmingham Commonwealth Games is vigorously a community project – for all of the Commonwealth countries and territories with Birmingham at the helm”.

Encouraging community cohesion for the Games, Keith Stoke-Smith, Chair of the Birmingham Commonwealth Association, concluded: “The BCA will be holding procurement events this month (February) to encourage businesses and organisations to make sure they get involved”.

Council launches Adopt A Street litter campaign

L i tter - c o n s c i o u s people in Sandwell, in the West Midlands, will get a chance to help keep their areas free of rubbish by joining in a new Adopt A Street campaign.

Under the new campaign, people with civic pride can join in and get tools and equipment to make regular litter-cleaning efforts in their streets.

The campaign, which is being run by the Litter Watch team, gets under way with an appeal for volunteers to adopt an area and make a real community effort.

The ambitious scheme is being backed with a £10,500 town grant from Sandwell’s town grants scheme which will

support the project across the borough’s six towns.

The campaign will complement existing street cleaning across the six towns.

Councillor Maria Crompton, the council's cabinet member for safer communities, said: "We are encouraging residents of Sandwell to adopt their street and pledge to help keep it litterfree.

“We all need to do our bit for the environment and there is no better place to start than in your own street or road.”

Cllr Crompton said the area that the volunteers choose to litter pick can be as small or as large as they wish. “A fiveminute litter pick can make a difference," she said.

A

n ambitious new strategy designed to help Wo l v e r h a m p t o n ' s children and young people reach their full potential was officially launched before a packed audience at The Way Youth Zone.

The Youth Engagement Strategy, #YES, was developed following extensive feedback from nearly 12,000 children and young people and their parents and carers and will support eight to 18-year-olds, or up to 25 for those with special educational needs or disabilities, to be healthier, be connected and be heard.

It comes with additional funding of nearly £2m over the next three years which will be

used to creating a new, citywide youth engagement team, provide better information about and signposting to events and opportunities, and set up a funding pot which young people, families, groups and organisations can use to develop new activities.

Launching the new strategy, developed by the City of Wolverhampton Children and Families Together Board, Leader of the Council Councillor Ian Brookfield said: “We want every child and young person in our city to thrive and hit their full potential, and when I became leader last May I made this one of my key priorities.

“I also tasked my council colleagues to re-prioritise spending and resources in this area, despite the financial

challenges we face, including additional funding for The Way and the launch of our hugely successful WV Holiday Squad.

To me, it’s that important.

"Children and young people have told us very clearly that they want to see more local, community-based provision which is open to all.

“To make this happen, I have secured nearly £2millon in additional funding over the next three years for the building blocks to deliver a new approach”.

He added: “It was great to see so many organisations – and young people – join us for the official launch of the strategy, and to hear and endorse our city’s vision to give Wolverhampton’s youngsters a brighter future.”

Nominate Whitmore Reans’ unsung heroes Partners have got together to recognise the unsung heroes who contribute to making Whitmore Reans and the surrounding area a positive place to live.

People are being encouraged to nominate unsung heroes for a range of awards that celebrate everything from being a good neighbour, promoting community spirit or being a local eco warrior to using their talents to inspire others.

The winners will be invited to an awards ceremony taking place at Wolverhampton Heritage Centre, Clifford Street, on Friday 20 March.

The event will also premiere a performance of a specially commissioned poem by Wolverhampton’s Poet Laureate, Emma Purshouse, and announce the winners of a children’s community poetry competition

which over 300 local children are currently taking part in.

To celebrate the official start an exciting programme of performances and free activities took place in Chinatown, in Southside.

The main stage in Hippodrome Square hosted the official opening and closing ceremonies with a variety of performances and free family-friendly activities throughout the day.

Birmingham Hippodrome’s Patrick Studio also hosted renowned choreographer Corey Baker’s new dance piece performed by Hong Kong Ballet and Birmingham Royal Ballet, with performances and a world premiere screening of Corey’s new film ‘Lying Together’.

PwC opens largest UK regional office in Birmingham

rice Waterhouse Cooper (PwC), the leading professional services firm, has opened its largest UK regional office as it moves into its landmark new Birmingham home, One Chamberlain Square.

The firm’s 2000-strong team in the city has moved from Cornwall Court, where it has been based for 27 years, to its new home at One Chamberlain Square in Birmingham’s Paradise development project.

One Chamberlain Square is a world-class building, designed

by Architect Eric Parry, and is the first building to be completed in the Paradise regeneration scheme in the heart of Chamberlain and Centenary Squares.

Special attention has also been given to the internal design to subtly reflect the diverse industrial heritage of Birmingham and the Midlands region.

The design of workspaces and ‘hackable’ settings are created to give staff and clients a choice of flexible and tech-enabled settings for now and in the future.

The fit-out was inspired by the city’s motto ‘Forward’, together with the graffitti inscription ‘Everything is Possible’, which featured on the brutalist library by exhibiting artist Lucy McLauchlan, as well as its internationally renowned markets and industries, through internal design features and colour schemes.

Each of the seven floors - with their floor to ceiling windows maximising natural light into the space and the views of the city from within - incorporate design

l One Chamberlain Square cues from important aspects of the city’s identity, including the original Birmingham markets, the Jewellery Quarter, textiles, industrial manufacturing, confectionary, and arts and literature.

The sixth floor is also home to a unique piece of artwork - a transcribed spoken word poem entitled ‘Midlander’ by Birmingham-based writer and performer Casey Bailey.

A diverse steering group, from new joiners to senior partners, has worked together for the past three years, canvassing the opinions and requirements of all staff, working together with the design team to create an amazing space that is fit for the future of work and will provide first-class space and facilities for clients, colleagues and community interests which PwC works closely with.

Matthew Hammond, Midlands Region Chairman and Senior Partner for PwC in Birmingham, said: “It is with immense pride on behalf of all those involved in PwC’s investment in One Chamberlain Square that we move

into our new home in the very heart of Birmingham and the UK. “The culmination of many years of hard work by our colleagues and the development partners have made the visionary scheme for Paradise, and in particular One Chamberlain Square, a reality.

PwC will also be the anchor tenant of the Paradise scheme with One Chamberlain Square being the first building to be occupied ahead of the completion of Two Chamberlain Square this Spring.

The Firm’s move to One Chamberlain Square supports the firm’s continued growth in the Midlands. The PwC Birmingham team has now surpassed 2,000 colleagues as the firm grows towards it planned target of 2,300 by the end of 2020.

ince the early part of the 20th century, analysts have been pointing out that an essential component of enterprise success, lies in the type of resilience among owners operating commercial, non-commercial and professional industries.

This human trait is also attributed to those seeking to overcome trials and tribulations or as the saying goes, ‘the vicissitudes of life’.

During the latter part of 2019, scores of adult learners attending an EU-funded course, agreed in principle, that the impact of enterprise resilience is synonymous too, with the quality of leadership and management provided to production and service organisations within the Midlands.

They affirmed that successful growth and development of businesses was premised on owners focus on long-term strategy rather than relying on the purity of tactics that nourish short-term goal modelling.

The trainees contributed to a published ‘Learners Workbook’ that embodied a range of theoretical principles including examples of skill-sets required from the ideas-generation to actual start-up phase or stage.

Most of the trainees felt that while ‘creativity and innovation’ were essential to start-ups, the ‘power of thought’ also was pivotal to the synchrony and congruence, to the success of firms today, especially servicebased entities.

Effective planning was also perceived as essential to personal care, fashion designing, financial services, education, marketing and other people-centred enterprises.

Trainees felt that human capital was a signifier for entrepreneurs who wanted to secure market share, as part of the business planning start-up process.

In evaluating enterprise resilience, more than 50% of trainees admitted that understanding business rules and regulations, was pivotal to the start-up planning and implementation process.

There were approximately 20 industry sectors (September 2019), that comprised micro, small, medium and large enterprises, having between 10 and 250 plus employees combined (See Table 1).

Resource Resilience

Flexibility, time management, negotiation, financial, information, conflict management, communication and strategy are also keys to the overall start-up process and eventual success of firms.

In their response to the range of caveats for starting commercial or non-commercial firms locally, trainees identified several imperatives according to the following imperatives: • “Be very clear about the type of business to set up”.

• “A daily ‘To-Do’ List to help and support business ideas”.

• “Ensure there are excellent premises for business start-up”.

• “Ensure proper communication systems are in place”.

• “Have the right information for customers or clients”.

• “Keep a close eye on the market and plan carefully” • “Register the business formally”.

• “Seek sound advice from experts throughout the process”.

Looking Back to the Future - A New Decade

D

o you remember January 2010? Steve Jobs unveiled the iPad which sold 300,000 units on its first day.

In May of that year Nick Clegg and David Cameron announced their coalition in the gardens of Downing Street, in October of that year, One Direction perform live on the X factor and no one had even heard of the Great British Bake Off!!

I could go on, even the 2012 Olympics seems a long time ago now, but we can all look forward to the Tokyo Olympics later this year.

Nobody it seems has yet come up with a good name for the 2010s?

Having looked at the headline numbers for the past decade, economic growth over the decade has averaged at 1.8% with the strongest period in the middle of the decade, inflation averaged at 2.2%, unemployment averaged at 6.1% although latest figures show that it was 3.8% at the end of the decade, the lowest for 45 years.

Some futurologists in the 1980s predicted that we would have conquered cancer and Mars by 2010 and that all our energy would come via satellites from the sun. So much for predictions!

Anyway, talking of predictions, what will 2020 or indeed the next decade have in store for us all? I have lost count of all of the ‘2020 Vision’ documents produced by many organisations and businesses over the past few years that I have read.

How many of their predictions have been realised I wonder? As for Boris, well he now has to deliver, there are no excuses, ifs or buts, he has a 5 year mandate with a majority that many predicted would be at best half of what he achieved, as I recall, when he was Mayor of London, he once joked that he had more chance of being reincarnated as an olive than becoming PM. He has many promises to deliver on, ‘get Brexit done’, sort out the NHS, recruit the 5000 GPs, the 31,000 nurses, and build the new hospitals.

Interestingly, 2020 is the 200th anniversary of the birth of Florence Nightingale where the World Health Organisation has designated 2020 as the ‘Year of the Nurse’.

Doing all of this of course while ensuring economic prosperity, business confidence

Sandwell shortlisted for international Stop Slavery Award

To keep the Government in check, it also demonstrates the importance of having a strong and credible opposition, the Labour party have yet to conclude their postmortem on the last election failure, it will be interesting to see who will be elected Leader and Deputy Leader on the 4th April.

Moving swiftly on to the USA, there has been much discussion about what will happen in the Presidential elections later this year with the impeached Donald Trump?

Well it seems highly unlikely he will be convicted in the Senate where two thirds majority would be required. Looking back over history, most presidents win reelections.

With a strong economy, they do so almost without fail, the last time a president elected to a first term and stood for a second term and lost despite a robust

growth was in 1892.

Not withstanding the latest events in the Middle East, his approval ratings are currently at 42%, Barack Obama and George W. Bush both had approval ratings close to 50% when they were only narrowly re-elected.

Whatever happens in November, we might spend 2020 watching Washington as much as we have been ‘forced’ to watch Brussels from 2016- 2019.

What some people have said about the coming year however, is that post-Brexit politics will be unlike pre-Brexit politics because as an independent country, we will for the first time in 47 years be ultimately responsible for our own destiny, and with independence comes great responsibility and risk as well as great opportunity.

Although, as Churchill once said, ‘I always avoid prophesying beforehand because it is much better to prophesy after the event has already taken place’.

Work to combat slavery and human trafficking in Sandwell has been shortlisted for an international Stop Slavery Award.

A number of successful operations to rescue victims and the arrest of criminals has already helped to give Sandwell’s work a regional and national reputation.

Now, the Sandwell Slavery and Human Trafficking Operational Partnership (SHOP) has been shortlisted in the Stop Slavery Collaboration Award.

It is shortlisted along with two other entries in the Thomson Reuters Foundation Award Scheme, for having a collaborative programme that has had a tangible impact.

SHOP has been praised for close partnership work to identify and tackle forced labour, child trafficking, domestic servitude and criminal and sexual exploitation.

Sandwell also featured last year in a BBC One Panorama programme, The Hunt for Britain’s Slave Gangs, which highlighted close partnerships with West Midlands Police and Hope for Justice.

They worked together on an investigation and trial of slave gang members who were jailed for enslaving people in the borough.

SHOP, which has been highlighted in previous award schemes, has been praised by Sandwell Council Leader Councillor Yvonne Davies who, with Chief Executive David Stevens, signed a charter last year pledging to make Sandwell a slavery-free community.

Councillor Davies said: “Sandwell has done some really effective work on these appalling crimes of our time where the most vulnerable people are trapped in the most dreadful situations.

“It is vital that the council works with the police and other partner organisations to combat modern slavery and human trafficking and identify and support the victims and survivors.

“I am very proud of the work being done in Sandwell and that our partnership work is being recognised in a prestigious international award scheme.”

Councillor Davies said it was vital that everyone played a part in spotting any signs of slavery and reported it to the authorities.

SHOP includes a range of agencies who are able to work together to protect victims, pursue offenders and disrupt modern slavery locations.

The UK’s Africa summit offered lofty promises of commitment but not enough substance

ritain’s Secretary of State for International Development, Alok Sharma, was in Kenya causing a bit of destruction at the Nairobi Securities Exchange along the way.

“I was asked to ring the bell,” he told the audience at the UK-Africa Investment Summit in London.

“I was told to ring the bell with vigour and I did and the top fell off. I explained I was channelling Boris Johnson’s government’s new energy.”

The PM likes to boast about the attention he gave to Africa during his two-year stint as foreign secretary when he visited 11 countries on the continent.

(He prefers not to reminisce about things he said about Africa before then, such as when he wrote in The Spectator in 2002; ‘The problem is not that we were once in charge [of Africa], but that we are not in charge anymore’.)

The attention Africa is now receiving from the UK government is as much about

Brexit as anything else. With the UK on the verge of leaving the European Union (EU) on terms yet to be agreed, it needs to shore up its trading relations with other parts of the world.

The likes of Johnson, Sharma and Africa minister Andrew Stephenson often cite two facts in particular: the continent has eight of the 15 fastest growing economies in the world and, by 2050, will be home to a quarter of the world’s consumers. That spells opportunity and a way of

mitigating the damage Brexit could do.

The UK Africa Investment Summit was a one-off event.

And while the UK claims to be interested in the entire continent, only 21 countries were invited.

The rationale behind that remains murky.

One senior government figure said they wanted to focus on countries with the strongest ties or with the greatest potential.

Another official added there was “a healthy dose of political perspectives as well.”

The invitees included Guinea and Rwanda, whose trade with the UK is worth less than £30 million a year. Others with more valuable trade like Namibia and Zimbabwe were excluded.

An awkward underlying truth is that African trade has been in decline for the UK. It accounted for 4.2% of UK trade in 2012, but it has been closer to 2.5% in the past couple of years.

South Africa, Nigeria and Algeria account for more than half of all UK-Africa trade. This is in line with some wider trends.

“For all the talk of impact

investment, the amount of capital [committed to Africa] is falling,” says Nick O’Donohoe, chief executive of CDC Group, the UK’s development finance agency.

“People are pulling back; banks are pulling back. That’s partly because the cost of capital post the financial crisis has gone up. The cost of compliance has caused doing business to be more expensive.”

Brexit is moving things into sharper focus though. To date London has signed trade continuity agreements with 12 African countries, to replace existing trade deals via the EU. In January the UK signed an agreement with four eastern and southern Africa countries (Madagascar, Mauritius, Seychelles and Zimbabwe). Trade with them was worth £2 billion in 2018.

An economic partnership agreement was then signed with Southern African Customs Union members (Botswana, Eswatini, Lesotho, Namibia and South Africa) as well as Mozambique.

That covers trade worth £10.3 billion a year.

It also signed association agreements with Morocco and Tunisia and agreed to mirror the EU’s generalized scheme of preferences, which will give 35 other countries reduced or zero tariffs into the UK. Other continuity agreements with Algeria, Cameroon, Côte d’Ivoire, Egypt, Ghana and Kenya are still under negotiation.

The government announced £1.5 billion ($2 billion) of initiatives, including £350 million to develop sustainable infrastructure projects. London is also setting up “infrastructure partnerships” with Egypt, Ethiopia, Ghana, Kenya

and Uganda alongside the African Development Bank (AfDB), with the aim of generating billions of pounds of private sector investment in sustainable energy, transport and telecoms.

There was plenty of commercial activity too, with 27 deals worth more than £6.5 billion ($8.5 billion), including a £167 million investment by brewer Diageo in Kenya and a £222 million deal by NMS Infrastructure to build six hospitals in Côte d’Ivoire.

The UK’s approach has been criticized by some campaigning groups though.

An open letter to the government from 12 organizations including Global Justice Now and the Jubilee Debt Campaign said it “seems to be less about effective development and more about promoting British business interests.”

From a London perspective, the two things go hand-in-hand though.

“The key to development is stimulating private sector growth, stimulating growth in exports, stimulating job creation.

Those are the things that raise everybody’s standards of living,” says O’Donohoe.

For African countries there is opportunity amid the potential Brexit turmoil, with a chance to insist on better trade terms from a UK under pressure to offset the damage of reduced access to the EU. “No wonder AfDB president Akinwumi Adesina told the summit “Don’t get scared of Brexit. You can exit and look the other way and Africa will be there.”

Royal visit sparks greater connections between Ghana and Jamaica

n his visit to the UK, His Royal Highness King Nene Tetteh Ayiku Abordonu IV of Ghana underwent a special meeting with the Jamaica High Commissioner in London, Mr Seth George Ramocan, with CEO/Founder of The Phoenix Newspaper Dr Marcia McLaughlin F.Birm.Soc to discuss ways of further developing the already vastly growing links between the two countries – historically, culturally and by way of business acumens.

Though not a fully-fledged State visit, on his arrival in South Kensinton, His Royal Highness was greeted by Pan African Royalty, Princess Moradeun AdedoyinSolarin and Princess Toyin Onagoruwa, as well as Chairman of the Phoenix Newspaper Dr Neslyn Watson-Druee before his meeting with the High Commissioner, Mr Ramocan.

An intense and somewhat fruitful meeting between the two hugely distinguished figures – which

would also include The Phoenix Newspaper’s Dr. Marcia - further enhanced the already strong bond there has always been between the two culturally conscious states – so much so, in fact, that it was they – together – who would instigate what was a much-vaunted photo shoot that they both insist would include the other specially invited guests there; that would be Dr Neslyn, Princess Moradeun and Princess Toyin.

That followed the exchange of gifts to those concerned. HRH presented His Excellency (Mr. Ramocan), with a traditionally Ghanaian Kente Cloth. In return the High Commissioner presented the King with a book 'Fi Real Jamaica', which is full of lively and engaging pictures of Jamaican living and sights; giving him (HRH) the ideal opportunity of exploring the real Jamaica.

Dr Marcia also received a gift of Appleton Rum from the High Commissioner, before the group enjoyed a steakhouse luncheon at the Grosvenor House Hotel, Park Lane.

he Nishkam Centre, in Birmingham, hosting a launch for the revolutionary book, ‘The Values Compass’ by the celebrated author, Dr Mandeep Rai, as she took the audience on her journey of how the much sought-after publication has now flourished into this intuitive manuscript.

The occasion also celebrated the 550th anniversary of Guru Nanak Dev Ji – the founder of the Sikh religion.

In the most holy presence of the leading figure of Nishkam, Bhai Sahib, Bhai Mohinder Singh OBE KSG - one of Mandeep’s main inspirations for writing the book - it proved a hugely memorable occasion as specially invited guests, which included His Royal Highness King Nene Tetteh Ayiku Abordonu IV of Ghana, amongst others, were given incredible insights into the essence and importance of values.

The evening was further uplifted by an inspirational address from HRH Nene whose very presence there created an ambiance in the room that was immeasurable – especially from the moment Dr Mandeep entered the room alongside Bhai Sahib and the Ghanaian Royal.

Following an introduction by Centre Director, Amrick Singh, Dr Mandeep Rai delved straight into her journey, outlining her educational and spiritual background: “When I got the chance to study, I studied Politics, plus Philosophy & Economics because I was keen to know how the world work”, she said. “And; why does injustices happening”?

“The aim of the book”, Mandeep said, “is to highlight things that you admire are your values.

She outlined her biggest supports, inspirations and how every moment could simply be a coincidence, or a pivotal point in one’s life.

“I spent a year in India as a BBC reporter…I was reporting on the deep injustices… I went to pick up some rice, and I saw another hand coming to pick up the rice and I looked up and I saw Bhai Sahib Ji. This was the first time I met Bhai Sahib Ji, even though we were both from Birmingham, this was 17 years ago…so we got talking and they really ignited a fire, and really brought context to all of these values I was seeing across the world.”

Introducing HRH Nene Tetteh Ayiku Abordonu IV, Mandeep said: “Here we have a leader from Ghana…the value from Ghana is ‘Hope’ in the book…and the first thing I noticed as I greeted them were the beads they are wearing on their wrists, and these beads represent things like hope or fertility, and basically every change or transition you have in your life are represented by these beads. So these beads have such significance, just like the Sikh Kara we wear on our wrist.”

“It’s a great honour to be here to reflect on this launch”, a Humble King Nene said.

“My African experience teaches us that we have everything – but have nothing.

“We can take faith for real value and address it on an international value.

“The world today has to address its real values”.

Words which reflected Bhai Sahib’s earlier outline on the essence of values.

“All 200 people sitting here are divine sparks of the almighty… the soul is the most important ingredient.

I believe when you hear the saying ‘Let There Be Light’, you can kindle this divine spark with values, you can ignite the soul with love and forgiveness, otherwise it slumbers”.

“The things that you admire most are your values”, Mandeep said.

I

n 2018 Adam Islam started to experience medical issues with his left leg - as a result of problems with his femoral bone which he’d experienced since a child - which led to a number of serious operations on his left leg.

Due to begin a Digital Media Technology degree course at the School of Computing and Digital Technology, Birmingham City University in September 2018, the 19-year-old from Hodge Hill in East Birmingham was forced to make the tough decision to defer his place for a year – as his friends went off to start their first years.

Then, in March 2019, after further complications, Adam heartbreakingly had to have his left leg amputated.

Following surgery at the city’s Royal Orthopaedic Hospital, he faced weeks of phantom limb pain and months of rehabilitation. He set himself a goal: to walk into university for his very first day in September 2019.

deep thought and consideration, and driven by a desire to ‘stop recovering and start living’, he came to terms with his situation and made the very hard decision to make the journey for his first day - in a wheelchair.

“When I finally joined, I was extremely anxious and nervous. I was scared that people would judge me and stare. In the end, I hadn’t needed to worry as staff and students were absolutely amazing from the moment I arrived at the university.”

Within weeks, buoyed by a new sense of confidence brought on by the positive experience from starting his degree course, Adam approached the University’s Rock Climbing Society about joining.

“My family were a little worried when they found out, they thought it was very dangerous. But I needed a challenge; I needed to prove to myself that even with one leg I could still accomplish anything. Being a member of the BCU Rock Climbing Society has really helped with that After university, Adam hopes to eventually take up a career working

in media, focussing on graphic design and film, using his new found confidence, experience and skills to move forward.

“I generally feel a lot more positive about myself and my situation now. I don’t see myself having any disadvantages compared to anyone else because I’m in a wheelchair with surgery coming up, it all comes down to dedication and motivation.

“Being different in today’s world is hard. I have had to make some difficult decisions in my life. I dreamed of new heights, of expressing myself and talking about my journey.

“It seemed impossible. BCU helped me find my confidence. They gave me a new lease of life. Now I get to direct my own story.”

Adam’s story forms part of Birmingham City University’s ‘I AM BCU’ campaign in which students discuss their personal journeys into higher education and how these have transformed their confidence, pride and sense of belonging.

Councillor urges sign up to free Careers event Sandwell Council is hosting a huge careers event at Sandwell Council House in Oldbury on Tuesday 4 February.

The event, part of the Government’s National Apprenticeships Week (Monday 3 to Friday 7 February), will have a special focus on apprenticeships.

Councillor Danny Millard, cabinet member for skills and employment said: “I want as many people as possible to attend the event, find out about apprenticeships and meet our fantastic apprentices.

Birmingham City University launches ‘ground-breaking’ course A ‘ground-breaking’ new partnership will allow physical training instructors from the armed forces to collect an academic award alongside their military qualifications.

Birmingham City University (BCU) has joined forces with the Joint Service School of Exercise Rehabilitation Instructors (JSSERI), part of the Defence Medical Academy Training Wing, to launch the first accredited Defence Exercise Rehabilitation Instructors course.

The partnership is the first time a course of its type has been launched anywhere in the world, allowing graduates to pick up accolades from both BCU and their arm of the

military.

Physical Training Instructors from the Royal Navy, Royal Marines, British Army and Royal Air Force who pass the aptitude assessment for the 30-week course will attend DMRC and will also enrol as a student at the University.

The course will be delivered at the Defence Medical Rehabilitation Centre in Stanford Hall, near Loughborough.

DMRC by JSSERI tutors who will be supported by University staff.

On successful completion of the course, graduates will be awarded an Advanced Diploma in Defence Exercise Rehabilitation at Level 6.

EDUCATION, TRAINING AND RECRUITMENT Universities call to keep European research links post Brexit As the UK has now left the European Union, 36 higher education groups have called for a "swift agreement" to allow UK universities to rejoin EU research networks and Erasmus student exchanges.

The UK could pay to join these schemes as associate members.

The CBI business group backed the statement, as did Universities UK. The statement, issued by representatives of university, research and science groups across Europe, says it would be of "clear mutual benefit" for UK universities to have "full association" with European research projects.

In response, the Department for Business, Energy and Industrial Strategy, said it is "open to collaborating" in EU programmes, "if it's in the UK's interests".

Universities in the UK have been leading partners - and among the biggest financial beneficiaries - of research funded on a European basis, including major science projects.

In Seven Days (2010) and Encounters (2018) was designed to draw on Nicola’s experiences observing and shadowing the world’s pre-eminent religious leaders, including Pope Francis, the Dalai Lama, Bhai Sahib, Bhai (Dr) Mohinder Singh Ji OBE KSG,

Desmond Tutu.

The exhibition also included two bodies of work the artist created during her remarkable access to President Barack Obama during his 2008 presidential campaign.

To create this work Nicola spent 10 years travelling the world attending interfaith meetings, from intimate private meetings, to global summits where she

met leaders of the world’s major faiths.

In both The Encounter and The Light Series showcased the rich diversity and inclusivity of the faiths represented. These included: • 12 Christians (4 Anglican, 3 Orthodox, 3 Catholic, 1 Assyrian, 1 Coptic) • 5 Muslims (2 Sunni, 2 Shi’a, 1 Sufi) • 4 Hindus (1 Sri Vaishnava Sampradaya, 1 Lingayat, 1 Dvaita, 1 Ramakrishna) • 4 Jews (2 Orthodox, 1 Sephardic Orthodox, 1 Reform) • 2 Buddhists (1 Tibetan, 1 Fo Guang Shang Humanist) • 2 African Traditional (1 Ifa and Yoruba, 1 Benin Kingdom) • 1 Baha’i • 1 Confucian • 1 Jain • 1 Sikh • 1 Shinto • 1 Zoroastrian The Light Series included portraits painted on Giclée (a fine art digital printing process combining pigment based inks with high-quality archival quality paper to achieve an inkjet print of superior archival quality, light fastness and stability) with hand applied 24k gold, silver copper leaf and diamond dust.

It has been suggested by visitors that this is the first artwork in history to depict all the world’s major religions together in a shared space, and of equal status.

Speaking on the exhibition Nicola Green commented, “My intention with Encounters is to

reach people of all faiths (and none) in particular those that don’t often see themselves represented.

“I was really delighted to see how the work resonated with everyone and to hear stories from people that were so excited to see themselves or their faith portrayed in the artworks.”

Jyotveer Singh, Head of Web Development at Saïd Business School and attendee of the exhibition said: “The exhibition is a celebration of interfaith solidarity and cross-cultural dialogue.

“Saïd Business School is a global village of diverse communities who come together to solve world-scale problems which I feel is reflected in the art.

“Nicola Green creatively demonstrates a rich tapestry of interdependent people, practicing shared values for the good of others; whilst honouring uniqueness and the dignity of difference.

“I was deeply inspired to see international interfaith ambassador, Bhai Sahib Bhai Mohinder Singh Ji depicted in the artwork, who continues to drive the agenda of peace and unity through projects. Namely, the Peace Charter (Charter for Forgiveness and Reconciliation) and the Museum of World’s Religions, this work by Nicola Green is most welcome and timely.”

The exhibition is available to the public at Saïd Business School, University of Oxford until 20th December.

Now ready to make massive waves in Glasgow, the player joins the Ibrox club as the first Indian to play top class professional woman’s football in Britain.

In what is a groundbreaking move, the 29-year-old much soughtafter striker has signed an 18-month contract from Manipur Police Sports Club in her native country.

Devi, who has scored more than 100 domestic goals, and who is India’s first professional female footballer, managed to see the deal go through after it was facilitated by Rangers' partnership with Indian Super League side Bengaluru FC. i r m i n g h a m Hippodrome is putting young people firmly centre stage with two upcoming showstopping musicals; Flower Cutters (17 & 18 April) performed by Birmingham Hippodrome’s Musicals Young Company and Groove on Down the Road (18 & 19 July) performed by ZooNation Young Company Birmingham.

Flower Cutters is a brand-new musical by Josh Bird & Rachel Bellman that is in development with Perfect Pitch, a not-forprofit theatre company dedicated to the creation, development and promotion of new British musicals, run by the producers of the Olivier Award nominated hit musical SIX. This April will mark a regional premiere as the auditioned group of 19 people aged 16 – 24 from Birmingham Hippodrome’s

Musicals Young Company will be the first to perform this exciting new work in the Midlands.

The young company was created

by Birmingham Hippodrome in order to provide a platform for talented young performers from Birmingham and the West Midlands to work with industry professionals to hone their skills and to explore and develop new work.

In July, ZooNation Young Company Birmingham (ZYCBrum) present Groove on Down the Road, ZooNation: The Kate Prince Company's reimagining of the well-loved story, The Wizard of Oz. The first ZooNation young company outside London, ZYCBrum is made up of 18 of the most talented young Hip Hop dancers in the city aged between 11 and 20.

Led by Artistic Director, Rhimes Lecointe, the company

train weekly at their base of Birmingham Hippodrome in foundations and Hip-Hop styles, learn from guest teachers and present new work at the Hippodrome and beyond.

Sting To Bring My Songs Tour To LONDON The Stranglers final full UK tour to include Birmingham One of the UK’s most exciting, credible and influential British groups, The Stranglers have announced an extensive full production UK tour in October and November 2020 and have confirmed that this will be the last time they intend to play together in this way.

The band have stated that this will be their final extensive tour of the UK and whilst they may not be checking out completely just yet this will be the last opportunity to see them playing together in a comprehensive touring format.

The band promise a set that will be covering tracks from their

extensive catalogue spanning over 45 years.

“The Pursuit of Happyness” Author Delivers Powerful Message in Sharjah, UAE

hris Gardner is an entrepreneur, international bestselling author and award-winning film producer.

Gardner’s autobiography, The Pursuit of Happyness became a New York Times #1 best seller, has been translated into over forty languages, including six dialects of Chinese and Gardner is also the inspiration for the critically acclaimed film “The Pursuit of Happyness” for which Will Smith received the Golden Globe, Screen Actors Guild and Academy Award nominations for his performance.

Gardner’s second book, “Start Where You Are” also a best seller was published in 2009.

Chris is currently finishing his newest book “Happyness 2.0 The Blueprint” Furthermore, Gardner has recently won a Peabody Award for producing “And Still I Rise,” a documentary about the life of his dear friend and mentor Dr. Maya Angelou.

As part of the #Arabic Book Fair held in Sharjah to celebrate the World Book Capital, Chris Gardner, participated in a panel discussion on his career The session, which was moderated

by Richard Dean, dealt with Gardner's life story from his cruel childhood, his suffering as a single father who lived with his son homeless for more than a year, and the radical transformations in his life that sparked his spirit of challenge, leading to his bestselling book and his role as an inspiring international speaker.

Possessing the build of a body builder and the voice of a baritone singer, Gardner began his speech by expressing his delight at visiting Sharjah, which he described as a 'place of peace', recalling the atmosphere of his

book, which was transformed into a movie of the same name in 2006, and starred American actor Will Smith, "For me, it was important to have a certain degree of credibility in my story," Gardner said of why he devoted the most chapters to the story of his suffering and the difficult circumstances he faced during his career. "My friend, the late American writer and poet, Maya Angelo, told me:" I feel that this book does not talk about you alone, but it talks about all of us.

“When you have the courage to talk about the difficulties you have overcome, you are contributing to changing people's lives forever, although you will never meet many of them in your life, so I was determined to be honest through this book in every way.”

Gardner also says. ‘When I wake up, I look at the sky and say “Thank You God”.

Because whether the sky is blue or grey, to wake up and to be at this point in my life, where I can work and do what I love to do.

That’s an absolute blessing.’

In his second book, “Start Where You Are, Gardner echoes this sentiment when he says, ‘Whenever I’m asked what happiness is to me, my first answer is that it’s the ability to look at where I am in the moment, wherever I am, to remember where I came from and how far I’ve travelled, as a father, a friend, a contributing citizen of the world, and to be able to say, “What a beautiful life this is”, I’m so grateful to be here. More than anything, happiness is being able to appreciate everything When asked about why he spells Happyness with a Y. Gardner said, as struggling single parent, he saw the word ‘happiness’ misspelt as ‘happyness’ in his son’s daycare centre. “I saw that ‘y’ at a

time… when I needed to smile.

It lightened the load and has ever since. The ‘y’ is also there to represent you and yours when it comes to defining and pursuing what it is in your terms, and what success, growth, fulfilment and enlightenment mean to you for this life — the only life you’ve got,’ In his first book, The Pursuit of Happyness, Gardner had shared lessons of self-empowerment, and how to beat the odds, his second book, Start Where You Are (2009), motivates others to claim

I will point to three people who exemplify this idea — Michael Jordan won six NBA championship rings because he was committed to Plan A, not Plan B. If it worked for those people, and worked for me, it could work for you.

Gardner mentioned how the global financial crisis of 2008 changed the way the youth look at the world today. ‘You know my film The Pursuit of Happyness was released in December 2006. In January 2007, the US economy was going through a recession and spring 2008 was officially acknowledged as the beginning of the global financial crisis.

Gardner, solemnly states that “All the young people who went to college in 2008, saying “Yes We Can”, graduated in 2012, saying, “Wait a minute, what really happened? I did everything I was told to do. I went to school, I graduated and I got good grades. Now I have $100,000 as student loans debt and think I have no opportunity, and I have to move back with my parents hoping that they didn’t lose their house in the subprime

Gardner says his greatest achievement in life was being able to put a roof over his son’s head, a sentiment portrayed in the film.

He tells readers to begin wherever they are in life and capitalise on what they have in hand while building towards bigger goals and ambitions.

During the conversation, gave numerous nuggets of advice, while referencing book, which talks of having a Plan A with positivity, courage, tenacity, discipline and common sense. ‘This is what worked for me, a commitment to plan A, says Gardner, who talks about what a plan should contain.

Gardner emphasised the importance of having plan that must be clear, concise, compelling, consistent and committed or what he calls the

fiasco”.

“Now when I talk to their younger brothers and sisters, they have seen how things did not work out for their older siblings.

The world has forced them to look at things very differently and they are more focused on not having but being and becoming.

This is a whole different mindset we are dealing with, but Gardner emphasises that the greatest gift is the permission to dream.

I tell people that you can be

anything you want. Money is important but never confuse your net worth with your self-worth.’

His parting thoughts are simple.

‘You got to do what you are truly passionate about. It can’t just be about I want to make money.

Everyone wants to make money. It has to be the thing that gets you up in the morning, and the sun cannot come up sooner for you to want to do that thing you love.”

Yeah! I’ve literally just got back off the road with UB40 in North America so this is a perfect time to be hitting the UK and Ireland!

It’s a great line up also, and as soon as I looked at the line up I said, ‘yeah, I definitely wanna go!’ It’s a line up of great hits.

Nelly, Salt N Pepa, Blu Cantrell – are you excited to have some of the biggest names of the 90’s & 00’s joining you on the tour?

It’s going to be good vibes!

I’ve done a couple of shows with Nelly on several occasions back when he was just coming out so we did the circuit together.

Recently, I think the last shows we did together were in Canada, a couple of dates there.

I just think with the amount of amazing records these guys have got, we’ve got Salt N Pepa, Blu Cantrell. I’m sure there will be a lot of guests coming in and out, it’s just going to be a really, really good night!

If you had to pick one other artist from the line up, who do you think will be the most fun to hit the road with?

I mean, any one of them! I think Mya will be cool in the sense that she’s being doing a lot of dancehall and reggae as of lately, even from before she’s done records with Beenie Man and people like that… but they’re all great!

Your music career has spanned close to three decades, what do you find is your biggest motivation to keep making music and keep performing?

I just do music because I’m really not good at anything else! Honestly, you don’t want to see me kick a ball.

Trust me, it aint pretty!

I’ve a knack for writing great melodies and obviously we did the Sting album, we won a Grammy, three years before that we did ‘Need Your Love’ which was a Top 5 single in America, which made me happy.

I’m still writing songs that have relevancy within Dancehall, and I write for other people also. It’s just a hobby for me, music for me is just like air after a while, and it’s just kind what I do!

I don’t have any aspirations to be any mogul or have riches – I just want to play music and be happy, that’s it.

Throughout your career, you’ve always given back to your hometown community in Jamaica and charity has always been close to your heart – how important do you think it is to give back?

For me, coming from humble beginnings to now being at this level - I played for the Queen’s birthday the other day - when you’re sitting around and

After a while, you realise just how very fortunate you are and I don’t think that was given to me just so I could walk around drinking, partying, and banging chicks, it had to be something greater.

I have to use this platform I have to bring people together to do something amazing. Starting up a hospital for children was what I chose to go behind because it was the only one in the English-speaking Caribbean and I realised for a hospital like that, it would mostly be children and they would be serving in a neighbourhood of about 400500 people a day and those are huge numbers for such a small hospital.

I had the ability to get sponsorship and pull people together and create these massive concerts, we made a lot of money for them.

We were able to build their cardiac wing, and were very instrumental in the building of the CAT lab, and all the equipment. I was in Jamaica just two days ago where we turned over $100,000,000 to Jamaica.

We continue doing stuff like that.

I’m also a brand ambassador for Food For The Poor, which is the 5th largest charity in the US. I do a lot of work with Home Base, which is a charity for the military to combat invisible wounds.

It’s good to be in that position where you can put your celebrity towards something like that. I also do work with Chain Of Hope who do cardiac operations for little babies in third world countries.

After a while, especially where I’m at right now where I’ve done all the partying, it’s time to do something.

Birmingham Cathedral Choir makes music pilgrimage to Scotland Staff and musicians from Birmingham Cathedral will be heading to Scotland as part of the cathedral’s ‘Year of Pilgrimage’ programme of events.

The 26-strong group comprising of choristers, lay clerks and choral scholars will tour Edinburgh, Dunfermline and Dunblane over five days.

The choirs will perform at Dunblane Cathedral, Dunfermline Abbey and St Cuthbert’s Church in Edinburgh before finishing at St Giles’ Cathedral in Edinburgh.

Music will be directed by Birmingham Cathedral’s Head of Music David Hardie and include pieces by Handel, Allegri, Bairstow, Brahms, Bruckner, Grieg, Haydn, Holst and Mozart.

Assistant Head of Music Ashley Wagner will accompany on the organ.

The group will take in the local sights during their tour including Stirling Castle and The Edinburgh Dungeons.

Anna Pitt, Chief Executive at Birmingham Cathedral, said: "I’m delighted that Birmingham

Cathedral is kicking of the ‘Year of Pilgrimage’ with our Cathedral Choirs touring in Scotland.

ull casting is announced for Tartuffe, which opens at Birmingham Repertory Theatre on 20 March.

Originally directed by Birmingham-born Iqbal Khan for the Royal Shakespeare Company (RSC) in 2018, this celebrated version of Moliere’s classic comedy by Anil Gupta and Richard Pinto (The Office, Goodness Gracious Me, The Kumars at No. 42) is revived

by The REP for a Brummie audience.

Set in a Pakistani-Muslim community in Birmingham, Tartuffe tells the story of charismatic chameleon and con man, Tahir Taufiq Arsuf, a religious leader for the 21st Century armed with a Twitter handle and the gift of the gab.

Returning to play the title role (or Tahir Taufiq Arsuf as he is known in this production) is Asif Khan. Asif’s theatre credits include A Kind of People (Royal

Court), The Hypocrite (RSC) and Queen of the Nile (Hull Truck). His TV credits include Diana & I (BBC) and Spooks (Series 10).

The cast also includes Raj Bajaj (Damee Pervaiz) and Simon Nagra (Imran Pervaiz) who both return to the production having been part of the show when it opened at the RSC. New to the production is Anshula Bain (Mariam Pervaiz), Elizabeth Cadwallader (DCI Sarah Wells / Pippa), Natalia Campbell (Amira Pervaiz), Natalie Grady (Darina, the Pervaiz’s cleaner), Clive Hayward (Khalil), Qasim Mahmood (Waqaas), Sakuntala Ramanee (Dadimaa Pervaiz) and Lloyd Thomas (Usman).

Musicians Joelle Barker and Pete Yelding also join the production.

Director, Iqbal Khan, said: “I am excited to be revisiting Tartuffe and bringing it home to the city in which it is set following its successful run in the Swan Theatre at the RSC. I’m a Brummie and born into a Pakistani-Islamic family so the production has always felt like a very personal journey to undertake. I can’t wait to see it on stage at Birmingham Repertory Theatre.”

ondon, the capital of the UK. Our epicentre has given rise to some of the most influential, iconic, most talented music artists in the world.

A hub for fashion, culture, and finance amongst other things, London has a rich history as a birthplace of artists. With all these contributing factors, it’s no surprise London has a high artist turnover.

Franchescia Veronica Byam, AKA, ‘Frankie Staywoke’ hails from London, a Fierce MC who knows what to do with a microphone.

Heavily influenced by spirituality, her music in her own words is "raw, relatable, honest and healing". She transfers what she has learnt to be free on a track.

Her musical career commenced way back in 2010, when she got signed to independent label as a singer.

She was a fragment of a larger group of two other artists.

Spending a year in the studio recording songs and ameliorating their sound, the group swiftly started making waves inside the music industry.

Unfortunately for the group, it started falling apart when one member abruptly departed.

This, in turn, created a domino effect on the rest of the group with it quickly disintegrating.

This took Frankie back to square one, causing her to follow suit.

This, understandably, put her off music for a while.

During her down time from music, Frankie took up modelling.

With her new found career doing splendidly, modelling quickly loomed over any sort of music career for her.

Progressing in mind and soul, Frankie decided to give up the modelling game and track back to music.

"I soon after took up modelling which quickly overshadowed any sort music career.

“I did really well and became somewhat known in the underground fashion world, I thought I would be doing that profession forever!

“But it lasted five or six years before I decided to hang up my heels. I had started to evolve

and change in ways I didn't quite understand, this caused me to lose passion for certain hobbies and interests".

Frankie discovered she was good with words, realising she had the capacity to Rap/MC. She quickly made the dive back into music feet first.

Using Instagram as a platform to project her music back out to the public, she would write verses or whole songs that she’d record on mobile devices.

She gained a lot of attention fast, catching the attention of the right people, her music career took off rapidly.

"Music makes me feel at home, like somewhat of a safe haven. I've always used music as a comfort or relaxation method.

It gets me through rough times, bad moods and happy occasions, I believe everything is better with music. Music is my first love!"

Amongst the attention, the ‘Girls of Grime’ group for female artists were taking note, with them taking Frankie under their wing.

Frankie got introduced to other female artists within the grime scene. Both experienced and fresh, this was a good way for Frankie to network.

Being in and around the scene, opportunities were created organically for the group. Radio sets, interviews and shows came thick and fast, this was just the thing Frankie needed. " I was thrown in at the deep end, somehow, I swam".

With the networking doing its job, Frankie featured on many projects like `Shell’ by Sharon Rose (shouts to Sharon) which included many different artists who featured on GRM Daily.

Back to present day, Frankie is now a part of the infamous, Female Allstars. The group is made up of most of the artists connected to `Girls Of Grime’, the group Frankie was a part of before.

A particular track that made waves in the scene was `The Switch Up’. This featured on SBTV and has gained over 32K views. Initially 13 MCs featured on the track, the collective was whittled down to just 6.

All the Female Allstars are individual artists in their own right. All having solo success, but

still being part of the collective.

"I released a song with `TenDixon’ in October 2019 called `Stay Woke’ which has done great, I’m currently putting an EP together which I hope to drop in early 2020!”

"Right now I am focusing on building up my catalogue of music so I have plenty to release in the near future, while also collating and creating music with other artists any chance I get".

With this in mind, Frankie, would like to take her passion to the big stage. “To be honest, after witnessing my journey over the past two years, I believe absolutely anything can happen".

"I’d like to be on stage headlining shows, but it would be sick to headline my own show!"

Her dream artists to work with are Billie Eilish, Jhene Aiko, J Cole, Eminem and Skepta just to name a few (so if you’re reading lads and lasses...).

Frankie’s personal goals are to be a better version of herself (something a lot of us can relate to).

“To become the best version of me both as a person and artist, to impact others in a positive or healing way, on a wide scale through my music because that's the comfort I found growing up”.

“I believe there is always someone out there who is in need of some guidance or hearing someone else's story, whether you know it or not."

Concurrently, Frankie is building up her catalogue, with plenty to release in the near future, with various collaborations and features in the pipeline, Frankie is definitely an artist to follow, and keep your eyes on!

Taulupe Faletau Kicks Off Motorpoint Conversion Challenge

Welsh rugby star Taulupe Faletau helped launch Motorpoint’s Conversion Challenge in Newport.

The UK’s largest independent car retailer, which is based next to the Newport Retail Park in the city, is celebrating the imminent arrival of the Guinness Six Nations at the start of February by giving rugby fans the unique opportunity to put their kicking skills to test and win a trip to see England v Wales at Twickenham in March.

CES 2020 – Covering The Spectrum Of What’s Next

he show “floor” at CES continues to expand and evolve, gobbling up greater and greater stretches of the city of Las Vegas.

Likewise, the tenor of the event itself also continued to evolve in 2020.

While major manufacturers like Intel pulled out of the show, a new generation of smaller, fresher brands stepped in to keep the show as dramatically chaotic as ever.

Chaotic could definitely describe 2020’s automotive offerings. Centered around the North Hall at the Las Vegas Convention Center, as per usual, many major manufacturers like Ford, Audi, and MercedesBenz chose to have a presence at this year’s show, displaying everything from near-term aftermarket upgrades and stereo equipment to fanciful show cars the likes of which most manufacturers swore off years ago. Even Lamborghini had a

presence at this year’s show.

At the forefront was Mercedes-Benz, which showed off the Vision AVTR concept.

The name is a strong nod to the Avatar film, currently the highest grossing movie of all time with 2.8 billion earned worldwide.

The first of its many planned sequels is still a few years off, but to stay ahead of the curve, Mercedes partnered with James Cameron to create a concept “inspired” by the films.

How so? Well, this is a car supposedly able to read your biometric information, like your heart rate, in a way conceptually similar to how the steeds in Avatar interface with their Na’vi riders in the films.

That’s fun in theory, but far more significant are the sustainability aspects of the vehicle, including a fully recyclable interior and a battery free of heavy metals that’s said to be compostable.

It will show the impact and strength of social capital and help to break the negative issues young people face in their daily lives.

What is needed to accelerate this unique , innovative program and to organically grow this social community idea is a funding package that enables Big Dave’s buddies to establish and flourish, utilising a flow of social funding that would be available for this bespoke young persons program.

As a CIC we can become more resilient in our delivery and be able to maintain and create additional social impact on the community.

To feed and nurture these exciting concepts, the program has to be truly ambitious having innovation and enterprise, the engine that drives this project forward in a competitive, global culture .

By putting young people first , working together as a team , as partners , but most importantly as friends - Big Dave’s buddies can make this happen .

Young people for whatever reason are finding life harder.

The buddy program will help to address some of these social issues as the core principle will be based on respect , respect for themselves and each other.

Big Dave’s CIC - a not for profit company, run by volunteers who share Dave’s vision and passion of improving community cohesion in some of the most challenging areas of the country, is making it possible for young people to play a

positive and active role in providing cohesion for their community.

The program has a long way to go , but building on the success so far, it aims to grow the services/support it can provide through organic growth, external funding and working with partners who share its vision........ everything is possible.

The buddy program will offer support to enable youngsters to develop individual skills, thus strengthening the coping strategies required to deal with issues influencing their daily choices in an interactive society.

The message delivered is to think before you act.

e have been fortunate enough to partner up with 'Big Dave' Gauder to start a new initiative around wellbeing and supporting each other.

Dave has been into school twice now and has shared his own background as holder of 26 strength records in the Guiness Book Of Records and is well known for the pulling and lifting events that he has taken part in.

He has worked on various projects encouraging the building of cross-community relationships and his new

project will encourage pupils to become Big Dave's Buddies, working with others, supporting and upholding each other and focussing on growing a brighter guture for all.

It was also wonderful to be able to welcome Year 5 pupils from our sister school, Ark Kings Academy in Kings Norton, and for our pupils to have an opportunity to get to know children from a very different area of Birmingham.

We look forward to haveing the opportunity to continue to build links with them through the programme.

Les Rutherford

A

WWII veteran who escaped Dunkirk by paddling out to sea on a shed door after being trapped while fighting a rear-guard action during the evacuation of the port, he and a fellow soldier used the door to escape out to sea, where they were picked up by a French trawler.

After being picked up, he said he was given a glass of rum and returned to England wearing only a blanket and socks.

He later joined Bomber Command and served as a bomb aimer in the RAF. During a raid over Germany in 1943, he was shot down and captured and taken to StalagLuft III shortly before the Great Escape in 1944, although he was not part of it.

At the end of the war he was repatriated to the UK. He was 101.

he actor, writer, comedian, screenwriter, film director and historian was a member of the Monty Python comedy team.

After graduating from Oxford University with a degree in English, he and writing partner Michael Palin and fellow Oxford student, wrote and performed for several high-profile British comedy programmes, including Do Not Adjust Your Set and The Frost Report, before creating Monty Python's Flying Circus with Cambridge graduates Eric Idle, John Cleese, Graham Chapman and the American animator/filmmaker Terry Gilliam.

He made his directorial debut with the team's film, Monty Python and the Holy Grail, which he co-directed with Gilliam, and also directed the subsequent Python films Life of Brian and The Meaning of Life.

He also wrote an early draft of Jim Henson's 1986 film Labyrinth, though little of his work remained in the final cut. Jones was a well-respected medieval historian, having written several books and presented television documentaries about the period, as well as a prolific children's book author.

In 2016, Jones received a Lifetime Achievement award at the BAFTA Cymru Awards for his outstanding contribution to television and film.

After living for several years with a degenerative aphasia, he gradually lost the ability to speak and died from frontotemporal dementia.

Holocaust Liberation Commemorated at Anniversary Memorial Day The Lord Mayor of Birmingham led the city’s Holocaust Memorial Day commemorations at the Council House to commemorate the victims and survivors of the Holocaust and Nazi persecutions, as well as other genocides around the world.

This year marks the 75th anniversary of the liberation of Auschwitz and the 25th anniversary of the genocide in Bosnia.

The theme for this year’s event was ‘Stand Together’, which explores how genocidal regimes throughout history have fractured societies by marginalising certain groups, how these tactics can be challenged by individuals standing together with their neighbours and speaking out against oppression.

Councillor John Cotton, Cabinet Member for Social Inclusion, Community Safety and Equalities at Birmingham City Council, hosted the ceremony, where all are welcomed and admission was free.

The programme featured

testimony from Mindu Hornick, who talked about her experiences as a Holocaust survivor, along with music and prayers – including performances from Simone Schehtman, Kirsty Robinson, the Kol Kinor Choir and Young Poet Laureate Aliyah Begum.

Students from Bordesley Green Girls School reflected on what Holocaust Memorial Day meant to them.

The Lord Mayor of Birmingham, Cllr Mohammed Azim, said: “Holocaust Memorial Day was an opportunity for everyone to pause, reflect and learn lessons from the past and apply them to the present day, to create a safer, better future.

“I was privileged to have this chance to light a candle for the victims of all atrocities and genocides around the world, as well as those who are still sadly losing their lives through war, conflict and hate crime. I was glad that as many people as possible joined me in this act of remembrance.”

Nishkam Centre Reaffirms Its Commitment To Prestigious Standard

t the last Nishkam Civic Association Board Meeting of 2019 the Chairman and Board were presented with a prestigious certificate.

The Nishkam Centre had been put through its paces by an assessor from Investing in Volunteers (IiV) who tested the organisation against nine indicators to confirm continued adherance to the IiV Standard.

The Centre provides innovative support via group work activities that is creative, responsive and sensitive to the needs of many diverse communities.

The ethos of the Nishkam Centre is based upon a framework which provides a pathway to community integration, empowerment, involvement and cohesion.

As Nishkam means ‘selfless service’ the undepinning and cutting-edge differentiator is voluntary service.

The Centre provides many services to enable civic engagement and involvement.

These services incorporate builtin progressions, enabling clients to improve coping strategies and work towards sustainable mental health recovery, increasing social networks and opportunities for training, volunteering, employment and community integration.

The Investing in Volunteers website states, ‘Investing in Volunteers (IiV) is the UK quality standard for good practice in volunteer management.

The benefits of doing so are claimed to be; ‘enhancing volunteers’ experience and increasing their motivation; strengthen the organisational reputation and encourage more people to volunteer; minimises risk, maintains knowledge, and plans for the future.’

our organisations’ cutting-edge.

from a variety of training, gained a sense of community spirit and involvement, feeling of having made a difference to someone’s life, made friends and had an overall improvement in their health and wellbeing.

THE FUNERAL OF LEE MCDONALD

Thousands Turn Out For Legend ‘King Lee’

he tragic death of Lerel – Lee – McDonald “encompassed a united community”, as was said by Officiating Minister, Bishop Dr Derek Webley, as a packed New Testament Church of God Handsworth paid homage to “a true soldier of perpetual bravery”. That came from resident Senior Pastor, Bishop Deverton Douglas.

And that would prove to be just the start of an overwhelming line of tributes that would be paid to ‘a man of the people’ and ‘soul of the community’.

As W.A.W.I. (Why Are West Indians) Standard flag-bearers and a military piper led the former soldier into a hugely solemn and emotional church, it proved to be too much for too many – family, former colleagues and friends – as the loss of a true friend, to all who knew him, really began to sink in.

Always dressed to impress – no matter what, or where, the occasion – the vast numbers who turned up was testament of exactly

what he meant to those who knew him.

“His life left so many memories that were too beautiful to forget”, said cousin, Sonia Powell.

Serving in the Royal Fusiliers (from 1964 – 1974) and being stationed in places that include Borneo, Germany and Northern Ireland, Lee’s outstanding tenure in the forces would keep him in good stead for the life he led on ‘Civvy Street’; Kindness, after all, was his raisin d’etre; “It’s difficult to find the words to describe his importance to me, the family and his community”, said another cousin, Christine. “He was a cheeky fellow who had class.

“Sharp like a blade, when it comes to dress”, she said, “He lived a life that transformed everyone and everything”.

A patriotic Jamaican, Dr Beverly Lindsay OBE OD Vice-Lord Lieutenant of the West Midlands added: “Lee was all about making peace and making people happy.

“He wore a happy mask.

“I wish we could have seen behind his ‘mask’.”

with the family to arrange with The Phoenix Newspaper to cover the funeral, and through the hard work and efforts of former RAF man Donald Campbell, a flag was acquired by Sgt Shiv Chand of the Royal Air Force.

“The Union Jack represents the military, Army, Navy and Air Force, for one of their comrades who represented the nations as a thank you for their service,” explained Mr Campbell.

“The adornment of the flag draped over the coffin, once the funeral had concluded at the graveside, was removed in a ceremonious way, before being presented to Lee’s daughter, Lorna as a keepsake and in remembrance of his service to the nation.”

With scripture reading (1 Thessalonians 4 v 13-18 from cousin Dawn Powell and St John 14 v 1-6 by godson Ryan Allan and the Eulogy read by step-daughter Rachel Allen, the overwhelming number of people who stepped up to share their thoughts of and experiences with Lee McDonald showed just how much of an impact this quiet,

unassuming ‘dapper’ man-abouttown made on all who knew him – and/or knew of him.

“He was a great man” said Lee’s 91-year-old father, Constantine Cargill “and a great son. I really miss him”.

At the graveside, doves were released by his loving daughter Lorna, as everyone raised their eyes to the sky, where Lee was undoubtedly looking down from.

This has to be one of the biggest funerals outside of the Jamaica that the community has ever experienced. Friends and associates going back well into his young childhood were present, which spilled over into

the reception at the H Suite where music, dance, song and excellent food provided by Lick Your Fingers Caribbean takeaway filled the afternoon and night, bringing the road outside to a standstill, even to the Bricklayers Arms nearby, blaring out reggae music in celebration of a man whose legacy will remain in our hearts for a very long time.

Winners of the Phoenix Newspaper Windrush Award 2019, Tasty Pastry also supplied the most delicious tasting patties in Birmingham.

Keep dancing Lee, as the music plays on and on and on.

M

y name is Lorna McDonald daughter of Lerel McDonald aka Lee McDonald, my dad and I were very close.

My dad would describe me as HIS Lorna and most people tell me that I was the apple of his eye. I am like this purely because of the role model he was as my devoted father.

As his only daughter and eldest child it seemed fitting to organise a funeral to represent the person he was honest, unconditionally kind, giving and thoughtful.

The amount of people that turned out was a true reflection of him and I feel so proud that he was my dad.

My wonderful children Gerodine, Lance and James and grandchildren Lamar and Raheem have lost an amazing

grandad & great grandad.

I’m biased because I know my dad was a good, kind man, we’re all a bit biased like that right?

But when you’re accompanied by thousands of people to remember him at his funeral this simply cemented that, he really was such a good man, it was overwhelming.

I need to mention that I could not have done this without my children, my sons father Edwin Salmon, my sisters Rachel and Sophia and my cousins Dawn and Debbie.

With all their hard work made this possible. As for my grandad aged 95, who has outlived his sons and wife, has now lost an amazing son of whom he was extremely proud.

I would also like to share thanks to The Army, Fred Coke Chairman of British

ear Mr Crossgill and Ms McDonald, I am saddened to learn of the untimely passing of Mr Lee McDonald, a dear son and father.

On behalf of the staff of the Jamaican High Commission and Mr Wade Lyn CBE, Honorary Consul and team at the Jamaican Consulate in Birmingham, I convey heartfelt condolences to you and your family.

By all reports, Mr McDonald was a remarkable son of Jamaica and a stalwart of the Jamaican community in Birmingham.

He was well known for his generosity and spirit of goodwill which were demonstrated through his active participation and volunteerism in many community initiatives and activities.

Of particular note, was when he, along with some friends in the community assisted on raising well needed funds to ensure that Mr Lester Kidd, a former Oxford graduate, who fell on hard times could have a decent and dignified funeral.

This was a most noble, humanitarian and well appreciated gesture .

I understand that Mr

McDonald's caring nature ensured that he called a lot of individuals daily, just to see if they were okay.

I am told that he called his this his community surgery.

Mr McDonald’s proud army experience has been of much significance, and many still recall him standing with dignity and great pride, when he and his ex-army and service colleagues served as Flag bearers at Jamaica's 50th anniversary Independence celebrations held in Victoria and Chamberlain Squares in Birmingham in 2012.

The Jamaican community in Birmingham is certainly richer for having known Mr McDonald.

We can well imagine the pain and sadness being experienced by the extended family, colleagues and friends of this community stalwart. May you be comforted by the wonderful memories shared with this special gentleman.

Please be assured that our thoughts and prayers are with you all at this challenging time.

May his soul rest in peace.

Birmingham County FA’s support for those living with dementia

irmingham County Football Association is calling on clubs to open special dementia cafes so that football fans suffering with the disease can meet and share experiences.

This follows on the fact that many professional clubs have taken on the idea – something which the County (Birmingham) FA were looking into themselves following findings of the Field Research Study into the effect of football on ex-professional players.

The findings showed that some 11% (of ex-players) died from dementia.

Support by Birmingham County FA for former players who are diagnosed with dementia has increased over the past year with support for family and friends equally significant during the process.

Following consultations with West Bromwich Albion’s Albion Memories and

Wolverhampton Wanderers’ Molineux Memories, Birmingham County FA have been holding monthly Dementia Café event at their headquarters in Great Barr where people can meet and discuss their football memories and watch old games on screen.

Joe Robins, Birmingham County Fas Football Development Officer, said: “Seeing the mass growth and positive effect of the Dementia Café is fantastic.

“Our goal is to see more professional and grassroots clubs to open their doors and provide similar service for their communities where individuals, families and groups can talk about all thins football.

“Something as small as that can make a big impact on the quality of life for those suffering from dementia whilst providing support and respite to family and friends”.

irmingham’s John Taylor Hospice is aiming to ensure more people can benefit from expert end of life care with its new three-year strategy.

Published in January, ‘Making Every Moment Matter: Our Three-Year Strategic Plan 202023’ sets out ambitious plans for the hospice to provide more care into the future.

Launched during the hospice’s 110th anniversary year, it aims to build on John Taylor’s unique legacy of caring for generations of families.

The strategy had three priorities – consolidating the current business, extending clinical services and maximising income.

Within these streams are a host of aims including extending the communitybased Hospice at Home service so it is available round-the-clock, improving

care for people with dementia and continuing to develop personal health budgets for more people as they approach the end of their lives.

The hospice also plans to open more shops to raise income, to make increased use of technology and to continue to develop partnerships with other organisations.

John Taylor Hospice is working closely with Birmingham and

Solihull Clinical Commissioning Group, Birmingham and Solihull Sustainability and Transformation Partnership and other hospices to ensure end of life services are available for patients when, how and where they need them.

CEO Penny Venables said: “It has been nearly ten years since John Taylor Hospice left the NHS and today we are a charity caring for around 2,000 people each year as well as providing help and support for their family and friends.

“As we begin our 110th anniversary year it is important that we build on John Taylor’s special legacy of care in our plans for moving forward.

When we opened in 1910 we were only able to provide care for a handful of patients – today we are not only supporting hundreds of people but also ensuring their care is specialised and tailored to their needs”.

Public Health and Social Care - Suicide Prevention Strategy

M

any readers of the Phoenix newspaper will know that as Cabinet Member for Health and Social Care I am also responsible for public health.

Public health is a part of local government that came to us relatively recently.

After a great deal of consultation and government legislation public health came across to local government in 2013.

The role of Public Health is to fund interventions that address drug and alcohol misuse; sexually transmitted disease; teenage pregnancy; air quality and physical inactivity these are mandated services.

Devolving these services to local level was a great step forward as it has led to more joined up working with health, housing, education, welfare working together to reduce health inequalities.

During austerity, local government has faced sustained cuts, and these cuts have also impacted on the public health budget.

Investing in prevention is widely recognised as the right thing to do as it delays more costly interventions in Health and Social Care services.

Public Health teams have worked hard to achieve more with less through collaboration and innovation.

There have been concerns with Public health funding over recent years as there was no long term projections and year on year there have been cuts to the service.

Many of the services delivered through the public health grant are mandated services and the cuts were impacting on innovation.

The Local Government Association and many councils are lobbying government to ensure this reduction in funding does not continue especially when the protection around the grant funding is removed in 2021.

At full council on Tuesday 14th January 2020, I presented the Birmingham Suicide Prevention Strategy.

This strategy was co produced by partners from the NHS, voluntary and community, business and academic sectors of the City.

This strategy was presented

to full council following a passionate discussion in the Council Chamber led by Cllr Simon Morrall, myself and many other local councillors in the Chamber.

Many Councillors were passionate about Birmingham adopting a zero tolerance to suicide, and absolutely drove this agenda, ensuring that the issues why people try and succeed to commit suicide do not remain a taboo.

I am incredibly passionate about Mental health issues, and how mental health affects us all and it touches all of our lives in some shape or form.

There are many people who unfortunately contemplate suicide and this strategy sets out our ambition for zero suicide, as part of the wider ambition to become a mentally healthy city.

The key point that the strategy sets out is there is always another option.

Fundamentally we need to ensure that everyone knows and realises that suicide is preventable.

Although in Birmingham the rate of suicide has reduced and is the lowest of the core cities which include Nottingham, Manchester, Leeds etc and is below the England average, we still need to do more.

We must look at what it is that drives someone so close to the very edge of despair that they think there is no way back.

And what support is out there, how is it accessed and is that support right for everyone.

I cannot emphasis enough “Suicide is preventable”. This is such an important statement to make. It is also very easy to say but rarely a simple issue to deal with and leaves a devastating impact on families, friends and communities. In order to reduce the number of people taking their own lives we need to look at why this happens and who are the most at risk.

It is heart-breaking that so many people get to this stage, thinking they have no alternative. So, there are clearly many issues that need to be addressed, and we must address them collaboratively as a city.

The strategy is based on local and national evidence, but we need to work together at every level, in every community,

Here in Birmingham, in addition to nationally recognised high-risk groups, we have a higher rate of suicide among people in skilled trades such as construction, and also among people from Poland and other eastern European countries.

The City has partnered with the city of Warsaw in Poland to share learning and collaborate on addressing suicide prevention in Polish communities.

There are many actions that we can take, such as looking at the mental health of all these high-risk groups as well as focusing on children and young people and how they develop poor mental health.

We need to raise awareness with staff working in areas where people are more likely to take their own lives: traffic wardens, park wardens, and reduce the risk of medication stockpiling.

Driving this work locally we have established the Birmingham Suicide Prevention Working Group, a multi-agency forum, that reports into the Creating a Mentally Healthy City Forum who will oversee delivery of the Strategy.

Underpinning this we have shared Suicide Prevention Action Plan, drawn up by the working group which includes Network Rail, Birmingham & Solihull Women’s Aid, NHS Birmingham & Solihull Clinical Commissioning Group, and Common Unity.

We need to focus on Prevention and early intervention working in partnership to co-produce the best possible outcomes using the strengths and assets of people, communities and our local areas.

It is almost always more effective to work upstream and aim to prevent suicide deaths occurring in the first place.

Vamos Theatre, the UK’s leading mask theatre company based in Worcester, have set up their own tree grove in the Scottish Highlands to help offset the carbon emissions from their forthcoming UK premiere tour of their new production ‘Dead Good’.

Working with conservation charity Trees for Life, the trees will help to rewild the Caledonian Forest, a rich habitat found only in the Scottish Highlands and will include saplings from locally collected seeds including Scots pine willow, birch, hazel and alder.

The saplings will be planted alongside other young, native trees, transforming open hillsides into healthy young woodland, rich in wildlife such as red squirrel, black grouse, capercaillie, wood ants and twinflower.

Once the trees reach maturity, natural regeneration will go on to create the wild forests of the future for generations to enjoy.

Rachael Savage, Artistic Director of Vamos Theatre said “This particular project is something we are doing whilst we work on more long-term sustainability for the company.

This isn’t a quick solution, we are fully aware trees take up to 20 years to mature but this is a positive springboard for us, we have to start somewhere. This interim move invests in a better future and supports invaluable reforestation in the Scottish Highlands.”

he Jamaican Robotics team have won the prestigious Kathryn Johnson Award, for best documentation at the FIRST Global Challenge robotics event, held at the Coca Cola Arena in Dubai.

The three-day competition featured more than 1,500 pupils from 191 countries, all vying for one of many awards.

The winning he UJAA sponsored team consisted of students from Alpha Academy, Immaculate Conception High School, Jamaica College, St George’s College, and St Jago High School.

According to the UJAA press release, the participation of Team Jamaica Robotics is a project that’s been adopted and sponsored by the Union of Jamaican Alumni Associations (USA), Inc (UJAA)in partnership with the 54 member associations in the north-east USA. The UJAA, press release said, it’s been responsible for organising, coordinating and managing the project, as well as interfacing with FIRST Global.

Additionally, Jamaica's Ministry of Education, Youth and Information provided substantial resources to assist

with travel and housing, which enabled three additional students from Calabar, Immaculate and St Jago to travel as volunteer mentors.

The Jamaican team first competed at the inaugural tournament in Washington DC in 2017 and ranked 45th among more than 150 teams. In 2018 the team finished 15th out of over 150 teams.

The ecstatic team celebrated their success at the impressive Emirates Grand Hotel, in Dubai.

Keynote congratulatory speeches were given by the chair of UJAA Lesleyanne, Samuels, UAE event co-ordinators, Samuel Vernon, Nigel Hinds, Marcia Clarke who unanimously praised the Jamaican team for their outstanding success, while Daron Williams, gave a range of celebratory gifts, to the team.

Once the formalities had been completed, appetites satisfied, everyone danced to the effervescent sound of Jamaican music played by the UAE’s top D.J. Sir Lennox, who fired up the crowd, in a way that made the night, feel like a home from home.

The success of this Jamaican Robotics Team, indicates, that Jamaica, is more than, Reggae, Rice and Peas and Usain, Bolt.

Jamaican and can proudly add technology to its growing list of accolades and successes.

Egypt and Ethiopia near agreement on River Nile dam Ethiopia and Egypt say they have reached an agreement on a key aspect of the vast dam that Ethiopia is building on the River Nile.

There have long been fears that The Grand Ethiopian Renaissance Dam - Africa's biggest hydroelectric project - due to begin operation later this year, could spark a war, with downstream states Egypt and Sudan afraid it will reduce their water supplies.

Few details have emerged from the latest round of talks in Washington, but both Ethiopia and Egypt said that basic agreement had been reached on the filling process.

Egypt has long pressed for the dam to be filled gradually over several years in order not jeopardise the water flow vital to its economy.

A statement said that the final agreement could be signed any time soon.

At the centre of the dispute are plans to fill up the mega dam as Egypt fears the project will allow Ethiopia to control the flow of Africa's longest river.

Ethiopia wants to do it in six years.

HE Dherar Belhoul Al Falasi stressed that the Secretariat General of the Arab League, represented by the Council of Arab Information Ministers, is closely coordinating with DPC to organise a grand celebration.

HE Belhoul added that the UAE has launched several media initiatives aimed at developing the media industry and stimulating creativity and excellence in its various sectors.

US restricts immigration from Nigeria The United States government is expanding its curbs on immigration to include six more countries, including Nigeria, Africa's most populous nation.

Citizens from Nigeria, Eritrea, Sudan, Tanzania, Kyrgyzstan and Myanmar will now be blocked from obtaining certain types of visas.

People from those countries will still be able to visit the US as tourists.

In 2018 the US issued twice as many immigration visas to Nigeria than to the other five nations combined.

An official said the new measures were the result of failures by the six countries to meet US security and information-sharing standards.

"These countries, for the most part, want to be helpful but for a variety of different reasons simply failed to meet those minimum requirements that we laid out," acting Homeland Security Secretary Chad Wolf told reporters on Friday.

He said officials would work with the countries on bolstering their security requirements to help them get off the list.

US President Donald Trump first introduced a travel ban in 2017.

he Maldives was proudly named by UK and Middle Eastern holidaymakers as 'Favourite Holiday Destination in the World' at the 13th Ultimate Luxury Travel Related Awards (ULTRAs) gala, which took place at the Emerald Palace Kempinski Hotel in Dubai on Monday 27th January 2020.

Since September 2019, the readers of the UK and Middle East editions of The Telegraph's Ultratravel magazine and Black Card holders from the DISCOVERY loyalty programme operated by the Global Hotel Alliance, have been voting for their favourite travel suppliers and destinations in the world.

The Maldives, which is made up of 1,192 islands in the Indian Ocean, is traditionally known for its high-end resort accommodation popular with honeymooners.

However this year will see a stronger focus by the destination on the diverse range of activities available to tourists such as beach volleyball, badminton and surfing, as well as the rich culture of the inhabited islands that surround the destination's resorts.

Caribbean Tourism And Health Authorities Proactive On Coronavirus

N

o cases of the coronavirus have been reported in the Caribbean, assured regional tourism and health officials, who are hard at work aiming to keep the region coronavirus-free.

A partnership established five years ago between the Caribbean Public Health Agency (CARPHA) and the private sector-led Caribbean Hotel and Tourism Association (CHTA) as well as the public sector Caribbean Tourism Organization (CTO) is helping to drive a concerted effort by the region's health and tourism stakeholders to help prevent and mitigate any impact from the spread of the virus, which has been declared by the World Health Organization (WHO) as a global public health emergency of international concern.

The three organizations quickly mobilized over a week

ago, with CARPHA playing a key role in gathering facts and preparing briefs and tools for the region's largest industry, tourism, based upon its consultations with global health authorities, including WHO and the U.S. Centers for Disease Control and Prevention.

"We see CARPHA as a key intermediary between global and local health authorities in brokering information and sharing intelligence essential to monitoring the situation with the Novel Coronavirus and preventing its spread into our region.

“This is important to the health of our residents and visitors and also important to the Caribbean's economic well-being, as tourism is the region's most important contributor to employment and revenue," stated CARPHA's Executive Director Dr. Joy St. John.

"CARPHA is recommending

airlift for UK travellers with the launch of a new five-times-weekly flight from London Heathrow to Malé via Bahrain with Gulf Air, making the destination even more accessible for British holidaymakers.

The island nation remains one of the UK's most popular holiday destinations, with a total of 126,199 UK holidaymakers visiting in 2019. This represents an impressive 10.1% year-onyear increase in UK arrivals.

The UK holds the fifth market ranking on tourist arrivals by nationality, firmly holding 7.4% of the total market share and steadily increasing year-on-year.

Commonwealth law ministers have unanimously resolved to remove barriers to access to justice in their respective countries, and to deliver Sustainable Development Goal 16 on peace, justice and strong institutions by 2030.

The biennial Commonwealth Law Ministers Meeting concluded with a set of proposed actions to be taken at the national and Commonwealth level.

Ministers agreed to address the justice needs of vulnerable persons, including by expanding specialised justice services and targeting root causes of legal problems.

Commonwealth SecretaryGeneral Patricia Scotland said: “The Commonwealth Law Ministers Meeting is a powerful platform for mutual support and collaborative action to help all our member countries deliver on the values of our Commonwealth

Charter, and towards achieving the Sustainable Development Goals.

“The active circulation of ideas and solutions amongst such a diverse group of nations, and the resultant outcomes, are all testament to the value of the Commonwealth and its networks in supporting good governance and the rule of law.”

Minister of Justice and Prison Reforms of Sri Lanka Thalatha Atukorale, who chaired the sessions, said: “Equal access to justice is integral to achieving the Sustainable Development Goals, and fundamental to defending human rights and democracy.

“However, new challenges require a trans-national and trans-institutional effort with international coordinated action. In this context, the Commonwealth is one of the most suitable platforms to work together on the same mission.”

Ministers considered a

major study on international commercial arbitration in the Commonwealth. They agreed this method of resolving crossborder disputes could be especially helpful for small and medium-sized enterprises.

Countries were encouraged to consider signing the New York Convention on international commercial arbitration and adopt compatible national laws.

Ministers also welcomed a package of anti-corruption benchmarks, drafted by the Secretariat, designed to help governments and public sector bodies measure their anticorruption activities, and make improvements if needed.

The benchmarks cover 25 areas, including corruption offences and public procurement.

They will be submitted for final approval to Commonwealth Heads of Government at their biennial meeting in June 2020.

T New CEO appointed for Nevis Tourism Authority The Nevis Tourism Authority (NTA) has a new CEO. The NTA Board of Directors conducted an exhaustive review of more than 40 applicants.

These 40+ applicants were shortlisted based on their knowledge of the destination, background in tourism, industry experience and qualifications.

The board conducted extensive interviews with the finalists who focused on their vision to grow the destination, relevant and creative traditional and digital marketing strategies, proposals for engaging domestic and international stakeholders, human resource competencies and the ability to manage limited resources.

Ms. Jadine Yarde has been selected as the new head of the NTA. She is an American born, and has Barbadian and Grenadian citizenship.

She has also lived in the major US cities of Boston and New York for the majority of her life, before moving to Barbados and

working in tourism, marketing and entertainment and later as a consultant in both Barbados and Grenada.

She has worked with the Barbados Tourism Marketing Inc and has been involved in the development of Limitless Concierge Service, which is a Barbadian and Grenadian based concierge service.

This has allowed her to immerse in the Caribbean lifestyle while understanding the traditional tourist and their needs and wants.

With over 10 years of experience in marketing, tourism and entertainment, Ms. Yarde, who holds a BSc in Marketing, brings to the table a creative vision for the future of Nevis’ tourism industry, an analytic tourism outlook, a strong digital marketing mindset and clear understanding of how important a business’ digital footprint is.

Jadine Yarde assumed office effectively on February 1.

urkish Airlines, the airline that flies to more countries than any other carrier, has today announced that it will be operating direct flights from Birmingham to Antalya, starting on 3rd June 2020, with return fares starting from £216.00 for all inclusive.

Flights will depart from Birmingham and will be operated twice a week on Wednesdays and Saturdays.

Rents on the up as housing market growth remains subdued by Brexit

8% of private renters in the West Midlands – equivalent to 566,000 thousand adults – would like to make small improvements to their home, new research from Shelter and B&Q shows.

Given more people now rent privately right across the country, including over 1.5 million families, the YouGov study for Shelter and its partner B&Q, shines a light on the important relationship between our wellbeing and the place we call home.

With renters in the West Midlands wanting to make a combined total of over 1.5 million home improvements, it also challenges the idea that renters are not interested in putting down roots.

A staggering 68% of private renters across the region, the equivalent of 497,000 people, said they would feel happier in their home if they could decorate

it as they wished, highlighting the positive impact small home improvements can have on mental health.

And 27% said they would be more likely to invite family and friends over if they could add personal touches to their home.

However, before personalising their rented pads, both Shelter and B&Q are keen to stress that private tenants must seek the permission of their landlord first.

Many landlords do allow tenants to make small changes, in fact 47% of renters in the West Midlands say they already know their landlord permits small improvements and more may do so if asked.

The findings support the ongoing national partnership between Shelter and B&Q, who are working together because of a shared belief that everyone should feel happy and safe in their home.

donations, Shelter’s DIY Skills Adviser Service provides practical help and basic DIY training to people who are struggling with bad housing or settling into a new home after being homeless.

Covering London, Birmingham, Manchester, Sheffield, Merseyside, Dorset and Bristol, Shelter’s team of trained home improvement specialists have helped over 2,500 people, with tasks ranging from decorating to gardening, since the partnership launched in 2017.

Polly Neate, Chief Executive of Shelter, said: “Every day our team of specialist DIY skills advisers see the difference that even modest home improvements can have on people’s happiness levels. So, it’s not surprising to us that so many private tenants in the West Midlands want to make their rental feel more homely.

“It might not seem like a big deal, but something as small as a

fresh lick of paint really does go a long way towards helping families who’ve experienced bad housing or homelessness to feel settled in a new place.

“With B&Q’s ongoing support, we can continue to provide handson help and basic DIY training to even more people – equipping them with the confidence and skills to create a home where they feel happy and safe.”

Interim CEO appointed to lead UK Athletics

UK Athletics has announced the appointment of Nic Coward as Interim CEO. Coward, who has extensive sport leadership experience, will lead the National Governing Body until such time as a permanent appointment is made through the ongoing CEO recruitment process.

As former General Secretary of the Premier League and CEO of the British Horseracing Authority, as well as twice acting CEO of the Football Association, he has considerable experience navigating the complexity of international and domestic stakeholders within the sporting landscape.

In recent years he has been a director and consultant in sport and other sectors. Current roles include Chair of England Golf and the England and Wales Cricket Board Regulatory Committee in addition to advising sports in India and China.

Coward said: “I’m delighted to be joining UK Athletics as interim CEO. Athletics is a sport that captures the nation’s imagination each and every year, but Olympic and Paralympic year is even more special.”

First time Wolves lifts BBL Cup in fine style

orcester Wolves lifted the BBL Cup for the first time in their history, after beating Bristol Flyers 67-59 in Sunday's final in front of a record 9,300 fans at Arena Birmingham.

Amir Williams was named MVP after dominating the paint at both ends. The 6'11" former Memphis Grizzlies NBA Summer League centre posted 23 points on 73% shooting, completing a double-double with 13 rebounds and adding five big blocks.

There was sure to be a new name on the Cup for the first time in 11 years, with Wolves seeking to make-up for defeat in the final two years ago, and Flyers competing in their first BBL

showpiece game.

And it was Matt Newby's Wolves that led from tip-tobuzzer as Amir Williams scored eight first quarter points and grabbed four of his boards in the opening ten minutes, helping Wolves to an early 16-10 edge.

The lead peaked at 14 three minutes into the second half, following a fearsome defensive display, as Williams scored his team's first seven points of the third period to make the score 4127, capping a 14-4 run across the break; and that gave them enough to see off a late Bristol comeback.

Flyers got back to within one shot heading into the final three minutes, but Birmingham native guard Kofi Josephs scored the key basket to keep them at arm's

length, and added a pair of late free-throws to seal it.

On raising his first piece of BBL silverware, Worcester Coach Matt Newby said, "This is big for the organisation and for me personally, but a huge one for the players. They're a young group, the youngest in the BBL this year, and it's a big statement."

Williams added: "I knew if I came in here and trusted the coach's game plan, played my game and as hard as I can then we can accomplish anything. This was the first step, but we want more than this, a lot more."

The big man was supported by 12 points from Mark Hughes and 11 from Cortez Edwards, while captain Maarten Bouwknecht contributed seven assists.

he Vitality Nations Cup saw host country England take on Jamaica, South Africa and current World Champions New Zealand in a mini tournament that took place in arenas across the country.

Starting at the Motorpoint Arena, in Nottingham, the big result saw Jamaica’s Sunshine Girls take sweet revenge in a tight game against the South Africa SPAR Proteas with a hard-fought 59-54 victory.

The Spar Protea caused one of the biggest upsets at the World Cup in Liverpool last year when they beat the much-fancied Jamaican side In the other match the England Roses were beaten by the world No.1, the Silver Ferns 64-48.

In the second leg at a packed Arena Birmingham, England, under new coach Jess Thirlby, faced a South Africa side they had beaten to win Bronze medal in the World Cup 2019. And, as then, the result was the same the Roses victorious 58-54.

Jamaica came up against a formidable New Zealand side, who showed why they are No.1, beating the youthful Sunshine Girls, 71-45.

It set up what was an exciting weekend of games at the Copperbox, in London with Saturday's game seeing the undefeated Silver Ferns take on the SPAR Proteas, who were yet to win a game.

Many thought that this would be a formality. However the performance of the SPAR

Proteas surprised the Silver Ferns with a display which saw them lose by only 7 goals - 4841. Many in the arena were expecting a greater score-line.

Following that match, the scene was then set for the rival match between England and Jamaica.

They last met at the World Cup, where England proved to be victorious. This time Jamaica, with new coach, former player Connie Francis in their corner, were set to reverse this result.

They took an early lead and never relented, winning the game 58-54, with GA, Shanice Beckford, receiving the ‘Player of the Match’ Award. The win put them in the final against New Zealand. England played South Africa Spar Proteas for 3rd place to spare their blushes.

England were pushed all the way, but inspired by their captain Natalie Haythornthwaite - winning her 50 Cap - and the home fans, won 65-63, to take the bronze medal.

The neutrals in the crowd were not disappointed with the final between New Zealand Silver Ferns, and the Jamaica Sunshine Girls.

An epic first half had the game all even 30-30.

The Silver Ferns eventually ran out winners 67-56. The Sunshine Girls redeemed themselves from that previous heavy defeat only days before, by losing only by 11 goals.

They, however, left a clear statement to the netball world; 'Jamaica No Problem'!

he Arab Women Sports Tournament (AWST), organised by Sharjah Women’s Sports (SWS), has broken a personal record.

The tournament’s Supreme Organising Committee (SOC) has announced the largest participation in its eight-year history with a record number of 74 clubs from 16 Arab countries, which will be competing in the fifth edition.

Set to run from Feb.2–12 in Sharjah, AWST 2020 will be held under the patronage of Sheikha Jawaher Bint Mohammed Al Qasimi, wife of His Highness Sheikh Dr Sultan Bin Mohamed Al Qasimi, Supreme Council Member and Ruler of Sharjah, Chairperson of SWS. The announcement was made at a press conference on Wednesday at the iconic Sharjah World Book Capital 2019 Monument, in the presence of Sheikh Khalid Bin Ahmed Al Qasimi, Head of the SOC

of AWST; Issa Hilal Al Hizami, Secretary-General of the Sharjah Sports Council; Nada Askar Al Naqbi, Deputy Head of the SOC of AWST, Head of the Executive Committee and Director General of SWS; Abdulaziz Taryam, CEO, Advisor and General Manager of Etisalat – Northern Emirates; and Rashid Al Obaid, Director of Sharjah Sports Channel.

During the event, SOC revealed that the UAE topped the list with 14 participating clubs, followed by the Kingdom of Saudi Arabia (KSA) with 12 clubs, which is the highest number of clubs from KSA that has signed up to compete in any edition of AWST. The Committee also confirmed that nine clubs will be representing Bahrain, while Jordan, Kuwait, and Algeria would participate in the sporting event with six clubs each.

The rest of the participating countries include Egypt with 4 clubs; Libya, Sudan, Qatar, Syria, Tunisia, and Palestine with two clubs each; and Oman, Iraq, and Morocco with one each.

UAE and Bahrain will compete in all nine sports: shooting, basketball, volleyball, table tennis, athletics, show jumping, fencing, archery and karate. Saudi Arabia will compete in all sports except shooting.

Kuwait is gearing up to take part in the shooting, basketball, volleyball, table tennis, archery and karate competitions, while Egyptian clubs will compete in shooting, basketball, volleyball, table tennis, archery and karate.

Jordanian sportswomen will be aiming for top spots in basketball, volleyball, table tennis, athletics, show jumping, and karate. Algerian athletes will concentrate on

volleyball, table tennis, archery, karate, shooting and basketball, while Libya will participate in table tennis, athletics, and karate.

Sudanese athletes will compete in athletics, show jumping, and archery, while Syrian sportswomen will take part in volleyball and karate. The Tunisian teams will compete in volleyball and basketball, while Palestinian sportswomen will test their might in athletics and karate. Shooting will be the only sport Omani athletes will participate in, while Qatari sportswomen will compete in fencing and shooting. Iraq and Morocco too will participate in

only one sport each, archery and table tennis, respectively.

In a keynote speech, Sheikh Khalid Bin Ahmed Al Qasimi stressed that Sharjah’s commitment to organising this biennial tournament reiterates its firm belief that sports is more than a past time or a hobby; it is a social and human right. He noted that the state of sports in a country was an indicator of its advancement.

He said: “We consider AWST as our message to the rest of the Arab societies, a bridge for collaboration, and a platform for Arab sportswomen. Since the beginning, Sharjah has worked
