PRINCIPAL’S FOREWORD “We are what we repeatedly do. Excellence, then, is not an act, but a habit.” – Aristotle I recall mentioning this quote in one of my morning reflections in 2014. My intention at that moment was to encourage all of us to persevere, and to make that drive for success become part of us. Whether all staff and students heard, and acted upon it, I am not sure. But I am very sure that many have heard, and have responded with the drive to persevere in their individual ways. Take for example this magazine you are reading right now. This is the first year the school magazine has gone digital. It is not only to make the effort to be environmentally conscious, but also the result of wanting to innovate and improve what we do. Looking at this issue, you will also find that we want to show more stories of HIHS people, celebrate success, and remember the milestones for this year. I am personally grateful for the many accomplishments by our staff and students this year. We were invited as a school to share our programmes at different occasions, with both members of the fraternity, and with members of the public. Our encouragement to students and staff to be civic-conscious and to exemplify our school values have not gone unnoticed. Several members of the public have written in to commend our students and staff for the acts of kindness they witness around the neighbourhood. Our students continue to do well at the national examinations, and clinched awards in various academic and co-curricular competitions and events. Even our alumni have achieved significant academic achievements in their post-secondary education. Our theme for the magazine is “We will be one”. But I believe that it is not a future act we are hoping to see accomplished, but rather it is an act that is being realized at this present moment. We are becoming one, and I think this is happening because all of us desire to see and experience success in whatever we think, say and do. It is also another way of saying that the HI spirit lives on in all of us - staff, students, alumni and well-wishers. Do enjoy flipping through the e-magazine, and relive the wonderful moments of this year.

Message by Father Frederick Quek Looking back at the academic year and all the events that have taken place, it is right to thank God for his love and providence and all the blessings showered upon Holy Innocents’ High School. How important it is to have a heart of gratitude to God and all the people He has sent to enrich our lives and for all the achievements of the school. May we continue to give of our best in all that we do, especially in shaping and moulding the young lives entrusted to us. In this regard, a big “thank-you” to the Principal, Vice-Principals, teachers, students, staff and all who collaborate with Holy Innocents’ High School. “The Lord bless you and keep you; The Lord make His face to shine upon you, And be gracious to you; The Lord lift up His countenance upon you, And give you peace” – Numbers 6:24-26.

Sports Elective Programme for Lower Secondary Students As part of our school’s PE curriculum to encourage students to lead an active and healthy lifestyle, our students are exposed to a wider range of physical activities and sports not covered under the PE syllabus. After the Mid-YearExaminations in May, Secondary 1 students participated in Inline Skating Programme while the Secondary 2 students had fun playing Tchoukball, Water Football and Archery. 39


M LU CU RI Cur Sports Carnival 2015 Our school’s annual Sports Carnival took off on the last day of the first term on 13 March. Organised into 4 different sports groups, students of HIHS immersed themselves in four games, namely basketball, floorball, netball and football. The carnival was organised using an inter-class format to encourage class bonding and generate greater interest in the games. The department took pains to try and engage all students in the carnival, by motivating and organising them during their respective PE lessons. Students learnt the value of teamwork and the spirit of participation through the different games, played at a competitive level, but through it all, displayed great sportsmanship. All in all, it was an eventful and meaningful day, as we gave out over 200 prizes to the top three teams of each level. Many were spotted with happy faces as they proudly displayed their medals. We are grateful to have committed teachers and students who have helped to make possible this memorable and enjoyable event.

ACES DAY 2015 ACES Day, also known as All Children Exercise Simultaneously Day, is part of our department’s strategy to encourage students’ active participation in physical exercise, to promote physical activity, health and fitness, as well as to build school and class spirit among the students. This year, students participated actively in a telematch race which comprised events like short distance sprinting, gunny sack hopping, hula hoop balancing and a teamwork finale event. Students were also involved in a friendly soccer match which saw 22 students playing against 11 teachers using 4 different goalposts. It was an eventful day, and both students and teachers forged closer bonds through the various events.

ART The Art curriculum aims to provide students with a range of art exposure and experiences. Students explore and generate ideas by exploring the use of materials, techniques and technologies. The Upper Secondary students had the opportunity to visit various art exhibitions, artist studios, and also curate and showcase their learning through their own exhibition. On top of what they have learnt in the classroom, this year, we also invited Canon Imaging Academy to conduct a photography workshop to broaden the Secondary 3 students’ understanding of photography. The life skills acquired through the FCE programme will enable students to think critically and make informed decisions for healthy and responsible living. FCE covers the basic principles of nutrition, planning of meals, food management, diseases related to diet and consumer studies. Students will be equipped with food management skills and culinary skills that enable them to be self-sufficient in planning and preparing healthy meals for themselves and their family. 46

M LU CU RI Cur English Language & Literature Department To prepare our students to thrive in the 21st Century, our teachers use an integrative approach to Media Education, anchored on the school’s Applied Learning Programme in Journalism & Broadcasting. The students are taught and assessed by using a variety of media tools and platforms in the English Language classroom. Equipped with sound pedagogical competency, teachers work in teams to design lessons and assessment tasks for their levels. The lessons are based on relevant current issues and on equipping our students with multimodal literacies, which are essential in enhancing their comprehension skills and helping them achieve a deeper appreciation of the world around them.

English Language & Literature Department

English Week English Week was held in Term 1 Week 10. It was a full week of fun activities to encourage students to lose themselves in the world of books. There was a book review competition and students submitted brilliant book reviews on many interesting stories. Recess was filled with exciting literary performances from the Lord of the Flies for the Upper Secondary Recess and fairy tale inspired news clips for the Lower Secondary Recess. Teachers were also interviewed on their favourite books by the J&B journalists. The Amazing Race Competition was a nerve-wrecking race against time to find answers based on clues. Two movies, The Bridge to Terrabithia and Inkheart were screened. The celebration of English was closed with a showcase of a news report by the Lower Secondary classes and a dramatisation of Lord of the Flies by the Pure Literature students during Assembly period. What an exciting week filled with performances, quizzes and competitions. National Schools Literature Festival The National Schools Literature Festival was held on the 22nd of August, Saturday. Students from Secondary 1, 2 and 3 headed to NIE to immerse themselves in the world of Literature. The Secondary 1 students participated in the Book Parade. They had prepared a diorama, a model of a scene from their Literature text, Or Else the Lightning God by Catherine Lim. The Secondary 2 students put up a skit, based on Stepping Up, in the Book Trailer Competition. The Secondary 3 Literature Students participated in an engaging and well-prepared debate based on Lord of the Flies. The students then attended lectures on various literary genres and modes. It was a truly enriching experience. Thank you to the Literature teachers who guided the students throughout their exciting day! 49


M LU CU RI Cur Combined Humanities The study of the 3 disciplines within the Humanities helps each student of Holy Innocents’ High School appreciate how mankind interacts with his environment and surroundings. It allows each student to understand and appreciate the complexities and realities of the human condition, and how this drives man’s behaviour, decisions and plans both historically and in the present. Moreover, learning the Humanities at HIHS means to collaborate with fellow students, leveraging technology and experiencing authentic learning through investigation during field trips and games. Students learn to not only obtain data and information from various sources but also analyse, synthesise and discern the reliability of each source. At the end of 4-5 years of study in HIHS, every student should graduate with a deeper understanding and respect of humanity in its entire array, armed with the skill to be critical and analytical of what he reads while being able to empathise with different perspectives of issues in the world.

HUMANITIES DEPARTMENT

Social Studies Social studies is studied primarily at Upper Secondary as part of the compulsory Combined Humanities subjects. However, students in the Normal (Technical) course learn it all throughout their 4 years in HIHS. Students learn about how Singapore society is organised within and how Singapore interacts with the world at large. Leveraging the affordances in which technology enhances the learning experience, students have the opportunity to use different apps to learn both collaboratively as well as individually at their own pace. Although the skill-sets learnt are similar to those learnt in history, social studies helps students to be more aware of the current issues both in Singapore and in the world, so that they become truly active Singapore citizens in a History “History is a people’s memory, and without a memory, a man is globalised world. The study of history also begins at Secondary 1, when students learn to interrogate sources to reconstruct the past and to appreciate the different arguments and perspectives that continue to persist about important historical events in the story of mankind. A key element in the learning of history is through historical Investigation, where students experience the work of a historian through analysing both primary and secondary sources to reconstruct an understanding of past events. Core History will be offered in 2016 to the Secondary 3 students for the first time so as to cater to the interests of those who desire to deepen their knowledge, understanding and skills in history.

M LU CU RI Cur MOTHER TONGUE LANGUAGES DEPARTMENT The vision of the Mother Tongue Languages (MTL) Department is: To Learn, Love and Live MTL. The Mother Tongue Languages Department recognises the challenges faced by the 21st Century students in the learning of the Mother Tongue Languages and hence aims to develop the students’ interest and love for the Mother Tongue Languages through a repertoire of pedagogical strategies to equip them with the four main types of language skills, which are listening, oral, reading and writing skills. Opportunities to participate in various MTL related competitions are also provided for students to hone their language skills and to increase their level of self-confidence. Besides equipping students with the necessary language skills, the Mother Tongue Languages teachers also hope to inculcate positive moral values as well as impart cultural knowledge to our students so that they have a strong sense of identity towards their own heritage and culture. These objectives are achieved through regular conversation and discussion during lessons as well as through cultural activities that enrich their cultural experiences.

13th Xin Lei Jiang National Secondary School Creative Writing Competition To encourage the use of Chinese language and stimulate the interest for creative writing among Secondary School students, Singapore Hokkien Huay Kuan, Singapore Literary Society Nan Chiau High School, and ‘Zaobao Comma’ organised the 13th Xin Lei Jiang National Secondary Schools Creative Writing Competition. The school is very proud of Zhang Fan, who represented the school for the Upper Secondary category and had received the third prize for her outstanding writing.

CHINESE TEA ETIQUETTE AND MOONCAKE MAKING WORKSHOP In order to enrich our students’ cultural experience, a Chinese Tea Etiquette and Mooncake Making Workshop was specially arranged by Ms Angela Wong and supported by other CL teachers, to allow students to have the first-hand experience of preparing Chinese tea the traditional way and sharing the brew with their friends. In addition, to complement the good tea the students had brewed, they were also taught how to make delicious snow skin mooncakes. Everyone had their fill while acquiring important knowledge about their roots and culture in the learning process.

2015 CHINESE NEW YEAR CELEBRATION The Chinese New Year Celebration 2015 that was led by the Mother Tongue Languages Department was a joyous and meaningful event for both the students and staff. Besides the annual Classroom Decoration Competition and Costume Making Competition that got everyone excited and hyped up, HI staff and students also participated in the Hamper Making VIA Activity and all the hampers made were donated to the residents of the Lions Befrienders Singapore so that they could experience the warmth of this festive occasion too. The concert was a blast with many exciting performances, pop quizzes and an eye-catching fashion parade show by the models from both the lower and upper secondary classes. Everyone, including our special guests, the residents from the Lions Befrienders Singapore, enjoyed themselves tremendously as we ended the event on a high note with mass singing led by Mr Yap and the student leaders.

Bonding for students

ML workshop and Iftar 2015 The Malay Language Unit organised a Malay Cultural workshop and ‘Iftar’ or known as breaking fast together with the Muslim students and teachers with regards to the fasting month, the month of Ramadhan, for the Muslims. This event is not only exclusive to the Malay Muslim students but also open to the whole school population. We have been receiving very encouraging and overwhelming support from the student population every year since 2011. The Cultural Workshop was filled with fun cultural activities such as Malay crafts. This time round the students made clay artefacts of the Malay Community which includes Malay musical instruments, food, clothing, traditional games etc. We would like to take to this opportunity to make our students understand and appreciate the diversity in our community and the culture that comes with it so that our younger generation will not forget our multi-racial language and tradition.

For the ‘Iftar’, buffet dinner was provided for the students. The nonMuslim students and teachers also got to experience the moments of breaking fast with the Muslim students and teachers. Journalism and Broadcasting Society (CCA) students had the opportunity to mentor and facilitate primary school students from Poi Ching Primary School this year, allowing them to share and apply what they have learnt from Journalism and Broadcasting. They conducted a 3-session workshop on Radio Drama for the primary school students and recorded the dramas in our school’s very own Broadcasting Station, “HIHS On Air”. Students from Journalism and Broadcasting Society also contributed to the community through monthly story-telling sessions held in Cheng San Library.

HIHS won the Third Prize in the National Radio Drama Script Writing Competition 2015

Competitions, Achievements & Contributions Many internal and external platforms are tapped on to give students opportunities to put into practice what they have learnt. Students from the Journalism and Broadcasting Society (CCA) take on emcee roles in major school events such as Chinese New Year Celebration, Award Presentation Ceremony and National Day Celebration. They also take part in Journalism and Broadcasting related competitions throughout the year to stretch their potential and apply their learning. Two teams of students took part in the annual Radio Drama Script Writing Competition this year. Out of the five winning entries, these two teams clinched the Third Prize and the Consolation Prize for the competition. They were also given the opportunity to meet experienced DJs and were mentored by these DJs in radio drama recording. Two teams of students who participated in the National Editorial Competition also clinched the Third Prize and Merit Award this year.

Mother Tongue Languages Symposium 2015 Holy Innocents’ High School was proudly invited by CPDD to showcase our Applied Learning Programme – Journalism and Broadcasting – at the Mother Tongue Languages Symposium on 29 August 2015. At the symposium, we shared our existing programmes and new changes and development in Journalism and Broadcasting with the visitors. Students from the Journalism and Broadcasting Society also attracted large crowds of young children through their interesting story-telling sessions. School-based Basic Journalism and Broadcasting curriculum and workbooks designed by the school teachers

School-based J&B Curriculum Leveraging the school’s strengths and partnerships, our Journalism & Broadcasting Programme is anchored in the Chinese Language (CL). Broad-based opportunities for secondary 1 and 2 students are provided through the offering of Basic Journalism and Broadcasting Curriculum through weekly enrichment (in Chinese Language) and modular approach (in English Language). Each year, core skills and concepts will be taught through the main curriculum conducted in Chinese while a five-week introductory module will be taught in English. This year, teachers from the Applied Learning Programme Committee came together to design a 20week curriculum which includes lesson packages and workbooks for the CL Basic Journalism and Broadcasting Curriculum.

Programmes Elective Modules Elective Modules (EM) were introduced into the Normal Course to broaden the learning experiences of N(A) and N(T) students. Elective modules serve to extend the learning objectives of the existing subjects, introduce students to possible courses of study in post-secondary education institutes and with the mentorship of experienced people in the industry, help the students to be exposed to the different, varied career choices that are very relevant in Singapore. HIHS offers both Category A and Category B Elective Modules to the students. Category A EMs are offered to Sec 4 Normal (Technical) students. The school will work directly with ITE for Category A EMs and they are conducted in the ITE premises. The main objective of such EMs is to provide students with a taste of how courses in ITE are being conducted. It also provides a clear overview of the courses that are being offered in ITE so that students can make an informed choice when choosing their career paths after secondary school. Category B EMs are offered to Sec 3 Normal (Academic) and Normal (Technical) students during Post-Exam Enrichment Programme period in May and in October. The EMs conducted in May will cover courses related to service-related industries such as hairstyling or beauty therapy. To provide a holistic education for the students, the EMs conducted in October will cover courses related to Science and Technology based industries such as 3-D printing or Toy Making. Students’ interests play a major part in how certain elective modules are chosen to be conducted during the PostExam Enrichment Programme period. ART CLUB Art Club aims to provide students with interest in creating art that goes beyond pencil and paper. Students are exposed to a wide array of mediums, such as polymer clay, ceramics, illustration, digital art, photography, watercolour as well as literary art. Journalism and Broadcasting (J&B) Society started off as a non-core CCA in 2013 and has since transformed into a core CCA in 2014. Moving on to its second year as a core CCA, J&B Society had a full year of exciting events. We kicked off the year with planning and facilitating the Chinese New Year celebrations with the Mother Tongue Department. Our students have also been hosting important school events like Chinese New Year Celebrations, Award Presentation Ceremony, National Day Parade and Graduation Ceremony. Their voices can be heard weekly through the English and Chinese broadcasting sessions and soon, they will also be broadcasting about Science-related topics regularly on air! To further enhance the students’ ability in areas of Journalism and Broadcasting, several enrichment programmes like Audacity Audio Software Workshop and Advanced Broadcasting Curriculum have been put in place. Students from the CCA also have opportunities to transfer their learning by participating in competitions. This year, we participated in the National Radio Drama Script Competition and National Editorial Competition and received the Third Prize and Merit Awards for both Competitions.

HIHS Photography Club 2015 HIHS Photography Club is a club where keen students who share the love and passion for photography meet up weekly to learn and share with each other their photography skills. As a club, we go out for regular outdoor photography sessions such as trips to Clarke Quay and Labrador Park to sharpen our photography skills and build up our personal photography portfolio.

We are also a service club as we are often in the foreground capturing beautiful moments that take place during various school events such as our school’s annual National Day Fair as well as our uniquely celebrated Youth Day event. We also extend our photography services beyond the school. For example, our photographers were deployed during the 2nd Catholic Education Conference that took place in March where Catholic schools all over Singapore were in attendance. HIHS Photography Club has participated in several notable competitions this year such as the Yueh Hai Ching Temple Photo Contest organised by Ngee Ann Cultural Centre, The Straits Times – OBS A New Singapore Contest, WRS Wild Moments Photo Competition sponsored by Canon and Singapore Young Photographers’ Convention 2015 organised by Anglo-Chinese School (Independent). Members such as Emily Chua Wei Ting (3 Charity) and Ignatius Lim (1 Love) among many others have done us proud by winning in some of these national competitions.

Our group of students are the official event photographers for the 2nd Catholic Education Conference held on 16 March 2015.

Lastly, our photographs not only contribute to the aesthetics of our school, they also appear in public spaces such as in Orchard Tangs where our photographs have been displayed in a photograph exhibition commemorating Singapore’s 50th birthday in August 2015. 101

Weiqi Club The Weiqi club was formed in February 2015. It has 17 members from Sec 1 to Sec 3 who meet regularly every Thursday and train under a coach from the Singapore Weiqi Association. Weiqi is an intellectual and complex game which helps to develop systematic thinking and a good sense of judgment. 8 members participated in the 24th Qiuping Cup National Weiqi Tournament organised by the National Weiqi Association on 23 May 2015. They came in third place for both the junior and open category in the team division.

Modern Dance is a big family where students who have the passion to dance meet. Students are exposed to and given the opportunity to learn a range of dance genre such as Hip-hop, Street jazz and Contemporary dance. Dancers are nurtured into confident, creative and tireless individuals who are both team players and able performers. Every year, there are numerous opportunities for students to perform, such as the biennial Singapore Youth Festival (SYF), dance competitions and other school events. Badminton With a team consisting of 50 members (both from the lower and upper secondary levels), the HIHS Badminton team is never short of players, either for a friendly competition or a training session. Manned by overall teacher-in-charge, Mr Ong Wei Han and two other teachers, Ms Luo Cui Xin and Mdm Violet Ng, these youngsters receive professional coaching from Mr Aloysius Tan, who hones their skills and technicalities well enough that they can participate in this year’s Inter-school South Zone Badminton Competition where they learnt the values of resilience and perseverance. For now, these shuttlers will focus on building team spirit and camaraderie among themselves whilst aspiring to improve in future school competitions. They will definitely do all it takes to make their dreams come true.

It started in the year 2012 with 12 members, and has grown to the current strength of 43 members, led by 3 teachers-in-charge, namely Ms Koh Lay Kuang, Ms Amitra Ilangovan and Ms Tan Miow Qin. The members attend training regularly on Friday from 2.30 to 5.30 pm at Forte Bowl @ Kovan, coached by 2 instructors, namely Mr Tan Yu-Jin and Mr Steven Tan.

Floorball (GIRLS) In Floorball, we emphasise on the 4As – Academic, Attitude, Ability and Attendance and play with the 4Ps approach – Play Smart, Play Hard, Play Simple and Play. HI Student Leaders’ Investiture Speech

Amanda Chia is an alumnus of Holy Innocents’ High School. She was the national top secondary five GCE O-Level student of her 2011 cohort. She went on to study the Diploma in Nutrition, Health and Wellness course in Singapore Polytechnic where she graduated as a Toh Chin Chye Gold Medal winner. A very good morning to Mr Yap, our new Principal, teachers and student leaders of Holy Innocents’ High School. It is indeed my honour to be able to stand here and speak to you on this memorable occasion. Unlike every one of you seated here, I was never once a student leader in HIHS. On the contrary, I was the student that many teachers had headaches over, the student who was often called to sit outside the HOD room. Allow me to take you through my journey in HIHS, one that was filled with ups and downs but also one that was very unexpected. As I was crafting this speech, it really brought back memories, both the good and the not-so-good ones. In secondary one, I was often so loud and naughty in class that I was always asked to leave the class so that the class could study in peace. I mixed with the wrong crowd in school which led me down a dark and dangerous path. I failed my overall examinations in secondary one and was transferred from the Express stream to the Normal (Academic) stream. As nonchalant as I was, I didn’t know better and continued on the wayward path. My attendance in school was so bad that I was named the ‘ghost’ student; nobody knew when I would appear or disappear. I was known for being notorious and was always the troublemaker with poor results, with whom no good kids wanted to associate. I sought for love in wrong places, with the ‘cool kids’, hanging out at void decks, smoking and drinking alongside them just to fit in. I was in trouble with the law, always going in and out of the police station as if it was my second home. Until one day in secondary two, my group of friends and I were caught for rioting. We were arrested and had to stay in the police station to give an account of the incident. To cut a long story short, by God’s grace, I managed to close all cases pertaining to me with no criminal record. At the end of my secondary two education, I was supposed to retain because I failed almost every subject. I saw how the teachers in HIHS made special arrangements to meet up with my parents and tried very hard to push me to secondary three. Surprisingly, I did in fact manage to promote to secondary three. However, because I didn’t really attend classes in secondary one and two, I struggled to keep up with my peers. It was definitely hard to cram two years of foundation within eight to nine months, but I found the motivation within me to do it. I never want to disappoint my family and my teachers again, so while the rest of my friends were hanging out after school, playing or relaxing, I went home and studied. I made sure I got my fundamentals right, and thankfully, I managed to clinch bursaries in secondary three. I was dumbfounded but thankful nonetheless. I started putting in more effort in my studies, I made sure I understood everything the teacher taught and if I didn’t, I bugged them until I did. By the end of secondary four, I topped

the Normal (Academic) cohort in HIHS with 6 distinctions for GCE ‘N’ Levels. My parents and teachers were all so proud of me, and seeing them so happy made me want to do well for my ‘O’ levels as well! As many of you would have guessed, going from ‘N’ level to ‘O’ level was a huge jump! I struggled to stay awake in class and started questioning myself why I was working so hard. While my friends were all out playing, my mother asked me to take on sign language studies at night. I had to balance both my sign language studies and my national examinations preparation, and I told myself, if they didn’t give up on me, why should I give up on myself? So I worked even harder, completing Ten Years’ Series (TYS) after TYS, staying back in school to help the weaker ones – because when you help others, you help yourself along the way. At the end of the journey, I topped the entire Singapore’s Normal (Academic) batch and emerged one of the National Top Secondary 5 O-Level students in Singapore! My journey in HIHS was definitely a very memorable one and when the time came for me to move on, it came with tears and heartaches. As I stepped into my polytechnic life, I was given many opportunities to serve the community, such as helping the poorer and needy elderly to do basic health screenings. Many of my classmates found it a waste of time but I found it meaningful and enlightening. It was these CIPs that opened my eyes to the needs of Singaporeans; as successful as we might seem on the outside, on the inside, we do have people living in need. Through these CIPs, I also met people who are like-minded and who don’t have a platform to do more for the community. Thus, I started a sign language club in Singapore Polytechnic (SP), to help bridge the communication gap between the hearing and the deaf, to equip them with the right skills to be able to help the disabled in our society. Starting and managing a CCA club, on top of doing well in my studies and serving in church, was not an easy task, but I found that it’s only when you are at your stretched to your limit, that you can see God’s grace bursting through your life. I graduated top of my cohort in SP and won many awards. Today, my club is doing very well with more than a hundred active members who are helping the deaf society in one way or another. I was also accepted into NUS to pursue a degree in medicine. From a girl who was always rude and disrespectful towards her teachers to who I am today, I have many people to thank. Some are still here while others have gone on ahead of me. But I can tell you this; never will you find teachers who are as dedicated as those who are teaching in HIHS. Lastly, I would ask each and every one of you to find the reason within yourself to do well and when you feel like giving up, go back to that reason. Being chosen as a student leader is a privilege and not something to be taken for granted. All of you represent the school in one way or another, so be someone whom you yourself will look up to in the years to come. Personally, I never had the opportunity to wear the tie you all don with pride and was never given the chance to go through as much leadership training as you all. So definitely treasure the time and the opportunities you have now, because the things you learn now will teach you how to be an effective leader, one whom your future peers would love and respect. Thank you.


Kani and I By Chua Jacia, 2 Respect

In the eyes of all around her, Kani was an excellent dancer. She displayed fluid moves with such sleek and power, and whenever she executed them, it seemed effortless, beautifully effortless. She was the apple of the instructors’ eyes. Other than her amazing talent that outshone many other dancers, she was also naturally good-looking and kind-hearted. Needless to say, that resulted in the others being insanely jealous of her. I, on the other hand, was a humble wallflower. I was merely an average dancer who had to work hard to master all the moves. I did not join in the gossips of the other girls who abhorred Kani. I was, in fact, the complete opposite. I was her best friend. Despite me being such a typical Plain Jane with no exceptional charm, Kani somehow cherished me like no other. She relied on me like I was her best friend in the world, even though there were countless people lining up to be her best friend. She confided in me and trusted me with her deepest secrets. She also took the time to specially coach me in the moves that I was struggling with. She was my soulmate and I was hers. One day, after dance class, one of the girls who detested Kani passed around a note. “We are going to make sure that the blue-eyed girl will not have the slightest chance to take part in the dance festival. If you want to join us, meet at the Ladies at 5pm.” My jaw dropped almost to the ground as I stared at the message in absolute horror. It was completely mortifying to think of my best friend being hurt. However, a shameful thought suddenly entered my mind. I thought about how Kani was always favoured and how she was constantly doted by teachers rather than me. A flame began to ignite within me. I turned to look at her as she chatted with the dance instructor, her twinkling eyes forming crescent moons and her gleeful laughter ringing through the room. I crushed the paper in resentment and threw it into my bag. No way, I sinisterly thought, was I going to help her get out of this mess. The class finally ended and everyone scrambled around to pack up, the scheming girls patiently waiting for the instructor to leave. However, despite turning into the green-eyed monster, I did not partake of their shenanigans. A part of me wanted to leave and pretend that nothing was happening,

another part wanted to stay and watch the show. However, a larger part felt torn as I pondered over whether I should warn her. My stomach churned with fear. Should I heed my conscience and do the right thing? Or should I not? That was when a not-so-distant memory ran through my mind and I remembered how Kani had painstakingly prepared a birthday surprise for me, with months of effort. She had brought me into a treehouse where we celebrated my birthday. She even gave me the pair of sneakers that I had been wanting for years. No. I can’t let her down. I can’t let our friendship down. I kept telling myself that over and over again. Suddenly, a piercing scream echoed from the bathroom. My eyes widened in horror as my mind registered the truth. I dashed to the bathroom, running up the stairs two steps at a time. I could hardly breathe. My heart felt so guilty and heavy that I did not even care if I passed out. I saw eight girls ganging up on Kani. They tackled her to the floor and threw punches at her. One girl kicked her gut and she cried out in agony. I dove forward and shielded her from all the hits. With a booming voice, I declared, “I’ve already taken a picture of what you’ve done! If you don’t leave now, I’ll call the police!” Terrified, the girls realised what kind of mess they had dragged themselves into. As fast as lightning, they fled from the scene. I enveloped Kani in my arms as I sobbed uncontrollably. “I’m so sorry. I’m so sorry, Kani. I couldn’t stop it from happening. I-I could’ve kept you s-safe. I’ve let you down.” Kani winced in pain as she doubled over her stomach. Even so, her grin stretched from ear to ear as she chuckled faintly, “I forgive you.” Our friendship mended quickly, but I would always deeply regret this incident. I was absolutely foolish. How I wish I had a time machine.

I was the best or so I thought. I mean, after all, continuously topping the class year after year academically is not an easy feat, right? Complacency and arrogance came to me eventually, which was not a surprise really, seeing as how everyone around me showers me with envy and praises every time we get our results back. It was wrong of me to think like that, terribly wrong and finally after years of thinking I was superior to the others, I learnt my lesson the hard way. “Amanda and Lisa, come and see me outside the class for a while,” Ms Lee said. Lazily, I got up from my chair. Lisa stared at me and I stared right back at my best friend. She was always second, always behind me and naturally, I felt superior and looked down on her…secretly, of course.

definitely felt proud of her, but somewhere, a spark of anxiety and jealousy bothered me. I ignored it. “Amanda Tan!” I heard my name being called. That was it; it was time for me to shine. As I walked up to the stage, I took in a deep breath, ready for whatever that lay in front of me. However, contrary to what I expected of myself, my mind turned blank when I heard the topic and I immediately froze. My blood turned cold and I was just…dumbfounded, not a single word came to me. “Here is your question: All of the policies implemented by the Singapore government are beneficial to the citizens. Do you agree with this statement?” “I…I guess so…”

“I would like the two of you to take part in an oratorical competition. Basically, you just have to come up with a speech on the spot when the judges give you a topic and present your opinions to them regarding the issue given. Will you be alright with it?” “Of course!” I replied almost immediately, feeling not in the least worried. Lisa, on the other hand, stared at Ms Lee worriedly, and mumbled, “I…I am not sure, Ms Lee, but I will try my best…” “I will try to help you both to the best of my ability. I have some samples of topics and their model speeches. Would you like some of them?”

With that, I eventually did deliver a speech, a total catastrophe. As I walked back to my seat, fury rose up in me. I kept thinking to myself how ridiculous the topic was and blamed it solely on whoever came up with that topic. It definitely threw me off. As soon as I settled into my seat, Lisa whispered to me. “You know, if you had just read Ms Lee’s notes, you would have at least gained some pointers.” If possible, my rage literally broke the meter.

“Yes, please!” Lisa exclaimed, her face brightening up. “Come and look for me during recess, then.” With that, Ms Lee walked off. During the following two weeks, Lisa researched and read up on the samples and notes found online diligently. I, on the other hand, was the complete opposite. I never referred to the notes and samples Ms Lee provided and spent my time watching dramas and lazing around all day. The competition was never on my mind at all. I had complete faith in myself and believed in my ability. Well, too much I guess, because when the day of the competition came, I found myself regretting my actions, very severely. Lisa looked so nervous and kept flipping through the stack of papers she had in her hand, and kept reciting the points jotted down in the notes. Seated beside her, I was just scrolling through my newsfeed on Twitter, relaxed, not even in competition mode. The competition finally kicked off. Lisa’s turn came before mine, and when it was her turn, she actually delivered a wonderful speech of her own without faltering even once, earning a thunderous applause. As her friend, I

The competition finally ended and it was time for the results. Lisa sat on the end of her seat as anxiety crept over her like a slithering snake that was ready to strike her heart and cease her existence at any moment. My heart palpitated wildly, with indignation or anxiety, I had no idea. It felt like a blacksmith trouncing on metal waiting to make his sword. “And…the final winner of this competition is Lisa Lim!” When I heard that, I froze. I couldn’t even congratulate my best friend as she went up to collect the trophy with glory and pride. Realisation finally dawned on me and embarrassment slapped my cheeks. I realised how stupid it was of me to think that I was always a level above others. I was wrong, and I had finally learnt my lesson the hard way, for being overly complacent and arrogant. I should have at least put a little effort into the preparation of the competition, like Lisa, even a little. So, what if I was smart? Even a little bit of studying would have helped…


Describe someone who has helped you and explain how he has impacted your life. By Joshua Yew Yan Keat, 3 Humility Countless people have walked in and out of my life. People come and people go. Some make a meaningful impact, others do not. However, there was one person who certainly made a tremendous difference in me, someone who helped me when I was in the darkest depths of my rebellious adolescent years. He is none other than Mr Tan. Mr Tan is a senior teacher in my school. He is in his sixties and highly regarded among his colleagues. He has a completely bald head which is so shiny that by itself, it is an absolute perfect source of light, comparable to the sun, and, if I had my say, would have won the competition, hands down. Contrary to this condition, tiny tufts of white hair that still survive, nestle cosily against his elephant-like ears. White, like the first snowflakes in winter, they mark his passage through the years – long and highly eventful. His forehead has an innate number of wrinkles as numerous as the stars in the night sky. But, splashed across it is the object of much conjecture a malicious-looking scar. This hideous sight serves as a lifelong reminder to him never to walk down the dangerous path of crime. It represents the troubled days of his mischievous youth. For a man of his height, six foot two, he has surprisingly small eyes, so minute he perpetually looks as if he is fast asleep. Despite all these attributes, nothing can dim the bright smile he wears wherever he goes. He might be old but his teeth were still healthy and strong, though tainted with a tinge of yellow around the gums. His burly masculine body and wrinkled face cannot hide the kindness and sincerity that emit from his beautiful smile. He has a beard which is as long as the river Nile, stretching all the way to his massive chest. It gives him the appearance of a wise man, filled with knowledge and wisdom accumulated over the years, coagulating in that distracting bit of facial hair. To say that Mr Tan had a difficult childhood is to make an understatement. Raised by a single mother, he became a mischievous bundle of trouble. He eventually ‘blossomed’ into a notorious delinquent, much to her despair. Due to the lack of attention – his mother had to take on several jobs

to make ends meet – he found comfort in the arms of triad gangs. This eventually spurred him on to a life of crime where he obtained his lifelong scar during a scuffle with the law. Mr Tan was then sentenced to ten years in prison for theft, rioting and other whatnots. He was soon released on parole in recognition of his sterling behaviour. By the time he left, he was a changed man, dedicating his life to helping youths like himself give up the path he had taken so that they could forge a bright future. I must confess that I was in a similar situation when I chanced upon this man. Despite having a loving family to support me, I chose the road to ruin as this was not obvious to me at that time. It seemed so fascinating in my rebellious and monotonous moments. I was a sophomore in secondary school that year. And I was not the only one who adopted this lifestyle. All around me, my schoolmates and even classmates ‘enlisted’ in gangs in search of ‘brotherly love’. I, too, fell victim but, luckily, I met Mr Tan. It took him quite a while to convince me to come to my senses. At first, he was nothing but a nuisance, possibly, trying to annoy me. Then, I saw the sincere plea in his pea-sized eyes and his smile touched my heart. He made me realise where I was heading – a life of eternal ruin. If I did not heed his advice, my life would be changed and I would be labelled a criminal forever. During a conversation, he noticed how my eyes kept sliding to his scar. I mean, seriously, who could ignore something like that sitting on the forehead? And I have perfect eyesight. Without hesitation, he launched into the subject. It worked. But, it took all his patience and quite a bit of his time. Thanks to him, I realised my folly and gave up my ways. Ever since then, I have never looked back. As to how I met Mr Tan, he bumped into me while I was taking my lunch. It was sheer coincidence. Just out of the blue, this man asked if he could share my table in the crowded canteen. I took pity on his baldness and gestured towards an empty seat beside me. That started the first of many one-sided conversations. Come to think of it, perhaps, God took pity on me and sent me this old wise man or rather, wise old man. Don’t you think?

When I think of skies the sweetest baby blue and cottony clouds with patterns that please the eye, seas all emerald green and birds flying freely in the sky, the first thing that comes to my mind is Hawaii, absolutely the most perfect vacation destination in the world. That is, if you ask me. Hawaii is widely known for its breathtaking beaches. Almost each and every inch of soft, silky sand is clothed with tourists and locals, sun-kissed by the blazing sun. Armed with their huge, floppy hats, they would sprawl onto their handwoven straw mats and surrender themselves completely to the serious business of living life to the fullest. All around, the squeals of excited children fill the air, their boisterous laughter and noisy chattering adding to the wonderful cacophony of the Hawaiian beach. The waters are crystal clear, sparkling like a handful of diamonds carelessly tossed into the air. The waves roll boldly up the shore, playfully chasing each other as if playing an endless game of tag. The whole scene reminds me of a prized painting come to life. How I wish I could be there this very moment and savour the faintly salty, tangy taste of the Hawaiian air. Just staring at the sea, the people and the clear blue sky would calm my overheated nerves and ease my overtaxed mind. The magnificence of it all would enthral me forever.

This lovely island is cosy and comfortable, with tiny rural houses littered across its grassy slopes. Not a single skyscraper is in sight. Its people are gregarious and outgoing, welcoming strangers with a friendly smile and their unique brand of pineapple punch. No matter where you go, there is a distinct sense of neighbourliness extended to all who come to its pristine shores. The cuisine is a must-mention to do justice to this beautiful tropical island in the sun. The local food is delicious and mouth-watering. The sweet aroma of spices mixed with the freshest ingredients set my stomach growling like a starving tiger. Needless to say, the prices are far far cheaper than in Singapore. The wide variety of dishes amazes me. I wonder if any visitor has ever succeeded in sampling the entire range served. What a change it is from the monotonous routine of chicken rice from our school canteen. I could feast all day. Movies have filmed it, Actors and actresses have graced its shores. What more could a giddy teenager like me look for in a holiday destination? If I could, I would hop onto a plane and be there right away. Wouldn’t you, too?

What are the things that make you proud of being a student of your school? By Elaine Chua, 4 Respect I had once overheard a casual conversation of my friends which has remained etched in my mind ever since I heard it, like a dead knot. No matter how hard I tried to twist or tug or yank on that knot, it never seemed to go away. “This school is so small! I hate being in this school!” “Me too!” “Same thoughts here.” “Yeah! This place is like an atom! You can’t even see it with a microscope!” The instant I heard their conversation, I was hooked, like a fish when it is caught and I was absorbed in their conversation, sinking into a deep sea of thoughts. Why would they even think this way? I pondered as my friends chattered, forming a long chain of thoughts. Finally, a huge “No!” floated in my head. Disagreement consumed my mind. This school may not be very large, but it has a distinctive quality that makes it so special and unique. How could anyone hate this school just because of its size? I love my school, and I am certainly proud of it, knowing that I am a student of my school. Though my school may be small as they say, but it is the small space and community that create a pleasant and cosy place for everyone in the school. This small space fosters the kampong spirit which is rarely even seen these days anymore. Here, students from different classes and blocks come together to talk, chat, play and help one another no matter their race,

religion or ethnic group. The warmth that we can feel through the actions of students and teachers is palpable, like the sun soothing us with its gentle rays and warming our hearts and bodies with its brilliant light of compassion. In a special corner of my school, “The Space”, students interact and become friends with each other without having to know one another beforehand. There is no sense of wariness or dubiety here, only true friendship and love. Thus, it is this warm and heartfelt community in my school that makes me think, “I am so proud to be a student of my school!” Though my school comprises mostly Chinese students, there are still a minority of students from other races. Despite this fact, the non-Chinese students do not feel left out or not welcome here, they only feel integrated and unified as one with the Chinese students in the school. This is because everyone in the school is non-discriminating, non-judgmental and not prejudiced to people other than his or her race. Everyone is treated equally and justly here, so no one has to ever worry about being left out! During recess, as I watch the Indian and Chinese students play soccer together and the Malay and Chinese students eat breakfast together, I can feel an overwhelming burst of joy that is almost tangible. It is evident from these scenes that your race does not matter, as long as you are willing to open up, you are sure to find a friend here. Thus, this “Everyone is equal in our school” value makes me feel proud that I am a part of my school and gratified that I can find my niche in this small yet friendly place.

As you see that smile, tells a story. Maybe a random altruist would walk past her, perhaps offer a helping hand to alleviate her pain? Her heart starts to harden, when no one approaches. All she wants is just a little kindness, a little human touch to fill the emptiness.
