Welcome Dear PCDS Community: With much gratitude and appreciation, we thank you for your generosity throughout the 2019-2020 fiscal year. Despite the twists and turns of the strangest year either of us can recall, our parents, grandparents, alumni, faculty, staff, trustees, and friends of the School responded to the challenge with their usual resilience and intrepid spirit. Your support during the past fiscal year generated much needed resources through the Annual Fund, Individual Tax Credit, and Corporate Tax Credit—thank you. Throughout this annual report, you will see the names of those who went above and beyond to help continue our mission—to prepare promising students to become responsible leaders and lifelong learners through an education that emphasizes intellectual engagement, independence, collaboration, creativity, and integrity. Annual Fund The PCDS Annual Fund is the backbone of philanthropy at Phoenix Country Day School as it provides the resources our school needs to bridge the gap between tuition and the actual cost of a PCDS education. Each year, we ask our current parents, alumni, faculty, staff, and friends to support the Annual Fund with a tax-deductible gift that is meaningful to their family. Participation is most important—any gift makes an impact on student experiences right away. And, parent support is a key factor in national rankings as an indicator of health of a school and for prospective faculty, staff, and families gauging the climate of parent and school support.

Alumni Scholarship Fund The Alumni IMPACT initiative encourages all alumni to engage (by attending events and submitting Class Notes), connect (through our networking platform), and give back (by contributing to the Alumni Scholarship Fund). In 2019-2020, PCDS graduates contributed $141,725 to the Alumni Scholarship Fund and to its subsidiary—the PCDS Alumni COVID-19 Assistance Fund—to meet the immediate financial needs of PCDS students and their families with the onset of the COVID-19 pandemic. Together, Phoenix Country Day School alumni are making a powerful IMPACT.

HOW IT WORKS There are two Arizona Private School Tax Credit Programs that help fund PCDS financial scholarships. Individual Program: • Redirect a portion of personal Arizona tax liability to a Student Tuition Organization (AISSF) in support of the PCDS financial aid program. • Participants, in turn, receive a dollar-for-dollar tax credit against their Arizona income taxes. • There is a maximum amount for 2020: $2,365 (married filer) and $1,183 (single filer). Corporate Program: • Any Arizona C or S corporation, or LLC can redirect their corporate tax obligation to a private school of their choice (PCDS) to help fund need-based scholarships. • Corporations, in turn, receive a dollar-for-dollar tax credit against their AZ income taxes. • There is no maximum contribution amount—just a minimum of $5,000 per company.

Talley Society The Honorable Mae Sue Talley Society recognizes donors throughout School history whose cumulative giving to PCDS equals $25,000 and above, directed to any area of the School. Mae Sue Talley was the visionary leader who spearheaded the creation of PCDS as the Valley’s premiere independent school in 1961. A prominent Phoenix philanthropist and Arizona leader who passed away in 2017, Mrs. Talley, along with her husband Franz, served among the school’s original founders. The Talley Society was established in 2018 to recognize the School’s most supportive donors throughout our history.

ENDOWMENTS IN ACTION: Rex L. Allison Chair for Excellence in Teaching Rex Allison was among the group of pioneers that first conceived of the idea to form PCDS, and Mr. Allison served as Board President from 1964-1966. First awarded in 1988, the Rex L. Allison Chair for Excellence in Teaching is presented annually to recognize a faculty member who exemplifies the high standards of teaching that we’ve all come to expect and appreciate at Phoenix Country Day School. Offered annually, this gift covers the teacher’s salary and provides a $1,000 stipend to the teacher. The 2019-2020 recipient was Kavita Kukunoor, Middle School English Teacher who is in her sixth year at PCDS. Ms. Kukunoor states, “I am deeply honored and humbled to receive this award that recognizes the effort and commitment to my profession. Working at PCDS, in an atmosphere that is warm, supportive, and growth-oriented, has helped me positively evolve as a teacher, mentor, and colleague. PLANNED GIVING By making a planned gift, donors can leave a legacy, whether through a tax-advantaged life income gift or through a bequest.
IRA CHARITABLE ROLLOVER Individuals who are 70.5 and older are able to make a tax-free gift (up to $100,000) from their individual retirement account (IRA) directly to PCDS without subject to income taxes on the distribution. Many PCDS grandparents and former parents consider this option.
