message by president, the ngee ann kongsi

2015 is a significant year for the Ngee Ann Kongsi. It marks the charitable foundation’s 170th anniversary and we are proud to have celebrated it in conjunction with Singapore’s 50th year of independence. 2015 is also a proud year for Ngee Ann Secondary. I would like to congratulate the school for achieving the prestigious School Distinction Award after undergoing an External Validation by the Ministry of Education (MOE). I am especially proud that the school was conferred the Best Practice status for all the areas identified by MOE, which includes Teaching & Learning, Character & Citizenship Education, Student All-Round Development, Staff Well-Being & Development, and Partnership. I am also heartened to learn that the school achieved the National Arts Education Glow Award in 2015, which acknowledges its success in developing a holistic arts education for its students. These awards are a testament to the school’s unwavering efforts to support and develop its teachers well and its success in providing the best possible form of education for its students. As a charitable organisation that places high priority on education, the Ngee Ann Kongsi is proud to have played a significant role in supporting the school’s efforts to realise its vision of being an Icon of Excellence and Pride of the Community. Well done! I am also pleased that the school is reinforcing the importance of values through educational partnerships. It is heartening to learn that the school’s Secondary 2 students, led by members of the Parent Support Group, folded 100,000 paper stars in support of ‘Wish Upon A Silver Star’, a fundraising project organised by the North East Community Development Council and NTUC FairPrice Foundation Limited. I applaud the school 04

and its dedicated PSG members for helping to raise $10,000 for the special needs and lower income beneficiaries of this project, who live in the North East district. The school’s efforts to equip its students with values such as care and compassion will go a long way towards shaping a more compassionate and gracious society in Singapore. In its quest to provide its students with a quality education, the teachers of Ngee Ann Secondary lead by example in acquiring new knowledge that will help the school to remain relevant in an everchanging education landscape. I would like to congratulate Mr Mohammed Hazmi Bin Hasni and Mdm Nora Osman for successfully graduating with a Master in Education degree from the Ngee AnnAdelaide Education Centre. The Ngee Ann Kongsi hopes to continue supporting the staff of Ngee Ann Secondary in their professional development, with the aim of equipping the school with an excellent group of dynamic educators who will lead the students in bringing the school to greater heights. I wish to thank the Principal, Mr Albert Lim, and the staff for achieving another year of many successes. I would also like to express my appreciation to Ms Jacqueline Yew for her invaluable service and strong leadership during her tenure as VicePrincipal of the school. With such a dedicated team of School Leaders, teachers, parents and alumni, I believe that the school is poised to take on the challenges of the future and continue providing a quality and holistic education for its students.

Mr Tan Kien Lip President Ngee Ann Kongsi

message by chairman,

school management committee, ngee ann secondary school 2015 marks the 170th year of the Ngee Ann Kongsi’s contributions to the community and in particular, its commitment to the development of education in Singapore. It also marks the 21st year of Ngee Ann Secondary’s commitment to developing the whole child, with sterling achievements in both the academic and non-academic fields. I would like to thank the Principal, Mr Albert Lim, and his team of dedicated and capable staff for encouraging the students of Ngee Ann Secondary to give their best to all that they undertake. The 2014 graduating cohort did the school proud in the GCE ‘O’ Level Examinations, with 99 out of the 278 students attaining at least five distinctions. This is a testament to the success of the school’s teaching and learning programmes, which are designed to help the students reach their fullest academic potential. It is also heartening to note that the school’s Co-Curricular Activity (CCA) groups continue to perform well on various platforms, with the Volleyball ‘C’ Division Girls Team emerging as National Champions and the Wushu team bringing home an unprecedented number of 21 medals from the 11th National Inter-School Wushu Championships. The Performing Arts CCAs also did the school proud at the 2015 Singapore Youth Festival Arts Presentation, with Certificates of Distinction awarded to the Chinese Orchestra, the Choir and the ELDDS (Drama) group. Not to be outdone, the Uniformed Group CCAs continue to excel, with Gold Awards achieved by the Girl Guides, the National Cadet Corps and the National Police Cadet Corps. These achievements clearly indicate that the students of Ngee Ann Secondary excel under the guidance of their supportive teachers. I am proud that the school’s efforts to equip its students with a holistic education have succeeded in turning out all-rounded students like Marcus Lim Sheng Jie of Secondary 3R6, who was accorded the A*STAR Science Award (Upper Secondary) in 2015. The artistically-inclined student, who is a member of the school’s Enhanced Art Programme, is also an exemplary Student Leader who serves as 06

the President of the Student Council and a Senior Patrol Leader of the Scouts group. Marcus is a fine example of an all-rounded student of Ngee Ann Secondary who has been given ample opportunities to develop his diverse talents and demonstrate his many aptitudes. The Ngee Ann Kongsi is proud to have contributed to the holistic development of students like Marcus, whom we hope will pay it forward as members of the school’s alumni and contribute to the development of future NASians. The achievements of the students of Ngee Ann Secondary could not have been possible without the support of a first-class teaching force that is constantly experimenting with innovative pedagogical approaches to improve the quality of the education offered by the school. I would like to commend Mr Ben Khor for achieving the Silver Award in the Innovation Champion category of the 2015 PS21 ExCEL Awards. I would also like to congratulate Mr Neo Guang Xian, Mdm Noor Azean Binte Khamis and Mr Tan Chee Keng for achieving the Silver National Innovation and Quality Circles (NIQC) Award by SPRING Singapore and the Bronze MOE Innergy Award for their 3D Squint Project. It is also heartening to learn that the teachers of Ngee Ann Secondary are contributing to the professional development of the teaching fraternity in Singapore. I would like to commend Mrs Theresa Lai for being accorded the Fellow of Academy of Singapore Teachers Award, and Mrs Sarene Sim and Mr Abu Bakar Bin Farid for receiving the Associate Award. I wish the staff and students of Ngee Ann Secondary all the best for the years to come. May the school continue to be an Icon of Excellence and Pride of the Community that turns out students who are equipped with the values, skills and competencies that will carry them through the challenges that the future may bring.

message by the principal 2015 has been an eventful year for the nation and Ngee Ann Secondary School. Apart from celebrating the nation’s 50th birthday, we also mark the passing of our founding father, Mr Lee Kuan Yew. It is only apt that we take a moment to reflect so that we can begin 2016 anew in the right spirit.

of losing loved ones is universal, the conviction to exercise compassion is not beyond our means. I am happy to report that our school’s local and regional service projects have been sustained on a regular basis. I am even happier to note that we, as a school community, have been making a difference.

At 50 years, Singapore has come a long way. Today, our young nation is economically competitive, politically stable, and internationally reputable. The first ever cross-Straits summit between China’s and Taiwan’s top leaders since 1949 took place in November this year right here in the republic. China’s decision to have Singapore host this landmark meeting underscores the credibility and significance of Singapore’s place in both the regional and global arena. Yet what part have we played to contribute to such international esteem? Is there anything that we can do as individuals or as a community to sustain Singapore’s good repute? These are questions we need to ask ourselves even as we celebrate our national, school and personal achievements.

The positive results from our school’s External Validation exercise in May affirms that we are headed in the right direction. Being conferred the School Distinction Award is a recognition that we have robust processes in place, and attests to the efficacy of our school management team – both past and present. I thank all staff for their contribution in making Ngee Ann an extraordinary school. The accolades we receive as a school are as much yours as they are Ngee Ann Secondary’s.

We enjoy enviable peace and harmony as a multiracial and multi-religious community in Singapore, especially in comparison with other countries that suffer from inter-ethnic strife and inter-religious conflict. The November 2015 Paris attacks and the Syrian refugee crisis seem distant and unrelated to our daily lives, but they really cut close to home. How conscious are we of our daily efforts in preserving this delicate yet precious social fabric in Singapore? As individuals, and as a community, we can make a difference. We share a common humanity with our fellow global citizens – the pain

As we peruse the following pages highlighting the school’s academic, co-curricular and community achievements, let us remind ourselves of the purpose of education. A successful education should sharpen our mind, stir our hearts, and inspire us to action. It should help us conceive solutions to problems, exercise sound judgment premised on consistent values, and seek ways of contributing meaningfully to our community, nation and beyond. This, I believe, would be the best way of living out our ideals, while honouring our parents, our founding fathers, and the Ngee Ann tradition of excellence.

Mr Albert Lim Tsun Khee Principal Ngee Ann Secondary School

Hard work at the right time and in the right amount is important to achieve one’s goals. In order to achieve those goals, it is important to set our priorities right and work with the resources that we have. I believe that humility and lifelong learning are critical for success, regardless of age. It is also important to stay healthy and develop meaningful relationships with family and friends, spreading happiness all around and living an enriching life.
