Local leader honoured by Queen

A

leading champion of inter-ethnic was one of the selected, deserved few to be appointed an Officer of the Order of the British Empire in The Queen’s 2013 Birthday Honours list. Satinder Kaur Taunque B.A. B.T. P.G.C.E. Deputy Lieutenant of West Midlands was awarded the OBE for voluntary and charitable services to interethnic relations and to the community, in the West Midlands, at large. Mrs. Taunque DL has been engaging herself in a wide range of professional, social, cultural, educational, health and religious activities, plus voluntary services to the community since coming to the UK in 1969. Her contribution to intercommunity integration and cohesion ever since has been tremendous. During the past 43 years she has been working vehemently towards bridging the gap between the East and West, between the host community and ethnic minorities and was honoured by the World Punjabi Organisation for her community and voluntary work in the UK and abroad in 2011.

t was a year to remember, having had the cream of Jamaican and American athletes in the city, pre London 2012 Olympics & Paralympics, and a stream of international medal-winning stars coming thereafter as Birmingham rolled out the red carpet for the very best that sports had to offer its citizens. And that was just the tip of what was a memorable ‘iceberg’ of events for the city, as it makes its mark as a truly world-class international venue. With the addition of the return to its celestial home for the Birmingham International Carnival, then the Malcolm Marshall Memorial Cricket Cup in Handsworth Park, the annual German Market, Caribbean Food Festival, St. Patricks and St. Georges Day celebrations, Eid Mela, Divali, Vaisakhi, BASS Festival, Chinese New Year, the Conservative Conference, the Yonex International Badminton Tournament, Sky Ride and the Birmingham Half Marathon, all now permanent fixtures on the calendar, it’s praise indeed for the work carried out by Birmingham City Council Assistant Director for Sport and Events, Steve Hollingworth.
