Doreen is the Pride of Britain D oreen Lawrence, an inspirational woman who campaigned tirelessly for 19 years to bring her son’s killers to justice, has rightfully been awarded a Pride of Britain Lifetime Achievement award. We are all too familiar with the case of Stephen Lawrence, who was murdered in 1993. After almost two decades of campaigning, Doreen finally brought the killers to justice early this year, and in doing so changed the face of the law and policing. Her anti-racism campaign has determined the way minority
communities in the UK are now dealt with by the law. During the Stephen Lawrence investigation, many mistakes were made which delayed justice for so long, leading Doreen to fight for victims of
race crime and reform of the police service. She also established the Stephen Lawrence Charitable Trust to help young people from disadvantaged
backgrounds, and was awarded an OBE in 2003 for her services to community relations. Earlier this year she was chosen as flag bearer at the Olympics, and received a special award at the Women of The Year ceremony. Her willpower and strength in the face of such grief and sorrow has touched our hearts to the core. She has become a source of admiration for many, due to the grace in which she dealt with such gross injustice and the humility and courage she has had in the face of adversity. This is a woman who never gave up.
