PRINCIPAL’S FOREWORD 2016 has been a special year of significant achievements Volleyball C Division Girls and Football C Division Boys were for the school. As the school rejoiced with the 2016 cohort

OUTSTANDING SPORTS STUDENTS
MUHAMMAD RUKAIFI B JURAIMI (213) is the Sportsboy of the Year. His talent in sports has given him many opportunities to represent the school and the nation. As part of the school’s ‘C’ Division Sepak Takraw team, Rukaifi emerged victorious in the National Interschool Championships. In addition, he was part of the school team that clinched the first runner-up in the South Zone Inter-school Football Tournament. A promising football player with several international exposures already under his belt, he was also one of Singapore’s Under-14 national players to compete in Hong Kong and Brunei this year.

NURZIANAH BTE MOHAMMAD YAZID (211) is the Sportsgirl of the Year. A competitive Silat exponent, Nurzianah represented Singapore on several occasions. She secured a Silver in the World Junior Silat Championships in Malaysia and a Gold in the Singapore National Championships this year. There is no denying that her talent in sports is also displayed in her Co-Curricular Activity, Football. With her dedication and guidance as the Vice-Captain of the school’s ‘C’ Division Football team, she successfully led her teammates to become the champions of Singapore.

As part of the Character and Citizenship Education (CCE) programme, the Secondary One, Two and Three students attended their respective Outdoor Education Level Camps from the 3rd to 5th February this year. From indoor experiential learning at the NeWater Visitor Centre to outdoor adventure activities at Changi Coast and Tanjung Piai, Queenswayans are nurtured to become caring, responsible citizens and confident, lifelong learners.

Understanding the importance of water conservation
The seventh Assembly of Youth for Environment (AYE) was held at NeWater Visitor Centre. The theme of the event was ‘Water Sustainability’. Selected student leaders were trained as ‘Water Ambassadors’ by PUB, Singapore’s National Water Agency. From November 2015 to March 2016, QSS Water Ambassadors embarked on water improvement projects in the community. We believe that through our youths’ interactions and conversations, they can show that they care about water sustainability and have the empowerment to play a bigger role in water advocacy.

ENGLISH INGENIUM PROGRAMME The English Ingenium Programme nurtures the flair that our students may possess for the English Language. Through in-curriculum and out-of-classroom activities, the potential of our Ingenium students is developed to attain a strong academic foundation and an indepth knowledge of the language. Our Morning Assembly Programme is one avenue through which we aspire to groom confident orators.
LIFE SCIENCE PROGRAMME Secondary 2 Express students are introduced to life science through this one-year programme. Through the 5E Inquiry Model, students are equipped with the necessary skills to keep up with Life Science issues and forensic experimental techniques. The programme exposes Queenswayans to molecular genetics, DNA extraction, DNA gel electrophoresis and its application, as well as the collection, preservation and analysis of scientific evidence in forensic science. With the acquired knowledge and skills, students will take one step closer to become a Queens Graduate – a confident, lifelong learner in a changing world. 31
INTERNATIONALIZATION PROGRAMME
SERVICE LEARNING CUM CULTURE IMMERSION TRIP TO XIAMEN On 19 June 2016, a group of 34 student volunteers from Secondary Two and Three, accompanied by Mr Ivan Ho, Miss Sharelyn Teo, Ms Cheng Lulu and Miss Low Xin Yee flew to Xiamen, China for a 5D4N Service Learning cum Cultural Immersion trip. Prior to the trip, the teachers and students spent two weeks to carry out a series of fundraising activities, including ‘Lunch in the Dark’ and ‘Buy a Lunch’. The funds

were put to good use as necessities were purchased for the needy in Xiamen. The trip’s service learning focused on befriending the children in three orphanages and showing care for the residents in an elderly centre. Most of the student volunteers were unable to communicate fluently with the elderly and the children as the main language spoken in Xiamen was Minnan. Despite the language barrier, they tried their best to engage the locals in the activities that
they had planned in Singapore. Their presentation of the song and dance items, art and craft lessons and friendly games opened the door to newly-forged friendships. Even though the interaction with the locals was short, the student volunteers gained new perspectives and wished to return to visit them soon.
Treasures of the Study. The trip concluded with a visit to the UNSECO World Heritage Site, the Fujian Tulou, where the student volunteers captured a glimpse of life in the fort-like housing. It was no surprise that they were all in awe with the unique architecture and functions of the buildings, built with a mixture of clay and sandy soil.
Through an engaging Calligraphy lesson, the student volunteers also immersed themselves in the culture and heritage of Xiamen, which began with an informative talk about the history of the Chinese characters and the Four
Overall, the trip was certainly memorable and meaningful for the service-learning entourage as they strived to live out the school’s vision of being caring, responsible citizens and confident, lifelong learners.

GROOMING OF STUDENT LEADERS Developing leadership qualities of all Queenswayans The school ensures all students exhibit school values. They are given leadership opportunities and training through: • CCE lessons: To develop caring, responsible citizens, all students undergo life skills and character development modules that include MOE’s Social & Emotional Learning competencies and Lickona’s 8 Strengths of Character. • Cohort-level training: To ensure that every Queenswayan is equipped with the fundamentals to be a servant leader. • Role-based training: Different groups of student leaders go through different training based on the needs of their specialised role. • The Peer Tutoring Programme is a platform where students who are competent in their subjects tutor their peers, and students from neighbouring primary schools. • NYAA: To develop confident, lifelong learners, students go through a series of modules that require physical, mental and social skills, as part of NYAA (Bronze), which can be attained at the end of Sec 2. The progression to NYAA (Silver) is made compulsory to Sec 3 UG members who need to fulfil set criteria to achieve the award at the end of the year.
Prefectorial Board Sec 1 students who show leadership potential are selected at the end of Term 4. To allow greater participation by the student body, potential trainee prefects are nominated by not only their teachers but by their peers, thereafter nominated candidates will be vetted by teachers. Successful candidates embark on life as trainee prefects for 3 months, where they are paired with senior prefects who guide them along in daily school functions. They then undergo an interview where members of the executive committee, senior prefects and the Student Leadership & Development Committee (SLDC) teachers form the interview panel. Various scenarios are devised to elicit responses from interviewees, after which newly appointed prefects then undergo an Induction Workshop, before they are finally confirmed as prefects by Semester 2 the following year.
For the second year running, the Prefectorial Board and fellow Queenswayans had an opportunity to participate in electing the Head Prefect. The election was modelled after Singapore’s Presidential Election. Each process – Nomination Day, Campaigning, Cooling-Off and Polling Day were carefully conducted and completed. Peer Support Leaders Peer Support Leaders are selected in Sec 2 by the CCA teachers. They are selected based on their behaviour and actions displayed in and beyond their CCA since they joined the school. As their name suggests, the peer support leaders play an instrumental role in enthusing their peers during school events and emulating school values. They work closely with the Prefectorial Board in planning and facilitating school or cluster events such as the annual Sports Meet, Cross Country Meet, National Day celebrations and Teachers’ Day celebrations.
House Captains House Captains are nominated by the CCA Committee at the start of the year. They are role models of their respective houses and are responsible for promoting the team spirit of their respective houses in events such as the Sports Meet, Cross Country Meet and Inter-House Games. The House Vice-Captains were specifically chosen from the Secondary 3 cohort so that there is a smooth transition in Semester 2, after the annual Handing-Over Ceremony.

THE RITE OF PASSAGE INTO BECOMING BETTER LEADERS The OBS experience brought us out of our comfort zones. It was a rite of passage for us to become braver, calmer and more composed individuals in the face of a critical situation. Student leaders from the Secondary 3 classes were selected to attend this enriching 5D4N camp. After hearing from our seniors’ past experiences, we were excited but also terrified. We were afraid that we would not be able to endure this fear-inducing camp.
we were not allowed to bathe, and we learned that we would not be returning to the campsite for the entire duration. This meant that we had to live in the wilderness, and we would definitely have to be well prepared. Needless to say, we were terrified. However, the experience was not as nerve-racking as we had initially thought it would be. With the support and encouragement for one another, our camaraderie was strong and heartwarming. The experience helped many of us conquer our fears, foster our sense of independence and develop our perseverance. Overall, this camp created many memories, new friendships as well as new experiences. It has definitely taught each of us to become a stronger person and a better leader.
On the day of the camp, we left the school with our heavy bags and hearts. When we reached the Punggol Harbour, we were split into different watches and were subsequently allocated to different campsites. Different watches were assigned to do different activities, and both of us were able to do the same activity – kayaking. We were made to prepare supplies to kayak for three full days. Although we were grouped with people from other schools, we became friends in less than a day. The three days of land expedition was definitely exhausting. The bags, containing our tents and shirts, were heavy. Some of us were physically stronger; others were weaker. But we persevered, regardless the differences, and trekked a total distance of 22 km. Making new friends, getting out of our comfort zones and sharing embarrassing moments, OBS was a truly unforgettable experience!” - Davern (305)

APPLIED LEARNING PROGRAMME
The overarching aims of Queensway’s Applied Learning Programme (ALP) are to develop Queenswayans to possess a strong awareness for environmental issues and appreciate the environment where they live in. As part of the learning process, Queenswayans will develop 21st Century competencies, acquire knowledge and understanding about environmental concerns, and be able to propose solutions to resolve environmental issues.

Queensway’s two-tier ALP is in the area of Environment Sustainability with an emphasis on Water Sustainability. Lower Secondary students will experience Tier 1 as part of their school curriculum, while students with keen interest and aptitude will further refine their passion and skills in Tier 2 of the programme.

CCA Day, the day that students of all CCAs get to showcase and promote their CCAs to the Sec 1s. Students and parents flocked to various CCA booths, asking questions about the particular CCA. It was a meaningful morning spent by both students and parents, picking out the CCA that is suitable for their children.

During the sessions, relevant information was given to both the parents and students. For the Sec 3s, they were advised on the new assessment criteria and finally, for the Sec 2s, they were given information regarding the Sec 3 streaming. At the end of the sessions, there was also a Q-and-A session for parents to ask questions. 43

The festive celebration this year started off with the usual favourites by our two dance groups as well as song items by the students and teaching staff. The highlight of the celebration was the Lion Dance performance which had everyone in high spirit! The celebration then ended on a high note with the whole school tossing the Yu Sheng (Prosperity Toss) together at the school canteen!

World Water Day 2016 was commemorated on 22 March 2016. Every Queenswayan wrote their own water pledge and members of the Green Club then consolidated the pledges to form Water Wally, PUB’s mascot.

22 May has been designated by the United Nations as the International Day for Biodiversity. The school’s Green Club members carried out a biodiversity audit by making use of the SGBioAtlas app and surveying the campus’ flora and fauna, gaining hands-on experience in conducting wildlife surveys while honing their observational skills.

NATIONAL DAY CELEBRATION
This year’s National Day Celebration kicked off with a parade to welcome the Guest-of-Honour, Mrs. Keline Chow. The various Uniformed Groups led by this year’s Guard-ofHonour, the NPCC, marched smartly and proudly during the march-past. After the award ceremony and dance and song performances, usual favourites like the National Day Quiz got everyone very excited. The mood was further heightened with the mass singing of National Day songs.

Teachers’ Day Celebration kicked off with a series of music videos starring our very own Queensway teachers and staff. The amusing acts allowed students to see their teachers in another light and had the entire hall in stitches as everyone laughed along. Not to be outdone, Queensway’s finest and very talented students also danced and sang their way into our hearts. After the joyous celebration, the teachers were then treated a scrumptious buffet hosted by the PSG.

After the singing of the school song, the Recognition Assembly started off with a procession party which included the School Leaders, the graduating class teachers, Secondary 4 and 5 chairpersons as well as the Head and Vice-head Prefects. During the assembly, various awards were given out to students who had performed well in aspects beyond academics. Awards given out included, • the ‘CCA Meritorious Awards’, • the ‘CCA Team Awards’, • the ‘Outstanding Health & Fitness Class’, • the ‘CCA Outstanding Individual Awards’, • the ‘Colours Awards’ and • the ‘Outstanding Queens Graduate Awards’ After the address by the Head Prefect, Pearl Ng on behalf of the graduating cohort, the whole assembly ended off with the sounding of the gong to send off our graduating cohort of 2016 as they went on to prepare for their respective national and school examinations.

INNOVATION AND ENTERPRISE PROGRAMME It has been a fulfilling year for the Innovation and Enterprise Committee as various school programmes were organised to nurture critical thinking and creative problem solving.
RESULTS FOR NATIONAL COMPETITIONS
A. Youth Innovation Competition (YIC) 2016
At the class level, all classes participated in the Vibrant Classroom Competition in Term One. Many classes came up with a variety of relevant articles and aesthetically attractive noticeboards that not only promoted learning, but also helped to reinforce the school values. In Term Three, each class was given some subject related articles to make thinking and learning more visible. At the school level, a Student Forum was conducted for each level in Semester 1 so that every Queenswayan was given an opportunity to contribute ideas to improve or impact the school environment and programmes as a whole.
Out of the 69 business plan entries submitted by 29 schools, Queensway emerged as one of the 12 semi-finalists. Based on the theme of Environment, Brandon Lam Jun Xi (305) the students went through a Design Thinking course where they had the opportunity to ideate and propose solutions B. A total of 10 teams were selected to showcase their prototypes during our school’s annual AYE at the end of the year. Students with keen interest and aptitude were involved in the Tier 2 and Tier 3 programmes. It was our first year participating in external competitions such as the Youth Innovation Challenge (YIC) by Singapore Management University, and the Youth Entrepreneurs Competition (YEC) by Singapore Discovery Centre. The Alumni is grateful to the school for the numerous opportunities given to be part of school programmes. Our first activity was welcoming the Secondary One students on CCA Day and Assembly and our last activity was wishing the graduating students all the best for their examinations. In between, we also hosted a CNY lunch for the less privileged, toasted the Best All Round students, played soccer and basketball with former students and saluted the teachers for their contribution. The Alumni will continue to ‘bond the Past with the Present for the Future of Queensway’.

2016 has been an amazing year for the Prefectorial Board. Led by Head Prefect Pearl Ng of 402 and driven by the motto “To Lead is To Serve”, prefectorial duties started on the very first day of school as the prefects welcomed the new Secondary One students into the Queensway family. To help the juniors bond quickly during the Orientation Week, the prefects organised a series of fun and exciting icebreaker games. In addition, the prefects also conducted school tours and acted as buddies to the Secondary One students to help them adapt quickly to their new environment. Apart from the day-to-day duties such as leading the school’s morning assembly and presenting morning announcements, the prefects also play an important role
in school events such as Speech Day, National Day, Cross Country, Sports Day, Parent-Teacher-Conferences and Assembly of Youth for the Environment. These events definitely help the prefects grow as leaders, whilst sharpening and honing their social and etiquette skills. The positive feedback from teachers and parents after these events definitely showed that the prefects have risen to these occasions gracefully.

Queensway Secondary School NPCC Unit consists of more than 100 cadets, led by 7 teacher-officers, with the mission of developing cadets into caring and responsible citizens. This year, the unit also achieved a Gold Award in the Best Unit Competition. NPCC has close affiliation with the Singapore Police Force. Under the strong leadership of Regina Cheong and Puah Yuu Shuen, QSS Guides has once again sustained Gold Honours for the coveted Puan Noor Aishah Award since 2011. Together with their court of honour committee members, they conducted and designed many activities aimed at enhancing Guides’ resilience, confidence and self-esteem. Queensway Girl Guides embarked on their first ever ‘Free Scouts and Dove Company with the vision of empowering Being Me’ sharing journey with our international Hong girls through improving body confidence and self-esteem. ST JOHN BRIGADE
The St. John Brigade provides first aid and other related services to the school and the public. The cadets rendered first aid duties in school functions such as the school’s CrossCountry and the Annual Sports Meet and also National events such as the ASEAN PARA Games in December 2015 and this year’s National Day Parade. The SJB cadets also helped to raise funds during St. John’s Annual Flag Day and Walkathon for the St. John National Headquarters. This year, a record of four teams participated in the annual First Aid Competition in the Cadet and Adult categories and selected cadets also participated in the First Aid Quiz which was organized by SJAB Headquarters. Cadets were sent for leadership courses such as the Standard Non-Commissioned Officers (N.C.O.) Course

and Advanced N.C.O Course in order to qualify as NCOs of SJB and to instill values of discipline and resilience. Cadets were also sent for enrichment and recreational badges to help them attain badges for the Cadet’s Proficiency Badges Scheme. Such courses include the Basic Drills Instructor course, SANA course, Civil Defence course and Total Defence course. In order to improve their first aid knowledge, cadets attended first aid courses such as Basic Cardiac Life Support (BCLS), CPR AED and Heart Saver courses. SJB obtained a Silver Award for its Corps Achievement Award in 2016 and we have four cadets who achieved the Chief Commissioner’s Badge this year, the highest award that a cadet can achieve under the Cadet Proficiency Badge Scheme.

CROSS COUNTRY
QSS Cross Country has grown from strength to strength. Our membership has been steadily increasing through the years, as the CCA introduced a number of competitive and recreational activities into our programme. Our runners have participated in the following competitions and events in 2016: • National Schools X-Country Championship • National Schools Track & Field Championship • Wings X-Country Championship • The Straits Times Run 2016 QSS Cross Country performed well this year. At this year’s National Schools’ Cross Country Championship held at Bedok Reservoir, our teams achieved the following results: Our ‘B’ Division boys did an excellent job with a top 20 finish. Special mention goes to Dorcus Chu who did us proud by emerging 18th out of 254 runners in her category. Along with the rest of her teammates, our ‘C’ Division girls emerged 11th position overall.

11 of our athletes also travelled to Foshan, China in December 2015, pitting our skills against athletes from the Foshan Sports School. They learnt valuable lessons in training methods and the attitude of the Chinese athletes towards sports excellence. A Cross Country Camp was organised in December 2015 at Aloha Resort to build the team spirit of the athletes and allow them to bond. The team stayed together over three days and two nights.

This year, our ‘B’ boys performed well in the South Zone Inter-School Basketball Championship played in January. We did the school proud by making it past the first round. In the second round, we gave our best but did not qualify for the semi-finals. Our ‘C’ boys competed in our South Zone Inter-School Basketball Championship in Term 3. The team went through intense training during the June school holiday. We put up a commendable performance by making it through to the second round. Although we fought fearlessly in Round 2, we succumbed to stronger opponents in four of the five matches and were not able to proceed to the next round.

The boys were pumped up, focussed and determined to taste victory this time. The first regu beat their opponents QUARTER-FINALS in straight sets, and the second regu followed suit. Queensway Secondary School emerged fourth in the group in the National Football Tournament Preliminary and did not qualify for the Quarter-Finals. The team achieved commendable results, especially in the zonal tournament where we emerged second. However, we were not able to garner the same success at the National level. Nevertheless, a lot of hard work and dedication were put in by the players. The team continues to train regularly under the guidance of our coach, Mr Jasni Hatta, and our advisor, Mr Justin Fernandez. Apart from the weekly training sessions, the boys have also been involved in periodic friendly matches with other schools. To hone their skills further, our players are exposed to other competitive events. We hope to build on the strengths of this present team through more external competitions in the future.

Our ‘B’ Division girls played their opening match this year against Whitley, winning with a score of 5-2. They proceeded to win their next four matches confidently, earning them a spot in the semi-finals against Hong Kah where they won 1-0. Securing a place in the finals, the B Girls met Bowen at the Serangoon Stadium. The girls held their ground until the last few minutes of the game where they conceded two goals to lose to Bowen 2-0. The team played with cohesion and teamwork and this would not have been achieved without resilience and the ‘never-say-die’ attitude in the team.

Our ‘C’ Girls started training as early as January once the Secondary One intake arrived and the selection process for potential players began. Through training, the girls learned basic footwork and positional awareness. Game strategy was slowly introduced and the players themselves started to gel as a team.

This year, our ‘C’ Division girls fought hard to enter the finals in the Inter-School South Zone Championship. The match against Fairfield Methodist Secondary was intense, but the girls competed fearlessly with the support of the school’s entourage of teachers and students. We are proud of our girls for attaining second position in the South Zone Championship. Our ‘C’ Division boys also did us proud by securing third position in the South Zone Championship. They played their best in the preliminary rounds, bringing them to the semi-finals against Ang Mo Kio Secondary School. The boys put in a gallant effort to beat their opponents 2-1, emerging third in the South Zone Championship. Our ‘B’ Division girls seized the fourth position in the South Zone Championship. The girls displayed commendable teamwork and fighting spirit in every match. Although they did not manage to defend their championship title, they persevered and did not concede defeat in the face of adversity during their matches. Volleyball is a sport that requires much teamwork and cooperation among the players. Besides having excellent skills, communication between the players is also essential. We also value diligence and hard work during our training sessions. With our strong rapport and unrelenting determination, we remain committed in the pursuit of excellence and bringing glory to the school.

SYF RESULT IN 2015: ACCOMPLISHMENT 2016 is a fruitful year for Queensway Concert Band. Under the guidance of our newly-appointed Band Conductor Mr Edmund Chang, the band was involved in various school performances. In January, the band entertained the Secondary One students during Orientation Day which recruited 27 new members. In addition, the band members put up an interesting performance during the Chinese New Year Celebration. Besides that, the band was also featured in the school’s National Day Parade, Annual Speech Day Parade and Concert.
To keep the band members actively involved in honing their skills and bringing their musicality to greater heights, the band took part in the 5th Singapore International Band Festival in July. The preparation for this competition proved to be an enriching experience for the band members as they also got to learn from overseas instructors. Through their perseverance and hard work, the band achieved a bronze for the competition.
In October, an overnight camp was held to foster bonding between the Secondary One members and the main band members. In this camp, team-building games were organised to allow the juniors to know each other as well as their seniors better. It has been an enriching year for the band and it is our desire that the passion of music-making in all the band members continue to grow in the years to come.
Character building is also emphasised. In August, the band members brought much cheer and joy by putting up a performance at the Lion Befrienders.

SYF RESULT IN 2015: DISTINCTION Drama Club creates opportunities to nurture artistically excellent Queenswayans who are responsible, dedicated and disciplined so as to make an impact to the community. During the first half of the year, the Drama Club was involved in the CCA Day. They put up an outstanding performance called “Ah Gong, my Superhero”. We also participated in the Human Value Drama Festival whereby more than 60 local secondary schools had participated in. We received very good reviews from the judges and it was a valuable experience for the club. In addition, we were also very privileged to be invited to perform at the National Library during the Asian Festival of Children’s Content. 88
As we believe in serving our community, we began the second semester by putting on performances at the Queenstown Library. The performances were “Grandpa, my Superhero” and “No Fits, Nilson”. Apart from these performances, we also started on intensive training for the SYF 2017 competition. Infocomm Club aims to excite students about infocommunication in a fun and meaningful way by training students in IT knowledge, critical thinking skills and creativity. The club also provides students with opportunities to cultivate leadership, entrepreneurship and community spirit. There are currently 23 members from Secondary 1 to 5. The club focuses mainly on digital media and games development on top of the basic computer skills. Some of the more advanced types of software that the club has embarked on are Illustrator, Scratch and digital imaging. Scratch encourages students to think systematically and logically before coming up with their own mini movies while Illustrator can be used by members to create posters 90
and cartoon characters which can be used to remember certain concepts in their curriculum. Through computer drawing, members are able to remember things better and learn through a less stressful platform. Digital imaging also helps to develop members’ imagination and an eye for details as precision and visualisation are needed to produce the product. Members are also equipped with specialised skills like clay motion, storm motion and photo-editing to enhance their ability in producing their own short clips. With various combinations of software used, the members are able to produce different types of products, be it educational or fun. We also participated in several competitions such as Ace-of-Coders organised by IDA and went into the finals. Hopefully through these activities offered by the club, members can apply what they have learnt either to their secondary school curriculum or further studies in higher institutions.
